Oh my Monken. You never cease to amaze me! My son in involved in a guitar project at college. I will be sure he sees this one too. I hope you don't mind, but I have made a folder and have put all your cakes in there to peruse. I love you colorful decorating too.

Off topic, but you have had your share of bad weather too. I think I know the approximate area where you live. I have relatives that live in the same area. Stay safe, and hope it wasn't too bad for you last night.

I find it so amazing what you do, I don't want you to give away your trade secrets, but how do you get  all the shapes and sizes for all your cakes? I'm guessing you make a big sheet cake and then cut the shapes, you better get paid very well for your cakes, because you sure deserve to. ::MonkeyDance::

Fannie Mae, you have a folder!!! That is the nicest thing ever!! I'm gonna post some more soon, I have 2 books filled with pictures but alot of them aren't on my computer.  ::MonkeyRoll::
We have had alot of bad weather it seems, Ms & Al have been raked this year! We drove home in a severe thunderstorm yesterday afternoon, I thought we were never gonna get home! It was raining so hard you couldn't see the road at all!! My Hubby was driving, well, he was stearing!  ::MonkeyTongue:: Anyways I have family near Trimm, so i always know what the weather is doing up there! Is that where you are? You probably already know but I'm in east-central Ms. I'm terrified of bad weather so The Weather Channel is a regular in our home!  ::MonkeyEek::  ::MonkeyTongue::
Now when I watch the weather I keep all my monkey friends in mind! Hope your son likes my cake, Hugs, Monken  ::MonkeyWink::

::MonkeyWink:: Really it's not hard, I just draw the shape on newsprint & then use that for my cutting guide. I have all different pan sizes so i can usually put something together the right size. See, you guessed right! And, no my hubby never thinks I charge enough for my cakes & I really don't but I'm so grateful to my customers & all!  ::MonkeyRoll::

My favorite is the butterfly cake, but your candyland cake comes in a close second!

I can barely put sprinkles on cupcakes straight let alone paint with frosting!

Monken!! You just blow me away everytime you post your cakes. Girl! You are amazing!!!!

On another note, I made my prized butternut pound cake today, and I am almost out of butternut extract. I used to get the best at Watkins, but they don't sell it any more. I buy McCormicks brand now when I can find it, but it is not as full of flavor as the Watkins. Do you have any idea where I might be able to order some??? TIA

Happy Mothers Day.

Sure Cookie, I will give it to you. I am already in bed tonight and about to go to sleep. I will post it for you and tell you where I put it. I will look at the Pampered Chef too. That is the only problem with making the cake is finding to extract.  See you in the morning. Happy Mother's Day.

Thank you Cookie. I haven't gotten Monken's permission but I am going to post the pound cake recipe on this site. Maybe she can help us find the butternut extract. If she wants the recipe moved from here I will ask Klaas to put it in an appropriate thread.

Miss Katie's Butternut Pound Cake (May she rest in peace. ::MonkeyAngel:: )

2 sticks of butter, softened
1/2 cup of Crisco
3 cups of sugar
2 Tbsps of butternut Extract (yes, tablespoons)

Cream above ingredients together

Add 5 whole eggs, one at the time, blending well.(I've used both large and medium, doesn't matter.)

In another bowl combine:
3 cups of regular flour. I usually measure first, then sift  with 1/4 Tsp salt.

Measure:
I small can evaporated milk with enough water to make a cup.

Alternately add small amounts of flour  and milk, blend well. Scrape bowl frequently.

Grease and flour a tube (angel food cake type that is two piece) pan. After putting batter in pan, pick up pan and drop against the counter a few times to remove bubbles in batter. I usually put the tube pan on a cookie sheet as occasionally it may leak a little. Place in a cold oven. Turn oven to 325 degrees for 1 hour and 45 mins. Take out and cool on a rack for 15 mins. Turn out of pan, and finish cooling. I like the crusty top so I cool it with that side up. Enjoy!!

Here's hoping we can find a good source for good butternut extract. McCormicks will do but the flavor is not as full.

Monken, I hope you don't mind me putting this here. If you do I understand. I will move it. Just let me know.
Edit to fix angel

Here is a link to Spice Barn and they list a vanilla, butter & nut extract, don't know if that is the same thing, but here goes:

Are you still here? I was looking and I think this source may probably the best. The one from the Spice Barn looks clear. The one form here says that it makes the cake yellow, and that 's the one you want. I sometimes can find McCormick Vanilla butter nut and it is satifactory, but I find I tend to add a little bit more than two TBSP to make it a little more flavorful. This brand on this link says its the old fashion kind. I think I will order some. Good cookin'! Let me know how it turns out. Please say a prayer for my good friend Miss Kitty that gave me this recipe. She is gone now, and I miss her very much. She was one of the best, spunkiest ladies I ever knew.

Tracygirl, you are so sweet! Ace of cakes would kick me out!  ::MonkeyTongue:: And once my granddaughter is old enough to start school(she'll be 4 in Sept.) I'm gonna think about that bakery. I can barely keep up(I had an order on my answering machine when we got home last night) I had 3 to do last week & It's very time consuming, about 5 hours per cake from start to finish! The inside is also colored to match the outside, & people LOVE that!  ::MonkeyTongue::

Fanny, bless your heart!!  ::MonkeyRoll:: I searched for that extract & I found Lorann butternut on ebay, It's not expensive at all(I'll post the link) Is this the one you use? They have a million different flavors!!  They are supposed to be super flavored so they come in very small amounts! let me know what you think! I'm ordering some so i can make your cake!  ::MonkeyTongue:: I also order from www.pattycakes.com & they have it too, but their shipping rates are high. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? I buy McCormicks brand now when I can find it, but it is not as full of flavor as the Watkins. Do you have any idea where I might be able to order some??? TIA

Happy Mothers Day.

Thanks Bearly, that is where I used to get it. For  some reason they don't carry the butternut extract anymore. I am heartbroken. I am going to try a few of the ones that Monken and Cookie suggested. I'll try them and see how they turn out, and I will let everybody know.

Fanny, I looked in a pampered chef catalog and also online for tastefully simple and I did not see the butternut spice that you are looking for...

No, no, leave it here, Fanny, & I'm checking on the extract too! I'll let you know if i find a good source!

Check out the Watlkins products.  I have butter pecan, carmel and a load of others.

Just a comment on the pan.  I have a Tube pan, that I use 'strictly' for angel food cakes.

You do not grease for Angel Food Cakes, so just a word of warning, if you are making the above cake, either get another pan, cause once you grease this pan, you will not be able to use it for Angel food cakes anymore.

You can use a pan like that for Chiffon cakes, and I do believe that type of pan is a greased one.

Just a bit of info, don't want anyone to have problems, with the pans.

Thanks for that recipe, I have copied it and plan to get myself a new pan and try it out.

Thanks Muffy, I haven't got to talk to her about the wedding yet, the inside of this one was navy & gold. They are huge Notre Dame fans. They decided at the last minute on a theme & I ordered the table cover, plates etc. for them. The table cover just happened to come in the day before, boy that's cuttin it close!  ::MonkeyEek::  The wedding was an hour & a half from here so I hope the cake survived the trip okay! We'll see! Hey everyone, Thank you so much!!  ::MonkeyWink::

Bluemoon, it takes a really long time, I am not fast at all! For a 1/2 sheet size like most of these it takes at least 4 hours & then at least 30 mins. to clean up! I bake the cake itself the day before & if it's colored too, that almost doubles the bake time  ::MonkeyEek:: I don't make nearly enough making them (my husband reminds me regularly) but I love doing it so much. I've done all kinds of other art but i love cakes the most.

I just took an order for a "Twilight" cake for a 16 yr old girl. I don't know if anyone watches that show; the main characters-Edward & Bella. Anyway, I have no idea yet what I'm going to do, but I'll come up with something! I also have the guitar cake this weekend too! I'll post pics when I'm done; Love you all!  ::MonkeyRoll::

Hey Green Eyes (mine are green too, by the way)! I didn't color the cake on this one, the outside was so dark & dramatic I just thought it might take away from the design. So the inside is white. My granddaughter says i should have made the cake red like blood  ::MonkeyEek:: I'm doing one today that is pink & purple on the inside though!  ::MonkeyTongue::

Well, I actually like white cake better than chocolate so I get extra pieces!

Wonderful cakes, Monken.  I don't think I have ever seen such personalization on BD cakes before.  We don't have anything like these in my area.

And is it my imagination or are you really making them more and more, busier and more orders?  I can sure see why that would happen.  How long does each one take to make, start to finish?  I think it would take me about a week on each one and the birthday would be over before I was finished with the cake!

::MonkeyCheer3::    Hey Guys! I do love to personalize every cake I make; I put a lot of time into each one. And that's what people love! The cake itself is almost always white & then I color it depending on the color theme, if they want it that way. Sometimes someone will request a different flavor & that's not a problem either. I've done devil's food, red velvet & butter recipe before. I make my icing with powdered sugar, shortening & milk & it is wonderful! It doesn't taste like what you buy at Walmart or a grocery store. I usually bake the cake a day ahead & decorate the next day. It takes 5 to 6 hours to finish a 1/2 sheet size from baking, decorating & clean-up. And yes, I'm getting more & more orders! I don't advertise at all, it's all word of mouth & referrals. i already have orders for sept. & oct! The oct. cake is a birthday but a halloween theme! I've never done a halloween one before & I can't wait   ::cartwheel::  There's a million things you can do for halloween. it may end up being a haunted house scene!! Thank you all for your support & encouragement; i love all of you monkeys!!   ::MonkeyWink::

The characters in your latest creation look so happy and like they're having fun, Monken.  ::MonkeyDance::  The bright colors are great  ::MonkeyCheer3::

I couldn't agree more!

I wonder whose child I can babysit so I can sit and watch that show.  Hmmm....

WOW!!  Monken you are so talented.  I am so envious.  I can hardly draw a straight line with a pencil and ruler.   ::MonkeyDevil2::

I wish you lived closer so I could hire you.  I just do the carvel ice cream cakes and if you bring a picture they reproduce it and  put that on the cake.  They are nice but nothing like yours.  ::MonkeyTongue::
You sound like me  ::MonkeyDevil::  The cake is beautiful just like all your cakes. I would sure buy one of your cakes for a special occasion if I lived close to you  ::MonkeyCool::

 :smt045 :smt045 :smt045

Heck, I would be inventing special occasions and just popping in to visit Monken to see what's baking.

This is beautiful.  I don't know why but this picture made me cry.

Maybe because I just came from the Caylee thread, I can also hear little children playing in the background, and my son and I are going to dinner tonight before we stop in to see my parents.  I just went from the world of bazaar to the wold of happy homes in a click.

Hey everyone!! Here's two cakes I've done in the last week! They were thrilled with the tie dye cake; not my choice of colors but it was for a 13 yr. old boy! And if you remember, several months ago this same boy was going through treatment for a malignant tumor in his leg

Hey,Bearly! I just printed a picture of it, cut it out so i could use the circle as a guide & then all the rest I used a toothpick & then just by eye. Logos always take forever, because I want them to be perfect; but I never know when to stop & leave it alone. My hubby kept telling me "it looks great leave it alone, they're gonna look at it for a second & then cut right into it " but I ended up spending waaaay too much time on it!! I'm glad I was finally satisfied with it!!!   ::MonkeyTongue::

Oh!! I do love the rainbow cake!   ::MonkeyDance::  I can see why you added it to your cake book.  I'm really a big fan of yours.  I bake bread, rolls, corn bread, bread sticks and such, but about the only cake I ever bake is a bundt cake, because it's so easy.  I put it on a pretty plate, maybe  put a few  leaves or flowers at the base, drizzle the frosting on top/down sides and it's ready to go.  I enjoy your cakes so much.  When someone gets a get you've decorated, I think  it's  special because it's just for them.  Thank you for sharing.  It's a really nice break for me, and I look forward to seeing  what you've created next.   ::MonkeySlide::

See that first picture she printed with the chomping teeth?  Now I know why Muffy is always here first, she waits till Monken bakes the cake, then......................

 ::MonkeyJnBox::

She takes a little piece out of the corner and gulps it down before we get here.  The criminal always returns to the scene of the crime.

 :smt045

Check it out, little bee size bites on every cake.

Monken.....the orange slice cake turned out really good...everyone really liked it...
I think that you should go into business too with your cakes...do you remember reading about a woman who was going to lose her home through foreclosure I think it was and she started making and selling her cakes from her kitchen....applesauce cakes? anyways, she not only saved herself from losing her home, but she turned it into a really successful business...You could do the same! I was tempted to order one of her cakes and I still may do that if I can find the article on her again...I would order one of your cakes and have it shipped to me! you should check into it..She started out just making and selling them to family and friends and word spread!

Hey Cookie, I'm so glad the orange slice cake was a hit!
Was the woman you're talking about on Oprah? I don't usually watch Oprah but I do remember seeing something like that on her show. And sometimes there are stories like that in the Parade that comes in the Sunday paper. Anyway, it sounds like a great idea, I just have to figure out how to ship mine frozen & keep them that way while shipped. Klaas memtioned freezing them, too. The only problem is the cost to ship that way & the cake would have to be in some kind of styrofoam container. I'm going to try to ship one to a relative first to see how it turns out!! Thank you so much, Cookie!!! Love You!!!  ::MonkeyKiss::

Oh, & before i forget, I am going to attempt to make my own fondant. I have had so many people ask me about making fondant cakes but the pre-made fondant that you can buy tastes horrible!! i made a birthday cake before for my daughter using that fondant & it was awful! So the only way i will do it is if I make my own. I read an article the other day that stated the same thing about packaged fondant but it said if you make your own it is great! So that's what I'm going to try to do. i already have the recipe & it's not hard at all. Wish me luck; I don't know when I'll do it but it will be soon! Love you all!!  ::MonkeyKiss::

I wonder if you could find the answer online and not have to reinvent the wheel.  Long ago, my friend used to mail packages to her daughter across the country--her husband was in the armed forces.  She mailed a cake for her b-day and it always arrived perfectly.

Good thing bees don't eat much.  Bears do!  I am just afraid I am going to take a bite (a petite one, I am a lady bear after all  :queen:), and get stung!  :smt119

Maybe you better mark the spot where you are so we don't (accidentally of course), eat the piece that you are chomping away on.  Maybe like this:

Thank you everyone!!  ::MonkeyKiss:: I made fondant today & it was not hard at all, just time-consuming. That's why fondant cakes cost so much more! I'm going to experiment with coloring it & then decorate a cake. I'll post the results when it's done. Not sure how soon that'll be though. My next cake order is Dora & Boots. It'll be so cute!! The cake for 2 is a good idea.  My husband doesn't like cake or pastries, so I guess I could eat both pieces ::MonkeyDevil::  Monken's cakes are really an art form and it would be hard for me to cut into one.  I suppose I would overcome that eventually   :smt106  I haven't had cake since about mid December, so I might just feed my need and have a slice of cake next time I'm out in a restaurant or bakery.  Dessert first!!

I love desserts..hubs does not eat sweets until the middle of the night..! he gets up every night from bed to eat whatever he gets his hands on...otherwise he wants no part of sweets....I can eat them anytime but  I never get out of bed in the middle of the night to eat, ever!

Don't be distracted by the bee, she will eat the cake Monken sets out while you have your guard down!  She eats the icing first, don't let her fool you into thinking she is a tiny bee and won't eat much.  That is one mighty good appetite for a little bee!  Now remember, don't turn your back on her.

Hey Guys, I made a Spring cake yesterday for a little girl, it's beautiful! I'll post the picture soon. I have 5 cakes due next week  ::MonkeyShocked:: I'm going to be working my arse off!  ::MonkeyTongue:: I'll be doing one for my daughter & combining the traditional icing with fondant. I think I see little flying insect tongue prints in that bowling cake.  I wonder how that happened?

Thanks everyone!!  ::MonkeyKiss::
The fondant bow is pieced together. You cut strips 3 sizes, fold over & lay each one sideways so the loop doesn't fall on itself & let dry. Once the fondant is dry, it's surprisingly tough. You still have to be careful but it dries stiff so you can handle it, although it does crack easily(I made extra loops!) Then you start laying the loops & stacking using icing as glue. Once the icing dries it holds together well. The fondant strip around the bottom, I used a detail brush to paint Happy Birthday with gel color & then placed around the cake. Much easier than trying to paint it on the cake! Thank so for being interested, Love you all!!  ::MonkeyKiss::  ::MonkeyWink::

I wish I could meet you too, Bearly, i think about meeting you guys all the time! Sometimes it's frustrating having friends you can't see, ya know :} I still need to come up with a way to ship cakes safely!
I have a "My Little Pony" cake coming up, it's going to be really cute. Thanks everyone for your comments, Love you all!!

The cakes are beautiful.  Best of all, I beat the bee and got to look at them before she put her footprints in them.  Now, maybe if I just take a little taste off the end before the bee gets here and catches me!

Heh heh Bearly...How do you know I wasn't already here?  Bees can hover you know?

The cakes are so lovely, Monken.

Hey Everybody! I have 3 more here, July is going to be  full month; I 've got 3 more next week & one will be mostly fondant! Can't wait to see how it turns out. It is an ice cream sundae party & the cake will have a 3D(cake & fondant) sundae on top. I'm a little scared but i think i can do it. Enjoy, Love you all!

Lovely cakes Monken!!  Eli's western cake is cool!  The  red paisley scarf if amazing!!!  I really like the bright happy colors in the Little Pony cake and the detailing on the flowers is neat!  Blake's birthday cake has the dump truck and the airplane actually smiling.  :--)  Nice work, Monken!

Thank you Guys! I love the paisley scarf too! It took a little while to do. My husband is a little miffed at me for not charging more because it takes me so long to do them(avg. time is 4 hrs. just to decorate the outside) but I have a hard time raising my prices esp. with longtime customers. I charge 45.00 for a 1/2 sheet size regardless of how long it takes me on the design, & that price has been the same for several years. I guess I need to start charging depending on design, i don't know? Fondant is a different story though! Verrrry time-consuming! :)

Monken...your cakes are gorgeous and your hubby is right ..you don't charge enough. My niece does cakes and the fondant is really expensive .Around here it is $20.00 for 5 lbs. Ashley gets $350.00 for a wedding cake. And hers are cheap compared to another lady here.

Hey Darla! I didn't know your niece did cakes!!  ::MonkeyWink:: I make my own fondant & it is sooo time consuming, but it's worth it! I haven't done an all fondant cake yet, it's usually buttercream with fondant accents like a big bow or something. But I'm so afraid I'll scare customers away with pricing. I really don't have much to compare to, I use tara's in Hattiesburg & then price way under, but I do spend a whole lot of time on every cake. I'm posting pics today of the denim wedding cakes I did. There were two the same size (two-tiered) with silver fondant bows. i charged her 225.00 for both. She said that was way under anyone else's price, but i don't know what those prices were. I've charged 45.00 for a half sheet cake for years regardless of design. Maybe I should go up 5.00 or so? Anyways thank you Darla!!  ::MonkeyKiss::

Now i have another baby sesame street and another four wheeler cake! Customers now will look through my cake books & pick out what they want, sometimes. I don't really like to do the same cake twice but I changed them up a little! Also the owl cake was for my daughter's bday, she loves 70's owls and the last one is a Nicki Minaj a rapper!  ::MonkeyCool::

I do not know how I missed this thread, but you are very talented Monken.  Love them all.

I watch those cake shows on TV all the time like Cake Boss, and I wish I had an ounce of your talent.

For my son's bday last year, he wanted like a military cake with guns and army dudes.  Local bakery did not even have little army dudes, I had to have hubby go to walmart and pick some up and bring them to the bakery.  It came out okay, but not as great as your cakes look.
