I saw this cartoon at the Drive IN .. when I was 4 or 5 yrs old. My Dad wanted to go so bad to see this. I didn't know... I was along for the ride. He was a car salesman and he could bring home any car off the lot. He brought home a station wagon. Yep a pea green family truckster.. with the wood side panels ..  it was brown though. We packed up the station wagon with Kentucky Fried Chicken, pillows, blankets and tons of Faygo soda pop.  We went and my Dad moved the car ... omg 3 or 4 times ..till he could find a speaker that worked loud enough. Omg those were the days ..

If I remember correct - was Bambi and Song of the South. I was wiped out near the end of Bambi - I cried at Bambi and fell asleep till my Dad woke me up and said
" Sugar Baby" poking me over the front seat.. to wake up .. Watch this and listen and it was Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah
Which just dawned on me, after watching that. When I went to the Florist to pick out my Dad's flowers Green Eyes .. I was the only one in this small shoppe. I came in about 30 mins to close. Not on purpose. It was a small local florist. I walked in ( I think it was, I know it to be, I was in shock, I didn't want to be there) So I glanced around the shoppe acting like .. I was invisible. I found these Blue Birds made of ceramic. They were glazed in the most perfect blue .. and brown.
I had both of them clutched to my chest with all intent of buying them. This man was keeping his distance ..yet was well aware I was in his store. He said can I help you? And I just fell apart. OMG I fell into a million pieces within my face and emotions and didn't really say anything, I don't think I even uttered a word.  He knew. He said Why don't we sit down. He said to me " I will let you talk and tell me" He said we can sit here for as long as you want. His name was Mike. I was given his name/his florist company name from the Local VFW Hall.  Where I had my Dad's memorial planned after his funeral. The entire time we sat together .. I was clutching these two blue birds as if they were sacred. I could not let go of them. Come to find out that Mike was a veteran like my Dad. Their is a kinship that cannot be broken within Brothers. Mike too belonged as member of that same VFW hall. I was scrambled eggs picking out flowers .. but I had my own thoughts and wishes. Mike said " I will make your wishes within our flowers" I will make sure of it myself, he said I will hand deliver them.  He then said to me after a long exhausting flower exchange of thoughts ..   "Those Blue Birds you have " Take them home. A gift for You from Me. I took the blue birds to the funeral home and placed them inside my Dad's flowers.  I have them now on my window sill within my kitchen. I see them ten times a day. I see them and I feel Love. When I was a little girl .. I was a Bluebird. They were in the day ..before being a Brownie or a Girls Scout. My Dad would always say .. My Little Blue Bird, my Morning Glory.. My Sweet Baby.  Words sweeter than any song .. If I could only hear them again.  * Thank You GE.  I am thinking of you and your family. This month of June 2010 has been filled with " huge emotions/love/loss/feelings" that typing .. cannot express -All of Us have felt it personally.  And its' all too surreal.

For my Daddy - This is the song within a CD that I played for him during his Funeral.
Its not SAD .. not at all. Sometimes I just listen to it. Because It reminds me so of my Dad. ( My Dad's younger brother heard the song in the funeral home and you could not wipe the smile off his face.. He trying to not cry - but was beaming huge.. He said to me " I know you are responsible for this" and he hugged me real hard .. He said This is SO my Brother )  ... For my Dad on Father's Day

Thank you for the video and sharing your story about your dad and the blue Birds. I do know how hard it is when we lose a parent we are so close to. My dads been gone for 16 this last April. The first couple of years were the hardest for me. I had lost my mom many years before that. So even with my siblings and husband and children I felt like an orphan. Like I didn't have any body left in my corner. I miss them both but over time it got easier to make it though the holidays and remember the good times we had.

I really disliked when people would say in time it will get better. I felt like what do they know. But as I have gotten older it has. I send you prayers it does for you too. I am very blessed because I have a wonderful family to see me thru all of it.

Hugs and kisses back at you. Remember your dad is always with you. I still talk to mine just about every day. Because in my heart I know he and my mom are with me and always will be. Get some rest and think about all the wonderful times you had with your dad. Remember how blessed you were to have him with you as long as you did. Sweet Dreams and God Bless

Hey Monkeys, I have a question I think, well, I know someone can help with.  We have a colleague at work who died suddenly June 22.  Management is not releasing details but he was my FB friend and from the comments there, I've been able to determine that he took his own life, which is what I thought.  Can I run the facts by you to see what you think?

Back in maybe 07-08 we got a new forum here at SM.

Musing was created at that time so folks would have a place to go and chit chat about anything. That way the Natalee Holloway thread was kept just about her. Then many missing persons cases were added.

Red started the SM forum in 05.

Klaas I think I got that about right.

The SM forum was created around June 13, 2005 in the early days of the Natalee Holloway case.  There were getting to be too many posts on the front page and we needed more area to research and "sleuth".

The main SM.com blog was started I believe in late 2004 and made news beginning with the Terry Sciavo case in Florida.  When the NH case broke, Red (who at one time lived and worked in Aruba) started covering the case and even went along with Texas Equusearch and searched for Natalee (late July 2005)

In 2006 (I think) we went to a new forum software and everyone had to re-register.  It was some time after that RED decided we needed a "Musings' area to chit chat in.  We tried a chat room for a while but that because a stability and security issue so we closed it.

The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in the New York Times.

By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have elapsed between his presenting the check and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honor it.  I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my entire pension, an arrangement which, I admit, has been in place for only eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account $30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally answer your telephone calls and letters, --- when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the  impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become.   

From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person. My mortgage and loan repayments will therefore and hereafter no  longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank, by check, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate. Be aware that it is an offense under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope.  Please find attached an Application Contact which I require your chosen employee to complete.  I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative.

Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Notary Public, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.

If I were in the area, I'd definitely come by Edward.  The food sounds delicious.  But you wouldn't need to entice with free food.  I wouldn't mind at all buying from the scouts for their fundraiser.  My son's troop used to sell firewood.  Many in our town would buy their firewood exclusively from the troop, since it was an annual event.  Good luck and I hope your Boy Scout troop has a successful fundraiser.

I have a great new recipe(for me) for you all to try today if you want, it's quick & easy & perfect for the 4th. I couldn't believe how good it is!!

Hallelujah Coleslaw

I bag shredded (angel hair) cabbage
1 pkg. oriental ramen noodles
1/4 c sunflower seed kernals
1 c slivered almonds
2 green onions(sliced very thin)
toss this together


for sauce:
3 tbsp vinegar
1/3 c veg. oil
 2 tbsp sugar
ramen seasoning packet
pinch of red pepper flakes
salt & black pepper to taste

whisk all the sauce ingredients together & add to cabbage mix tossing well. That's it! and it's delicious!!! and no mayo to worry about!!!
Try it you'll like it :)

I do want to add: do not cook the noodles, just crunch them up really well & mix them with the cabbage, you'll never know they're in there! you can use other flavors of noodles if you want, it will change the flavor a little.

Police in Louisiana, Mo., have issued an Amber Alert for Alisa Maier, 4, who disappeared tonight.

Alisa was playing in her front yard with her brother when a black four- door passenger car pulled up and took the child from the yard about 8 p.m., according to police.

Alisa is white with brown hair and brown eyes and 3 feet tall. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts.

The only description of the driver of the car was that he was a young white man with dark hair.

Anyone with information about the abduction is asked to call the Louisiana Police Department at 573-754-4021.

Louisiana is on the Mississippi River, about 80 miles north of St. Louis.

How to get rid of Gnats: 

The most popular home remedy is the vinegar bottle trap. Fill a bottle almost till the top with vinegar and close it. Poke several holes inside the cap and place it at a strategic corner or a place where you think the gnats are breeding.

Gnats are attracted to the smell of vinegar; they will climb into the bottle through the holes but won’t be able to climb out. This method is very effective and you can place many such traps in the house.
In a bowl, mix some vinegar with a little bit of dish soap. The vinegar will attract the gnats and they will climb into the bowl. The dish soap will cease friction and even if the gnats try to wriggle out, they will keep slipping inside.

Look out for over-watered indoor plants, or other moist corners around the house. Disinfect them as they may have the eggs of gnats. Spray generous amounts of ‘Gnatrol’ or any such disinfectant / chemical agent that is meant exclusively for getting rid of gnats.

Another way is to place a rotten fruit on a plate at the window sill or just outside the door. The gnats will get attracted by the smell of food and you can dispose them off in bulk

Want you to know we lived in Royal Oak, Michigan for a year,way back when. We needed to be close to Henry Ford Hospital. I still remember the winter and the wind. Had to hold onto the buildings to turn the corner. I know you know what I am talking about. LOL

Sorry Deenie, I don't know. These bands are from my childrens era. Mine was Elvis. I found Family Jewels though and loved it. You are right, I think that everyone in that family is very intellegent.

Crowds of friends search for missing man
Man's car turned up at area park Thursday

LENEXA, Kansas - A Johnson County man has been missing since Thursday afternoon.

Friday from 3:30 until almost dark, friends and family searched part of Shawnee Mission Park. The search resumed Saturday morning, as the group mapped out their next search areas.

They searched wooded areas, and swarmed across fields on the west side of the park.

They searched for clues about what happened to Larry Schnackenberg, a father of five who was last seen around 12:30pm Thursday.

He was supposed to have picked up a son for a dentist's appointment, but didn't show up.

"Larry's just a terrific family man and this just doesn't make sense, it's not right. And if it were me, he'd be the first one in line to come and look," said Ellen Norburg.

She's known Larry for 20 years.

She's gotten bloody scratches from scrambling through the thick brush.

"I was out here earlier and I thought, how would anyone ever go through this," Norburg added.

Many of the 500 searchers are students and parents from Shawnee Mission West high school, where Schnackenberg's children attended.

Friends say his youngest child is still a student there.

Lindsey Potter is among those who also helped search three summers ago when Kelsey Smith, a West student, disappeared.

She had been kidnapped and killed.

"It's just kind of heartbreaking, twice around the same time of year," said Potter.

Now Kelsey's parents are helping organize this search.

Larry's car was found by shelter house number eight, near a hiking trail.

Schnackenberg's family says his car was found around 6:30 p.m. Thursday with his ID, wallet, and cell phone in the car.

Police searched the area for several hours near his car.

Then the volunteer effort took over.

"Maybe we can find something that will help the police, maybe we even find Larry. That's the bottom line. Maybe he's out here wandering around, maybe he's hurt," said Greg Smith, Kelsey's father.

Kelsey's army has become Larry's army.

Friends worry.

They say the disappearance is out of character for a stable family man who was looking forward to celebrating his daughter's wedding next weekend.

Smith says they found some cell phones, clothing and sunglasses, but have no idea whether those are helpful clues.

The items have been turned over to police.

The search starts up again Saturday morning at 9:30 at shelter house eight in Shawnee Mission Park.

Bring plenty of sunscreen, water and bug spray.

Volunteers are also being asked to bring extra ice and fruit like oranges and grapes.

Friends and family have also established a Facebook group to help spread the word about  Schnackenberg's disappearance.

Schnackenberg is described as a 58-year-old white male, about 6 foot 1 and 225 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white polo shirt and tan shorts.

Hey all, Thank you for the prayers, i came home to get a shower & make some calls. I feel like I've been on another planet!! The heart catherization came out fine; no blockages, but he does have slight pulmonary hypertension so they did a cat scan this morn. We  are waiting for the results. If there is a clot they will treat it with meds. They also are looking at thyroid now. One of his thyroid levels was really low. He has a family history of thyroid so it's very possible, all the same symptoms. So much better than the alternative!! BBL Love you all!  ::MonkeyAngel::

I wanted to share a giggle with you guys. I woke up just before sunrise this morning and went to put on some coffee. By the time I had washed my face and brushed my teeth, it was daylight and I figured the coffee was ready. I went in to the kitchen, poured a cup, and leaned across the kitchen counter to check out the day. These guys were looking back at me. LOL! (far left through the window in the first one, and the second is after I walked over to the love seat and sat down). There were 5 in all but they were too spread out to get them all, and they were suspicious of the flash from the camera, so I left it at these.

I love it CBB.  My guess is this is something not unusual for you to see in your yard?  We have deer in the corn field across from our house and they come into our back yard and eat the apples off our apple trees.  One branch used to be loaded with apples but now they have dragged the branches down onto the ground and most the apples are gone.  I have to say you are living in "God's Country".  Beautiful.

No, it's not unusual at all. It was unusual that the camera was on the kitchen counter. These guys were checking out a pear tree on that side of the back yard, but I've fed deer from the deck. I don't do it anymore because my dog goes nuts when they wait at the back door! LOL! They're darn complacent too! I drive s-l-o-w-l-y once I get in the neighborhood, because encountering a herd (if that's the right word?) crossing the road is a daily occurance, and they just look at you and expect you to stop! I'm still seeing babies with the white spots, which is a little unusual this time of year. Maybe it's going to be a late winter?

Hey Miss Bear! A raccoon in the morning would have alarmed me! Those little critters are only supposed to be out at night! A bear would have alarmed me anytime of day! There has been the occasional bear in the area, and in the neighborhood but I've never seen one, and I don't want to!

Hey All! I'm so glad to have my hubby home! It is his thyroid. Diagnosis: high output heart failure due to unknown hyperthyroidism!!  ::MonkeyEek:: If he had not come in when he did he would have gone into thyroid storm which could be fatal! He is on high doses of anti-thyroid meds & inderal to lower his heart rate( it was sustaining 150+ beats per minute) We will go back to the Dr. tues to see where to go from here. i know it will involve a trip to an Endocrinologist in Jackson. Anyway. we are soooo thankful that this is very treatable & thank you all for being concerned, I love you all!!!  ::MonkeyKiss:: Now I have to catch up on Caylee, Natalee, & Kyron's threads!!

DIY: Make your own household cleaners

Almost a month ago I ordered gifts from a wedding registry with Macy*s online and requested a gift box for the fee.  The two items arrived in a tall box within a week, but since the bridal shower wasn't until this weekend, I stored the big box thinking it would protect the gift box until now. 

Last night I decided to check out the gift box and found that whoever picked my order just packed the two boxes..as is, under a gazillion packing peanuts...no gift box!!  I was disappointed in myself for not checking it out sooner because I was out for a bit yesterday and purchased a card to accompany the gifts and could have also picked up either wrapping paper or gift bags at that time.  Thankfully, I have a couple of days to find something.

I just got off the phone with customer service and will now be awaiting my refund for the gift box AND also the shipping!!   I'm a happy camper!    ::MonkeyCool::

ACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There is a potentially dangerous bacteria circulating in Jacksonville that parents need to know about.

The Duval County Health Department said there has been a spike in whooping cough cases.

If contracted, it can lead to severe coughing that prevents a child from breathing.

Six infants have died this year in California from whooping cough in what's considered the largest outbreak in more than 50 years in the state.

So how can you protect your family from the highly contagious disease?

It takes just one cough or sneeze to spread the bacteria, and young children are most susceptible.

The only real way to protect children is to have them vaccinated with a DTaP shot, which is a combination vaccine of diptheria, tetanus and pertussis. Pertussis is the medical name for whooping cough.

Dr. Jeremy Harris said the problem with catching it early is that symptoms are often confused at first with those of a common cold.

"Low-grade fever, little bitty cough," Harris said. "A little bitty cough lasts one to two weeks and you can't tell the difference. Then the cough gets worse. Two weeks more and then it gets really bad. The kids turn red. They may even turn purple."

The Duval County Health Department said the spike in cases it has seen involves babies too young to get the vaccine or those who have not received all their doses.

Infants typically get their first DTaP shot at 6 weeks old, but they're not completely protected until they've had the first three series of the vaccine, typically by 6 months of age.

Health workers insist the vaccine is safe and absolutely necessary to protect children from a potentially fatal bacteria.

Adults have to be just as vigilant about vaccinating themselves. The vaccine wears off after time, which means many teenagers and adults are not protected, so they can bring it home to a sibling or baby.

MEXICO, Mo. (AP) -- Health officials have identified six cases of whooping cough among a northeast Missouri Amish community in the past week.

The first Audrain County case was diagnosed July 23 and the other five were confirmed the next day. Whooping cough, or pertussis, has symptoms that are similar to a common cold and can be highly contagious.

Health officials say about one-fourth of the 82 pertussis cases reported over the past month in Missouri involve children less than a year old.

They say the best way to avoid whooping cough is to be vaccinated against the disease, which can cause severe illness or even death if left untreated.

Even though the work is only a first stab at analyzing audio recordings for signs of autism, it can correctly identify more than 85 percent of autistic and nonautistic children.

"We had no idea that this was possible," Kim Oller of the University of Memphis, head of the research team behind the study, told AOL News. "It's very surprising that you can use a totally objective system and get this much information so quickly."

The finding could eventually help doctors diagnose autism early in a child's life. Early diagnosis is crucial, because the earlier autistic children start intensive therapy, the more they improve.

If the computer program proves itself, "it would be very helpful to have an automated way to screen for autism," said Geraldine Dawson, a top autism researcher and the chief scientific officer for Autism Speaks, a science and advocacy group.

Autism is an often-devastating disorder that is being diagnosed in a growing number of children. One in 110 kids in the United States has autism or a related disorder, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children with full-blown autism have trouble communicating and relating to others. Many autistic kids, even as babies, avoid making eye contact. They may flap their hands and obsessively line up their toys rather than playing with them.

Scientists have known for decades that autistic children show early problems in their speech, but there's tremendous variety in how such toddlers distort their babbling, Oller said. That has made it difficult to use speech problems to help diagnose autism.

Oller and his colleagues tucked miniature voice recorders -- each roughly the weight of a candy bar -- into the chest pockets of more than 200 children ages 10 months to 4 years. The team then recorded everything that came out of the kids' mouths over six to eight days, for roughly 12 hours each day. The computer software filtered out crying, sneezes and coughs and focused on the sounds that resembled syllables.

All children mangle their syllables while learning to talk. But the scientists discovered that autistic children tended to do so far longer than normal children, making it easy for the software to pick out the autistic kids' voices.

The current gold standard for diagnosing autism is a long observation session by a medical specialist who watches a child and tallies up activities characteristic of autism.

The computer program "is the first kind of system that's totally objective," Oller said. "I don't know of any other system that doesn't involve judgments being made by people."

He doesn't think his program alone, even when perfected, should be used to declare that a child is autistic. But audio analysis "could be used very effectively" as a tool for screening children whose parents are worried about their development, he said.

Dawson agrees, saying automated voice analysis could help "improve our ability to identify infants who are at risk." Such a tool could also be useful in countries where autism specialists are in short supply, she said.

The study is being published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Several of the authors were paid consultants to a for-profit company that developed the recorder and computer program. The company was turned into a nonprofit foundation in 2009. Oller said the consulting fees had no influence on his research and that he stopped accepting them when he decided to write this paper.

yes...a good idea...if we were vaccinated as children, they are saying that it may have "worn off" and that we need to be revaccinated..I had to get a new vaccination when my grand babies got the whooping cough weeks ago..We all had to be treated with an antibiotic as well! everyone who had contact with the children had to be treated..including the 23 month old's entire day care center!

The Hotel Bill

My wife and I are traveling by car from Victoria to Prince George . Being Seniors, after almost eleven hours on the road, we were too tired to continue, and decided to take a room. But, we only planned to sleep for four hours and then get back on the road. When we checked out four hours later, the desk clerk handed us a bill for $350.00.

I explode and demanded to know why the charge is so high. I told the clerk although it's a nice hotel; the rooms certainly aren't worth $350.00 for four hours.  Then the clerk tells me that $350.00 is the 'standard rate'. I insisted on speaking to the Manager.

The Manager appears, listens to me, and then explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference centre that were available for us to use. 'But we didn't use them," I said, ''Well, they are here, and you could have," explained the Manager.

He went on to explain that we could also have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel is famous. "We have the best entertainers from New York , Hollywood , and Las Vegas perform here," the Manager says.

"But we didn't go to any of those shows," I said. "Well, we have them, and you could have," the Manager replied.

No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, I  replied, "But we didn't use it!"

The Manager is unmoved, and eventually I gave up and agreed to pay.

I wrote a check and gave it to the Manager.

The Manager is surprised when he looks at the check. "But sir, this check is only made out for $50.00." ''That's correct. I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with my wife," I replied.

"But I didn't!" exclaims the Manager.

I said, "Well, too bad,  she was here, and you could have."

I apologize for leaving so abruptly.  Neighbours dropped in for a quick visit.  The yak over a cuppa tea and goodies they brought was enjoyable.

Son and wife just returned from a four day stay in Alabama.  Hosts show them a great time.  Lots of fresh seafood and one beautiful beach.  Those two spoiled brats were flown over to New Orleans in a private twin engine plane compliments of their hosts.  This is where they spent the last two days of their trip.  Gumbo and Po Boys were where it was at for two meals.  I wished they had brought me home a couple of oil balls from the beach as a historical souvenier.  It appears that the oil spill has created a tourist industry all of its own.  The hotels were full.

The heat kinda got to them but ... the people of the Gulf region ... especially Alabama ... imply there will be a return trip to the region.

Blue Moon ... do the research that Ono suggests and ... then continue your yearly tradition.

Senior space agency scientists believe the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

In a new warning, Nasa said the super storm would hit like “a bolt of lightning” and could cause catastrophic consequences for the world’s health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken.

Scientists believe it could damage everything from emergency services’ systems, hospital equipment, banking systems and air traffic control devices, through to “everyday” items such as home computers, iPods and Sat Navs.

Due to humans’ heavy reliance on electronic devices, which are sensitive to magnetic energy, the storm could leave a multi-billion pound damage bill and “potentially devastating” problems for governments.

“We know it is coming but we don’t know how bad it is going to be,” Dr Richard Fisher, the director of Nasa's Heliophysics division, said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

“It will disrupt communication devices such as satellites and car navigations, air travel, the banking system, our computers, everything that is electronic. It will cause major problems for the world.

“Large areas will be without electricity power and to repair that damage will be hard as that takes time.”

Dr Fisher added: “Systems will just not work. The flares change the magnetic field on the earth that is rapid and like a lightning bolt. That is the solar affect.”

A “space weather” conference in Washington DC last week, attended by Nasa scientists, policy-makers, researchers and government officials, was told of similar warnings.

While scientists have previously told of the dangers of the storm, Dr Fisher’s comments are the most comprehensive warnings from Nasa to date.

Dr Fisher, 69, said the storm, which will cause the Sun to reach temperatures of more than 10,000 F (5500C), occurred only a few times over a person’s life.

Every 22 years the Sun’s magnetic energy cycle peaks while the number of sun spots – or flares – hits a maximum level every 11 years.

Dr Fisher, a Nasa scientist for 20 years, said these two events would combine in 2013 to produce huge levels of radiation.

He said large swathes of the world could face being without power for several months, although he admitted that was unlikely.

A more likely scenario was that large areas, including northern Europe and Britain which have “fragile” power grids, would be without power and access to electronic devices for hours, possibly even days.

He said preparations were similar to those in a hurricane season, where authorities knew a problem was imminent but did not know how serious it would be.

“I think the issue is now that modern society is so dependant on electronics, mobile phones and satellites, much more so than the last time this occurred,” he said.

“There is a severe economic impact from this. We take it very seriously. The economic impact could be like a large, major hurricane or storm.”

The National Academy of Sciences warned two years ago that power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications could “all be knocked out by intense solar activity”.

It warned a powerful solar storm could cause “twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina”. That storm devastated New Orleans in 2005 and left an estimated damage bill of more than $125bn (£85bn).

Dr Fisher said precautions could be taken including creating back up systems for hospitals and power grids and allow development on satellite “safe modes”.

“If you know that a hazard is coming … and you have time enough to prepare and take precautions, then you can avoid trouble,” he added.

His division, a department of the Science Mission Directorate at Nasa headquarters in Washington DC, which investigates the Sun’s influence on the earth, uses dozens of satellites to study the threat.

The government has said it was aware of the threat and “contingency plans were in place” to cope with the fall out from such a storm.

These included allowing for certain transformers at the edge of the National Grid to be temporarily switched off and to improve voltage levels throughout the network.

The National Risk Register, established in 2008 to identify different dangers to Britain, also has “comprehensive” plans on how to handle a complete outage of electricity supplies.

 MOSCOW — The parasailing donkey will never fly again and can look ahead to a life of luxury.

The female donkey Anapka arrived in Moscow on Wednesday after her brays of terror over a southern Russian beach last month prompted a British newspaper to step in and buy her.

A recreation company had sent Anapka up into the sky for about 30 minutes for a promotional stunt and the YouTube video of her trip made headlines around the world. Upset readers of the The Sun had urged the newspaper to rescue her.

"Our readers were deeply moved," Sun correspondent Garry O'Shea told the Associated Press. "We were contacted by thousands of readers. They wanted us to ensure the well-being of this animal."

Anapka traveled from her small town by the Azov Sea to the Kremlin riding school outside Moscow, where her arrival was filmed by news cameras. The donkey was quickly surrounded by reporters and onlookers eager to stroke her.

The riding school's chief veterinarian, Arina Stepanova, said the 17-year-old donkey was tired after her journey but showed no signs of serious illness.

Her new owners, meanwhile, are reviewing different options for a new home.

Harry Redknapp, coach of England's Tottenham Hotspur football club, has volunteered to shelter the donkey in an animal sanctuary he is opening in Hampshire, O'Shea said.

The Sun also has received numerous offers to adopt Anapka, he said.

Me too!  It really burns my butt when anybody or any animal is taken advantage of and is helpless to do anything about it.  I would not have blamed the animal for taking a bite out of the person who did this, then the poor animal would have been in trouble for defending itself.

My former co-worker's nephew was diagnosed with autism eight years ago when he was two.  Up until he was 11 months old ... his development was progressing normally.  Within a very short period of time following a high fever related to immunization shots ... he began to noticable regress.  It is all documented on dated home videos.

I would assume that this young man's mother who has spent countless hours on her own and with other Moms over the years researching the possible underlying cause of this disorder has looked into comparative studies between groups who do not vaccinate their children and ... the general population who do.

My interest in the autism spectrum has a foundation in my almost 11 year old grandson who was diagnosed with ADD at an early age.  There is no defining moment that symptoms began to manifest themselves.  My daughter and SIL made the decision that meds would only be given to him as a last resort.  I believe they made the right decision.  Today ... in environments that have few distractions or ... when engaged in a one on one conversation ... he functions normally ... there are no obvious symptoms.  When he is placed in distracting environments ... he applies the coping strategies that he has been taught and learned over the years.  For the most part ... there are no issues.  Thankfully ... my grandson is not defiant.  If his actions are inappropriate ... as with his siblings ... "the look" will usually suffice.  At the most ... addressing him sternly using his full name ... may be required to bring him back to task.  However ... the same goes for his siblings.

I was so angry about the cruelty to this donk I was just sick.I have 4 rescue donks and the one 2nd from the right in my avi was used for local rodeos and for practice in roping contests.They put them in a chute with riders on horseback with lassos and chased him down,roped him and hogtied him over and over again for a full year. His legs were terribly scarred and he was terrified of people. They use donks because they don't want to chance breaking a leg or injuring a calf because they are a source of income..donks are just shot  and buried because they are cheap and of no financial value. It took two years to have him come to us and take a treat or let us groom or pet him. Now he is just a love and he is not a throwaway animal...sorry for the rant.

Ono, arrived today in Gulf Shores, HOT, HOT, HOT.  Is not crowded at all here.  I sure hope they recover fast.  The beach is clean and pretty as always and the water is clear also.  We got a condo, good deal, paid for 5 nights, they gave us the 6th night free and then reduced the overall bill by 20%.  We went to LuLu's to eat and this time we got in.  It was good, we both had the shrimp.  We are still alive.  I really hate what BP has done to this area.  We are staying for a week and do not plan on doing much. Tomorrow is suppose to be 101 degrees so it will be too hot to even walk on the sand without shoes.  I love this place and always have.  I just hope they overcome this and thrive in the future.

There's a reason that one of the surest signs of adult criminal maladjustment is cruelty to animals as a child. The adults who did this to that poor animal show a total inability to feel empathy, and that's scarey for any living thing crossing their paths. I think they should be charged and should serve jail time!

I have no idea where to post this but.....   A friend of mine has a gentleman staying in the home where her kids are living with their father.  He seems kinda like a con man and shady. However, this is my speculation.  He could be a great guy.  I do not know how you guys perform your searches, but I was wondering if someone could research the guy for me.

Mainly want to know of crimes and or abuse to children.  I worry for her kids.

Is anybody else having problems with the heat?? It's been SO hot and humid and we've been having heat storms in the late afternoon. My internet went down yesterday and just came back a couple of hours ago. Apparently it was just a pocket, because work was OK, and my son's was only down for a couple of hours. Monday, lightening got the router at work and I had to call the tech guy. I was terrified it was the server, but thankfully not!

My car said it was 99* on the way home from work when a sudden storm came through. Within a mile, the temp dropped to 88* and was back up to 98* by the time I got home.   ::MonkeyConfused:: I walked out of the office and honestly, it felt like I was walking into a steam bath.

I can tell a huge difference in trying to just breathe outside! It's like trying to inhale water! We're going to have to grow gills if this keeps up!   :nemo:

Any time you need someone to confrim what a wonderful son you have raised just let me know.  But the second guessing is from being a concerned caring parent is all about. You always wonder if you have done the right thing.  This is truly one of those things that only time will tell. I can't tell you how many times I wondered if I had done the right thing with my kids or said the right thing. I made mistakes everybody does. They all turned out to be caring adults and pretty wonderful. Just keep doing what your heart tells you.

Bearly........ at the end of the day, and at the end of all our days, we'll finally have our priorities straight. Most of us, me included, get through a day at a time just trying to do the things that are in front of us that require doing for survival. You seem to always have the right prospective that comes from seeing the whole picture, and you, my dear, being brighter than the av-er-age bear, have your priorities straight right now. Being the parent your child needs is an eternal accomplishment and you're doing a great job. The mistakes can be just as valuable as what you're satisfied with. How else can we teach our kids how to view failure, how to say "I'm sorry", and how to change course? Their life will be full of those things regardless how hard we try!

You're a good Mama Bear, and your Cub is going to be just fine because of it!   ::rhino::

CDC: Fruit pulp linked to rare US typhoid cases

ATLANTA — A rare U.S. outbreak of typhoid fever has been linked to a frozen tropical fruit product used to make smoothies, health officials reported Thursday.

Seven cases have been confirmed — three in California and four in Nevada. Two more California cases are being investigated. Five people were hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The CDC said five of the victims drank milkshakes or smoothies made with frozen mamey (ma-MAY') fruit pulp. Four of them used pulp sold by Goya Foods Inc. of Secaucus, N.J.

Mamey is a sweet, reddish tropical fruit grown mainly in Central and South America. It is also known as zapote or sapote. It is peeled and mashed to make pulp, the CDC said.

The company has recalled packages of the pulp, sold in mostly western states. A sample from one package found in Las Vegas tested positive for the bacteria that causes typhoid, the Food and Drug Administration reported Wednesday.

A phone call to Goya seeking comment was not immediately returned Thursday.

No other food was linked to the illnesses, which occurred between April and July. The victims range in age from 4 to 31, said CDC spokeswoman Arleen Porcell-Pharr.

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening illness caused by a type of bacteria called Salmonella typhi. It's become rare in the United States. There are only about 400 cases annually, and most people caught it while traveling abroad.

Three food-related outbreaks have been reported in the last 12 years. One, also linked to frozen mamey pulp, caused three illnesses in Florida in 1999. One, linked to Gulf Coast oysters, sickened six in Texas in 2006. The third, linked to a Maryland restaurant, caused four illnesses.

Symptoms include a sustained fever as high as 103 to 104 degrees, along with headache. weakness, stomach pains or loss of appetite. Some patients have a rash of flat, rose-colored spots. It can be treated with antibiotics.

It's not clear if there will be additional cases, said Dr. Ezra Barzilay, the CDC epidemiologist supervising the investigation. It can take between three days to eight weeks for an infected person to develop symptoms, he noted.

The disease is still common in the developing world. The bacteria passes through the intestinal tract and often spreads to others through feces-tainted food or water. Freezing does not kill it.

The recalled mamey pulp was sold in 14-ounce plastic packages in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.

It's funny that you talk about mistakes, CBB.  We always do because my son is so hard on himself for making one.  I blame the one on one teaching because every mistake is pointed out, but that is another story.

The one night we were talking about a mistake he made, he brought it up, he said he said he made a mistake and it was embarrassing (he brought this up on his own).  He said, you know if I had the chance to take my mistakes back, I wouldn't.  I asked him why.  He said because then I would never learn anything. 

It must be getting through.
