Dana:

Clint, let's talk about the public's fascination with high profile cases, the Holloway case for example. That's a very sad case which you can spin 50 different ways from corruption to incompetent investigation to all of a sudden there's civil suits going on, but the bottom line is that the family doesn't have any answer yet; they haven't been able to bring their daughter home.

This is a big time media event, although we don't see mainstream media dealing with it anymore unless something comes forward. What went wrong or what went right say with the Holloway case and the media?

Clint:

Well, I think for the case itself, it started out in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't think, I've been down to Aruba. I went down for NBC and MSNBC, to do some investigative reporting at the time. I was down in Aruba and some of the islands as an FBI agent helping on investigations when I was a profiler, so I'm familiar with LE in those areas and sometimes they get crimes that are just, jurisdictions, departments can get a crime that's simply over their heads.

The investigation, although it should be Investigation 101, can get away from them but most agencies are not familiar with what happens when you have a tremendous media rush. The OJ Simpson, the JonBenet Ramsey, the Laci Peterson cases in the States, other high profile kidnap and homicides, that if you as a law enforcement officer and agency, if you haven't seen the tsunami that the media can bring across your front yard and over the top of your police department, it's a lesson to behold and to understand that you have to get hold of the case and get some type of relationship going with the media before you simply lose control.

In the case of Natalee Holloway, again having been down there and I spoke to one of the Kalpoe brothers myself, I know Beth, Natalee's mother, very well from numerous interviews and television shows that she and I have done together and you know, I saw a lot of people over that one year where that story was very, very prominent in the media really bashing, really taking shots at Beth Holloway Twitty and you know, knowing her personally, this was not anyone who was out for anything for herself other than one simple thing which she said over and over again "I just want to know what happened to my daughter". That's all she was asking. You know, I didn't see her as someone who was out sensationalizing, but I did see the media putting their teeth in it.

A couple of months ago I was walking in to MSNBC to do an interview and Greta van Susteren was walking in at the same time so we started talking and I said, you know, Greta, are you still doing something on the Holloway case? And she said, you know, we kind of painted ourselves into a corner on that, she said we ran with that story so much and the reality is, Greta didn't say it but on her behalf, her ratings doubled at least because she was running that story, so Greta said we've sort of painted ourselves into a corner that we've run with this story so much that the listening public expects us to continue and if we don't, someone else will do it. And that's the interesting thing now, if we have like in the States we have Fox, we have CNN, MSNBC, all in competition, all in an absolute dog race trying to get the maximum ratings they can, well does that mean you have to sensationalize these stories?

Again, in the DC sniper case, I was on TV night and day talking about that and working very hard just as you would have done Dana, not to get carried away in speculation, I heard so many guys, some New York City cops saying it's going to be two skinny white kids and I heard, to include myself saying, well statistically it's a lone white male but in this case I don't think so I said. Number 1, any lone white male driving a white panel truck, of which there was 60,000 in the local area, has already been stopped and proned out on the highway by the State Police, the City Police and the FBI. We know who's driving these vehicles, so I don't think it's a white van that's being used and Number 2, I don't think it's a white guy and I think it's two guys not because I'm a brain, not because I'm smart but you need one guy to drive and one guy to shoot if you're going to get away. It's just common sense, so in my sense, I said it's probably two black guys, a younger and an older, one with military experience, they're driving a vehicle together, one's driving and one's shooting. Well, you know that turned out as the case was. I remember Jerry McXXX who was running MSNBC at the time, I called him up and told him I don't want to be on television anymore talking about this case, I think it's wrong. I think myself and every other talking head, I think we're feeding this case. I think there's a media frenzy going on. I said Number 1 this is more information than the public needs and Number 2 I think the shooters are watching us every night and I think we're feeding their desire to go out and do this. I said we're wrong, I think I'm wrong and I don't want to do this anymore.

The media is still going to run with a story and it just depends on the network how sensationalistic they want to get or do they want to stick with the facts that you and I have learned in law enforcement and investigations over the years and the question is does the public demand the Holloway story, the JonBenet Ramsey story? Is the public out there demanding the media to do it or is the media spoonfeeding us something that's so sensational, it's like a soap opera that draws us back night after night to see what's new?

I mean, look at the Holloway case; in over a year nothing really changed: three primary suspects, she got in a car, she drove away with them, it's very likely that somehow they knew something about how she expired that night. They were interviewed, no physical evidence, I mean that's the story and the media, television in america ran with that for almost a year, re-telling the same half dozen sets of facts over and over again

Dana:

Yeah, for sure and I think you said it best Clint: common sense investigating, common sense reporting, amazing what that can do. Thank you for coming on my friend ....

Yeah, maybe if we'd had common sense investigation and common sense reporting Natalee Holloway would be home.

Good, your thought about the Butcher of Baghdad meeting his Waterloo and again I want to thank him for deciding to do that during a Dana Pretzer Show and too bad we couldn't have arranged the rights to have it done live here on Scared Monkeys Radio Network.

Red:

I was trying to see if I could get an interview with him to see what was going through his mind before they tied the noose around his neck, but the comical thing was first they announced it was going to be done on Sunday, then they said Saturday, hey why wait, the man deserves it.

Dana:

Might as well get rid of him. How have you been? How was your Christmas? What's going on?

Red:

Oh it's been, you know, kind of a crazy time. With the holiday season, Christmas and New Year's I certainly wanted to call in and wish you a Happy New Year. I'm sure it's a crazy time for you a police officer

Dana:

Yup

Red:

as people can do some foolish things this time of year.

Dana:

It's weird, but anyone who's in public service, policing, EMS, hospitals from about the 15th to the 30th of November until about the 15th to the 30th of January, you might as well have a full freakin moon all the time and you know I tell you, it takes away from you know, you deck the halls and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and stuff like that I really don't want to see another drunken Christmas party or anything for a long time and my kids call me Scrooge but I guess I've been a cop too long.

Listen, your thoughts on Clint van Zandt and Tim Miller tonight. I wanted to talk to Clint about the media and you've got to admit this has been a hell of a year, 2006 for the media and high profile cases, whether it's ramsey, Holloway you name it, it just seems to go on and on and on. Have they done a good job?

Red:

I mean Dana, they've had their highlights and they've certainly had their lowlights. What's interesting is I've heard many of the shows they do around this time of year, they talk about all the things that have transpired in the last year and some of them have even made fun of their own coverage which is comical, because I've heard more often than not the whole flight back by John Mark Karr and the media being critical, yet they're being critical of what they themselves put on the air which is even more bizarre than I guess the original showing / watching a man eating shrimp and sipping champagne on a plane. They spent thousands of dollars, I think Clint had said it on a past show: would there have been anyone on the plane if it weren't for the media....

I hope for 2007 that many of these producers, some of whom I know personally, get a quote as to what the american public really wants to hear and watch because there are so many stories and I know we're going to be doing a lot of things that are much different in 2007 to give light and give voice to many stories that just aren't heard on the mainstream media and hopefully by giving them a voice they in turn will be given a fair shot by the mainstream media itself.

Dana:

Absolutely, that's what it's all about. If I were to rate the cable news shows I'd give them a "C" for their coverage. Again, Clint is a friend and a great guest but I think he naila it a lot of the time when he talked about having conversation with Greta van Susteren .....

Red:

I think the media goes into a story with an obvious slant, a bias and an agenda and it becomes more and more apparent depending on the story, whether we're talking about the Duke Lacrosse case, whether we're talking about Natalee Holloway and Greta has been covering that recently, whether it's any of them, they cannot just go in with an open mind, they have to slant it a certain way and it becomes fairly obvious that that's what they're doing and then if it doesn't turn out the way that they picked the side, they have egg on their face. It's crazy in the sense that you would alienate half your audience by reporting in this manner and like I said, it only goes on so many times

You've done many interviews this year with the Melinda Duckett case, and there's a certain slant there, you're either on one side or the other but the reality is you should be on the side of the missing child

Dana:

For sure, before I let you go I want to thank you, the rest of the monkeys, Tom and everybody who's been there for 2006 and I think we'll have a great 2007. We're doing something here and you guys are doing things at Scared Monkeys that nobody else is doing right now and we're going to make a difference, we are making a difference and I'm really looking forward to 2007 and working more with you sir.

Thank you very much Dana, it's been great having you as an addition on to the site. Tom has done yeomen's work as well of course (Anne??) has been, I just don't know where we'd be without her. Like I said, it's all about trying to make sure we make a difference and try to spotlight what really is important and there are so many important that we will obviously try to do better in 2007 and there's some things behind the scenes even (inaudible) we've been talking to some people about doing some stuff a little bit different and hopefully in the new year it will only get better. I really appreciate you coming on and being the "Speak no Evil" monkey.

Yes, she painted herself into a corner, and she had the real killer cornered and fell for him, smoozing him all the way to the bank when she paid him for all those lies.  No, don't tell me she did not pay him.  I know how that works.  Been there, done that.  Maybe not with a check, but he was paid for that load of PIMP lies he told her, and you are so right, Leslie.  Not only did she fail to paint him into a corner, she failed the objectivity test of a journalist, not to mention an attorney.  IMHO, she is good at neither.

SF, get that wound taken care of.  That is of the utmost import, so that 2007 will be better and brighter.  You can always update the thread when you are doing well, so take care and hope your day is very pleasant.

Let me play devils advocate with this.....you tell me what you think.

Regarding the "painted into a corner" statement, and the quest for ratings. In trying to understand Greta and her job I would have to give her some credit for being a sharp cookie to begin with. I think what she meant by the statement was that as she supported Beth and the search for answers in aruba, and attempted to locate Natalee, her ratings soared. ........but then to what end? There was no new info , but the pressure was likely on her to maintain ratings.  That was her corner.

I can possibly see Greta saying to Beth something to the effect, " In order to keep Natalee in the news and on the front page things have to go foward and I may need to vary what appears to be my stand on the situation". (Afterall if JVDS knew that Greta emphatically supported  the case against him as Natalee's killer.....why wold he then ever consent to an interview ?.....but Greta had 3)

Beth has seen the interviews Greta did with JVDS, and has heard her comments. Since then Beth has been interviewed by Greta, and I doubt that  Beth would speak with her if she felt that Greta had joined Sloots side. IMO Greta's perceived support of JVDS is just a way of "getting out of the corner". I don't think it is how she truely feels about JVDS and his guilt, but rather  it is the stand that will get her foot in the door  to Aruba.

Second, months ago hubby, sister, and I bought tickets to see Cirque du Soleil in Atlanta tomorrow. Sister very generously wants to stay home with the old folks now while hubby and I go to Atlanta. I believe this :shock: .  I always thought there was a relationship between these two.  Once again another blonde.  Paulus has a thing for the blondse.  Many said it was Joran who had a thing for blonds but I thought that was BS.  Look at the pictures of Joran with his previous girlfriends they are all dark haired.  One his recent one was blonde and I believe that was a publicity stunt.

Greta saw a huge chance for huge ratings and she took it. Typical talking head type interview though that made no difference. Except to put Greta's credibility as a interviewer into question. I dont doubt her intention,I just think she did not know how to handle it when it started. Made her look foolish in my opinion.

I cannot remember the specifics of the conversation, but I do remember how cold Greta was to Beth. I think that Beth comes on Greta's show because it is one of the few shows that still does media coverage on Natalee...IMHO that is the only reason...

Sue, I'm not a lawyer, but my opinion is that since they filed in the US, yes, they would have to come here to testify, if they pursue the suit.

The thing with Greta is interesting. She is not a prosecutor, and she is not a newscaster exclusively for Natalee's case. I honestly don't think she was adequately prepared for the interview with Joran. There were questions this board would have put to Joran, and answers that would have been followed up with more questions, that would have changed the tenor of it. At the very least, there would be a record of his answers that would have defined the walls of his own corner. There is plenty of paint available if only KJ would pick up a brush!

Greta has a tendancy, in all cases, to be what she is: a defense attorney and a far, far, left liberal. Those things aren't inherantly good or bad, but you can bet her "starting box" will be to want to believe a defendant and she won't easily be moved from that position without hard, tangible, evidence. In the grey area, where I would recognize the entire picture of circumstantial evidence, she sees each piece alone and is able to formulate and consider all possibilities for explaination with equal weight. That's why, particularly in this case the devil is in the details. I don't think Greta was in command of all the details and she certainly had not meshed them into a single whole for conclusion. Lastly, Greta is a softy by nature, in my opinion. She's "fair" , literally to a fault. There was a young guy in front of her, accepting responsibility for lying about the HI, obviously "devoted" to his family, presenting himself as desperate to get the "truth" out and even defying his parent's advice, to do that. While we were scrutinizing the blothches in his face, Greta was hearing Joran's "sincerity". And don't underestimate Joran. He lies well.

I think Beth is simply grateful for the continued coverage Greta has provided. That's one of the few avenues Beth has to help keep any pressure on and hope alive. I think Beth's worst fear is that Aruba will succeed at it's efforts to make this case disappear. Greta's nature is applied to Beth as well as Joran, and that "softy" side really would like to help Beth find closure. Greta has been one of the best, if not the best in MSM, to cover it. That's been mutually beneficial to them.

Greta's damge done, IMO, is not as much what she did, although I think it was extremely unproffessional of her to render an opinion to the viewing audience, but in the omissions in a rare opportunity to strengthen the case against Joran. That interview was not behind closed doors, and could not have been manipulated. Greta's "On The Record" had potential. She, and ultimately Beth, missed it.

Beth was making plans to do a big swing throughout the country with the support of law enforcement in the USA.

Greta met someone in the airport whose number she got and later that evening they talked for an extended period of time.

The Refugees were proposing all kinds of wild scenarios and sending Greta information about how Paulus was getting mail from Natalee, etc.

Beth broke her leg.

Greta scored an interview with Joran based on that someone who she met in the aiport with whom she talked for an extended period.

Greta called Beth just as she was about to take her cast off and hit the road and told her that she now believes Joran, not Beth.  Beth was very hurt when she received this call which knocked the wind out of her sails and almost derailed her tour.

Then we learned that Sprong and Tacopino were in the picture.

I am not going to speculate here what happened, but I have an idea and I have an idea that Beth no longer trusts Greta, because she has seen the real Greta.

On Greta in what may have been the first interview after Greta's LoveFest with Joran, the chill I detected was from Beth to Greta.

Greta said "It's nice to see you, Beth."  And Beth replied, "Thank you, Greta."

She did NOT say, "It's nice to see you, too."  Normally a southerner would say that automatically without thinking.  I think Beth thought to not say it.  Not quite southern cussin' but close.

If Greta indeed did call Beth, as in Tyler's post, to say she beleives Joran, that was tacky, very tacky.....a backstabbing thing to do IMO

When I look at your post, Carnut, I see a baby that turns. However, when it's back is to me, it's diaper is covered by a black rectangle. Do you suppose my new laptop is demon possessed or something?

As far as Greta's coverage .....Greta's motivation is ratings.
It was quite a thing for her to interview Joran. Was Joran paid ?
I don't think he did it for nothing regardless what Greta says. Money could have been paid to the Sloots and how would anyone know ?

There will be a response to the Dr. Phil lawsuit and until then we're just guessing. Doubt if there will be a trial. The response has to be filed within 30 days, read somewhere Jan 20 ?
When the Kalpoes see the respose, they will make a decision.
I do expect an offer to be made to settle out of court and accepted.
Not for the ten million, but a lesser amount. Why ? Dr. Phil is going to be on trial also and his reputation would be more damaged by a trial and full media coverage. Less damaging and cheaper to just give them some money with not alot of details. Like a non disclosure settlement.
I am not in love with the media personalities who covered this case
and their motivation is not to solve or explore but to gain ratings.

Yes, we are just guessing until we see Dr Phil's response and also what he does.  

He is full cover of Good Housekeeping, very high profile right now.  I don't think he will make offer unless his insurance forces him to do so.  Last time he discussed this, he was in victim mode.  His attitude I think will be Look at all I did to try to help and this is the thanks I get.

He did send Skeeters and another investigator to Mexico looking for any Americans, etc. and paid Skeeters for the interview, etc. and I am sure has spent quite a bit of money already on this.  I think he will make himself look like the good guy and the Kalpoes murdering scoundrels trying to make a fast buck.

I don't think this will hurt his reputation one bit but in fact enhance it.  I think he will come across as a person trying to do good and being punished for it by greeds bastages.

Remember someone posted the law that makes an exception for members of the media when recording someone?  The same law that allows Jossy to tape Dompig with or without permission grants Skeeters the same right because according to the suit filed by Kalpoes, he is a member of the media by his employment by Dr. Phil.

So right off the bat, they are at a disadvantage in this regard.  It doesn't matter if permission was given or not.  Almost all the suit is what Beth did and attempting to blame Dr. Phil for the actions of another person which is not going to work well in U.S. court because Dr. Phil has no control over other people and the intent has to be proven.  Dr. Phil himself said almost nothing really negative on air about the suspects.  Others did but not him personally.

I don't think they have much of a case, the Kalpoes, and I sure hope Phil fights it.  I doubt Court TV will cover it given all the connections to Steve Cohen, Joey T and the plaintiffs.  No way are they going to if it makes the suspects look bad and I can't imagine how it could do otherwise.

FWIW, I think Skeeters and his firm have tendered their defense to the attorneys for Dr. Phil, et al, and that Dr. Phil's lawyers will be running the show.  I think Dr. Phil will see the suit through far enough to find out what evidence will be coming out through discovery before any decisions are made about paying off the Kilpoes to go away.  JMO.

I would agree with what you posted above if not for the fact that advice on jury selection is Dr. Phil's forte and how he met Oprah and all of that.  I am sure you will recall he used to have a consulting firm for just this and I think he will relish getting involved.

I am sure he had a say in encouraging Oprah in her suit with the Cattleman's Assoc. and she fought it and won.  Wasn't it also for defamation?  So he helped select the jury there and is familiar with ins and outs of defamation.  And like that case, this one would never be on TV but Klaas just happens to live nearby.  She might have to be our eyes and ears for that.

It was interesting to hear several people on Fox News saying they just don't think Dr. Phil would do this, he has too much integrity, etc.  You sound like a lawyer in that last sentence, Kat_Gram.  If this were just a lawsuit, not a battle for answers for Beth, I'd agree.  He does have to answer to others, but I think he will want to use this suit to nail these guys down in some way, trip them up to admit something or back them into a corner somehow to get them to tell what else they know.  He has the training, knowledge and experience to do that.

With the discussion of the cases ongoing here, I have been waiting for a slow time to post this transcript from the Abrams show back in Dec 2005, so that it does not get lost by the TV station taking it down.  Here goes:

ABRAMS:  Hi, everyone.  First up on the docket, the story in Aruba just keeps getting more bizarre.  We have done our own ABRAMS REPORT investigation into a critical piece of evidence in this case, an interview with Deepak Kalpoe, one of the three suspects in Natalee Holloway disappearance.  

An interview that could determine whether he and other suspects get arrested.  The issue:  Did Kalpoe say that he and the other suspects had sex with Natalee the night she disappeared or was it just the opposite?  Did he deny it?  We are still confused.  

And now you can try to figure it out along with us.  Now listen very carefully.  First, the portion of the interview as played on the “Dr. Phil” show.  This is the one that initially caused the controversy.  

(BEGIN AUDIOTAPE)

JAMIE SKEETERS, POLYGRAPH EXPERT:  And the question I‘ll ask you is, if you intentionally killed her?

ABRAMS:  Wow! I mean it sounds like exactly the opposite and these are supposed to be the same tapes.  This is crucial.  

All right, who better to figure this out than the people we‘ve got joining us right now.  Joining me now is Arlene Ellis Schipper, an Aruban attorney, member of Aruba‘s Strategic Communications Task Force.  She e-mailed us the Aruban portion of the tape we just played.  

Richard Burton is CEO and founder of V, a company that provides voice analysis—Richard Parton.  And Paul Ginsberg, president of Professional Audio Laboratories, who has analyzed tapes for the FBI, CIA and others.  All right and we may be joined by Jamie Skeeters in a moment.  

All right first, let me ask you, we have been here all day and you have been listening to these tapes with us.

RICHARD PARTON, PH.D., VOICE ANALYST:  Yes.  

ABRAMS:  What is your take on this?  

PARTON:  From the tapes that we recalled off of Mr. Skeeters‘ hard drive and from what we heard from the “Dr. Phil” show, we look at the waveforms and there is no question from the way the words stand on the waveforms that he said that they did have sex.  Also in context with the conversation that followed it looks like it said they did have sex with her.  

ABRAMS:  All right.  Now what about the tape from—so you are basically saying that—you compared the tape that Jamie Skeeters had and “Dr. Phil” tape and you‘re saying they didn‘t fundamentally alter it.  They made some edits, but...

PARTON:  Right.

ABRAMS:  ... but they didn‘t fundamentally alter what was said on that tape, correct?  

PARTON:  Yes.  

ABRAMS:  OK.  What about this tape from Aruba that sounds like he‘s saying just the opposite?  

PARTON:  Well look at—what we do with our analysis is we see people stuffed behind the words.  There is no difference from the “Dr. Phil”, the Skeeters tape or the Aruban tape on the thoughts that Kalpoe had on there.  The only difference is some extra noise at the end of the word didn‘t and that noise is missing from the Skeeters original and from the “Dr. Phil” show.  

ABRAMS:  All right.  Arlene, you are convinced are you not that in the version that you have heard that he says just the opposite, that he says he did not have sex with her, right?  

ARLENE ELLIS SCHIPPER, ARUBAN ATTORNEY (via phone):  Yes.  The version

that I saw with the footage shows the body language, him shaking his head

no and stating no, she didn‘t.  Now, I‘m not clairvoyant as the other

(INAUDIBLE) that says I can see through into his mind through his words.  I

can just listen to the words and I can see the video.  And I see a nodding

a shaking head, no and no, she didn‘t.  

ABRAMS:  All right.  Let me do this.  I‘m going to play now in order all three.  I‘m going to play Jamie Skeeters‘ version—again, that‘s the actual one we got.  We went to Jamie Skeeters‘ office and recorded exactly what he had on his hard drive.  Then I want to play the version that Arlene has sent to us.

Again, I‘m going to do this without words on the screen this time so you all can listen and decide for yourselves and then we‘re going to play the “Dr. Phil” version.  All right, so let‘s start with the—this is the Jamie Skeeters‘ version.  This is what actually came from the hard drive.  Here it is.  

(BEGIN AUDIOTAPE)

SKEETERS:  Nobody told her that you can‘t (EXPLETIVE DELETED).  You know?  I mean and I‘m sure she had sex with all of you.

ABRAMS:  Before we go to “Dr. Phil”—let me bring in Paul Ginsberg real quick.  Before I play that tape again, what do you make of it, Paul?  

PAUL GINSBERG, PROFESSIONAL AUDIO LABORATORIES:  This is an example of the value that transcripts have at trial.  And I‘ve been through 1,700 trials and I always tell the investigating agents that it‘s very important to make a very accurate transcript.  And often times there are more than one version of a transcript differing exactly as in this case.  

ABRAMS:  But don‘t these tapes sound different to you?  

GINSBERG:  Well, the transcript can, in effect, pre-filter your mind.

ABRAMS:  Well that‘s right.  And that‘s why I just played those without a transcript so people could listen to them and so I could listen to it again.

ABRAMS:  I‘ve listened to these tens of times and I‘m hearing it again and every time I hear that tape from Aruba it sounds different to me than the tape from Jamie Skeeters.

GINSBERG:  But if we jumbled the tapes and played them in random order, I wonder whether you‘d be able to pick out which tape...

ABRAMS:  I would.

ABRAMS:  I would.

ABRAMS:  I mean—you know look I mean I can say I would but...

GINSBERG:  You might do it from the tonal quality because there is...

GINSBERG:  ... but other than that, as far as the words are concerned, I don‘t—I agree with the other gentleman in that I don‘t feel that there has been any tampering, physical or electronic tampering, however, it is a matter of interpretation with pre-filtering...

GINSBERG:  ... and suggesting.

ABRAMS:  Arlene, go ahead.  

ELLIS SCHIPPER:   Yes.  First of all, I am surprised that you could copy these from the hard disk of Mr. Skeeters because as far as we know he volunteered his hard disk to the FBI and it should be at the FBI‘s office to be checked because we have (INAUDIBLE) procedure that requested that.  That‘s one.  

Second, I don‘t understand how, no, she didn‘t and (INAUDIBLE) the court appointed forensic institute, this is not my conclusion.  I just am the spokesperson and...

ABRAMS:  Right.

ELLIS SCHIPPER:   ... I translate this to you and why we do this.  This is not because we want to plead Kalpoe free.  That‘s not the question here.  It is because for eight weeks we have been founded—this one—this tape (INAUDIBLE) because there was supposed to be a clear admission and all these accusations were made that the Aruban authorities were not acting upon this.  

First of all, you cannot arrest people upon footage of an entertainment show, so we sent it to the NFI to verify.  The results came back with the (INAUDIBLE) manipulation.  This is an official forensic...

ABRAMS:  But wait.  But let‘s be clear, Arlene...

ABRAMS:  Arlene look, manipulation, there is no question that they edited the tape.  OK, that they took things out, that they took out background...

KALPOE:  No, she didn‘t.  You‘d be surprised how simple it was that night.

ABRAMS:  No, she didn‘t.  Why the face?  I mean it sounds to me like saying no, she didn‘t on that tape.

PARTON:  Thing is Arlene is concerned that there is manipulation of the “Dr. Phil” or the Skeeters tape.  

ABRAMS:  Right.

PARTON:  The thing is the waveforms where we show the words coming down where she said she did, there was no—the waveform wasn‘t clipped.  It would have—if he said didn‘t, it would have shown a clipping there.  

It didn‘t.  It was tapered down...

ABRAMS:  So what‘s the explanation as to why this sounds different?  

PARTON:  I have none of why the Aruban tape is sounding differently other than you know when you transfer files over Internet you know there are compressions and decompressions and there is some degradation of the files that exist.

PARTON:  But she‘s concerned about what‘s happening on the live tapes in Aruba.  And that‘s what needs to be you know looked at and why—what specifically and not from the ear...

ABRAMS:  Yes.  Mr. Ginsberg, don‘t these sound different to you?  

GINSBERG:  Well I just wanted to say that there is a simple way to tell.  Because we can take in the laboratory and compare it to the microsecond...

ABRAMS:  Well they said they did that.

GINSBERG:  ... the different versions and see whether they track each other...

ABRAMS:  That‘s right.

GINSBERG:  ... from the beginning to the end.  

ABRAMS:  And that‘s Arlene‘s point is she says that they—that that was done in Holland and as a result of that particular analysis, they are convinced that the tape was manipulated.  

GINSBERG:  If there is tracking from the very beginning to the very end, then there was no manipulation.  It‘s as simple as that.  I truly believe that this is a matter of interpretation and suggestion.

GINSBERG:  Because you can hear it both ways.  

ABRAMS:  And Arlene, you don‘t—that‘s not the conclusion that they have come to in Holland, correct?  

ELLIS SCHIPPER:   No, it is not.  They specifically say the word manipulation and they state where it was manipulated, not edited.  As a matter of fact, they showed that the C.D. ROM sent by Mr. Skeeters because you keep on saying that this is the Aruban version.  This is a version provided by Mr. Skeeters...

ABRAMS:  The reason I‘m calling it the Aruban version, Arlene, is because the version that we got from Jamie Skeeters sounds different to me than the version we‘re getting from you.

ELLIS SCHIPPER:   Absolutely.  But the thing is that when you state Aruban version it is being altered again that if the Arubans are altering something.

ABRAMS:  I‘m not making any judgment about anything...

ELLIS SCHIPPER:   That is not the case.  

ABRAMS:  All I‘m saying is that the version I‘m getting from you is different than the version that I‘m hearing from Jamie Skeeters and it sounds different to me than the one that we heard on the “Dr. Phil” show.  

ELLIS SCHIPPER:   Absolutely and that is a strange thing.

Coupled with the fact that on Larry King, Dr. Phil said they were working with the FBI on everything they did to try to help Beth, IRRC, my guess is that the original hard drive has held up to FBI inspection.  JMO

Well, I don't know if it it Dr. Phil who will be making the call.
And the people who will be making the call, what would be their primary purpose ? Probably money. Phil has a show and a viewership where he can slay the Kalpoes without a court case. Not while it is before the court, but after. The persons who are on the Kalpoe side, they must be few and far between. And probaly not in the US.
Sometimes lawsuits do not determine right or wrong, fair or not.

TWITTY: There were two—I know of two young girls. One was 16 and one was 14 years of age, and it was difficult for these girls to do, but they did come forward. They had to hire an attorney. They gave statements to the police. You know, these were real girls that were coming forward.

We don't know what happened or what transpired, why that never went any further than it did. We don't know if it had something to do with—I was told that Dennis Jacobs (ph) had strongly—had talked to the girls and was really putting the pressure on them to retract this, so you know, we just don't know how far that some individuals in that police department were going to go to put a stop to those girls coming forward. But they were real girls and they had been assaulted by Joran under the influence of drugs.

VAN SUSTEREN: Tito, last night we had on the new lawyer for Natalee Holloway's family, who said that a young woman came to her office and said that she had been sexually assaulted by Joran. Are there other women or young women who have come forward? I mean, there seems to be a lot of people are talking a lot about it, but do you know specifically if this is fact?

TITO LACLE, ARUBA TODAY: This is fact, Greta. The lawyer for Joran van der Sloot did confirm yesterday that not one but several people had been interrogated, or he confirmed my story that I heard from my sources, and he confirmed that many people had come forward. He did not give a specific number. He did mention the States and Aruba, that this has happened, and based on that information, that they put this accusation on Joran van der Sloot yesterday.

The foregoing was posted by Takarasmama on CourtTV in Dec. 2006.  I brought it over because it was such a well done summary regarding Joran's (alleged) assaults on young women and I wanted to preserve it publicly.

Also that the Phil show could make a small settlement without damaging his reputation.
I am not naive enough to think the court case is about right or wrong,

I am watching it as well, Cat.  My DH and I were just discussing how the funeral plans start taking place as soon as the electoral votes are counted and are edited through the years but the basics remain the same from the date of the last vote being counted, and at latest when the inaugural plans are being formulated.

When my husband (ex) was in the AF we rented a home in Alexandria VA and I taught in Fairfax Co. VA. We lived at the bottom of a very large hill, all covered in daffofills, et al and the LR was on the second floor. I loved that home!

 The street was Old Dominiion Blvd just south of Glebe Rd and east of the highway that went N/S past the Pentagon.(Alexander VA side). We were told that Gerald Ford live at the top of the hill behind us. I really never paid much attention until now and just wondered. (Like working in the film industry, one just didn't ask too many questions.)

Do any of you know the address/street on which he live there? This would have been, at least when we were there, 1967-9.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the WWII memorial. I took the night tour to all of the memorials. It's the prettiest, most inspiring and respectful of them all, IMO. That was the first time I had ever taken a tour in DC, although I had been to most of the memorials in daytime.

It is a success story. These guys now have a clodhopper flavored milkshake at the Dairy Queen. I know there is a recipie on the net for these things. They are quite good. And Kosher to boot. I had the Canadian news on and our Prime Minister has not commented on Saddam yet. Our Foreign Affairs minister has and he said it was the Iraqui people who put Saddam on trail and carried out the sentence.

Seeing the Ford girls all grown up and looking a bit matronly reminds me how I am getting on in years.  Gosh, they were a fun loving lot of kids, real kids, normal kids and they added such a "lively" atmosphere to the White House.  Time is quickly passing.  Betty's fingers are but bones wrapped around the large arms of that general.  Ah.  I have seen too many state funerals and realize the bell tolls for all of us.

Kat, on that note, a friend called me today from whom I had not heard in a few years.  She reminded me of all the times we all used to make such great efforts to go out on New Year's while some of us made fools of ourselves, the rest of us watched and drove.  I am like you, I am not much tolerant of it any longer.

Might have to go to Sears and let them show me a thing or two. I have the instruction book, nothing about these freakin error messages.
I made a resolution that I would do no sewing except on the new thing.
It does lettering and all of those fancy stitches. It isn't one of those that downloads the patterns from the internet, then I would be in real big trouble.

My cousin who is really handy at about anything  :roll:  teaches computer courses at a junior college, and they offer a con-ed course on using these new sewing machines.  She took the course, and of course, she excelled. :roll:   She always does, according to the whole family, but that is beside the point.  She has made some beautiful things and monogrammed lots of stuff.  She even made me some monogrammed towels for Christmas in olde English with NOEL, NOEL, NMI, NOEL, NOEL.

Oh, I love the Martha Washington, Cat! They have a seafood buffet on Friday nights that's wonderful. The rooms are so much nicer than ordinary hotels. I usually get season tickets to the Barter theatre, and always have dinner at the Inn first. You'll have to come back this way again soon, wedding or not!  :wink:

It is a double which means it only has about 10 petals.  It is yellow in the interior and red around the edges.  It really looks great across the back of her white house with all the lush foliage and slate floors on the porch.

I just had a thought about Paulus, the key to the underground kitchen at the Wyndham that Deepak had, and Valentijns remarks about Natalee's purple/blue extremities.  Let's say that Natalee was in bad shape after J2K et al are through with her, but she's still alive.  Paulus decides to literally put Natalee on ice until he can decide what to do about her.  They would need lots of ice.  There is supposedly a female witness who lives near the Racquet Club who saw the Kalpoes car drive in & out of the RC that night.  Joran had some kind of apprenticeship there - maybe he had a key.  They could have also raided the Wyndham Hotel for ice.  Was it Aruba Girl's relative who saw the Kalpoe car heading toward Noord that night very late?

Ice, loss of oxygen through blood loss, as well as shallow breathing, and lowering blood pressure would all cause the darkening of the extremeties b/c of the decreased blood flow & decrease in oxygen carried by the blood to those extremeties.

What do you all think?  I think she was in the main house and Paulus made the willful decision to end her life.

I Finally went to Amazon, through the link on this page and bought the book Dave wrote. I know I am very late reading it, but better late than never. Obviously, there are things in there I am unaware of.

We frequently ponder why they went into so much detail or talked about something so much.  I think the investigators asked them to tell in as much detail as possible everything they could remember.  A witness would be asked the same.  It would be interesting to know what questions were asked; that would tell us what they thought was important.  Why did he keep mentioning the gym bag?  Because they kept asking him about it.  They had suspicions.

Telluride is one of my favorite, but it is tougher to get to.  The back side of Big Mountain is also great if you ever get Montana way.

Sleuth, the Koala reminds me of a Steve Irwin show.  He and Terri had relocated some Koalas, moving them in the back of their truck.  They had put tree branches and everything in the back to make them feel less stressed for the journey.  One big Koala was getting grumpy and causing trouble, so they put him in a carrier.  They got to the new location and Steve took the grumpy big Koala out of the carrier and put him on a tree branch in the new exhibit.  The Koala immediately peed on him.   :lol: Terri said the Koala was telling Steve "That's for putting me in a box."   :lol:

Oh!, I almost forgot! I'm always on the lookout for a logo that I think is visable on the shoes. It may be nothing, but this caught my eye, and wanted you guys to see it. There are thousands of varieties out there, and often the same manufacturer changes the shape/look of their logo from one shoe/shirt to another.

the road to the beach is a dirt road traversed by polis 4x4 . Ambulance brought Dr Brouwer who pronounced him dead.

The investigation is being conducted to see if foul play played a part in his death or if he drowned.

Authoritys later looked by helicopter to see if the victm had be moved by someone to the location where he was found near the natural bridge or if he was moved from his auto stationed near the beach.
