Carnut,

Just seeing this, and it seems the product is no longer available....got a message it can't be found.

Can you give some details on make, model, operating system, etc.?  Son was talking about purchasing one, eventually.

Thanks.

Looks like that deal was too good to last.

The best advice I have for buying a laptop is to buy the cheapest one you can find. All laptops can do anything anyone needs to do nowadays.

Here's the current online good deal from WalMart:

Laptop deal from Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4948023)

It's a Toshiba and seems to have everything I would want in a laptop.

I currently have a Toshiba laptop that I bought refurbished and so far it is doing well.

Now ya do know on Black Friday there will be laptops available in the $200/$300 range if you are lucky enough to be first in line to get one.

Also between now and Christmas there will be sale deals in the $400/$500 range, all of which will be worth getting if you can get one.

Don't you find the Celeron processors extremely SLOW??

Ah, no, I really don't think any modern processor is SLOW, especially compared to what I have used in the past.

Now adays I think speed is determined by amount of memory and access speed of a harddrive. If not enough memory is available then WinXP starts
paging to disk and that slows things down, also when loading programs or loading files to and from harddisks the access speed of the harddrives shows itself.

But compared to computers of a couple years ago, nothing is SLOW.

Found a similar laptop at Best Buy for $449.  Compaq Presario 420 with an Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB DDR memory and 80 GB hard drive.  WiFi ready and capable of MS Vista upgrade.

Probably is sufficient for most household uses, and teenager uses.  Sold out online, but was available in store when I checked.
