Hi monkeys, I was reading the TL thread for the first time and a question was asked about where big n nasty was going when she was suppose to be at work. Early on M. Murphy had stated that big n nasty was going down the road or to a park or friends house and waiting for G & C A to leave the house and her and Caylee returned to the house. I do believe M Murphy and AD I believe it was AD who gave close to identical statements,have rehearsed the story to set a mental defect stage for nasty. I believe that was done just to save her life and do not believe anything M Murphy says now,but do believe m murphy was being honest back then in the beginning when baby Caylee was just missing. I hope that made sense as I have had a tuff couple of days and have not been sleeping well at all.

Not trying to change the subject here but On June 24, 2008 Jessie Grund said he heard Caylee in the back ground while he was talking to Casey I think maybe she so evil she might have had a video playing in the back ground just so someone might think she was with her.
Did he every say what he thought Caylee said in the back ground.
Casey is so evil I wouldn't put it past her sitting around watching her daughter after she killed her and threw her in the trunk she most likely enjoyed knowing she was finally free of her! ::MonkeyNoNo::

IIRC military families have to make out a will ( which sadly is understandable) being that the father is deceased ( as they say) and KC is the only parent it kinda makes sense.

I've seen this photo before, but it was posted recently on orlandosentinel.com with the latest doc dump. The photo always bothers me because Caylee looks VERY frightened and upset and looks like she has a cut on her lip and/or a fat lip. Casey has her usual sly, evil grin on her face.

It suggests that the poem on the Anthony home computer ("Everyone dies, everyone lies"???) could not have been written by Casey because she was not at home -- she was near/at Amy Huzienga's place. Interesting.

In this same document, the last page details the seizure of phone records for a Kevin Kirkland and an Erica Gonzalez. Someone named Kyle Kirkland was one of the people Casey spoke with on her cell phone on July 15, 2008, the day she claimed that "the nanny called her from a private number" and she spoke with Caylee at that time. I have also read that Kyle Kirkland was investigated in the Donna Jou case.

Then there is also that person with the last name Gonzalez -- Erica -- who is that?

This Casey McGuire, is that not the person that kio said had called her instead of KC A??? remember when she said KC called and asked to borrow money,then changed it and said she was mistaken,it was a different KC and isn't mcguire the name she gave??     ::MonkeyConfused::

She said it was "Casey Williams," which is also just wild, because of this "Keith Williams" we are hearing about in these latest documents, who apparently called in a tip in the remains area in August and was searching the area on his own in October.

They checked KCs cell records to see if she could be the author of the poem, they deterCould have been a rough draft for Cindys Myspace blog on July 3rd as poem originated July 2nd. Sorry to post and run, but I am tired and just wanted to note this:  on page 48 of this document: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/media/acrobat/2009-03/45413764.pdf  a Zenaida is interviewed.  She has a sister Josephina Flores, a mother Maria Rouse, and a son Zachary.  Were these the names Casey had mentioned?  I know Zachary was, but I think Josephina and Maria were also.  Or my brain could be fried by too many names in this case!  I thought I remembered Casey saying that Zenaida's mother was Maria and her sister was Josephina.  If she did, then she must be doing some kind of identity theft, because all the names match, and these people didn't know Casey.

No, Casey said Zenaida's mother's name was Gloria, father Victor and sister Samantha.

Yeah it was strange as soon as I tried to click on it the YOUTUBE page came up stating that it was no longer avialable and had been deleted something to that effect.  IMO I found that strange cause it was really quick..glad that SEA could find a copy for me so I could see what the dicussion was about.

I watched the clip, I haven't visited the bond hearing testimony in quite a few months but I caught something distinctive listening to it again.   Around 1.32 into the tape Cindy begins to say  "I am prepared to do anything I can to protec..." and then says "ummm to find Caylee."  A few seconds later she said she was willing to sell her house and then stated  "I'll find a way to protec...to find my daughter a way to get out of here."    She wanted to say protect her daughter twice!   LISTEN

Yuri then took the stand & Cindy had a fit because they brought up the date confusion after they recovered the video & camera but needed to talk to Cindy's elderly father...she wasnt worried about her frail dad, she was worried that the cover was beginning to unravel publicly.  From the night before this hearing is when Cindy went on her open adamant campaign against LE.

NOW watch Cindy coming out of court that day, she comes out of the door spitting words "Caylee is missing & continue to look for Caylee" before she's even asked a word.  This youtube shows quite a bit of the infamous "rotten pizza" exchange

A_News... To clarify LE never mentions what the poem is, it may not be the " Everyone Lies" poem. It was a poem that they determined was written on 7/2 but not by KC. its in the docs... if you read that paragraph it does not mention what poem, I doubt we will ever know. I suspect it was written by Cindy lamenting her loss but thats MOO   ::MonkeyWink::

(#1) GO to page 920 of the following document, which shows details from the the Anthony computers released by OCSO back in September.

You will see that it is discussing the "Everyone Lies, Everyone Dies" poem and notes that it was created on July 2 at 10:42 am and that the author is CINDYMANT of the Gentiva Corporation.

Sea,I just thought it was interesting because it shows Cindy wanted to make sure she had control from the start.But as Pooky pointed out I don't think it was ever proven that there was a will or power of attorney..I think it's sad that Caylee had family she never spent time with.

My dil had papers drawn up for the kids after my son died.She made all the arrangements herself without influence.

Note: It looks like the poem was found on the Compaq laptop computer, which Casey could have been carting around with her to Amy's??? However, the fact that the detectives found the poem to be written by "CMANTHONY of the GENTIVA Corporation is strange. Now, it could be that the Compaq laptop was something Cindy used for work and Casey took for her own personal use at times. Just trying to figure out some scenarios here.

I am suspicious of both Cindy and Casey, however. Cindy is totally UNTRUSTWORTHY. I don't care what anyone says. She can lie her ass off with a straight face and cold eyes that stare straight ahead, unflinching. She is a scary woman, if you really study her.

The dynamic lying duo (cin and KC) told DCF that the bio dad had set up a trust fund for Caylee.  That does not sound logical that a kid, who does not pay child support, would set up a trust fund.  Cin did not seem surprised my this statement of KC's.  If that were me, I would be demanding to see the proof, especailly if I am supporting her.  Cin is not surprised by KC's lies, even when she 1st hears them.  That's enough for me to conclude that lying is a common trait with this family.

Catching up here...but wasn't Cindy's laptop used by Casey? So, if this poem originated on the laptop, we can't rule CRZY out as the possible author. Seems like the whole family knew each other's passwords (remember the female BH caught SinSin logged into Crzy's account, doing email? And when Crzy found out, SinSin said maybe it'd help bring Caylee back?). So, if the poem was ON THE LAPTOP, then I'm sticking with the "crzy wrote it" theory.

You know, it just seems that as greedy and money hungry the A's are they would have sucked Caylee's father dry.  And...they would have found a legal way to keep Caylee to themselves and not shared her with her daddy.  That's what doesn't make sense to me.  He would have been another money avenue even if he was bagging groceries at the store making $5.00 an hour. 

LE in one of the documents awhile back said they contacted the lawyer Cindy said they went to have guardianship of Caylee if something happened to Casey, but LE said the attorney never heard of the A's. 

Was the attorney's name Paul Kelly that they went to?  I think it was now that I'm thinking about it.  Hmmm....

Anyway..back ontopic here (just in case Mom is here) So, if it was on the laptop, and the cellphone pings place Crzy at someone else's house, then we can still surmise that Crzy wrote it.

Also, about those pings...Crzy watched enough crime shows to know that your phone is your tracker. Surely she would have know to a) leave her phone or b) take the battery out of the phone    when she was out doing ....whatever. The pings are important, but only to a point. Yes, I know her phone was her lifeline, but I'm just saying that we can't say 100% where she was, based on her pings.

Paul Kelley was the trustee on the first Caylee Marie Anthony trust.  He has also been said that he handled some worker's comp stuff for George.  IIRC the POA for Casey has proved to be a rumor (a little fuzzy on this one).  This used to be the page for Bichler & Kelley PA http://www.bichlerlaw.com/ Paul Kelley's firm, its gone now.  There are pictures of Paul Kelley on SM, if someone wants to search for them.

  I usually do not post because you guys all do a much better job (and I'm too busy reading all the posts) but, if I'm not mistaken,,,Paul Kelly is an attorney,,,he is the original attorney charged with setting up and administrating the first Help Find Caylee Account (or whatever the name of it was)...please excuse, with all the facts, some things are fuzzy...when Sean Krause and company began to follow the money and question how the money was used,,,the account and records were shown to the public (per Najame and Atty. Kelly) and at that time, that account was closed and Atty. Paul Kelly, wisely, got away from this case.

I agree.  I think it was definitely Casey.  I'm wondering if Casey even had her own login info for that laptop or if Cindy's was just always used.   I'm sure LE knows the answer to that question.  I'm sure Casey was on it while at Amy's.   

Yeah . . . I just find it so strange that OSCO makes a note of saying that Psycho's cell phone pings placed her elsewhere and the poem's originator was "CMANTHONY of the GENTIVA corporation." But there really is no reason for Cindy to write a poem like that. I guess I just can't trust either one of them, Cindy or Casey, that I have this pressing need to find evidence that shows she knew Caylee was dead since June 15! Cindy's actions -- such as returning to work after finding the car with the human decomposition smell and saying she would just let Casey explain herself, plus not seeing her granddaughter (WHO LIVED IN HER HOME!) for a month and never getting the police involved until the month was up -- are just as offensive to me as Casey's own actions. She was Caylee's grandma, for crying out loud.

OK, I went to a site that shall remain nameless, not WS. The author Lazlo is someone we know from the Natalee Holloway case. He / she has been quoted here before, so I am going to post what I copied. Have we any idea of the content of these messages yet ?  The fact that there were so many communications between the family members on July 3 and July 4 is interesting but the content might be an eye opener.
Why were there 93 contacts between Casey and fam Jul 3?

"Below a list of the calls and sms's from and to Casey just from and to her family, she did have regular contact with "Anthony home" and Cindy (not with Lee) by phone, around 3 contacts a day, whether a short call or an sms.

But on July 3 (followed by just after midnight) she had 93 contacts by phone with her family, most of them with her mother followed by some extensive exchange with Lee and his at the time girlfriend.

Sorry in advance if this has been adressed before, I have not read everything, and just wondering if there was some special reason for the amount of contact on that specific day, maybe the family had found out about the theft from the GP? TIA

I live and die by emails and the phone at work. I like the quiet at home. I do swear sometimes when the phone goes or when the mail butler delivers mail here at home. Cell phones are good for emergencies. And much needed by people with children who you want to keep track of or let them have when they are away from the house. The ten year old gets her Mumma's when she goes out without them and is with friends, just in case. And she has never lost it or abused it.

I don't have a cell phone either. My sister wants one real bad lol she is 17 and all she wants it for is mainly to text. I asked her why not just call the person and talk to them that would be a lot easier than typing it out on the phone. She said it is easier IDK seems pointless to me lol.

I guess I should have guessed text messages, watching my daughter doing that quite often, drives me nuts also.  ::MonkeyRoll::

I have had a cell phone for all of 2 years and used it (got it for emergency use) probably less than 10 times. None were emergencies though.

And I don't even have text messaging capabilities, so have never sent one of those. LOL

And, no, the phone does not have a rotary dial!  J/K!

I am old but do have a cell phone....used mostly to find other family members in Walmarts when we get separated. lol. Have no earthly idea how to send a text message on it. Don't even know how to get voice mail most of the time.

My Mom and I share a tract phone. I think that's what they call it. When we travel it goes in the car. I live far from town BUT...If I needed it I would have to walk a mile...climb a tree...shuffle out on a branch, and stand real still to get 1 bar!!

It is still winter here, so I am still looking over documents.  I know most people have been interested in the licorice story from J Hoover.  I really can't believe it.  What I found interesting was the story he told, that Dominic Casey told him.  That Lee refused to go when they went to pick him up to get him fingerprinted.  Lee said on a previous visit to LE, when he gave DNA, that he had been held, basically against his will for 2 to 3 hours, told they were going to do a mug shot of him, etc.  Supposedly he had to stop on the way home from that experience and he was crying on the side of the road.  Now this I find much more fascinating than the licorice story!!!!

We went over that this morning. It has been determined that the rip off poem was written on the laptop. Therefore, we cannot exclude KC as having written it, because, even tho her pings place her not at the home (1313 Mockingbird Lane), it is entirely possible that she was logged in under Spindy's account. Which I think makes it KC's writing, on the laptop that her mom wanted her to return to her, that shrew who calls herself mom.

I think most of Hoover's stuff will be excluded as it sounds a lot like hearsay. I haven't read it, but unless Hoover himself actually saw it, or someone else corroborates his story, it's just hearsay. (As fun as it is to mock them...the court won't bother with the gossip)

An IP address is given by the Internet Service Provider. Some people have static IP addresses (most cable subscribers do, for instance) and some IP addresses change each time the user connects to his ISP.

It would depend. If Casey were connecting to an unsecured wifi connection, (someone else's) it would show that person's IP address while using their connection.

This is what I think she was doing communicating with Mark Hawkins daily (serviceman based in Cali).   I think she intended to go to Cali (messages to him in 2007 indicate Casey was leading him on about a relationship).  She had alot of conversations with Mark Hawkins & she bumped into his mother at Target on 7/10 (when she was using Amy's checkbook) & said that she even discussed it with her mother that she was planning on going out there to visit her son.   Casey reportedly told Mark Hawkins that there was something she had to tell him he wasnt going to like (this might have something to do with his sister-Lee had a relationship with her).

7/3  a few interesting things occurred

On 7/3/08, Casey texted me “if my mom or dad try to call you, don’t answer. I will explain it later, but for right now just stay out of it.”    Jesse Grund

The name evades me at the moment but one of Casey's friends was with her during the day and overheard Casey arguing with her mother on her cell phone.

Lee reported that he went to a club looking for Casey based on a comment he saw on her facebook

Cindy wrote her myspace blog message

7/2, the day before Casey goes to get her "Bella Vita" (beautiful life) tattoo.  Reportedly part of the argument was Cindy wanted to know if Caylee was coming home so that she & George could take her to go see fireworks for the 4th of July.    Cindy later says that Casey told her she was in Jacksonville tryng to reconcile with Jeff Hopkins -note Tony is in NY & Casey stayed at Ricardo's with Amy.  Casey goes to a 4th party (ends up staying with Will the night)  Casey picked Tony up with his car at the airport on the 5th.    July 8th Casey takes Amy to airport for her PR trip, Casey is now using Amy's car for the week, later being seen at Target using Amy's checkbook & again on 7/10 (Ann Chase, Mark Hawkins' mother sees Casey).

In the weeks after her 2-year-old daughter Caylee's disappearance, Orlando mother Casey Anthony apparently collected photos of skulls and sketches of skeletons kissing, newly released police documents show.

Anthony, 22, is in jail on a first-degree murder charge and other offenses related to the death of her daughter.

Orange County Sheriff's Office released about 1,100 pages of interview reports and photos this week, part of an unusual strategy of periodically publicizing troves of evidence in the case against Anthony before the case goes to trial.

Caylee Anthony disappeared in early June but wasn't reported missing for about a month by her family. Police records show the images of skulls and skeletons were posted to Casey Anthony's online photo account on June 26.

The reason for Anthony's interest in the images wasn't clear. One skull image, labeled "apple of death," appears to be a photograph of a apple carved into a skull by an artist named Jaakko Ramala.

In December, a utility worker found the girl's skull, bones and other belongings in a plastic bag in a wooded area about a half-mile from the Anthonys' home.

Casey Anthony has said she last saw her daughter when she left her with a baby sitter — whom she says kidnapped the girl. Police have said that story is a lie and that no such baby sitter exists.

The documents also show that Anthony's then-boyfriend Anthony Lazzaro wore a wiretap in the police investigation when talking with her brother Lee Anthony. The recordings contradict the baby sitter story.

And in an Oct. 14 interview with police, detectives grill Casey Anthony on being evasive, according to the transcript.

"Do you have any interest in helping us?" an investigator asks her.

"I've had interest in helping law enforcement from the beginning," she replies. "Unfortunately, my hands were literally tied and I was put in a position where someone's trying to trick a confession out of me."

Later, she gave a tepid assertion of her innocence, the documents show.

"I try to keep an open mind when it comes to things, but if I'm innocent, that's, that's as far as it goes," Anthony says. "I'll take this as far as I need to prove my innocence, which I guess is my point in all this."

Among other revelations contained in the just-released paperwork is an expert's analysis that Caylee's remains had been in the woods for at least four months before they were found.

Last week, authorities publicized other case papers outlining that evidence found on or near Caylee's remains is a match to items collected at the house where she lived with her mother and grandparents.

Casey Anthony's murder trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 12. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ya know Klaas, that's just it uploading those images after Caylee's death, it just seems to be like a morbid consciousness of guilt - if her daughter was "missing" why on earth (kept in secret or not) would any parent collect pics of skeletons during that period of time, there is no logic.   Even if it was related to music or something unrelated during that time its pretty safe to conclude its not something a parent going thru a trauma would be uploading or even be able to view easily.

I have had a phone since they were called "car phones."  LOL  My company provided them for me, and they were VERY expensive.

My first one was installed in my car, then I bought a "bag phone" and it was the "berries" because I could use it in more than one car. Then came my first handheld........now, that baby was enormous, but I loved it. They were very strong in their signals, so you never were cut off. Now, the smaller the better for me. I love the new small Blackberry.

I have always felt the body was moved more than once. It was in the back yard, and then moved somewhere else before the final dumping place. I have wondered if she opened the bag and that was what she saw. It would take very little time for the loss of all the skin almost in the summer Florida heat. 

Since I first saw that apple picture, I thought that would look very similar to what a partially decomposed skull would look like.

I remember in a doc dump it stated that LE contacted the Atty that Cindy had mentioned and he said that no document regarding Caylee had ever been drawn up and the Ants had never approached him to do one either.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

 I know I never post a lot, but I read almost all of the posts daily. I do have one question about a possible Casey defense scenario that really bothers me.
How can the Defense team put an accidental death scenario out there when the remains were found with "Duct Tape" wrapped around the head? IMO, there is no accidental scenario out there that would in any way involve duct tape wrapped around Caylee's head. Maybe someone else has posed this question and I just missed it, but I'm just sayin' no way could this ever be misconstrued as an accident.

I am with you Samiam, and I DO like green eggs and ham.  I am assuming that the defense is attempting to reach those that do not have as much invested in this case as us Monkeys and other bloggers do.

Guess it depends on how the defense decides to spin things and who they are throwing under the bus at the time of trial.  If the nanny did it - I am sure JB will say, it was a message to tell her I warned you not to talk till timer55 was up. 
If they are blaming - pointing fingers at family or accident - it was just to make it look like nanny did it.
My warped mind has even wondered if they will say she did it after the fact (accident) so as to not drip fluids on cindys anal retentive clean house!  I can see casey being stupid enough to think that would stop the decomp fluid that was leaking in the back of her car.

Well under the photo there is a link - I clicked that - then went to her page under contacts - sent some instant message thing (???? twitter - all that is beyond me!) but then it showed an email addy - so I wrote to that and asked if she was the one.  Not sure mine are that funny, but I was actually wishing I had Brandi or Desi email addy to have them do the graphics for me the other day when we thought it was her bday!

It would mean that Casey "staged" an abduction/murder in disposing of the body to cover an "accident" - if the defense were to present that it may explain an accident case scenario BUT they cannot get around how heinous the disposal is inandofitself.

I've deliberated alot over the past two days taking a look at what we know so far since there was so much discussion on Casey's defense team growing with high profile attorneys compensating for Baez's lack of trial experience & idiotic behavior, its brought me back to the same conclusion...Casey killed Caylee with premeditated thought.

Hello Sam ( may I call you that?)  I think they are thinking along the lines that Caylee was killed in an accident.  It has been said Casey treated her dead pets the same way.....She would bundle them up and put a heart with them.  Forgive me, I cant remember the exact story.

You are correct in saying it all depends on what Spin the Defense puts on things, but I for one felt she was guilty of "having a hand in Caylee's disappearance" from the time I heard the interview with LE at Universal.

This is my opinion and this is probably kind of gross but, it was wrapped all the way around the head entangling the hair in the tape. If it was bound tight enough it wouldn't have come off, especially if the body was left undisturbed long enough.

Yep..I agree..she was getting ready to go to SoCal to visit Mark the marine and she had a passport, that her family wasn't aware of.  I think she thought she could dissappear and make it look like a kidnapping for both herself and Caylee...with Caylee unfortunately being killed.(If anyone caught up with them).  I absolutely (to use an Anthomy family phrase) belive that she didn't plan or think much ahaead other then dumping Caylee, the car and then getting to So Cal and then dissappearing into Mexico..if caught, she would use the story they were kidnapped and Caylee was killed.

God I hate to expound further but yes if the duct tape was bound tight catching the hair, there might have been creases that formed at the mouth & nose locking it in place, the tissue deteriorated but the tape or clench of the jaw shut did not.

Hi Monkeys!  Desi's here for a bit.  Saw the discussion on duct tape, and wanted to share this, from an unrelated case:  an autopsy of a 20-year-old murder victim from North Carolina whose remains were found inside two garbage bags with duct tape around the skull about three months after his death.   Very disturbing report actually; he was forced to dig his own grave, then shot in the head and buried there.  Then his remains were moved to a different spot, similar to the environment where Caylee was found, where it was discovered by cadaver dogs after a confession.

The remains were "in a state of advanced decomposition" -- "almost skeletonized" with minimal flesh remaining.  Duct tape was still around the skull.  Vegetation matter was growing through the remains.

No, Casey Williams was the mysterious "other" Casey Kio claimed to have spoken with (when she backtracked from her original story about hearing from Casey A.).  Sorry if someone else has answered this in the meantime.

Interesting note:  In her original version, Kio also noted that when Casey (Anthony) called to ask to borrow a couple hundred dollars, she did not call from her cell phone, which Kio had programmed into hers.  Kio did not recognize the number, but said it was a 407 (Orlando) area code.  Hmm..

On July 20th, 2008, at approximately 2025 hours, Kiomarie Torres Cruz called me back to apoiogize that she was mistaken when she told me she talked to Casey Anthony on July 9th, 2008. She said she confused Casey Anthony with her friend Casey Williams. She said she actually spoke with Casey Williams, who also has a 2 1/2 year old girl. She said she spoke with Casey Williams today and that is what jogged her memory. She said Casey William's called her and wanted to borrow some money for her personal circumstance. She said she would call me tomorrow with the telephone number that Casey Williams used to call her. She said she thought that Casey Williams called from her boyfriend's apartment.

Just thinking here... of the talk about Casey's phone pinging near Amy's when the "Diary of Days" document was created on the Anthonys' home computer on July 2... Wonder if there was some phone-shuffling or trading going on?  Maybe I should just keep reading, though... possibly someone has solved this particular mystery...  Then again, I remember reading somewhere else that the file was created on July 5.  Maybe an error somewhere?

Note:  I felt so bad when I saw this video!  Very early on in the case, around August 1, I discovered a possible connection to this Derrick Williams at Sawgrass Apartments and contacted someone from Websleuths to post what I was looking into. 

(I was not and am not a member of WS; I had lurked there during the Melanie McGuire case, so when the Caylee case broke, I returned there to stay abreast of the developments.  I tried to join so I could post what I'd found, but when they turned me down due to my email addy, I decided to try to contact a Websleuth member via email by googling her name.  It worked, and I used my myspace account -- which I had created for the sole purpose of being able to view the myspace pages of the players in the Caylee case -- for communications.  It snowballed, and I ended up creating my own myspace blog-type site on the Caylee case, which developed quite a healthy following until Cindy had it deleted in November by threatening myspace.)

What video is the man walking into the house?  Do you have a link or did I miss it?  Those front shots of Casey on youtube are something.  Her face has really filled out and she is looking much older now.

A1, that begs the questions: did she kill her own pets?  How many pets did she bury there? What species were these pets and why/how did they die?  I could go on.  You don't suppose the defense will use that as the rationale behind her chucking her deceased child into the "woods" do you--you know, after the accidental death? 

I apologize for the term "chucking", but I'm not convinced Caylee was buried (except maybe under pavers that were perhaps were unseated during the flooding rain).

That's what Dr. Perper says on NG.  He says with the duct tape around the mouth/head, this was no accident.  It was intentional and probably happened with the baby was alive.  No way this was an accident.

After decades of moral arguments reaching biblical proportions, after long, twisted journeys to the nation's highest court and back, the death penalty may be abandoned by several states for a reason having nothing to do with right or wrong:

Money.

Turns out, it is cheaper to imprison killers for life than to execute them, according to a series of recent surveys. Tens of millions of dollars cheaper, politicians are learning, during a tumbling recession when nearly every state faces job cuts and massive deficits.

So an increasing number of them are considering abolishing capital punishment in favor of life imprisonment, not on principle but out of financial necessity.

"It's 10 times more expensive to kill them than to keep them alive," though most Americans believe the opposite, said Donald McCartin, a former California jurist known as "The Hanging Judge of Orange County" for sending nine men to death row.

Deep into retirement, he lost his faith in an eye for an eye and now speaks against it. What changed a mind so set on the ultimate punishment?

California's legendarily slow appeals system, which produces an average wait of nearly 20 years from conviction to fatal injection — the longest in the nation. Of the nine convicted killers McCartin sent to death row, only one has died. Not by execution, but from a heart attack in custody.

"Every one of my cases is bogged up in the appellate system," said McCartin, who retired in 1993 after 15 years on the bench.

"It's a waste of time and money," said the 82-year-old, self-described right-wing Republican whose sonorous voice still commands attention. "The only thing it does is prolong the agony of the victims' families."

In 2007, time and money were the reasons New Jersey became the first state to ban executions since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine commuted the executions of 10 men to life imprisonment without parole. Legal costs were too great and produced no result, lawmakers said. After spending an estimated $4.2 million for each death sentence, the state had executed no one since 1963. Also, eliminating capital punishment eliminated the risk of executing an innocent person.

Out of 36 remaining states with the death penalty, at least eight have considered legislation this year to end it — Maryland, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, New Hampshire, Washington and Kansas — an uncommon marriage between eastern liberals and western conservatives, built on economic hardship.

"This is the first time in which cost has been the prevalent issue in discussing the death penalty," said Richard Dieter, director of the Death Penalty Information Center, a data clearinghouse that favors abolition of capital punishment.

The most recent arguments against it centered on the ever-increasing number of convicts cleared by DNA evidence.

Some of the worst cases occurred in Illinois. In 2000, then-Gov. George H. Ryan placed a moratorium on executions after 13 people had been exonerated from death row for reasons including genetic testing and recanted testimony. Ryan declared the system "so fraught with error that it has come close to the ultimate nightmare, the state's taking of innocent life."

He commuted the sentences of all 167 death row convicts, most to life imprisonment without parole. His moratorium is still in effect.

Across the country, the number of prisoners exonerated and released from death row is more than 130, with thousands of appeals clogging the courts.

Death penalty trials are more expensive for several reasons: They often require extra lawyers; there are strict experience requirements for attorneys, leading to lengthy appellate waits while capable counsel is sought for the accused; security costs are higher, as well as costs for processing evidence — DNA testing, for example, is far more expensive than simple blood analyses.

After sentencing, prices continue to rise. It costs more to house death row inmates, who are held in segregated sections, in individual cells, with guards delivering everything from daily meals to toilet paper.

In California, home to the nation's biggest death row population at 667, it costs an extra $90,000 per inmate to imprison someone sentenced to death — an additional expense that totals more than $60 million annually, according to a 2008 study by the state's Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice.

The panel, which agreed with California Chief Justice Ronald M. George that the state's death penalty system was "dysfunctional," blamed exorbitant costs on delays in finding qualified public defenders, a severe backlog in appellate reviews, and a high rate of cases being overturned on constitutional grounds.

"Failures in the administration of California's death penalty law create cynicism and disrespect for the rule of law," concluded the 117-page report.

Some prominent Californians have asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to get rid of executions. Especially now, as service cuts and tax increases are pegged to fill a $42 billion budget hole. But it appears that the Republican governor will not abandon capital punishment anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the nationwide number of death sentences handed down has declined over the past decade, from 284 in 1999 to 111 in 2008. Reasons differ significantly, depending on who's providing them: Pro-death penalty activists say it's because crime rates have declined and execution is a strong deterrent; abolitionists say it's because jurors and judges are reluctant to risk taking a life when future scientific tests could prove the accused not guilty.

Executions, too, are dropping. There were 98 in 1999; 37 in 2008.

Still, the costs of capital punishment weigh heavily on legislators facing Solomon-like choices in these dismal economic times.

In Kansas, Republican state Sen. Caroline McGinn is pushing a bill that would repeal the death penalty effective July 1. Kansas, which voted to suspend tax refunds, faces a budget deficit of nearly $200 million. McGinn urged fellow legislators "to think outside the box" for ways to save money. According to a state survey, capital cases were 70 percent more expensive than comparable non-death penalty cases.

In New Mexico, Gov. Bill Richardson recently said his longtime support of capital punishment was wavering — and belt-tightening was one the reasons. As the state tries to plug a $450 million budget shortfall with cuts to schools and environmental agencies, a bill to end executions has already passed the House as a cost-saving measure. The state supreme court has ruled that more money must be given for public defenders in death penalty cases, but legislators have yet to act.

In Maryland, a 2008 Urban Institute study said taxpayers forked out at least $37.2 million for each of five executions since the death penalty was re-enacted in 1978. The survey, which examined 162 capital cases, found that simply seeking the death penalty added $186 million to prosecution costs. Gov. Martin O'Malley, who disdains the death penalty on moral and financial grounds, is pushing a bill to repeal it.

There are many, of course, who refuse to change their minds, believing execution is the ultimate wage of the ultimate sin. They also say that death penalty cases don't have to be so expensive.

Kent Scheidegger, legal director of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation, a pro-capital-punishment group, said, "Having an effective appeals process might very well cost less."

States "calculate the cost as if these people are going to spend their whole lives on death row. We should be revamping the appeals process so that these cases move more quickly," Scheidegger said.

But court systems and their costs vary greatly among states, as does the time it takes to exhaust appeals. It's doubtful that change could come quickly enough to generate savings during this roiling recession.

"It's all about money," said McCartin, the former California judge. "The reasons I changed my mind were between that and how the victims' families just get raped during appeals."

But if convicted killers get life imprisonment instead of death, is that letting them off easy?

Not a chance, says 52-year-old Gordon "Randy" Steidl. He lived on death row and then in the general prison population, after his sentence was commuted to life. He preferred his former accommodations.

Steidl was released in 2004 after being exonerated of the 1986 stabbing deaths of a newlywed couple in Paris, Ill. He had an alibi for the night of the murders, corroborated by others. But he was convicted on eyewitness testimony provided by the town drunk and the town drug addict. Both later recanted.

The state of Illinois spent $3.5 million trying to execute him, "only to end up giving me a life sentence," Steidl said. "And then 5 1/2 years after that, I was exonerated."

He spent 12 years in a tiny cell on death row. Then he was thrown into "gen pop," with its snarling mass of an open cellblock, where the prospect of being stabbed, raped or worse loomed constantly, alongside deafening noise and psychotic cell mates.

"If you really want to kill someone, give them life without parole," Steidl said in an even voice. He speaks of his troubled past as if it was trapped under glass or locked behind bars — visible but no longer able to torture him.

"It's worse than dying."

Katie we all get what your saying I think.  I'd like to hear more about the pet deaths though.  I have had pets all my life.  When I was young, my father/parents were always w/me when we lost one of our beloved friends. 

Truthfully, I know next to nothing about the pet burial scenario.  I remember hearing about this some time ago, but I wasn't clear what pets of "hers" were buried in that overgrown place or which were her friends pets.

My hope is that greater minds than mine in LE have already sufficiently explored that part of the story, for as Always mentioned if she were responsible for the death of her pets, that'd indeed explain alot--and a huge red flag that may have been overlooked early on.

ICBW, but I believe the "CINDYMANT" username belongs to the laptop that used to be Cindy's, from Gentiva where she works.  But this laptop IIRC is the one that Casey was using as her own, carrying around with her, the one that had the blue screen of death according to Lee when he went to fetch her things at Tony's after midnight 7/15-16...

The Anthonys' home PC was an HP (the laptop is a Compaq) and the username on the Anthonys' HP is "Bobby" something.

Hi KatieKatie....I know what you mean.  And the others talking about the pet deaths.  This would be a signficant factor if she was the one killing these pets.  It's typical for killers to start with animals, either maiming them or torturing them and killing them before they move to humans.  The way Kio talked on the National Enq video of them burying there pets there I just wondered how many pets did they have to bury.
