March Madness 2009: Picks Bracket Considerations
Submitted by Don Shapiro on Sun, 03/15/2009 - 10:12.

Heading into March, the folks at BetUS.com offered odds on each of the teams likely to win the NCAA Championship this year.  These early observations - along with recent events - could help with  your March Madness 2009 picks bracket, whether it's for the office pool, the BetUS.com $1 Million Contest or to simply help with one's own betting.

Some important historic trends to keep in mind:

In the last 20 years, No. 1 seeds have won 70% of the NCAA tournament. No. 2 seeds have won the title 10% of the time - Duke won as a No. 2 seed in 1991 and Kentucky won as a No. 2 in 1998.

Interestingly, No. 3 seeds have actually won 15% of the last 20 NCAA tournaments. Michigan was a No. 3 in 1989; Syracuse was a No. 3 in 2003; and Florida was a No. 3 in 2006.

Add it all up, and 95% of the last 20 tournaments have been won by one, two, or three-seeds.

Hear are some teams that are not necessarily going to be among the top seeds to examine closely for your March Madness 2009 picks bracket:

Florida State - registering wins over the likes of Florida, Miami, California, Cincinnati, Maryland and Clemson, and more recently, North Carolina.

Charles Jay of BetUS.com:

"They've relied on glove-like defense (39% FG's allowed) rather than offensive explosiveness. The only double-digit scorer is Toney Douglas (20.3 ppg) but there are four others who are tallying between 7.9 and nine points per contest. FSU has size, with an effective pair of forwards and a freshman center (Solomon Alabi) who is turning into something of an intimidator, with two blocks and 5.6 rebounds in just 21 minutes game. Florida State is 15-7-1 ATS this season, so they are used to performing above expectations, and they have taken on the personality of their coach, Leonard Hamilton, which is that they exhibit mental toughness. Because they take their defense wherever they go, they are going to be a tough "out" in the tournament."

Florida State had odds of winning the tournament set at +20000 coming into March.  That would mean at payout of $20,000 for every $100 bet at BetUS.com if you happened to get that number early in the month.

Michigan - It was not set in stone heading into March that Michigan would make the tournament.  Today, it appears they have a good shot.  They are likely to be around a tenth seeded team and are capable of the upset.

"The Wolverines have gone though incredible peaks and valleys this season, and they are not a team that is going to overwhelm anyone with size, but when they can execute their up-tempo offense unencumbered, they are trouble for just about anyone," Jay said last week.  "Look, this is team that was good enough and gutsy enough to go into Pauley Pavilion and beat UCLA; they were routed by Duke, then came back and scored a win in the rematch. They went up to Connecticut and gave the Huskies life and death until the very end. There have been solid conference wins against Illinois, Minnesota and just recently Purdue, all of whom have seen time in the Top 25 this year. Yes, Michigan can pull some upsets in the tourney."

Michigan was listed last week with odds that would pay $15,000 for every $100 bet if they were to somehow win the tournament.

Purdue - "The Boilermakers were ranked highly at the start of the season, and were probably expected to ultimately go farther at that point then they are now. They've slid in the rankings, where they are #19 in the AP and #20 in the coaches' poll. Regardless of how they do in the Big Ten tournament, Purdue will be in the NCAA field. Last year they came out of nowhere to be a major player in the Big Ten, and had a lot of young kids who played with wisdom far beyond their years. They have balance, and the versatile Robbie Hummel is getting healthier. Plus, this team has the one guy they can count on as a defensive stopper - guard Chris Kramer, the unquestioned blood-and-guts leader of this team who can play lockdown against some of the best (just ask Stephen Curry, who shot 5 for 26 against him)."

They were listed with +4000 odds to win the NCAA Tournament outright.

Jay also offered an interesting observation about California, with odds that would pay $15,000 on every $100 bet at BetUS.com

"What makes this team special is that if the Bears go through a hot stretch, they are capable of beating ANYBODY on any given night," he said.

California was expected to come in around a number nine seed.

I posted this in the Caylee thread, but you know you are spending too much time on Scared Monkeys when your husband is screaming at the basketball game for going into what he calls "O/T"...and  you in return say "Off topic!!!??  Oh Klaas will get them for sure!"

You get a funny look from the husband with that one.

Another convertee to Memphis! ::MonkeyDance::

I picked them to win it all last year, and I came close to being right.... ::MonkeyLaugh::

I am not sure about Pittsburg Kiwi, because I haven't seen them play. But the rest of your picks are the same as mine.

It could be Louisville and Memphis.....winner takes all.

oh Kiwi I've been working long hours this week, I'm wavering on my fourth pick and thought I'd decided on CONN and then I just heard Calhoun is enroute to the hospital? I may just go with Duke instead?

So make mine UNC/Memphis/Louisville/Duke. I may get burned though  ::MonkeyHaHa::

I've got concerns about UNC now for Ty Lawson's toe still seems to be creating some issues? Son plays every football season with serious turf toe, he even had to do the Nike camp with a high ankle sprain he got in the basketball tourney a week prior? Have to wonder about Lawson......

Please keep my recliner warm in the dawghouse  ::MonkeyWink::

Well after hearing all of the hoopla around Coach K's comments in response to the media questioning him about Obama's picks.........I'm glad I picked Duke !

UCONN is what I meant to post earlier, just very tunneled in with work today, only seconds break at a time.

Calhoun is in the hospital overnight for tests?

Well...I guess I could be offended.....talk about March Madness ::MonkeyTongue::
You didn't see me?
I'm there, watching my AU Tigers play in the Not Invited Tournament. They beat Tulsa, and they will go to the semi-finals. Big Whoop....

Maybe the Memphis TIGERS will have a good run.

PDH there is always next year, right?  ::MonkeyWink::

Memphis is a contender for sure ! Pittsburgh nearly lost though, what's up with that?

WFU was knocked off last night, a real shame so I hope they can improve by next season too

I think Memphis wants a chance to prove they can win the Big One. They seem very driven.
I'm definitely stickin' with them. They are on fire. I love the way they play.

I'm still mad that AU didn't get a bid. They're playing better than a lot of the teams I've seen this weekend..... ::MonkeyWaa::

Sweet 16. Here we go.....

Title: Re: MARCH MADNESS BRACKETS
Post by: nonesuche on March 22, 2009, 11:56:58 AM
I agree about Memphis PDH, this might be their year, particularly since it took every tool UNC had to win yesterday.

But Duke has held on and make the Sweet 16, I don't think they can upset Memphis or UNC but I do think Obama really spurred on Coach K and his team. I don't know how many know that Duke is referred to as the "harvard of the south" which may be why Obama dissed them but he may regret that soon. He made the K pretty mad  ::MonkeyHaHa::

Where is Keepthefaith. His boyz are doing pretty well, they play again this afternoon for their berth in the 16 so I'm pulling for you KTF !

pdh - how is this?  ::MonkeyDance:: ::MonkeyDance::

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and owlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth, boil and bubble.
Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

I think you maybe accidently misdirected it to AU's Nell's Belles, who got their behinds handed to them tonight by Rutgers.... They were awful for some unknown reason....like a superior opponent, maybe! The girls just never jelled tonight. I think maybe it was either nerves or exhaustion, but Rutgers dominated AU in every way possible. ::MonkeyEek::
Congrats to Rutgers! They were awesome!!!

Well here we are with the Sweet Sixteen list. So this is who is left.  Louisville, AZ, Kansas, Mich St., Connecticut, Purdue, Missouri, Memphis, Pittsburgh, Xavier, Villanova, Duke, North Carolina, Gonzaga, Syracuse, Oklahoma. Next games are on the 27th! Hey the Dawg House was pretty quiet this year. Except for some of the regulars. There is still time for other SM to give us their pick for the Final Four. Just a reminder try to pick from the list above. You will have a better chance! ::MonkeyWink::

Kiwi - I looked over the odds for the brackets this morning......interesting to say the least for the odds for some teams have certainly risen in the last week.

I'd like to revise my picks but I need to post it back later, still pondering.........I'll post mine by early evening.

UCONN is under investigation by the NCAA for possible recruiting violations, not a good distraction for this team although it appears a super booster's actions may have created this issue.

I think I want to change my predictions to UNC, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma, and Memphis.

Absolutely no knowledge so I'll go with my Big 12:  Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas and I'll throw in Memphis because I've heard more about them then others.

Better than picking based on mascots and school colors right?  ::MonkeyConfused::

I know, I know, I had a hard time typing it !! Pooburgh but once again, they won tonight?

Missouri is leading over Memphis with a little under 20 mins to go..........Oklahoma actually is ranked higher than Memphis and Kansas was ranked equal to Memphis! So you may turn out ok.

I'm watching Missouri/Memphis and Vill/Duke right now! First one appears to be close to a runaway win now and the second is neck to neck.

Boy, I am so far out in the "family and friends" bracket pool I need Pitt to win it all just to place in the middle of a 36 person pool.  I guess that is what I get for being too busy to watch even one regular season game this year.  I came back from my two weeks in Mexico and filled out the bracket without having seen any news for at least 3 weeks.

It was nice to be out of touch with the world for a while, but it shows now.   ::MonkeyHaHa::

GO welcome back.

Watching Duke vs Gonzaga and boy, if UNC can keep up the shooting percentage up I think they will win this one. Ty Lawson looks on fire. 12 minutes into the first half UNC hasn't committed a turnover yet, that may be a deciding factor too.

Louisville was just unstoppable for Arizona. Oklahoma sailed thru as well.

I won't get to watch tomorrow either, because her Senior Prom is tomorrow night and it will take me ALL DAY to get her ready and have photos made. Good Grief! ::MonkeyLaugh::

Memphis surprised me by losing, but that's what makes March Madness so great. You just never know.  ::MonkeyEek::

Louisville looks like the one to beat, along with UNC. Go Tar Heels! ::MonkeyDance::

oh PDH a prom is much more important, I want to see photos !! I bet she will be lovely and I'll just pray it's the best prom ever for her and for you !!  ::MonkeyWink::

I thought Memphis could take it all too and I expected the challenges from teams like Syracuse to be greater - also even watching the game you would not have thought that Michigan would win over Kansas for it was a real back-and-forth. So many teams seemed to fold in the second half too, really surprising?

Bean, I went up the hill to meet friends at a brewery with a sports bar, great food but boy, the people watching during the game was hysterical. Do you know the loudest fan there looked like a petite barbie but with dark hair, she was standing in her bar stool at the end yelling "it's a charge, you cheats, it's a charge". Needless to say she was pulling for Pooburg  ::MonkeyHaHa::

Well I'm down to two picks now, UCONN made it through and I really didn't think that they would, but then I also didn't think Gonzaga would pull it off either.

Remind me never to make you mad enough to put a mojo hex on me  ::MonkeyHaHa::

I never saw that one coming at all. I haven't ever ,in my enire life, watched MI State play basketball, so they were never on my radar as being any good. Congratulations to them for the big win! ::MonkeyDance::

OU is getting rocked by UNC, so the outcome of that game is probably not a big mystery.

Don't you just love the surprises of March Madness? ::MonkeyLaugh::

Yep it's been full of surprises hasn't it? Three minutes left but OK has narrowed the lead to 12 pts now, oops now it's 14......UNC just scored again.

Have you seen this, I busted.......

Well were on to the Final Four- MSU, UConn, NC and Villanova. Pdh- Interesting stat- MSU's coach Tom Izzo has been their couch for 25years I believe. During that time every senior has been to a Final Four. Very good for recruiting.

OK here's the actual stat- No program has gone to more Final Fours since 1999. 5- In a 11 year period. He's been coaching for 25 years, just not all at MSU. Still, every senior has been to a Final Four since 1999. Too bad he's not the Michigan coach. ::MonkeyWink::

I'm picking UNC and.....somebody..... ::MonkeyLaugh::

Thanks for the info on MSU Kiwi.  We don't hear anything about MSU down here, because it's been all about Florida and Memphis for the last few years. And this year my AU Tigers had a little run, so I was busy watching both mens and womens BB. I don't know that I would've picked Villanova either, because I haven't seen them play, until this weekend. They looked really good.
That's what makes the tournament so interesting, though. I was sure either Memphis or Louisville would be in the Final 4, because both teams are fantastic, but they've been home for a while. BB is harder to assess than football, IMHO.  ::MonkeyConfused::

thank god kentucky went after caliparti (however you spell it..lol)
i was afraid they would go after our coach pelphrey since he was born in kentucky, played for kentucky and coached under donovan....even rick pitino recommended him or travis ford!!!! we have only had him 2 years, and this past year wasn't so great but i still think he is going to do some great things for the program. i really like his attitude.
kind of feel sorry for gillespie tho...2 years is not enough time for any coach! i don't care if you are the all almighty big blue...lol

Bean saving your mojo for football season  ::MonkeyHaHa:: too funny

cuz, that disc jockey pales in comparison to the bonfires on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill last night, they had 12 !!!!!!!! Tradition is to jump over them and I still remember doing a road trip there when I was in college to see friends, and one of the fraternities was nearly shut down for building a bonfire in their backyard post a win over Duke and leaping over it nekkie !!  ::MonkeyShocked:: ::MonkeyHaHa:: Yes I was there and I didn't cover my eyes either  ::MonkeyHaHa::

shades of guys streaking.........oh that dates me  ::MonkeyHaHa::

I was touched by some of Coach Roy's press conference post the game, he referenced how hard it was to anticipate how to deal with Hansbrough's and Lawson's injuries this season, knowing they had forfeited going pro to make this season and championship win happen. He was choked up when speaking about Hansbrough for some many seem to 'hate' on him, I never have understood why so many dislike him so maybe I'm just missing the point.

Oh well, now on to baseball right?  ::MonkeyWink::
