I'm a baseball fan, period. I love my Dodgers. In the mid 70s, I knew a Security Guard and he let my daughter (around 8 yrs. old) and me in for free on the top deck above the home plate for every home game. It was in the days of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell, Ron Cey and Steve Yeager. Tommy Lasorda was the Manager. Manny Mota was a base coach. Most of the umpires from those days are no longer with us. My daughter had a red catchers mitt which my boyfriend had oiled and tied tightly around a baseball and you couldn't touch it for a week. So my daughter wore that mitt and always hoped to catch a ball that could never be hit as high at the top deck. Oh, she was so cute in her Dodger cap and jeans with T-shirt eating Dodger dogs and peanuts. She could scream loud enough to make fans of the opposing team turn around and throw popcorn at her and say shut up. We occasionally took my elderly mother (age 74 who knew the Dodgers from NY) who scarfed down Dodger dogs and ice cream. She said this is the best entertainment of all, better than a movie and it costs less.

I forgot to mention that years later, my daughter and I would be on the phone for an entire televised Dodger game and exchange comments. It was so fun.

Louise,

Thank you for sharing your memories.  We, too, have them from Yankee stadium with our boys as they grew in the 80s & 90s.

I was young when the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to CA.  Had many baseball cards of favorites from all teams, including Mantle, Mays & Maris, which I gave to my brother when I got married.  Years later, when my husband and sons got into collecting them, I wished I had kept them.

Thurman Munson was my husband's favorite Yankee.  Don Mattingly was the idol during my sons growing years.   The bond the boys had with their grandfather, dad, other family members & friends has stayed true, and their memories, I'm sure will be with them when they are our age.

I'm thinking a prayer, right now, that your daughter feels your love, the bond between you and the joy of that little red mitt.

During the A's heyday, when they won the World Series in '72, 73, '74 I was a teenager and I used to attend the games with my dad all the time.  We went to regular games, playoff games and of course the World Series.  We'd see Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie fingers.  It was great fun and very exciting for a kid.  I hope to bring my own kids to the playoffs this year, if I can get tix.  My 81 year old dad passed away suddenly last month, and it has added an extra dimension to the penant race this year.  He rooted for the A's til the end, and the kid and I cheered right along with him.  He'll be sorely missed through this and all the seasons!

I'm sorry for your loss, A's Fever.  My father-in-law passed away on the couch one hot July night in '87, watching the Yankees playing horrible game.  Our oldest, nearly 10 yrs old, had called him  around 10pm, asking what his Pop thought...he told him they were 'salamis'.   Our son was the last to speak to him.  He died in his sleep as he always had wished, and watching his beloved Yanks having a bad night.

We undertand.  It's a family thing.

He has been looking good, and today I hope he shines!

With our two big guns out Pedro and Orlando EL DUQUE Hernandez due to injury, everyone really needs to step up to the plate....(no pun intended)

I was disappointed the Yankee game was called last night, but they will play today at 1....

If we actually did have a subway series.....I dont think I could contain my excitement!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, that 4 hour wait must have made your boss's (sp?) night, I'm sure.   The game was already in delay when we left to vist Dad.  So, the boss stuck through like a true fan.

I agree, the Yankees are so deep it's too early to count them out.  Today's game (game 4) should be a good one; unfortunately daughter has a soccer game at that same time so I can't watch.  2NJ  - maybe it's A-Rod that should go, not Joe!

The Mets are a much better story. The Mets are today. They are today, and tonight's game against the Cardinals at Shea Stadium, and this weekend and next week and maybe the World Series after that. Yankee fans ought to know better than anybody. The team that matters the most is the one still playing.

Title: REST IN PEACE COREY
Post by: Jacqueline on October 11, 2006, 09:58:55 PM
Doug Lidle and his close friend Bobby Compton played a round of golf Wednesday morning near their southern California homes. Afterward, they went into the snack bar and watched as the television news broke in with an urgent flash: A small plane had crashed into a Manhattan skyscraper.

"We were watching it on TV," Compton told ESPN.com, "not even thinking it could be Cory, because Doug thought Cory had already left."

Lisa Lidle, Doug's wife, had just spoken to their son, Cory. "See you Saturday," he'd told her. Lidle's parents were sure he was on his way home. He'd planned to fly back to California later this week, making a few stops along the way.

Not worried, the men parted ways. Compton, who is also Doug Lidle's supervisor at Century 21 Colonial in Covina, Calif., went back to the office. Soon, the news began to spread through the building: Cory Lidle, who had been a customer of the real estate group as well as a friend, might have owned the plane that crashed.

Compton called his friend.

"Hey, Doug," he remembers asking. "Is it Cory's plane or not?"

"I don't know," Lidle told him. "I'm watching it."

Just then, a television report had confirmed the plane was registered to Cory Lidle, and that his passport had been found.

"Doug, call Cory," Compton said. "And call me back."

That's how Doug Lidle found out his son wasn't coming home.

A few minutes went by. Then a few minutes more. The truth began to set in around the office.

"He didn't call me back," Compton said. "I waited a little bit and he didn't call me back. I called and called; and then I said, 'Screw it.' I drove over to see him."

He found Lidle's parents struggling to accept the loss of their son, a young man who loved flying his new airplane and playing poker.

"Doug's holding on," Compton said Wednesday evening. "He's totally devastated. But that can be expected."

Compton said Lidle's wife, Melanie, and their 6-year-old son Christopher had left New York for Los Angeles before the accident, and likely had no way of learning of the news. According to Compton, a priest planned to meet the flight at Los Angeles International Airport and break the news to Melanie Lidle that her life is forever changed.

"She doesn't know," Compton said. "She's on a plane heading home. She has no clue."

You are right Jacq... the news hasn't been good on this one at all... they don't mention the instructor or his family... it's a shame...

the whole thing is just so sad... and I was disgusted yesterday afternoon to hear a talking head start discussing the lawsuit against the plane's manufacturer.... and how much the lawsuit would be worth..
DISGUSTING!

Investigators at Manhattan plane-crash site
Thursday, October 12, 2006

By NAHAL TOOSI
ASSOCIATED PRESS

AP
Firefighters are seen after Cory Lidle's plane crashed into a Manhattan high-rise.

NEW YORK - Investigators returned to a luxury Manhattan high-rise Thursday as they sought to answer questions about how a small airplane with New York Yankee Cory Lidle aboard slammed into the building, killing the pitcher and a flight instructor.

A partial sense of normalcy returned to the neighborhood as residents were allowed past checkpoints and into their scorched and battered building. The bodies had been removed, but pieces of fuselage, a plane door and crushed vehicles still littered the street in the frozen zone.

National Transportation Safety Board member Debbie Hersman said federal investigators arrived Wednesday evening and quickly found a crash scene with debris scattered everywhere. Aircraft parts and headsets were on the ground, and investigators discovered the pilot's log book in the wreckage. The propeller broke apart from the engine, which landed on the floor of an apartment. The bodies fell to the ground.

"We're continuing to review tapes," Hersman said Thursday. "We'll be looking to talk to other pilots who might have been in the vicinity. We have very exhaustive, comprehensive investigations. We're going to try to find anything we can to find out what happened."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly identified the instructor on Thursday as Tyler Stanger. No details about the instructor were given.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary restriction requiring all general aviation aircraft flying below 1,500 feet near the city to be authorized by air traffic control.

"The airways surrounding New York City and the metropolitan region are some of the most difficult to navigate in the nation," Gov. George Pataki said.

By Thursday, residents were back in the building, except for the 39th through 41st floors, where most of the apartments were gutted. The building's facade had a big, gaping hole where bricks and glass used to be. In another area, a six-story smoke-smudge marred the red brick.

About five cars, including a yellow cab, were crushed or seriously damaged. Uniformed officers and workers in hard-hats went about their business. A police mobile command center and a white truck marked "Crime Scene Unit" were parked in the frozen zone.

Jill Leiter, who lives across the street, said she tried to take pictures of the crash scene Thursday morning as she left her building, but was shooed away by police.

"It's very scary that you could be in your living room and something like this could happen," she said.

Lillian Snower Beacham, 52, said her 36th-floor apartment smelled of heavy smoke, and shattered glass and other debris covered her windowsills. Beacham saw the plane hit her building four floors above her, then watched pieces of the plane fall to the ground. Her first thoughts were of terrorism.

"That's why I took nothing and ran. That's exactly the first thought you have," said Beacham. "It's just surreal, absolutely surreal. The images of 9/11 come straight at you. You just run."

Families awaited official word about the identities of the victims, and teammates prepared to memorialize Lidle at Yankee Stadium.

Lidle, who was 34 and had a wife and 6-year-old boy, recently obtained his pilot's license and viewed flying as an escape from the stress of professional baseball and a way to see the world in a different light.

"No matter what's going on in your life, when you get up in that plane, everything's gone," Lidle told Comcast Sportsnet in April.

He told another reporter recently that his single-engine plane was extraordinarily safe, and was even equipped with a parachute in the case of an engine failure. The parachute apparently did not engage.

Lidle boarded the same plane Wednesday with the instructor for what was supposed to be a leisurely flight around New York City: They took off from a suburban New Jersey airport, circled the Statue of Liberty, flew past lower Manhattan and north above the East River. But something went wrong just moments after passing above the 59th Street Bridge.

The flight lasted about 20 minutes, with a 911 call about a fire coming in around 2:45 p.m.

It was not immediately clear who was at the controls. Lidle's passport was found on the street, according to a federal official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The four-seat, Cirrus SR20 was manufactured in 2002 and purchased earlier this year, Hersman said.

Hersman said that of September, there were 545 Cirrus SR20s registered the United States. Since 2001, the NTSB has investigated 18 accidents involving the plane; those crashes resulted in 14 deaths.

FAA records showed the plane was registered to Lidle, who had repeatedly assured reporters in recent weeks that flying was safe and that the Yankees - the same team traumatized in 1979 when catcher Thurman Munson was killed in the crash of a plane he was piloting - had no reason to worry.

His teammates were stunned.

Jason Giambi was among the first to express sadness and condolences.

"Right now, I am really in a state of shock," Giambi said in a statement. "I have known Cory and his wife Melanie for over 18 years and watched his son grow up. We played high school ball together and have remained close throughout our careers. We were excited to be reunited in New York this year and I am just devastated to hear this news."

Lidle pitched with the Phillies before coming to the Yankees. He began his career in 1997 with the Mets, and also pitched for Tampa Bay, Oakland, Toronto and Cincinnati.

Lidle's $6.3 million, two-year contract, signed with the Phillies in November 2004, contained a provision saying the team could get out of paying the remainder if he were injured or killed while flying a plane. Because the regular season is over, Lidle already had received the full amount.

Guess I should have said I agree about the media.   They ran the gamut with 9/11, misinformation about the type of aircraft, etc.  I missed a lot of it while visiting Dad in the nursing facility, and only found out when I called my sis while travelling home.  Carnut has posted some interesting info about the type of plane on the Lidle thread.  Perhaps the investigators will be able to determine how this all happened.

We're cool...guess Mets are on for today?

Yes, brilliant catch and then the throw to first for the DP - that's good stuff.  Then the Mets had a chance after with the bases loaded but couldn't execute.  I thought 2NY was rooting for the Mets after the Yankees lost.  Anyway, I was impressed by the Tigers and usually follow the AL anyway, so GO TIGERS!    But wait til next year - GO A's . . .

That was some catch he made and then to double up the other guy was even better.  I thought they were going to win after that but unfortunately they didn't.  They had a great year the Mets and gave NY a lot of excitement.

Hi Jacquie!

I actually stayed awake for the entire game 7. What a heartbreak -- but it was an exciting game (just the wrong ending).

That catch was awesome! Never saw anything like it before.

If the Mets had won -- I'm sure we would be seeing that catch re-played time and time and time again.

There's always next year.

So, in the interim -- GO BIRDS!!!!

(As a big basketball fan, Detroit is not my favorite team for anything  )

He pitched several scoreless innings after he washed his hand, so to me it is a non-issue.  He is just continuing his October dominance, as he demonstrated with my A's.

I can't really get into this series either.  Maybe we are brokenhearted. I'm still waiting for Tommy Lasorda to get me out of this tree so I can "live for this"!

Just was curious about KR....read and heard different takes on it, so I just threw it out there.  It's always something these days with computer enhancements, etc.

I'm sure Kenny is not the first to Doctor a ball...(Mike Scott just to name one from the Astro's did) and he did appear to pitch well after the pine tar (yeah I don't think it was dirt) was washed away.

Of course I have no proof, but his behavior (punching a photographer when he was with the Yankees) Jumping on the dug out during the celebration of the Divivision Victory, and his overall rebirth as a pitcher leads me to believe he may be juicing.

Did KR do those things?  I remember something about the photographer incident, did he get suspended for that?  You may be right . . .

He may have gotten suspended...

Now I'm all for celebrating after a victory but he jumped up on the dugout and was just going wild.....I don't know, it just appeared over the top to me, not to mention when he jumped off of it, he could have injured himself.

He poured champagne over a Police Officer's head also during the celebration and of course the fans went wild....

i don't know....

Just a gut feeling....
