Amber Alert: Girl Thought To Be With Murder Suspect

   posted 8:22 am Mon January 25, 2010 - Geronimo
from NewsChannel 8 - http://www.ktul.com/news/stories/0110/699279.html

Police are asking for help in locating an 8-year-old girl thought to have been taken by a suspect in the murder of the girl's mother.

Aja Johnson was kidnapped after her mother was found shot to death late Sunday night at her home in Geronimo. That's in Comanche County, about 180 miles southwest of Tulsa.

Authorities believe the child is with 46-year-old Lester Hobbs, who is wanted for questioning in the homicide case. Authorities say the child has a health condition which requires daily medication.

Hobbs is a white male, about 5'9" and 180 pounds. He has several tattoos and was last seen driving a white, 1992 Toyota Paseo with Oklahoma tag 577-BPW. The back window of the vehicle has been replaced by a piece of sheet metal.

Aja is a white female, about four feet tall and 65 pounds with a very thin build. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

Officials say Hobbs may be headed toward Davenport, which is located in Lincoln County, about 55 miles west of Tulsa.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the vehicle, Hobbs or the girl should immediately dial 911.

Hobbs should be considered armed and dangerous. He has several previous convictions for burglary, assault and DUI. Court records in Lincoln County indicate a protective order was sought against Hobbs last August, but authorities could not locate him and the matter was dropped two weeks later.
Edit to correct name.  There seemed to be some initial confusion in regard to Aja's last name.  MB
Edit to cancel amber alert as of 1/29/10 and put age to 7 - Nut

I heard the Amber Alert for Aja Jotson on the car radio this afternoon.  I heard it twice in less than 45 minutes. Additional information I heard other than what is reported here is, Lester Hobbs may be headed to Rockport, Texas.  And her age was reported as 7 years, instead of 8 years old, which is a minor detail.

I am wondering if Lester Hobbs might be trying to change vehicles, because if the rear window of his car has been replaced with sheet metal, that would make it much easier to find.  I'm hoping Aja Jotson can be found soon.   ::MonkeyAngel::

Comanche County Mother Dead, Girl Missing
KAUZ News

We've just received new information of a possible sighting in the amber alert we've been following for you all day. The Texas Department of Public Safety says Lester William Hobbs and seven year old Asa Johnson were seen this afternoon in Brady, Texas. That's between Austin and San Angelo. Officials believe he may be heading to Rockport, which is in far south Texas. It's only a few hours from the US-Mexico border.

Seven year old Aja Daniell Johnson is who police are looking for. They want to know if she is safe tonight and where she is.

Late last night police discovered the dead body of the girl's mother, Tonya Hobbs, inside an RV which she and this man, Lester William Hobbs were staying along with Aja Johnson. It has the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation treating Hobbs as a person of interest and they believe he and the seven year old girl are possibly together.

Richard Goss with the the OSBI said, "Right now we know they were driving a 1992 Toyota Paseo. The car has been described as white in color. It should have Oklahoma license plates 577-BPW."
We're told the car also has no hubcaps and the passenger side window is broken and has plastic covering it. Officials are not sure where Lester Hobbs is heading but they do have a few ideas.

OSBI Spokesperson Jessica Brown told KAUZ News At Noon, "We believe they could be headed to Texas, Oregon or California in those three places because Mr. Hobbs has relatives in all three of those places. We just don't know where he's headed at this time. He's a transient and he really doesn't haven't ties except for those relatives in California, Oregon and Texas."

In the last briefing in Comanche County. Officials announced that a federal arrest warrant had been issued for Lester Hobbs on a failure to appear in court in Lincoln county for a DUI. That means if he's pulled over in another state he will be detained, and hopeful find Asa Johnson.

Okla. Man Accused of Killing Wife, Kidnapping Girl

A woman found beaten to death in a motor home recently sought a protective order against her estranged husband, an ex-convict who was charged Tuesday with killing her and kidnapping her 7-year-old daughter.

Comanche County prosecutors charged Lester William Hobbs, 46, with first-degree murder and kidnapping in the killing of Tonya Hobbs and disappearance of her daughter, Aja Daniell Johnson.

Hobbs' body was discovered Sunday inside Lester Hobbs' motor home in Geronimo, a small town about 100 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. Lester Hobbs and the missing girl, who is not his biological daughter, were last seen by relatives Saturday evening.

"He has gone from being a person of interest in this case to a criminal defendant," Comanche County District Attorney Fred Smith said.

The medical examiner's office has not determined the official cause of death, but charging documents show Tonya Hobbs suffered blunt force trauma to her body.

In August, Tonya Hobbs sought a protective order against Lester Hobbs, writing in a petition that he threatened her daughters and vowed to kill her if she ever left him.

"My husband has threatened to hit my daughters in the head with a hammer and kill them," she wrote.

An emergency protective order was granted, but the case was dismissed two weeks later when both Tonya Hobbs and her husband failed to appear in court, records show.

Tonya Hobbs traveled with her two daughters to Geronimo on Saturday in an attempt to reconcile the relationship with Lester Hobbs, said Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown.

Tonya Hobbs' older daughter stayed with Hobbs' relatives and is not missing.

Aja's father, J.J. Johnson of Oklahoma City, delivered a tearful plea Monday for the girl's safe return.

"Please Lester, if you're listening, anybody who knows where she is, please take her to a safe spot," Johnson said. "I'll see that she's picked up with no questions asked.

Oklahoma grandmother fears the worst for missing Geronimo girl (With police news conference video)

GERONIMO — It's been four days since anyone has seen Aja Johnson, and the 7-year-old's grandmother said this morning she fears Lester Hobbs has done something unspeakable to his stepdaughter.

"He hated that little girl," Oklahoma City resident Alice Dunkin said. "He's very mean to her. He would all but beat Aja."

Lester Hobbs was charged Tuesday with kidnapping Aja and killing the girl's mother, Tonya Hobbs.

"I'm afraid he's already killed her," said Dunkin, who is the mother of Tonya Hobbs. "It's been four days and we haven't heard a word. There's an Amber Alert out, and nobody has spotted them and nobody has spotted their car."

Dunkin said Hobbs may have had as much as a 24-hour head start before anyone found her daughter's body inside his recreational vehicle.

"He could be anywhere," she said.

What happened

Tonya Hobbs had known Lester Hobbs since she was 18, Dunkin said. She was 37 when she was found dead Sunday night in Geronimo.

A Comanche County court affidavit said Tonya Hobbs died from blunt force trauma to the body.

Dunkin said her daughter had taken her two daughters, Kerissa Hobbs, 13, and Aja Johnson, 7, to see Lester Hobbs because he had a Monday court date on a DUI charge for which he was afraid he was going back to prison.

Lester Hobbs is Kerissa's father, Dunkin said.

"They were separated but she took the girls down there because he wanted to see them one last time," Dunkin said.

On Saturday night, the family had dinner together, Dunkin said.

What happened next is not entirely clear, Dunkin said, but Kerissa Hobbs apparently left. She returned Sunday evening to find the door to the RV locked and her mother's car missing. She went to her aunt's home next door and the aunt used a knife to pry open the RV door.
When the door opened, about 9:40 p.m., they found the body.

A history of violence

Dunkin said she knew Lester Hobbs could get violent, especially when he was drinking.

Dunkin said he "cussed her out" on more than one occasion, and she said he had a history of domestic abuse and victim protective orders sought against him.

But Dunkin never thought Lester Hobbs would be capable of killing her daughter.

"I can see him beating her up, slapping her around and such, but murder — I never would have seen it in a million years," Dunkin said.

The thing that has her most confused, though, is why Hobbs took Aja.

"I've sat here and racked my brain about why he would let Kerissa go and take Aja," she said. "He didn't take his own daughter but he took Aja, and she's not any kin to him.

"He never liked Aja, and I'm afraid he's got something planned. I figure he's killed my daughter, and I hope and pray he comes back with my granddaughter. But I'm afraid it's looking grim that we'll never find her."

And Dunkin is a real fool.  She can see Hobbs beating her dauther up, slapping her around but murder seemed out of the question?!  What a dolt.  Who's to say Hobbs wouldn't have gone too far in the beating?  This just makes me sick.   Ignorant.    It would be Tonya Hobbs choice to go see Lester Hobbs.  But why, oh why bring a child he didn't like?  He was a violent man, a loser time and time again.  And still Tonya went to see him,  and brought Aja along with her.  And it's said in the above article Hobbs didn't like Aja.  Poor, poor Aja.  Having to go see someone like that.  Brought there by her own mother.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

Store security photo shows wanted man with slaying victim (with video)

(CNN) -- Investigators released photographs Wednesday showing a man wanted in the case of a slain woman and her missing 7-year-old daughter.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation released images taken by a security camera of 37-year-old Tonya Hobbs and her estranged husband, Lester Williams Hobbs, as they shopped for food just hours before Tonya Hobbs was killed.

Police have charged Lester Hobbs with murder in his estranged wife's death. They also have charged him with kidnapping Tonya Hobbs' daughter, Aja Daniell Johnson, the bureau said Wednesday.

"These new pictures show the suspect car that is now missing as well as what the suspect, Lester Hobbs, looks like and the clothes he may be wearing now," a bureau spokeswoman, Jessica Brown, said in a statement.

Investigators have asked anyone with information about Hobbs or Aja to call a new hotline number at 1-800-THE-LOST.

The images released Wednesday were taken about 5:15 p.m. Saturday at a store in Lawton, Oklahoma. Shortly after that, the couple and Aja apparently went to the home of Lester Hobbs' sister to eat, police said.

Hobbs was found dead in a parked RV the next day in Geronimo, Oklahoma. Her daughter has been missing since then.

"We've got to find that little girl," Special Agent Ray Homer of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said this week.

The girl has a medical condition that requires medication, police have said, though they declined to elaborate.

Lester Hobbs, 46, and Aja are presumed to be in Hobbs' car -- a white 1992 Toyota Paseo with an Oklahoma tag number 577-BPW, police said.

Police have searched for them in Oklahoma and Texas.

Lester and Tonya Hobbs were separated, but apparently Tonya Hobbs was visiting her estranged husband in an attempt to reconcile, Richard Goss, agent in charge of the state bureau of investigation's Lawton, Oklahoma, office, told reporters this week.

Lester Hobbs is not Aja's biological father, police said. He has an extensive criminal history, Goss said, without elaborating.

Aja's biological father was awarded emergency custody of her in November, according to Oklahoma County District Court documents obtained by CNN affiliate KWTV of Oklahoma City.

At a hearing, Tonya Hobbs -- identified as Tonya Dunkin in the documents -- and the girl's father, John Johnson, agreed that she would have supervised visitation with Aja and keep the girl away from Lester Hobbs, the documents said.

The Reno Police Department was not able to find in Reno a man wanted in Oklahoma on an Amber Alert.

Reno police officers have been made aware that there was an unconfirmed report Lester William Hobbs was seen in the West Fourth Street area and will continue to look for him, Lt. Mike Whan said.

"We don't have officers dedicated to it right this minute," Whan said. "We've cleared this call."

Although dispatchers told police Hobbs may be in the area and may have the daughter of the woman he is suspected of killing, no Amber Alert has been issued for the Reno area.

"We just checked and Oklahoma has not asked us to extend the Amber Alert into Nevada," Whan said.

Officials: Murdered Oklahoma Woman's Car Possibly Spotted

Friday, January 29, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY  —  Authorities in Oklahoma are trying to follow the trail of a murder suspect and a missing 7-year-old girl.

They say Lester Hobbs murdered his estranged wife Sunday and then vanished with her young daughter, Aja Johnson. The woman was found beaten to death in a motor home about 100 miles southwest of Oklahoma City.

Officials say a car matching the description of a vehicle belonging to the slain woman may have been spotted in Oklahoma City.

Meanwhile, the missing girl's father has been issuing frantic appeals for his daughter's safe return "no questions asked." Authorities in Oklahoma say it is crucial to find Aja as quickly as possible.

Lester Hobbs was last seen driving his wife's 1992 Toyota Paseo with Oklahoma license plates. The car has no hubcaps and has plastic covering the rear passenger window.

Texas cancels Amber Alert for missing Okla. girl

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Texas officials are canceling an Amber Alert issued in that state for a missing 7-year-old Oklahoma girl.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange says the alert was deactivated Friday because no new information leads investigators to believe Aja Johnson is in Texas.

The girl and 46-year-old Lester Hobbs were last seen on Saturday - the day before Hobbs' estranged wife Tonya was found dead inside his motor home in Geronimo.

An Amber Alert was issued in Texas because investigators believed Hobbs may have traveled there.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown says there have been no substantiated sightings of the two or the white 2002 Toyota Paseo they are believed to be traveling in.

I don't see how she's alive.  The grandma said he hated Aja.  Why would he take her?  I think it's more likely he killed Aja in front of her mother then killed the mother.  He got rid of Aja's body and took off.  I don't think he's a very bright man so I'd bet her body won't be far from the road.

I just found Aja, thread....And for the life of me, I can't feel any compassion for her dead mother. God Forgive me but she took that sweet innocent baby into a home that she knew she would not be safe in. Why are some women so damn stupid. He had already told her he would kill the girls, but this stupid cow took her there any way. Where was the person who was suppose to be supervising her visitation? Why even pick up the child and take her there? He has already made it plain he didn't care for so why take her there.
Prayers for her precious little life.

Good Morning everyone -- The Amber Alert system needs to be changed --

Comanche County sheriff wants Amber Alerts to go out across America
BY RON JACKSON The Oklahoman    Comments 0
Published: January 31, 2010

GERONIMO — Comanche County Sheriff Kenny Stradley had assumed Amber Alerts were broadcast nationwide. This week’s search for Aja Johnson has taught the veteran lawman otherwise.

More InfoAnyone who spots Aja Johnson, Lester Hobbs or the suspect car should call 911 immediately. Anyone who has information can also call the National Center for Missing and Exploited
Children at (800) 843-5678. Aja is described as 4 feet tall and weighing about 59 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair with black on the tips. Lester Hobbs is about 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 190 pounds. He should be considered armed and dangerous, authorities said. A $20,000 reward was posted Thursday for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Hobbs.

"I must admit I thought those Amber Alerts went out across the U.S.,” Stradley said. "Evidently, I was mistaken. That needs to change. When this is all over I will see what I can do about getting that changed. Right now, we need to find that little girl.”

Stradley requested the Amber Alert on Sunday night after the body of Aja’s slain mother, Tonya Hobbs, was found in the small town of Geronimo south of Lawton. Hobbs, 37, was found beaten to death inside the recreational vehicle of her estranged husband, Lester Hobbs.

The slaying was reported by Lester Hobbs’ sister, Mildred Anderson, at 9:42 p.m., according to a Comanche County court affidavit. County deputies and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents were called, and it was quickly deduced that 7-year-old Aja, Lester Hobbs and Tonya Hobbs’ white 1992 Toyota Paseo were missing.

It was determined the report met Amber Alert guidelines, and an alert was issued at midnight.

Based on an interview with Anderson, investigators learned that Lester and Tonya Hobbs and Aja were last seen at 7 p.m. Saturday after having dinner at Anderson’s trailer home on the same town lot as the RV.

Investigators realized the alleged abductor may have been on the run for as long as 29 hours.

"This is an odd situation in that Lester had a 24- to 29-hour jump on us,” said Jessica Brown, OSBI spokeswoman. "He certainly had enough time to travel far away from Oklahoma, if in fact, that’s what he did. We just don’t know. That’s why a national Amber Alert system is paramount.”

Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, Colorado and Louisiana are generally cooperative about issuing Oklahoma’s Amber Alert requests, Brown said. Yet it appears only Texas issued an Amber Alert in Aja’s case, and the Texas alert was canceled on Friday.

"I understand the need for national guidelines,” Brown said.

"We have guidelines at the state level, and that’s fine. But I don’t see why a national system would be a problem. Only makes sense, right?”

In 2003, then-President George W. Bush signed the Prosecutorial Remedies and Other Tools to end the Exploitation of Children Today (PROTECT) Act into law. The act codified the national coordination of state and local Amber Alert programs, but stopped short of establishing a national system. Each state chooses when to release an Amber Alert.

Local authorities say they have done everything to maximize resources in the search for Aja. Comanche County District Attorney Fred Smith filed first-degree murder and kidnapping charges against Lester Hobbs last week. He said he did so to use the services of the U.S. Marshal’s Office and the FBI in case if it became a multistate chase.

"Now if we have a sighting in, say, Montana, I don’t have to pull one of my guys from down here and send him up there,” Stradley said.

"I can call the U.S. Marshal’s regional office up there and get some assistance immediately.”

Stradley said he still understands the importance of Amber Alerts, which have proven successful since their creation in 1997. In 2008 — the most recent data available — 194 Amber Alerts were issued nationwide involving 256 children, according to The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The center reported that 166 of those cases resulted in recovery; about half could be attributed directly to the issuance of Amber Alerts.

Eight of the children were dead when they were found.

Why in the h3ll didn't his sister call police when they showed up for dinner?  He was not supposed to be around Aja.  Why are people enabling these criminals?

One thought is they were afraid of Lester Hobbs, and were worried about their own skins instead of protecting Aja.  And another thought is some people don't want to call the police because they themselves had previous run-ins or bad experiences with police or may even have something to hide themselves.  Maybe they figured it would be the last time they would have to deal with Lester Hobbs, because it looked like he was headed for jail.  And one last thought, maybe Aja's mom Tonya talked them into it.

Police Step Up Aja Johnson Search

Police Think Ice Storm May Have Slowed Lester Hobbs' Escape
POSTED: 6:30 pm CST February 3, 2010
UPDATED: 10:33 pm CST February 3, 2010

Authorities are ramping up their search for a registered sex offender who police believe abducted Aja Johnson, 7.

Aja has been missing for more than a week after her mother was slain in the town of Geronimo. Police have indicated that Lester Hobbs may be linked to the killing and the kidnapping.

The winter storm that hit the area slowed the search for Aja, but police said they think it may have also slowed Hobbs. They said they think he may have disguised himself and the girl.

Searchers Step Up Efforts For Missing Girl

Investigators said they're retracing their steps to the initial scene of the crime and hope to find fresh clues. They said bringing the case back into the spotlight is the best way to bring Aja home.

"We've gone back to square one and we're doing a lot of things to see if, by chance, we overlooked something," said Richard Goss of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

He said that none of the nearly 300 leads have panned out.

Comanche County Sheriff Kenny Stradley went house-to-house on Thursday to show Aja's picture, asking people if they have seen the girl.

"It's what everybody is talking about," said resident Janie Bowles. "She needs to be found safe."

Authorities said they believe Aja is still alive and may be close by. They said they don't believe Hobbs has left the state.

Teams have also been looking in barns and vacant homes.

There is a $20,000 reward available for information leading to Hobbs' arrest. Police said they're looking for a white Toyota Paseo with a plastic covering over one of the windows. They asked anyone who has seen Hobbs or the vehicle to call 911.

"We do need people's help," Goss said. "We know that the storm came in and people's attention was down and now we need to come back again. I will say this again. Act like this is your daughter and keep looking."

Sex offender unit added to search for missing Oklahoma girl Aja Johnson

GERONIMO — The U.S. Marshal's Service has added its Sex Offender Investigation Unit to the search for a missing 7-year-old girl and her stepfather.

Authorities have been searching for 7-year-old Aja Johnson and 46-year-old Lester Hobbs since Jan. 24 when Hobbs' estranged wife — who was the girl's mother — was found beaten to death.

The body of 37-year-old Tonya Hobbs was found in a camper near Geronimo.

Marc Crawford with the marshals service says the sex offender unit was added because of the possibility Hobbs is sexually abusing the girl.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown says investigators are going through about 300 leads in the case.

Search Continues for Missing Oklahoma Girl

GERONIMO, Oklahoma -- The U.S. Marshal's Service has added its Sex Offender Investigation Unit to the search for a missing 7-year-old girl and her stepfather.

Authorities have been searching for 7-year-old Aja Johnson and Lester Hobbs since Jan. 24 when Tonya Hobbs, 37, Lester Hobbs' estranged wife and the mother of the girl, was found beaten to death in a camper near Geronimo in southern Comanche County. Hobbs, 46, was charged Jan. 26 in Comanche County District Court with first-degree murder and kidnapping.

Law enforcement officers conducted a house-by-house search Wednesday for the missing girl and planned to check every home in the area, said Marc Crawford of the Sex Offender Investigation Unit.

"We don't have any particular theories. It's just that we are going to start the investigation over again. Did we are law enforcement overlook something, and that's why we are working together as a team," Crawford said.

Crawford said that the Sex Offender Unit became involved in the investigation after investigators received information that Hobbs could be sexually abusing the child.

Chopper 4 helps search for missing girl

GERONIMO, OK -- For the first time, the investigation and search for missing girl, Aja Johnson, took the air on Friday. With the help of Chopper 4, search crews were able to get a bird's eye view of the most remote areas in the county.

An Amber Alert has been in effect since January 24 for 7-year-old Aja Johnson. The alert was issued after her mother, Tonya Hobbs, was found beaten to death in an RV in Geronimo.

Authorities believe Tonya's estranged husband 46-year-old Lester Hobbs took the little girl and killed Tonya.

Authorities are focused on finding the 1992 Toyota driven by Hobbs.

At the same time, on the ground, officers once again go door to door in Geronimo.

While the search again turned up empty, investigators aren't giving up hope.

"We're glad Channel 4 was here providing us with helicopter support. We still hope we can get Hobbs found and get Aja back to her father," said Marc Crawford.

Investigators are still offering a 20 thousand dollar reward for information that leads to an arrest.

Search For Aja Johnson Continues

U.S. Marshals are taking to the skies and combing every inch of Geronimo in what is now the most intense search yet for missing seven-year-old, Aja Johnson. They are going door to door asking questions, scouring buildings, cellers. anything that could help find Aja.

Seven-year-old Aja and her step-father Lester Hobbs have been missing since January 24th. The same day Aja's mother was found beaten to death in her camper near Geronimo. A murder warrant has been issued for Hobb's.

If you have any information on Aja, Hobbs or where his 1992 Toyota Paseo with a license plate 577-BPW is, please call 911.

Richard Boss of the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation said, "We don't have any definitive information that Lester Hobbs might still be in the area of Geronimo, Oklahoma, but on the contrary we don't have any definitive information that has led us to believe he's outside of the area."

Officials say last week's ice storm hampered their search efforts, even though investigators have worked around the clock since Tonya Hobbs was killed. OSBI said they're following about 300 leads.

Where is Aja Johnson? (with video)

PIEDMONT, OK -- It's been almost three weeks since the search for seven-year-old Aja Johnson began. The amber alert for the little girl was issued after her mother was found beaten to death in an RV in Geronimo. Aja's mother, 37-year-old Tonya Hobbs was laid to rest Tuesday.

Aja's father, Tonya's ex-husband was a pallbearer and says, "Her soul isn't quite rested yet because this hasn't been resolved." J.J. Says Tonya Hobbs took Aja for the weekend, but left him with a promise.

He says, "I believe she's still going to try to fulfill the promise that she made when she left here that day. She was going to bring my daughter back safely. She promised me that."

Authorities have finished their door to door search in Geronimo for Lester Hobbs.

Lester is Tonya's estranged husband.

He is charged with Tonya's murder and Aja's kidnapping.

Marc Crawford with the U.S. Marshals Service says of the search, "It was productive as far as letting us know where he's not, and that gave us a better feel for the investigation."

Investigators continue to follow up on tips from the public and Crawford says, "Every lead that comes in is new hope and a new inspiration in the investigation."

If you have any information about the location of Aja Johnson, Lester Hobbs, or the white 1992 Toyota Paseo they are believed to be in please call 1-800 THE LOST.

Hello, Northern Rose

I'm a new monkey, but I live in Northwest Arkansas, have a son living in Oklahoma going to college.  Just wanted to add that, during the time Aja has been missing, there was a terrible snow storm that blanketed nearly the entire state of Oklahoma.  Power was out all over the state, and many are worried about the search at that time.  I hate to say this, but my gut feeling is that this sweet little girl has come to the ultimate harm....

Reward Increased For Information On Missing Oklahoma Girl
$ 20,000

Geronimo - A reward for information on the whereabouts of a seven-year-old girl thought to have been abducted by a man wanted for murdering the girl's mother has been increased.

A 20-thousand dollar reward is now being offered for information on Aja Johnson's whereabouts. She hasn't been seen since January 24th, when her mother, Tonya Hobbs, was found beaten to death inside an RV near Geronimo in southwestern Oklahoma.

Law enforcement in Oklahoma, Texas, California, Oregon and points in between have been looking for 46-year-old Lester Hobbs, who is charged with Tonya Hobbs' murder.

Authorities believe Lester Hobbs has a home in Lincoln County and may have relatives in Texas, California and Oregon.

Hobbs is a white male, about 5'9" and 185 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. He no longer has a goatee as seen in his photo here, but he does have a mustache. He has several tattoos all over his upper body.

He was last seen driving a white, two-door 1992 Toyota Paseo with Oklahoma tag 577-BPW. The vehicle has no hubcaps and its back window was covered with plastic.

Aja is a white female, about four feet tall and 65 pounds with a very thin build. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Authorities say the child has a health condition which requires daily medication.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Aja Johnson, Lester Hobbs or the vehicle is asked to immediately call 911.

A search warrant has been issused for the recreational vehicle where Aja Johnson’s mother, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs, was found beaten to death. pHOTO BY RON JACKSON, THE OKLAHOMAN

GERONIMO — Inside the command post at Geronimo’s town hall, red-eyed investigators sift through documents, exchange theories and field every tip that might lead to finding 7-year-old Aja Johnson.

hey have done so continuously since Johnson’s disappearance on Jan. 24, the day Aja’s mother, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs, was found beaten to death inside a recreational vehicle in Geronimo. The RV was owned by Tonya’s estranged husband, Lester William Hobbs – the man now charged in Comanche County with her killing and Aja’s abduction.

Investigators from multiple agencies have followed more than 336 leads in a manhunt that has stretched across the nation. Yet there have been no confirmed sightings of Aja, Hobbs or the white 1992 Toyota Paseo that likely carried them away from the scene of her mother’s slaying.

"We will continue to look until that little girl is found,” said Richard Goss, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent in charge. "We have essentially become Aja’s proxy family. The child is real. She’s a precious, 7-year-old girl with her whole life in front of her.”

J.J. Johnson, Aja’s father, said his daughter’s disappearance is a parent’s worst nightmare.

"I would like to tell her that Daddy loves her, and to come home,” said Johnson, who lives in Oklahoma City and is Aja’s custodial parent. "This may be old news to some people, but this news is front page every day for me.”

Goss, a law enforcement veteran of 34 years, rubs his tired eyes. He and other investigative team members have routinely logged 16- and 18-hour days in an effort to bring Aja home safely. They worked through the Jan. 28 ice storm, which knocked out electricity at the home of every team member.

They used a search warrant to confiscate the recreational vehicle, Comanche County Sheriff Kenny Stradley said. Crime scene investigators are now combing the vehicle for clues.

"If you can think of it, we’ve done it,” Goss said. "We’re following every lead, even the weak ones, because any one of them could turn out to be legit.”

Last week investigators mobilized within minutes of receiving a tip that Hobbs had been spotted at a Shawnee restaurant, Stradley said. The alleged sighting ended with hopes yet again dashed.

"I’ve had my share of manhunts over the years,” Goss said. "But I have never experienced one in which someone has been able to avoid detection with the amount of intensity we have applied to this investigation.

"I still hold the firm belief that the car is the key. If we find the car, we’ll find them.”

Alleged sightings have poured in from throughout Oklahoma, Texas, California, Oregon, Florida and Indiana, Goss said. Several calls were generated by "America’s Most Wanted”, which featured the case for a second time Saturday night during a 15-minute segment. The hot line has even received calls from psychics.

"We’re looking at everything,” Stradley said. "We just keep asking for the public’s help.”

Large strips of butcher paper hang on the walls inside the command post, listing the names of everyone pertinent to the investigation and a timeline of events. Telephones ring around the clock, and hope ebbs and flows with each new lead.

No one has to be reminded that Hobbs had as much as a 29-hour jump on law enforcement. "Really, it boils down to two things,” Goss said. "Hobbs is either receiving aid from a person or persons we’ve not yet identified, or he’s isolated himself somewhere with the automobile.”

The investigator in him refuses to rest.

"And let me say this: If anyone is providing aid or assistance to Hobbs, it’s not worth it,” Goss said. "This will end some day, and when it does we’ll find out.”

Spokeswoman Jessica Brown says the two could be most anywhere, and an AMBER Alert remains in effect. The command post in the Comanche County town of Geronimo has been taken down, but the case is still being worked out of the OSBI office in Lawton. Brown says it's been difficult from the beginning with inclement weather and other barriers.

Family of missing Geronimo girl waits
Relatives, friends keep eyes and ears open for sightings, news about 7-year-old Aja Johnson

BY RON JACKSON The Oklahoman

(Video Available)
BLANCHARD — Aja Johnson was beaten and bruised by her suspected abductor in August, according to a family friend who had sheltered the 7-year-old child and her mother at that time.

Lester William Hobbs, 46, the man wanted in connection with Aja’s apparent kidnapping and the slaying of his estranged wife, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs, "just went off” on the girl, bruising her "from her butt to the bottom of her knees,” said Sissy Miller, 26, of Blanchard.

"That poor child was bruised so badly she couldn’t even sit,” Miller said. "We took pictures and turned them into DHS. We told school officials, and they reported it, too, but we were just told there was nothing that could be done. Now look what’s happened.

Aja has been missing since Jan. 24, when relatives found her mother beaten to death inside Lester Hobbs’ recreational vehicle that was parked outside his sister’s trailer home in Geronimo.

Tonya Hobbs, 37, died from blunt force trauma to the body, according to the state medical examiner.

Since then there have been no confirmed sightings of Aja, Lester Hobbs or Tonya Hobbs’ white 1992 Toyota Paseo (Oklahoma tag 577-BPW), which investigators think might be key to solving the case. The U.S. Marshal’s office and the FBI have joined the hunt.

"I can’t even sleep at night,” said Miller, who is taking care of Tonya and Lester Hobbs’ 13-year-old daughter. "I just keep waiting to hear that little knock at the front door, hoping it will be Aja. I look all the time. Whenever I’m driving I’m constantly looking, thinking I might see her walking down the street.”

Miller said on a recent cold day, Aja’s older sister said to her, "‘I hope Aja has her coat. It’s really cold today.’ I just broke down and started crying.”

Roy Anderson, Miller’s father and next door neighbor, is also grieving. He had known Tonya Hobbs for 15 years and has raised her oldest child, a 15-year-old boy, since he was a baby.

Anderson said he worried about Tonya Hobbs’ relationship with Lester Hobbs.

"I tolerated him,” Anderson said. "Then I saw those bruises on that little girl, and that was it for me. I don’t care who you are, you just don’t hurt a child.”

Department of Human Services spokeswoman Beth Scott said Friday she could "neither confirm nor deny” the reports of Aja’s bruising.

She cited state law and the agency’s requirement to protect victim confidentiality.

J.J. Johnson, Aja’s father who gained custody of her in November, continues to have sleepless nights. Through it all, he said he remains positive.

"I just miss her so bad,” said Johnson, 60, of Oklahoma City. "Every time the phone rings I think, ‘This could be it. This could be the one.’

"I think about the day she comes home all the time. I just picture her walking through that front door with a big smile and hugging her daddy.”

Waiting for her
Aja’s bedroom remains as it was the day she left with her mother, supposedly for an overnight birthday party. Barbie dolls she played with in the bathtub rest atop a toy chest, her favorite miniature horse sits atop a dresser and a stuffed wiener dog lays on her tiny bed with a inscription stitched on its side: "I love you this much.”

A Disney castle toy stove sits against the wall.

"This is where she’d turn on the stove and say, ‘Daddy, I’m cooking breakfast,’” Johnson said. "She’s something else. ... I know wherever she’s at, she’s missing her daddy and wants to come home.”

Tonya Hobbs was supposed to have supervised visits only, but Johnson allowed her to take Aja to the party. He never imagined she would instead take Aja and her sister to see Lester Hobbs, who had reportedly threatened to harm Tonya and the girls only months earlier.

In August, Tonya Hobbs filed a request for a protective order in Lincoln County.

She wrote, "My husband has threatened to hit my daughters in the head with a hammer and kill them. He also threatened to kill me if I left him.”

The court dismissed the request when neither Tonya nor Lester Hobbs appeared for the hearing.

By January, Lester Hobbs’ freedom appeared to be in jeopardy. He was ordered to appear in Lincoln County District Court on Jan. 25 on a DUI charge, and his criminal past seemed to be catching up with him. In 2001, state Corrections Department records show, he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in Cleveland County.

"Lester wanted to see those kids one last time,” said Johnson, trying to piece together the tragedy. "For whatever reason, she trusted him, and it cost her her life.”

On the night before the discovery of Tonya Hobbs’ body, she and Lester Hobbs were seen arguing by the older daughter, Miller said.

"(She) told me Lester was yelling at Tonya,” Miller said. "He had found the numbers of some guys in her cell phone, and became angry. He even called a few of them, and one turned out to be a cousin.

"She misses Aja a lot,” Miller said of the older daughter. "I just tell her, ‘Pray.’ I truly believe Aja is still alive.”

LAWTON, OK -- The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is holding a news conference Thursday afternoon in Lawton concerning the search for a missing 7-year-old girl and her kidnapper.

It has been over a month since Aja Johnson disappeared as well as the man suspected of kidnapping her, Lester Hobbs.

The OSBI says it will be discussing where the case stands right now.

The girl and Hobbs haven't been seen since Hobbs' estranged wife, Tonya was found beaten to death in an RV in Geronimo on January 24.

The news conference will begin at 2 p.m. and The News On 6 is planning to live stream the news conference.

Agents say Aja Johnson's suspected abductor can survive on little money and food

Lester Hobbs
LAWTON - Lester William Hobbs, 7-year-old Aja Johnson's suspected abductor, is a man who can survive in the shadows of society, investigators said during a press conference today.

Through hundreds of interviews, investigators said, they have uncovered the portrait of a drifter who can hustle money in pool halls, work on cars and sustain himself on pocket change. Now, more than a month after Aja's disappearance, they are again pleading for the public's help.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Agent-in-Charge Richard Goss had a message for Hobbs, who is charged with Aja's kidnapping and the Jan. 24 killing of his estranged wife and Aja's mother, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs.

"The intensity of this manhunt, our search for you, will not lessen, will not end, until Aja is returned," Goss read from a prepared statement. "Release Aja now. Drop her off at a Target, a Walmart, a K-Mart any busy store where she will be safe. Attach a note to her clothing simply stating: 'Call police Amber Alert Aja Johnson.' "

State and federal investigators have immersed themselves in Hobbs' world, starting with the Geronimo homicide scene inside his recreational vehicle.

Goss revealed for the first time that investigators think Tonya was beaten to death with a hammer and that Aja likely witnessed the killing "lying by her mother's side on a sofa."

Goss said his team has not received one concrete lead on Aja, Lester Hobbs or Tonya Hobbs' white 1992 Toyota Paseo, which they think Lester Hobbs was driving when he left the RV.

"Hobbs can survive on very little money 20 bucks here; 20 bucks there," Goss said. "In fact, his needs seem to be met with only cigarettes, liquor, and very little food. He is a self-taught automobile mechanic and will offer to do minor repairs for little money. He has worked in the past in small automotive garages and as a mechanic in service stations.

"He likes to cruise the Internet searching for lonely women," Goss said. "If Hobbs no longer has a vehicle, he will travel across the country by bus, or will hitchhike."

Investigators said Hobbs likes to change his appearance with the use of hair dyes and hair growth, but there are two physical characteristics he can't easily hide: Tattoos and a broken nose. Hobbs has the word "ROSE" tattooed across the top of the fingers of his right hand and "LOVE" tattooed across the top of the fingers of his left hand.

Oklahoma Agents: No Sign Of Little Girl And Kidnapper

Thursday, Feb 25, 2010 @03:41pm CST

(Lawton, OK) -- A manhunt continues in Oklahoma for a missing seven-year-old girl and the man who allegedly kidnapped her last month.

Lawmen believe little Aja Johnson was taken by 46-year-old Lester Hobbs.

On January 24th, Hobbs' estranged 36-year-old wife Tonya Hobbs, who is the mother of the girl, was found beaten to death in an RV in Geronimo, Oklahoma.

Hobbs is not in custody but has been charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping.

Richard Goss, an agent with the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation, told a news conference there is a 20-thousand-dollar reward for information leading to Hobbs' arrest and the recovery of the girl.

Goss appealed to the public to help find the girl and her kidnapper.

He said Hobbs works as an auto mechanic and can survive on very little money, needing only cigarettes, liquor and a little food.

Hobbs has distinctive tattoos on his hands that say "Rose" and "Love." Goss released photos that show Hobbs with a visibly crooked nose, different hairstyles and facial hair.

The agent urged Hobbs to drop the girl off at any busy retail store with a note attached to her clothing with her name and the message "call police." Goss added if anyone is sheltering Hobbs and the girl, they should notify authorities immediately or face justice.

Goss stated Hobbs is a violent man who beat his estranged wife to death with a hammer, possibly in the presence of the little girl.

The child is said to suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and sleeping problems that require medication.

It's believed the girl hasn't had her medication since January 22nd.

The girl's biological father, 66-year-old J.J. Johnson, has legal custody of the child, although it's unclear why she was with her mother when the woman was murdered and the girl was kidnapped.

Goss said Tonya Hobbs had a protective order against Lester Hobbs at the time of the crimes.

Oklahoma authorities have released new photos in the case of missing 7-year-old, Aja Johnson. The photos show the little girl and the man accused of kidnapping her, Lester Hobbs. He is also accused of murdering his wife, Aja's mother, Tonya Hobbs.

Police believe Hobbs has been on the run with Aja for over a month, but have no evidence that he has harmed her.

On Thursday, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Agent in Charge Richard Goss, said at a news conference that Hobbs enjoys playing pool at local bars, trolls the Internet for lonely women, and changes his hair color frequently.

According to Goss, Hobbs is also a self-taught mechanic and has worked in small garages for money.
“He’s been described as a cowardly abuser who only confronts people of a lesser stature than himself,” said Goss.

Deputy U.S. Marshal A.D. Templeton described Hobbs as “…a scavenger moving from point to point… traveling at night, just like a coyote.”

Hobbs has two distinctive tattoos including the word “ROSE” on his right hand and the word “LOVE” on his left hand. His nose has been broken, thus it is crooked.

KOCO reports that Hobbs threatened to kill his wife and children in the past with a hammer.

“It now appears that Lester Hobbs carried out that threat and actually used a hammer to kill his own wife. Very possibly, Aja lay on the sofa next to him,” said Goss.

Aja is 4-feet tall, with brown eyes and brown hair and weighs about 65 pounds.

Lester Hobbs is 6-foot-1 and weighs about 190 pounds. He has green eyes, brown hair, and multiple tattoos, including wings on his chest and the word "Tony" on his left forearm. He was last seen driving a white 1995 Toyota Paseo with Oklahoma license plate 577-BPW. Reports indicate the rear window may be broken out and the vehicle is missing hubcaps.

Anyone with information should call the U.S. Marshals Service in Oklahoma City at (405) 231-4206.

Where is Lester Hobbs?  How does he just disappear?  No sightings?  I think that I heard of one in TX.  This is so sad.  I grew up in Coweta, Oklahoma (18 years).  I pray that little Aja is found and I pray that she is unharmed.  What a sad sad story.

Hobbs family is pleading for the safe return of Aja.By Colleen Chen, NEWS 9

GERONIMO, Oklahoma -- The family of Lester Hobbs is pleading for him to let 7-year-old Aja Johnson go.

Investigators believe Lester Hobbs took the girl after killing her mother in January. Tonya Hobbs was found dead by her sister-in-law Mildred Anderson.

"It was horrifying. We had tried for hours to get in touch with Tonya and Lester after the car had been missing for several hours. We kept calling cell phones and got the voicemail. We then realized the phone was ringing from inside the camper. When I stepped in, all I saw was an arm and a hand sticking out," Anderson said.

Lester's brother Buck said he was horrified but not surprised when he found out about Tonya's death.

"He's a very violent man. He had made threats to kill her many times. I don't think he's been with one woman he hasn't been," Buck Hobbs said.

Buck said he wants his brother brought to justice, but more importantly he wants Aja Johnson to get home safely.

"I pray for her every night. I pray that she's OK. I can't imagine what she's been going through," he said.

The siblings of Lester Hobbs said they've been repeatedly questioned by the OSBI, but are adamant they have no information on Lester's whereabouts.

"If I knew anything, authorities would get the first phone call. Anytime we think of anything that might help, we call them. We've left messages in the middle of the night," Anderson said.

The family said they have worried that neither Aja or Lester are still alive but are trying to stay positive.

"I don't think we'll ever see Lester again. He's too afraid of prison to turn himself in, but we want him to give up the little girl," Buck said.

Buck said he has a message directly for his brother Lester.

"Please let that little girl go. All she's ever done is love you. She does not deserve anything she could be going through right now," Buck said.

Another sibling, Betty Smith, said she has a message for the rest of America.

"Somebody out there has had to see that car or has had to seen him. Lord help them if they have and let them come forward," Smith said.

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Authorities have a confirmed they have found a car in rural Norman connected to a man wanted for murder and kidnapping.

A white Toyota Paseo with Oklahoma license plate number 577-BPW was found at Southeast 108th Street and Highway 9 in Norman. The car matched the description of a car authorities said they believed Lester Hobbs was driving after murdering his estranged wife, Tonya Hobbs, in January and kidnapping her 7-year-old daughter Aja Johnson.

Police said they found the car after receiving a tip from an unknown person.

SkyNEWS 9 HD Pilot Mason Dunn said the car looked as though it had been at the location for quite some time. He also said there appeared to be a possible body outside the car and possible another inside the car.

NEWS 9 spoke with Aja's father at his Oklahoma City home. J.J. Johnson arrived home around 4:30 p.m. and said he had not heard anything from authorities.

When NEWS 9 updated J.J. Johnson on what crews were able to see at the scene, he became visibly upset.

OSBI: 2 Bodies Found Near Car
Agents Say No Reason To Believe Bodies Not Those Of Lester Hobbs, Aja Johnson

NORMAN, Okla. -- Two bodies were found near a vehicle belonging to Lester Hobbs, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents said late Monday.

OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown said that there is no reason not to believe the bodies aren't those of Lester Hobbs and 7-year-old Aja Johnson. However, no official identification has been made.

Brown told reporters late Monday that a note had been found at the scene. The contents of that note were not immediately known.

Hobbs' Toyota Paseo was found near 108th Street and Highway 9 at about 2:45 p.m., Norman police said. A spokeswoman with the state medical examiner's office confirmed that an examiner had been called to the scene.

Hobbs was wanted in connection with the death of his wife, Tonya Hobbs, and the kidnapping of her daughter, Aja Johnson. The 7-year-old had not been seen for two months.

Aja Johnson's father says he knew missing girl was dead

NORMAN — J.J. Johnson had a strong premonition that his abducted 7-year-old daughter, Aja, was dead. On Monday, that premonition appeared correct.

The decomposing bodies of an adult and child were found in a heavily wooded area near Lake Thunderbird. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown said agents think the remains are those of Aja and her alleged abductor, Lester William Hobbs.

Neither has been seen since Jan. 23.

"We have no reason to think it is not those two people," Brown said at a news conference. "We do not know the cause and manner of death yet."

Investigators also found the white, 1992 Toyota Paseo at the scene — a vehicle that belonged to Aja's mother and Lester's estranged wife, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs. Tonya Hobbs, 37, was found bludgeoned to death inside Lester Hobbs' recreational vehicle Jan. 24 in Geronimo.

Agents have since suspected Lester Hobbs of fleeing Comanche County in that vehicle after killing his wife. An aerial view from a television helicopter showed the vehicle's in a patch of clearing in a wooded area not far from 108th Avenue SE, just north of State Highway 9. A dirt road trailed past the vehicle through the woods.

"An OSBI agent came to the house and told me she couldn't positively tell me they had found Aja," Johnson told The Oklahoman as television crews gathered outside his south Oklahoma City home. "I said, 'I know it's her.' I saw her little jacket on the ground on TV.' We bought her a little blue jacket with orange lining for the winter.

"I know it's her."

Brown described the bodies as being in "quite an extended state of decomposition," meaning fingerprints and dental records will be used to make a positive identification. Authorities also found a note at the scene. While Brown declined to say what the note said, she added that "it does give us a glimpse of what was in Hobbs' mind at the time."

Johnson, meanwhile, said the wait has been tortuous.

"About three weeks ago, I started to suspect this," said Johnson, who received sole custody of his daughter after a court order in October. "As a parent, you have this fire in you that burns for your kid, and that fire went out.

"I just knew that gutless man would end up killing Aja and then himself. I've known all along that he was a coward."

Tonya Hobbs petitioned for a protective order against Hobbs in Lincoln County in August, but it was dismissed when neither showed up for a hearing.

Lester Hobbs served time in prison for assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

On the day Tonya Hobbs' body was found, he was scheduled to appear in court on a DUI charge and family members said he feared he would be returned to prison.

A resident discovered the car and bodies just before 3 p.m., said Norman police spokeswoman Jennifer Newell.

Norman officers had previously investigated at least one lead that Hobbs and the child had been spotted in Cleveland County. But Newell said, "It was not enough information to lead to anything."

Hobbs reportedly lived in Norman and may have been familiar with the area where his car was found, both Newell and Brown said.

"I just can't believe this has happened," Johnson said. "I'm numb."

NORMAN, Okla., March 30, 2010
Bodies Found Linked to Okla. Murder-Kidnap
Police say 2 Bodies Discovered Near Car Sought in Case of Man Accused of Killing Wife Likely Him, Daughter

AP)   Police in Oklahoma said Monday that two bodies found near a car belonging to a man accused of killing his estranged wife and kidnapping her 7-year-old daughter more than two months ago are likely those of the girl and the man.

Police said officers discovered the vehicle and bodies after receiving a call about 2:45 p.m. about an abandoned car near Oklahoma Highway 9 in southeast Norman. Police suspect the bodies are those of 7-year-old Aja Johnson and her stepfather, Lester Hobbs.

"We have no reason to believe it's not those two people," said Jessica Brown, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, who added that the bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition. "We wish it would have turned out differently."

Brown said the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's office will use fingerprints to positively identify Hobbs and dental records may have to be used to identify the girl. Brown characterized papers found inside the vehicle as a possible suicide note. She said no weapon had been found and officials hadn't immediately determined a cause of death.

Hobbs and the child had been missing since Aja's mother, Tonya Hobbs, was found dead Jan. 24 inside Lester Hobbs' motor home in Geronimo, about 100 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. Police searched for Hobbs and the girl and an Amber Alert was issued, but information called into authorities didn't lead to their whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Comanche County prosecutors charged Lester Hobbs with first-degree murder for his estranged wife's killing and with kidnapping for Aja's disappearance
Brown said investigators don't know how long the vehicle had been at the scene, but it could have been at least a month. The car was found well off the road in a clearing surrounded by trees and thicket.

Brown said Hobbs, 46, lived in Norman for several years in the past and may have been familiar with the area where the car and bodies were discovered.

Brown also said Hobbs' relatives would be questioned about whether they helped him flee following Tonya Hobbs' killing.

"We have no indication at this point in time that anyone did that," she said.

Aja's father, J.J. Johnson, couldn't be reached for comment by The Associated Press. He told reporters earlier that the discovery was closure for him and his family and his daughter is in a better place.

"As a parent, you know, the love for your child always burns in you. For some odd reason that fire burned out," Johnson told KWTV.

"I had a funny feeling something would happen like this. I never really wanted to accept it, but it was in the back of my mind. The thought of what he may be doing to her, I don't have to think about that anymore."

Car, Bodies Found in Connection With Case of Missing Girl Aja Johnson
Posted: Mar 29, 2010 4:08 PM CDT Updated: Mar 30, 2010 12:22 PM CDT
News9.com and NewsOn6.com had originally planned to live stream a 9 a.m. update, but have since learned it is an internal briefing only.

News9.com

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Authorities are awaiting confirmation that two bodies found in rural Norman are of missing 7-year-old Aja Johnson and the man charged with kidnapping her and killing her mother.

A white Toyota Paseo with Oklahoma license plate number 577-BPW was found at S.E. 108th Street and State Highway 9 in Norman. The car matched the description of a car authorities said they believed Lester Hobbs was driving after murdering his estranged wife, Tonya Hobbs, in January and kidnapping her 7-year-old daughter, Aja Johnson.

Norman Police said they found the car after receiving a 911 call from an unidentified person around 2:45 p.m. Monday, telling them to check out an abandoned vehicle in some woods along S.E. 108th Street near Lake Thunderbird.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Jessica Brown said an adult's and child's bodies were found at the scene, but were so decomposed they would have to use fingerprints and dental records to identify them. However, Brown said they do not have a reason to believe the bodies are not those of Lester Hobbs and Aja Johnson.

SkyNEWS 9 HD captured one body being pulled from the driver's seat of the vehicle, and another body was found outside the car on the passenger's side.

The bodies were taken to the state Medical Examiner's office where investigators will determine the cause of death and positively identify the bodies.
Brown said a note was also found inside the car. She did not go into details of what the note said exactly, but said it was somewhat of a suicide note.

"It does give us an idea of what happened, and what Hobbs was thinking at the time," Brown said.

NEWS 9 was told that in the note Hobbs blamed a host of people for recent events, including the death of his estranged wife, Tonya Hobbs, but he never blamed himself. He also poked fun at police in their inability to locate him.

Brown said the car had been in the woods, "weeks if not more than a month or so," but investigators do not believe it had been there since Hobbs and Aja went missing in January.

A decade ago, Hobbs lived in a house not far from the crime scene in Norman. Bobie Ford knew Lester Hobbs when he lived there, and said after the abduction he suspected Hobbs would come back, so he called 911.

"They said they would pass the information along, but they didn't have the police force to be able to come out here and patrol to look for him," Ford said.

Norman police said they recalled a call like that.

"We would go to that area and there was nothing we could confirm in that area whether they were camped out or staying in somebody's house," said Norman Police MPO Jennifer Newell.

NEWS 9 met Aja's father, J.J. Johnson, outside his Oklahoma City home and broke the news to him of the discovery in Norman Monday. He was immediately overwhelmed with grief but also expressed relief and admitted for the first time he lost hope long ago.
As a parent, love for your child always burns, but for some odd reason that fire went out. I had a funny feeling something like this would happen. That gutless person he is, he would do something like this. I never wanted to accept it, but in the back of my head I knew he'd do something like this," J.J. Johnson said.

Terri Johnson, J.J. Johnson's wife, said from video she saw of the scene, she recognized a jacket outside of the vehicle as Aja's.

"We saw the coat Aja took with her on the back rear tire of the car," Terri Johnson said.

While dealing with the devastating situation, the Johnsons said the one positive thing to come out of this for them was closure.

"It is closure to me because now I know she is going to be in a better place, and those thoughts in my head of what he was doing to her, the torturing he is doing, you know, I don't have to think of that anymore," J.J. Johnson said.

And now that the search for Aja is over, her family said they are remembering the life of the girl they loved so much.

"Aja was loved by a lot of people. She touched a lot of people's hearts during her short time here on earth. She touched a lot of people," J.J. Johnson said.

The Johnsons said they also wanted to thank Oklahomans for their support during the difficult past two months.

"I cannot thank you all enough for everything you have all done for me. Your support is overwhelming. I moved here in 1982, and from the bottom of my heart I love Oklahoma," J.J. Johnson said.
J.J. Johnson said he stayed home instead of going to the crime scene because he wanted to remember his baby girl the way she was when he last saw her in January, "beautiful, happy and full of life."

Former Neighbor Says He Tipped Police
OSBI: Lester Hobbs' Vehicle, 2 Bodies Found Near Lake Thunderbird

NORMAN, Okla. -- Two people who knew Lester Hobbs when he lived in Norman said they told investigators exactly where to look when Aja Johnson was first declared missing.

Gene Pierce said Hobbs was his neighbor several years ago.

“I called (the Cleveland County Sheriff's office) and they never went and checked it," he said. "Maybe that girl’s life could have been saved if they would have went and checked it.”

However, Cleveland County Undersheriff Rhett Burnett said his office doesn't have any record of Pierce calling.

Burnett said the only tips his deputies worked came from OSBI.

Bobbie Ford said he is friends with Hobbs' former stepson and used to sleep over when Hobbs lived in the neighborhood.

“I called (Norman police) and said I know where he used to live. He has a lot of friends there. I’m sure he’s going to come back," said Ford. "...and for them to come look and ask people, and they said they don’t have the manpower or resources to come out here.”

Both men said the car was hidden in the woods but that they told investigators to search that precise area.

Norman Police spokeswoman Jennifer Newell said police searched the general area where people told them Hobbs could be hiding.

However, she said they did not find him.

When asked why Norman Police did not put up a helicopter to search the area, Newell said after searching the ground, police did not have any reason to believe Hobbs was in the area.

Man Talks About Finding Car, Bodies
Jerry Spotts Could See Small Body Beside Car

POSTED: 2:00 pm CDT March 30, 2010
UPDATED: 5:40 pm CDT March 30, 2010
NORMAN, Okla. --
The man who found Lester Hobbs' Toyota Paseo in a wooded part of an area near Lake Thunderbird spotted not only the vehicle, but a small body as well.

Jerry Spotts, 80, said he was riding an all-terrain vehicle Monday on his land near the lake when he noticed the vehicle. He said that when he got closer to the car he could see a small body wrapped in a blanket lying on the ground.

That body is believed to have been Aja Johnson, 7, kidnapped by Lester Hobbs two months ago, authorities said.

Spotts said he could see the top of a head and noticed the body was badly decomposed. He added that he had seen reports of 7-year-old Aja Johnson and Lester Hobbs in the news and immediately called 911.

He said police were on the scene within minutes.

Spotts said the land is heavily wooded. He believes Hobbs had some knowledge of the area in order to drive his car to that spot.
He said he doesn't want any praise for finding the car and the bodies.

Spotts said he's just glad Aja's family can finally have peace.

I can hardly even look at her sweet face...right now...this is just so sad.  NO child should go through this.  If the government doesn't do something about ensuring that our children are safe...within reason...(I know that everyone cannot be protected)...but, if the government doesn't crack down on people that show classic signs and have records...and have injunctions against them...and so on...then we the people may end up taking matters into our own hands.  I praise people like Amber's family...that watched Gardner...because the police "couldn't"...I praise people like Betty Gilroy...who pushed and pushed until JAG was kicked out of the neighborhood.  There are tons of people...including Scared Monkeys...to praise...for keeping awareness...for searching for answers...for pushing for stricter laws...and so on...but, without the government support...with laws not only passed...but, enforced...then, our children are not safe...and I know that I am so sick of reading about sweet innocent children being taken WAY too soon.  I myself...would enforce the eye for an eye law...I bet several sex offenders would be "rehabilitated" real quick.  Though, I do believe there is mental illness in some of the criminals...I believe that there is more of lack of accountability...sense of entitlement...lack of consequences...and plain evil...in most.  I'd rather be wrong on a few...and save an innocent child...then play this game where criminals have more rights than the law abiding public.  Not thanking Lester Hobbs in ANY way...but, I am glad that he saved my friends and family in Oklahoma money...and a spot in prison for one of these other losers...I just hope that he didn't die too fast...and was able to feel pain...and I hope that his family "that knew nothing"...carry guilt and sorrow the rest of their days.  And for those of Aja's family that did NOTHING while this little girl lived like this...shame on you...I am sure that your guilt and sorrow will not go away anytime soon.  That may seem a bit harsh...I am sure that they are hurting now...I just wish that people would think BEFORE the tragedy...and tragedies like this don't just happen...there are BIG red flags...all over the place...For those that did help Aja...I am sorry for you...

OSBI Defends Investigation in Aja Johnson Case
Posted: Mar 30, 2010 8:11 PM CDT Updated: Mar 31, 2010 8:20 AM CDT
By Colleen Chen, NEWS 9

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said they did everything they could in the Aja Johnson case. Some tipsters said they were not taken seriously when they told investigators to check out the area where Aja's and Lester Hobbs' bodies were found Monday.

The white Toyota Paseo the public has been asked to keep an eye out for during the last two months was easily spotted by SkyNEWS 9 HD in a heavily wooded area near Lake Thunderbird. OSBI said they never flew over the location because there were never clear cut leads to cause them to do so.

"We have to have a lead to go to a specific area. We can't just fly all over Oklahoma. We did fly over parts of Geronimo, and we flew over the Stroud area," said OSBI Spokeswoman Jessica Brown.

Family members of Lester Hobbs said they suggested the OSBI search in the area where the car and the bodies were ultimately found. Hobbs once lived nearby and his parents are buried in a cemetery just up the road.

Bobie Ford said he used to be friends with Lester Hobbs, and claimed he also tried to get OSBI to search the location.

"What was his tip? So it was a hunch? A gut feeling? We need leads we need they've been spotted somewhere because we're getting hundreds of those, we just saw them here. We have to run with what's most immediate," Brown said in response to the allegations.

Brown said she shouldn't have to defend the OSBI and thinks any public criticism is misdirected.
"We had our people working 18 hour days continuously seven days a week through ice storms. We should be getting accolades for doing as much as we did. We are heartbroken it turned out this way. What we should be focused on is Lester Hobbs. He's the one who perpetrated the crimes," Brown said.

Norman Police assisted OSBI on the case and said they patrolled the area at least three times after receiving tips that Hobbs may return, but they never found anything.

Bodies found in Oklahoma may be those of man, stepdaughter

06:43 AM CDT on Wednesday, March 31, 2010
The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY – Aja Johnson's mother and father each went to court to prevent Lester Hobbs from seeing the 7-year-old girl, his stepdaughter. Both failed, and now she's dead.
Tonya Hobbs told the court in August she feared that Hobbs, her estranged husband, would crush the girl's skull with a hammer. J.J. Johnson, who had temporary custody of his daughter, told a judge in November that Hobbs had already hurt the girl and he feared he would do it again.

Still, Johnson let the girl's mother take her to a birthday party, and Tonya Hobbs took the girl to visit Hobbs. On the weekend of Jan. 24, police say, Lester Hobbs bludgeoned his estranged wife to death, kidnapped the girl and disappeared.

Authorities believe they found the pair Monday when a landowner driving through a wooded area near a Norman lake found the decomposing bodies of a man and a girl, along with Tonya Hobbs' missing Toyota Paseo.

Hobbs "probably got a 24-hour jump on law enforcement before anyone knew he was missing," said Jessica Brown, a spokeswoman for the state Bureau of Investigation. "It's possible she [Aja] was already dead by then. We don't know, and I'm not sure anyone will ever know."

Norman police said it appeared the two had been dead at least a month, but a spokeswoman for the state medical examiner's office said it might be impossible to determine the exact time.

The cause of death has not been released.

Tonya Hobbs filed a petition for a protective order against her estranged husband in August but failed to appear for a court hearing, so the case was dropped.
In November, an Oklahoma County judge approved an emergency temporary order granting Johnson custody of the girl and prohibiting unsupervised visits with the girl's mother or any contact with Lester Hobbs.

“I called (the Cleveland County Sheriff's office) and they never went and checked it," he said. "Maybe that girl’s life could have been saved if they would have went and checked it.”

However, Cleveland County Undersheriff Rhett Burnett said his office doesn't have any record of Pierce calling.

The arrogance of investigators.. astounding.

It is the same crap in Escondido.. LE does not listen.. They are too Big Ego-ed to listen.
names and addresses handed to them and yet a year passes and another person murdered.
The culprit was there before there eyes operating the whole time.

It is beyond frustrating.

FBI: OSBI declined assistance in search for girl

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An FBI spokesman says the agency's offer to help search for a missing 7-year-old girl was turned down by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

But an OSBI official says an FBI agent was involved in the search for Aja Johnson and her suspected abductor - Lester Hobbs. The bodies of the two were found Monday near Lake Thunderbird in east Norman - about two months after they had disappeared.

FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said Thursday the agency offered its Child Abduction Response Team but the offer was declined.

OSBI agent-in-charge Richard Goss says an FBI agent did work with the OSBI at the command post in the early days of the investigation. Goss says the agent told state authorities they were doing everything that's on a checklist the abduction team uses.

Aja's Grandmother Visits Scene
Alice Dunkin Meets With Man Who Found Girl's Body

NORMAN, Okla. -- The grandmother of Aja Johnson visited the site where the 7-year-old girl's body was found this week.

Alice Dunkin came to the field in south Norman where Jerry Spotts, 80, noticed an unusual vehicle while riding an ATV and called 911. Aja Johnson's body was found inside the white Toyota Paseo that police have been looking for since January.

The girl had been missing for nine weeks after her mother was found slain in Geronimo. Police said Lester Hobbs killed Aja's mother and then kidnapped her. Hobbs was also found dead in the vehicle.

Dunkin also had a chance to meet with Spotts on Thursday. She said it was the only way the family could say thank you.

"If it hadn't been for you, we may never have found her," Dunkin said.

Spotts led Dunkin and Aja's aunt, Tisha Dunkin, to the site.

"It's hard to see where it's at," Alice Dunkin said. "But I wanted to see it."

Tisha Dunkin said she was initially furious after visiting the site.

"He left her out, wraps her in a blanket, throws her outside the car, gets back in and closes the doors and everything for himself," she said. "I know she had to stand there and watch her mother be killed and now, I'm standing right where her body was laying at. That's a clump of her hair. I know it is."

She said finding a little bit of her hair brought peace.

"It's the last thing I have of her," Tisha Dunkin said.

Alice Dunkin said Lester Hobbs fooled her.

"If you ever talk to him, he'd be the nicest man on earth. He turns out to be the devil in disguise," she said.

The medical examiner's office is still trying to find out how Aja and Hobbs died. Toxicology reports should be ready in about six weeks.

Aja Johnson's funeral is scheduled for 1:30 p.m Wednesday at the Vondel L. Smith Chapel on South Western Boulevard. The family has set up a memorial fund and any metro Bancfirst locations will accept donations.

Under subpoena, Oklahoma killer Lester Hobbs’ kin finally reveal past of threats

LAWTON — In the abduction case of Aja Johnson, where every minute possibly meant the difference between life and death, the relatives of her abductor proved "uncooperative,” investigators said.

Five of Lester Hobbs’ relatives refused to take polygraph tests, said Richard Goss, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent in charge. Those relatives were forced by subpoena to appear in Comanche County court on March 26 for questioning behind closed doors.

District Attorney Fred Smith and two of his assistants conducted the questioning.

Among those questioned was Mildred Anderson of Geronimo — Hobbs’ sister and matriarch of the family, Smith said.

"There was some unusual conduct that raised some red flags for the OSBI, so they requested the polygraphs to clear up a few matters,” Smith said. "They initially agreed to take the polygraph tests, but then failed to show up. Then they refused ... at that point OSBI began to see them as uncooperative.

"Basically, we wanted to gather some general information so we could exclude them from aiding and abetting in that crime.”

The questioning lasted six hours.

Smith learned that Hobbs had not only threatened at various times to kill his estranged wife and Aja’s mother, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs, and her children but also his brother, Buck Hobbs.

Those threats preceded a Jan. 23 family dinner at Anderson’s house that included Lester Hobbs. Aja also was at the dinner.

"The strange thing is all these people are now gathered in one place down in Geronimo,” Smith said. "Who’s invited to dinner? Buck. Who comes down from Oklahoma City? Tonya. It was like pouring gasoline on the fire.”

The day after that family dinner, Anderson found the bludgeoned body of Tonya Hobbs in Lester Hobbs’ trailer home. Lester Hobbs, Aja and Tonya Hobbs’ 1992 white Toyota Paseo also were gone.

"Mildred Anderson told me there were several places Lester could have went to hide,” Smith said. "I think that’s an important point, especially in light of the fact OSBI is getting hammered on this point.”

Anderson offered three possible locations: Mexico, a remote spot in the Texas Panhandle that Lester had discovered during his travels and California, where he had an "anti- social” brother who could "survive in the wilderness like a mountain man,” Smith said.

FBI, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation differ on handling of Aja Johnson search

EDMOND — The FBI offered the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation the assistance of its Child Abduction Response Team in the search for 7-year-old Aja Johnson, but their proposal was declined, FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said Thursday.

"We offered our assistance,” Johnson said.

"That offer was declined. I don’t know why, but we were disappointed and frustrated our offer for assistance was declined.”

The Child Abduction Response Team is composed of special agents from across the nation who are experienced in such cases.

Johnson said the team is on call 24 hours a day and can be flown in at any time to assist local agencies with abduction cases.

OSBI agent-in-charge Richard Goss said the FBI was involved in the case.

"In fact, we had an FBI agent working with us in the command post during the early days of the investigation,” Goss said.

Goss said the FBI agent had a checklist the abduction team uses, "and he told us we were already doing everything on that list.”

The U.S. Marshals Service also played a key role in the investigation, overseeing the fugitive aspect of the search, Goss said.

Helicopters used in search, official says
Aja Johnson’s remains were discovered by a property owner Monday in woods east of Norman near Lake Thunderbird. Her decomposing body lay on the ground under a faded red blanket.
The body of her abductor, Lester Williams Hobbs, was nearby — inside the 1992 white Toyota Paseo that once belonged to the girl’s mother, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs.

Investigators said Lester Hobbs beat to death his estranged wife, Tonya, with a hammer Jan. 24 in Comanche County before fleeing with Aja.

Authorities say they don’t know what means Lester Hobbs used to kill Aja or himself.

The bodies were found in a small clearing on rural, private property — less than a mile from where Lester Hobbs’ parents are buried at the Denver Cemetery and about the same distance from where he once lived with a former wife.

An OSBI airplane, U.S. Marshals Service airplane and Oklahoma Highway Patrol helicopters were used at various times during the two-month investigation, Goss said.

At no point were aerial searches conducted over the woods where the bodies were recovered, he said.

Manned surveillance, however, was done nearby at the Denver Cemetery.

"There’s more than 67,000 square miles in the state of Oklahoma,” Goss said. "It’s impossible to think we could have covered every square inch.”

ME's Office: Hobbs Possibly Committed Suicide

More details about the tragic death of seven-year-old Aja Johnson and her kidnapper Lester Hobbs are becoming available.

Their bodies were discovered Monday in Cleveland County. The state Medical Examiner's office says it is treating Aja's death as a homicide and Hobbs' as a suicide. Pending toxicology reports will help confirm the cause of death. The M.E.'s office says Hobbs didn't have any stab wounds or a gunshot wound, so it is possible he overdosed.

Police say Hobbs killed Aja's mother, Tonya, before kidnapping Aja. The M.E.'s office has made its final ruling in her death-- they say she was beaten and stabbed.

Aja's family talks about abuse (with video)

OKLAHOMA CITY - As Alice Dunkin tries to hold back the tears, she opens up about the man who reportedly kidnapped then killed her granddaughter, seven-year-old Aja Johnson. For a couple of months Dunkin lived with Aja, Aja's mother Tonya Hobbs, and Aja's stepfather Lester Hobbs. Dunkin told us she called the Oklahoma Department of Human Services a few times after she saw Lester Hobbs abuse Aja.

Dunkin says, "He's left bruises on Aja and I speak my mind and he didn't care for me because I speak my mind you know."

Dunkin wasn't the only one warning DHS about the abuse. Aja's father, J.J. Johnson, was battling for custody.

He says Lester was, "Forcing my daughter to eat jalapeno peppers and making her go out and pick up rocks and clean them with a toothbrush." He says DHS employees took Aja and her sister from the Hobbs' home and placed them in a foster home once on allegations Lester took a bath with the girls. Johnson says, "And yet they placed my daughter in that kind of harms way. I just don't understand Oklahoma's Department of Human Services. How do they justify that?"

We spoke with officials at DHS about Aja Johnson's case. They wouldn't comment citing confidentiality restrictions. They say they can't talk about her case because no one's been charged with her death.

J.J. Johnson eventually won custody of his daughter, but says Aja's time with Hobbs took it's toll. Her family also told us some of the key people involved Aja's case are the same DHS employees who worked on the Kelsey Briggs case. After months of documented abuse Kelsey was placed back into an abusive home. She died of abuse in 2005 at age two.

Dunkin says, "Kelsey and now Aja. If DHS had done their job, they might have both been alive today."

Aja Johnson’s dad says note revealed killer’s ire (with video)

EDMOND — Lester William Hobbs left only a violent legacy, including the killing of 7-year-old Aja Johnson, and a note for the world to read when he killed himself in a wooded area east of Norman.

J.J. Johnson said Wednesday he learned of the note’s contents from investigators, adding that it only revealed the true character of his daughter’s killer.

"Lester went on in the note ... blaming all these people for his problems — Tonya, myself, his parents,” said Johnson, Aja’s father. "He named off all these people. Everyone but himself. What a coward.”

Now Johnson is left to bury his daughter.

Authorities, meanwhile, confirmed Wednesday what many already thought: The bodies discovered Monday by a local property owner were indeed those of Aja and Hobbs. Fingerprints and tattoos were used to positively identify Hobbs, while Aja’s dental records confirmed her identity.

"As far as cause and manner of death, our pathologists are still working on making those determinations, they are both still pending, and I believe we are waiting on toxicology screening … that could be anywhere from three weeks to six weeks,” said Cherokee Ballard, spokeswoman for the state medical examiner’s office.

"When a body is decomposing, it makes it difficult.”

Pathologists also stressed that it might be difficult to tell how long the bodies were at the location — a spot less than a mile from where Hobbs once lived and his parents are buried.

For Johnson, the search for elusive answers won’t ease the pain of viewing her remains.

"I don’t want to see her that way,” Johnson said. "She’s been lying out there ... . All that’s left is hair and a skeleton. I don’t want to see that. I want to remember her like the last time I saw her, walking out of the house, saying, ‘I love you, Daddy.’”

Girl may have witnessed killing
Investigators said they think the girl witnessed Lester Hobbs beat her mother, Tonya LeAnn Hobbs, to death in January inside a Geronimo trailer home. OSBI agent-in-charge Richard Goss theorized that Aja was perhaps even "lying by her mother’s side on a sofa.”
A hammer was later recovered at the Geronimo murder scene — a weapon investigators think was used to kill Tonya Hobbs.

In a 2009 request in Lincoln County for a protective order, she wrote: "My husband has threatened to hit my daughters in the head with a hammer and kill them. He also threatened to kill me if I left him.”

Johnson wonders whether Tonya stepped in front of Aja to protect her from Lester.

"I was a pallbearer at her funeral, and they couldn’t put her hands on her chest because they were so badly mangled. That’s how much she tried to defend herself.”

Father of Kidnapping Victim Remembers Daughter (with video)
KSBI News

"She was just a wonderful 7-year-old girl, happy, loving. She was just a little sponge absorbing everything she could. She just enjoyed life," said J.J. Johnson, Aja's father.

J.J. Johnson's little girl who loved life had hers taken way too soon.

Although Johnson still has many questions, he says now he is finally at peace.

For weeks he's been having premonitions, like someone was trying to tell him something and now he says that feeling is gone.

"Just like someone was there that hadn't been there you know but now I realize that was Aja and Tonya trying to help me find closure to all of this and I believe in a spiritual way they probably helped move Jerry out there," said Johnson.

Jerry Spott found Hobbs' white paseo and 2 bodies in Norman on Monday.

Johnson says this discovery finally gave his family closure.

He says even though she's gone, his sweet and spunky little girl will never be forgotten.

"I can still hear her little voice saying, I love you daddy," said Johnson.

Hobbs' ex-wife speaks (with video)

NORMAN, OK -- For the first time, we hear one woman's chilling account of her 13-year marriage to Lester Hobbs. He's the man accused of kidnapping and killing 7-year-old Aja Johnson. Authorities believe her body was found Monday in a wooded area near Lake Thunderbird. Tuesday, authorities towed away the car that Hobbs allegedly used to abduct the girl. They believe he also killed himself inside this vehicle.

Hobbs' ex-wife said her testimony put Hobbs in prison several years ago.

She said he'd abused her for years and he told her that if he ever went to prison for it, he'd hunt her down and kill her; as soon as Hobbs and Aja went missing this woman went into hiding.

"I knew he was out there somewhere," Sherrill Campbell said.

She was convinced he was in a place the two of them knew very well.

Campbell lived there with him for 13 years, less than a mile from where the car was found.

It was a car well-known across the country and inside it was a little girl who seemingly vanished without a trace, until Jerry Spotts made a shocking discovery.

"I could tell it was a white car and there was a body beside the car," Spotts said. "So, I just backed away and called 911."

He stumbled upon the infamous white Toyota while out surveying his land, immediately recognized the car, and on the passenger's side on the ground, he saw a body.

"It was covered with a blanket. I could tell it was a small body and all I could see was the head," Spotts said. "I could tell it was decomposed pretty bad."

It was an end no one wanted and an end Sherrill is convinced she was almost a part of after Lester's family called authorities.

"The police department in Norman called me and told me that one of his family members had called and said they were afraid for my life," she said. "[They] said he had just killed somebody and was coming to hunt for me."

She says she'll never forget the abuse she suffered for more than a decade with Hobbs.

"He beat me with extension cords and held a machete to the back of my neck," Sherrill said. "I was in fear of my life. The last thing he told me when I saw him in prison was that he was going to hunt me down and kill me."

She is still in hiding and still trying to come to terms with what happened.

Oklahoma - OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A partial autopsy report on 7-year-old Aja Johnson says the girl died a "violent, unusual or unnatural" death. The girl's body was found last week near Norman with the body of Lester Hobbs. Police believe Hobbs abducted the girl and killed her then himself after killing his estranged wife - Tonya Hobbs - on Jan. 24. The partial autopsy report released Monday says Aja Johnson suffered cuts to her neck - but does not give a suspected cause of death.

A report on Hobbs also says he died a violent death but does not list a cause. The autopsy report on Tonya Hobbs says she was stabbed in the abdomen and neck and beaten in the head with a heavy instrument - possibly a hammer.

After reading the latest posts (articles)...well, I really couldn't finish reading them...it was too difficult...I pray that God is a vengeful God...I pray that there really is a hell that lasts FOREVER...and that Hobbs is placed in the hottest part of it.  I would go even as far to say that I pray that this hell...includes tortures that we have never heard of or could even imagine... I am not one to feel like that...though I am angered by anyone that harms a child...THIS MAN WAS EVIL...PURE EVIL! "...the girl died a "violent, unusual or unnatural" death."  I am just sick right now!

I would think he either stabbed or shot himself. I hope he lingered on and on and felt every bit of the pain it would cause.

I pray that little Aja's spirit left her body before this monster killed her. I pray an angel took her straight to heaven and she felt nothing. She was a beautiful child, just so pretty. Heartbreaking ending.

Causes pending
Partial autopsy reports were released Monday for Aja Johnson and Lester Hobbs. Cause and manner of death are still pending while the medical examiner awaits results of toxicology testing. The reports released Monday do not give an estimated date of death, but list the type of death for both as "violent, unusual or unnatural.”
The reports describe both bodies as decomposed and mummified. Both bodies were clothed.

The left front side of Aja Johnson’s neck had four to five cuts, exposing the cervical spine, the report said. Medical examiners noted the wounds were cuts, versus tears, and that flesh on the right side of the neck was missing.

Just this short description of Aja's injuries makes me think   Lester Hobbs tortured her.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

Oklahoma (AP) - OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The state Medical Examiner's office says a man accused of abducting a 7-year-old girl who later was found dead committed suicide by apparently ingesting antifreeze. The agency released its autopsy findings on 46-year-old Lester Hobbs on Friday. The nine-page report says Hobbs died of acute ethylene glycol intoxication. Ethylene glycol is a primary ingredient of automobile antifreeze. The bodies of Aja Johnson and Hobbs, who was her stepfather, were found March 29 in a rural part of Norman, along with a missing car that belonged to the girl's mother, Tonya Hobbs. Tonya Hobbs was found dead Jan. 24. When authorities searched in and around the car, they found an empty radiator overfill jug which had been removed from the engine.

It doesn't sound like Lester Hobbs died an easy death:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifreeze
(snip) Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning include severe diarrhea and vomiting; usually farther into the intoxication, signs of delirium, paranoia and intense hallucinations manifest (snip)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_glycol_poisoning
Ethylene glycol poisoning is caused by the ingestion of ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is most commonly found as the primary ingredient of automobile antifreeze  and hydraulic brake fluids. It is a toxic, colorless, odorless, almost nonvolatile liquid with a sweet taste. Following ingestion the symptoms of poisoning follow a three step progression starting with intoxication and vomiting, before causing metabolic acidosis, cardiovascular dysfunction, and finally acute kidney failure.(snip)

Signs and symptoms

Symptoms of ethylene glycol poisoning usually follow a three-step progression, although poisoned individuals will not always develop each stage.[3]

    * Stage 1 (0.5 to 12 hours) consists of neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms; people may appear to be intoxicated, exhibiting symptoms such as dizziness, incoordination of muscle movements, nystagmus, headaches, slurred speech, and confusion. Irritation to the stomach may cause nausea and vomiting.[3] Over time, the body metabolizes ethylene glycol into other toxins.
    * Stage 2 (12 to 36 hours) is a result of accumulation of organic acids formed by the metabolism of ethylene glycol and consists of increased heart rate, high blood pressure, hyperventilation, and metabolic acidosis. Additionally low calcium levels in the blood, overactive muscle reflexes, muscle spasms, QT interval prolongation, and congestive heart failure may occur. If untreated, death most commonly occurs during this period.[3]
    * Stage 3 (24 to 72 hours) of ethylene glycol poisoning is the result of kidney injury. Symptoms include acute tubular necrosis, red blood cells in the urine, excess proteins in the urine, lower back pain, decreased production of urine, absent production of urine, elevated blood level of potassium, and acute kidney failure.[10][11] If kidney failure occurs it is typically reversible, although weeks or months of supportive care including hemodialysis may be required before kidney function returns.[3]

Horrific abuse marked last three years of Aja Johnson’s life

Thursday, May 27, 2010

DHS FAILED aja johnson in every single way possible; just as responsible for her horrific life and death as lester hobbs.

http://armenianladydentist.blogspot.com/2010/05/dhs-failed-aja-johnson-in-every-single.html (http://armenianladydentist.blogspot.com/2010/05/dhs-failed-aja-johnson-in-every-single.html)

BY RANDY ELLIS     Oklahoman
Published: May 27, 2010

Records show the state Department of Human Services received seven reports of abuse and neglect in the two years leading up to Aja’s abduction, but the agency pushed for months to keep Aja and her stepsister in Hobbs’ home, according to a death review report issued by the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth.

Beth Scott, a DHS spokeswoman, said the state agency tries to assist parents in keeping families together when workers believe children can be kept safe, but determining whether children will be safe is often not an easy task.

The bodies of Hobbs, 47, and Aja, 7, were found near Norman on March 29, more than two months after both disappeared and Aja’s mother was found dead in Hobbs’ motor home in Geronimo. The state medical examiner ruled Hobbs committed suicide by consuming antifreeze after apparently killing his wife and stepdaughter.

A family friend was granted custody of Aja’s stepsister and filed guardianship papers in February.

Aja, stepsister both spent time in foster care
The new report shows Aja was repeatedly abused and required psychiatric care in the years leading up to her death.

Aja told authorities in November that when her biological father sent her clothes, Hobbs cut them up and made her carry the ripped clothes around.

Hobbs also would grab her by her hair and make her clean the floor with a toothbrush, she reported.

Aja’s stepsister said Hobbs also "whipped them with a paddle and rammed Aja’s head into a wall.”

Aja and her stepsister were placed in a foster home in July 2006, but DHS returned the girls to Hobbs’ home in May 2007 for a trial reunification, the report states.

Problems surfaced almost immediately.

In July 2007, a Comprehensive Home-Based Services (CHBS) worker documented that Aja’s mother reported Hobbs had been throwing lit firecrackers into the girls’ bedroom to wake them in the morning. The worker told Hobbs to stop doing that because it was a fire hazard.

The worker also reported Hobbs admitted spanking the children with a flexible ruler and quoted a defiant Hobbs as saying, "if DHS doesn’t like the way that he disciplines his children, they can take them back and raise the children themselves.”

A Lincoln County DHS worker told Hobbs the next day that "as a parent he had the right to spank Aja,” but if he started leaving bruises on the children "it would be a different situation.”

Aja and her stepsister were removed briefly from the home on July 20, 2007, because of a crisis in the home that required law enforcement intervention, but they were returned four days later. A week later, DHS recommended that the children continue living in the Hobbs home in DHS custody.

A Lincoln County judge approved continuation of the reunification plan.

In September 2007, Aja reported to a CHBS worker that Hobbs had used a knife to cut up all the new clothes her biological father had given her. The worker also documented that Hobbs had slashed Aja’s mattress and sheets with a knife because he was angry with her and had gotten into a fight with a neighbor and threatened to stab the person.

The worker quizzed Hobbs about bruises found on Aja in late June 2007, and quoted Hobbs as saying he had been angry with Aja and "probably hit her too hard.”

First report made in 2004
The first official allegation of abuse was filed in September 2007, when a complaint was filed with DHS over a 3-inch by 4-inch bruise on then 4-year-old Aja’s back. The reporting individual said Aja initially said Hobbs had caused the bruise by whipping her but later said the bruise was caused by a dog jumping on her.

It also was reported that Aja had drawn a picture of a naked man and stated she had taken a lot of baths with her stepfather.

A DHS worker documented the bruises the next day and said Aja stated Hobbs had told her not to let anyone see them. The worker said Aja denied bathing with her stepfather.

DHS ended the trial reunification and returned the girls to foster care on Sept. 26, 2007.

A month later, however, a Lincoln County judge approved another reunification plan to be implemented after the parents completed parenting and marital counseling sessions. The children were placed back in the Hobbs home in March 2008 for another trial reunification.

Lincoln County DHS workers stated in May 2008 they thought the "children were conditionally safe” based on their evaluation of risk factors but said Aja needed to be evaluated because she continued to "make statements that she wanted to burn the house down or cut someone with a knife.”

The children were briefly removed from the home in May 2008 when Aja was placed in an inpatient psychiatric facility and her stepsister was returned to foster care, but nine days later a Lincoln County judge approved a plan for them to be reunited with Hobbs and their mother.

Aja was admitted to a children’s behavioral health hospital because of "violent tendencies toward herself and her family” on June 10, 2008, but was released July 18, 2008, and placed back in the Hobbs home for another trial reunification.

In a bizarre turn of events, a CHBS worker reported on Sept. 30, 2008, that Aja’s mother had called attorneys to report she had relapsed on drugs. Three days later, DHS recommended that a judge release Aja and her sister from DHS supervision and allow both children to continue living in the home of Hobbs and their mother. The judge followed the recommendation and dismissed the case.

Abuse reports continued – with a few even arriving after she disappeared.

Abuse reports in 2009-2010
A number of abuse and neglect reports were made after 2008:

• On April 16, 2009, DHS received a report that Aja, then 6, was engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct with boys and that Hobbs was a threat to the children and anyone who questioned him. DHS concluded the children remained safe.

• On June 17, DHS received a report Aja had been out sick from school for a full week and the reporter was concerned the child might be too bruised to go to school. DHS screened out the report as not indicating abuse.

• On Aug. 5, DHS received an abuse complaint that alleged Hobbs had hit Aja’s mother and taken her car keys to prevent her from leaving. DHS was told Hobbs had forced Aja to scrub the floor with a toothbrush for stealing cookies from his bedroom. When DHS investigated, the children told a worker Hobbs had "threatened to kill them with a hammer.” Aja’s mother told the worker she wanted to leave the house, but no beds were available in area women’s shelters. The worker told the mother she needed to keep Hobbs away from the children or she could be charged with child endangerment. The worker recommended to the district attorney that "Mr. and Mrs. Hobbs not expose the children to any domestic violence and Mrs. Hobbs continue to protect her children from any abuse or neglect.”

• On Sept. 10, DHS received a neglect complaint. DHS was told Aja was exhibiting serious behavior problems and had been abandoned by her mother. DHS screened out the complaint after Aja’s mother was found in a local hospital being treated for a health condition. DHS said someone was caring for the children.

• On Oct. 29, DHS officials in McClain County received a report that Aja had been seriously abused and abandoned by her mother with a friend and neighbor. The reporting party said the mother refused to turn over guardianship of the children because she needed their "checks.” The person also said the mother had returned the children to Hobbs, who had "beat them to a pulp” in the past. DHS screened out the report as not alleging abuse or neglect.

• On Nov. 2, DHS received a seventh report of abuse or neglect involving Hobbs and his wife. When DHS investigated, it found living arrangements had changed and Aja had been taken to live with her biological father and her stepsister was living with a friend. The biological father signed a safety plan to keep Aja away from Hobbs and not allow her to leave his home with her mother. The father was granted a temporary custody order in Oklahoma County civil court.

• DHS subsequently received two more abuse reports — after Aja had been abducted.

***

every single person at DHS who overlooked and allowed this abuse to continue should go on trial for a life sentence. they knew very well what was going on and basically handed this little girl and her sister over to hobbs on a silver platter.

The death of Hobbs at his own hands, only means the world is now a better place.  But IMO, the deaths of Aja and her mother is also at the hands of DHS and the court system!  Each and every DHS worker and the judge/s who signed off on anything re Aja/sister/mom/Hobbs *ought to be* held accountable and charged with the deaths of Aja and her mom.  IMO.

 ::rhino::  Very true, Sister!

These gov't agencies have GOT to be held accountable!  What can we, as concerned citizens, do..... to help ensure that they are??  Write letters?  And if so, to whom, where would we start?  Would those letters even be read or taken seriously?

Thank you for sending a letter!  Have sent some of my own, and haven't heard a squeak out of anyone yet.  Am giving them a few more days cuz of the 3-day weekend and all.  On Monday tho, am sending copies again, then contacting some others.  Might have to take this all the way to the governor or one of the Senators/Congressmen.

Autopsy for Aja Johnson being delivered to her father

The autopsy detailing how Aja Johnson died has been released. The medical examiner's office is to hand-deliver it this afternoon to the home of the slain girl's father.

FROM STAFF REPORTS Oklahoman
Published: June 25, 2010

The state medical examiner has completed the final autopsy report for Aja Johnson, the 7-year-old Oklahoma City child abducted and slain by her stepfather, Lester Hobbs.

The report is expected to be hand-delivered to Aja's father, J.J. Johnson, at 1:15 today at his south Oklahoma City home.

Hobbs took his own life by consuming antifreeze, the state medical examiner's office reported earlier.

The decomposed bodies of Hobbs and Aja were found March 29 in woods southeast of Norman. Hobbs' remains were inside the white Toyota Paseo that state agents said he used in Aja's abduction.

Aja's body was near the car, covered with a blanket. At the time the bodies were found, it had been more than two months since they disappeared.

Tonya Hobbs, Aja's mother and Lester Hobbs' estranged wife, was found dead Jan. 24 inside his motor home in Geronimo, about 100 miles southwest of Oklahoma City.

The discovery of her body led to a statewide manhunt for Lester Hobbs and Aja.

OSBI closing investigation into abduction and killing of Aja Johnson
Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will close its investigation into the deaths of Aja Johnson, 7, her mother and her stepfather
September 10, 2010

GERONIMO — A state agency is wrapping up its investigation into the death of 7-year-old Aja Johnson, and her father says that is fine with him.

"It's time for closure,” he said.

In the past six months, J.J. Johnson has his daughter, his mother and his ex-wife. The loss of Aja was especially unbearable, said Johnson, who lives in Oklahoma City and had custody of the girl at the time of her death.

Aja's remains and those of her stepfather, Lester Hobbs, were found March 29 south of Norman, two months after Aja was abducted and the body of her mother, Tonya Hobbs, 37, was found in Geronimo inside Lester Hobbs' motor home.

Tonya Hobbs and Lester Hobbs were estranged but were apparently spending the weekend together in the motor home parked near his sister's house in Geronimo.

Investigators think Lester Hobbs killed Tonya Hobbs, left in her car with Aja, killed Aja, then took his own life by drinking antifreeze from the car. Hobbs was 46 when his wife's body was found on Jan. 24.

"I buried Tonya in February, Aja in April and my mom in May,” Johnson said.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents returned Aja's backpack and other personal items several weeks ago, he said.

Johnson said he hasn't changed his daughter's bedroom since the last day she stayed there.

OSBI had kept the case open for a while, investigating whether any friends or relatives of Lester Hobbs aided him while he was on the run after Tonya Hobbs' death.

Jessica Brown, OSBI spokeswoman, said this week there is no reason to believe any family members aided Lester Hobbs.

Johnson also doesn't think Hobbs' family had any involvement in the abduction or slaying of his daughter.

"He was just a coward,” Johnson said. "His family didn't even like him.”
