Dive Team, In Training Exercise, Searching McCleary Pond

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- Police and FBI agents are conducting a training exercise, searching a pond and nearby bushes in the area where Lindsey Baum disappeared almost two years ago in the Grays Harbor County town of McCleary.

Undersheriff Rick Scott told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that there has been no new lead in the case to trigger the search, but that a dive team will search the pond and other officers will check nearby grounds.

McCLEARY, Washington (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) -- Eleven-year-old Lindsey Baum vanished on June 26, 2009, walking to a friend’s house in the small town of McCleary, Washington; it's been nearly two years, it's time to end the recurring nightmare, it's time to bring Lindsey home.

Possible suspect's home searched

Three months after Lindsey went missing police searched a man’s home located just outside of McCleary looking for clues into Lindsey’s disappearance. The man became irate and threatened to sue the city and media for what they put him and his family through.

Police found condoms and pornographic magazines while searching his home, but they found no sign of Lindsey. They seized a car which turned up nothing. The reason, his relatives said, that he was targeted was that he gave the wrong answer to a detective.

Detectives insisted they were acting on credible evidence when they obtained a search warrant for the property. Court documents showed the man gave four different answers as to his whereabouts the night Lindsey went missing and exhibited strange behavior. One of his friends told police that the man said he thought she’d been kidnapped, killed and cut up.

The man followed Lindsey’s mother around town and his friends say he was obsessed with the case. A car similar to his was seen in town the night Lindsey vanished. Police acknowledged they understood how difficult the search was on the family but they had to do it for Lindsey.

In August 2010 state prison workcrews were brought in to search for Lindsey.

In October, 16 months after she vanished, inmates were brought in to search for clues into Lindsey’s disappearance. Nothing turned up.

In January 2011 "The Hunt for Lindsey Baum" called for hunters to adopt a piece of land to search for Lindsey. That same month HLN's Nancy Grace began her "Nancy Grace: America's Missing" with Lindsey's story.

In April 2011 police and FBI agents conducted a training exercise, searching a pond and nearby bushes in the area where Lindsey went missing. The sheriff said there had been no new leads to trigger the search but that a dive team would be searching a pond and officers would be searching nearby grounds.

The undersheriff said police, sheriff’s department, and FBI continue to search for Lindsey.

Her supporters continue to work to keep her picture and story alive.There has been some frustration among supporters over the past few months. It seems everytime they put up new flyers, someone comes along and rips them down.

Perhaps people don't realize how much time, money, and effort goes into putting up flyers and keeping them updated. As they fade, new ones must be made, put into plastic sheets, and stapled carefully in order to protect them from the weather.

Country singer Whitney Duncan, whose 19-year-old cousin was abducted earlier this week, said, “Lord, have mercy. I feel like I’m walking in a nightmare.”

That's likely how Lindsey’s mother, Melissa Baum, has been feeling for nearly two years.

Mason County sheriff Chief Deputy Dean Byrd said the remains were discovered in a wooded area near the intersection of Lynch Road and Nordquist Road. A crew hired to thin trees in the area made the discovery around 10 a.m.

SHELTON, Wash. -- The Mason County coroner has identified the remains found in a wooded area on Tuesday as that of a man who'd been missing.

The coroner identified the remains as that of Allen Lee Mosier, 37, of Shelton, who had been missing since Sept. 28, 2006. The coroner used dental records to positively identify the remains.

Reward increased to $35,000 in Lindsey Baum disappearance

MCCLEARY, Wash. - The reward for information about a young McCleary girl who vanished without a trace in 2009 has been increased to $35,000, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Department announced Friday.

The increased reward comes two years after Lindsey Baum disappeared while walking home from a friend's house on June 26, 2009 in the small town, population 1,550. The reward previously stood at $30,000.

Missing girl's mom: 'Not giving up till we find her'

MCCLEARY, Wash. - The mother of a young girl who vanished without a trace two years ago on Sunday says she sometimes dreams about her daughter coming home.

"Different scenarios, but she's home, and I can hold her," says Melissa Baum, mother of missing Lindsey Baum, through her heartache and tears.

"I look forward to her coming home," Melissa says. "I still believe she's out there - not giving up till we find her."

Melissa doesn't live in McCleary anymore. But on Sunday she and some friends and family members met at the town's lone park, marking the somber day her daughter disappeared.

The visit brings mixed feelings, but it helped her to remind others to keep looking for Lindsey.

A donor recently added another $5,000 to the reward for finding Lindsey - making it $35,000 for anyone who knows where she is.

And in just a couple of weeks, her family and friends invite everyone to come back to the park in McCleary - to celebrate what will be Lindsey's 13th birthday.

I have not been here much lately, but everyday is a search for Lindsey. I was just checking the updates on her earlier. Apparently the Honda Ridgeline that was seen in the footage from the gas station, the FBI investigator said it's silver not white. I'm hoping that bringing up the old footage of people the FBI would like to speak with if they saw anything, will bring some individuals forward. It's already been 2 years too many.

Yesterday I said a prayer for little Lindsey. I had no idea where McCleary was until I drove to my daughters house who recently moved to Shelton. I just felt chills as I drove past the turn off realizing how close I live to McCleary. The land around there is so wooded with lots of tall brush just acres and acres of it. Very mountainous too.

I don't know about McCleary but I think Shelton is a little bigger town. My daughter was telling me people don't even lock their doors at night or cars for that matter. Everyone seems to know everyone including business owners. This just blew me away not locking doors. I do not understand how people can be so trusting.

I will continue to pray for little Lindsey and her family.

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- Friends and family gathered on Lindsey Baum's 13th birthday Thursday evening to renew their pledge to find her.

There was a birthday cake, balloons, and everything you need to celebrate such an occasion on hand. But Lindsey was not there -- missing now for more than two years.

Some of those attending the party were from the State Patrol, the FBI, local police and sheriff's departments -- all members of the task force trying to find Lindsey, all making sure Lindsay is not forgotten.

"So we're celebrating her 13th birthday, hoping that she knows out there that we're celebrating it with her and that we haven't forgotten her," said her mother Melissa Baum.

YW, KarmaRoundUp.  Yes, Beth is an amazing woman!  She made a promise to find justice for Natalee and has extended that love and determination to help other missing persons.  When I watched the episode on Lindsey, it was like I went back in time to when she first went missing--hoping against hope that she will be found; but it ended the same way--Lindsey is still missing. Where are you, Lindsey?

Details of Disappearance:

Lindsey disappeared on June 26,2009 while on her way home  from her friends house in McCleary, WA at about 9:30 in the evening. This was one of the longest days of the year and didn’t get dark until around 10:30 that night. It was still daylight out as she left her friends house for the short 5-10 minute walk home.

She never made it home that night.

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- Detectives investigating the mysterious disappearance of Lindsey Baum served a search warrant at a local business on Tuesday.

The FBI and Grays Harbor sheriff's deputies searched Hartman's Jewelry and Repair located on Fourth Street - the street on which the 10-year-old girl was last seen 28 months ago. They also searched the store owners' home just outside of town.

Deputies said they are not looking for anything specific; they said the search warrant is one in a series being served in an effort to find the missing girl.

Area residents said they are relieved to see the investigation is still active.

"It's both a little unnerving, actually, and I guess comforting that they're still working on the case. That's a good thing," said resident Kim Barkman.

Lindsey Baum disappeared while walking home from a friend's house on June 26, 2009. It was a warm summer evening, and the houses were just a short distance apart.

"When the next thing you know, she vanished," said Melissa Baum, the girl's mother.

There have been numerous searches, scores of people of interest and a $35,000 reward offered, but no arrests have been made in the case.

Through two years of gut-wrenching loss and unfounded leads, Melissa Baum has never lost faith that her daughter would one day come home.

I got the phone call tonight that there was a search warrant put out for Hartman's Jewelry, which the links were posted up already. I was also told that Melissa Baum was on Maury recently (Thank goodness for the extra exposure). The Jewelry store is within a block of where it's reported that Lindsey was last seen. I'm curious as to why, besides the location of the business that this man is being looked at as a person of interest.

I see what you mean Jademoff.  I was looking at the wording of the article grace-land posted again.  It says the store owner is one of "several dozen" people of interest in the case.  It sounds to me it's not just the location of the store that's of interest.

I've been researching, trying to find the program you've mentioned in your post. I haven't found where Melissa Baum was on Maury's show yet, but while I was looking for it, I came across this video and wasn't sure it's been posted before.

McCLEARY, WA) -- FBI officers along with Grays Harbor County sheriff's deputies served a search warrant Tuesday on a McCleary, Washington jewelry store in the continuing search for missing Lindsay Baum.

Detectives searched Hartman's Jewelry and Repair located at 133 South 4th Street in McCleary – the same street in McCleary where then 10-year old Lindsay mysteriously vanished on 26, 2009. while walking home from a friend’s house.

It was a route just a few blocks from home she had taken many times before.

Detectives also searched the store owners' residence, which is located outside of McCleary.

This latest search is one of many that officials have conducted in the ongoing investigation.

In June of 2010, one year after Lindsay vanished, sheriff's deputies and FBI agents spent several hours searching a McCleary home in the 100 block of Fir street and an Easy Storage locker in the same community as part of the ongoing investigation.

It has not been disclosed what, if anything, investigators found at either location that might pertain to the missing girl.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s office sought and obtained search warrants to go through both locations during June 2010, which are connected they said, to a person of interest in the investigation.

Local television broadcast reports at that time said the person of interest in the searches was a 47-year-old man who lives at the home that was searched and who shares the storage unit with the home's owners.

The reports said the man is someone investigators spoke to in the days following Baum's disappearance and that he lives one block off the route she would have been walking to get to her house.

The jewelry shop searched Tuesday has been a fixture in McLeary for years and is along the route Lindsay took day she disappeared.

"I think it's a bunch of crap myself," said neighbor David Belcher. "I don't think the guy is guilty of anything."

Neighbors like Belcher described the shop owner as a husband and father who would not hurt anyone. They believe he is being unfairly targeted.

"If they had anything they would have arrested the guy in the first place instead of being over here making his family and business look bad," Belcher said.

Investigators took photos and bagged evidence at the shop, home and vehicle. Police said the searches were deeper than those they had conducted previously. They would not say what they were looking for, but hinted that searchers would either sharpen their focus on the man or rule him out.

"We're just trying to gather some information that will either lead us in a different direction or have us continue on the path of investigation we're on," Chief Deputy Dave Pimentel of the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office said.

The individual who owns Hartman’s Jewelry Repair and a residence northwest of town is “one of many persons of interest we’ve had contact with over the course of this investigation, which is now in its 20th month,” Pimentel added. The man is not considered a suspect in Lindsey’s disappearance, he added.

Lindsey Baum’s mother, Melissa, said Tuesday afternoon that she was aware of the search, but unaware of what authorities were looking for.

Police and federal agents searched two locations in McClearly on Tuesday in connection with missing child Lindsey Baum. Detectives from the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office along with agents from the FBI, officers from the Washington State Patrol, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and King County Sheriff's Office served search warrants at a jewelry store and the home of a man who lives in town. The man spoke with Thompson and said he has no alibi for the time of Baum's disappearance, so police think he had something to do with it. The man said he didn't and his friends agree. "I don't think he had anything to do with it," said David Belcher. "I think they are grasping at straws myself, but we'll see." There were no arrests, and police said they were just following leads and working their way through evidence.

I don't know if this has anything to do with Lindsey's disappearance at all, but it's interesting the feds are raiding this operation at the same time the search warrants are going on for her disappearance.  Could some of this stuff going on in the underbelly of the town and area have something to do with Lindsey's disappearance?  Or maybe is a coincidence? It will be interesting to see who is connected to this.

Psychedelic mushrooms targeted in federal raid near McCleary

McCLEARY, Washington -- Federal agents and local and state police are executing a search warrant near McCleary as part of a major investigation into illegal psychedelic mushrooms, KIRO 7 South Sound Bureau Chief Richard Thompson reports.

Officials from the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, Washington State Patrol and Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office raided the property, located in a very rural area, while more federal agents targeted other remote locations in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties, a source told Thompson.

Thompson had received tips about the raid and was able to track down the McCleary raid location.

The target of the investigation is psilocybin mushrooms, also known as "magic mushrooms," which are illegal.

Sources told Thompson the raids are part of a long-term and significant investigation.

People who live near the homes said they never suspected a thing.

The Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office and the FBI served search warrants Tuesday on a McCleary jewelry shop and a residence owned by the same man in connection with Lindsey Baum’s disappearance according to Grays Harbor Chief Deputy Dave Pimentel.

Pimentel said the search of Hartman's Jewelry Repair in town and the residence just northwest of McCleary were ongoing as of 4 p.m. Tuesday. The search warrants were served between 11 a.m. and noon, he said.

The individual who owns the buildings being searched is “one of many persons of interest we’ve had contact with over the course of this investigation, which is now in its 20th month,” Pimentel added. The man is not considered a suspect in Lindsey’s disappearance, he added.

Pimentel did not address exactly what authorities are searching for, but said they want to find “any information that would exclude this individual or allow us to continue on this path.” Pimentel cautioned that he does not expect the sheriff’s office to make any imminent arrests in connection with Baum’s disappearance.

How embarrassing for Mr. Hartman. I hope this doesn't have a negative effect on his business. I'm sure he had nothing to do with Lindsey's disappearance and he is a very good jeweler with an excellent reputation.

The point is that reporters are not given the details of any incident, that would allow them to compose, an informative article ! .... That is unless, they are long time "seasoned" reporters, willing to insist on proper details within the realms of common sense, from Officials in the legal fields ..  .... That might even be the threat of obtaining a court order ! .... Law enforcement does not like that......They, even are at odds, with each other and the "under cover" eliments ! !
...That often gets pretty evil, within !

So don't blame the reporters ... Is their employer going to support them ....? Or, would it have to be out of their own pocket ?

As I recall, the original reports indicated that Lindsey's brother (who has some sort of a handicap) had fought with her not long before she disappeared.  That seemed to be hushed up, however, so we don't know if there was any followup.  Did the brother harm Lindsey?  Did the mother then protect the brother? Just what happene

I agree, interviews made need to be conducted again for this case.  More evidence may be the outcome.   I hope this ends soon for all of who loves/cares for this little girl

MCCLEARY, Wash. - Investigators from the FBI and Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office served a search warrant at Hartman Jewelry in McCleary on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the disappearance of Lindsey Baum.

Investigators say the owner of the store is one of "several dozen" people of interest in the case.

There was no major break to lead investigators to the business and police said they have not made any major discoveries at the property.

I'm highly disappointed in the way the media has handled this one, along with the comments from individuals with no involvement or knowledge of the parties being investigated. I suggest those of you who don't know these people, or have any information that leads to finding Lindsey, keep your ignorant opinions and false information to yourselves. This is a stressful time for us all. Our community has truly suffered through this and the mentality will never be the same. The Hartman's have always been a positive influence in our community, extremely involved in fundraisers, donating time and services to all sorts of events. They are kind people and don't deserve the judgement that others are casting on them. Don't jump to conclusions people, it's simply an investigation. You could be next.

The FBI has purposely been making lies about this guy, they claim they were told something and without checking the facts go around to other people that don't even know the guy an tell them fabricated things about him. I must adamantly disagree with lassie69 Tim Hartman is a very upstanding guy and the sexual harrassment charges against him were made by two imbittered former employees that just plain werent smart enough to do the work in his shop and were dismissed! Tim wanted to fight these charges because they were unfounded and he knew he would have won but the insurance company chose to settle! So yes lassie69 is correct in stating that things arent always as they seem! I have known Tim for a few years and many mistake his eccentricity as something else but he is an outstanding master crafsman as a jeweler as well as an outstanding human being who selflessly serves his community as an EMT and trainer of of health care proffessionals! It's sad that people like lassie69 choose to believe petty, unfounded, accusations and heresay about great people like Tim!

Hartman is alot more upstanding than this what lassie69 states. Of the 2 employees that accused him of sexual harassment 1 was fired for costing the company thousands of dollars in repairs and even told a customer the he would accept a homemade quilt for one of the repairs, which she took home for herself. This makes out as employee theft. The other employee was trying to get it on with the male customers offering favors. This woman even went to a friend of his and wanted to rent the property where the paintball site now sits to put in a nude hair styling salon. So lassie69 should make sure they have the facts straight. One good question the FBI and Sheriffs office should answer is where did Lynsey's mother computer disappear to. Its been said she parted out the computer ,the hard drive to one person and the rest to another. The mother even got rid of the bike that the brother had when he was heard threatening her over. And what about the Disneyland trip so soon after her missing.

Pretty irresponsible of King 5 to even run this story. What's the news here? They apparantly didn't find anything and Hartmen is one of dozens of persons of interest in the case? Running this person's name through the public based on nothing doesn't help the investigation. Shame on King 5.

The Hartman's are very community oriented people, and have always supported the school and any cause in need in McCleary. I would certainly hope that this is just a mistake, or that law enforcement is just eliminating them as suspects. They are an outstanding family based on my dealings with them. Lindsey is a neighbor of ours and it pains us to think that someone has done something with her. Her house was just around the corner. Sweet girl. This whole issue has been a bad dream from the beginning, but unfotrunately we wake up every morning and the nightmare doesn't go away. It just makes me so sad.

   
 

I've posted a number of the articles I've found tonight, because each one seems to have a bit of different information.  And I've noticed some have a different slant on one from the other.  I find the comments quite interesting.  I wonder if the tension is mounting and perhaps some townsfolk may be turning on one another before long?  I'd like to see this case busted wide open.  I think there are some that have a good idea what happened to Lindsey, and they are not talking.  It's been too long.  It's not going to go away.  It's time.  JMHO

I will also do a search for anything about the Maury show featuring Melissa Baum, I'm not sure what channel it is on, but I think we can check the network which it is aired on and might be able to back track information on the episodes featured.

I'm glad the case is still active, and on the news during her 2 years (gone too long) missing date, there was someone from the FBI that said people were starting to remember that day and things they saw and were starting to come forward and talk about it.

I prayed for Lindsey this last week, that whether she is still with us or taken from us that a connection be made and she either is found or at least justice served for her. I was sad to see that when I felt the prayer was answered that the Hartman's home and business had a warrant served to search both. They are a very kind family and I'm sad to see that there was enough probable cause to get a warrant to search. When I think back to all the people who were searched, and being able to see the information posted in the warrants as to what sort of information led them to search the prior people, I know investigators have something more than just the location of the store and a couple sexual harassment charges.

Well, I am going to guess that the episode featured on Maury is an older episode, as I could not find anything in his recent archives regarding her being on.

So basically what my friend told me that she saw on the show was the 911 call Melissa made when Lindsey did not return home was played on the show. Another thing is a psychic had talked to Melissa about what they had seen.

YW Jademoff.  There's been so little information in the media in the past couple of months in regard to Lindsey's case I was fearing the case was growing cold, but it looks like they been working behind the scenes.  It's good to see the collaboration of a number of LE agencies working together and that they're working to rule out persons of interest and narrowing the scope/focus of the investigation.   ::rhino::

It's interesting Melissa Baum believes the person that took Lindsey is someone local that she may have known or trusted.  That makes sense.  However, I'm wondering if perhaps a person/persons may have driven up to her and asked her directions or lured her close enough to pull her into a car.  But Melissa may have suspicions that tell her something more and she may be right. 

Jademoff - you and I found the same things searching in regard to Melissa Baum being on Maury's show.  I sure would like to see a clip of Melissa on the show or a transcript if available.  I wonder if the person you got the information from that Melissa was on Maury's show was mistaken and it was another show? 

It does appear that an episode was shown regarding missing children though, but I'm more than happy to double check with my friend as she might have got a name mixed up!

I became a member here right after Lindseys disappearance because I am a local and didn't really care about anything but finding a little girl the same age as mine. I have not wrote much here and I'm not sure who is still here from that time period but I have a question. I was on a local message board and ran across a post from a grays harbor resident that had questioned if it had in fact still been daylight at 9:15 that night. A poster replied that it  was indeed daylight because he was in fact was driving threw mccleary on his way to Shelton at that time on the night Lindsey had disappeared. The only thing he could remember is seeing a few guys setting up a fireworks stand. Now I thought that someone determined the stand came Saturday?  Does anyone know if someone already submitted this information or not? I am also unsure of the rules for posting links, so if you could tell me if I can post a link to my photo album where I have pics of the web information I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Lindsey disappeared on June 26,2009 while walking home in McCleary, WA at about 9:30 in the evening. This was one of the longest days of the year and didn’t get dark until around 10:30 that night. It was still daylight out as she left for the short 5-10 minute walk home.
She never made it home that night.

 I was not implying he had anything to do with Lindsey being missing, I was however thinking his information might be a small piece to add to her case. He is a local, active, seems credible, and his small glimpse of Mccleary that night might be of some importance, since not many people in the town can say they have seen anything. I apologize if it seemed like I thought he might be responsible for anything. I was thinking just the opposite and was hoping someone might contact him to confirm the night if they thought the information might be important.

YW, Mzzz Bee!  Did you get a chance to listen to the psychic and what he was telling Melissa?  I don't know how correct he was, but it was interesting.

Yeah that's the show, I didn't even have to look at the link, my friend mentioned a psychic in there. While I don't know my opinion on psychics, but I had wondered the same thing they mentioned. When my friend told me a white van, I immediately thought of a work vehicle. And then I also thought of the brown van that was at the Shell station in the videos that were on the news with the two men they wanted to talk to in case they saw something.

Oh my gosh! I want to send the maury show an e-mail about the footage from the shell mart they posted up and said 'And this man of suspicion'! Shame on the show! Law Enforcement are looking to talk to the man to see if he saw something, not because they want to accuse him.

You're right, Jademoff.  The police just want to talk to him!  In my opinion, Maury was unfamiliar with the case.  Melissa even corrected him when he said that Lindsey walked past the gas station.  That's something that we don't know; she wasn't captured on the video camera.

I thought the Honda Ridgeline in the footage already had the owner identified. I know in some of the footage I've seen, the FBI mentioned that though the Ridgeline appears to be white it is actually silver.

I don't remember reading any article that said that the owner of the Honda Ridgeline was identified.  I guess that I'll have to back track and check on the color of the Ridgeline and the unidentified persons at the station.

June 26 marks one year since 10-year-old Lindsey Baum disappeared from McCleary, Washington while walking home from a friend’s house.

Surveillance video we are making available to the public might help us develop new leads in the case.

The video clips are from a Shell-Mart gas station in McCleary and were recorded at approximately 9:30 p.m. on June 26, 2009—about the time Lindsey went missing.

The footage shows a man, accompanied by a young boy, walking into the gas station and later leaving, and also shows the newer-model white Honda Ridgeline truck the man was driving. Both the man and the boy could be important witnesses regarding the disappearance because they were in the vicinity when Lindsey went missing.

This is the video I found the investigator saying the Ridgeline is silver and not white. Which is what made me think that the owner of it came forward to talk to investigators, but with Melissa having them show it on Maury, made me think the owner wasn't identified. But then who knows if investigators let Melissa know if the owner of the vehicle was identified and they came forward and talk to them.

About 30 volunteers spent eight hours Saturday in Capitol State Forest and surrounding areas after receiving several anonymous emails that warranted investigation, said Jennifer Mau, organizer for the Search and Seek Association.

Mau refused to provide further detail of the search but said “significant progress” was made and that the disappearance is getting closer to being solved. No other searches are currently scheduled.

POLICE CONDUCTING SEARCHES IN CONNECTION WITH BAUM DISAPPEARANCE

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Department says they will be conducting a search in a wooded area to the north of the City of McCleary (Summit Road area) today and tomorrow.

Investigations Supervisor Steve Shumate says the search is connected with the  Lindsey Baum disappearance investigation and involves work crews with the Washington State Department of Corrections.

Shumate says there have been no additional leads in the case and the Sheriff’s Department is merely taking advantage of the DOC work crews availability in order to perform a more thorough search of that area.

The State Patrol and FBI will also be participating in the search.

There are no new leads in the case, but searchers are back in the woods near McCleary looking for 10-year-old Lindsey Baum who disappeared two years ago.

A state inmate work crew just cleared an area of brush near Baum's home, and the Washington State Patrol is now searching it to see if there's anything of value for the investigation there.

Detectives say they don't have new leads. They're just taking advantage of the cleared brush to look for clues.

Thank you grace-land.  Even though the latest search wasn't initiated due to a tip (according to the articles), I really think it's smart to search the areas the DOC crews have cleared.  It's my hope that those responsible for Lindsey's disappearance or anyone that may have information about it are sweating and worrying.  Even if her remains may not be at the spot currently being searched, they know people are still looking for Lindsey.

Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott said the surveillance video is from a convenience store in the area that was recorded about the time that Lindsey vanished while walking home in the small town of McCleary.

The video shows a local man, jewelry store owner Tim Hartman, who police have interviewed before and identified Thursday as a person of interest in the case. He can be seen in the video making a purchase in the store.

Also seen in the video are two unidentified women, one of whom is seen speaking briefly with Hartman in the store.

Scott says it's possible the two women may have information that will help in their investigation of Lindsey's disappearance, and police would like to speak with them.

He is asking the women in the video or anyone who recognizes them to get in touch with the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office.

MCCLEARY, Wash. – Investigators are looking for two women seen on surveillance video talking to a jewelry store owner considered a person of interest in the case of missing McCleary girl Lindsey Baum.

KING 5 News has learned the man told investigators he was not in town when Baum disappeared on June 26, 2009, but the video appears to contradict that.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office said the video was recorded from Mike’s Market at 204 West Simpson Avenue. About 23 seconds in, the man is seen chatting briefly with two other customers before he left.

The time stamp on the video is 9:20 p.m. That's close to when Baum, who was 10 at the time, disappeared while walking home.

Investigators would like to speak to the women.

Police served a search warrant on the man’s business, Hartman Jewelry, on Oct. 18, 2011, as part of the Baum investigation. He is one of several dozen persons of interest in the case.

It's believed Baum vanished about a quarter-mile from the jewelry store, which is a couple blocks away from Mike's Market.

The sheriff’s office said it held off releasing the video until now at the request of the FBI as part of their ongoing investigation.

“He had categorically denied being in McCleary at the time she disappeared,” Scott said. “Obviously, the video shows that’s not the case.” Scott added that the person of interest, who owns a jewelry store northwest of McCleary, does not contest that the video depicts him.

“That’s not in debate,” Scott said.

Investigators have only recently shared the video with the person of interest, Scott said. Scott would not discuss what the person of interest’s response was after he was shown the video.

“I don’t want to get into what he said or didn’t say,” Scott said.

Scott said the existence of the video was withheld from the public, and from the person of interest, at the advice of the FBI, who are assisting the sheriff’s office with the investigation.

Investigators are now releasing the video to media outlets because they want to identify two women who were speaking with the person of interest during a brief interaction inside the convenience store, Scott said. There is no audio on the video, according to Scott.

“What they saw, heard, or observed could be important to us,” Scott said.

In an interview on Thursday, Hartman told KOMO News that he had nothing to do with Lindsey's disappearance.

He admitted he initially told police he was not at the convenience store, but said he honestly doesn't remember being there at the time in question.

He says he showed investigators a "certificate" showing that he had been in a class in Belfair until 9 p.m. on June 26 and couldn't have made it to McCleary by 9:15 p.m. But he says FBI investigators then determined that the class actually had ended at 8:15 p.m.

"I still don't remember being here the night Lindsey disappeared, but they have me at Mike's (Market) at 21:15 on their camera, 'cause I looked at the picture, and I said, 'Yeah, that is me.' But I still don't remember being here at that time."

Hartman tells KOMO News he made an ambulance run later in the evening of June 26, and when he returned to McCleary, the search for Lindsey already was under way.

He says Chief George Crumb of the McCleary Police Department then asked him to join in the search, which he did. But Chief Crumb now says he doesn't remember asking him to take part, Hartman says.

After joining in the search for a while, Hartman says he returned home but couldn't sleep, so he went out searching again. It was then, at about 1 a.m., that he says he ran into Lindsey's mother, and says he drove her to a local creek where Lindsey sometimes went to play, in hopes they would find her there.

He says he searched there, and he left some markers to show where he had searched, but they were gone the next day.

"I don't have a clue what's going on," he told KOMO News. "They got to do what they got to do. ... They're wasting a lot of money investigating me."

Hartman says the search of his home and business has "done damage to my reputation."

Possible new evidence revealed in disappearance of Lindsey Baum

GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY, Wash. —
Investigators revealed Wednesday that items recovered during a search involving a person of interest in the disappearance of Lindsey Baum included a fingernail, ropes and handwritten notes regarding the girl, who has been missing for more than two years.

According to documents obtained by KIRO 7, police took more than 100 items from a man who runs a jewelry store in McCleary, the town where Baum vanished. Among the items seized from the man’s home, car and business were, according to a search warrant:

1."Apparent fingernail from passenger side of car"
2."Ropes and straps"
3."Numerous computers and computer storage devices"
4."Pink sheet with unknown stains"
5."Brown duffle bag with assumed human hair"
6."Handwritten notes  regarding missing child"
 
Scott wouldn’t comment Wednesday on the importance of any specific items taken during the search, but said everything was being analyzed to discover any potential risk to Baum.

“It takes us a long time to get the results back from all that,” Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said.

The man has a sign outside of his business now that reads, “Thanks for the support.” He has told KIRO 7’s Richard Thompson in the past that he had nothing to do with Baum’s disappearance, but he wasn’t available Wednesday to speak about the items police took as potential evidence.

In his only televised interview, Tim Hartman told KOMO he has nothing to hide and has let authorities search his place several times since Baum disappeared.

"I gave them free room to look through here whenever they wanted to," Hartman said.

Police now want to know why Hartman hid the truth about where he was the night Baum disappeared.

He told police he wasn't in town during the hours that Baum disappeared, but newly obtained convenience store surveillance camera footage shows Hartman in McCleary at exactly the time of the disappearance.

"I honestly don't remember coming down here that night," Hartman said. "I mean, if they have a picture of me being there, i am not arguing with them, i must have come down. I just don't remember being here."

Police and FBI officials have so far not been able to link the evidence to Baum's disappearance.

Hi Everyone,  I'm praying this new info leads to finding Lindsey and am thankful the FBI are still working on her case.     ::CowboySmiley::  And kudos to the Sheriff, 2 long years down the road and still right on it!

I think it takes allot nowadays for LE to actually name a POI in a case.  This tells me they must have something on this guy of note - maybe from something they took from his car or house last October.

I'd like to know more about this guy.  What is his personality like?  He was video'ed in Mike's about 15 min before Lindsey was last seen.

I'm praying too that the answers will come soon!

Tim Hartman, owner of Hartman's Jewelry and Repair in McCleary, admits he "unintentionally" gave false information to authorities about his whereabouts on the night Lindsey vanished. But he maintains his innocence, saying he knows nothing about what happened to the girl and actually helped in the search for her.

I don't know how much I'd pay attention to these -- these were all in District court, and given the fact that he owned a small business (jewelry store), it could very well have been related to that. "Respondent" tells me there may have also been a divorce in there. Hard to figure -- wish we could see more. Just glad they are now releasing more information. With the surveillance tape being released, I'm thinking they're getting close to busting this guy. Hope Lindsey's family gets some answers soon - they've been waiting far too long.

MONTESANO, Wash. -- The Grays Harbor County deputy stabbed and shot at the courthouse last month, is back at work.
 
"I'm amazed at how well I'm doing, physically and emotionally," said Deputy Polly Davin.
 
Davin is on light duty with the sheriff's office for likely the next month.
 
She has a scar on her face and arm from the March 9 attack, but expects to make a full recovery.

Deputy Davin is the lead investigator in the Lindsey Baum case, she's the ten-year-old who vanished in 2009.  The deputy says quitting would have meant abandoning that and other unsolved cases.

ONTESANO, Wash. -- The man accused of wounding a deputy and a judge during a violent courthouse outburst has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

A judge issued the order on Wednesday at the Grays Harbor Courthouse where new security measures have been put into place since the incident.

The injured judge, David Edwards, returned to work almost immediately while Grays Harbor County Deputy Polly Davin returned to her job last week.

Davin was shot with her own gun after Kravetz allegedly grabbed it from her.

ELMA, Wash. -- An Elma couple who thought someone tried to abduct their young child took a high-tech approach to getting the word out about the scary incident.

The little girl was found quickly and is doing fine, and police believe the entire ordeal was a misunderstanding. But that hasn't stopped the girl's parents from taking their story to Facebook to warn other parents about a man they believe is a predator.

Three-year-old Taylor briefly disappeared from a local baseball park last Saturday. The girl's dad, Sean Sturgill, said he next saw Taylor with unknown man walking away from the park.

"It was absolutely heartbreaking," Sturgill said.

That's when T'Anna Channell jumped into action and ran after the child, saying she was her sister.

"I saw the man and I asked him what he was doing. And he said, 'These are my daughters.' And I said 'No, that's my little sister,' and I took the little girl back and ran down the alley and gave her back to her dad," Channell said.
She took Taylor to safe place and the unknown man walked away.

Taylor's mom said she was terrified.

"I thought somebody had tried to take her, and that's the worst feeling I've ever had in my whole life," said Melissa Sturgill.

The Sturgill's say they started a Facebook alert about the mysterious man after local police downplayed the situation.

Elma Police Chief Jeff Troumbley doesn't believe a crime was committed and said his investigation showed the man, who also had a 9-year-old girl with him, was actually trying to help Taylor find her way home.

After seeing the Facebook alert about him, the man actually came forward on Tuesday to speak with police.

While this case turned out to be a false alarm, Troumbley said he understands why people in the area are extra cautious. It was just over a week ago that an alleged sex offender was arrested in a sting, and town is just down the road from McCleary, where Lindsey Baum disappeared two years ago

This letter is in regards to Jacob Jones’ article about the attempted child abduction.

First, why had the Elma Police Chief tried to sweep this under the rug? Whether this was a misunderstanding or an abduction attempt, a thorough investigation should follow. His actions are completely deplorable! His statements are absolutely ridiculous in nature. Did he follow any leads? Investigate to the fullest extent? Or just brush this off like it was nothing? He is employed to protect and serve the community.

Nigel Graham devotes his spare time to composing songs to help promote the search for missing people.

Now he has created a smartphone app which brings together all of his music and videos.

One month from Saturday will mark the 3rd anniversary of Lindsey Baum’s disappearance, June 14th it will mark the 38th year since Jeffrey Bratcher was last seen in Ocean City, and this is the 30th year since Tyler Inman went missing in Aberdeen.
 
May 25 is nationally recognized as National Missing Children’s Day. This was the day 6-year-old Etan Patz disappeared from a New York City street corner on his way to school in 1979.

Third anniversary of McCleary girl's disappearance

McCLEARY, Wash. -- When Lindsey Baum vanished three years ago this week, two families were changed forever -- Baum's and the family of detectives who have been looking for her ever since.
 
"This is a case that continues to haunt all of us," said Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott.
 
Baum was just a few days shy of her 11th birthday when she was last seen walking home from a friend's house in McCleary, June 26, 2009.
 
Grays Harbor County investigators call the investigation the most "massive in recent history."
 
Following a series of layoffs in January, the sheriff's office was no longer able to keep a detective on the case full-time but, according to Scott, "This is a long ways from being a cold case."
 
Scott said the case is still discussed daily as tips continue to come into the office. A detective spent Tuesday following up a potential lead.
 
Scott said police want the case solved to give Baum's family, and the entire community, closure.
 
"This became personal a long time ago," said Scott.

McCLEARY – Tuesday marked the three-year anniversary of Lindsey Baum’s disappearance while walking home from a friend’s house in McCleary.

Repeated searches of the town in east Grays Harbor County and surrounding area have found no sign of the girl who was 10 when she last was seen June 26, 2009. Her 14th birthday is July 7.
 
The disappearance has caught national attention and remains under investigation by the Grays Harbor sheriff’s office, Washington State Patrol and FBI.
 
Hairs, ropes, straps and “an apparent fingernail” were seized in October from a Subaru and home belonging to a person of interest in the disappearance.
 
The items were forensically analyzed at a crime laboratory, Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott said in February. They raised “no red flags,” he said.

The LE and detectives have not forgotten, Lindsey.  County undersheriff Rick Scott said recently, "This became personal a long time ago."

“It goes to show they come home,” said Baum.

Her daughter Lindsey was 10 when she was last seen walking home from a friend’s house in McCleary in June of 2009.

Her mother knows the statistics suggest her daughter was killed, but she has never been willing to believe that, despite what people have told her.

“Some of them clearly think I’m ridiculous,” Baum said. “They think I should get over it.”

Lindsey Baum was 10 years old when she disappeared on the evening of June 26th 2009, while walking home from a friends house in her hometown of McCleary.

Scott said her age makes it difficult to guess what she would look like 4 years later "they did this a while back, the family didn't think that it looked like what they envisioned Lindsey to look like. They've done a new one, and it's pretty good - when I looked at it I thought it was how I would have imagined her to appear."

Four years to the day after 10-year-old Lindsey Baum vanished in McCleary, her mother, Melissa Baum, was posting flyers in town with an age-progressed photo showing what Lindsey Baum may look like today.

 "Just to point out to the public she's not a little girl anymore," Melissa Baum said. "She's a young woman, and she's not going to look exactly like she did when she disappeared, she's going to look different."

The age-progressed photo was done by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Melissa Baum helped by contributing photos of herself and Lindsey Baum's father when they were roughly the same age.

Baum said the image offers a new hope and also heartache.

"Just seeing it reminds me of how much time I've missed with her," she said.

Since Lindsey Baum vanished, the Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office has checked out 4,000 tips and interviewed nearly 40 people of interest, but investigators have never found anything that leads to her.

MCCLEARY, Wash. — It has been four years since the disappearance of 10-year-old Lindsey Baum and investigators still have no idea what happened to her.

Lindsey disappeared walking home from a friend’s house in McCleary.

On Wednesday, family, friends and volunteers held a balloon release in her honor.

They would rather be somewhere else, rather have Lindsey home and for the last four years not to have happened, but it did.

“It’s a tough day. I mean four years is a long time and she was 10 when she disappeared; she’s going to be 15 in 11 days,” Lindsey Baum’s mother, Melissa Baum, said.

For Melissa Baum, it has been four years of suffering, crying, praying and wondering about what happened to her daughter.

She says she’s never given up hope.

“I’m just very convinced my daughter is alive. I’m aware of the possibilities, but I have always believed that — that she’s alive and she’s going to come home,” Baum said.

“We don’t have any evidence that will support that she was abducted by a stranger. We don’t have evidence that supports that she was abducted by an acquaintance.  We don’t have evidence that would support a belief that she is the victim of an incident or an accident and we certainly have no evidence that she’s the victim of homicidal violence,” Scott said.

So from a hopeful mother and determined investigators, there were two messages on this day.

“I would like Lindsey to know that I will never give up and I will be waiting for her,” Baum said.

“To the person or persons who are responsible for this; it’s not over.  We haven’t gone away.  We’re not packing up our tent and going home.  We’re going to continue to work this case,” Scott said.

Police are still asking for help.

Today marks 4 years since 10 year old Lindsey Baum went missing from McCleary. Now 14, the investigation continues both on a local level and with national attention. Search warrants have been served on multiple buildings in and around McCleary, and Lindsey’s story has been told on numerous TV shows.

More than half of child abductions take place in the child's neighborhood, according to the FBI. The Lindsey Baum case is an example.

Baum disappeared from her neighborhood in McCleary in 2009 while walking home from a friend’s house. According to the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office, "Lindsey was last seen at approx. 9:15 p.m. on Friday, June 26th, 2009, leaving her friend’s home on West Maple, several blocks from her residence. She did not arrive home. Her mother reported her missing at 10:50 p.m ... An extensive search of the city and surrounding area was done without any results."

Sheriff Rick Scott with the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office said the investigation into Baum’s disappearance is still active, but tips have gone from a flood to a trickle over the course of her four-year absence. The Sheriff’s Office and the FBI continue to comb through the case and the community is still engaged. At an annual festival, the community hung banners reminding residents about her disappearance, and on her birthday, July 7, they held a celebration for her. On the four-year anniversary of her disappearance, the Sheriff’s Office held a press conference and released an age-progression photo.

Scott says more than 30 people have held the title of "person of interest" for varying amounts of time and different reasons, but that no one has become a suspect.

Missing local girl's photo to be added on trucking trailers

PACIFIC, Wash. —
On Wednesday, aged-progressed posters of missing child Lindsey Baum will be added to Gordon Trucking trailers as part of the Washington State Patrol's Homeward Bound Program.

Baum was last seen on June 26, 2009, in McCleary.   She was 10 when she disappeared.

Posters of Baum have been traveling around the country on 10 Gordon Trucking trailers since 2010.

I don't know, madibabe.  I think a lot of it may depend on how long the skull was submerged, the water temperature and other condiditions.  I found an article about a case where remains were found submerged in cars in a lake in Oklahoma, and there was a bit of an opinion on how long it might take to get dna test results.  I've included the link and a snippet for general information, not to be confused with Lindsey's case.  I hope the skull can be id'd.

A fisherman pulled it up Friday morning about 2 miles off the coast. The fisherman set the pot last week.

Skull brought up in crab pot sent to FBI

A skull found in a crab pot off the coast of Westport on Friday has been sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for DNA analysis, Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Dave Pimentel said Monday.

A local crab fisherman found the skull in one of the crab pots he pulled up early Friday morning. The pots had been out about a week, 2.3 miles off the coast, the fisherman told police.

The King County Medical Examiner determined the skull was “unequivocally human,” Pimentel said, and the skull was forwarded on to the FBI for further analysis.

The medical examiner believed the skull belonged to a younger person, but was unable to determine age or gender, Pimentel said. The person is believed to have been deceased for some time. The amount of time it spent in the water is still unclear.

Rumors have flown about the skull since its discovery, some suggesting it might be that of missing McCleary teen Lindsey Baum. Baum went missing in 2009 at age 10.

Phil Westrick, captain of the crab boat "The Ultimate," was fishing near Westport early Friday morning when he came across something peculiar. When he pulled his crab pot out of the water about two miles off the coast, he discovered a human skull inside. Westrick and his crew immediately called authorities, who said they believe it belonged to a young person.

It is unclear whether the skull shows evidence of blunt-force trauma.

Decomposed body found in Pierce County

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. —

Authorities are investigating the scene of where a decomposed body was found Friday morning in east Pierce County.

According to detectives, the body was found off the road in a steep ravine in the Summit-Waller area.

Detectives told KIRO 7 the body was mostly skeletal remains and appeared to have been dumped at the location.

The Pierce County medical examiner used climbing gear to reach the body.

Nearly a year before a child-sized skull was recovered in a crab pot two miles off the coast of Westport, Lewis County deputies sent information to the Gray’s Harbor Sheriff’s Office about a tip they received from an informant indicating that missing McCleary girl Lindsey Baum’s body had been put inside a crab pot and dumped into the ocean.
 
A skull was recovered on Feb. 21 after a local fisherman pulled up his crab pot about 2.3 miles off the coast of Westport, according to Gray’s Harbor Undersheriff Dave Pimentel.

WESTPORT, Wash. (AP) -- Authorities say a human skull found in a crab pot off the Washington coast belongs to a female, but it doesn't match anyone in a national DNA database.

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office says the skull found off Westport was sent to the FBI crime lab in Quantico, Va., and run through the Combined DNA Index System. No matches were found.

KXRO-AM reports the DNA profile did indicate the skull is from a female, and her age is unknown.

Today is the 5th anniversary of the disappearance of Lindsey Baum.

Lindsey’s 15th birthday came and went last year with no new information despite local and national attention.

Lindsey went missing from Downtown McCleary on June 26, 2009 as she walked from a friend’s home.

Lindsey’s mother, Melissa Baum, spoke with KXRO when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children worked with family members and local authorities to create an aged photograph to show what Lindsey may look like today.

Melissa’s hope is that this photo will lead to calls about what happened to Lindsey.

A team of investigators, including the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s office, FBI, State Patrol Missing Persons Unit and the Department of Corrections, continue to work on the case.

Sheriff Rick Scott says that no suspects in the case have been ruled out, but no definitive evidence has been discovered yet.

A $35,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Lindsey remains available.

McCLEARY, Wash. - It's been five years since Lindsey Baum disappeared while walking home from a friend's house in the small Grays Harbor County town of McCleary.

And though the search continues, Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott says no definitive evidence has been uncovered yet to explain what happened to her.

Repeated searches have found no sign of the girl.

Detectives have followed up on hundreds of leads and conducted dozens of interviews in the case, but no arrests have ever been made.

About 2½ years ago, investigators identified a local jewelry store owner as a person of interest in Lindsey's disappearance. Police searched Tim Hartman's home and business in October 2011, and said they seized several pieces of evidence.

Hartman told police he wasn't in town during the hours that Baum disappeared, but convenience store surveillance camera footage showed him in McCleary at exactly the time of the disappearance.

But Hartman denied having anything to do with the disappearance, and says he honestly doesn't remember being in McCleary at the time when the girl vanished.

Meanwhile, her family has continued to push to keep attention focused on the case.

A $35,000 reward is available for information in the case.

Aberdeen man arrested for child rape investigated for link to disappearance of Lindsey Baum

Gregory Brian Johnson, 48, who heads an Aberdeen nonprofit organization that works with children, has been arrested on suspicion of multiple child rapes and molestations.

On Tuesday, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office told KIRO 7 it will investigate whether Johnson could have had anything to do with the 2009 disappearance of Lindsey Baum, who lived in nearby McCleary.

A department spokesman said that’s standard practice whenever someone in Grays Harbor County is suspected of abusing young girls.

After a television media outlet reported the possibility of a link between Gregory B. Johnson and the disappearance of Lindsey Baum, Grays Harbor Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate said the Sheriff’s Office has no reason to believe there is a connection between the two, but it will look into the cases as a matter of protocol.

6 years ago today, some awful person stole my little girl. She was 10 years old and had just finished 5th grade. 11 days from now she will turn 17. We should be getting senior pictures taken, working on college applications and looking forward to her high school graduation. But none of these things are happening because someone felt they had a right to snatch her off the street in the middle of town in broad daylight, yet nobody saw nothing!

I want my daughter back! I will NEVER give up on finding Lindsey and anyone involved in any way with her abduction.

The truth will come out and I will find her! May God have mercy on the souls of those involved because I will not. I will haunt them in their graves even from my own and torment their soles for all eturnity.

If you know anything, please come forward now. It's been so long and I need to know where my child is. Not to mention whoever has taken her, will do it again! What if the next one is your child?

MCCLEARY — On June 26, 2009, 10-year-old Lindsey Baum went for a short walk near her family’s home in the tiny Grays Harbor County town of McCleary, and vanished.

More than six years later, the unsolved disappearance has exacted a terrible toll on Lindsey’s loved ones, and the truth has proven so elusive that police investigators can’t even say whether Lindsey is alive or dead. But her mother, Melissa Baum, and Keith Peterson, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office detective who now leads the investigation, are nowhere near giving up on th search.

“There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t look at some aspect of it... I consider it very active, and consider it something I hope to work on the rest of my career,” Peterson said in early September.

In August, GHCSO began circulating an updated ‘missing’ poster, with a new, age-progressed image that shows what Lindsey might look like at 17. They are hoping it will compel someone to provide new information.

Both Baum and Peterson still believe that at least one person in Pacific County or Grays Harbor County knows the truth, and isn’t talking — yet.

“Those are the people that we’re appealing to,” Peterson said. “We’re appealing to their conscience to come forward. They should know that we’re not ever going to stop trying figure out the truth of what happened.”

Melissa Baum says she knows all too well that very few missing children have been found alive years after they disappeared, but she is holding on to hope.

“I know she’s going to come home. I just feel it in my soul,” Baum told the Chinook *******. “I always have. I believe my daughter is alive.”

Tumwater event calls attention to missing and exploited children

Law enforcement, identification services and the families of missing children were among those who gathered Sunday at Walmart in Tumwater for Missing Children’s Safety Day, now in its fifth year, an organizer said.

The goal: Call attention to the problem of missing and exploited children, and how families can take steps to protect against it.

“It’s tough to prevent, but you can guard against it,” said Grays Harbor Sheriff’s detective Jason Wecker, one of a number of law enforcement officials in attendance.

The gathering was marked by a trailer that included a large photo of the McCleary girl. In April she should have been opening college acceptance letters.

But none of those special moments happened, because Lindsey Baum disappeared when she was 10 years old. "Here we are seven years later, and no Lindsey," Melissa Baum told Dateline. "All these memories never got to happen."

June 26, 2009

In early summer 2009, Melissa Baum and her two kids, Joshua and Lindsey, were living in the small Washington town of McCleary. The family was hoping to make a fresh start after Melissa divorced from the kids' father and moved to the Pacific Northwest from Tennessee.

"McCleary felt like a nice, quiet, safe town," Melissa told Dateline. "The kids were making friends and doing well. Everything seemed to be smoothing over for us finally."

Lindsey, Melissa's youngest child, was an "itty-bitty thing," always buzzing around and talking a mile a minute. She was a momma's girl who hated being out past dark. She'd scribble stories on napkins at restaurants, commenting to her mother how one day, the books in her overflowing shelf would be her own.

The sun was blazing that fateful Friday as Lindsey spent the afternoon at a friend's pool, swimming and gossiping about what middle school would be like in the fall. She had just finished the 5th grade. Her 11th birthday was fast approaching.

Lindsey and brother Joshua stopped at home quickly, then walked with a group of others to another nearby friend's home. Lindsey had asked her friend to sleep over, but the girl's mother said another night. So Lindsey left for the 10-minute walk home alone; her and her brother had got into a fight earlier in the evening so he was already home.

It wasn't long before Melissa knew something was amiss with her daughter. Without word from Lindsey, Melissa called the home of Lindsey's friend. The friend's mother said she hadn't seen Lindsey in more than an hour. Melissa tried to ring her daughter's newly purchased cell phone, only to discover it was accidentally left home on its charger.

"I just knew something was wrong. I got that feeling right then," Melissa said. She called 911; an officer came to take a report. Melissa assured officials that Lindsey wasn't just a kid who wandered off, so they launched a search.

Lindsey was nowhere to be found.

A Massive Investigation

Millions of people across the country would soon learn about Lindsey's case; on national news broadcasts, billboards and radio alerts. Her photo was even featured on the cover of People magazine in 2010.

But before all that, Lindsay's story fell on those at the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Department.

"I was briefed the night Lindsey disappeared," Sheriff Rick Scott told Dateline. At the time, Scott was the undersheriff, second in command at the department.

By Saturday afternoon, officials knew this was not a simple case of a runaway young girl. "We were sure she was gone because of a criminal act. This young girl didn't simply run off on her own. There was no evidence to support that," Sheriff Scott said.

Agents from the FBI's Seattle office arrived Sunday, and soon dozens of them were assisting on the case, along with hundreds of police officers and searchers, according to Scott.

"Every day, we had the command post going. Behavioral analysts were brought in," remembers Sheriff Scott. "As time went on, we sort of took over City Hall because we needed a bigger place to work out of."

Lindsey's mother Melissa recalls driving around for hours in those first few days, hoping she'd spot Lindsey somewhere on the side of the road."Everyone tells you to plan for the marathon, pray for the spring," said Melissa. "I just never thought this could happen to us."

'The years keep passing'

There have been more than 40 people who have "held the interest of authorities" over the years. No one has been completely exonerated, yet none have risen to the level of "suspect."

A year after Lindsey disappeared, police searched the home of a 47-year-old man who, police said, provided "inconsistent statements." A hard look was taken at a local shop owner in 2012. And in 2014, police investigated whether a man who had been charged with sexually abusing a child could have had anything to do with Lindsey's case. Nothing panned out.

There was a sliver of hope when a tipster from California reported a young girl matching Lindsey's description at a rest stop with an older gentleman. The girl did bear an uncanny resemblance, but was not, in fact, Lindsey.

Sheriff Scott says more than 20 search warrants have been executed, and nearly 40 polygraph tests have been given in the case over the years.

"Despite everything we've done, and continue to do, there is no piece of evidence of what happened to her," Sheriff Scott said. "That's frustrating for us -- and unimaginable for her family."

A Mother's Hope

As the anniversary approaches, Melissa takes time to remember her daughter and the shared memories they've missed. She clings to the hope that there are more memories to be made.

"I believe 1,000% that Lindsey is alive," Melissa said. "There is no doubt in my mind she is out there somewhere waiting until we bring her home."

While the search for Lindsey continues, the family is trying to get along as best they can. Joshua, who rarely talks about his little sister, just moved back to Washington after spending the past few years in Tennessee.

Melissa is back at work and has sought counseling. She's also connected with the families of several other missing children, including the father of Kyron Horman. Kyron's 2010 disappearance in Portland, Oregon also attracted the national spotlight. While it's a "club no one wants to be part of," she says, it does offer some comfort. "We provide support for one another that people not in this situation couldn't."

Several tips in Lindsey's case are still called in every month. Each one is followed up on, officials say, but there has been no break.

The lack of movement will not stop Melissa.

"As a mother, I could, and would, never stop searching," Melissa told Dateline, the pain easily heard in her voice. "If I don't, who will?"

Melissa Baum had moved to Washington state from Tennessee to close the door on the trauma of her divorce from Lindsey Baum's father.

McCleary, a small town of 1,500 people west of Olympia, Washington seemed to offer the peace and hope Melissa wanted for herself, and her children Lindsey and Lindsey's older brother Josh.

"Full of life, from the day she was born, we used to tease her that she came out of the womb talking," said Melissa. "She was just active, bright, happy, 10-year-old little girl waiting for her 11th birthday."

But mom Melissa says a shadow fell over Lindsey's apparently bright future when her daughter had a frightening premonition just a day before she would disappear.

"She said 'Mom, I just have this really bad feeling that something bad's going to happen,' and I said 'Like what?'" said Melissa. "And she said 'I don't know, I just have a feeling.' She knew something was coming, but she didn't know what. And the next night she was gone."
Just a few hours earlier, Lindsey and her brother Josh walked a short distance from their house to the home of her girlfriend Micayla. And along the way a family friend told Josh to go back after he had a fight with Lindsey over a bike.

"And he walked in the door not five minutes after that, mad that Lindsey left his bike," said Melissa.

Lindsey would head home shortly afterward, upset that Micayla was not allowed to stay over at her place that night.

"It was a Friday night about 9:30 when she left her friend's home, and she was going to walk to her home," said Grays County Sheriff Rick Scott. "Her walk would have taken her about seven, eight blocks to get to her house. She never showed up."

Lindsey was last seen on the night of June 26, 2009. Rick Scott was the undersheriff at Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office, the day Lindsey disappeared.

"At about 11 o'clock her mom called 911 and reported her missing, so that began a search of the local immediate area by the McCleary Police Department, some volunteer firemen and her mother and some friends," said Scott. "We would maintain that search-and-rescue component for the next 10 days, and that grew to involve over 240 people, ground searchers, air search and rescue, dogs, horseback."

Days later police divers desperately searched local waterways, and the entire population of McCleary, 1,500 people, became involved, all caught up in the mysterious disappearance of Lindsey Baum.

"Our job was to make contact at every residence along that route," said investigator Polly Thomas.

Polly Thomas was one of the original investigators working closely with Rick Scott. They both wondered how in such a small town a little girl could vanish with no one knowing how, or why.

Is it possible that this 10-year-old just fled the scene?

"No. I think within 24 hours of all that taking place, I think it was pretty clear that that was not what happened," said Thomas. "She could not have done it alone, let me put it that way. She had left her cellphone at home, she had no money on her."

"The only thing we've really been able to rule out is that she ran away," said Sheriff Rick Scott.

While the FBI, police and the sheriff's office continue their investigation, little Lindsey Baum remains missing, feared murdered after eight long years gone.

Her traumatized mom Melissa wonders why. She recalls something truly ominous.

"Less than two weeks before she disappeared we'd watched the movie 'Taken,' and when it was over I remember her saying 'Gosh, mom, does stuff like that really happen?' And I said 'Yes, Lindsey, why do you think I get so mad? Why do you think I insist on knowing where you are at all times? Because there are horrible people in this world that do horrible things,'" said Melissa.

"The disappearance of a child in McCleary in particular had a huge impact on that entire community," said Sheriff Scott. "It literally took the innocence of that community and erased it that night."

Over the course of the investigation, how many persons of interest were developed and looked into?

"At the height we had maybe 40 people who would have the title of 'person of interest,'" said Scott.

And as they look closer, police soon hear about something very strange.

"There was two incidents in the week prior to her disappearing," said Melissa Baum. "The girls had been up at the park in the bathroom and they said a man came in on them, but then he left and took off on a bike. The other incident was her and her friend said that they thought somebody was following them. A man in a white car."

Surveillance video from a local gas station shows a white vehicle matching the description close to the time Lindsey disappeared, but cops still can't connect any dots in the stalking story.

And two men continue to pique investigators' interest.

One, they say, was staying in a house near Maple Street, where Lindsey was last seen walking home. Investigators aren't publicly naming him.

"The initial conversation with him is that he had never left the house that night, he didn't know anything, he didn't know Lindsey and that was the end of it," said Sheriff Rick Scott.

But later, through witnesses and other evidence, cops would determine that his story was a total fabrication.

"So he lied to us about what he did that night and he lied to us about where he was at 9:30 on the evening of June 26," said Scott.

And a similar lie also surfaced when detectives focused on a second man on their list: Tim Hartman, a local business owner who made a categorical statement to police during early interviews.

"He denied being in McCleary during the evening hours when she disappeared," said Scott.

If he wasn't in town, Hartman couldn't possibly have been involved in Lindsey's disappearance.

"We would later find, again, video surveillance that showed that was not true," said Sheriff Scott.

Surveillance footage tells no lies. Hartman told police he was out of the area doing some training and was later doing an ambulance call out as a volunteer emergency medical technician. But video shows Hartman in a store in McCleary making a purchase on June 26, 2009, the day Lindsey disappeared. He leaves, heading toward Maple Street. His own shop is on the street where she was last seen.

"He was in McCleary at exactly that time that she would have disappeared," said Scott.
Investigators searched Hartman's property.

"He was somebody who actually contacted Lindsey's mother that night and was helping her, actually had her in his car and was helping her look around areas that she knew Lindsey frequented," said Scott.

Despite the questions surrounding his whereabouts, investigators are not officially naming Hartman a "suspect."

Hartman has told local reporters he has no idea what happened to Lindsey.

"He claims that he had nothing to do with her disappearance, that he merely forgot that he got back that early. He thought it was later than the video would show," said Sheriff Scott. "It remains very concerning to us that he would appear to conveniently have forgotten the most important time of the day that we were certainly focused on."

Though police say Hartman was initially cooperative with the early investigation, they tell Crime Watch Daily he no longer will speak with detectives. We wondered if he would speak with us.

Crime Watch Daily visited the jewelry store that Tim Hartman owns. To be clear he is not a suspect, but his story doesn't line up, it turned out to be false. Was this just an unintentional memory lapse or is Tim Hartman hiding something? Crime Watch Daily set out to find out.

Tim Hartman declined to speak with Crime Watch Daily. However, he has told police he unintentionally gave them false information.

"In his case, there were several things that proved not to be true with what he initially told us," said Sheriff Scott. "That being said there's no evidence to point to anybody's having any involvement in her disappearance."

Today Hartman remains a person of interest in the disappearance of Lindsey Baum.

"Whoever did this needs to understand that we're not going to go away. This case will remain an active investigation, and we're going to continue to work this until we find her and bring her home," said Scott.

"I imagine any parent has felt for a moment when you lose sight of your child in a grocery store, or they get lost in the mall, or they wander off in the neighborhood -- that's been going on for almost eight years," said Lindsey's mother Melissa Baum. This was the first case I started following. I remember how many of us sat here into the early morning going over every possible clue and nothing was ever found to answer the question of what happened to Lindsey.

There was no immediate connection between three Seattle brothers who police believed collected child pornography for decades and local missing person cases.

But at least one law enforcement officer is investigating the possibility. The Gray's Harbor Sheriff told KIRO 7 he's investigating whether the brothers have any connection to the 2009 disappearance of Lindsey Baum in southwest Washington.

"Their writings express desires to kill children," said Capt. Mike Edwards, who leads SPD's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force. "It's very clear that these three individuals have an obsession with young female children, they've had this obsession for most if not all of their lives, and they acted on it."

People following the story on social media have mentioned cold cases and years-old missing child cases.
 
Among those cases is Lindsey Baum, who disappeared from McCleary while walking back from a friend’s house in 2009. The 10-year-old’s disappearance sparked a nationwide investigation.

McCleary is a roughly 30-minute drive from Shelton, where the brothers also owned a property. Charles – and his now deceased brother Donald – remained in the Shelton home until 2016.

Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott confirmed to KIRO 7 News that a flier about Baum was found in the Shelton home, but there is no known connection between the brothers and the disappearance of Baum. Police are investigating.

“When we heard of the link to the Shelton property, and its proximity to McCleary, and the nature of the paper work they found at the [Seattle home] … We immediately began to see if there’s anything that would link to our investigation,” Scott told KIRO 7 News. “The Lindsey Baum case has been and will be a priority until we find closure or find Lindsey safe. We’ve worked on the case every day in some shape or form.”

According to Scott, detectives intend to do an extensive search of the Shelton property, but it will take a large team as it sits on 14 to 17 acres of land.

After detectives searched for days at the North Seattle house where three brothers allegedly spent most of their lives abusing children, the investigation now turns to a 17-acre property in Shelton.

Charles Emery, 82, Thomas Emery, 80, and Edwin Emery, 79, were arrested and charged with possessing child pornography.

Detectives said they discovered a staggering amount of child pornography, along with children's worn clothing, underwear, small shoes, toys and movies. Investigators believe each of the men spent the majority of their lives sexually abusing children.

But it was an unearthed “manifesto” about Satanic rituals, kidnapping, raping and killing girls that led detectives to dig under sheds, searching for evidence of potential murder, detectives said. Charles’ writings were found buried and partially burned -- along with a child's hat.

MONTESANO, Wash. – Some of the evidence police collected at the three Emery brothers’ Seattle home has led some to wonder if any local children who have gone missing could be connected to the elderly men.

Neighbors in the small town of McCleary say old wounds have now been ripped open over the case of 10-year-old Lindsey Baum who disappeared in 2009.

Investigators from multiple agencies told Q13 News no concrete evidence linking the Emery brothers to Lindsey’s disappearance exists so far.

“It’s never going to be a cold case, it’s something that’s always going to be active,” said Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott.

Scott has worked Lindsey’s case since the beginning, but connecting her case to the Emery brothers has so far not panned out.

Over the years police have identified several persons of interest in her case, but nobody has been criminally charged.

And since Lindsey disappeared so close to the Emerys' Shelton property, local law enforcement vow to dig deep to find any possible connection to Lindsey.

“Lindsey certainly fits their victim profile and it’s something that we’re going to try to look further into and see where it takes us,” said Scott.

Lindsey’s mother told Q13 News she was too upset for an on-camera interview but posted a statement to her Facebook page that said in part:

“I am devastated at the thought of these monsters being involved in Lindsey’s abduction. But at this point it’s too soon to know. I pray for answers not only for myself but for other mothers and families going through this nightmare too.”

MCCLEARY, Wash. - A major new development will be announced Thursday in the case of Lindsey Baum, a Grays Harbor County girl who vanished nearly nine years ago from her hometown of McCleary and hasn't been seen since, officials said.

The update will happen at a 1:30 p.m. news conference in McCleary, said Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott. KOMO News is planning to stream the news conference live.

No suspect has ever been arrested in the case, and Lindsey Baum's fate has remained unknown in all the years since she disappeared. There have been no new updates on the case for years - until now.

Lindsey was last seen at 9:15 p.m. on June 26, 2009, when she left a friend's home on Maple Street where she had been visiting, officials said.

Lindsey, who was nearly 11 years old at the time, was going to walk the four blocks to her home on Mommsen Road - roughly a 10-minute walk. But something happened in that short distance - Lindsey never arrived home.

Numerous searches took place in the hours and days after she vanished, and bloodhounds were brought in - but no sign of the missing girl was ever found.

Her case attracted national attention in the aftermath of her disappearance. She was featured on the cover of People magazine, and a large reward was offered for information.

There have been a few leads over the years, but none have ever led to an arrest or any information on Lindsey's fate.

The body of Lindsey Baum, a 10-year-old girl who went missing in McCleary, Wash. nine years ago, has been recovered, according to an announcement from Grays Harbor Sheriff Rick Scott Thursday afternoon.
 
Baum seemingly disappeared while walking home from a friend's house in her McCleary neighborhood -- located about 50 miles east of the Pacific Coast -- June 26, 2009. She was last seen about 9:15 p.m. that night.
   
The case is now a homicide investigation. Hunters in a remote area of Eastern Washington found her remains in September 2017, though they didn't know it at the time.
 
The remains were turned over to local authorities, who released them to the FBI for DNA analysis. Because they weren't connected to a known criminal case, they weren't examined until recent weeks, Scott said.
 
The results came back matching Baum's DNA.

Scott said in 2013 that more than 30 people had been examined as a "person of interest" for varying amounts of time and different reasons, but no one was considered a suspect.

Scott would not comment if there are persons of interest or how close detectives are to making any arrests. He did say detectives now have a crime scene to investigate, but would not say where exactly the remains were found in Eastern Washington.

“At this point, because of the location and working with the local jurisdiction, we really need to keep the area under wraps so we can adequately search it,” Scott said. “…It is a remote area that is primarily visited by hunters during the appropriate season, but it’s not an area that has any population base of any sort.”

“This is a major, major development in this case and we hope it creates the information we need to make an arrest,” he said.

GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY, Wash. -- Remains found in September 2017 in a remote part of eastern Washington have been identified as Lindsey Baum, a 10-year-old girl who vanished in 2009, the Grays Harbor County sheriff's office announced Thursday. Baum, who vanished walking back from a friend's house in McCleary, is one of the region's most highly publicized missing child cases.

Sheriff Rick Scott announced Thursday the case is now a kidnapping and homicide investigation.

Scott said he was notified by the FBI lab a few weeks ago that the remains found by hunters last year were identified as Baum. He wouldn't detail the specific location, but said investigators were now scouring the area in the hopes of finding a clue that would point them to a suspect, who he called a "monster."

He said the grim discovery now marks a turning point in the investigation.

"For the last nine years we've not been able to definitively say what this was, beyond this was a missing child," Scott said. "...Now, the reality is we need to find a homicide suspect."

No suspects have ever been named in the case.

Investigators have over the years released surveillance video, one showing a white truck and a man who went into a convenience store on the night Baum disappeared, reports CBS affiliate KIRO. In October 2011, several search warrants were served at the business, storage unit and home of a man who police said was a person of interest in the case, the station reports. The man's business was on the route Baum would have taken to get home the night she vanished.

Last August, Scott said his office wanted to investigate any possible links between the disappearance and the case of three elderly brothers arrested in Seattle for allegedly possessing images of child sex abuse and other materials detectives say indicate the men spent the majority of their lives sexually abusing children. 

Prosecutors say 82-year-old Charles Emery, 80-year-old Thomas Emery and 78-year-old Edwin Emery had the disturbing images in their North Seattle home along with writings that indicated desires to kill children and an "obsession" with young girls. Police also searched another home in Shelton, about 90 miles away from Seattle, where another now-deceased Emery brother lived until 2016.

Last year, Scott said he was particularly interested in that search because Shelton is about a half hour away from McCleary, where Baum vanished.

"They would have had an opportunity to be in the McCleary area at the time of Lindsey's disappearance," Scott told KIRO at the time. "They certainly would have been the type of people that would have victimized a girl her age."

A flyer about Baum was found in the Shelton home, but there is no known connection between the brothers and the disappearance of Baum.

Scott urged anyone with information to come forward.

"There's someone out there we knows who did this and how this happened," Scott said.

Baum’s disappearance has been linked to more than two dozen possible persons of interest over the years. However, none of the leads ever panned out.

Most recently, authorities in Grays Harbor County investigated a possible link between Baum’s disappearance and three elderly Seattle brothers who were each charged last year with two counts of second-degree possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexual conduct. Charging papers filed against the men said a search of their home turned up volumes of sexually explicit images and videos of young girls, along with girls’ clothing, shoes, toys and handwritten notes about girls being kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed.

The brothers also owned property in Shelton, about 30 miles from McCleary.

Two of the brothers, Edwin and Thomas Emery, pleaded guilty to the charges. Charges against Charles Emery were dismissed after he was ruled incompetent.

However, no link between the Emery brothers and Baum was ever established.

In 2015, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office sent out an updated missing-person flier for Baum. At the time, a reward of up to $35,000 is being offered for information on the whereabouts of Baum and for the arrest and charges against the person or persons responsible for her disappearance.

It breaks my heart to finally have to accept that she was murdered and god knows what else. I just pray that evidence of some kind was found so she can have justice.

The FBI earlier determined the remains were human, but they were only recently matched to Lindsey. Scott would say only that the remains were found in Eastern Washington in an area primarily visited by hunters. Otherwise, the area has no significant population, he said. Scott also declined to name the county and wouldn't discuss the nature of the remains found.

Although Baum's remains were found last fall, they only recently were analyzed by the FBI because the remains were submitted for DNA analysis, and were not attached to a specific criminal investigation, Scott said, so they were not a priority. The hunters turned over the remains to local authorities before they were sent to the FBI.

Scott said the case is now being treated as a kidnapping and homicide investigation.

“Our focus now is to solve a kidnapping and homicide. For the last nine years we’ve not been able to say definitively what this was. … Now the reality is we need to find a homicide suspect,” Scott said.

Scott was tight-lipped about the next steps in the investigation, but did say investigators have a location that can be searched forensically.

Large scale search initiated in Kittitas County

Kittitas County, WA - 05/12/2018 - On Saturday, May 12, the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office initiated a multi-agency area search in connection to skeletal remains found last fall in Kittitas County. DNA testing identified the remains to be those of Lindsey Baum, a 10-year-old girl last seen on June 26, 2009, in McCleary, WA, on her way home from a friend’s house.

An initial area search was done after the remains were found in the Fall of 2017, just prior to the first snow fall. Last week found that the last of the snow in the search area  had melted, thus allowing for an additional search to be done.
 
Saturday’s search consisted of 22 K9 teams, Search and Rescue (SAR) ground personnel and investigators from Kittitas County, King County and the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office.  The K9 teams are from across the state, including Kittitas, Skamania, Lewis, Pierce, King, Snohomish, Mason, Kitsap, Spokane counties and Kootenai County (Idaho).  Tracking teams from King County, Idaho Mountain Search & Rescue and Lake County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue from Polson, Montana, will also be assisting.

Undersheriff Myers described the search area, located about 20 miles West of Ellensburg, as steep, heavily timbered with large cliffs and deep ravines. Asked about those involved in the search, he said, "It's humbling to see the level of support for this case. These search teams and investigators are among the best there are and they understand the relevance to the investigation, the family and the community. To watch them work, you would never guess they come from over 10 different agencies".
 
Grays Harbor S.O. and the FBI continue to lead the investigation into Baum’s disappearance.

Police in Washington state launched an extensive search Saturday in the area where a girl missing since 2009 was found dead last fall.

The remains of Lindsey Baum were discovered last year by hunters in a remote region of central Washington, but they were not identified as the 10-year-old who went missing while walking to a friend's house in 2009 until this week, Seattle ABC affiliate KOMO reported.

The family from McCleary, Washington, searched for about an hour after she remained missing past her 10 p.m. curfew, but found no trace of her. The family called police, who simultaneously began a search effort and criminal investigation.

Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott told ABC News in late June 2009, "We're not ready to give up hope."

There were no signs of Lindsey Baum until the hunters discovered remains in September 2017 in Kittitas County near Ellensburg, which were identified by the FBI on May 9, according to KOMO. The station reports there was a delay in identifying the remains because they were not associated with a crime.

The search launched Saturday, about 20 miles west of Ellensburg, was delayed until spring by heavy snow in the mountainous area of Mount Rainier National Park.

Ellensburg is almost 200 miles east of Baum's hometown of McCleary, Washington, which is located near Olympia.

Search crews are working in heavily forested areas with steep cliffs and ravines hoping to find new evidence in the case, which has no suspects.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Part of Manastash Recreation Area will be closed through the weekend as authorities continue a search in connection with the death of a 10-year-old girl who disappeared nine years ago as she walked toward her home in McCleary.

Kittitas County sheriff’s officials tweeted Thursday that the recreation area would be closed at Barber Springs and Buck Meadows through the weekend for “law enforcement activity.” The area is roughly 15 miles west of Ellensburg and about 9 miles northeast of State Route 410.

Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott said the activity was related to the investigation into Lindsey Baum’s death and that detectives from his agency would be present. He referred further questions to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office.

Kittitas County Undersheriff Clay Myers said deputies planned to conduct a search for additional evidence and might extend it beyond the weekend depending on what they find.

Large forensic search continues in Manastash area today

Volunteer search teams and law enforcement officials from across the state continue a large scale forensic search in the Manastash area today. Investigators are searching for anything that may be related to the skeletal remains found last fall that were later identified as those of Lindsey Baum, a 10-year-old girl last seen on June 26, 2009, in McCleary, WA, on her way home from a friend’s house.

Search efforts over the past two weekends have drawn nearly 200 volunteers and law enforcement officials and 22 K9 teams from across the region. The search is believed to be one of the largest in state history based on the number of personnel involved.

The search area covers approximately two square miles and is located roughly 20 miles west of Ellensburg, and is described as steep and heavily timbered with large cliffs and deep ravines.

Forest Service Road 3100 in the Manastash area remains closed at Barber Springs and Buck Meadows. An update regarding the closure will be provided early next week. The Sheriff’s Office would like to express continued appreciation for the public’s cooperation and patience with the closures.

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office is working in conjunction with the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Grays Harbor S.O. and the FBI continue to lead the investigation into Baum’s disappearance.

ELLENSBURG — A rugged, 2-square-mile area west of Ellensburg is expected to remain closed Monday as a search for evidence into a McCleary girl’s homicide continues.

The U.S. Forest Service reports that the area along Forest Service Road 3100 between Barber Springs Road and Buck Meadows was expected to remain closed Monday and possibly longer.

About 200 volunteers and law-enforcement officials, along with 22 police-dog teams, were in the area this weekend looking for possible evidence related to 10-year-old Lindsey Baum, who was last seen almost nine years ago when she left a friend’s home in McCleary, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office.

Lindsey Baum’s mother will make her first public statement this week after her daughter’s remains were discovered outside of Ellensburg.

Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott announced that he will be conducting a news conference on Thursday, June 14 at 1:00 pm at the McCleary Community Center in McCleary.

Scott tells KXRO that there have been no new developments in this case, but this is a chance for Melissa Baum to make a statement to the media. 

On hand at the conference will be Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana to provide an an update on the searches that have taken place in Kittitas County.

Thank you, grace-land.  Lindsey has touched my heart during her very short time on this earth.  My heart breaks for all who love her.  I am hoping her Mother is able to shed some more light on what may have happened to her daughter.  I am sure there is enough shoulda woulda coulda to go around in this town.  I hope they can pull together and get justice for this little one.  It is wonderful they have not forgotten her.  I have always wondered about the white vehicle and the feelings Lindsey had about being followed. 

I am not pointing fingers at anyone.  I want to ask everyone to please take  our children seriously when they say something is amiss.  They may only be little and usually have not lived enough time to be savy, but we all possess those creepy feelings.  If it turns out to be a false alarm, at least our children are safe.  Again, not pointing fingers at anyone, most of us have ignored a child, whether our own, a neighbor, a relative, or a friend who has said something that turns out to be important.  Rather than ask, what did s/he say (?) at the end of the day when s/he is not where s/he is supposed to be, listen to her and help him sort out his feelings.  Do not give anyone the impression this child does not have anyone that cares to check up on her.  Once again, my heart goes out to anyone who has been affected by the death of this beautiful child.  I hope she did not suffer much, but any amount she suffered is too much.  Justice for any child who has been violated.  Childhood should be a time of carefree spirits and a feeling of freedom.  RIP, sweet Lindsey.  <3

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- Melissa Baum spoke to the media Thursday for the first time since investigators linked the discovery of human remains to her daughter, who vanished nearly a decade ago.

"The fact is a monster stole my 10-year-old little girl and they murdered her," Baum said. "And they dumped her like trash in the woods. So my fight now has turned from looking for my daughter to finding who killed her."

Authorities say Lindsey Baum vanished nearly nine years ago from her hometown of McCleary, a small town west of Olympia. The girl was last seen the night of June 26, 2009, when she left a friend's home. She was going to walk the four blocks to her house but never arrived.

Numerous searches took place in the hours and days after she vanished, and bloodhounds were brought in, but no sign of her was ever found. Her case attracted national attention in the aftermath of her disappearance.

Nearly a decade later, investigators said Baum's remains had been found in Eastern Washington. Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott the remains were found by hunters last September.

The remains were then sent to FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia, for analysis. Months later, authorities learned the DNA matched Lindsey Baum.

"As long as there are monsters like this out on the street, none of our children are safe," Baum said.

No arrests have been made. Scott said detectives are doing everything they can to find out who was responsible for Lindsey's death.

Baum made an emotional plea for the public to send in any tips that could help bring justice for Lindsey.

"I urge anyone who has information or knowledge of any kind to please come forward. We need justice. The people who did this to Lindsey deserve to be punished. And the children still out there -- your children -- deserve to be  safe," Baum said.

"This person is a monster and I grew up teaching my children that monsters didn't exist. So now when you're telling your children monsters don't exist, you're lying. Just keep that in mind. And they don't look like monsters, they look like your next door neighbor. They look like the person who lives down the street or the person who works in your school."

But Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott and Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana said she was recovered about 20 miles west of Ellensburg in a steep, densely wooded area off a U.S. Forest Service road. The area is typically used for hunting and snowmobiling.
 
Authorities from 17 different counties and 27 separate canine teams have combed the area, Scott said.
 
Investigators from the Grays Harbor and Kittitas County sheriff's offices have met as recently as this week to discuss developments in the case, Scott added.
 
"This is a very solvable case," he said.
 
He claimed that people probably know information about the case that they don't know is relevant and again asked people who think they might know something to call the tip line.

It’s not the way anyone hoped to celebrate what would have been Lindsey Baum’s 20th birthday. But volunteers will spend Saturday morning, Baum’s birthday, walking in the parade of the McCleary Bear Festival.

In June 2009, Baum disappeared while walking home from a friend’s house in McCleary.

Last fall hunters found her remains west of Ellensburg. Police have not made an arrest in the case.

“She needs to be able to rest in peace,” said Michelle Ames.

Ames is one of several volunteers walking Saturday's parade.

Volunteers are also hosting a booth for Baum at the McCleary Bear Festival, selling tee-shirts and taking donations for keychains and bracelets to raise money for Baum’s upcoming memorial service

The goal is to raise $3,000 to place a bench next to a tree planted in Baum’s memory.

It will be in the shape of a butterfly, something Lindsey loved.

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- Lindsey Baum was 10-year-old when she was abducted from McCleary in 2009.  On Saturday, her mother and volunteers marked what would have been her 20th birthday to make sure no one will ever forget her name.

The annual McCleary Bear Festival is a bittersweet celebration in memory of Lindsey Baum.

In fall 2017, hunters found human remains in the Manastash Recreation Area.

In May, the FBI confirmed it was Lindsey Baum’s remains that hunters found.

“Lindsey’s been found, but my battle is not over. Whoever murdered her is still on the streets and probably still walks the streets of McCleary,” said Lindsey Baum’s mother Melissa Baum.

More than nine years after she disappeared, the life of Lindsey Baum will be honored at a service this weekend in Olympia.

Lindsey went missing near her home in McCleary on June 26, 2009. Her remains were found by hunters last fall in Kittitas County, although the remains were not identified as Baum until May.

On Saturday, Evergreen Christian Community in Olympia will hold a celebration of life for her from 1-4 p.m. It will begin with a service, followed by a dove and butterfly release and reception. All are welcome to attend.

Tables in the church foyer were lined with photos of Lindsey Baum, from when she was a baby up to age 10. There she was in a cowboy hat, in her soccer team uniform, on the playground, with a toy guitar.

Also on display were some of her stuffed animals, her journals, a Valentine’s Day card she made her mom, a copy of “Breaking Dawn” with the cover missing.

Among the mementos of a young girl’s life was a grim reminder: a copy of the People magazine issue from fall 2009 with Lindsey, who’d gone missing, on the cover.

Lindsey’s mom, Melissa Pierpoint-Baum, said she is comforted knowing Lindsey is in heaven with Pierpoint-Baum’s mother, who died the year before Lindsey was born.

“I only take comfort in knowing that she’s with my mother, who she never had the chance to meet,” she said. “They shared a love of chocolate, so I just keep telling myself they’re having parties every night eating triple-chocolate fudge sundaes.”

The hunter who had found a piece of Lindsey’s skull had been hunting that area for over 30-plus years, and had even passed the skull fragment a few years before, but had failed to further examine it.

Rose Winquist, a Seattle-based private investigator working for the Baum family, thinks it’s a solvable case.

“There’s a connection we just need to find it,” Winquist said.

Winquist believes that people who are familiar with the surrounding area are going to be essential in making new strides in the case.

Since Manastash is a popular recreation area Winquist hopes this spring and summer will lead to possible new evidence that will strengthen Lindsey’s case. Winquist encourages people to keep an eye out for anything that might look suspicious.

Winquist warns it’s important that if anything is found to not touch or disturb it and contact law enforcement right away.

“If we can find the rest of her remains that could be a huge break,” Winquist said. “With those remains there could be a trace of DNA that was left either on Lindsey’s clothing, soles of her shoes, or even a button can have finger prints on it.”

Lindsey had on a bathing suit underneath her clothing the day she was kidnapped and although it has been nine years since her disappearance certain articles of clothing could have survived. Even more so if she was wrapped in a blanket.

Winquist doesn’t believe whoever decided to leave Lindsey’s body in the Manastash area wasn’t by happenstance, but rather her killer knew the area.

Melissa Baum is asking for surrounding communities to help in efforts of locating the rest of her daughter’s remains and is offering a $35,000 reward. She also hopes Kittitas County Search and Rescue might also lend a hand in search efforts this summer.

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- This is a grim anniversary week for the town of McCleary, where 10 years ago Lindsey Baum vanished on the way home from a friend's house.

A new remembrance garden including a butterfly bench and plaque will be dedicated at a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Could DNA help as it has in other cold cases such as Jennifer Bastian and Michella Welch in Tacoma?

We always hope that that's the case, but at this point that's not shaping up to be, but that's something we're continuing to look at," said Grays Harbor County Sheriff Rick Scott. He said since it is an open murder investigation he can't reveal what if any DNA was collected.

The hope continues to be that someone comes forward with new information.

"That's pretty much the only hope we have is hopefully by keeping her name out there that someone will come forward with some kind of information," said family friend Michelle Ames. "Because you never know how small the detail that's needed."

Lindsey's mother Melissa will be there to talk with the crowd.

The sheriff and detectives will be there to answer any questions and talk with people.

"We're always hoping that we're going to get that one piece of information that is going to break it all down," Scott said.

The sheriff did say that the cold case units with the state Attorney General's office, FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are being asked to review their case. And a new database of all of the records and files are being put into digital form to make it easier and quicker to search.

Family fights to keep 10-year-old girl’s unsolved murder banners up

McCleary, Wash. — Bold red letters and the smiling face of a 10-year-old girl catch people's attention every time they pass by.

The banners are constant reminders that Lindsey Baum’s murder case still hasn’t been solved.

“I don’t understand why everybody is not outraged that there is still a child murderer on the loose,” said Melissa Baum, Lindsey’s mother.

Melissa has been searching for the person who abducted her little girl more than 11 years ago, but that’s not her only battle. These days, she’s fighting with the City of McCleary to keep the signs up.

“I don’t know how much louder I have to scream that I’m not going anywhere and neither are my banners,” said Melissa.

Melissa said city workers took down the banner at the police department and at the park near Lindsey’s memorial garden; for now, that one is back up.

In a statement to KIRO 7, Mayor Brenda Orffer said:

“Council members have been asked by some if the banner could be removed from the park as it is where children go to play. When it was placed there without approval, we did not immediately remove it because we do want to see justice for Lindsey. When concerns were shared and the request to remove it was made, we attempted to find out who had placed the banner at the park so we could make a plan together. When we could not determine who or what organization had placed it there, council members asked that it be removed in response to concerns that had been shared with them.”

“They can complain all they want, where’s my justice, where’s the outrage for my murdered 10-year-old,” said Melissa.

“We apologize if anyone is offended by the signs, but we’re offended by the fact that there’s still a killer walking the streets that is responsible for murdering Lindsey Baum,” said Angela, a Justice for Lindsey volunteer.

The city may be taking down banners, but others are hanging them up. Volunteers are printing 20 yard banners and 50 campaign signs to put around town.

“If the city doesn’t want to keep them up, then the people of McCleary are going to ensure they stay up until we find Lindsey’s killer,” said Angela.

Melissa said Lindsey deserves to have the banners up.

“My daughter existed, she was real, she played on that playground, she walked those streets, she had a right to be safe. She was stolen, she was murdered and she was dumped like trash. And I’m not going to let them forget that. I’m not going to let anyone forget that until her monsters are behind bars or dead,” said Melissa.

ENUMCLAW, Wash. - A man arrested this week for a cold case kidnapping and rape in Grays Harbor County, Washington, could be tied to the 2009 disappearance and murder of 10-year-old Lindsey Baum in the same town.

According to the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office, deputies arrested Paul Bieker of Enumclaw Tuesday in connection to a 2003 kidnapping and rape that started on Church Road in McCleary.

Investigators say a 17-year-old girl was kidnapped in March 2003 when she returned home in her vehicle. Bieker reportedly tied her up and loaded her into her own vehicle, then took her to an undisclosed location and sexually assaulted her. He then drove her somewhere near McCleary and left her in her car, police say. She was able to free herself and get home.

DNA was collected at the hospital, but investigators were not able to find a match in the nationwide criminal database. Seven years later, the Grays Harbor Prosecuting Attorney’s Office obtained an arrest warrant for an unknown person, based on the DNA profile developed.

In December of 2020, Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office Chief Darrin Wallace submitted the DNA evidence to a laboratory for genealogy testing, detectives say.

The testing revealed a short list of possible suspects that were believed to be related to the source of the suspect DNA.

Investigators believe Bieker lived in McCleary in 2003 at a home not far from the victim’s residence.

They also were able to identify more circumstantial evidence that linked him to the crime, and investigators were able to match Bieker's DNA from a discarded item to the DNA collected in 2003.

Bieker appeared in court Wednesday. A judge set his bail at $250,000.

Detectives are examining whether Bieker is the same person who kidnapped and killed 10-year-old Lindsey Baum, who went missing in McCleary in 2009.

The only major break in her disappearance came in 2017, when a fragment of her skull was found by hunters in a remote area of Kittitas County.

"There are some eerie similarities between the two cases," Grays County Undersheriff Brad Johansson says. "How many kidnappers do you have in the same small town? However, they could end up being completely unrelated."

On June 26th, 2009, 10 year-old Lindsey Baum was walking home in McCleary and vanished.  In 2018, her remains were discovered near Ellensburg.  Her murder remains unsolved. I’m often asked for updates regarding Lindsey’s case. As far as the investigation itself goes, there is none. No changes, no updates, no progress that I’ve been informed of.

However as many of you know, I’ve started a petition to have Lindsey’s case removed from GHCSO jurisdiction.  I am asking for the Attorney General’s Office to take over her case and use their cold case investigators to restart the investigation from the beginning. It has been in the hands of Rick Scott for almost 13 years with zero progress. They have little to no time or investigators to spend on Lindsey’s case. As the years have passed crime continues to increase in our county and country with no additional resources or training to keep up. So Lindsey’s case continues to be pushed aside.  

Now, there is a 2nd missing child in the county, that had been missing for months before anyone reported it. An epic failure of Grays Harbor County Division of children and youth services. Because of their failure to protect Oakley Carlson, whom they were charged with protecting.

This county is not up for these tasks. Not because of the officers and investigators as individuals but as a department, they are under staffed, under trained, and ill equipped financially and technology to handle cases such as Lindsey’s.

This June 26, will mark 13 years since her abduction and her murderer still walks free amongst your children.  No suspects, and even the “persons of interest” have dwindled through the years.  

I will be making Weekly contact with GHCSO, even though they continue to avoid and ignore me. I will also be maintaining weekly contact with Kittitas County Sheriff Office, who as Co Investigators on Lindsey’s case, have yet to gain access to Lindsey’s case file, even specific requests they’ve made to GHCSO for case info to assist them with leads they receive and follow up on have gone ignored as well.

I will continue contacting FBI and Wa State Attorney General Bob Ferguson office. They will be hearing from me every single week if not more.  I won’t be letting more years pass without making them accountable for finding Lindsey’s murderer and saving future victims.

🦋 Lindsey existed and her life mattered. I’m done sitting back and trusting that the people supposed to be solving it are actually working it. I’m not going to be patient anymore, there isn’t an ounce of patience left in my soul!

For those who feel I’m being too hard on investigators I ask you one question:

If your child was missing for 9 years then only partially found and 4 more years pass with no answers no accountability no convictions; what would you do? Would you sit quietly and patient for the rest of your life praying law enforcement will solve if but if they don’t oh well?!

No you wouldn’t! I had a beautiful vibrant little girl one day, then in a moment she was gone forever with no explanation. Lindsey’s Life matters! I will making sure her death makes a difference. 🦋 MB

thanks texasmom, I always thought since there were so many small towns in the area, it would have been a little easier for leads.
Then once she was found, the LE should have starting looking @ how many around the area goes there, there had to be some social
media leads, iirc, the area was hunting,camping 4 wheelers atv, there are a lot of forums for those actives

MESSAGE from Lindsey's Mom..............A message about recent posts regarding Lindsey Baum
As many of you know, I lost my daughter, Lindsey Jo, to a monster. A monster that stole my 10 year old child off the streets of McCleary on an otherwise beautiful summer evening June 26, 2009.
I think of Lindsey daily and often share my thoughts with all of you. I appreciate all the recent words of support but I need to make some thing abundantly clear… Lindsey’s kidnapper and murderer still walks free! Some people are under the impression that her killer has been caught and arrested and is either sitting in jail or out on bond because law-enforcement has no proof. I wanted to speak out and be very clear before these rumors persist. It is 100% false information that Lindsey’s kidnapper and murderer has been caught!
The only similarity between my Lindsey and the June 2021 arrest of Paul James Bieker are these:
 • Both were kidnapped. This is a fact.
 • Both lived in McCleary. This is a fact.
 • Both were children. Lindsey was 10. The known rape victim was 17. This is a fact.
That is where the similarities end. To my knowledge and from what I was told during last June’s arrest of Paul James Bieker, shortly before the 12th anniversary of Lindsey’s abduction, was that they had nothing tying Bieker to my daughter’s kidnapping and murder.  DNA evidence does tie him to the 2003 rape of a 17-year-old child in McCleary. Bieker is currently awaiting trial on those charges.
So, either Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office does not have enough evidence to obtain a search warrant of the several acre property that borders Grays Harbor County and Mason County where Bieker lived for nearly 3 decades OR Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office chooses to simply not investigate further. Either way, aside from the initial public statement at the time of Bieker’s arrest believing that he “looks good for Lindsey“, no other information has been shared.
Bieker was released on bond shortly after his arrest in 2021 and has since been free to roam about most of Western Washington. No GPS. No monitoring whatsoever. He is free to work and enter your place of business or your home in the course of his workday. Businesses where your young, 17 year old daughter may work.   
If Paul James Bieker was seriously considered a suspect in Lindsey’s kidnapping and murder things should have happened differently.

I will continue to fight for Justice for Lindsey and ask those of you responsible for the recent removal of a number of Lindsey’s fliers to please have respect for my daughter and myself and do not remove them. She is out there somewhere and I will fight until the day she is allowed to rest in peace. She at least deserves that.

There is a murderer of a little girl walking free undetected for 13 years. No arrest and no new information. Has there been any effort on your part to keep this case moving forward? Technology has come a long way. And if, as you say, Grays Harbor County just doesn’t have that technology then why did you not share this information from my daughter’s case with the Attorney General’s Office like you promised years ago. For four years I’ve ridden your ass and finally, FINALLY you are sharing with other agencies. Let’s hope Kittitas County and this fresh set of eyes at the FBI bring some forward motion on Lindsey’s case. But that promise you made to share Lindsey’s case with the Attorney General’s Office is still unfulfilled and her case file sits idle….sort of like those untested Rape Kits that sat for a decade.  Do better. These children and women deserve it.

13 years ago today was a beautiful sunny first Friday of Summer vacation. I woke up to this beautiful face full of  excitement. I had no way of knowing that before the day was over, she would be gone forever!
Her life was stolen by a MONSTER that dumped her alone in the woods! 
I will NOT STOP HUNTING THIS MONSTER EVER!
Someone knows something.  IF that someone has on ounce of humanity they will speak up!
It could have been your beautiful only daughter! As long as this MONSTER goes undetected, your daughter could be next. Never think it can’t happen to you because I guarantee you that it most certainly can!
