Lone posted about Almer Gomes being a long time resident of tracy and hanging out with Bacchetti.  I asked her to copy that info over here

so these gomes' are just across from CLL's and melissa.  she might have known them, and almer of this same gomes family is good friends with bacchetti at the place they always met at.  so do these other gomes(across the street from melissa) in the same family with almer, also know bacchetti or go out to the bacchetti dairy?  could this be how melissa knows about the bacchetti dairy?

James Gomes graduated from Los Banos High School and served as student body president. He graduated from Fresno State in 1963 with a degree in dairy science.

James began his dairy career at Producers Dairy as a student. After graduation he accepted the position of plant manager and developed the organization and quality programs that established the foundation for their current successful dairy business.

Throughput his career he has worked for several companies, including Foremost Dairies Inc., Knudsen and Leprino Foods. In 1987, he began working with the Danish Creamery Association and served as its president and chief executive officer for 12 years. While at Danish, James helped build the company’s reputation in the dairy producer community and established a “waiting list” of producers hoping to join Danish.  Currently, he serves as executive vice president of operations and senior vice president of marketing and purchasing for California Dairies, a $2 billion United States dairy cooperative, the second largest in the United States. He directs butter sales more than $200 million per year with an emphasis on private label.

James has served on numerous boards, including the California Dairy Research Foundation, and as president of the Lemoore Chamber of Commerce. His current professional associations include the California Creamery Operations Association, Dairy America and chairman of the board for Los Banos Foods Inc.

He has been married for 43 years to Sharlene Bakula Gomes, a Clovis High and Fresno State graduate, who is a current trustee for the Bulldog Foundation and past president and current board member for Fresno State Baseball’s Dugout Club. They have lived in Lemoore for 35 years, and have two children, Keith and Kathy. James enjoys street rodding and just completed his prized truck.

Gilbert Gomes, 85, of Tracy died Sunday at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital.

Mr. Gomes was a native of Lemoore and a lifelong resident of Tracy. He was a dairyman and farmer. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years. He was a volunteer for Tracy Rural and City Fire Department, and was a member of the Westside Pioneers, IPFES and the Oldsmobile Club.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Gomes; children, Gilbert Gomes Jr. of Stockton, Valerie Gomes of Tucson, Ariz., Sharlene Stager of Oracle, Ariz., Dennis Valverde of Collegeville and Guy Valverde of Arnold; brothers, Almer Gomes and John Gomes, both of Tracy; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Valverde; and two brothers.

Visitation from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Fry Memorial Chapel. The rosary will be at 9:30 a.m Friday, followed by a Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's and burial at Tracy Mausoleum.

hmmmm, are the valverde children above in the obit his step-sons?  because they are not named gomes.  ok there it is almer IS his brother, so that is confirmed.  And he is a native of lemoore where the james gomes is who is the dairy guy I posted earlier.

Services will be Friday morning for Gilbert Gomes Sr., 85, a retired Tracy dairyman and community volunteer who died Monday at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital.
A native of Lemoore, Mr. Gomes came to Tracy with his family as an infant. His parents, Ignacio and Marie Gomes, established the family dairy in 1919 at the northwest corner of Tracy Boulevard and Grant Line Road.

After attending Tracy schools, Mr. Gomes operated the dairy with his parents and four brothers until it was closed in 1979. The property was then sold and became a shopping center that once was the location of Kmart, and more recently Van’s Ace Hardware  and other businesses.
Mr. Gomes was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, where he was an usher for many years and a volunteer at fund-raising festivals to build and maintain St. Bernard’s School.
He was also a volunteer for the Tracy Rural Fire District, the Tracy Fire Department and Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. He was a member of the Westside Pioneers, IPFES, Our Lady of Fatima Society and the Oldsmobile Club. At Oldsmobile rallies and in local parades, Mr. Gomes loved to drive his 1953 Oldsmobile 98 Holiday, which he purchased new and carefully maintained over the years.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Dolores Gomes of Tracy; a son, Gilbert Gomes Jr. and his wife Serena of Stockton; two daughters, Valerie Gomes of Tucson, Ariz., and Sharlene Stager and her husband Terry of Oracle, Ariz.; and two sons, Dennis Valverde and his wife Kim of Collegeville and Guy Valverde and his wife Casey of Arnold.
Also surviving are two brothers, Almer Gomes and John Gomes, both of Tracy.
He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Valverde, and two brothers, Enos and Manuel Gomes.
Friday’s services will begin at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave., where a rosary will be recited, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will be in Tracy Mausoleum.
Visitation at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Avenue, will be observed from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday.
The family prefers memorial contributions be sent to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church Building Fund, 163 W. Eaton Ave., Tracy 95376.

okay gilbert was born in lemoore but was an infant in tracy and his parents started the dairy in 1919.. so chances are the james gomes in lemoore could be related but probably not his brother or the james listed with the gilbert family in previous posts. 

so who is james in the previous posts listed with the almer/gilbert family.  Is this the herdsman for the bacchetti/silva dairy. 

we now know that the parents started the dairy in 1919, it sold in 1979.  up until then the family including 4 brothers ran the dairy.  we know almer and gilbert are brothers.. the other 2 brothers are Enos and Manuel.  we need to find out when is Manuel born.  Could he be the manuel gomes who married timothy's mother?

we also know that almer's family lived across the street from meliss and CLL in the MHP, so she could very well know these people.  she could very well have went out to the bacchetti/ silva dairy with them.  This gomes family was good friends with the bacchetti's remember they met at and had lunch with them at the club place thing.  These are all oldtime portuguese dairy families.  They all now one another and they have all been in that area forever.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning for John M. Gomes Sr., 79, a retired longtime Tracy dairyman who died Friday morning at his Tracy home.
Family members said he enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with them Thursday and retired for the evening. He died in his sleep during the night.
A native of Tracy, Mr. Gomes served in the U.S. Army in France and Germany during World War II. After the war, he joined his parents, Ignacio and Marie Gomes, and four brothers in operating the Gomes Dairy at Grant Line Road and Tracy Boulevard. The dairy, started by the family in 1919, was closed in 1979 and the property sold. It later became a shopping center that once was the site of a Kmart store.
Mr. Gomes was a parishioner of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, and he was a member of Knights of Columbus, IPFES, UPEC and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports, gardening and taking daily morning walks.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rosalie Gomes of Tracy; a daughter, Marie Rodrigues and husband Gary Rodrigues of San Ramon; two sons, John Gomes Jr. of Tracy and Danny Gomes and companion Fran Bauer of Tracy; two grandchildren, Matthew Rodrigues of San Ramon and Michelle Gomes of Missoula, Mont.; and a brother, Almer Gomes of Tracy.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Ignacio and Marie Gomes; and three brothers, Enos Gomes, Gilbert Gomes Sr. and Manuel Gomes Sr.
Thursday’s Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. Interment will follow at Tracy Cemetery.
Visitation will be observed from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave., where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. that same day.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning for Mario Silva, 51, a Tracy dairyman who died Saturday at his home following a brief illness.

A native of Conceicao, Faial, Azores, he came to the U.S. with his family in 1959, settling first in Escalon and then moving to Tracy a year later. Mr. Silva attended Banta School and graduated from Tracy High School in 1972.

He was a partner in Silva Bros. Dairy on Grant Line Road and in 1978 became a partner with his father-in-law, Lino Bacchetti, in the Bacchetti & Silva Dairy on Bacchetti Road north of Tracy. Mr. Silva and his wife, Ann, operated the 750-cow dairy.

On April 6, 1997, then Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, on a tour of California, visited the Bacchetti & Silva Dairy. r. Silva showed the prime minister the operations of the dairy equipped with a unique “carousel” milking parlor.

After the tour of the dairy, the prime minister said, “I must say I’m very proud to see some people coming from Portugal operating such modern companies producing in such excellent quality conditions with such efficiency.”

In 2002, the dairy produced an Italian-style semi-soft cheese sold throughout Northern California.

Mr. Silva was a director of the Independent Mutual Water Co., a member of Western United Dairymen, a former chairman of Ag Credit of California and a member of IPFES.

He was a parishioner at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and a member of the St. Bernard’s Capital Building Fund.

He enjoyed traveling and is remembered as a loving son, husband, brother, uncle and a good friend to many.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Ann Bacchetti, of Tracy; his mother, Maria O. Silva of Tracy; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hortense and Carlo Penninella of San Ramon and Connie and Peter O’Hara of Fremont; a brother, Manuel H. Silva of Tracy; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank I. and Mary L. Silva of Tracy; and a sister-in-law, Berni Silva of Tracy.

Also surviving are 13 nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews; and his father- and mother-in-law, Lino and Frances Bacchetti of Tracy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank J. Silva; and a brother, Fernando Silva.

Wednesday’s Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. Interment will be in Tracy Mausoleum.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

Visitation will be observed from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave.

The family prefers memorial contributions in Mr. Silva’s name be sent to the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church Building Fund, 163 W. Eaton Ave., 95376.

Festa bullfights under scrutiny after arrests

A private investigator just last week accused bullfighters of stabbing bulls until they bled during a bullfight in Thornton. Two men were arrested Friday at that northern San Joaquin County bullfight after they also allegedly attacked the investigator who tried to seize some prods from the bullfighters.

Darren Nunes, 23, and Cesar Rocha, 38, were arrested in Thornton on suspicion of assault just weeks before Tracy’s June 19 bullfights. In addition to the local animal control officers, some animal rights investigators say they, too, may crash the event, part of an annual Portuguese religious celebration.

Otherwise, two animal control investigators will inspect the bulls before the fights and two will stay for the rest of the event, said Tracy police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman.

Last year’s bullfights in Tracy were canceled because of financial troubles, according to the host organization, Irmandade Portuguesa da Festa do Espirito Santo. The cancelation also came after police warned organizers to keep an eye out for animal abuse.

It’s illegal in California to make animals bleed for entertainment — bullfights held across California by various organizations this summer are billed as bloodless — and illegal to even have a bullfight unless it’s part of a religious celebration.

In 2007, authorities had showed up to witness the fights after a tipster told them some bullfighters use illegally sharp prods to aggravate the bulls. Sure enough, investigators said they saw at least one bloody bull and warned the organization that if that happened again, they’d ban the fights from the festival.

But the nonprofit organizers denied that the 2007 incident had any bearing on why they canceled the Tracy fights last year.

This year’s organizers declined to comment on the bullfights, preferring instead to talk about the religious festival that’s the main part of the event. The Portuguese festa kicks off with a June 12 dinner and continues into June 13 with a parade, fair and feasting.

Though it’s unclear if some of the same matadors at last week’s Thornton fight will attend the Tracy event this year, many of them travel from fight to fight, according to the Irmandade da Missao, a Portuguese group out of San Jose that helps organize many of the cultural celebrations in Northern California.

About 50 people visited the courtroom Tuesday to support the two men — Rocha and Nunes — during their arraignment. Both pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault charges and were released of their own recognizance.

The investigator from a nonprofit animal rights group called Animal Rights Investigations and who accused the two men of attacking him said that Nunes choked him until he almost lost consciousness. The two men were originally accused of assaulting San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputies and for inciting a riot after the investigator tried to take some sharpened prods allegedly used to stab the bulls during the fight.

THE CELEBRATION OF PENTECOST

The Holy Ghost Feast has been held at Holy Ghost Mission each year at Pentecost for 118 years.  The date changes each year because it falls fifty days after Easter. In 2009 it will take place on May 30-31.  Please see the Parish Calendar page for more details about the work schedule for this important event as we get closer to the date.   We need and welcome all the volunteers who are willing to help to prepare the grounds, booths, and lau laus for the free Feast we provide.   

The event celebrates the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, preparing them to carry out their mission to spread the Good News and build the church after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus. Pentecost, therefore, is considered the birth of the church and the beginning of the church's active mission.

Decorations and vestments for Pentecost are red, symbolizing the love and fire of the Holy Spirit. Other symbols of the event are the dove (peace), tongues of flame (inspiration), and wind (breath of life). Read Acts 1 and 2 in your bible for the full story of the first Pentecost.

 
 
 
PORTUGAL'S QUEEN ELIZABETH
The original Holy Ghost Feast was held during the reign of Elizabeth (Isabel) of Portugal, who lived from 1271 to 1336. She was known as a peacemaker and as "The Holy Queen" who was devoted to the Holy Spirit. She built a church dedicated to the name of the Holy Spirit in Lisbon and often demonstrated her devotion to her people and their well-being. There are many stories of the Queen's piety and service, but the dearest to the Portuguese people of the Azores is the one explaining their devotion to Queen Elizabeth and the Holy Ghost.

In the 13th century, the Azores Islands suffered from many violent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The most seriously hit was the Island of Pico. The people of these Azores Islands could not survive the drought, crop failures, and famine that now plagued them. They gathered together in prayer to the Holy Ghost for help. On the morning of Pentecost Sunday, there was a great rising sun, and the people of these islands saw in the sunrise a ship coming into the Port of Fayal. This ship was laden with necessities of life. The food was distributed among the people of the various islands, and they were very grateful that their prayers had been answered.

When their Queen heard of this providence, she organized a solemn procession in honor of the Holy Ghost. Accompanied by her maids she carried her Crown through the streets of Lisbon to the cathedral, where she left it on the altar as an offering of thanksgiving for the favors the Holy Ghost had given her people. In addition, she began a tradition of feeding the poor at Pentecost. Each year she chose twelve people to whom she gave a new suit of clothing and personally served them a meal at her table. The people of the Azores vowed that they and their children and their children's children would commemorate the day by giving thanks to their Queen for the sacrifice she made.

Since then, many Portuguese churches have displayed replicas of her eight-sided crown in remembrance of her goodness and God's grace. Later, in the 16th century, the church canonized this holy queen in recognition of the miracles that were attributed to her pious life.

KULA'S HOLY GHOST FEAST

The Portuguese who came to Hawaii in the late 1800's brought with them the devotion to the Holy Ghost and the traditions of St. Elizabeth. Some believe that the Holy Ghost Church's octagonal shape is related to the shape of her crown.

In 1891 a replica of the crown arrived in Kula as a gift of the Azorean people, and the first recorded Holy Ghost Feast was held in Kula shortly thereafter. In 1896, when the church was completed, the crown was housed in a special altar at the front of the church. Unfortunately, in August of 1985 the replica was stolen from the church. With the help of John Henry Felix, a new crown was received from the people of Portugal in 1987 and is now displayed in a special case near the entrance of the church. 

 
 
 
 
In the early days of the Kula Catholic Community, a drawing was held on Easter to determine which seven families would have the honor of keeping the crown in their homes for one week each between Easter and Pentecost. At the end of each week, the crown would be carried in procession to the next home chosen. Then it would be displayed at the Feast in a prominent place where other parishioners could make sacrifices to the Holy Ghost for prosperity, good harvests, and rain for drought parched pastures. A local queen, representing Queen Elizabeth of Portugal, accompanied the crown in procession, and ladies of the church served a free meal made from beef and pork donated by local ranchers. The family holding the crown at Pentecost held it until the next Easter drawing.

Today the Holy Ghost Feast celebrates Pentecost, as well as these traditions of the early Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii. A free lau lau meal is available to all who come, carrying on Queen Elizabeth's tradition of feeding her cherished subjects. Her crown is carried in procession following mass, accompanied by a local queen, and it is displayed prominently on the grounds in respect for St. Elizabeth. Many parishioners and visitors offer their personal sacrifices in the form of donations to the church in the name of the Holy Ghost. In addition, many other activities, auctions, traditional foods and crafts, and entertainment take place throughout the two-day festival, which also provides income for church facilities and activities for the coming year.

I went to a bull fight, once, when I was in Spain.  I lasted about 2 minutes into the fight.  I left crying.  The folks looked at me like I was crazy.

I'm going to start a tree for the gomes family because somehow it might tie to the bracchetti/silva dairy.  They certainly do live across the street from Melissa and CLL.  They are closely tied in friendship if nothing else, to the bracchetti/silva dairy.  This very well could be how melissa ended up going to the dairy.

Oh yes, at the bull fight there were little children, etc.  it was to them like a day at the ball park for me.  Different cultures are very fascinating.

The Marie Gomes Farm is named after his mother Marie Souza who married Ignacio Gomes.  They started the dairy in 1919 and it closed in 1979.  the parents and 4 of the brothers ran the dairy;
