Post by: klaasend on December 26, 2008, 11:01:08 PM
We have several very talented members at Scared Monkeys that have voiced a desire to discuss fashion.  I have created this forum for that purpose.

Feel free to start threads on any fashion topic you desire.   ::MonkeyCool::

Can I still wear a pair of dress heather grey gauchos, with my tall black boots?  I haven't worn them in a while but thought I might tonight to go out with my husband for sushi.  Are they totally out?  I LOVE fashion but am SICK of my same old stuff.  Just thought I'd mix it up a bit...  Thoughts?

Sounds elegant to me.  As long as it doesn't involve Ugg boots, leggings or your drawers hanging out of it, I'm down with it!

Gaucho's are not completely out...depending on where you are.  I would not try to wear them in the freezing tundra right now..LOL
Are the boots cute? (Sorry I love boots!)
What type of top are you planning to wear with this?  I think if you added a jewel toned top to this outfit it would look hot for sure...then maybe a nice silk scarf around the waste or losely around the neck..keeping it casual chic.
Honestly, if you love it and feel sexy in the outfit, wear it!

I love my Uggs!  LOL
My fav comfy outfit consists of my Diesel Jeans, Jesse and the Rippers t-shirt, and my Uggs.  Lately I have had to throw on my long sweater jacket as the temps are low, but still..love my uggs.  LOL

Thanks everybody!

I am actually going with a new black top with some super funky jewelry.  I am wearing a tall black boot with a tall heel.  Not a spike heel, more of a squarish one but tall and thin.

It should go really well.  The jewels will dress it up and make it funky.

Oh, and I just got a pair of brown sweater Uggs....  LOVE THEM!!!  Seriously.  I need to get a skinny jean to tuck them into but until then, I am still wearing them and feeling comfy all day.   ::MonkeyWink::

Love the new forum!  My daughter is named Madison, but she couldn't say it when she was little.  She called herself Fashion!  I am in fashion design, manufacturing etc. so I loved it and the name stuck.  People do look at me funny in public when I say "Fashion, come here!"  She's 4 now and quite the little diva.  She loves to dress up, goes nowhere without her jewelry, and changes "wardrobe" several times a day, so the name suits her!

I must say, I am so excited about this new forum.

OH!  Anybody found a new fragrance they like?  I hate floral and fruity.  Something a little sexy...  I don't know.  In the past I wore Abercrombe for women but I am now 31 and think it is a bit young.  I want something that makes me feel like a woman.  ???

Sounds fierce! I am sure your hubs will love it no matter what you wear!  Funky jewelry is very hot right now..specially the chunky kind!  :)

Bold colored skinny jeans are very in right now...we are traveling back through 1980's right now in fashion, but with a bit of a twist... :)

Have fun tonight!!  I am so jealous of your sushi!!  (I miss it!!!!!)

My friend just found out she was prego and I sent her a card with a picture of sushi that states-

"Congratulations on your Pregnancy!  I'll be thinking of you while I'm drinking my morning cup of coffee, or when I go out for delicious sushi, or enjoy a glass of wine after a long, hard day..."

She didn't think it was as funny as I did!  I already have 2 kiddos so I am out of the game.  They are 6 and 3.  Tonight the munchkins are staying with my sister and we are having date night.  Sushi is our absolute fav!  All our friends make fun because that is where we go when we have a chance to get out.  But hey, it is like entertainment and dinner all in one!  I can't wait!

What's "in" as far as hosiery?  I'm a bit confused since I see a lot of bare legs in ads and catalogues.  I have really fair skin, live in Ohio, and work in a professional office.
Bare...not so good on me.  Can anyone help?  ::MonkeyTongue::

Bold pattern "tights" are very much in right now.  I wear black patterned tights with my mini's a lot.  Always 1 is known for wearing them as well, not sure what sorts of patterns she wears with them though.
For a professional office I would not suggest wearing the mini's, but possibly some knee highs with pants.  One can never go wrong with "nude" spanx when in a professional setting and does not wish to be bare legged...mix it up a bit though to match your outfits for sure!  Black nylon spanx are fierce when worn with the right attire.

Wow! Great thread!

I'm pretty picky about fragrances, and different ones smell differently depending on how it interacts with your own skin, but I wore Issey Miyake's l'eau d'issey exclusively for years. If you aren't familiar with it, it sounds fancy, but you can buy it at Sophora. The lotion is a nice clean smell.

About a year ago, I started wearing a cream that I love and can buy locally. The CREAM in the Lancome Tresor line is wonderful! I don't care for the lotion, cologne, or perfume, but the cream in the jar is heavenly and lasts, subtley, all day. I just rub a small finger dab on my wrists and neckline, and it's great. With it, I don't use cologne, etc.

Next time you're at the cosmetic counter, ask for a tester.   ::MonkeyWink::

That's a great tip CBB...I had forgotten that my Mom used to do that.  She wore Royal Secret and it lasted all day, but in a more subtle way.  I will try your suggestions.

Dolce, I hope I am doing this right.

My mom is turning 60 and we (my sister and my step dad) are having a lunch party for her at the Zodiac room at Neiman Marcus. I am not a posh person, so I don't know what to wear. I don't have a lot of money like my sister so I really think I would feel uncomfortable going to this party. I know my mom wouldn't care what I wore, but I can't afford to go to Nordstroms and buy a new outfit. The only time I get new clothes is at Christmas or my birthday. I don't shop for myself because I don't have the extra money to spend. Any help you can give me I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much, JSM. P.S. I am a jean/sweat shirt type of person so thats all I have in the closet that will fit my big butt!  ::MonkeyHaHa:: ::MonkeyWaa:: TIA JSM

Quite honestly you are going to be with people that you love and people that know you and your situation.  While the Zodiac is very chic, I have seen people in it who are not.
Are you wanting to purchase a new outfit since all you have are jeans and sweatshirts, or are you looking to spend some dollars, like say $20-$30 for a new shirt to go with those jeans, and maybe a nice accessory?
Without knowing what is exactly in your clothset I can not help you pick out an outfit, but I have made mention to others that I can pick out a great outfit as Walmart just as I could at Saks.
You can email me at any time.  My email is dolce_chic@ymail.com.  I can give you some more customized ideas.
All in all though, it is for your mother and I am certain that your presence is going to surpass your outfit.  :)

Thank you so much for listening to my pity party. I have gained about 40 pounds so I am about a size 12 right now. I have two pair of jeans that fit. I hate to shop for clothes I always have. My sister is bigger than me, but can look like a queen in anything she wears. She also can buy anything anywhere as she is a shopping freak. My new clothes always come from her closet. I will email you tomorrow. Thanks for your help. You are a dear. Joesamas.

Joes there is also no shame in asking your sister to help you pick out an outfit from her clothset for you.  Many people are known for keeping clothes that are smaller sizes than their current, I am sure she has something that could fit you and that could look very nice.
Keep it simple is the key here.  Accessories can be added if need be.
Just remember the important key here is your mothers happiness.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I am not familiar with skating type dresses, I do all sizes though, trust me I have seen some large people fit into some not so large strapless bridesmaids gowns.  I make clothing for my BFF who is a size 24.

Thanks Dolce. I emailed you more info. You are such a great person. Also one more question, do you design and sew clothes no matter what size. Just asking because I need a person to design a skating dress for a LARGE sized woman. TIA and thanks for all your help!
You are sweet!
I am not familiar with skating type dresses, I do all sizes though, trust me I have seen some large people fit into some not so large strapless bridesmaids gowns.  I make clothing for my BFF who is a size 24.
Strapless no, I wear a bra always.  ::cartwheel:: but I can email you a pattern of what I want. The thing around here is, most designers for skating dresses want to make you wear the "latest thing" not something that is flattering!

The dress is hot, but not on her.  I think that the colors really wash her out.  This would look fab on someone with a slightly darker complection such as Jessica Alba.

As long as it doesn't involve Ugg boots, leggings or your drawers hanging out of it, I'm down with it!

haha I have on uggs right now....I own 5 pairs.  ::MonkeyTongue::

Wear them all year round.  ::MonkeyHaHa::

As a matter of fact after work I'm going to buy a brown pair that I saw when I went out for lunch.  ::MonkeyHaHa::

pb

::MonkeyTongue:: ::MonkeyTongue:: I love my Uggs too, I don't care whether or not they are stylish, they are just so damn comfy. My daughter stole my last pair, as she does all my clothes, but on the upside I get to wear all her jeans that her daddy buys (7's True religion, Diesel, J brand, 7 for all mankind). I'm too cheap to buy those for a teen, but I'll sure as heck wear them if someone else is willing to contribute to her jean collection (around 25 pair now) ::MonkeyConfused::

Me Too!   Lancome Tresor........... have worn it for years, my all time favorite.

Hi Guys, been wanted to post this for awhile but never had time. In case noone knows Victoria's Secret has a fantastic website! I get all of my basics there; tops, tees, tanks. They are not just an undies site. I pretty much get everything here including my Uggs!  They have great prices & are always on top of the latest trends. I'm not real crazy about Spring's dusty pastels; I love bright colors, but summer always brings beautiful brights! Their Pink collection is adorable, too! I got my daughter & my niece the University of AL hoodies for Christmas. I have tons of the tshirts & sweats. I have to be careful as it's so easy to put stuff on my Vic. Sec. card  ::MonkeyEek:: The sailor pants, I love and I got last season. They're still on for this year too. I'll post the ones I have. Hope this helps someone with fashion woes!  ::MonkeyTongue::

They are perfectly sized, they do not run small at all! There is a size chart on each page just in case you need it. The quality is great! I wear some of the basics like tees & tanks over & over again & they never shrink or fade! I just love their stuff! I just got a pair of skinny jeans from there & I absolutely Love them, the fit is perfect, & you can wear them with boots, flats or heels, just whatever. I really got into the sailor pants last season, thank goodness they're still in style. The blue & white striped ones in the pic I took to the beach last summer. They are a gauzy type fabric & look so cute with a tank. If you do get wide leg pants make sure to wear a top that's a closer fit & not blousy. The khaki sailor pants in the pic are really low cut so I have to be careful to wear a longer top  ::MonkeyTongue:: I got a catalog yesterday & I already have some pages marked. I'm gonna sneak on the website after my hubby goes to work! j/k, he doesn't care!  ::MonkeyRoll:: My granddaughter wants a pair of the colored Uggs; I'm gonna have to save up for those  ::MonkeyEek::  Here's the website www.victoriassecret.com If you haven't checked out the Pink collection, i think you would love that too! Two other sites I love are www.forever21.com & delias.com. I got a beautiful maxi dress from Delias last summer & I got a million compliments on it! My daughter borrowed it several times, too. I'm so glad you posted here cause it looks like this thread doesn't get much traffic. Let me know if you find something! Love Ya, Monken  ::MonkeyRoll::

Hi Monkey and Lovin....I'm going to check this out too.  I'm thinking about trying the sailor pants and some tanks for summer.  My "work look" is really tailored, but I think it's time to break out of that look and have some fun with fashion for spring and summer (especially after this long winter   ::MonkeyWaa:: ).

I find a lot of clothes at Talbots.com too.  It's a good mix of professional and casual styles...but pretty conservative.  I really like their dresses and basics like sweaters and skirts.  The quality is good and their sales are great!  If you open a charge you get points which translates into gift certificates several times a year.   ::MonkeyTongue::  Their sizing is really reliable too.

Hello fashionista monkeys!  Tamikosmom recommended this thread to me, I'm hoping you might be able to help me out.

I was trying to educate myself about the effects of saltwater on denim.  This relates back to the Natalee Holloway thread and the discussions about the evidence recovery from the crab trap.  My thoughts were along the line of attempting to rule in or out the possibility that denim would still be that unfaded and pliable after that long (2.5 yrs. approx.) in the ocean.

I found that spandex contains PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) which is resistant to saltwater.  I've also found that most stretch denim mini-skirts contain from 1% to 3% spandex, while swimsuits are typically around 47%-50% spandex.

What I don't know is the % content of PBT in spandex, and what % of spandex in such a fabric (cotten/denim) would be enough to protect it from the effects of saltwater.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

After 2.5 years in salt water I would imagine that it would be a bit faded and worn given current running over it and what not.  The material itself may be a bit deteriorated though, and surely would not resemble that of a skirt, possibly a quite torn skirt or strips that would remain after other parts had been carried away with the tide.  It really depends too on what brand skirt it was to see just how much spandex was involved...you have to remember that a heavily worn bathing suit does being to tear and deteriorate itself. (Living in FL all my life and swimming about 90% of the year, I rotate between 9 bathing suits for this reason.  After chlorine and salt water good to pre-soak in a vinigar solution)

I am not too familiar with the Victoria Secret clothing line, although some of their intimates are rather nice.  I will have to shoot over and take a look at what they offer.
I am extremely picky about fabrics though, so can you tell me if you have ever had an issue with any of their clothing making you itch or it being too scratchy?  Some fabric mixtures just do not mesh well, yet the mass marketers continue to produce it!
Ok, interested to know...please advise!

No, no, no, if the fabric was scratchy I wouldn't wear it. Victorias Secret also carries other designers now, including some Juicy Couture(which is my favorite!) Thank you for the info Monken.  I will have to venture over and look at VS's website.  I do like Juicy to work out in and wear to Yoga.  They are comfy for loungin around the house in too.  I have seen some of their styles from their other line as well, the more dressed up line that is, and its not too bad.

I will head over to VS later today and take a gander.

Angel by Thierry Mugler is what I wear mostly along with Chanel No. 5 and Chanel Coco.

Hey! Angel by Thierry Mugler is mine too!! I just melt when I spray or dab! I love Chanel No. 5 too, but have never tried Chanel Coco. Angel will always be my favorite!

I like the Chanel Chance....it is a newer fragrance....very nice!

I need some help and I just know that some smart monkey can help me out.

I need some help with dressing up my regular wardrobe.  I am a jeans and t-shirt kind of monkey...I work in a job where it is not pratical to dress up.

I am able to wear jeans/shorts at work, I need comfy shoes - as I do have to walk and sometimes lift.  I am in my early 40's - so nothing too trendy.

I am at a loss as to how to "dress up" a simple jeans/shorts & shirt outfit.  I am NO good at knowing what type of jewelry to wear, and whether I should "match" colors or wear complimenting colors of jewelry.  (I'm not a flashy type of person)

I am also at a loss when it comes to tops....seems to me some of the tops that are fashionable now are targeted at 20 year old - size 2's.  In other words, I don't want to look like I am trying to re-live 20 years ago, but I also don't want to look like I am a year or 2 away from granny clothes and polyester!

Can anyone help a confused  ::MonkeyConfused:: Monkey in a rut???????

PLEASE??????????????????????????

Something I have always told any of my clients who are looking for help is this, "Keep it simple".  Its so very true, the more you add or clutter on, or try to mix, it just gets messy!
For you, saying you are not a flashy person, or do not care to be in with the 20ish trends, that is completely understandable.  I have a few ideas for you though, so here ya go!

Add some capri's to your wardrobe to break up the jeans/shorts routine.  Solid color, striped, and even floral printed capri's are very trendy right now within your age group.
Think outside of the box in terms of color.  For your shirts try some jewel toned solid colors and/or prints.  Mix that up with a nice pair of capris or khakis.  A solid colored top with a stiped pair of capris, add a color matching floral scarf as a belt, and you have a divine outfit right there.
The mix and match of patterns and prints is hot right now, no matter your age.  Keep the color scheme the same and you should be good to go.
I do not touch on shoes, they are unique to the individual, so I say whatever looks good and is comfortable to you, wear em!

Dolce - Thanks for the tips....I do like the jewel tones, and also bright colors.

What is the best length for capris....where on my leg should they hit? (slimming place would help!)

And, also, about jewelry - I agree with the too cluttered look, but also if I wear a solid top, it seems to look somewhat unfinished.

Also, what about pearls?  Are they in?  I love the feminine look of pearls with say baby blue or pink, but what about with darker colors?

Thank you so much for answering my questions.  I am getting excited, thinking about what direction to go in - now if I can just get some $$ together....I'll go shopping!!!

With Capri's you can not really go wrong on length as long as you stay a good 4 inches above your ankle and atleast 2 inches below the bottom part of your knee.  I have found that the capri's that are form fitting and flair out at the base, almost as if "boot cut", flatter and add curvature to the body.
Do not go with anything too clingy as it may cause unwanted things to pop.  A straight legged capri is very nice too.  If you are of a heavy stature (not saying you are or downing anyone who is) avoid the cargo types that have the elastic band or tie at the bottom as it causes a poof that is very ugh!

For jewelry at the top any one chunky necklace would be delicious, a strand of pearls is always in style, and even a single gold necklace can look chic.  If you are going to accessorize then you are going to want to think in terms of what is "trendy" and play with it.  Right now the "bib" necklaces are very in, and can add a nice touch of color to a solid top, and chunky is still very very hot!  Wooden bangals and cuffs are nice and "earthy", as well as any other type of bangal and/or cuff bracelet.  Just remember to not over do it to the point you look "top heavy".
The chunky look is especially "pop" with darker earthy type tones, but white pearls are not bad with black or navy blue.

I went and looked at Nordstrom for some vissuals for you.  While there I was also reminded of the oh so fab Bermuda Short (something to consider since you are able to wear shorts to work).  Below are some ideas!!  (They can be found at Nordstrom.com but you can look for the same sort of styles at other places too I am sure!)

Cropped Pants (Capri's)

Here are some tops, that are of course age apropriate for you, just to give you an idea.  Again these can be found at Nordstrom.com, but I am sure you can find items like it virtually anywhere.  May I also add, you mentioned "slimming" in your last post.  For tops I have found that "draped" type tops and "v-neck" cuts flatter any figure.

very cute stuff dolce and just what I would have recommended as well..! can't go wrong with capris and those loose fitting tops flatter most any body type I think and are so comfy too!
then add a cute cardigan sweater to the mix for cool days/nights....they are very popular now as well...I never leave home with out one or a wrap of some sort...restaurants and malls can be cool in my opinion....

Oooo those are some cute capris!  I like the tops as well. They're dressy, but not toooo dressy.

I also like those sandals the girls are wearing.  I do wear bermudas - gosh a few seasons ago I was mortified when about all I could find were short shorts.

I also purchased a sewing machine a while ago, and although I have only ventured sewing pillows and a few alterations, I am thinking about turning some capris into bermudas, or pants into capris.  That would give me alot more options.  I have a hard time finding bottoms that fit.  I have larger hips/thighs and small waist.  (I hate the gaps when I find pants to fit, but they never fit the waist!)

Thanks Dolce & Cookie for you input.  Sometimes I feel lost when shopping for clothes, and opt for the "safe" outfits - You guys have given me some good ideas!

Now to go shopping!   ::MonkeyDance::

Anyone have a suggestion on an Easter Outfit for Sunday church and festivities?  It's going to be cold and probably rain/snow here.  High in the mid 40's.  I always have such a difficult finding something that is springy but I don't freeze to death in.  I wear a size 12 and I'm 5'8".  Suggestions appreciated.  Lovinlife

PS. I'm conservative, so nothing too over-the-top if ya know what I mean, no fancy Easter bonnets for me!

I went onto a website called NewPort-News.com  and their dresses are pretty conservative, and with a nice trench style coat could be fab for Easter in the cooler weather!

This outfit I thought would be fab for your size, conservative style, and the cooler temps.

Hey, lovin, last year i wore a skirt & top with a light weight cardigan. You don't always have to wear a dress, remember! Any solid color skirt would look great with a bright or print top. Yellow is really hot for spring this year, i don't know how you feel about that color, and green is my favorite! Esp. lime green & it looks so springy & great with all spring colors! Happy Easter!!  ::MonkeyRoll::

Yes jumpsuits were big in the fall and making an appearance in the spring, quite possibly the summer as well.  (They are not for everyone though...)

Dolce, you know I go to Pilates and Yoga.  Well, most of the girls just wear baggy t shirts and comfy pants, but there is this one girl who is there before me, she wears the most beautiful tunic tops and leggings to class.  Tonite she was wearing a pink and green paisley tunic and matching green leggings - adorable.  I WANT SOME  - but I have looked everywhere - any ideas.  (I hope I put this in the right forum)

I know that designers such as Tory Burch and Antik Batik have some beautifully colorful tunics within their lines, but not sure about the matching pants.
Did you ask the pretty lady where she purchased her divine outfit?  I will search and see what I can find.

Designer Alexander McQueen found dead at 40, helped inspire renaissance in British fashion
(http://www.newser.com/getimage.aspx?docid=036415c5-2350-48d0-9b7b-4ea5a80b3af1&source=a&height=250&width=300)
British fashion designer McQueen found dead at 40
His runway shows were often like performance pieces: One featured models with headwear made of trash. Another showed off 10-inch heels shaped like lobster claws.

At the pinnacle of his success, British fashion designer Alexander McQueen was found dead in his home Thursday, days after posting anguished online remarks about the death of his mother. He was 40.

The circumstances pointed to a possible suicide, but there was no confirmation from police or McQueen's publicists. Authorities said the death was not suspicious, apparently ruling out foul play. They did not indicate how McQueen was discovered.

The Sun tabloid cited an anonymous source on its Web site who said workers found McQueen hanging in his apartment. The newspaper gave no further details. His family issued a statement asking for privacy.

McQueen is credited with helping revive the once-moribund British fashion industry. His edgy pieces were coveted and treasured by stylish women across the globe and seen on numerous red carpets.

Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour called McQueen "one of the greatest talents of his generation."

"He brought a uniquely British sense of daring and aesthetic fearlessness to the global stage of fashion. In such a short career, Alexander McQueen's influence was astonishing _ from street style, to music culture and the world's museums," she said in a statement. "His passing marks an insurmountable loss."

McQueen did not design for the celebrities, but they flocked to him for the sheer audacity of his creations, which were instantly recognizable for being dramatic, exquisitely tailored and oh-so sexy.

A stunning dress for Sandra Bullock? A special order for Madonna? Something special for Kate Moss or Naomi Campbell? All these feats seemed easy for the quiet, slim, bearded Englishman who shunned publicity and laughed off the limelight.

Lady Gaga recently made waves when she wore McQueen's spring 2010 lobster-claw shoes in her "Bad Romance" music video.

McQueen's mother died Feb. 2. Some fashion experts speculated that his mood may have also been clouded by pressure to top himself again next month at his catwalk show in Paris.

News of his death broke at the start of New York Fashion Week and sent shock waves through the Bryant Park tents. A presentation of McQueen's secondary label, McQ, had been scheduled for later Thursday, but it was quickly canceled.

After word of his death spread, one mourner left pink flowers at the doors of the designer's London headquarters. Mourners also gathered outside his New York store.

"He was a great, great talent who had lost someone important in his life," said Xavier Keane, who placed the flowers. "I know how he feels because I lost my mother last year."

McQueen sounded anguished and frustrated in recent postings on his Twitter page. The remarks also sounded slightly confused.

"i'm letting my followers know the my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not me nor would you RIP mumx," he wrote.

Shortly afterward, he added: "But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

On Sunday, he used an obscenity to describe his "awful week" and said he had to "some how pull myself together and finish."

Four days later, he was dead.

"If you are a genius, the pressure to be a genius is always immense," said Imogen Edwards-Jones, author of the "Fashion Babylon," a novel on the untidy underside of the industry.

McQueen helped spark a renaissance in London fashion, helping to revive it after the long-dormant period that followed the punk explosion in the 1970s.

He was also responsible for one of history's most famous "wardrobe malfunctions." He designed Janet Jackson's Super Bowl outfit, which fell open while she was singing, revealing one of her breasts.

In the usually glad-handing fashion world, McQueen was known as a private man who shunned the limelight. He turned down most interview requests and did not cultivate a cult of personality or try do develop an air of mystery about his work.

McQueen, a trim, handsome man with startling gray-blue eyes, had an easy smile, but did not linger in the camera's glare.

"In a world where every man and his dog is a designer, Alexander McQueen was the real deal," said celebrated hat maker Philip Treacy. "His talent was supersonic."

McQueen made his name first in London, then wooed audiences in Paris, New York and Milan to take his place in the upper echelons of the designing world. He was named British Fashion Designer of the Year four times, and was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, when she made him a Commander of the British Empire for his fashion leadership.

"McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs," said Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue.

Hal Rubenstein, a fashion director for InStyle magazine said McQueen started out tough and angry _ in his work and attitude _ but softened over time as he felt more appreciated by the industry.

McQueen, he said, was a master of integration of technology into fashion.

"He changed the way so many of us see shows."

McQueen was known for pushing the envelope. At his spring-summer 2010 collection, he featured sculptural cocktail dresses in psychedelic snakeskin prints, with the hoof-like platform booties that were worn by Lady Gaga. The show opened with huge screens projecting close-up images of a woman writhing among a den of snakes.

The death left the future of the McQueen label in doubt.

After a founder's death, other major labels have turned to lesser-known in-house talent, as happened with Valentino; or brought in outside designers, as happened at Emanuel Ungaro; or even recruited family, as with Versace.

McQueen was the youngest of six children born to a taxi driver and a teacher. He received his early fashion training at the Central St. Martin's College of Art and Design, long recognized for its fashion-forward approach and encouragement of Britain's talented young designers.

He learned the finer points of traditional men's tailoring at two famous, conservative Savile Row houses: Anderson and Sheppard, and Gieves and Hawkes.

After his Savile Row stint, McQueen started to develop his trademark, more theatrical designs, working with several other brands before first starting his own label in 1992.

He quickly earned a reputation for innovation. The company he founded was purchased by the Gucci Group, and he retained creative control of his own brand. There were plans for stores in Paris, Milan and London, as well as Manhattan and San Francisco.

His runway shows were always a highlight during the Paris ready-to-wear fashion week.

One of his previous collections included a show built around the concept of recycling, with models donning extravagant headwear made out of trash. His last collection, shown in October in Paris, featured elaborate and highly structured cocktail dresses. Critics raved.
