At Cheaper Than Dirt alone, more than $100,000 in guns and ammunition have been sold every day since Election Day. Buyers are stocking up before President-elect Barack Obama takes office

Sales are brisk across the West. Background checks for new gun owners jumped 15 percent last month, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation data.

Colorado just set a record for the highest number of background checks for new gun owners, nearly 1,500 in a single day, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

"One of the strangest things I've had happen in the past few weeks was that I've had people coming in here wearing Obama buttons and Obama T-shirts," Glen Parshall, owner of a local Fort Worth gun shop. "[They] tell me they're in here to buy them before he bans them."

Gun shop owners and buyers said the urgency to buy a weapon was fueled by Obama's presidential win and Democrats increasing their majority in Congress. Gun owners fear they will institute tough new gun laws.

"I think it's every American's right to have a gun," said Oscar Ramos from East El Paso.

Some El Pasoans believe people should carry a handgun but not assault weapons.

"Who needs an AK-47 who lives in El Paso? You don't need that. You need a handgun to defend your family, if anything," said Glen Vera from the Lower Valley.

Hubert said there's no telling what kind or how strict new gun laws will be.

"You're dealing with a completely unknown element out there in Washington," said Hubert.

In fact, Porter, an Essex gun dealer, says his sales have increased by 300 percent since the height of the campaign season, and they shot up even more after Election Day.

For gun enthusiasts, the biggest fears are an increase in excise taxes up to 500 percent and more regulation.

A frequent blogger for the National Rifle Association warns the website.

"Those two measures wouldn't just decimate the firearms industry, they would kill it."

"People are spending money they don't have to buy firearms. They're scared. They're scared because of the economic downturn the have nots may come after the haves. They want to defend themselves," said Frank Krasner, Silverado Gun Show organizer.

Matt Fenton, the founder of Ceasefire Maryland, says it's the gun industry, not politicians that creates panic during an election year.

The reason? People are afraid a BHO regime will somehow legislate against gun ownership. And how did people get that idea? From the mainstream media? Not on your life. They are turning to the Internet and sites that are not afraid to tell the truth.

The NYT report also announces that battles over guns “raged fiercely” throughout the presidential election campaign. Really? How come the MSM didn’t bother to tell us that during the election? No, they had to wait for three days after.

But do not be misled. The NYT story quotes a gun store owner in Montana as saying his customers are awake, and aware and see a dangerous trend. And where are they getting their information on which to base their conclusions, “They are educating themselves on the Internet.”

If the mainstream media had done its job, people might not need the Internet. They might not even feel the need to buy more guns and ammunition.
