We drove into Seattle on Saturday morning with son's American inlaws who reside just on the other side of the border.  We stay at the beautiful air-conditioned home of their relatives.  Beats a five star hotel.  There was a gathering.  I watched the Torchlight parade on a large screen TV and yakked with the ladies while the guys all went for a swim and ... then headed for the pool table.

Keepthefaith ... I think Seattle is a very beautiful city.  It is at par with Vancouver, BC.

Very much so.I've been to Vancouver a few times and  i think you'd find that most people believe Vancouver B.C. to be a tad bit more beautiful,as well as a little more international!I think both are breathtaking with the best of all worlds. ::MonkeyCool::

I was born and raised in Vancouver and ... lived in the outskirts (Burnaby) for the first seven years of marriage prior to moving to the Fraser Valley.  Whenever I am in the city my mind takes a stroll down memory lane and ... I may shed a tear or two when thinking of what once was but ... when all is said and done ... I am happy to get back home to the Valley.

Pages 230/231:  I can't say for sure if we'll ever know that answer to whether my daughter is alive or not.  I know it doesn't look good.  But just as that old metal spiral staircase rose from the ashes when our lake house burned down, so too faith stands strong in the remains of this devastating loss.  And just as my Dad built another house around that staircase, I will build another life around hope and faith.  It won't ever be the same.  But I pray that it will, at the very least, be useful.

The hope that filled Natalee's heart fills mine, and I will press on.  Faith got me up this morning, and faith will see me through tomorrow.  And the next day.  And the next.

This is a really sad story.  15 year old girl pregnant with twins by her brother if I understand correctly...goes into premature labor.  Baby girl dies being born, baby boy is seriously in need of further attention.  They try to fly him to Bogota, and the plane breaks down!  I'm not sure about the condition of the mother either.  

Maybe if Sandy Leiva sees this, she can help by translating the Diario article so that we can understand better.

AMBER CITY - The boy at the end of last week was born prematurely, was yesterday finally an ambulance flight to Baranquilla, Colombia flown for specialist treatment. Sunday was already an attempt to premature baby to Colombia, but the plane that they would leave had engine trouble.

It is a boy from a twin girl whose birth unfortunately the end of last week survived. The teenage pregnancy of the 15-year-old mother was also dramatically af. The teenage girl was late last week and had complications with diligence in the Horacio Oduber Hospital. There were babies, six months early in the world were. One of the babies, the girl survived when the birth does not. The boy came alive in the world but had urgently to the hospital in Colombia flown. An ambulance flight was arranged and was on the point of the premature boy towards Colombia to leave when a problem was found with one of the engines of the aircraft. The flight had stopped and the baby was a return back to the incubator and ambulance back to the hospital. It is unknown how it currently is with mother and son.

Janet, this excerpt about the staircase from Beth's book just made me cry this morning.

When I think of the loss of Natalee and everything that Beth has been through since that time, and in light of the revelations of the past few days, I am just about speechless.

I am patiently waiting for the confirmation that will connect the dots and so grateful for those who are working toward that effort.  My heart is heavy with the thoughts that some have knowingly or unknowingly aided the monsters who have made a career of preventing peace and justice for Natalee and her family.

If what is suspected can be confirmed, God help them all.

It's time for the truth and Justice for sweet Natalee.

Monkeys - Kyle said that he discovered the trap on the screen very early Christmas morning.  That's when Tim said  "it looks like a skull".  The contents of the trap were cleaned on January 7th.  Persistence continued to use side scan sonor to map the ocean floor well into February.  Now how could they justify all of those extra weeks of searching for a missing American woman if they had already found her in the beginning of January?  They also needed to get our focus off of Persistence and the ocean search.  Viola!  Caps enters the picture to tell us about Manserat Pond.  The picture of the cage was never supposed to be released and I'm sure that caused big trouble.  All of the evidence disappeared.  The fabric sent to Quantico wasn't Natalee's blouse.  There wasn't anything else in the cage - it was just a coconut or a piece of coral.  Back to the ocean search for Persistence so that they could continue with the grids and their non profit search.

I am not making light of the seriousness of the drought that you are experiencing in your area.  I should not complain.

The areas that are affected by this unusual heat wave on both sides of the American/Canadian border is uncomfortable but ... the forecast implies it will not go on forever.  The use of water is restricted in regards to watering of lawns/gardens but ... that is it.  There is lots of water in our reservoir from an over abundance of melting snow from the local mountains.  This past winter we experience record snow falls.

At present ... when home with the grandkids (6/7) ... we are camping out in our living room and kitchen where were have a window and a stand-alone AC unit or ... swimming in our neighbour's pool or ... taking refuge in our AC mall/Walmart ... bowling alley or ... movie theater.

We have made the decision not to take the boat out during this heat spell.  The small cabin becomes extremely hot when not travelling and ... warnings are in effect not to be out in the sun/heat for long between noon and dusk.

Kyle Kingman:  IF a keydetective's brother knew the latitude the trap was disposed at or very near, then it's probable the detective knew the same.

Kyle Kingman:  the detective was very internet and computer savy, which was unusual for the bulk of the Polis.

Kyle Kingman:  It seemed he knew who I was when we were introduced, and said something indicating he had been reading the blog.

Kyle Kingman:  The brother of the detective came to us and was very persistent over the information. He was almost in tears and just had to "clear his conscience" about it.  His brother, the detective came with him to 'validate him'.

Kyle Kingman:  I think he used his brother and gave us only the amount of information he felt we needed to come across the trap.  Basically, by using his brother and claiming the information he shared was only based on a vision, it distances the detective from responsibility and makes it hard to point back to him should it be a problem later.

Kyle Kingman:  However, this man was intelligent enough, cared about the case, yet was self implicated to a high enough level to want to be kept his knowledge a secret. He spoke well enough english and knew everything in my opinion.

Kyle Kingman:  The implications of this are tremendous. If true, it means that the early investigators knew where and how Natalee was disposed and it was kept secret and covered up.

Kyle Kingman:  Since the trap was only in 90ft of water and the detective knew about the latitude, did the Polis already know if it's location prior to the search?

Kyle Kingman:   The tip Dave got said the trap was 2-3 miles offshore. I found this one 2-3 miles offshore. 2.1-2.2 miles if memory serves.

Kyle Kingman:  The detective originally wouldn't meet with us and only wanted us to meet with his brother. We convinced him to meet along with his brother and made him feel as comfortable as possible. He reluctantly agreed but wouldn't talk.

Kyle Kingman:  After a while the detective started asking some questions and loosened up a bit. With the pointed questions he asked he proved he knew a lot, but we didn't press him

Gerold Dompig's words were "Natalee was put in that crab trap, they put rocks in it and they took her out 3 to 5 miles and she's 800 to 1,000 feet deep" and we always thought about the water anyhow.

Jossy and John are friends.  John went to Aruba in March to attend a Mansur wedding.

Has anyone thought about the possibility that the Mansurs own the mineral rights on the ocean floor?  They own 80% of the island.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if they own the mineral rights under the ocean shelf.  Translated that means whoever owns the mineral rights makes money off of every barrel of oil that is brought to the surface and John Silvetti had just finished the geological survey to determine where to place the off shore wells.

Oil in that area of the Carribbean is touchy because of Chavez.  He owns everything.  The US needs allys with oil.  Is that why they have been easy on Aruba?  They didn't want the world to know that they planning off shore exploration and drilling.  Another factor was probably money.  Geological exploration is expensive.  Silvetti's company was just about bankrupt.  Wouldn't it be nice to have all of those mapping expenses written off because it was done for the purpose of searching for the body of a missing American woman.  Their survey was done for a nonprofit organization.  How magnanimous.  Crappy Island will be a boom town if they drill for oil and find it and the Mansurs will greatly increase their fortune.

One thing here............in the Oil thread I posted where I had found that Venezuela claims ownership of the ocean floor - after 12 miles out.  I *think* Aruba (governemnt) claims those first 12 miles.  Either they do or Venezuela does.  So certainly no individual person owns (or even claims) rights to that ocean floor.

Low Rise Visibility Team Kick Off Party At Amsterdam Manor

Aruba’s Hospitality & Security Foundation, an organization sponsored by Aruba’s private and public sector - a joint venture between the hotels and the island’s police force - just celebrated another landmark at a sunset cocktail party on Eagle beach at Amsterdam Manor. Chief Atalo Winklaar at the helm of the friendly brigade, introduced his low rise team, the expansion of AH&SF, as promised.
Aruba Hospitality & Security Foundation was formed by Aruba’s tourism partners to provide assistance to the local Police Force. The idea was to create a visibility team patrolling the Palm Beach area, helping secure nine resorts and their environs. The visibility team took to the beaches in December of 2002.

Effective March 1st, it is also adding the low-rise areas to include on-foot patrols, ATVs and motorised vehicles, spanning the stretch from Brickell Bay to Divi Village.

Rob Smith, General Manager, Wyndham Aruba Hotel & Casablanca Casino is the chairman of the AHSF board. He is joined by Jan Van Nes, Playa Linda, Tom Wolf, Hyatt Regency and Carlos Aquino, Holiday Inn. The father of a missing Auburn University student is "worried sick" about his son, who vanished without a trace on a study abroad program in Asia.

Paul Harrie told FOX News Wednesday that he can't imagine where his typically reliable son Michael Griffin Harrie, 29, could be or why the family has heard nothing from him in weeks.

 Oh gee are we now allowed to post IP's? Seems it is fine in certain cases? Is it fine for certain people? I think maybe it is time to close the sitemeter to the "public" and ruin some of the fun.
 Also Looks like Renfro had a  vist to the plastic surgeon IMO. If I had to take a guess, maybe she has had an upperface/eyelid lift, with some type of chemical peel. Notice the eyelids are less "saggy"
and the eyebrows more arched in the recent pick. Maybe a little botox or filler around the mouth, as those lines are also less noticeable.

I just did a search of "Aruba" on google and interestingly nothing came up for Scared Monkeys in the search.  Would google manipulate their search function to hold back anything SM or Natalee related?

Just tried Aruba, Natalee Holloway and it does bring up plenty of items on that search.  Just strange nothing comes up on Aruba google search for SM or Natalee.

BB did get right upset about the first IPs posted here .  She forgets that she has posted IPs from GM's site meter herself.

Less that two months prior to Dave standing behind Beth, French and Riley upholding them in call for a voluntary boycott of Aruba ... Natalee's father was not supportive of this action and ... he met with Taylor Northrop who was a spokesperson for the Strategic Communications Task force.  Rob Smith was a member of the Task Force.

In April, 2008 ... did Dave take advantage of his prior connection to Rob Smith in an attempt to raise funds to further the Persistence searchor ... did Dave put John Silvetti in touch with Edison Briesen?

Page 156/157:  It is true that we have not been happy with the way the investigation into Natalee's disappearance was going, but we had no grip with the general population.  ... That is why I felt uncomfortable supporting a boycott.

On September 19, 2005, I met with Taylor Northrop.  The Aruban government hired him for damage control.  He was working with the Strategic Communications Task Force which was comprised of approximately thirteen members of the community, including government spokesperson Rueben Trappenburg, Rob Smith of the Aruban Hospitality & Security Foundation, and other business and political leaders.

The important thing is to raise funds. It will require corporate support as well as private donations. Dave and Beth have been doing a great job getting the word out and while I was on the island, Dave put me in contact with the head of the Hotel Association who is working on raising a sizeable amount.  So many on the island are supporting our efforts as well as people from all over the world. The media really blew the cage out of proportion. Although the cage initially provided some moments of "what is in there", I warned all on board that none of this information was to leave the boat. It was very suspect that a cage of this size was found where it was on the seafloor relative to the coast. My feelings were this was highly unusual and probably had something to do with something, but not what we were after. It was decided that the cage would be investigated further by divers, however, it was designated as only a target of interest. The crew moved onto other targets. Unfortunately, inexperience and frustration led to premature statements, including that we had found her I don't think anyone was more upset than I that this information came off the boat and caused the Holloway family more grief!

Nassau, Bahamas (eTN) - Aruba’s recent tourism numbers are expected to look positive compared to previous years. Travel & Tourism in Aruba was expected to rake in US$2354.9 million in economic activity as of 2007 end. Aruba's Travel & Tourism Economy (direct and indirect impact) is expected to account for 70.1 percent of GDP and for 52000 jobs (82.4 percent of total employment), according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. Despite a highly-sensationalized case involving tourist Natalee Holloway, an Alabaman teenager who traveled to the island but mysteriously disappeared two years ago, Aruba's Travel & Tourism is expected to report 2.1 percent growth in 2007 and 3.3 percent per annum, in real terms, between 2008 and 2017.

With good news about Aruba reported by the tourism authorities, last December however, the media revisited an old, but not long- forgotten story. Prosecutors closed the case on Holloway’s disappearance in May 2005 on the Dutch Caribbean island. Authorities said they do not have evidence to charge suspects Joran van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers, Satish and Deepak, who were last seen with Holloway. They have been notified by the public prosecutor that they will not be charged. The press was abuzz with the latest developments.

eTN caught up with Aruba’s minister of tourism and transportation, Edison Briesen, who said the island is back in business despite the revival of the Holloway incident, which has become fodder for the media. In an exclusive interview at the Caribbean Hotel Association Marketplace held January 13-15 on Paradise Island, Bahamas, Briesen confirmed the US remains strong as its number one market.

eTN: How is the Aruban tourism industry reacting to the developments on the Holloway case being over?

Minister Briesen: We were strongly hit by this incident. Unfortunately last year, they’ve closed the case. But in the Dutch justice system, the case is not close. It will remain a silent, open case should any lead come in. We have spent a lot of money bringing in experts from day one to the last day of December 2007, including Dutch investigation experts. We heard the mother and the Holloway family will seek publicity again in the US, which we’ll have to counter.

From 2005 to early 2006, Aruba was badly hit by the incident due to the negative publicity. In October 2006, Aruba tourism recovered. I think we’ve turned the corner.

eTN: With an image of being a peaceful island on the Caribbean, why do you think this incident has been lingering and has continued to impact the tourism industry of Aruba?

Briesen: I don’t know about the family problems they have which seem to be the reason behind this case. In the Caribbean, this is the first time an island has been pounded this long by a single event. It’s been over a year and a half now and the publicity has not ended. I don’t know what other reasons there exist. We’ve opened our doors to help the family solve their issue. We’ve been cooperative and have spent a lot of government money on the investigation.

eTN: Could this have been a bad example of security loophole?

Briesen: We’ve had the FBI, the Aruban special task force, F16’s and special recovery vessels searching the island. Nothing turned up. It’s really a strange mystery. The island is so small, social ties are strong. Everybody knows everybody in Aruba. For us, this has been a mystery as well. Unfortunately, there is no closure just yet.

eTN: Has this been a big challenge to tourism?

Briesen: Among all challenges we’ve faced, including airlift, US economy slowdown, gas prices etc, this particularly has taken up our time and resources. Everybody got involved in this case. People from the tourism department have been moved to the justice department to help solve the disappearance. This incident has kept us ‘hostage’ for more than a year. In 2006, we even launched an ad campaign worth $5 M in the US to counter the negative broadcast. On the other side of the coin, more people now know about Aruba. But I would not want Aruba to be known in the same way Iraq is known. One reason why we think it has been a hard blow to us.

We are the safest island in the entire western hemisphere. Things like this don’t happen in Aruba.

eTN: Do you want closure for the family?

Briesen: Of course, we went out of our way to help them. We’ve been very cooperative.

eTN: What message do you have for the US travelers?

Briesen: What happened in Aruba has given us and the Caribbean a hard lesson to learn, which has become for us and everybody a model for crisis management on the islands. This is one case which we, as a member of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, have learned from and employed as a crisis model. We’ve received support from the CTO and the CHA through the years, with sustaining the US market, our loyal clients for over 30 years. Three of four visitors to Aruba are Americans. This is a case that boggles us. But we’d like to forget and move on.

We got tremendous support from the US market. Forty-two percent of our rooms are timeshare, booked primarily by Americans. They’ve helped us turn the corner so Aruba can move on.

Founded on September 14, 1965, the Aruba Hotel Association (AHA) was formed by a group of hotel pioneers interested in fostering the development and diversification of the Aruban economy with tourism.

The decree included the following names as founders and first board members:

Other charter members included Chaiban Neme of The Strand Hotel, George Camara, Basi Ruti Hotel, Jan van Gijn Sr. of the Hotel Scala and Michael Kuiperi of the Aruba Tourism Board.

In the early years, the association included hotels exclusively and there was no administrative office or headquarters.
In the late 1970's, the association was expanded to include other tourism related businesses and the AHA became the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (AHATA) and a more expanded organization. The AHA was one of the first members of the newly formed Caribbean Hotel Association (1964). The CHA originated from a commission of the private sector within the Caribbean Tourism Association (CTA) which today is known as the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

During the AHATA's most recent history, the organization has grown to become recognized as Aruba's dominant tourism voice on behalf of the private sector. It enjoys broad support from the entire community and has established a unique partnership with the other private sector trade organizations uniting together to present historic and ongoing dialogue on a wide spectrum of relevant issues dealing with Aruba's economic growth and quality tourism development.

I could be wrong and ... in all sincereity I hope I am but ... I believe that Dave Holloway's connection with Purcell and Smith has deterred the cause of justice for his daughter.

The Board of Directors of the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association has accepted the resignation of Jorge Pesquera, President and CEO effective November 1, 2007. Chairman of the Board Ewald Biemans said: “We are very sorry to see Jorge leave Aruba as he approaches his fourth year of dedicated service, but realize that he has a great opportunity in Florida that would be very hard to pass up.” Pesquera has accepted the position of President and CEO of the Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau overseeing all tourism marketing for Florida’s largest county with 16,000 hotel rooms, a new convention center and some of the most upscale resorts in the country.

“I am leaving with very mixed feelings” said Pesquera, “Aruba is a great destination and I have been honored by the opportunity given to me by the board and the membership. It has been a great ride and a learning experience, but opportunities such as Palm Beach only come around once in a lifetime. I take comfort in the conviction that AHATA and our group marketing division of Meet Aruba are much more solid organizations today than they were four years ago. We have assembled a terrific team of professionals who truly care about our association and about Aruba and parting with them has made this decision so much more difficult. I am also thrilled to pass the baton to a highly seasoned tourism executive and first class guy.”

Ewald Biemans was pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Smith, currently GM of the Westin Aruba Resort to the CEO position effective October 1: “we are fortunate that Rob was willing and available to take on this most critical position and ensure continuity in the expanding role AHATA has undertaken as it pertains to destination marketing, advocacy and member support services. He has repeatedly shown his leadership qualities in programs and initiatives such as the Hospitality and Security Foundation and, most recently, the Marketing Committee. He has an intimate understanding of Aruba’s key markets and channels of distribution and has acquired extensive experience in the meetings and conventions arena. I am sure this will be a smooth and productive transition”.

Rob Smith is currently employed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts as General Manager of the Westin Aruba. He has been serving this resort since April 1998, and held the role of Vice President of the previous ownership group, Aruba Hotel Enterprises, and General Manager of the then Wyndham prior to the sale of the hotel. During his ten years in Aruba he has served the association in multiple capacities including:

Smith said: “I am thrilled to take on this key position in an association that I truly believe has been critical to Aruba’s success. The fine team at the former Wyndham - now Westin - has been my family for an entire decade and I will miss their camaraderie most of all. However, I am confident that at AHATA we will be able to create or influence destination wide initiatives aimed at improving business levels across the board. Aruba is my home and my family has deep roots in this island. In many respects I have been unconsciously preparing for this position for a long time and I am looking forward to carrying on the fine tradition that has been established with Rory, Horace and Jorge most recently.”

Aruba wrapped up 2007 with good-looking numbers on the board as far as tourism is concerned and prospects for the now-unfolding 2008 can’t look any better. As Aruba is willing to split the outbound travel markets on wiser shares in an effort to cut down on the heavy reliance it has on the U.S., more Spanish hotel companies are planning to open properties on the island. In this exclusive interview with Caribbean News Digital, tourism Minister Edison Briesen talks about his country’s projects on the road ahead.

Q.- How do you assess the results of Aruba’s travel industry in 2007 and what plans are now in store for 2007?

A.- 2007 witnessed a number of major changes for Aruba’s tourism, like the transformation of the Oranjestad seaport to accommodate cruise liners and the debut of Spanish hotel company Sol Meliá. We now have the cruise terminal in the crosshairs and that’s one of the things we’ll have to make a decision on quite soon in order to go ahead with all necessary changes that must be done at the Oranjestad port.

Another major project is the one led by the Divi Group. We now have a corridor somewhere between Eagle Beach and Palm Beach, yet we’re planning to open a second corridor not far from there. The Divi Group made an excellent presentation back in December and they’re ready to start the groundbreaking job as soon as we authorize them to do so, based on a number of conditions they laid out, such as the local government’s commitment to contributing part of the project’s infrastructure, more specifically a brand-new golf course and three hotels for a grand total of 1,200 guestrooms.

These are two largest projects we’re working on right now. However, we’re a bit concerned about all this due to the amount of new rooms which will be opening in Aruba. There are 2,000 new condo rooms under construction, and if we add the new expansions and the new projects, we’ll be sooner rather than later jumping from 7,200 rooms to as many as 13,000 or 14,000 accommodations on the island. Aruba has never been a massive travel destination, but a high-end, top-quality one.

Q.- How is Aruba’s Tourism Ministry going to tackle the new openings coming from European markets?

A.- Once all ongoing projects are done –including the Grand Occidental, RIU and Meliá projects- Spanish hotel companies will have as much as 14 percent of all guestrooms in Aruba. The Pullmantur cruise operation, on the other hand, is generating large tourist arrivals with the Boeing 747 aircraft that takes off in Madrid and lands in Aruba every Saturday, not to mention the Aida Tours cruises with four charter flights from Germany and a couple of other charter flights from UK. That adds up to a total of seven charter flights from Europe that arrive in Aruba every two weeks. In addition to all that, we can’t forget to mention our commitments with KLM.

I believe we’re doing well because the openings of new hotels from Spain-based companies in Aruba is giving us the possibility of reeling in far more travelers from Europe, visitors who come to our island nation with a strong currency in their pockets and who book average stays in the neighborhood of 13 to 14 nights.

Q.- Spanish hotel groups rely on all-inclusive operations in an effort to provide a better service at a lower price. That differs from the way U.S. hotel companies conduct business on the island and elsewhere in the Caribbean. How do you think this difference might affect the U.S. market and the way Americans run lodgings in your country?

A.- I must say we still have a heavy reliance on the U.S. market, somewhere between 73 and 74 percent of all travelers. We’d like to slash it down to 50 or 55 percent and yet that’ll be the lion’s share of the total because we just can’t rule out how much that particular outbound market means to us in terms of magnitude and nearness. Nonetheless, we’d like to raise the share of European trekkers to 15 percent, and have an equal share of 15 percent from Latin American visitors. That’s the formula we want to work on. We continue to rely way too much on the U.S. market and that poses some threats. That explains how important it is to us to have European and Latin American investors coming to Aruba. A better, evener proportion of the market pie among those three markets is the right thing to do and we’re working hard on that.

Q.- Is there any real possibility for Aruba to launch a true promotional effort in Europe before the coming elections on the island?

A.- We are well aware of the need to press that issue, but promotions take airlift, plane seats and with that view in mind we ought to sit down with KLM and try to negotiate openings with other airlines as well. As I said earlier in this interview, as much as 14 percent of Aruba’s hotel rooms will soon be in Spanish hands, so that means that we need to hold talks with Iberia, press this issue with Spanish groups to open a Madrid-Aruba route, not only for the Spanish market but also for the Portuguese and Italian markets as well.

The island is so small, social ties are strong. Everybody knows everybody in Aruba. For us, this has been a mystery as well. Unfortunately, there is no closure just yet.

eTN: Has this been a big challenge to tourism?

Briesen: Among all challenges we’ve faced, including airlift, US economy slowdown, gas prices etc, this particularly has taken up our time and resources. Everybody got involved in this case. People from the tourism department have been moved to the justice department to help solve the disappearance. This incident has kept us ‘hostage’ for more than a year. In 2006, we even launched an ad campaign worth $5 M in the US to counter the negative broadcast. On the other side of the coin, more people now know about Aruba. But I would not want Aruba to be known in the same way Iraq is known. One reason why we think it has been a hard blow to us.

We are the safest island in the entire western hemisphere. Things like this don’t happen in Aruba.

eTN: Do you want closure for the family?

Briesen: Of course, we went out of our way to help them. We’ve been very cooperative.

eTN: What message do you have for the US travelers?

Briesen: What happened in Aruba has given us and the Caribbean a hard lesson to learn, which has become for us and everybody a model for crisis management on the islands. This is one case which we, as a member of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, have learned from and employed as a crisis model. We’ve received support from the CTO and the CHA through the years, with sustaining the US market, our loyal clients for over 30 years. Three of four visitors to Aruba are Americans. This is a case that boggles us. But we’d like to forget and move on.

We got tremendous support from the US market. Forty-two percent of our rooms are timeshare, booked primarily by Americans. They’ve helped us turn the corner so Aruba can move on.

I cannot understand Dave Holloway's logic.  He concedes that a corrupt investigation is denying his daughter justice but ... his heart goes out to the Aruban people in regards to a voluntary boycott.  What about "other" unsuspecting "Natalees" who may become victims of Aruba in more ways than one.

On September 19, 2005, I met with Taylor Northrop.  The Aruban government hired him for damage control.  He was working with the Strategic Communications Task Force which was comprised of approximately thirteen members of the community, including government spokesperson Rueben Trappenburg, Rob Smith of the Aruban Hospitality & Security Foundation, and other business and political leaders.  Taylor thanked me for the press interview I had given denouncing the boycott and advised me that it made his job easier.

Page 9:  It was June 1, 2005, our first evening in Aruba, my daughter was missing and a detective was telling us to go to a local bar and have a beer. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He said it was the hot spot for vacationing kids. "Maybe she will show up." In fact, he was so confident that she was just partying it up or on drugs that he told us this particular bar would be the best place to find her. However, he did warn us to watch our drinks very carefully, adding that sometimes people put drugs into them.

Page 10:  While customers must pass by a bouncer at the door, there was no indication that he was stopping anyone from entering. The bar was packed with teenagers doing Jell-O shots and sleazy-looking island boys preying on the beautiful young female tourist ...

I did not want to stay inside, so we hung out around the street corners. In less than two hours, we probably experienced at least ten to fifteen offers from various drug dealers who wanted us to buy from them.

Page 16:  During our daylight searches throughout the island, our group came across many abandoned houses where drug addicts had left razors and other drug paraphernalia. Some were filled with foul smelling odors, feces, urine, cardboard boxes they used as blankets or beds, and general trash. One of those houses was located right next to a fine restaurant near the hotel area and a McDonald’s ...

Several times, people came into the hotel to meet with other locals and an apparent drug deal was taking place. The person would come in to scope out the area prior to doing the deal.

Page 183:  I commented to Jacobs about how short my statement was. He said that I could add anything I wanted to it. Also, I noticed that Eric Soemers's name was on it, but that detective was not even present during the interview. Now I wondered if Jacobs was making up everyone's statement and getting Eric to sign on to them. If that were the case, he could state anything he wanted, and it would look like an official statement made in front of a witness.

Page 10:  Jacobs also told us that the day before we arrived, he had interviewed the boys who eventually became the three main suspects in Natalee's disappearance ...... Jacobs considered the boys' statements to be consistent in that they had all said that they dropped Natalee off at the hotel. However, I did not realize at the time that Beth had already told him that the tapes did not show Natalee returning to the Holiday Inn that night.

Page 153/154:  We arrived in Aruba with reinforcements.  The authorities sent us to every corner of the island.  They had the FBI there for show, and the police held up every phase of the investigation.  It seems it was nothing more than a game to them.  We thought we were participating in what was happening, but maybe we were just pawns doing their bidding and following their leads.  After all, they were the ones who invented the game, and the suspects were the real players.  As in Joran's quote, don't hate the players, hate the game.  We do, but it isn't over yet.

Wasn't it  Edison Briesen who made such a fuss over the two wacko mediums and paid their way to Aruba?
He then said they had to something because Beth appeared on Oprah.

IMO, Rob Smith would have more than likely needed the approval of the Board of Directors of AHATA to approach the hoteliers, etc. in order to raise a sizeable amount of money to donate to the Persistence search.  He was fairly new in the position of CEO of AHATA (only since October 1, 2007).  Although he was not new to the organization, I don't think he would have made that move without agreement from the Board of Directors.

IMO, based on media comments by Minister of Tourism Edison Briesen; he was probably very irritated at the Perisistence presence for over three months in Aruba which was in the news.  I don't think he would have contributed to any effort that would have continued their presence and the daily reminder of what they were supposed to be there for.  I just don't see him approving a sizable donation; if he did there would have also been a press conference to announce it to the world.

In April, 2008 when Dave Holloway put John Silvetti in contact with the "Head of the Hotel Association" who Silvetti claimed was raising a "sizable amount" to further the Persistence search effort ... the Aruban "powers that be" had already recovered the contents of the trap.

I speculate that the "Head of the Hotel Association" knew darn well that the "sizable amount" was not going towards furthering the search for Natalee Holloway's remains.  I ask.  Was it a payout for a job well done?  How was the sizable amount split?

The important thing is to raise funds. It will require corporate support as well as private donations. Dave and Beth have been doing a great job getting the word out and while I was on the island, Dave put me in contact with the head of the Hotel Association who is working on raising a sizeable amount.   So many on the island are supporting our efforts as well as people from all over the world. The media really blew the cage out of proportion. Although the cage initially provided some moments of "what is in there", I warned all on board that none of this information was to leave the boat. It was very suspect that a cage of this size was found where it was on the seafloor relative to the coast. My feelings were this was highly unusual and probably had something to do with something, but not what we were after. It was decided that the cage would be investigated further by divers, however, it was designated as only a target of interest. The crew moved onto other targets. Unfortunately, inexperience and frustration led to premature statements, including that we had found her I don't think anyone was more upset than I that this information came off the boat and caused the Holloway family more grief!

Page 153:  Eric (Mansur) said that the police were aware of the gardener and what he had seen in the first week of June, as Eric's sister-in-law was Jan van der Stratten's secretary and she had advised her sister, Eric's wife, of what the gardener had witnessed.  Art found it inconceivable that the police could have known about the gardener and not have interviewed him by the end of July.

It is unimaginable when I think about all of the events that transpired over the first few months after Natalee's disappearance, and as I begin to methodically put the pieces together, how an intricate pattern of deceit is so clearly visible.  From the tiniest detail to the most significant information, such as the DNA samples that were ruled inadmissible after a judge ordered them to be taken, every single piece of evidence that did exist was disregarded.  And everything we did seems to have been a waste of time.

Page 229/230:  As I read on in the journal, I discover that one of the most moving entries is her desription of a hero.  Natalee writes:

A Hero is someone who puts others before himself.  He or she is very selfless and cares about the well-being of others.  Heroes also accept life's challenges and remain strong through tough times.  They also have a strong sense of determination and stick to goals and morals.  I believe that heroes uphold morals and try to encourage others to live life morally correct.  Heroes are not only just people called in times of physical danger, but individuals that can both emotionally and physically help people get through rough times.  A hero should always show respect for other people as well as respect for himself.

Instantly I realize that Natalee is poignantly describing the people who have reached out to help her family get through this "tough time."  It's almost as if she is thanking everyone herself by recognizing the importance of selfless people.  And I am amazed at her profound words here.  I sit and read the entire journal ...

Tim Miller of Texas EquuSearch is working hard to dispel media reports concerning the Natalee Holloway case.  Reports have surfaced today that Texas EquuSearch has collected $1.5 million to continue the search for Natalee, which is entirely untrue.

Also untrue is the report that Tim was traveling to Aruba with Fred Golba.  This has not been the first time that media has printed false reports regarding TES cases, to include the Caylee Anthony case.

This is the worst year financially for Texas EquuSearch since it began.  We are struggling on a daily basis to try to meet the needs of families across the country that are begging for help.  In these tough economic times, this false, irresponsible reporting could have a very negative impact on our ability to raise funds which go to serve families of the missing” said Miller.  “When the public hear that we have raised that large amount of money to dedicate to one search, they are not going to be willing to donate to our cause of finding missing people.  We are at a point of not being able to support the families that really need us, and when something like this happens, it is just devastating”. “We would not even attempt to raise that amount of money for just one case with so many families awaiting our help.

I have indeed spoken with Tim about the announcement on his website. It is very odd --- as that information is exactly what he told me. I don't know if you are in the Birmingham area, but he did a phone interview with us where he laid out the search, the boat, the price tag and said it would all happen in the next few months. He told viewers that himself on our air. I am horribly sorry if that has hurt donations or caused large donors to pull back...which is why I have taken the article off of our website. I have considered putting the whole phone interview on the internet to somehow vindicate myself so to speak, as I know people are upset.... but after speaking with Tim, he is convinced this whole thing has hurt donations, and I would never want to damage the chances of someone finding their loved one. I hope he will consider doing another interview and clarifying, but we'll just have to see how that turns out.

Natalee Holloway update: potential problems for search parties bound for Aruba

Tensions are building between two search parties involved in the search for missing Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway.

Right now, private investigator Fred Golba is currently in Aruba, searching a retention pond.

Tim Miller and Texas EquuSearch are planning a deep water search on the ocean floor in the next few months.

They’ve raised $1.5 million dollars to go back to Aruba to finish a search that began last March, then stalled when funding ran out.  

Underwater rovers will inspect suspicious containers on the ocean bottom that could hold Natalee’s remains.

“We still have 140 plus targets over there. We’re going to be bringing in a 360 ft boat from Trinidad,“ says Miller.

I reeived email from Jen Hale as well, saying basically the same thing.  I even called her boss as I believe Magnolia did as well.  He would not back down at all from saying the night before they had taped Tim Miller saying exactly that.  Being a fan of Tim and TES, I still don't know what to think about it.

I deeply respect and appreciate all the work Tim Miller has ever done for others finding their missing and TES as well but do acknowledge he has been known to enjoy a drink every now and again. 

So I don't know what to think and have to wonder where that amount came from.

Anyone have that one article by the Dutch journalist who also said there was to be a new search as soon as the money was raised?  I have no files on my laptop and PC not at this location.

I knew I did not have an agenda, didn't even really have a fixed theory as to what happened to Natalee, was not posting all over the world and had not lied about anything so attacking me made no sense.  I still don't understand the fascination of some with doing that.  Like Mark Purcell, for instance.  What have I ever done to him?  I don't think there is anything at all unique about my posts to warrant any attack and yet it happened.  Many other posters posted much stronger stuff.  It has really puzzled me as to what was so different about my posting to attract the amount of negative attention that it has.

And many here were eager to draw and quarter, flay me alive and beat me bloody.  Had to wonder why.  Made no sense as was a bit much for just not particularly liking another poster.  Usually one would just ignore them.

So at some point I had to wonder wassup with that.

It is a difficult situation with all Tim Miller has done.I've gone over it in my head a million times.If Tim Miller is aware of everything encompassing the cage/trap,as well as the pond hoax,John Silvetti's relationship with Caps & Crew & still continues to associate with with Silvetti & Schaefer.I'm at a loss!Do we know,beyond a shadow of a doubt,that Tim Miller is fully aware of all these things?

Also on the line are angry John Silvetti from Lafayette, Louisiana, and Tim Miller. The last call from Llano, Texas, where he is with a search for a 2-year old boy is missing. Miller continued after the abduction and murder of his daughter Laura TexasEquuSearch company in 2005 and organized several searches for Natalee. Silvetti searched last year with his ship Persistence months off the seabed in search of a trail of the U.S..

For example, John Silvetti sampled in the pond bottom to determine how deep they have to dig for something like four years ago to find. Silvetti: I have asked Mos samples to send to the FBI, because I may not do. But as far as I know, these samples are still in the refrigerator at the police. Mos takes months and phone calls not returned. This case stinks. Mos research has helped to kill.''

Mos says nothing of the samples taken to know. He criticized as emotion. ,, From Me to their course, if only to know,''he says. ,, I work against them. Where this idea comes from I do not know. I would like to solve the case. But I'll put the police if there is concrete evidence. If it is to them, they get the whole island in a heap. The Persistence also only has one item and that has nothing. I do not think we found something in the sea.''

Silvetti If the latter is, he almost jumps out of his skin. ,, What a disgusting allegation,''he calls. ,, We have 150 items found on the seabed of people come and we want to examine.''

Een 80 meter lang schip, uitgerust met moderne duikapparatuur ligt klaar voor vertrek naar Aruba. Een slordige 5 miljoen dollar kost het om 150 objecten op te duiken in de Caribische Zee en een vijver af te graven op zoek naar een spoor van Natalee. Een Amerikaans team, gespecialiseerd in het vinden van vermiste personen, heeft dat bedrag er voor over, maar wacht tevergeefs op steun van Hans Mos, hoofdofficier van justitie op Aruba, zegt Natalees vader Dave Holloway.

Holloway laat vanuit zijn woonplaats Meridian, Mississippi, weten dat hij bijna alle vertrouwen in het Arubaanse justitieapparaat heeft verloren: ,,Het is merkwaardig wat er op Aruba gebeurt.’’

Ook aan de lijn zijn een woedende John Silvetti uit Lafayette, Louisiana, en Tim Miller. De laatste belt vanuit Llano, Texas, waar hij bezig is met een zoekactie naar een 2-jarig jongetje dat vermist is. Miller zette na de ontvoering en moord op zijn dochter Laura het bedrijf TexasEquuSearch op en organiseerde in 2005 diverse zoekacties naar Natalee. Silvetti zocht vorig jaar met zijn schip Persistence maandenlang de zeebodem af op zoek naar een spoor van de Amerikaanse.

,,We hebben een getuige die zegt dat hij in de nacht van mijn dochters verdwijning verdachte Joran van der Sloot – tot zijn middel onder de modder en op één tennisschoen – heeft zien lopen en later Joran en zijn vader heeft zien langsrijden in een rode jeep,’’ vertelt Dave Holloway. De getuige vermoedt dat Joran in een verder gelegen vijver is geweest. Holloway: ,,Ik zou graag die vijver laten onderzoeken. Waarschijnlijk ligt Jorans schoen daarin.’’ Als de tennisschoen in de vijver wordt gevonden, ziet forensisch expert Richard Eikelenboom van laboratorium IFS mogelijkheden voor dna-onderzoek. ,,Ons bedrijf kan daar mogelijk nog dna van af halen.’’

Hoofdofficier van justitie Mos wil echter het water niet laten onderzoeken. ,,Dat Joran bij dat water zou zijn geweest, is niet meer dan een veronderstelling van die getuige,’’ legt hij vanuit Oranjestad uit. ,,Als ik overal achteraan moet gaan, ben ik de hele dag bezig. En al zou ik er iets vinden, dan nog is dat geen bewijs dat Joran iets heeft gedaan.’’

Vader Holloway begrijpt het niet: ,,Al is het geen bewijs, het kan je op weg helpen. Als officier van justitie heb je de verplichting om de zaak tot op de bodem uit te zoeken. Hij zegt dat Jorans vader Paul van der Sloot een goede man is, een vriend. Ik vraag me af of er corruptie in het spel is.’’

Holloway, Silvetti en Miller hebben de getuige een leugendetectortest laten ondergaan door een ex-CIA agent. De man doorstond de test glansrijk, maar het Openbaar Ministerie wil de uitslag niet opnemen in het Holloway-dossier. ,,Ik mocht me er niet mee bemoeien,’’ briest Miller. ,,Maar Natalee is een Amerikaanse, zij is een van onze meisjes. Wij zetten onze beste mensen, onze beste hulpmiddelen in, zodat iedereen die van Natalee hield en de Arubanen de zaak kunnen afsluiten.’’

Zo heeft John Silvetti monsters genomen in de vijverbodem om te bepalen hoe diep ze moeten graven om iets van vier jaar geleden terug te vinden. Silvetti: ,,Ik heb Mos gevraagd de monsters op te sturen naar de FBI, want dat mag ik niet doen. Maar voor zover ik weet, liggen die monsters nog steeds in de koelkast op het politiebureau. Mos neemt al maanden de telefoon niet op en belt ook niet terug. Deze zaak stinkt. Mos heeft dat onderzoek om zeep geholpen.’’

Mos zegt niets van de genomen monsters te weten. Hij doet de kritiek af als emotie. ,,Van mij mogen ze hun gang gaan, als ze het maar even laten weten,’’ zegt hij. ,,Ik werk ze niet tegen. Waar die gedachte vandaan komt, weet ik niet. Ik wil de zaak graag oplossen. Maar ik zet alleen de politie in als er concrete aanwijzingen zijn. Als het aan hen ligt, halen ze het hele eiland overhoop. De Persistence heeft ook maar een object gevonden en dat heeft niets opgeleverd. Ik denk niet dat we in de zee iets vinden.’’

Als Silvetti dat laatste hoort, springt hij bijna uit zijn vel. ,,Wat een walgelijke bewering,’’ roept hij. ,,We hebben nog 150 objecten gevonden op de zeebodem die van mensen afkomstig zijn en die we willen onderzoeken.’’

Forensisch expert Richard Eikelenboom bevestigt dat er een kans is dat het lichaam of kleding van Natalee op de zeebodem wordt gevonden. ,,Zeewater is slechter voor dna dan zoet water,’’ zegt hij, ,,maar ook dan zijn er nog mogelijkheden voor onderzoek, zeker als het lichaam wordt gevonden.’’ Eikelenboom adviseert om de objecten te laten opduiken en vervolgens onder water te bewaren. Tijdens het dna-onderzoek worden de stukken dan pas uit het water gehaald. ,,Het dna gaat in tijd en onder waterige condities natuurlijk wel achteruit. ’’

Dave Holloway is bang dat de zaak in de doofpot verdwijnt. ,, De politie heeft niets anders gedaan dan de boel te verpesten. Mos zegt dat de zaak al meer dan 7,5 miljoen euro heeft gekost. Ik denk dan bij mezelf: ze hadden helemaal niet zoveel geld hoeven uitgeven. De zaak had allang opgelost kunnen zijn.’’ Tim Miller: ,,Met alle zoektochten die we hebben ondernomen, hebben we de autoriteiten miljoenen dollars bespaard. Het gaat ons er alleen om het meisje te vinden.’’

Last year Silvetti searched the seabed in search of a trail from the American girl for months with his ship Persistence.

“We have a witness who says that he saw suspect Joran van der Sloot walking in the night of my daughters disappearance; up to his waist in the mud and walking on one tennis shoe, and later Joran and his father have been seen seen driving a red jeep”, says Dave Holloway. The witness suspects that Joran has been in a pond a bit further on. Holloway: “I would like the pond to be investigated. Probably Jorans’ shoe is in it.” If the tennis shoe is found in the pond, forensic expert Richard Eikelenboom from laboratory IFS for DNA research sees possibilities for a DNA research. “Our company might get DNA from it.”

Chief Public Prosecutor Mos does not want to examine the water though. “That Joran was near that water is no more than an assumption from that witness”, he explains from Oranjestad. “If I have to follow everything, I’m busy all day. And even if I would find something, it still wouldn’t be evidence that Joran has done something.”

Father Holloway doesn’t understand. “Even if it’s not evidence, it can help you get started. As a prosecutor, you have the obligation to investigate thoroughly. He is saying that Jorans’ father Paul van der Slot is a good man, a friend. I wonder if corruption plays a part.”

Holloway, Silvetti and Miller have put the witness through a lie detector test; done by a former CIA agent. The man passed it with flying colors, but the OM doesn’t want to include the results in the Holloway file. “I wasn’t allowed to interfere,” Miller says angrily. “But Natalee is an American, she is one of our girls. We put our best people on it, our best tools, so everybody who loved Natalee and the Arubans can case close the case.”

For example, John Silvetti has taken samples from the pond bottom to determine how deep they have to dig for to find something from four years ago. Silvetti: “I have asked Mos to send samples to the FBI, because I’m not allowed to do that. But as far as I know, those samples are still in the refrigerator at the police station. Mos says he doesn’t know anything about the taken samples. He labels the criticism as emotion. “They can go ahead if they want to, as long as they inform us,” he says. “I’m not hindering them. I have no idea where that idea is coming from. I really want to solve the case. But I only put the police on matters when there are specific leads. If it would be up to them, they would turn the whole island upside down. The Persistence has only found one object and that didn’t lead to anything. I don’t think we will find anything in the ocean.”

When Silvetti hears the last remark, he almost jumps out of his skin. “What a disgusting allegation,” he says. “On the seabed we have found 150 items coming from people we want to investigate.”

At one point, I put faith in the good of mankind which lead me to trust in hans mos.....got burnt.

Money is powerful...I so hope they haven't been swayed for monetary gain.......I know that is horrible to even type....but I can't resolve their actions without further evidence of their roles at this time......
