KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police and family members are searching for a Kansas City woman who hasn't been seen or heard from in days.

Renee Pernice disappeared late last week.

The 35-year-old's friends and family members have been posting fliers in her Northland neighborhood on Northwest 66th Terrace near 169 Highway.

The wife and mother of three was a nurse at St. Luke's hospital and teaches nursing students.

Renee's father, Rick Pretz, said he is growing increasingly concerned as each hour passes. He said it's not like Pernice to just take off. He last spoke with Pernice on New Year's Day.

Police said Pernice's husband last saw her on Friday morning.

Family members describe Pernice as a slender woman who is about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with blue eyes and shoulder-length brunette hair.

Police suspect foul play in Northland woman's disappearance
By GLENN E. RICE
The Kansas City Star

Police, friends and family members continued their search today for a 35-year-old Northland woman who has been missing for several days.

Renee Pernice was last seen by her husband on Friday morning, family members told police. Investigators said today that they now believe that foul play may have been a factor in her disappearance.

Officer Darin Snapp said someone walking near Sixth Street and Gladstone Boulevard on Saturday found Pernice’s cell phone. Officers then canvassed the area, seeking information about Pernice’s whereabouts.

Few details were available. However, family members said it unlike Pernice to be away from her children for such a long time.

“It would just be out of character for Renee to take off and leave her kids,” said Pernice’s father, Rick Pretz. “Your mind goes to foul play because it is not her character to pull up on her responsibility to her children.”

Family members describe Pernice as a slender woman who is about 5 feet, 7 inches tall with blue eyes and shoulder-length brunette hair.

Anyone with information should call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS (474-8477).

Kansas City Police Search for Missing Mother
KANSAS CITY NORTH, Mo. - Concern continues to mount north of the river Monday night where a mother is still missing.

Her disappearance was reported to police Friday. Police are still unsure what happened to 35-year-old Renee Pernice. No one answered the door to her northland home Monday. No one seems to know where she is.

Her purse and car are still at the house but her cell phone was found on Independence Avenue.

The children's swings are still and eerie quietness smoothers 66th Terrace and Holly Street. Neighbors know mom still isn't home.

"I thought well, it's something you hear about but it's not something you think would happen in your neighborhood," explained Butch Miller.

He watched Renee and Shon Pernice move in 10 years ago. He witnessed the family tree spout three children now ages 6, 8 and 11. Late last week Miller reported their front yard was filled with family time as the couple watched their children play.

"I walked up the street and they were out there in the front yard and they just said hi to me,” said Miller.

By Friday night missing poster signs replaced happiness. Renee's children say she went missing Friday morning.

Tammy Steinkopff lives across the street from the Pernices.

"Her brother came in and started asking questions. We had just come home from shopping and he started asking questions," she said.

"Renee is a stable individual. She's a nurse and went on and got a master's degree in nursing and now teaches nursing," explained Renee’s father Rick Pretz.

Pretz said recently cracks began developing in her marriage.

The couple filed for divorce in 2005, but reconciled. However, they were about to file again. Shon does have an attorney lined up, but the attorney will not speak to the police.

But neighbors who spoke to us never spotted evidence of problems. Neighbors say Shon, Renee's husband, serves in the Missouri National Guard and returned from duty in Iraq last year. Now a family including three young children waits for Renee to return home.

“Her three kids and all of a sudden she's gone. Something, something is not right," said Miller.

Police recovered Renee’s cell phone over the weekend in the northeast area of Kansas City. Her car remains in the garage.

Family members called it “uncharacteristic” of her to do something like this.

Renee is described as tall and slender, about 5 foot 7, weighing 140-145 pounds, with brunette hair longer than her shoulders and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about Renee’s whereabouts should call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS or submit an anonymous tip online

The Kansas City Star (Missouri)

January 8, 2009 Thursday

Missing mom's marriage was troubled

Jan. 8--Shon Pernice doesn't know where his wife is and, although they've had troubles, prays she returns soon for the sake of their three children, his attorney said Wednesday.

No one has seen Pernice's 35-year-old wife, Renee M. Pernice, since Friday. The woman's father, Rick Pretz, and police speculate that foul play was involved in the woman's disappearance.

Investigators have spent several days searching for evidence near the couple's Northland home. No arrests have been made, and no suspects were in custody. Police found her cell phone Saturday near Sixth Street and Gladstone Avenue in the Northeast area of Kansas City.

Pernice's lawyer, Kevin Baldwin, said Wednesday that he has instructed his client not to comment publicly about his wife's disappearance or allow to police to interview him because Pernice feels he is being blamed for her disappearance. Pernice has allowed police to search his van and locker at work, Baldwin said.

Baldwin said Pernice feels helpless.

"He misses her; he wants her back even if she chooses not to be with him; she needs to be there for the kids," he said.

Shon Pernice was asleep in the basement when he said that about 9 a.m. Friday Renee told him she was leaving. He assumed she went for a walk or left with friends or family, Baldwin said. Their children had spent the night with neighbors.

Baldwin said Shon Pernice was supposed to leave that day for a two-week National Guard training session.

Shon Pernice told Baldwin he did not know what Renee was wearing when she left but later realized she had taken her wallet and keys. He talked to police Saturday, took the children to relatives and searched the neighborhoods surrounding their home, Baldwin said.

The couple had been married for about a decade and experienced the challenges most couples routinely experience, he said. Renee Pernice had filed for divorce in 2005 but filed for a dismissal in January 2007.

They hit a rough patch after Shon Pernice, who is an Independence firefighter, recently returned home from a tour of duty in Iraq. They discussed a possible separation, but things had gone well during the holidays, and Baldwin said his client assumed everything was fine.

Pretz declined to comment about his daughter's marriage.

He said family members became concerned Saturday after Renee Pernice's sister phoned the North Kansas City residence and was told that Renee had been gone for some time. Pretz said he and other family members then went to the North Patrol Division to file a missing person's report. They also asked police to accompany them to search the couple's home, which they had keys to, he said.

Although Shon Pernice was not home, family members and police searched through belongings and looked for phone numbers to ask friends where they thought Pernice might have gone, Pretz said.

Shon Pernice showed up later with his attorneys, and they were told to leave, Pretz said.

"We fear something bad has happened. It is unbelievable to feel she walked off and leave her children," he said.

Police Seeking Missing Woman Search Home
Husband Believes Wife Is Alive, Attorney Says; Police Suspect Foul Play

POSTED: 12:16 pm CST January 8, 2009
UPDATED: 6:46 pm CST January 8, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police investigating the disappearance of a Kansas City woman searched a wooded area Thursday, then executed a search warrant at her home.

Renee M. Pernice's father reported her missing on Saturday. Her father said he'd last spoken to the married 35-year-old mother on New Year's Day.

A man found her cell phone on Saturday near Sixth Street and Gladstone Avenue and called him.

Police have said they suspect foul play in her disappearance, as have members of her family, but investigators haven't named any suspects in the case.

"I don't think that, I don't think that she left on her own," her father Fridrick Pretz said.

On Thursday, as investigators combed a wooded area near Cliff Drive and Gladstone Avenue -- a few blocks from where her cell phone was found -- Eric Vernon, an attorney for Pernice's husband, Shon Pernice, said, "Shon is deeply concerned and worried about his wife. He believes she is still alive."

Renee Pernice's parents, stepparents and siblings were on hand for the search. Shon Pernice was not, and Renee Pernice's family said they hadn't been able to reach him or their grandchildren by phone, but Shon Pernice's attorney said he had been trying to reach out to the family.

Linda Lockwood, her mother, said they were staying close to the search area in case anything was found.

"It's the worst you can imagine," Lockwood said. "It's just constant fear."

Later Thursday, police executed a search warrant at the couple's home in the 1100 block of Northwest 66th Terrace. They said it was the first time they'd been able to go through their house.

Shon Pernice and his children left the home without incident as police searched inside.

Capt. Rich Lockhart, of the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department said, "Detectives are now going through the house with crime scene technicians to see if there is any physical evidence inside the house that might help us with this missing person investigation."

Bomb Squad Called to Home of Missing Missouri Mom
Saturday , January 10, 2009

A bomb squad was dispatched to the home of a missing Missouri mom during a search after a hand grenade was found.

The hollowed-out grenade was found Friday in a gun safe in the house Renee Pernice shared with her husband, Army Sgt. Shon Pernice, according to MyFOXKC.com. It turned out to be disarmed. The safe belongs to Shon Pernice.

Neighbors were asked to stay inside until the Kansas City Police Bomb Squad was finished investigating, MyFOXKC.com reported.

Investigators planned to continue their search of the home on Saturday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Renee Pernice was last seen Jan. 2 by her husband, who says she left home about 9 a.m. that morning but he doesn't remember where she told him she was going. Her cell phone was found in a park about 12 to 15 miles from her home.

The search warrant was executed Friday at the house in Northland, Mo. Authorities said it could last for 24 to 36 hours.

The disappearance of the mother of three has been called suspicious. Police say they suspect foul play. No arrests have been made.

Shon Pernice has only spoken to detectives through his attorney. He recently returned from service in Iraq and has said he has been suffering from stress. The couple had been having marital problems.

Anyone with any information about the missing woman is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.

Actually, there is no "Northland" Missouri.  It is in Kansas City, Missouri, north of the river, and in Kansas City we call anything north of the river the "northland" or North Kansas City.

On the local news at 5 today, they said that SHON took the 2 boys next door on Thursday night and asked if they could spend the night; said that he wanted to spend a quiet night with his wife before he reported for National Guard duty on Friday.  The neighbor took the boys back to their house about noon on Friday.

It was reported that a neighbor saw Renee lets the dogs out about 9 a.m. Friday morning, but I'm beginning if they are sure that they saw Renee, and also wondering when the last verified sighting of Renee was.

There is going to be a shoulder-to-shoulder search by 75 volunteers on Monday.  This was also reported on the 5 o'clock local Kansas City news.

Thanks for the clarification on "Northland" I fixed the header. Welcome to Scared Monkeys!

Personally I don't have a good feeling about this.  I have a feeling the husband had a flashback or freaked out or just plain got mad and harmed her.  I don't think she'll be found alive.

I don't think it was a flashback or a freakout.  I think he is just plain weird.  That is what I have heard from people who know him and/or Renee.  Apparently her friends have begged Renee to get away from him but she didn't know whether she was in more danger staying with him or dealing with whatever retaliation there would be from him if she tried to leave him.  The week prior to her death she had told him that she was filing for divorce again and she told him when he got back from his National Guard duty she would have his things packed and out of the house.  This is what has been told to me by people who knew Renee.  Also said that Shon was fascinated with death and killing and loved being in the military because he loved the blood and guts and gore.  He was fired from a hospital (where he was a med tech) for stealing the remaining narcotics left in vials after the dose had been given to the patient.  These are things I am hearing from people who know Shon and/or Renee.

On the local news last night they reported that their two boys stayed at the next door on Thursday, Jan. 1. and that SHON is the one who took them next door and asked if they could spend the night because he wanted a quiet night alone with his wife before he reported for National Guard duty the next day.

Family and Friends Gather for Another Search of Missing Missouri Mom, Husband Doesn't Participate
Tuesday , January 13, 2009

Family and friends of a missing Missouri mother gathered for another search for the teacher but her husband wasn't among them, MyFOXKC.com reported.

Loved ones of Renee Pernice, 35, searched for evidence Monday morning but found no signs of her. A vigil was held in the bitter cold Monday night.

Pernice's husband, Army Sgt. Shon Pernice, and the couple's three children didn't participate in the search, according to MyFOXKC.com. He did attend the vigil, however.

Renee's family said calls to Shon have not been answered and they haven't seen the children since she disappeared Jan. 2, MyFOXKC.com reported.

Shon Pernice has been speaking with police through his attorney, who said he wants his wife to be found.

Monday's search focused on a wooded area near the Pernices' home in Northland, Mo. More than 80 people participated.

Police completed the search of the couple's home on Saturday, after calling in a bomb squad to remove what turned out to be a hollowed-out, inactive hand grenade. Guns and other items were also taken from the house.

Authorities and the missing woman's family say they suspect foul play.

"It's been too long for her to not have contacted any of us, so we feel like something bad has happened," said Renee's mother Linda Lockwood. "She would never, never, never leave her kids and just not say anything to anybody."

Lockwood said she wasn't sure who was taking care of her grandchildren and hasn't been in touch with them since her daughter disappeared.

Renee Pernice's cell phone was found Jan. 3 by a homeless man near Reservoir Park in Kansas City, about 12 to 15 miles from her home, according to MyFOXKC.com.

She was last seen Jan. 2 by her husband, who says she left home about 9 a.m. that day but he doesn't remember where she told him she was going.

Shon Pernice recently returned from service in Iraq and has said he's been suffering from post-traumatic stress. The couple had been having marital problems.

Anyone with any information about the missing woman is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.

Police, volunteers search for missing Northland mother
By GLENN E. RICE
The Kansas City Star
Dozens of volunteers, including Danny Russell, searched Monday for Renee Pernice. They searched an area bound by 68th Street to 60th Street along North Waukomis Drive.
TODD FEEBACK

Kansas City police and volunteers spent Monday searching a wooded area near the Northland home of a 35-year-old mother who has been missing for more than a week.

Dressed in hiking boots, scarves and ski caps, dozens canvassed the wooded area near the home of Renee and Shon Pernice. They combed through brush and debris in an effort to find Renee Pernice, whom no one has seen since a week ago Friday. Pernice’s father, Rick Pretz, and police suspect foul play in her disappearance.

Dozens of volunteers boarded Kansas City Area Transportation Authority buses at an apartment complex near 65th Terrace and Liberty Street. The search began about 8:30 a.m. and concluded just after 2 p.m.

Family members said they remained hopeful that Pernice would be found and were pleased with the outpouring of support.

“It’s just very heart-wrenching,” said Debbie Budenbender, Pernice’s aunt. “It is just incredible the people who are touched by this and are giving up their entire day to be out searching.”

Kansas City Police Sgt. Rob Hargarten, with the fugitive apprehension unit, said police and volunteers covered about two square miles of brush and wooded terrain.

Hargarten instructed the volunteers to look for soil that appeared to be disturbed. He also asked them to keep an eye out for rubber gloves and industrial-size containers of cleaning products.

They were searching an area roughly bound by 68th Street to 60th Street along North Waukomis Drive.

“This is a very unusual case because you have a woman missing from her children, she has a good job, no one seems to know what has happened to her,” he said.

A prayer vigil was held Monday night at Mill Creek Park at 47th Street and J.C. Nichols Parkway.

Late last week, police searched the home of Pernice and her husband.

His lawyer said Shon Pernice had nothing to do with his wife’s disappearance, adding that Shon Pernice hoped that she would return unharmed soon.

Investigators were evaluating whether they need to do more searching in the dwelling. No details were released about what evidence investigators collected from the residence.

Authorities are seeking the public’s help in finding Renee Pernice, described as white, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and slender, with blue eyes and shoulder-length brown hair.

Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (474-8477).

Police, missing Mo. woman's family hope for leads

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With their searches seeming to hit a dead end, police and family members of a Kansas City mother who has been missing more than a week hold out hope for some fresh leads in the case.

Those who know Renee Pernice say the 35-year-old nursing instructor was close to her three children and wouldn't leave them.

"There just isn't any room in our minds to believe that Renee just left," her father, Rick Pretz, said.

Something else that has caused investigators and her relatives to suspect foul play was the discovery of her cell phone a day after she disappeared. It was found on a street several miles from her northern Kansas City home in an area she wasn't known to frequent.

"Right now, her disappearance is classified as a missing person case," said Kansas City police officer Darin Snapp, a spokesman for the department. "But with her phone being located and the family and friends' statements, we believe there is definitely foul play involved."

No one has been arrested in the Jan. 2 disappearance, but police want to talk to the woman's husband, Shon Pernice. As far as they know, he was the last person to see his wife.

Snapp said police are trying to arrange through Shon Pernice's lawyers to interview him.

Shon Pernice is a firefighter in the Kansas City suburb of Independence who also is in the National Guard and served with the Army in Iraq.

The couple's decade-long marriage seemed to be nearing an end when Renee Pernice filed for divorce in 2005. But the divorce proceedings were dismissed in January 2007, according to court records.

More recently though, she had mentioned to family members that she was reconsidering divorce, police said.

Neither Shon Pernice nor his attorneys returned phone calls to The Associated Press. One of the lawyers, Kevin Baldwin, told The Kansas City Star that Pernice feels helpless and that he misses his wife and wants her back home. Baldwin said he has advised Shon Pernice to not talk to police because his client feels he is being blamed for his wife's disappearance.

Police have searched the Pernice family's home, the neighborhood around the house and the area where the cell phone was found.

A larger search of woods near the home was organized by Renee Pernice's family Monday. But the dozens of volunteers that spent hours combing the area left without being any closer to knowing the woman's whereabouts.

Seven detectives are working on the investigation amid their other cases.

"If we receive a tip about a certain area that's too large for these detectives to search themselves, we will allocate whatever resources we feel is necessary to conduct the search," Snapp said. "It helps out a lot when her family is helping with this. Renee has a lot of loved ones who are concerned about her."

The woman's father said she wouldn't abandon her family. He said she was the one who looked after the children — an 11-year-old stepdaughter and two sons ages 6 and 8 — while her husband was away for military duty, most recently serving in Iraq for about a year.

"We can't feel that she just walked off," Pretz said. "And we can't figure out how she would have had any enemy. So if she's truly gone from us, it has to be something that's just one of those crimes that just doesn't make sense at all."

The Kansas City Star (Missouri)

January 17, 2009 Saturday

Police: Missing woman's husband made inconsistent statements

Jan. 17--A missing Northland mother was undertaking divorce proceedings when she vanished around New Year's Day, according to a court affidavit released Friday.

The affidavit for a search warrant also says her husband, Shon Pernice, has made inconsistent statements about the missing woman, Renee Pernice.

Shon Pernice told his wife's relatives that he last saw her on New Year's Day, police said in affidavit filed in Clay County Circuit Court. But several days later, he told detectives he last saw her Jan. 2.

The affidavit also said that:

-- Shon Pernice used an electronic keycard to enter the back door of the Independence hazmat station at 4:26 a.m. on Jan. 3. Pernice, an Independence firefighter, is not assigned to that station. Investigators noted in the affidavit that solvents and other cleaning materials were at the hazmat station.

--Detectives saw Shon Pernice drive the family minivan on Jan. 6 to Line Creek Park -- more than one mile from the family's home -- where Pernice released his wife's dog and drove away. When Shon Pernice did not return, detectives picked up the animal.

Shon Pernice's attorney, Kevin Baldwin, said Friday that he had not seen the court documents and could not comment. Baldwin said he had instructed Pernice not to comment or allow police to interview him because Pernice feels he is being blamed for the disappearance.

Renee Pernice, a 35-year-old mother of two sons and a stepdaughter, has not been seen for at least two weeks.

Her father, Rick Pretz, and police speculate that foul play was involved. No arrests have been made.

The affidavit released Friday was filed to obtain a search warrant for the Pernice home, which Renee purchased before she married Shon. The search took place last week.

According to the affidavit, family members told investigators that the couple was divorcing. Police said Shon Pernice was scheduled to leave for a three-week military session and then was going to move out of the home.

In Renee Pernice's office at Saint Luke's College, investigators later found documents from different law firms that detailed the anticipated divorce. They also found a photograph of Shon Pernice with one of the children and an unknown female.

During the search of the family home, investigators removed dozens of bags of evidence, including firearms and computer equipment.

According to the returned warrant, police removed a fictitious Navy Seal identification card containing Shon Pernice's name and photograph. Also removed were satellite equipment, an external thumb drive, a nursing notebook, a pineapple-style grenade with a hollowed-out bottom and an expended fuse.

Crime scene investigators collected swabs from a lower-level bathroom sink and kitchen sink, as well as patches of carpet from an upstairs closet, a downstairs fireplace and from the basement.

Investigators later interviewed the mother of Shon Pernice's daughter, who visited her father on Jan. 2. About 9:30 p.m., the woman told police, her daughter sent an e-mail to say she was ready to come home and was worried because Renee was not there.

The woman picked up her daughter the following morning but noticed the Pernice family van was parked outside, the affidavit said. She thought that was unusual because the van was always parked in the garage, according to police.

Through a police spokesman, family members declined to comment Friday.

They plan to do so later this morning.

Family members and friends have told police that Renee Pernice was not the kind of mother who would separate herself from her children for any reason.

Police found her cell phone Jan. 3 near Sixth Street and Gladstone Avenue in the Northeast area of Kansas City. On Monday, police and dozens of volunteers searched a wooded area near Northwest 60th Street and Northwest Waukomis Drive, close to the Pernice home.

Renee Pernice is described as white, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and slender, with blue eyes and shoulder-length brown hair.

Anyone with information should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (474-8477).

Here are the court documents (in the middle, under Renee's photo) http://www.kctv5.com/news/18498907/detail.html

Very incriminating.  Shon has an 11 yo daughter with another woman and he picked her up at noon on 01/02 and took her to his house.  She emailed her mother after 9 oclock that night and said she was worried because Renee wasn't at the house, and asked her mother to pick her up.

Police watched show drive to a park 1-1/2 miles from his house, let Renee's dog loose, and drive away.  They watched until they were sure he was not going to come back for the dog, and then they took the dog.

In the file of Renee's divorce attorney is a photo of Shon, one of Shon and Renee's children, and an unidentified female.

There is blood evidence all over the house, luminol and heme positive, including the garage floor, recycle bin, door mat, under the mat, steps and wall going into the living room, living room walls, living room floor, couch, dining room threshold, dining room, kitchen floor, sinks and floor in the kids' bathroom, floor of the master bedroom, shower in the master bedroom.  And on the front strip of a Hoover Steamvac.  And on an axe head in the garage.  There was a refrigerator in the garage and police took the top door of the refrigerator (I assume the freezer portion door) for evidence.

There was a fake Navy Seal ID (Shon had bragged to people he was a Navy SEAL but some who were in the military with him said he was NOT).  There was a stocking hat on the front passenger seat of Renee's car and a multicolored box with the odor of marijuana.  There was an Ameriquest credit card with Shon's name on it cut up in a master bedroom trash can.

There was a glove in a coat pocket with hairs in the glove.  Police took multiple pair of shoes and boots.  There were actually three or four pair of latex gloves taken into evidence, but one in the coat pocket had hair in it.

They took at least 23 rifles and pistols from the house.

In the court documents it said that Renee had bought the house on her own before she ever met Shon and divorce documents show that he was to leave on 01/02 at noon for his National Guard duty and be gone for three weeks, and that the couple had agreed he'd move out by 01/31.  The divorce papers were found in her desk at work.

Missouri Mom About to Get Divorce Before Disappearing
Saturday , January 17, 2009

Investigators collected blood evidence and carpet samples from the home of a missing Missouri mother, who was in the process of getting a divorce when she disappeared Jan. 2, according to a court affidavit released Friday.

Police found disposable latex gloves in a coat pocket and pants pockets with various stains on them when they searched the home of Renee Pernice Jan. 8, MyFOXKC.com reported.

They also discovered a reddish stain on the ceiling and a spot in the garage that tests showed was human blood, the station reported.

Renee Pernice's husband Shon Pernice has made inconsistent statements about when he last saw her, according to court documents.

Shon Pernice told his wife's relatives that he last saw her on New Year's Day, according to the affidavit, but told detectives several days later that he last saw her on Jan. 2.

The affidavit for a search warrant says Shon Pernice, an Independence firefighter, used an electronic keycard to enter the back door of the Independence hazmat station — where solvents and other cleaning materials are stored — at 4:26 a.m. Jan. 3, even though he was not assigned to that station.

Renee Pernice, a 35-year-old nursing instructor, has two sons and a stepdaughter and is not the kind of person who would separate herself from her children for any reason, family members have told police. Investigators believe she is a victim of foul play.

On Jan. 6, detectives saw Shon Pernice drive the family minivan to a park more than a mile away from his home, drop his wife's dog off and drive away. Detectives picked up the dog after Pernice did not return.

Shon Pernice's attorney, Kevin Baldwin, said he has instructed Pernice not to comment or allow police to interview him because Pernice believes he is being blamed for his wife's disappearance.

Police found Renee Pernice's cell phone on Jan. 3 in the northeast area of Kansas City, and on Monday dozens of volunteers searched a wooded area near the Pernice home.

According to a returned search warrant, investigators found a fake Navy Seal identification card with Shon Pernice's name and photograph when they searched the family's home, which Renee Pernice bought before she married Shon.

Investigators also removed from the home satellite equipment, an external thumb drive, a nursing notebook, a pineapple-style grenade with a hollowed-out bottom and a spent fuse.

Police said Shon Pernice, who is a member of the National Guard and has served with the Army in Iraq, was scheduled to leave for a three-week military session and then was planning to move out of the home.

Investigators interviewed the mother of Shon Pernice's daughter, who visited with her dad on Jan. 2. The woman told police that her daughter sent an e-mail around 9:30 p.m. telling her that she was ready to come home and was worried because Renee Pernice was not there.

The woman said she noticed the family van parked outside the home when she picked up her daughter from the Pernice home the next morning, the affidavit said. She said that was unusual because the van was always parked in the garage, police said.

Renee Pernice is described as white, 5 feet 9 inches tall and slender, with blue eyes and shoulder-length brown hair.

comment on this blog by someone who was in his unit in Iraq:

I served with SGT Shon Pernice in Iraq. He was IN MY UNIT. I know that Shon Pernice cheated on his wife, talked constantly about how much he hated his wife…the man honestly said that all she did was ‘**** up my life.’ He lied in an interview to KC Fox News on July 4th…we NEVER GOT MORTARED….EVER…and he timed the explosion in the background to make it seem that way. EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) had a scheduled detonation of some explosive ordinance on that day and he wanted to make it look like he saw “action.” He’s a piece of shit…I know that personally.

Family Of Missing Woman Asks For Clues

The family of a missing woman has asked residents of Kansas City, Mo., to come forward with any clues about her whereabouts.

Rick Pretz said Saturday he was desperately searching for clues regarding the disappearance of his 35-year-old daughter, Renee Pernice, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported.

"We don't want the public to relax and think their information won't be helpful to us," Pretz said.

Pretz praised police efforts to find his daughter, including a search warrant served last Friday at the home she shared with her husband Shon.

Pernice, according to documents, started divorce proceedings sometime around New Year's Day and has not been seen in at least two weeks, the Star reported.

Pretz was accompanied Saturday by Pernice's mother, Linda Lockwood, and one of their other daughters. The concerned father said his family remains confident someone ultimately will be charged in his daughter's disappearance.

"We're going to believe in the legal process," he said. (c) UPI

Police release photos of truck and woman possibly linked to Northland disappearance

http://www.kansascity.com/637/story/999785.html

Kansas City police on Saturday released photos of a truck and a woman they think may be connected to the disappearance of a Northland woman around New Year’s Day.

Renee Pernice, the mother of two, has not been seen since at least Jan. 2.

Surveillance video recorded the truck driving in the area of Gladstone Boulevard from St. John Avenue to Seventh Street or Eighth Street the morning of Jan. 2. Pernice’s cell phone was found near Sixth Street and Gladstone, police said.

Police want to find out who owns the truck and whether anyone saw it in that area or in the first few days of January. The truck appears to be white, or light- colored, with an extended or quad cab and possibly a rack on top.

Two objects in the truck bed, police noted, appear to be large coolers or storage containers.

Police also released a photo of a woman, hoping to learn whether she has any connection to the truck. They said they know the identity of the woman, but want to know whether she would have had access to such a truck and whether she frequented the area near Sixth and Gladstone.

Detective Robert Blehm, who is investigating Pernice’s disappearance, said he hoped people with any information would call, even if they thought their information was inconsequential or too far-fetched.

“Let us sort out whether or not it’s important,” he said. “With the right piece of information, we’ll be able to move the investigation forward.”

Pernice had begun divorce proceedings when she vanished. Police obtained a search warrant for her house after her husband, Shon Pernice, refused to allow investigators inside.

The affidavit for the search warrant said Shon Pernice had made inconsistent statements about his wife’s disappearance. He told his wife’s relatives that he last saw her on New Year’s Day, according to the affidavit filed in Clay County Circuit Court. But several days later, he told detectives he last saw her Jan. 2.

The affidavit also said that Shon Pernice used an electronic keycard to enter the Independence hazmat station at 4:26 a.m. Jan. 3. Pernice, an Independence firefighter, is not assigned to that station. Investigators noted in the affidavit that solvents and other cleaning materials were stored at the hazmat station.

The document also said that on Jan. 6 detectives saw Shon Pernice drive the family minivan to Line Creek Park — more than one mile from the family’s home — where he released his wife’s dog and drove away. When Shon Pernice did not return, detectives picked up the animal.

Anyone with information about the truck is asked to call the homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

HAVE YOU SEEN THIS WOMAN OR TRUCK?
Police released this woman’s photo, hoping to learn whether she has any connection to this truck. They want to find its owner and whether it has been seen.

Police Interview Woman In Case Of Missing Mother
Sharp Accompanied By Attorney, Kansas City Officer Says

POSTED: 3:25 pm CST January 28, 2009
UPDATED: 4:11 pm CST January 28, 2009
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police investigating the disappearance of a Kansas City mother on Wednesday interviewed a woman whose image they released last weekend.

Kelli A. Sharp was accompanied by her attorney, said Officer Darin Snapp, of the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department.

Renee M. Pernice, 35, was reported missing on Jan. 2.

Saturday, detectives released two surveillance images of a pickup truck seen in the area where her cell phone was found that day, then they later released an image of a woman.

They said they knew her identity, but they wanted to know if she had access to the truck, and they asked anyone with any information to contact them directly or, if they wanted to remain anonymous, to call the TIPS Hotline.

Police did not call the woman in the photo a suspect in Pernice's disappearance.

Monday, KCTV5 spoke to the mother of Sharp, a 38-year-old teacher at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Kansas City, Kan., and she said her daughter was the woman in the image police released.

A parent of at least one student at the elementary school looked at the image of the woman police released and said, "That's her. That's Ms. Kelli Sharp."

At that time, police wouldn't confirm Sharp's identity, saying their investigation was ongoing.

After KCTV5's story aired revealing Sharp's identity, Sharp's attorney, Edward Byrne, issued the following statement:

"Area media have today identified Kelli A. Sharp of Overland Park, Kansas in connection with an ongoing investigation of the disappearance of Renee Pernice on January 2. This office represents Ms. Sharp. We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they continue their search for answers in this case.

Ms. Sharp is NOT a suspect in this investigation. She has no knowledge whatsoever concerning the underlying events, nor does she have any information on the whereabouts of Renee Pernice, or what may have happened to her. Ms. Sharp is merely a responsible citizen who hopes to assist law enforcement officials as they pursue every possible lead. No further inferences should be drawn from todays publication of her name.

Kelli Sharp is a dedicated, professional school teacher in the community, and the mother of two. We ask that you respect her privacy until this investigation is brought to a conclusion by the responsible authorities."

Possible Link Between Missing Northland Mom and Decade-Old Mystery

KANSAS CITY, MO - It's been four weeks since a Northland mother disappeared from her home. Renee Pernice's case remains as much a mystery now as it did four weeks ago.

But, now there's been a new development. Her husband Shon Pernice, who she was divorcing, was the last person to see Renee alive.

FOX 4's Tess Koppelman has uncovered some information about a possible link between this case, and another missing woman 10 years ago.

Sources tell FOX 4 that Shon Pernice was at a bar 10 years ago the night a mother disappeared. Star Boomer has never been seen since, and her case remains unsolved.

For 10 years, Hazel Hurtie has held on to that hope that her daughter, Star Boomer, will be found.

She's raising Star's son Cody, but that's the only part of Star the family has left to hold on to.

"It's something if you have lost a child... no grave to go to it's been hard," said Hurtie.

"Yeah, right now I'm ready for that phone call. I'm ready for that closure," said Star's sister Donna Owens.

Star was last seen February 1999 at a bar at 49th and Metropolitan in Kansas City, Kansas.

Witnesses said she got in a fight with a man at the bar. Two men were eventually charged with second degree murder.

But, the case was dropped the court records said to avoid "double jeopardy."

Star's family said it's because no witnesses would testify.

"There were 13 witnesses in the bar and no one wants to come forward or say anything," said Star's sister Cynthia Hurtie.

Cynthia Hurtie is now a private investigator and has never given up on her sister's case. And, when she heard about the Pernice case she said, "My heart just fell to my stomach... I put two and two together. There were three witnesses and Shon was one of them."

Shon Pernice's name was not on the official court witness list. But, a source confirms that he was linked to the Star Boomer investigation.

"Until the day we find closure and justice for her, I can't give up and I have to be a voice for Star," said Cynthia Hurtie.

"I believe we will find her. I really believe that. I've never given up hope," said Hazel Hurtie.

Shon Pernice and his attorney couldn't be reached for comment about this story.

There is a $5,000 reward for information in Star Boomer's case. Call the TIPS Hotline or link to the family's private investigator's web site for the case.

Missing Mo. Woman's Case Now a Death Investigation

Last Updated: 4:37 PM Feb 5, 2009

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) -- The case of a Kansas City mother who's been
missing since early last month is now a death investigation.

Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Daniel White says prosecutors
``believe foul play is involved'' in the Jan. 2 disappearance of
35-year-old Renee Pernice.

White says it was changed from a missing person case because of
the time that has passed since she disappeared. He also says the
woman's family and friends have not heard from her since then.

No one has been arrested in the case. Police believe the woman's
husband, Independence firefighter Shon Pernice, was the last person
to see her. But they say he has given different dates for when he
last saw her.

Police say Renee Pernice had mentioned to family members that
she was considering divorcing her husband.

Relatives of missing woman offer $25,000 reward in her case

Fri, Feb. 06, 2009 12:56 AM
The family of a missing Northland woman announced Thursday a $25,000 reward in her case, which authorities say has now become a death investigation.

Renee Pernice, a mother of two, has not been seen since at least Jan. 2. Her father, Rick Pretz, and police suspect foul play was involved in her disappearance.

Pretz announced at a news conference Thursday in Overland Park that relatives had pooled their money to offer the reward for information about her disappearance. He said the family sensed a short time after her disappearance that the outcome would not be one they would hope for.

“From the moment we heard Renee was missing, we knew what the situation was,” Pretz said. “Maybe you hold it in the back of your mind because you just wish, but logic told us otherwise. So this is not a surprise.”

Pretz said it was uncommon for Pernice not to communicate with family members.

“Renee would not disappear like this,” he said. “She had no reason to leave. Everything was going for her.”

Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said Thursday that “all of the evidence points to the fact that, I strongly believe, Renee Pernice is no longer alive.”

He added: “We believe foul play is involved.”

White did not provide details on what led to that conclusion. No criminal charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made.

“She was a devoted family woman, a dedicated career woman, and had numerous family members and friends with whom she was in frequent contact,” White said. “There has been no contact for over a month. That indicates she cannot make calls or communicate with family and friends.”

Pernice had begun divorce proceedings when she vanished. Police obtained a search warrant for her house after her husband, Shon Pernice, refused to let investigators inside.

The affidavit for the search warrant said Shon Pernice had made inconsistent statements about his wife’s disappearance.

Kevin Baldwin, attorney for Shon Pernice, said Thursday that his client had always hoped that his wife would return

Father of missing woman calls son-in-law’s profile on online dating site ‘disgusting’

Posted on Fri, Feb. 20, 2009 10:26 AM
The father of a missing Northland woman said he found it unsettling that a profile of her husband was posted on a dating Web site.

Rick Pretz said Thursday that he also was troubled that the profile said Shon Pernice, the husband, was divorced.

“It seems disgusting to me that a person would move forward with another relationship and you have not had closure with your previous relationship,” Pretz said.

Renee Pernice, a 35-year-old mother of two, has not been seen since at least Jan. 2. Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said this month that there is substantial evidence that Renee Pernice is dead.

White has not provided details on what led to that conclusion. No criminal charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made.

Attorneys for Shon Pernice could not be reached for comment.

On Thursday, Pretz said he had not seen the Web site profile but was upset about the information it contained.

“The very concept that he was posting — that he was divorced and he has two kids — you have to wonder what he is doing,” Pretz said. “He is not divorced, and he has three kids.”

The third child was from a previous relationship.

Police Capt. Rick Lockhart said homicide detectives had viewed the page but were evaluating to see what, if anything, it might have to do with the case.

“It is something that is very unusual, and we want to check into it,” Lockhart said.

Police said they didn’t know when the profile was posted. It is now off the Internet.

Relatives of Renee Pernice recently pooled their money to offer a $25,000 reward for information about her disappearance. Pretz said it was uncharacteristic for his daughter to leave her children and not communicate with family members.

“We are not under any illusion that Renee has gone off to another place. But daily we hope she is found and we can bring her home and have some closure in that sense,” he said.

“We are hoping daily that whoever caused her death is apprehended.”

Renee Pernice had begun divorce proceedings when she vanished. Police obtained a search warrant for her house after her husband refused to let investigators inside.

The affidavit for the search warrant said Shon Pernice had made inconsistent statements about his wife’s disappearance.

Several years ago, Shon Pernice was questioned after the 1999 disappearance of Star Boomer, who was last seen in a Kansas City, Kan., bar.

He was questioned at the time as a possible witness inside the bar, said Capt. Roger Golubski of the Kansas City, Kan., police. However, Shon Pernice is not a suspect in that case and has not been questioned recently about it, Golubski said.

Husband of missing woman charged with stealing handgun
Posted on Wed, Feb. 25, 2009 10:15 PM
Shon Pernice was charged Wednesday in Clay County Circuit Court with stealing a handgun from a Northland residence that he and his children had visited in late January.

Authorities said that the arrest and criminal charge were not related to the disappearance of Pernice’s wife, Renee Pernice.

Pernice was taken into custody earlier Wednesday at an Independence fire station, said Capt. Rich Lockhart, and was being held on $25,000 bond. No court appearance has been set.

Lockhart said he did not immediately know at which fire station the arrest was made. Pernice declined to speak with investigators and was transferred to the Clay County Detention Center, Lockhart said.

According to court records, the incident occurred Jan. 31 when police were summoned to a residence on a reported theft. Police talked to the homeowner, who told them Pernice was at the residence with his children. At one point, Pernice was alone in the basement for several minutes. Later that evening, Pernice left the home, and the owner tried to set the burglar alarm but discovered that the basement door had been tampered with.

Later that evening, another person who lived at the home arrived after work and went into the basement. He saw the alarm sensor of his door was disabled. He also noticed that a .22-caliber Walther semi-automatic pistol was missing.

On Feb. 1, police said Pernice went back to the home, gave the homeowner the handgun and apologized for taking the weapon, court records stated.

Pernice remains a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife. He has not been arrested or charged in that matter, police have said.

The 35-year-old mother of two has not been seen since at least Jan. 2. Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said this month that there is substantial evidence she is dead. White has not provided details on what led to that conclusion. No criminal charges have been filed, and no arrests made.

Relatives of Renee Pernice have offered a $25,000 reward for information about her disappearance. She had begun divorce proceedings when she vanished.

Missing Mom's Kids Involved in Custody Battle

LIBERTY, Mo. - The custody case for the children of a missing Northland mother will be drawn out at least through the summer.

A Clay County judge Friday set the trial for July 31.

Renee Pernice's two sons, ages 9 and 6, have been living with their dad, Shon Pernice, since she went missing in January.

But Renee's mom, Linda Lockwood, is hoping to change that. She wants the boys to live with her.

"Of course we miss Renee,” Lockwood said. “Having them there would make us know we have a part of her.”

Lockwood filed a petition seeking guardianship of the two boys. In it, she says Shon is an "unfit" parent.

The court documents claim that Shon left the two boys alone at least once, brandished a gun in front of them and tried to take money out of the children's bank accounts in Renee's name.

The petition also highlights Shon Pernice's recent felony charge for allegedly stealing his neighbor's gun.

Shon Pernice has been questioned in connection to his wife’s disappearance, but no suspects have been named in the case.

Prosecutors presumed Renee Pernice dead in February, after nobody had heard from her in more than a month.

Pernice Goes To Court On Gun-Theft Charge
Pernice Accused Of Stealing Neighbor's Gun

UPDATED: 3:46 pm CDT May 5, 2009
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Shon Pernice was in court Tuesday morning. He is charged with stealing a neighbor's gun.

In February, Pernice entered a not-guilty plea to the charges.

KMBC's Peggy Breit reported that it was a routine hearing and that another court date was set for Pernice.

His wife, Renee Pernice, has been missing since Jan.1. Prosecutors said she is presumed dead.

Her family is offering a $25,000 reward in the case for information that leads to her body.

Shon Pernice
(http://www.kmbc.com/2009/0331/19058449_240X180.jpg)

"The first person to provide a tip that is sufficiently clear to lead us to Renee will receive $25,000," said Rick Pretz, Renee's father. "We feel that there's just no reason why -- even the people who have hidden Renee from us -- can't let us have her back and take that money."

Shon Pernice is not charged in connection with his wife's disappearance.
Renee Pernice's mother is seeking custody of the couple's two sons.
"There's a chance, I think, that Shon's going to go to jail for this, and we want to be the safety net that catches them," said Lisa Mooney, Renee's sister.

The grandparents get weekly supervised visits with the boys, but Mooney said she hasn't seen them since before Renee vanished.

"I hope that they know that I love them and I miss them and I really wish that I could see them -- that's probably the toughest part for me right now," Mooney said.

Mooney said Shon Pernice decided that she couldn't see the boys. She said she doesn't know why she was excluded from the weekly visits.

Police said they are still seeking leads on a white pickup truck that was seen in northeast Kansas City where Renee's cell phone was found. The pickup may have been borrowed or stolen on late Jan. 1 or early Jan. 2.

Shon Pernice is due back in court on June 24. He remains free on bond.

Anyone with information in the case can call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.

Renee Pernice’s mother gets temporary guardianship of two boys

7/20/09
A Clay County judge today granted temporary guardianship of Renee Pernice’s two sons to her mother, Linda Lockwood.

Renee Pernice, 35, has not been seen since at least Jan. 2. Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White said there is substantial evidence she is dead. White has not provided details on what led to that conclusion.

The boys’ father, Shon Pernice, remains in the Clay County Detention Center after he was indicted last week on two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of witness tampering in an incident July 4.

“We have been discussing this for a while and everyone is pleased with the outcome,” Lockwood said after the hearing. “It is going to be an exciting time for us. We thought this would be in the best interest of the boys.”

Shon Pernice was indicted after he allegedly threatened to kill two neighbors. He is being held on $250,000 bond.

In addition, Clay County authorities filed a motion Thursday to revoke his $25,000 bond in a separate case in which he is accused of stealing a gun from the neighbors’ basement.

In court documents filed in the revocation case, authorities say his threatening comments were caught on tape during 911 calls he placed.

Investigators said Shon Pernice was the last person known to have seen Renee. He remains a person of interest in her disappearance, but no arrests have been made and no criminal charges have been filed.

Attorneys for Shon Pernice and Lockwood said today that it was in the best interest of the boys, ages 7 and 9, that they be allowed to live with Lockwood while Shon Pernice remained in custody. The boys had been living with Shon Pernice’s mother, Marsha Pernice.

After the brief hearing, Marsha Pernice said she was not working and agreed to have her grandsons live temporarily with the Lockwoods.

“It is going to be amicable,” said Marsha Pernice, who also indicated that she would be able to see the boys anytime she wanted.

After Shon Pernice’s arrest last week, Lockwood and her husband, Doug, asked a judge at an emergency court hearing to be awarded temporary guardianship of her two grandsons.

Shon Pernice previously arranged for his mother to be their guardian in his absence.

The judge instructed the guardian ad litem for the state to investigate whether the children should be removed from their current home. The findings of that investigation were not discussed in court.

Shon Pernice attended the hearing but did not speak. He has a bond hearing on Thursday.

He may ask the judge to reverse the guardianship order and return his sons if he is able to have his bond lowered and be released from jail, said Eric Vernon, his attorney.

Husband Of Missing Mom Pleads Not Guilty To Endangering Sons

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The husband of a woman missing since January has pleaded not guilty to two counts of endangering the welfare of his sons and threatening two neighbors.

The criminal charges from Friday's hearing are not connected to the January disappearance of Shon Pernice's wife, Renee Pernice.

On Friday, Shon Pernice's bond from an earlier handgun theft case was doubled from $25,000 to $50,000. He is seeking to have his bond from an incident on July 4th reduced from $250,000. The hearing on that case is set for next week.

Shon's wife, Renee Pernice, 35, has not been seen since at least Jan. 2. Authorities say Shon Pernice remains a person of interest in her disappearance.

Pernice was indicted last week in connection with a July 4 altercation with neighbors. He was cited for disturbing the peace after he allegedly threatened a neighbor.

Authorities also said Pernice was intoxicated when he drove his sons home from a park.

The two boys are now living with Renee Pernice's mother, Linda Lockwood.

Shon Pernice

LIBERTY, Mo. -- A Clay County judge has modified the bond for Shon Pernice in one of two cases pending against him.

Earlier this month, Pernice's bond was set at $250,000 when he was taken into custody following a dispute with his neighbor over the Fourth of July weekend.

On Friday, KMBC's Dan Weinbaum reported that the judge lowered the bond to $100,000.

Pernice needs to meet 10 percent of the bond set in both cases.

Weinbaum reported that if Pernice does make bond, he will essentially be under house arrest. Conditions set by the judge include an electronic monitor, no alcohol, no contact direct or indirect with witnesses, and no unsupervised contact with his children.

Pernice is a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife, Renee Pernice. He has not been charged in that case.

Renee Pernice has not been seen since at least Jan. 2. Authorities said she is presumed dead.

The couple's children are currently in the custody of Renee Pernice's parents.

Man charged with endangering sons and threatening neighbors posts bond

Shon Pernice, accused of endangering his sons and threatening two neighbors in a July 4 incident, was released from the Clay County jail Friday after posting $12,500 bond.

That case is not connected to the January disappearance of his wife, Renee Pernice, Clay County prosecutors said. No one has been charged in that case.

As a condition of his release, Pernice cannot consume alcohol and must wear a monitoring device. He is allowed to leave his residence to attend alcoholic counseling meetings.

A Clay County grand jury indicted him in the altercation. He had been charged with disturbing the peace after he allegedly stood in front of a neighbor’s house and threatened him.

In addition, authorities allege, Pernice was intoxicated when he was driving his sons home after leaving a park.

Pernice, 36, also faces a felony theft charge for allegedly stealing a neighbor’s handgun.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A new tip sent Kansas City police on another search Thursday for missing Northland mother Renee Pernice.

Pernice hasn't been seen since Jan. 1.

Investigators believe Pernice is dead. Her estranged husband, Shon Pernice, is believed to be the last person to have seen her, police said.

"We think this is going to get a resolution," said Rick Pretz, Renee Pernice's father.

Pretz said he and the rest of Renee's family are convinced she has been killed.

Shon Pernice, who was a firefighter in Independence, has been charged in unrelated crimes, but not in connection with his wife's disappearance.

Pretz said he's pleased that police haven't forgotten about his daughter.

"It's nice to know that the public is giving tips and that the police are out there looking," Pretz told KMBC's Peggy Breit.

Renee Pernice's parents have posted a $25,000 reward for information in the case.

"Finding Renee is worth $25,000 to the first person with a tip good enough that enables us to find her," Pretz said.

On Thursday, officers searched a field north of the river near Interstate 29 and Highway 169, police said.

Search Continues For Renee Pernice

Woman Missing Since Jan. 1, Believed To Be Dead

POSTED: 8:53 am CDT October 12, 2009
UPDATED: 10:03 am CDT October 12, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It has been more than nine months since Renee Pernice went missing and although the spotlight on the case has faded, there is a still a concerted effort to find the missing woman.

"She was pretty awesome besides being a wonderfully loving mother," Renee's father, Rick Pretz, said. "She was the best."

The 35-year-old Northland mother of two disappeared on Jan. 1. Her family said it is gut-wrenching for them to live with her missing each day.

"I want to say we're doing as wonderful as we can be doing," Pretz said. "It's made easier by the fact we have the boys and we can love them up and vice versa."

Beyond the camera and out of the limelight, a group of detectives in the Kansas City Police Department is working to try to find Pernice.

"There not a day that goes by that something doesn't happen in this case," Detective Robert Blehm said. "We need to find Renee, wherever she may be."

The detectives said they have taken numerous tips, followed leads, interviewed family, friends and neighbors and are continuing work on the case.

"Just think about going to bed every single night, not knowing where your child is, if you're a parent."

Police are still looking for the public's help and have a small amount of information they hope will help crack the case.

Surveillance video shows a pickup truck and police said they know who has it. The truck has a light to medium color with a factory rack on top and an extended cab with a smaller side door.

In the surveillance video the truck had two large size coolers or plastic storage bins in the bed of the truck.

"We're sure the person who owns that truck knows that's their truck and it's level of involvement and why we're looking for it, and we'd like them to contact us." Detective Vernon Huth said.

The second piece of information the detectives are working with is the time line of events. Renee Pernice's family last talked to her at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 1. That night, the children had a sleepover at a friend's house and when they got home at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 2, Pernice was gone.

"We need that one tip that's going to bring closure to this case and there are people out in the community who can provide it," Huth said.

There is a $25,000 reward for information that leads to Renee. Billboards with Pernice's face are spread around the city.

"What we need is to find Renee," Huth said.

The only person the police have wanted to question in the disappearance is Pernice's husband, Shon Pernice. The pair were married for 10 years, but he has not been charged in the case.

Shon Pernice has had trouble with the law since his wife's disappearance, including a gun theft charge, a disturbing the peace and child endangerment charge.

Shon Pernice has agreed to give temporary custody of the children to Pretz and Renee's mother.

Judge: No Mention Of Missing Wife In Pernice Gun Case

Next Court Date Set For Jan. 25

UPDATED: 1:15 pm CST December 18, 2009

LIBERTY, Mo. -- A Clay County judge on Friday ruled that there will be no mention of Renee Pernice's disappearance when her husband, Shon Pernice, goes on trial for gun theft.

The judge said the disappearance has no relevance to the gun-theft case and it is, "A sensitive issue and we're not going to go there."

Also on the agenda in the court on Friday was whether Shon Pernice's military experience should be allowed during the gun-theft trial. The prosecution worried whether the experience would solicit a sympathy vote from the jury, while the defense argued it was part of Pernice's background and should be allowed.

Ultimately the defense will have to create a detailed list of specific questions before he is introduced to a jury panel.

The court ruled on Friday that the defense will be able to search the house where the gun was allegedly taken from. The search will be restricted to 30 minutes and only three people will be allowed inside the house.

Pernice also has child endangerment charges pending against him for accusations of threatening his neighbors and driving drunk with his kids in his van. His next court appearance will be Jan. 25 in Greene County, Mo.

Family Still Searching One Year after Disappearance of Renee Pernice

January 2, 2010

KANSAS CITY, MO - One year ago, Northland mother Renee Pernice went missing, apparently without a trace. But her family is still holding out hope that someone will come forward to tell them what happened to her.

Pernice, 35, was last seen on New Year's Day 2009. She was reported missing a day later when she never showed up for weekend plans with her children.

"Renee had too much to live for, no reason for her to walk off," said her father, Rick Pretz. "Children, a job she dearly loved."

A search of the Pernice home resulted in firearms and other items, but no sign of Renee Pernice.

"Shon's the only one who knows the intimate details because there was only two in the house," said Pretz, talking about Renee's husband, Shon Pernice. Police say that they believe that Shon Pernice knows more about his wife's disappearance than he's ever told, and shortly after his wife's disappearance he began what some believe are some bizarre actions.

These included abandoning the family dog in a remote area, taking cleaning supplies from his workplace and allegedly stealing a gun from a neighbor's house.

Later, he was arrested again after getting into an altercation with a neighbor on the 4th of July. But he has steadfastly denied having any involvement in his wife's disappearance. He is set to go on trial in the gun theft case.

"I didn't harm my wife one bit," Pernice told FOX 4 News in March of last year. He declined to comment about the anniversary of his wife's disappearance on Saturday.

Signs asking for help in finding Renee Pernice still line the neighborhood where she lived, and there is still a $25,000 reward for information leading to Renee or to the arrest of anyone involved in her disappearance. But on the anniversary of her disappearance, Rick Pretz watches video of his daughter with her two sons, and says that they still wonder when she's coming home.

"Any parent wants their child back, you want that closure," said Pretz. "We'd like to bring her home, give proper services, have place to go visit."   ::MonkeyTears::

Husband of Kansas City woman missing since January 2009 charged with first-degree murder
By Associated Press
5:38 PM CDT, May 18, 2010

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas City man whose wife disappeared last year is now charged with first-degree murder in her presumed death.

Clay County prosecutors announced the indictment Tuesday of Shon Pernice (per-NEES'), who is being held on $1 million bond.

Pernice has been considered a person of interest since 35-year-old Renee Pernice was reported missing on Jan. 2, 2009.

Investigators believe the 35-year-old nursing instructor is dead, but her body has not been found.

Renee Pernice was the mother of two sons and a stepdaughter. She was last seen on New Year's Day 2009, and had started divorce proceedings.

Shon Pernice's attorney in a different criminal case says he was surprised by the charges, and hasn't yet been hired to represent Pernice.

Prosecutor: Shon Pernice Indicted In Wife's Murder

POSTED: 4:24 pm CDT May 18, 2010
UPDATED: 6:24 pm CDT May 18, 2010

LIBERTY, Mo. -- The Clay County prosecutor said Shon Pernice has been indicted in connection with the murder of his wife, Renee Pernice.

Prosecutor Dan White said Pernice was arrested on Tuesday by the Kansas City police. He is being held in the Clay County jail on a $1 million bond. He has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, the prosecutor said.

Pernice has been considered a person of interest in his wife's disappearance. Renee's body has not been found since she went missing in January 2009.

Members of Renee's family said at a news conference that there is still a $25,000 reward in place for information leading to the recovery of her body or tips that lead to a conviction. They said they are pleased the case is moving forward, but they are anxious to recover her body.

"I didn't think it would come to this," said Shon's mother, Marsha Pernice, who testified in front of the grand jury on Tuesday. "Shon's not that kind of person. I think the prosecutor is wrong."

Pernice will be arraigned at 9 a.m. Thursday in Clay County.

Pernice pleads not guilty to murder charge

A Northland man accused in the slaying of his wife, who has been missing for almost 17 months, pleaded not guilty today to a first-degree murder charge.

Shon Andrew Pernice, 35, appeared in Clay County Circuit Court two days after being indicted by a grand jury even though authorities have not found the body of Renee M. Pernice, 35.

“I plead not guilty, sir,” Shon Pernice told Circuit Judge Shane T. Alexander.

Pernice also said he needed an attorney from the public defender’s office to represent him. He is next scheduled to appear in court on May 27, when the judge will hear evidence on the request.  ::MonkeyViolin::

Pernice remains in a Clay County jail on a $1 million bond.

On Tuesday, Kansas City police arrested Pernice at the Kansas City, North, home he had shared with his wife and their two young sons.

Authorities have yet to reveal any details on how they think Renee Pernice was killed. Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White previously said police had substantial evidence that she is dead.

Marsha Pernice, Shon’s mother, attended the hearing and said she was saddened to see her son accused of murder.

“I want to go up and hug him,” she said.

Also attending the hearing was Rick Pretz, Renee’s father.

“It is disturbing to see someone who has been part of your family up there in that situation,” Pretz said.

Investigators have said Shon Pernice was the last person known to have seen her.

Renee Pernice had begun divorce proceedings when she vanished. Family members pooled their money to offer a $25,000 reward for information about her disappearance.

Authorities had been watching Shon Pernice in recent weeks, worried that he might get word of the indictment and try to leave the area.

Police and federal authorities on Tuesday saw Pernice running errands. They said he was preparing to move into a duplex in Liberty.

Pernice, a former Independence firefighter, was charged last year with felony theft after allegedly stealing a neighbor’s handgun. Authorities said the gun charge was not related to the disappearance.

Pernice also was charged last year with disturbing the peace after he allegedly stood in front of a neighbor’s house and threatened him. Authorities also allege Pernice was intoxicated that day when he was driving his two sons home from a park.

Pernice was on electronic monitoring while awaiting trial in those cases.

No body didn't stop Clay County prosecutors before   ::MonkeyGavel::

Clay County, Mo — Authorities have not found the body of Renee Pernice. But that significant fact did not stop a Clay County grand jury from indicting Shon Pernice, her husband, for allegedly killing her.

Prosecuting a defendant for murder without the body of the slain victim has been done before in Clay County.

Clay County Prosecutor Dan White, for the second time in four years, will be trying a man for murder without the body.

White on Tuesday, when he announced the indictment of Shon Pernice for murder, cited his office’s successful prosecution of John Brinson.

A Clay County jury in October 2006 convicted Brinson of killing his wife, Marilyn E. Brinson,47, in 2002. It took the jury just one hour and 40 minutes to decide Brinson was guilty.

Marilyn Brinson vanished in mid-July 2002. She was reported missing from the couple’s home in North Kansas City in Clay County.

Authorities never found the body of Marilyn Brinson.

“Neither the victim’s body nor any of her remains were ever recovered,” White said in a statement following the conviction.

But he said police gathered “an impressive amount” physical evidence like DNA in the form of a bloody palm print from the crime scene “all pointed to John Brinson as the murderer.”

White said medical testimony and science combined to conclude Marilyn Brinson was dead.

John Brinson is now serving a life sentence in prison.

The volume of blood found in her vehicle that was abandoned in Kansas City in Jackson County “was too great for her to have lived,” White said. Also, more blood was found near the residence and a witness’ testimony of hearing a gunshot sound near the time of Marilyn’s disappearance added up to murder.

“It’s a lot harder,” White said on Tuesday.

He said there is substantial evidence that Renee Pernice is dead.  He declined to reveal what evidence exists.

According to a court affidavit, Shon used an electronic keycard to enter the back door of the Independence hazmat station where solvents and other cleaning materials are stored.

He entered the station on Jan. 3 despite not being assigned to that station.

Marsha Pernice, his mother, has said her son is innocent and that Renee could return home one day, according to statements she made to media outlets.

White said a defense attorney could easily make that case during trial, saying that she ran away and is missing, not dead.

37-year-old man charged in the death of his missing wife is seeking a new venue for his trial.

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) — A 37-year-old Missouri man charged in the death of his missing wife is seeking a new venue for his trial.

A Clay County grand jury indicted Shon Andrew Pernice of Kansas City last week. He's charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 35-year-old wife, Renee Pernice.

Shon Pernice had been considered a person of interest since Renee Pernice was reported missing Jan. 2, 2009. Her body has not been found.

The Kansas City Star reported Thursday that attorney Eric Vernon said media coverage would prevent Pernice from receiving a fair trial in Clay County. He also asked for a reduction in Pernice’s $1 million bond.

Circuit Court Judge Shane Alexander set a hearing on that issue for next Thursday.

No reduced bond for Shon Pernice

A Clay County judge has denied a bond reduction for a Northland man accused in the slaying death of his wife, who has been missing for more than a year.

Shon Andrew Pernice, 37, was indicted two weeks ago by a Clay County grand jury with first-degree murder even though authorities have not found the body of wife, Renee M. Pernice, 35.

Pernice is being held on a $1 million. His attorney, Eric Vernon, said Pernice has complied with the requirements set while being on electronic monitoring. However, authorities have said Pernice is a significant flight risk. Investigators said when they arrested Pernice several weeks ago, he was preparing to move to a duplex in Liberty.

KCTV5's Top News Stories Of 2010
December 19, 2010
The KCTV5 news staff covers thousands of stories each year, but to narrow down the list to the top five is a difficult challenge. The news staff at KCTV5 voted and came up with theirs and we tabulated the results.

It was noted by a number of KCTV5 staffers that 2010 did not feature a huge story in Kansas City. While there were plenty of worthy nominees, there was not one story that simply dominated headlines.

(snip)
5. Shon Pernice Charged With Murdering Wife - The Pernice case has been one of the biggest for nearly two years, since Renee Pernice disappeared on New Year's Day 2009. In June, Shon Pernice was charged with murdering his wife, despite the fact that she, or her body, have ever been found.

Pernice faced a series of minor run-ins with the law following his wife's disappearance, including a child endangerment charge, but was not charged with any crime related to his wife's disappearance for nearly 16 months.
Members of Renee's family said at a news conference following Pernice's arrest that there was still a $25,000 reward in place for information leading to the recovery of her body or tips that lead to a conviction. They said they were pleased the case was moving forward, but they are anxious to recover her body.

"I'd like to say that there's not a day that goes by that we don't think about Renee," Linda Lockwood, Renee's mother, said. "It's impossible to have your daughter murdered and not wake up everyday with that on your mind."

Pernice was granted a change of venue for his trial to St. Charles, Mo.

FOX 4′s Katie Ferrell asked police if they believe the remains are that of Renee Pernice of Kansas City North, who disappeared in January 2009 and whose body has never been found. However, police are only saying that the remains appear to be human and have been there for some time.

Pernice’s cell phone was found about a mile away from Kessler Park shortly after she disappeared. Shon Pernice, Renee’s husband, has been charged with her murder.

http://www.kshb.com/dpp/news/crime/Shon-Pernice-pleads-guilty-to-voluntary-manslaughter-in-the-death-of-his-wife

LIBERTY, Mo. - Shon Pernice pleaded guilty Tuesday afternoon to voluntary manslaughter in the death of his wife. Shon Pernice, 39, said he hit Renee Pernice on Jan. 2, 2009. She fell down the stairs and died.
 ::snipping2::
“Shon today, began accepting the responsibility and consequences for his past mistakes. He admitted today that he made two enormous mistakes that had lasting consequences for many people,” said Eric Vernon, Shon Pernice’s attorney.
 ::snipping2::
“I think he threw it in the dumpster just like we thought,” Clay County prosecutor Daniel White said Tuesday. “We had evidence for a long time that he accessed the dumpster in northeast area about a mile from where her phone was found. No one should ever think her body will be recoverable ."
 ::snipping2::

This is sickening.  Apparently they didn't even require him to tell what he did with her body as part of the slap-on-the-wrist they gave him.  I no longer wonder why there has been no movement in the Baby Lisa case.
