Font Size: Default font size Larger font size San Diego County Sheriff's deputies began the search for a missing Poway teenager Thursday night, NBC San Diego has reported.

Chelsea King, 17, planned to go for a run after school at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Her car was located in the area.

Chelsea is a long distance runner for Poway High School. When she didn't return home after dark, her parents contacted authorities.

NBC San Diego reported that more than 100 sheriff's deputies and volunteers had set up a command center at the park and planned to search through the night.

The search of the rugged terrain is taking place on the ground by foot and all-terrain vehicles, and by air using sheriff's helicopters.

Chelsea is reported to be wearing running gear. She is blonde with a thin build.

 Chelsea King, 17, is an avid distance runner for Poway High School who often takes long runs in rural areas.

She reportedly parked her car on West Bernardo Drive and did not return to her car.  Chelsea King was reported missing by her Family Late on Thursday.  The San Diego Sheriffs Department has launched  a 100 person search and rescue operation.

Chelsea King went missing after notifying family that she planned on going for a run after school.

Poway High School student Chelsea King disappeared while jogging around Lake Hodges Thursday evening.

SAN DIEGO — As volunteers and law enforcement officers continued to search for a missing 17-year-old Poway girl who disappeared from a Rancho Bernardo park Thursday, the teen’s distraught parents asked people to pray for her and to help bring her home.

Dozens of people, assisted with dogs, all-terrain vehicles and helicopters, searched overnight near Lake Hodges for Chelsea King, who went missing Thursday when she went for a run.

The Poway High School senior planned on going running at Rancho Bernardo Community Park on West Bernardo Drive near Aguamiel Road on Thursday and was reported missing by her family when she failed to return home.

“We’ve been missing our daughter since six o’clock last night,” said Chelsea’s father, Brent King, who praised the sheriff’s and police departments’ exhaustive search efforts. “We are praying for Chelsea to come home and find us.”

“Anybody out there, if you know anything about her, please just help us bring her home,” her mother, Kelly King, said through tears. “She’s such a good girl.”

Sheriff Bill Gore said his department was treating Chelsea’s disappearance as a missing-persons case, not a crime, and was following every lead and interviewing any witness.

He said search teams, which have come from as far away as Riverside, San Bernardino and Santa Barbara counties, were retracing steps taken during the night in the fog in hopes of uncovering something new.

“We’re doing all the logical steps and searching the logical area to make sure we didn’t miss anything,” Gore said. “Hopefully we will have some positive results as the day goes on.”

Gore said Chelsea’s runs averaged four to six miles, so the search is focusing on those distances between the community park and the lake.

The search area was bustling with police and volunteers Friday morning, including some with specially trained dogs. Helicopters flew overhead continuously and some hovered low, allowing searchers the chance to give the ground a close inspection.

Shortly before noon, two inflatable boats from the Del Mar lifeguards were towed to the search area. A sheriff’s spokeswoman said a search of Lake Hodges was planned.

Volunteers were given stacks of fliers to distribute to businesses and residents in the area to see if anyone had seen the girl.

Chelsea is “a happy girl going for a run and didn’t come back,” said Stephanie Dorian, who is Chelsea’s cousin.

“She’s a typical all-American gal. She’s very easygoing, successful with what she does. She’s a straight-A student and avid runner,” she said.

Dorian said the family is “devastated” but doing the best they can.

Deputies used cell towers to determine that Chelsea’s cell phone was near the park. Her phone was found inside her locked car Thursday night.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Don Parker, the search coordinator, said nothing useful has been found so far. “Nothing at all,” he said.

Parker said the group is searching an area larger than 20 square miles. Rancho Bernardo Community Park lies on the southern shore of Lake Hodges. It is laced with trails that weave through brush-covered hills and link the community park and the lake.

“Any time a child goes missing it is a serious issue.” said Linda Farmer, a Poway school employee who planned to hand out fliers. Farmer said her daughter and Chelsea are the same age.

Chelsea has blond hair, blue eyes, is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 115 pounds.

She is a member of the Poway High School cross country running team and plays French horn in the San Diego Youth Symphony.

Principal Scott Fisher spoke to students Friday morning at the beginning of the school day via the intercom system about their missing classmate. Counselors have been available all day for students, said school district spokeswoman Sharon Raffer.

Chelsea was known to run all over Poway. City Manager Penny Riley said City Hall employees have seen her running on many occasions. “What a beautiful girl she is,” Riley said.

I wonder what the park ranger has to say about this.

I think it is more sad that women can't do something as simple as jog without running the risk of being attacked. Chelsea and all other women deserve the freedom that men enjoy. She did nothing wrong...it is society that is sick.

It is also important to not blame a group of people (illegal immigrants) for the heinous acts that are committed by every race. We have no idea who did this to Amber or Chelsea. The truth is child predators come in every size, shape, and color. I live in San Diego, so I do understand your concern about crime and illegal immigration. It is a problem, but I think we need to be careful not to use them as scapegoats. Our own citizens also do awful things. We need reform. I am tired of being a 23yr old girl and having to watch my back every second I go into public alone. It truly is sad Edward.

It is roughly 8.5 miles from Escondido High in North Escondido to Rancho Bernardo Community Park, It would take 10-15 mins depending on traffic. Lake Hodges divides Escondido and Rancho Bernardo. There is an Escondido side and a Rancho Bernardo side. The level of the lake varies greatly. Throughout my life I have seen it everywhere from full to very empty. If you go to google and put in a direction search from Escondido High School to Rancho Bernardo Community Park you will get a better idea of what I'm describing.

Authorities, Volunteers Continue Search For Missing Poway Teen

SAN DIEGO -- Scores of law enforcement officers and volunteers combed open areas near Lake Hodges with tracking dogs Friday in search of a North County teen who went missing after going out on one of her regular after-school runs.

Chelsea King, 17, of Poway disappeared after parking her BMW sedan outside Rancho Bernardo Community Center on Thursday afternoon, according to Jan Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

When Chelsea was several hours overdue in returning home, her parents reported her missing.

Deputies looked for her through the night, and Friday morning, law enforcement personnel from Riverside County arrived with service dogs to help search. Additional canines from other agencies within San Diego County were also deployed, and personnel aboard boats combed the shore and waters of Lake Hodges.

Also aiding in the search were personnel from the FBI, the San Diego Police Department, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the Del Mar Lifeguard Service.

There was no evidence indicating that Chelsea might be a runaway, Caldwell said.

Early Friday evening, searchers reported finding a shoe possibly belonging to the girl in an open area near the lake, and deputies were bringing in her parents to see if it was hers, according to television news accounts.

On Friday morning, a "reverse 911" call went out to Rancho Bernardo-area residents, urging them to immediately report any possible sightings of the missing teen. Dozens of friends and family, meanwhile, gathered at a command center near where Chelsea disappeared, though they were not directly assisting in the search, authorities said.

Classmates of Chelsea's took the day off from school so they could pass out missing-person fliers.

Shawna Watson, a Rancho Bernardo resident who regularly jogs the trails in the area, said a person could easily run five miles to Escondido and back and that it's likely other people would be in the area.

"At some point in your run, you're going to pass someone, every once in a while," she said.

During a 5 p.m. briefing, Sheriff Bill Gore told reporters that the search teams crisscrossing the undeveloped northern reaches of Rancho Bernardo were committed to finding the missing high-schooler.

"Our search continues," Gore said. "We have about 60 members of our search-and-rescue team who are still scouring the area. We have dive teams that are looking along the shoreline of Lake Hodges. We have investigators who are out in neighborhoods, talking to acquaintances of Chelsea."

Deputies have impounded the girl's home computer and cell phone, the sheriff said.

"We're in the process of downloading information from (them), seeing if there might be anything that might of help to us in our (effort) to return Chelsea to her parents," Gore said. "Obviously, I think we're going to be here through the night ... working the search, and (continuing) to contact friends and acquaintances."

Searchers were holding out hope that the girl simply got lost and will be found unharmed, the sheriff said.

"I'm still optimistic," he said. "It's a big area we're looking through, and hopefully we'll get the right lead or the right clue or the right tip that takes us to Chelsea and we'll get her back home in the near future."

Earlier in the day, Gore described the teen's parents as "worried to death."

"They want their daughter home safe and sound," he said.

Chelsea, who is due to graduate from Poway High School this spring, is white, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 115 pounds, with strawberry blond hair and blue eyes. She is a member of the San Diego Youth Symphony and a straight-A student, and has been eagerly awaiting college acceptance letters, a family spokeswoman told reporters.

So this case has some similarities with Ambers case. Both are high school students, both have red or strawberry blond hair, both went missing when they were out alone either before or after school, not sure if it means anything but both are good students and of course both went missing in the same month, February, hmmm could this be the same person? Are there any other similarities between these 2 girls? 
I pray they find her. I don't like that a shoe was found. Is there anymore on that?

It is February, it is another teenager abducted and the location is close to Escondido. I immediately wondered if there is a connection with Amber missing.

Interesting article. It gives a more detailed glimps of this girl. Apparently she was involved in some kind of peer counseling and also does some tutoring? she also is known to change into running cloths and go for a jog after school in this area.  What I noticed that I think is sort of odd is the two moms kind of look alike.

As about 60 search and rescue team members continue to search the park via air and ground, Gore said other investigators are talking to those living in nearby homes. In addition, dive teams have been searching the Lake Hodges shoreline.
 The Laura Recovery Center Foundation is organizing locals who want to help in the search on Saturday. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, bring a valid ID and dress for the weather, said Fiona Oberrick, a foundation member from Sabre Springs. They should also wear comfortable shoes and bring water. They will be sent to assigned areas in groups of 10 to 15 volunteers for two-hour shifts between 1 and 4 p.m., she said.
Volunteers are to meet — rain or shine — at the RB United office, 11858 Bernardo Plaza Court, Suite 200 in Rancho Bernardo. It is behind Citibank. For details, call 858-485-8502.
 The group has conducted such searches “in tandem” with law enforcement before, Oberrick said. These included the search for Danielle Van Dam, the 7-year-old abducted from her Sabre Springs home in 2002, and Amber Dubois, who disappeared while walking to Escondido High in February 2009.

Poway High junior Yadira Molina, 17, was among the cross country and track team members who came to the park Friday morning looking for ways to help.
Molina, who learned of her friend’s disappearance Thursday night via Facebook, said she knows King through peer counseling, one of her many activities.
Relative Stephanie Dorian is among the out-of-area family members who have come to comfort King’s parents and 13-year-old brother, Tyler. The family moved to Poway three years ago from Chicago, Ill.
Dorian described King as “a tremendously amazing ... intelligent and resourceful girl.”
Mike Cook, director of instrumental music at Poway High, said, “Chelsea has a very bubbly personality, always smiling.” For the past two years, she has been first chair for the French horn section in the school’s wind symphony, he said.
King has also volunteered at clean-ups and tutors local youth.

It was also mentioned she did other volunteer work, did she happen to volunteer to at any of the Amber events such as the walk a-thon? 

What sad news, I pray that she is found safe.
So much like Amber's abduction,  so close, the time of year, daytime etc. This time it looks like they are taking it seriously immediately , that can only help.

I do agree with Sweet Justice's comment down thread about blanket blame on any one group, but a side note that just occurred to me, when I was coming home this afternoon, my exit is 3 down from where Chelsea was and there was a unusually large group of guys, 25-30 hanging out on the sidewalk and underpass. There is usually only a few visible, the rest are up in the canyon so guess word spread that it was safer in the open than in their makeshift camp spots.
We don't know what happened to her or who may be involved but I do resent the fact that there are many, many men that live in these canyons year round and it's creepy to use the paved and unpaved trails because just a few feet from where you are walking or riding there is often men lounging/sleeping. We won't even allow the 13 yr olds to ride or skate in pairs near there.

News of Poway teen Chelsea King’s disappearance on February 25 has spread quickly. 17 year old King, a member of Poway High School’s cross country running team, went for a run on Thursday and did not return.

According to reports, King often runs in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. The park lies on the southern shore of Lake Hodges and includes trails that weave through hills and connect to Lake Hodges.

Search crews were dispatched last night and today the search continues. San Diego County search teams have enlisted special canine units to aide in the search and boats have been brought north to assist in the search on Lake Hodges.

Rancho Bernardo-area residents have been contacted and alerted to report if they have seen the teen. In this time, we ask that all members of the San Diego community remain alert. Anyone with information on King is asked to report to the sheriff’s department (858) 565-5200) or the county Crime Stoppers (619-531-2000). King is white, around 5 feet 5 and 115 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Anytime someone goes missing, residents of San Diego should be on high alert. Times like these remind us to stay alert and take proper safety precautions.

Every day thousands of San Diego residents enjoy running or walking on the hundreds of trails our city has to offer. While running outside is far nicer than hitting the treadmill, there are far more risks. Please be careful and head this advice:

    * Run outside during daylight hours, especially if you’re alone. At night, wear reflective clothing and always run with a partner or in a group.
    * Always run in familiar areas, or areas with other runners and hikers.
    * Refrain from running with headphones. If you must, keep them at a low volume or in one ear so you can be aware of your surroundings.
    * Carry an ID, emergency contact information, and a cell phone with you.
    * Buy and carry pepper spray
    * Take a self defense class
    * Always trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, seek refuge as soon as possible.

I imagine cleaning up the side of the road or area near the school.  There is a HS near us and occasionally I see HS kids picking up trash near the school.  You know how kids can litter.

Missing Teen May Have Been Abducted: FBI

The FBI is now involved in a missing girl case in Poway, looking into the possibility that Chelsea King may have been abducted. Investigators have taken Chelsea’s computer and cell phone into custody, according to Sheriff Bill Gore.

Friends, neighbors and family members joined search and rescue teams from San Diego, Santa Barbara and Riverside counties as well as San Diego police to search a web of running trails just south of Lake Hodges Friday looking for the Poway High School student who has been missing since Thursday afternoon.

“We have dive teams that are looking along the shore lines of Lake Hodges,” Gore said at a 5 p.m. press conference. “Obviously we're concerned otherwise we wouldn't have all these resources out here looking for her. But I'm still optimistic.”

King, 17, went for a run about 2 p.m. Thursday at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. When it got dark and her parents hadn't heard from her, they became worried and called police.

FYI - I live north of San Diego and it's raining pretty good right now.  They are forcasting rain most of the day so I'm sure it will hamper the search today.  They do expect it will clear up by tomorrow.

I've been thinking about mountain lions. The park by my house where people go hiking at, has signs up about this, and several hikers have been attacked since I've lived here.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

King’s parents, Brent and Kelly King, along with Gore, spoke at a press conference late Friday morning.

“We’ve been missing our daughter since 6 last night,” Brent King said. “We’vee been provided with every resource available to locate her and are praying (for) Chelsea..”

 The tearful mother said she wanted to thank all the volunteers who are looking for their daughter.

“Please help us bring her home,” she said. “She’s such a good girl.”

The missing teen is 5 feet, 5 inches tall, 115 pounds with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes.

Thus far, volunteers have devoted their efforts to making and posting fliers throughout Rancho Bernardo and Poway.

Linda Farmer, a Poway Unified budget analyst, said she was one of the volunteers because her daughter is a friend of King.

“I’m very concerned,” Farmer said. “Any time a child is missing is a serious issue.”

Poway High junior Yadira Molina, 17, was among the cross country and track team members who came to the park Friday morning looking for ways to help.

Molina, who learned of her friend’s disappearance Thursday night via Facebook, said she knows King through peer counseling, one of her many activities.

Relative Stephanie Dorian is among the out-of-area family members who have come to comfort King’s parents and 13-year-old brother, Tyler. The family moved to Poway three years ago from Chicago, Ill.

Dorian described King as “a tremendously amazing ... intelligent and resourceful girl.”

Mike Cook, director of instrumental music at Poway High, said, “Chelsea has a very bubbly personality, always smiling.” For the past two years, she has been first chair for the French horn section in the school’s wind symphony, he said.

King has also volunteered at clean-ups and tutors local youth.

It's raining like mad in Escondido this morning and I would guess it is raining in Rancho Bernardo as well. This means crucial evedance is being washed away and searching is going to be muddy very muddy.

I did notice that the picture that klass put up looks like Chelsea was on a train. How long ago was that train ride? Amber use to take the train. Was it the same train route?

Could she have been abducted in the parking lot before she went on the run? Was anyone else running at around the same time? Could a car have pulled in just after she did in the parking lot?

Chelsea King went out for her routine run in the evening and never returned. After her parents lodged a complaint, a search party was assigned for the missing girl. The authorities however suspects an abduction case. They are in process of scanning and searching her phone records and her computer for any sort of clues that might help them in their investigation.

Chelsea King is a seventeen year old cross country runner at Poway High and she went running in the Rancho Bernardo Park. However, the cops have successfully found the missing teen’s car, her cell phone and her school clothes. The officials also employed the cell towers technology in determining her cell phone location which indicated it was somewhere in the West Bernardo Drive Community Park, close to the Aguamiel Road. The cell phone was located from inside the parked vehicle but there wasn’t any sign of Chelsea King. When the search throughout the day went in vain, the officials and the deputies set up a command center right at the spot in the park.

The San Diego County Sheriff informs that the night search operation had already started and the rescuers shall have complete assistance of the sheriff office helicopters for any air-search while the terrain vehicles are also keeping a track in the search operation. Chelsea King is reported to be in her jeans. Any whereabouts about the girl coming from any individual is requested to get in immediate contact with the San Diego Police.

I am so happy to know that LE is going at this full force and not pondering the idea that maybe she just ran away and dragging their feet. I think they lost valuable time in locating Amber because of that.

So if a mountain lion was to take a person, would they drag them off and then try to attack them or would they just pounce right there? I would suspect there would be blood somewhere?
I can't find anything new on the shoe they found, has anyone heard anything?

They have been known to drag a person off, and they can pounce right there as well. I just mentioned that because it does happen, but don't think with Chelsea this is what happened. I had read on another forum that the shoe and pedometer was not Chelsea's but at this point don't know if that is rumor or true. I'm confused about her being in jeans, it would seem rather difficult to run in jeans.

Maybe the jeans were jean shorts and not long pants? They don't sound like the most comfortable things to run in either though....I can't imagine someone running in long jeans, especially when they have gone to the trouble of changing out of school cloths, idk. On one of the news sites I read at last night it said they didn't know what she was wearing but thought it was running cloths. hmmmm don't know.

Sometime Thursday afternoon, Brent and Kelly King realized that their daughter, Chelsea, was more than just late from her run in nearby Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Since her father reported her missing, some 200 rescue workers, law enforcement officials, and volunteers have searched a five-mile area in and around the park for two days, hoping to find more than just her locked car, which was found in a parking area of the park. As the search nears 72 hours, investigators have yet to find anything that would cause them to think the Poway High School cross country runner was abducted.

But Chelsea King doesn’t fit the profile of a runaway. Likeable, energetic, a straight-A student, and no history of trouble, San Diego County officials are treating her disappearance as a missing persons case. The FBI has joined the hunt. Dogs, divers, and helicopters have been employed in the searches that have fanned out within the park and along possible routes the teen may have taken on her run (which reportedly would usually encompass five or more miles). Posters of Chelsea King are plastered all over Poway and nearby towns and classmates took a day off from school Friday to pass out fliers on the streets of Poway and nearby Escondido to help in finding the missing teen.

“We have probably 150 to 250 deputies, officers, agents and volunteers all night long and they will continue to stay here as long as needed,” Jan Caldwell, a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson, told reporters.

Sign On San Diego reported that radio chatter indicated that a running shoe and a pedometer had been found during the searches, but officials made no comment as to whether or not either item was germane to Chelsea King’s case.

The 17-year-old long-distance runner is described as 5′ 5″, blond-haired, blue-eyed, weighing approximately 115 pounds. Anyone with information regarding Chelsea King’s disappearance or having information that would lead to establishing her whereabouts are urged to call the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (619) 531-2000.

I wonder what was her last hair color? Some reports are saying blond, some say strawberry blond, in some pics she has blond hair and in others it is red. This is reminding me of the Sandra Cantu, we plastered posters of a dark brown hair little girl and then we saw pics of Sandra with almost blond hair.

On her missing poster the hair color says strawberry blond, so I don't know you are right some pics she has blond and red hair.

Hi Mizjay- Your statements of the men living in the canyon really scares the **** out of me. Why is this allowed? (camps of immigrants in the canyon)

I am going to assume that most of these people in these makeshift camps are here illegally. This is what bothers me about our open door policy: If there is a crime scene and dna evidence it is likely that the perp is never found if he is "illegally" here in our country and if the perp is found we can't seek the death penalty. I wont get into all my feelings about these illegal aliens feeding off of our resources but if we do not get control of our borders I am afraid we are going to see more and more of this element violating our residents and resources. JMHO of course. :)

Yes they do have their whole life, both are so young and haven't had a chance to really do anything yet...so sad and I pray they both are found safe and sound.

I don't think they are exactly alike but they are similar types. Both have reddish hair, light skin, blue eyes. Could be a preference?

New volunteer effort being organized for missing Poway teen

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- There was still no sign of missing Poway High School student Chelsea King Saturday as volunteers were planning a massive canvas of areas around Rancho Community Park, where the 17-year-old girl was last seen Thursday evening.

About 80 searchers working under the direction of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department were scouring the park's hiking trails south of Lake Hodges, where the search has been concentrated since Chelsea was reported missing after going for a run.

As the search that has been classified as a missing person's case begins to look more like a possible abduction, a volunteer group based in Texas, the Laura Recovery Center, was setting up a Chelsea King Search Center at the request of the girl's parents, Brent and Kelly King.

The family is asking that volunteers at least age 18 and with valid identification meet at 11858 Bernardo Plaza Drive starting at noon.

"We want to commence the search at 1 p.m.," said Fiona Oberrick, a San Diego resident who works with the Laura Recovery Center. "We are doing mapping and working with law enforcement to search areas they have given us permission to search."

The Laura Recovery Center describes itself as a group that works to "prevent abductions and runaways and to recover missing children by fostering a triangle of trust among law enforcement, community and missing child's family."

Oberrick said she expects as many as 500 or more people to take part in today's search effort.

"The mood is very upbeat and we feel confident we will have some good results," Oberrick said.

Sheriff's Lt. Harold Turner said a news conference to update the public about law enforcement's efforts to find the missing long-distance runner will likely take place this afternoon.

The Deputy Sheriff's Association of San Diego County announced Saturday it is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to Chelsea's whereabouts.

The 2,100-member group is headquartered near Poway High School and Chelsea's disappearance has touched its members, said spokeswoman Paola Avila.

Association President Ernie Carrillo said the girl's disappearance "really hits home for us."

"Not only because our deputies are out there right now searching for her, but because she is a member of our community," he said in a prepared statement.

The hiking trails where Chelsea disappeared have been closed to the public since the search effort began.

Chelsea, a straight-A student at Poway High School who played the French horn in the San Diego Youth Symphony, liked to run in the area after school, according to friends and family.

 She routinely ran four to six miles along the web of trails on the southern shores of Lake Hodges.

People were distributing fliers with Chelsea's picture in the region Friday, including in Escondido, where the one-year anniversary of another missing teen, Amber Dubois, was observed on Feb. 13. Amber was last seen as she walked to Escondido High School.

At Poway High School on Friday, Lucas Newby, 16, said he barely knew his classmate but felt compelled to help by distributing fliers all morning. The teen said it was the third in a string of traumatic events for the school in the past year.

In December, 17-year-old Veronica Aguirre, a senior at the school, was killed when she lost control of a vehicle she was driving on Mountain Meadow Road in rural Escondido.

Another student, Clayton Blackburn, who would have been a sophomore this year, died in his sleep last summer.

"It's been rough," Newby said. "We've had a rough year."

Seventeen-year-old Sean Golightly said he had taken several classes with Chelsea and described her as a happy student.

Chelsea parked her car, a black BMW, in the community center parking lot on West Bernardo Drive after school Thursday in preparation for a run, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said. She did not return to her locked car, Caldwell said.

Chelsea is white, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 115 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Poway High School Principal Scott Fisher addressed students Friday morning via the intercom system to inform students Chelsea was missing, said Sharon Raffer, a spokeswoman for the district. She added that counselors were available for students if needed.

Chelsea is scheduled to graduate from Poway High School this spring.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts is urged to call the Sheriff's Department at 858-565-5200.

The situation is not looking good.

we recorded a few incidents last year in Poway in Amber's Dubois thread.

law enforcement might already be looking at the vehicle (BMW) for fingerprints, if somebody did take her he would have not let her keep her cell phone, he could have been hiding close by to her car, maybe even parked the car there at the community park parking lot to make it look like she had made it to the park to go for a run.

everyone should be allowed to jog/run alone, you can't let those perv's get in your way, i don't even let rain get in my way, I carry a cell phone every day I jog/run, I can't jog/run without having a cell phone in my hand and car keys in the other, this girl could not have forgotten to carry her cell phone, she wouldn't have gone for a run without one, has the family ever said she has, no i bet not. This girl is not naive, she had planned to do something that day and somebody or something got in her way, if it was an animal, it would have been a rattlesnake...if she was able to go for a run the perv probably drove his car on trail she was running, law enforcement would have been able to see tire marks...I don't think she made it to the park though. Somebody said she may have used the portable potty, but there are other places she could have gone to go pee, she could have gone to the gas station, or a store nearby, or her school. There is a lot more going on there is to even begin with, just hope they find out more then what they have about amber du bois.

With hundreds of volunteers crowded around, Chelsea King’s rain soaked and emotional father held up a post-it note taken from his daughter’s bathroom.

“They can because they think they can,” the quotation read.

“We think we can bring her home,” Brent King told the crowd, clinging to hope that his missing daughter will be found safe.

So many volunteers turned up to help on Saturday that more than 700 were turned away. Chelsea’s mother was overwhelmed with the support.

In stormy conditions, investigators focused the search Saturday on Lake Hodges after land searches using infrared technology failed to locate Chelsea.

The FBI is now involved in the case, looking into the possibility that Chelsea may have been abducted. Investigators have taken Chelsea’s computer and cell phone into custody, according to Sheriff Bill Gore.

More than 700 people is a lot, and 2:00 p.m. being the last time chelsea was seen, what happened between 2:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m? time to make a list of the "regulars" at the park, they should re open the park tomorrow I hope, maybe people who go there for walks/runs will start talking and maybe they can come up with somebody suspicious was there frequently and will be able to help, it's not easy reporting something like that by yourself. If this was an abduction, he/she probably frequents other parks close by. I would hate if somebody's dog , being a vicious one, got loose and attacked her because I hate running and when there is a big dog around, it can be scary. I just saw a dead pitbull on my run and I thought it was alive at first, it was big and brown, already big dogs chase and bark at me when I run, the pit bull I saw looked like it was asleep or was pretending to be, sometimes you just need to be careful when you walk your dog especially if the dog you have is aggressive around people and other dogs.

I wonder of there are camera's anywhere in the lot?

The fire department works out in the park almost every afternoon. They play basketball, etc. Groups of people walk the trails daily on their lunch hours as well. It apparently was a Casa security guard who has stated definitively that he did see her at the park at some point, so I'd imagine that anyone who may have had cause to have been outside has been questioned, and, like you said, hopefully looking at cameras.

I agree, the park definitely is a happening place at certain times. Between 10-11:15ish and 1:30-3ish were always my favorite times to go if I was actually going to be "in" the park area and running the trails that are in the park because those were always the least crowded times, and away from the times with bigger lunch crowds and before the afternoon sporting activities in the park.

There were definitely some days when I felt like I was being "watched" more than I was comfortable with by some of the workers sitting there in their trucks during lunch time - which was why I started going more at "off" times if I was staying in the closer park vicinity.

There were often park/city maintenance people there, aside from the very frequent FD folks in the park, and at the east edge of the park that is beyond the parking lot by the shuffleboard, Joselyn Center, and nearer the dog park portion and along the more canyon-ish area there were often officials who were trimming brush, working on water lines, cleaning things up in the dog park area, or getting things from sheds to groom the fields and ball park areas. So it was rare to ever be in the closer to the heart of the park areas without running across a few people, even at "off" times.

My own experience, going off of the trails toward the lake and the ones that head into the hills by the neighborhoods where Chelsea was believed to have run, though was that I'd always keep my cell with me because it was much more desolate back there on those trails (obviously part of the appeal, though).

I think the biggest wildcard now, that's really a new thing, is that with the new bridge that opened last summer, Chelsea could easily have gone to run from the park area on the north side trails. A year ago it'd be less likely someone would have gone from the RB Community Park to the Escondido side of the lake, but now that great new bridge finds a lot of people crossing back and forth between the two sides. That opens up far more territory that needs closer scrutiny than there'd have been earlier.

Also, for those interested, I'm hearing the helicopter up again for the first time in several hours. It's also raining steadily now.    (From locals at WS)

I don't think they have camera's in community parks or the Rancho Bernardo park, they have park rangers, and the thing is most parks only have one park ranger who go around the park to keep an eye on things and people, and police rarely check on the parks but do because of sex offenders, truant teens, drug dealers, etc. They should put camera's, but people will probably steal or destroy them because that's just how some people are.

No trace of missing Poway teen found in Rancho Bernardo

The intensive search for a Poway teenager, missing after an after-school run near Lake Hodges, has turned from land to water, with dive teams in that lake and its tributaries, the San Diego County sheriff said Saturday.

No trace has been found of Chelsea King, 17, after she parked her BMW sedan outside the Rancho Bernardo Community Center Thursday afternoon for one of her regular several-mile runs along an extensive trail system around the lake.

Chelsea was several hours overdue in returning home when her parents called the Sheriff’s Department, which serves Poway, to report her missing. Deputies looked for her through the night, then called in reinforcements. Law officers from Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties joined the search, some with tracking dogs, along with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the FBI, and San Diego police.

The community center park where King’s car was found, and the land immediately around Lake Hodges, lie within San Diego city limits. Sheriff’s dive teams have been searching the lake today, joining hundreds of other law officers and volunteers combing steams and rivers feeding into the basin, said Sheriff Bill Gore at an afternoon media briefing.

“It’s been a truly great effort by everybody, all with the same goal of trying to return Chelsea to her family,” Gore said. “It’s obviously the unknown that’s so stressful and so traumatic, in something like this.”

Chelsea’s parents, Brent and Kelly King, met with volunteers at the Chelsea King Search Center office at 11858 Bernardo Plaza, where so many people turned out despite chilling rain showers that some were waived off.

“It’s a reflection of who she is and what kind of person she is,” Brent Kelly said as he and his wife stood in front of a band of volunteers. “She’s that kind of kid that everybody loves and it shows.”

Kelly King added that her heart, “is overflowing with all the support and all this love, and there’s no words for it.”

Brent King said Chelsea posted small notes with favorite inspirational sayings in her bathroom, including one from classical Roman poet Virgil, “They can because they think they can.”

“We think we can bring her back; we’ll find her,” Brent King said. Gore said investigators are working with San Diego police to determine whether there is any connection between Chelsea’s disappearance and an assault on a woman at the Rancho Bernardo park on Dec. 27.

He did not offer more details on that case. Law enforcement helicopters have searched the park and lake area with infrared devices, but found no heat source that led them to Chelsea, Gore said. Investigators have seized Chelsea’s cell phone, found in her car, and her home computer.

Chelsea, due to graduate from Poway High School this spring, is white, 5 feet 5 inches tall and 115 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. She is a member of the San Diego Youth Symphony and a straight-A student, and has served as a peer counselor at the school.

About 25 minutes ago a deputy said  he was escorting divers down to a  creek.

Oh no, I wonder if it was possible to have fallen in the water there. Some of the pics I have seen of the trails at the park looked kind of scary to be jogging on. You could easily sprain an ankle and fall.

It's really raining right now, any more word on the divers? I'm listening too but just turned it on. I didn't know that you could listen in.   

I haven't listened to the radio, but it sure is raining hard right now, off and on bad all day.

Her parents must be so terrified, it's bad enough but to have it raining making the searches extra hard.

Side note, it's POURING again.

As KFMB said, they're focusing all over the park and lake area. They've got resources from all over the state and they are ramping up efforts.

They started off searching a 2-3 square mile area. What they have NOT found (signs of her) have caused them to focus more and more on the lake and streams that feed it.

According to the Sheriff, they have ruled out everything other than the lake if she is still in the area.

Any suspicious people seen other times in the park are being tracked down and looked into.

They have worked and not let the rain hamper things.

They (the Sheriff Bill Gore's office) will not comment on the possibility she was abducted or if any items belonging to her were found. They are still trying to be optimistic she will be found.   (From a local at WS)

I am not willing to say that this has nothing to do with the disappearance of Amber Dubois at this time.

There are similarities and patterns showing up that I should not talk about yet. From what I can tell the water search has not found much if anything so far.

I am not there so I do not know anything for sure.

Well I am nobody who is newish to following these things but to me any time a two teenagers are missing in the same area, same time of year, daytime...it certainly seems like there are similarities enough to consider it but.......?

Lets take a look at poway a year ago untill now looking for related crimes... here are 2 reports in and around feruary of 2009

As the parent of a Poway Unified School District student, I just received a VERY disturbing recorded message on my phone. The Poway Sheriffs wanted to caution PUSD parents and make us aware of an incident that took place yesterday, January 29th.

A 12-year-old girl was walking by herself in Poway (phone got staticky when they mentioned the rough location, other than Poway) in the 5:30-5:45 p.m. time span, when a box-type, white SUV stopped. 3 Hispanic males in aged 20-30 forced the girl into the vehicle. They then drove her around for 20 minutes before releasing her, unharmed.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact C. Johnson, at the Poway Sheriff's Department.

I just wanted to pass along this scary bit of news. Be sure to take precautions so that your kids are not walking alone!

Another one yesterday unfortunately. This school is in the poway district and over by Westview close to santa luz i believe:

an unsuccessful child abduction attempt of an 11 year old girl occurred yesterday at 4:13 PM on Via Fiesta, near Willow Grove Elementary School. The girl reported that she was approached by an alleged armed man driving an older, light blue sports car with a black top, orange rust, tinted windows and a small back window with black around the edge. He was reported to be Hispanic, about 30 years old, heavy build, wearing a short sleeved t-shirt. The girl yelled and ran, and he returned to his vehicle. Neither the man or the vehicle has been spotted by police.

After the incident was reported both the Willow Grove ESS and Preschool followed lockdown and increased security procedures.

According to our research of the California and other state lists there were 25 registered sex offenders living in zip code 92064 (Poway, CA) in May 2009.

Very perplexing about this time of year and abductions in that area, I'm not understanding why this time of year more than other times of the year.

Yeah, right, very strange. It's kind of off season for a lot of trades, construction gets stopped sometimes for rain, would imagine it's slow for yard guys, agriculture ??? just some guesses.

SAN DIEGO  - The search for a Poway teenager who is missing  near Lake Hodges continued in Saturday's rain, as authorities investigated whether her disappearance was related to a female jogger's assault near the the park last December.

Chelsea King, 17, was reported missing Thursday when she didn't return home from school.

Her BMW sedan was found outside the Rancho Bernardo Community Center, where she often ran along the trails around Lake Hodges.

Deputies looked for her through the night, then were joined by officers and tracking dogs from Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties, along with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the FBI, and San Diego police.

Sheriff's dive teams searched the lake Saturday, as hundreds of other law officers and volunteers combed the streams and rivers feeding into the basin, said Sheriff Bill Gore.

"It's been a truly great effort by everybody, all with the same goal oftrying to return Chelsea to her family,'' Gore said.  "It's obviously the unknown that's so stressful and so traumatic in something like this.''

Gore said later in the day that searches by about 150 personnel, including detectives chasing every possible lead, will continue through the night and Sunday.

"We wouldn't be here if there wasn't a chance of finding her,'' Gores aid.  "The more we search, the more we can eliminate.''

Chelsea's parents, Brent and Kelly King, met with volunteers at the Chelsea King Search Center office at 11858 Bernardo Plaza, where so many people turned out despite chilling rain showers that some were told to go home.

"It's a reflection of who she is and what kind of person she is, ''Brent Kelly said as he and his wife stood in front of a band of volunteers.  "She's that kind of kid that everybody loves and it shows.''

Kelly King added that her heart,  "is overflowing with all the support and all this love, and there's no words for it.''

Brent King said Chelsea posted small notes with favorite inspirational sayings in her bathroom, including one from classical Roman poet Virgil,  "They can because they think they can.''

"We think we can bring her back; we'll find her,'' Brent King said.

Gore said investigators were working with San Diego police to determine whether her disappearance might be connected to a Dec, 27 assault on a woman at the Rancho Bernardo park. He did not offer more details on that case.

Law enforcement helicopters searched the park and lake with infrared devices, but found no trace of Chelsea, Gore said.

Investigators have seized Chelsea's cell phone, which was found in her car, and her home computer.

Chelsea is white, 5 feet 5 inches and 115 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes.

She is due to graduate from Poway High School this spring, and is a member of the San Diego Youth Symphony and a straight-A student, and has served as a peer counselor at the school.

SAN DIEGO - A female jogger was attacked Sunday by a would-be robber in San Diego's Rancho Bernardo neighborhood.

The woman was jogging by herself in the Westwood subdivision near Poblado Road when the attack took place around 10:30 Sunday morning.  It happened on a hiking trail north of 10400 Pablado Rd.

"I heard this helicopter and it kept circling overhead and it was getting lower and it was a Police helicopter.  After about 10 minutes, he finally came on the loud speaker and basically said we're looking for someone, a lady has been attacked in the canyon," says Steve Smith, a resident who lives near the trail.

The unidentified victim, who is in her mid-20s says the attacker said hello as she was passing and then grabbed her, tackled her to the ground and demanded money.

The victim got away after she elbowed the attacker in the face.  Police think he may have a broken nose.

The suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20s, 5'11", 230 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.  He was wearing a blue and white sweater and jeans.

The woman escaped with minor injuries but neighbors remain concerned.  "It upsets me because it happened in my neighborhood.  I won't say that I would normally be out there at 10:30 in the morning, but I wish I would have been out there about that time," says Phil Sowers, a resident who uses the trail a few times a week.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact San Diego Police.

MizJay....I haven't heard anymore.....they have so much going on it is hard to follow. I did hear them talking about getting DNA off a steering wheel and console, but later found that it was another victim of some kind of  crime. The car belonged to the victim and wanted it done before she picked up the car.

This Poway is also within range of our walmart child molest suspect, that police have photos of but aparently have not been able to identify.

BUT ..He has a red truck which they also have video of and I wonder if it was seen on video or by witness in that park..

I don't know if the 2 cases are connected but I think they are close enough to consider it. It could be just a coincidence or it may not be. I think it is strange that the 2 girls had similar hair, skin and eye color, both were within in the same age group and they lived within 10 miles of one another. It seems both girls were doing something within their daily routines, either walking to school as Amber was doing or going for her daily jog as Chelsea was doing. Could both of these girls have been taken by some crazy person with a preference for auburn haired teen aged girls in the month of Feb? I think stranger things have happened.

I just pray if they are connected then we find both girls alive and well, if not connected? then the same outcome, be found safe and well.

When I try to post, the words in the box jump around. It has done that off and on in this forum when I have tried to post.

The night before last in the news, they briefly showed a woman who said she had been attacked in the same park and I thought she said in December. She said she felt something hit the back of her head (not sure if she said she fell down or not) and the person who did it ran off because she was with her husband (I guess there must have been a gap in their pace, he being either ahead or lagging on the path, and when her husband approached the man ran off. That is all I remember hearing and she did not go into detail. The woman was not a teenager but an adult woman.

RANCHO BERNARDO -  The search for a Poway teenager who is missing  near Lake Hodges continued in Saturday's rain, as authorities investigated whether her disappearance was related to a female jogger's assault near the the park last December.

There is still no sign of missing 17-year-old Chelsea King.  More than one-thousand volunteers braved the rain and mud to help out Saturday.

Eighteen-year-old Poway High Senior Brandon Fantasia is focused.  He walked in the pouring rain through dangerous hills filled with deceptive trees that sometimes appeared to be something that they weren't, all to find fellow Poway High Senior Chelsea King.

Fantasia said, "I know Chelsea.  She was a good friend of mine.  And we all our missing her in Poway."

Brandon along with seven other volunteers searched everything in their sight.  "Just anything to show us a sign.  Anything to show us she might be there or she could've been there just anything at all,"  he said.

Now there is a Chelsea King Search Center where the heart of the volunteer effort is organized.

More than a thousand showed up Saturday to help find the Poway High straight "A" student and symphony musician. 

Fiona Obericck knows all about search efforts. She led up the search for 7-year old Danielle Van Dam in 2002. The Sabre Springs girl who was abducted from her home.

Obericck understands how much law enforcement needs the help.  "They just don't have the feet and the eyes on the ground.  This is a nice way to reinforce areas that law enforcement just can't do," she said.

Hello Everyone,
I haven't been on for awhile, but I remember a lot of you from the Amber Dubois case. I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but if you look at the SD sheriffs site and go to press release, the talk about a failed child abduction incident in Rancho Santa Fe I think. I believe it was only a couple days before Chelsea went missing and the sketch of the guy looks similar to the sketcher from the R.B. incident from last year. The newer sketch has a mustache but he could have grown one. I will be back in RB to help search tomorrow. If there is anything I can do to help with info since I am local, just let me know. I realized when I started this thread that I have the name of the area spelled wrong.  It should be Rancho Bernardo.  Not sure if it matters but wanted to point it out.

Search-and-rescue personnel trudged through a section of Lake Hodges yesterday looking for signs of missing Poway teenager Chelsea King. Sheriff Bill Gore said the search is focusing on the lake and feeder creeks after the ground search turned up empty.

A massive search for Poway teenager Chelsea King continued last night in what San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore called an unprecedented law enforcement response to a missing-person case, as more than a thousand volunteers offered a staggering show of support.

Search-and-rescue volunteers and divers from throughout Southern California will be out again this morning scouring Lake Hodges for evidence that might lead to the 17-year-old, who went missing Thursday afternoon from Rancho Bernardo Community Park. More than 50 investigators are expected to be involved.

Meanwhile, Brent and Kelly King, Chelsea’s parents, said they were overwhelmed both by the circumstances and the outpouring of community concern.

At a midday news conference yesterday, Brent King urged everyone to stay strong.

“I just want to thank every single person who is showing up here to help us find our daughter,” he said. “It’s a reflection of what kind of person she is and what kind of a community we live in. She’s the kind of kid that everybody loves, and it shows.”

After an intensive hunt through the hills and trails around the park, which borders the southern shores of Lake Hodges, search teams yesterday concentrated on the lake and the creeks that feed into it.

Gore said the focus changed after an unsuccessful sweep of the ground, combined with helicopter searches using infrared equipment.

“We have not with our searches found Chelsea in the open areas,” Gore said.

As of late last night, more than 100 searchers were still in the area.

Chelsea, a Poway High School senior and an avid runner, drove to the park after school Thursday to go for a run. Her parents reported her missing when she didn’t come home by 6 p.m. The teen’s locked car was found in the park’s parking lot Thursday evening.

Gore said he met with Chelsea’s parents yesterday morning to brief them on the investigation.

“This is obviously very tough for them,” Gore said. “It’s the unknown that’s so stressful and traumatic in something like this.”

In a business park on Bernardo Plaza Court, about two miles from the park, hundreds of volunteers packed the Chelsea King Search Center yesterday. Hundreds more were turned away as lines wrapped around the center and traffic clogged nearby streets.

The volunteers just wanted to help in some way.

In addition to thanking community members, the Kings expressed appreciation to law enforcement for all its efforts.

“We’re going to find her,” Brent King said.

“Our daughter is the kind of kid that has such a forward view of life. In her bathroom, she has all sorts of sayings that she has put up to remind her who she is and what she wants to be.

“I pulled one off her bathroom wall this morning. It’s from Virgil. It says, ‘They can because they think they can.’ We think we can bring her back. We need to go find her. Please continue to do what you’re doing.”

Gore said many items have been found since the search began, but he declined to be specific or say whether anything spotted in the brush or water might be useful.

The Texas-based Laura Recovery Center, which assists searches for children nationwide, helped organize the volunteer effort. Yesterday, hundreds of people fanned out to nearby communities to knock on doors, distribute fliers and search open areas beyond where law enforcement is concentrating.

Among the volunteers was Maurice Dubois, whose daughter, Amber, disappeared more than a year ago while walking to school in Escondido. She was 14 at the time.

All over the Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Peñasquitos area, Chelsea’s photo has been posted in business windows, and her disappearance is the main topic of conversation.

Gore said the investigation into Chelsea’s disappearance is not limited to search-and-rescue efforts. Many avenues are being explored and many scenarios are still viewed as possible, he said.

One such avenue is a possible connection between Chelsea’s case and an attack on a female jogger in the same area Dec. 27. That victim was tackled by a man on a jogging path but escaped after hitting her attacker in the face with her elbow.

Gore said authorities are exploring any possible connection with the Amber Dubois case and are checking numerous reports of suspicious people seen in the park in recent weeks.

He said interviews with Chelsea’s friends, family and teachers reveal nothing in her background that is suspicious.

“We’d all like to have her as our daughter,” Gore said.

At the search center yesterday, many people hugged and cried. Several said they were drawn there because they didn’t know what else to do.

“This is every parent’s nightmare,” said Gina Storr, whose son is a senior at Poway High and a friend of Chelsea’s.

“Even though I don’t know her parents, I can feel what they’re going through. This could be any of us. You just want to do whatever you can and show support, and hopefully we can bring her home safely.”

I do hope that behind the scenes ... That the POLICE are and have been treating this as an ABDUCTION or MURDER and have covered there bases like Gas Station video surveillance before it is gone and Cameras located in intersections and at convenience stores and looking at suspicious vehicles like WHITE VANS and RED CREW CAB PICK UPS, like the one located at the WALMART incident that they HAVE NOT CAUGHT even though they have perfect photos and vehicle on VIDEO.

WAKE UP LE IN SAN DIEGO to LOS ANGELES AREA !!!  This area of our nation has way to many unsolved attempted abductions that have led to real ones in my humble opinion..

I am so frustrated with just everything.. from how average people act to how LE acts anymore.

I totally agree with you, I live in Orange County, know exactly what you are saying. After looking at tons of pics of this area, I'm assuming the mountain lion attacking absolutely didn't happen, but if she were running near some of the water, is it at all possible she could have tripped and fell in? Just a thought, I can feel that is not what happened, but one never knows, bizarre accidents do happen. One of our friends had one, fell off a bike and hit his head on the only rock that was around and died.

BREAKING: SPORTS BRA FOUND; MAY BELONG TO CHELSEA KING

Police have just retrieved articles of clothing, including a sprots bra, believed linked to missing 17 year old jogger Chelsea King. Police have focused the search on a particular area inside Rancho Bernardo Community Park just ouside of San Diego. Chelsea dissapeared last Thursday, after heading for the park to go on a run. Her car was found inside the park.


Because of the heavy rains police believe the sports bra may have been swept away from its actual location, so the search area is being expanded well beyond the area the sports bra was located in.
Stay tuned. I have unprecedented access to the search and will be blogging from the scene.

I was thinking about this as well. I would hope they have walked all of the trails that one could take? She could have had an accident and gotten hurt.

ArmChair posted something interesting in the Amber thread, did you read it? She included that both cases happened around senior living centers and suggested maybe a worker could have something to do with it? Long shot but it is interesting. Amber walked by a set of Apartments everyday to and from school and this girl was said to use the trails at this park quite often.

Tim Miller with his non profit all volunteer Texas Equusearch and his search members are the best search team I know of.
They did a great deal of searching in the Natalee Holloway case and many others.
There success rate is high.

Tim Miller first started doing this when LE failed to find his own missing daughter and So He went out and found her himself.
Years later he still grieves.. It is written on his face but his Blood is on fire. He wants to find this child. His team was brought to find the family missing at the border..
That situation looks like drug lords that abducted them.. The wife looks suspicious at the moment, only because of her 6 identities. So she could be considered Wanted possibly.

Police found the teenager's black BMW sedan parked inside the park's parking lot with her cell phone inside, according to the station.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, along with the FBI and law enforcement from Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties, launched on all-out search for Chelsea using helicopters, infrared devices and search dogs to scour the park's rugged terain.

On Sunday, dive teams reportedly searched Lake Hodges for any sign of Chelsea, described as 5'5" tall with blonde hair and blue eyes and weighing 115 pounds.

"This is the most horrific nightmare you could ever imagine," family spokeswoman Stephanie Dorian said in an interview Sunday with FoxNews.com.

Dorian said that Chelsea, a peer counselor and french horn player with the San Diego Youth Symphony, "usually didn't run alone."

"She's incredibly intelligent, well-liked and beautiful," Dorian said. "She's adored by everyone."

Dorian said over 2,500 volunteers are assisting law enforcement in the search and that 15,000 missing person fliers have been distributed.

San Diego authorities are reportedly working to determine whether there is any connection between the girl's disappearance and an assault on a woman at the park on Dec. 27.

I wish they would talk "louder" and slower for me.....hard to keep up but interesting for the most part.

I thought you probably lived near to that area,  yes, I'm so glad that this has taken front and center. Too many of these things seem to get a small blurb on the news or paper and then  not too much follow up, it leads ya to think it must have gotten solved but later we find out that, no, they didn't find the bad guy(s)

Thursday, when I saw the chopper flying by my deck so low, i knew something was up.

The coach was on TV yesterday saying they are told over and over to never go jogging alone. *sigh

In the mothers voice you can hear the heartbreak inside her. And when she said "she's such a good girl", I got all choked up.

Shell have you gone to search?

Sorry Shell...I had to step away for a little while. You found the right feed link to the scanner. I am use to my little county and it is quiet for long periods of time and this one is extremely busy. But I have learned to tell the difference in the search group and regular traffic. The search groups are not very loud compared to regular traffic.

We get so complacent, everyday seems so like the next. Chelsea probably felt so comfortable in the park, been there a zillion times and never felt threatened but that's exactly what criminals count on. It's sickening.  The parents,...my heart just cracks every time I see them.

I had a hard time looking at Chelsea's parents in the videos and photos too. It is truly heartbreaking. I also thought I read in the beginning of the thread that they had moved to California from Illinois in the last year. I imagine that decision to relocate will haunt them forever. ( I dont mean to sound negative but the reality is that this is unlikely to have a happy outcome) ::MonkeyTears::

So what code are we looking to hear? They are talking in code. Is there a specific code we will hear if they find her? You know you need to have the code list handy, my goodness. They do talk fast too! How can they understand each other.

Did you hear them talking about the 3 ladies they had to ask to leave. They were entering the park, maybe to take a stroll in the park (lookie loos I am sure).

I wonder if it is someone who goes to the park, cased it out to see who has a pattern of jogging alone on a schedule. It could be someone who does not look out of place in the area. I wonder how often Chelsea jogged alone. It seems like they said she had a pattern of jogging after school, but I wonder if she usually went with a friend or alone.

I have read 2 different things about if she was usually alone or with others. Considering the coach had to give a warning I would assume it was something the girls did. supposedly she often jogged after school and would use this park often.

I did hear that, I think some people were searching in the park that was not apart of the official search.

I'd say the tone has changed here today. It seems still as resolvedly determined, but now I think it's decidedly less optimistic than it had been. People are trying to remain hopeful but concern is definitely increasing.

It seemed most people, authorities included, were truly hoping she'd be found simply injured from twisting an ankle or something running and just not able to get back out from the trails and would be found, and now that it's been almost 72 hours with (from the Sheriff himself) one of the largest searches of this kind he's seen, that people are fearing that she truly was abducted or encountered someone who did something to/with her.

They had 70+ groups that went out today, with about 15-20 people each, and still plan to go out every morning beginning at 9, though I think they are still stagger starting some teams. As I said, they are apparently restricting access of where most searchers are going, though, and keeping most people in neighborhoods and off of the trails now. Over 35,000 fliers were there to be passed out and posted today by volunteers.

Two helicopters have been up most of the day. The larger one is being used to "ferry" people out to areas further back in the trails, more west of the park, and then having them search from there back in towards the park.

There was a very large concentration of LEO (Sheriffs, SDPD, police from other areas, military, dive team, SAR teams, and apparently still FBI, but those I didn't personally see) out, not only by the park, but also in one particular area further back.

In the area near the waterfall down below Legends neighborhood (visible from the end of Smokesignal) there were several dozen search teams that seemed to be focusing on the trails there, the rocks and waterfall area carefully, and then the finger of the lake that is right there.

It's actually the area near where the other attack/robbery reportedly occurred - basically at Poblado between Moon Song and Smokesignal. There were probably 70+ more searchers in gear (not just the LRC group vests, this was something else), half a dozen or so cop cars, SAR labeled vehicles, and some others that I saw as I went past. They were all waiting to enter the rails there. It was clearly the direction they had a large number of people staging to go in and comb even more, and the trails there are blocked (and, from the looks of it) are likely guarded overnight right now to keep people out.

There is definitely a heavy LEO presence, and Chelsea's disappearance is really the only topic of conversation. You overhear it everywhere - in the store, at restaurants, at church, out shopping, etc. Everyone's sharing stories of what they've done to help - donated food, searched, posted fliers, tied ribbons, gone to prayer vigils, etc. And everyone is definitely holding their children closer.

I can see the hills RB off to the right of where I live. I overlook the valley. Hate getting too specific here, but I live in the 07 fire zone path. We just rebuilt and moved back this summer.

So it definitely seems they have reason to think now that she was only in the southern area - since the northern parts of the lake are open and the trails there are, whereas everything south of the lake isn't allowing public access.  ( again an update from the local at WS)

If you look at Google maps it is not that far from the parking lot. I am surprised it is near homes, I was honestly thinking they were looking on the other side of parking lot, north of it not south.

BREAKING: ARREST IN THE CHELSEA KING CASE

A 30 year old man who lives in a home with his mother on the ege of the park that Chelsea King dissapeared from has been arrested in connection to her disssapearance…stay tuned

I just saw that also.  Steph Watts is saying an arrest of a 30 yr old happened. Supposedly there will be a news conference.

I wonder how that can be verified. I am not watching TV right now.

If it is true, wow.

I am looking everywhere and can't find anything. Let me look if I can find the "who is in custody" for that area.

An multi-agency effort to find a 17-year-old girl who failed to return from a run near Lake Hodges on Thursday resumed Sunday.

More than 1,000 volunteers turned out to search for Chelsea King on Saturday, and sheriff's deputies said they were investigating if her disappearance might be related to an assault in December.


Chelsea's BMW was found in Rancho Bernardo Community Park, where she often went to run. San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said his investigators were working with San Diego police to determine if her disappearance was connected to a Dec. 27 assault on a woman at the Rancho Bernardo park. He declined to give details of that case.

Brent and Kelly King, Chelsea's parents, met with volunteers at the start of Saturday's search, where a big crowd turned out to help look for the Poway High School senior despite the rain. "It's a reflection of who she is and what kind of person she is," Brent Kelly said. "She's that kind of kid that everybody loves and it shows."

Saturday's search included law enforcement officers in a helicopter equipped with infrared sensors, divers and tracking dogs.

Investigators are looking at Chelsea's cell phone, which was found in her car, and her home computer for clues.

Chelsea, a member of the San Diego Symphony and a straight-A student, failed to come home from an after-school run, and her parents reported her missing about 6 p.m.

She is white, about 5 feet 5 inches and 115 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes.

I looked up a john Gardner and there are 2 registered, one is a transiant out of Alameda CA, (nor cal) and the other is out of Riverside County, Lake Elsenor. Not sure if it is the same person as it didn't say what state he was registered in

Police arrest 31-year-old John Gardner outside of a retail store Sunday at around 4 p.m.

Gardner is a registered sex offender from Lake Elsinore. In a press conference Sunday night, police would not divulge any details of what evidence they found that linked Gardner to the missing teen. They did say that homicide detectives were currently interviewing Gardner.

Seventeen-year-old high school student Chelsea King from Poway went for an after-school run around Lake Hodges Thursday and hasn't been seen since.

Her BMW was found in neighboring Rancho Bernardo Community Park

All weekend long, about 120 law enforcement officers and over 1,000 volunteers have been combing open areas using tracking dogs. Divers are also searching the lake.

The teen's mother is begging for her daughter's safe return.

"Anybody out there, if you know anything please just help us bring her home," said the teen's mother, Kelly King. "She's such a good girl, and she needs to come home."

King attends Poway High School and is a straight-A student. She's also a member of the San Diego Symphony.

Investigators are looking at several leads, including the assault of another woman in the same area in December.

They're also looking at King's cell phone that they found in her car, as well as her home computer for clues.

He said physical evidence found on the southern shore of the lake linked him to Chelsea's disappearance. He did not say what the evidence was.

Homicide investigators were questioning Gardner on Sunday evening, Gore said. It is not yet clear what charges he might face.

Gore said Gardner's Lake Elsinore residence had been searched Sunday. He also said the search for the missing girl would continue through the night near Lake Hodges, and possibly in other areas.

"We're holding out that hope," Gore said when questioned whether Chelsea is believed to be alive.

Since Thursday, when Chelsea disappeared, the Sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit's operation has focused on an approximately 4-square-mile area south of the lake. Divers have also searched the water.

The area contains a web of trails where Chelsea routinely runs 4 to 6 miles.

She hasn't been seen since Thursday afternoon when she left Poway High School and headed to the area for a run.

Her black BMW was found in the west end of the Rancho Bernardo Community Park's parking lot, off West Bernardo Drive, about 6 p.m. Thursday.

The scariest part of it is, he looks like a normal guy, not one that would make you run like hell the other way.  His arms look big and could easily overpower Chelsea.  It is so very sad.

Gardner was taken into custody outside a restaurant in Escondido -- a little over seven miles away from where King went missing -- without incident, according to Sheriff Gore.  He was transported to the Sheriff's Administrative Center in San Diego, where Gardner faced questioning Sunday night.

"I want to emphasize this investigation is not over.  Our primary goal in all of this is to find Chelsea King.  We are continuing those efforts -- there are several searches going on around the county," Sheriff Gore said.

When asked if he believed King was still alive, the sheriff offered an optimistic response.

"We're holding out that hope," the sheriff said, re-emphasizing that the ultimate goal in the investigation is the safe return of King.

King went for a run on Thursday and never returned.  Sheriff Gore said the physical evidence that investigators linked to Gardner was obtained in Rancho Bernardo Community Park, where King vanished.  Her abandoned car was found in the park.

Furthermore, Sheriff Gore said investigators believe Gardner may be tied to a December 27th assault in the same park.

30 year old John Albert Gardner, who lives in a home with his mother on the edge of the park that Chelsea King disappeared, has been arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Now, police are looking at Gardner in the disappearance of Amber Dubois, last seen February 13, 2009. She lives just across the lake in Escondido, CA. Apparently, Gardner has a home in Escondido.

And I think there's a Poway side too

It is considered San Diego city. Everything south of escondido is a town in the city of san diego. If you look at the address of the R.B. community park, it is San diego.

Thats what I always thought. A Jr is named after a father, a II is named after the grandfather and a III etc is named after a father who is a jr.

A lot of people frequent the Lake Hodges area, not to mention the people who live there. It is a beautiful, scenic area. Very peaceful. We looked at houses there when we were in the market.

A registered sex offender was taken into custody and was being questioned by homicide detectives Sunday night in connection with the disappearance of Poway teenager Chelsea King, said San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.

John Albert Gardner III, 30, of Lake Elsinore, was arrested at 4:20 p.m. in front of a popular Mexican restaurant and bar called Hernandez Hide-A-Way in the tiny town of Del Dios on the west shore of Lake Hodges near Escondido.

Numerous pieces of physical evidence recovered led them to Gardner, Gore said. However, he would not elaborate, stating the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are still trying to find Chelsea.

The sheriff said the hunt for Chelsea, 17, will continue until she is found and is being expanded beyond Rancho Bernardo Community Park and the adjacent Lake Hodges, which search teams have been combing since the Poway High School senior disappeared Thursday.

“There are several searches going on around the county,” Gore said. “We are going to refocus some of our search efforts.”

Brent and Kelly King, Chelsea’s parents, reported their daughter missing at about 6 p.m. Thursday when she failed to come home from a run at the Rancho Bernardo park. Brent King found his daughter’s locked car in the parking lot at the park.

A multiagency missing-person search has continued round-the-clock since then.

“Our primary goal in all of this,” Gore said yesterday, “is to find Chelsea King.”

The sheriff also said there was “a strong possibility” Gardner may be connected to an attack on a lone female jogger in Rancho Bernardo Community Park that occurred the morning of Dec. 27.

He said investigators also were looking into the possibility of a connection between Gardner and Amber Dubois, who disappeared while walking to Escondido High School on the morning of Feb. 13, 2009. Amber was 14 at the time.

“We’re leaving no stone unturned,” he said.

Gardner is listed on the state’s Megan’s Law sex offender registry as having been convicted of committing a lewd or lascivious act upon a child under the age of 14. He was involved in a criminal case in San Diego Superior Court in 2000, but details were unavailable last night.

His home in Lake Elsinore was searched yesterday, Gore said. A neighbor said officers were especially interested in a shed behind the two-story house.

Less than two hours before Gardner’s arrest, Brent King sat down for his first in-depth interview since his daughter’s disappearance.

He said late Thursday that he came home from the gym about the same time his wife, Kelly, was returning from the grocery. It was about 5:30 p.m.

“My wife asked me if I had heard from Chels. I said, ‘No, I figured you had.’ Right then, we looked at each other and had a panic.”

Chelsea is the kind of daughter, her father said, who always checks in. If she was going to be late, she would let them know.

“We quickly called a few of her friends and asked if they had heard from Chelsea because we hadn’t,” King said. They hadn’t heard from her.

“We then had a mom share with us how to do the AT&T reverse autophone, which I’d never heard of before, and you can identify where a phone is based on the AT&T Web site.”

It showed a general geographical location.

“I started searching,” he said. While driving from his northern Poway home, Kelly called and told Brent she wanted to call 911 and he agreed.

“We just both knew something bad was happening,” he said.

Brent soon found Chelsea’s BMW parked behind the Rancho Bernardo Community Center just south of Lake Hodges. He looked inside and saw her belongings.

“I then looked behind me and I saw a running trail, and in the deepest part of my heart, I knew she was out there,” Brent said.

“So I took off down the trail. I ran down about a mile yelling out her name as long as I could, several times and in several directions. By this time it was already dusk and the Sheriff’s Department had already shown up. So I ran back,” he said.

Looking drawn and choking with emotion at times during the interview, Brent King said he would share every detail of his life, his daughter’s life and his family’s life “if it will help bring my daughter home. Please write up that I thank everybody. Thank everybody for their support and please ask them to keep bringing it until we have my daughter home.”

King works in the mortgage banking industry and said he is between jobs. His wife is a medical assistant for a dermatologist. They have one other child, a son in the eighth grade, who King was reticent to talk about given the situation.

Chelsea was born at Pomerado Hospital in Poway but the family moved away before she entered kindergarten. They lived in the Chicago area for 12 years before King was transferred back here in 2007 when Chelsea was in her freshman year. The family lives in a large home in a gated community in north Poway.

King said his wife is holding up through the terrible uncertainty.

“Kelly is a very, very, very strong Scottish/Irish girl,” he said. “She will do whatever it takes for her daughter.”

He said he wants the world to know his daughter.

“Since the moment that Chelsea graced us, she’s been a lightbulb, just a piece of energy,” he said. “When she comes into a room, you know she’s there. Whether it’s because she’s got this huge smile and she’s lighting it up or because she’s stumbling around and making somebody laugh.”

The straight-A, college-bound student who loves to play the French horn around the house has “an incredibly witty sense of humor,” King said. “She dreams such big dreams of not only seeing the world but healing the world.”

He doesn’t want to speculate about why his daughter is gone. Many have said she was always going out of her way to help others.

“I have tremendous amounts of worries,” he said. “I can’t categorize them. I don’t want to speculate but I could absolutely see my daughter going to someone’s aid. And if the roles were reversed she would be here (at the search center) leading the entire campaign.”

“You never want to be in the situation that my daughter is in and that my wife and I and son are in,” he said.

“But the amount of pain we’re going through is only offset by the amount of love that we feel over here,” he said, referring to a volunteer search center in Rancho Bernardo where thousands of volunteers have shown up to offer help.

He said he’s spoken recently with several parents of children who have gone missing, including Maurice Dubois and Carrie McGonigle, parents of Amber Dubois.

“It’s a terrible club to be in but thank God I’ve got people who have been where I am,” he said.

King said just hours before the arrest that he had a gut feeling.

“I’ve got an incredibly deep relationship with my daughter,” he said. “We share each other’s words. We have the exact same sense of humor, the exact same smiles.

“I know she’s still here. We just have to find her.”

Although he couldn’t share what police have told the family, King said, “What I can say is the effort is breathless, speechless, enormous. I can’t think of a resource they aren’t using across every department. The coordinated effort that is occurring, I’m witness to it. I’ve seen it.”

A registered sex offender has been arrested in the case of missing teen Chelsea King, but the search for the Poway High School student is not over, according to investigators.

John Albert Gardner, 30, from Lake Elsinore was arrested outside a restaurant in Escondido around 4.30 p.m., Sheriff Bill Gore said at a 7 p.m. news conference Sunday at Rancho Bernardo Community Park.

“There are several searches going on around the county,” Gore said. “We are going to refocus some of our search efforts.”

Gardner is a registered sex offender on the Megan’s law website.

“During the course of this extensive investigation evidence was discovered that linked Gardner to Ms. King in such a manner as to warrant his arrest,” Gore said. “At this time it would be in the best interest for the successful prosecution of Gardner that the evidence not be revealed in a public forum.”

Gardner was taken into custody outside of Hernandez' Hideaway Restaurant on Lake Drive in Escondido, officials said.

There’s a strong possibility that the suspect is connected to a separate attack December 27 in the same area, Gore said. When a reporter asked him if he thought the suspect was connected to the disappearance of Amber Dubois, Gore replied, “We’re looking into that.”

"I think there is a good possibility that Gardner may be linked to Amber's disappearance,” Amber’s mother Carrie McGonigle said Sunday night. “I pray that he isn't because it would be the worst case scenario for my daughter. I am praying for Chelsea’s' family."

Gardner was taken to the Sheriff's Administrative Center in San Diego, where he was being questioned by Homicide investigators.

“This investigation is ongoing, specific criminal charges against Gardner are still being determined,” Gore said

The manager of Hernandez' Hideaway, who only wanted to be named as Jeanette, waited on the suspect just before he was arrested.

“He just had a meal and left, there was nothing out of the ordinary,” she said.

The manager had never seen the suspect in the restaurant before.

Chelsea’s parents released this statement Sunday night on their official Facebook page:

    "Nothing will change for us until our beautiful daughter, Chelsea King, comes home. We will continue searching for her, and we ask that all of you do the same until she’s back with us. She is an extraordinary daughter and also someone who is committed to her community. She has huge dreams and wants to change the world. Hundreds of people are working alongside us to make sure she has that chance, and we are deeply grateful. She and our entire family need your help now for Chelsea’s safe return. We thank law enforcement for pursuing all avenues to bring this situation to an expedient, positive outcome. Earlier, on Sunday afternoon, Chelsea's parents sat down for a one-on-one interview with NBC San Diego. There was no hiding the despair and pain of living without their missing daughter.

"I can't begin to describe the depth of sorrow. It's been a nightmare," said Kelly King. "There's no other way to put it. It's your worst nightmare."

"My body hasn't stopped shaking since I came to the realization of what was occurring," said Brent King. "You just feel a complete amount of emptiness and helplessness.

The King's last saw their daughter Wednesday. They say she performed in a school concert that night, and then woke up early Thursday morning to attend a peer counseling meeting at Poway High School at 6:15 a.m.

Chelsea King, 17, apparently went for a run immediately after school on Thursday. She never returned home. Her car was found at the Rancho Bernardo Glassman Community Park. Her cell phone, Ipod, and school clothes were found inside the car.

Her parents say she was not a risk taker and would not wander from the trails. They say she preferred to run alone, which they frowned upon.

"We would never allow her to run by herself. But she's a 17-year old girl," said Brent King. "If she chose to run by herself on that day, she didn't do it because her parents said go ahead and run by yourself."

"When you're that age, you feel invincible," said Kelly King. "Bad things aren't going to happen to you."

The Kings thanked the community for their outpouring of support.

""I would have never thought this was possible in terms and love and support and the dedication and the commitment from this community," said Kelly King. She now wears a pair of earrings that say 'Hope', given to her by a stranger.

The Kings call their daughter their shining light. Brent King recalled a text message he recently sent his daughter.

"I texted her and said 'I am just so proud of you, for the kind of person you are.'  She's what every parent wants. She's that kid. You don't worry about her grades, we worried that she studied too much. 'Please, just relax, go have some fun.' She didn't want to do that because she has goals. She has dreams. She wants to change the world. That's who she is," said Brent King.

Kelly King talked about the special mother daughter bond she shares with Chelsea.

"We got to the point when she got a little bit older, we could wear the same clothes. It became a source of contention for me," said Kelly King with a laugh. "Part of me thought, 'oh goodness, you've got my clothes on.' The other part of me thought, 'that's pretty cool, I can fit into your clothes.'"

Holding out hope Chelsea King could some how hear them, the Kings sent out a heartfelt message to their daughter.

"Baby girl, we love you. You're coming home. Be strong, be as strong as I know you are," said Kelly King. "Sweetie, we love you. We love you with all of our heart and we're waiting. We're here honey. We're gonna find you."

Does anyone else think it is strange her ipod was in her car? I have never been a long distance runner but if you have an ipod, don't you usually listen to it while running.

Has anyone searched Google maps street view of the home in Lake Elsinore? The home they show has what kind of vehical? A white van, seriously a white van. I would post a pic but seem to still not be able to do that.

I think runners are advised to not listen to their ipod while running. They won't be able to hear traffic, or someone coming up behind them. I find it stranger that she left her phone in the car. Let's say she sprained and ankle or fell. I would think she would have her phone with her.

Maybe she was approached before she actually got to run. Don't know if we heard whether the car was found locked, but from the search areas guess we would assume she was on the trail.

I wonder what they found in a search of his home, and the shed out back. Also, maybe they got a warrant to search his parents house.

Tiny town of Del Dios, well duh is me, it is off of Del Dios Hwy. I am not sure, but I do not think a very large area around that lake is considered the tiny town of Del Dios. 

That is what I was wondering. Did she get abducted as she was getting out of the car and never got to hit the trails for her run. That might be why they keep saying the search is continuing outside of the park area, other places in the county.

SAN DIEGO -  A suspect was arrested Sunday on preliminary charges of suspicion of murder and rape in the disappearance of Poway teen Chelsea King.

The suspect, identified as registered sex offender John Albert Gardner, was arrested at a landmark restaurant and bar on the west side of Lake Hodges, Hernedez Hideaway (map C), on Lake Drive near Del Dios Highway at 4:30 p.m. according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The 30-year-old resident of Lake Elsinore in Riverside County is described as being 6'2" and 230 pounds.  He has a previous conviction for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age.

His mother lives in the Westwood development of San Diego near Rancho Bernardo Community Park and Lake Hodges.  It's believed he had been staying there for several days.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore announced the break in the case at a Sunday night news conference.  He said physical evidence found on the south end of Lake Hodges lead investigators to Gardner.  Reports indicate underwear found near the lake contained DNA that lead investigators to Gardner.

Gardner's home has been searched and he is being questioned by investigators.

Gore said searchers will continue looking throughout the night for Chelsea.  When asked  if the 17-year-old Poway High student is still believed to be alive, Gore said, "we're holding out that hope."

Those comments were made before jail records revealed the preliminary murder and rape charges against Gardner.

Gore said Sunday night there "is a strong possibility" that the suspect may also be linked to a December attack on a jogger in a nearby neighborhood,

The woman was jogging on a neighborhood trail through the Westwood housing development in the 10400 block of Poblado Rd (map B).   She told San Diego police she was tackled by a man who demanded money.   She thought she may have broken his nose in the scuffle.  Gardner's mother lives in the same neighborhood.

The woman was able to escape from her attacker on December 27th.   The description she provided police was similiar to the description of Gardner.  The victim described her attacker as white, 25, 5'11" and 230 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. 

The location where Chelsea King's car was found is in the neighboring park (map A).  The area where she is believed to have gone jogging is on the trails in the brushy area north of there.

Sheriff Gore said investigators are also looking into any possibility that Gardner could have played a role in the disappearance of 14-year-old Amber Dubois more than a year ago as she walked to Escondido High School.

Chelsea's family issued a statement at 9:00 Sunday night after the arrest:

OMG Shell! Thanks for that updated link. I didn't know DNA test could be done so quickly on something. This is so sad, I can't stop thinking about the fear in Chelsea's mothers face. I am so heart broken for her family.

Just imagine, he has raped and killed this beautiful girl and yet is nonchalantly arrested while eating dinner out. How can he do that?

 Sure sounds like he may have been responsible for the other attack in the same neighborhood, nobody in his family didn't notice his bloody nose and have an inkling? My comment is not to blame his mother but to point out that we all need to be aware of  too many coincidences. When another attack and massive searches are going on in your own backyard again and your RSO child just happens to be around for this event also, doesn't raise a red flag?  We can't love our children while allowing or looking the other way while someone else's children are being murdered.

& they were over at that house searching & taking pictures

SAN DIEGO: Missing Poway girl: Arrest made in missing Chelsea King. The hunt for a pedophile has yielded positive results. With the help of some 1,400 volunteers, sleuths were able to arrest a registered sex offender for his involvement in the disappearance of a teenager in a suburban San Diego.

The whole weekend was spent to zero in on the man, who is being accused of abducting a girl.

After coming to know about the disappearance of 17-year-old Chelsea King, sleuths combed the area, including Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego. The investigators quizzed locals and suspects to unravel the mystery. And at last they succeeded when with the help of some locals they were unable to lay their hands on evidence to pin down 30-year-old John Albert Gardner.

It has been learnt that the suspect lives in Riverside County. This has been confirmed by San Diego County Sheriff William Gore.

Currently, Gardner is being held by the cops who are questioning him. Efforts are being made to find out what prompted him to abduct the teenager.

Addressing reporters at a press conference, Gore said: "This investigation is ongoing and specific criminal charges are still being determined."

Besides, investigators also believe that Gardner might be involved in a December 27 assault. It was revealed that on this fateful day a female jogger was assaulted. Cops are investigating into the case

San Diego (AP) - A registered sex offender was arrested Sunday in the disappearance of a suburban San Diego teenager as some 1,400 volunteers spent the weekend searching a park and surrounding area where she disappeared three days ago, authorities said.
 
The arrest came after about 120 law enforcement officers and the volunteers had searched Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego for 17-year-old Chelsea King.
 
Investigators found evidence that led to the arrest of 30-year-old John Albert Gardner of Riverside County, San Diego County Sheriff William Gore told the Associated Press in an interview.
 
Gore said investigators, who combed the area around Lake Hodges in the park where King's car was found, discovered physical evidence linking Gardner to the case. Gore would not elaborate on the nature of the evidence. He said authorities were holding out hope for her return.
 Gardner was taken into custody at a restaurant in Escondido shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday and was questioned Sunday night.
 
"This investigation is ongoing and specific criminal charges are still being determined," Gore said at a news conference Sunday.
 
Investigators also suspect Gardner could be tied to a Dec. 27 assault on a female jogger from Colorado Springs, Colo. in the park, a popular regional recreation area full of running trails, Gore said.
 
Gardner's residence in Lake Elsinore 75 miles north of San Diego was searched Sunday, Gore said.
 
He had to register as a sex offender because of a conviction for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, the Megan's Law Web site said.
 
It was not immediately clear whether Gardner has hired an attorney.
 
King's parents continued pleas for her return and said the arrest offered them no relief.

"Nothing will change for us until our beautiful daughter, Chelsea King, comes home," Brent and Kelly King said in a statment released through a family spokeswoman Sunday night. "We will continue searching for her, and we ask that all of you do the same until she's back with us."
 
Gore said the search for King and for further evidence would continue throughout the night and expand beyond the park.

The volunteers also handed out flyers during the weekend effort.
 
"It's a reflection of who she is and what kind of person she is," Brent King said of the numbers showing up to help. "She's that kind of kid that everybody loves, and it shows."
 
Chelsea King's BMW was found in the park after she failed to return to her home in suburban Poway, Calif. on Thursday, sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell said.
 
Investigators also looked for clues on the teen's cell phone, which was found in her car, and on her home computer.
 
The search for Chelsea King, a straight-A senior at Poway High School, also took to the Internet, where a Facebook page generated more than 24,000 fans. A Web site was created at findchelsea.com.

Sex Offender Held After Calif. Teen Disappears
Authorities and volunteers are widening a search for a 17-year-old missing in San Diego County after a registered sex offender was arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Some 1,400 volunteer searchers and more than 100 law enforcement officers failed to find Chelsea King on Sunday, but evidence was found that led to the arrest of 30-year-old John Albert Gardner of Lake Elsinore, Calif. some 75 miles to the north, San Diego County Sheriff William Gore told the Associated Press in an interview.

King disappeared on Thursday after going for a run near Lake Hodges at Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego, a popular regional park full of running trails. Her car, with her cell phone and iPod inside, were found later that night.
Gore said investigators discovered physical evidence linking Gardner to the case. Gore would not elaborate on the nature of the evidence. He said they were holding out hope that she would be found.

Gardner was taken into custody at a restaurant in Escondido shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday and was being questioned Sunday night.

"This investigation is ongoing and specific criminal charges are still being determined," Gore said at a news conference.

Investigators also suspect Gardner could be tied to a Dec. 27 assault on a female jogger from Colorado Springs, Gore said.

Gardner's Riverside County residence was also searched Sunday, Gore said.

He was required to register as a sex offender because of a conviction for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14, the Megan's Law Web site said.

It was not immediately clear whether Gardner has hired an attorney.

King's parents continued pleas for her return and said the arrest offered them no relief.

"Nothing will change for us until our beautiful daughter, Chelsea King, comes home," Brent and Kelly King said in a statment released through a family spokeswoman Sunday night. "We will continue searching for her, and we ask that all of you do the same until she's back with us."

SAN DIEGO —  A registered sex offender was arrested Sunday in the disappearance of a suburban San Diego teenager as some 1,400 volunteers spent the weekend searching a park and surrounding area where she disappeared three days ago, authorities said.

The arrest came after about 120 law enforcement officers and the volunteers had searched Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego for 17-year-old Chelsea King.

Investigators found evidence that led to the arrest of 30-year-old John Albert Gardner of Riverside County, San Diego County Sheriff William Gore told the Associated Press in an interview.

Gore said investigators, who combed the area around Lake Hodges in the park where King's car was found, discovered physical evidence linking Gardner to the case. Gore would not elaborate on the nature of the evidence.

Gardner was taken into custody outside a business in Escondido shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday and was questioned Sunday night.

Ok, I finally found it in print in a news source so I feel like it can be posted here definitively:

"Investigators were searching a home on Matinal Road near West Bernardo Drive late Sunday night, according to KGTV Channel 10. Public records link an address on that street to Gardner."

The home is near Westwood Elementary, on a canyon area that connects through the canyon right over to Poblado RIGHT at the access point where all of the activity has been.

Meaning he can cut behind the home, on the trail from the school to Poblado between Moon Song and Smokesignal, just cross the street, and continue on the trail directly to the waterfall area I was showing in my photos earlier. Also, that access point on Poblado is where all the LEO and searchers were staging earlier. Plus, that's where the first attack happened.

In addition, he'd just have to go around the corner, make two quick turns, and could be right at the access point if he went by car.

I won't give the house address, but if you google map Westwood Elementary, 92127 and look at the canyon area arcoss the street you'll see what I mean.

SAN DIEGO -  A suspect was arrested Sunday on preliminary charges of suspicion of murder and rape in the disappearance of Poway teen Chelsea King.

The suspect, identified as registered sex offender John Albert Gardner, was arrested at a landmark restaurant and bar on the west side of Lake Hodges, Hernedez Hideaway (map C), on Lake Drive near Del Dios Highway at 4:30 p.m. according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The 30-year-old resident of Lake Elsinore in Riverside County is described as being 6'2" and 230 pounds.  He has a previous conviction for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age.

His mother lives in the Westwood development of San Diego near Rancho Bernardo Community Park and Lake Hodges.  It's believed he had been staying there for several days.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore announced the break in the case at a Sunday night news conference.  He said physical evidence found on the south end of Lake Hodges lead investigators to Gardner.  Reports indicate underwear found near the lake contained DNA that lead investigators to Gardner.

Gardner's home has been searched and he is being questioned by investigators.

Gore said searchers will continue looking throughout the night for Chelsea.  When asked  if the 17-year-old Poway High student is still believed to be alive, Gore said, "we're holding out that hope."

Those comments were made before jail records revealed the preliminary murder and rape charges against Gardner.

I wonder if the statement about him being caked in mud is true, I wouldn't think you would go to town that way. Also, the dna found in Chelsea's underwear, that was very quick getting results back, and with all the rain, I would have thought that perhaps it would have been washed away.

A registered sex offender was in jail Monday morning on suspicion of murder and rape in connection with the disappearance of Poway teenager Chelsea King, the Sheriff’s Department said.

John Albert Gardner III, 30, who listed his home address in Lake Elsinore, was arrested in front of a popular Mexican restaurant and bar called Hernandez Hide-A-Way in the tiny community of Del Dios on the west shore of Lake Hodges near Escondido at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said Sunday night.

Numerous pieces of physical evidence led investigators to Gardner, Gore said. He would not elaborate, stating the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are still trying to find Chelsea, 17, who went to Rancho Bernardo Comunity Park for a run and never came home.

Her parents said the arrest would not stop them from continuing their search for Chelsea.

“Nothing will change for us until our beautiful daughter, Chelsea King, comes home,” said Kelly and Brent King in a statement Sunday night. “We will continue searching for her, and we ask that all of you do the same until she’s back with us.”

Gore said the hunt for the teenager will continue until she is found and is being expanded beyond Rancho Bernardo Community Park and the adjacent Lake Hodges, which search teams have been combing since the Poway High School senior disappeared Thursday.

Investigators were seen at a townhome on Matinal Road near West Bernardo Drive in San Diego early Monday morning that is about one mile south of the nearest entrance to the park were Chelsea went missing. Public records link an address on that street to Gardner.

San Diego police officers blocked off a section of the street in either direction from the townhome. Investigators could be seen walking to and from the residence.

“There are several searches going on around the county,” Gore said. “We are going to refocus some of our search efforts.”

Chelsea’s parents reported their daughter missing about 6 p.m. Thursday when she failed to come home from a run at the Rancho Bernardo park. Brent King found his daughter’s locked car in the parking lot at the park.

A multiagency missing-person search has continued round-the-clock since then.

“Our primary goal in all of this,” Gore said Sunday, “is to find Chelsea King.”

The sheriff also said there was “a strong possibility” Gardner may be connected to an attack on a lone female jogger in Rancho Bernardo Community Park the morning of Dec. 27.

He said investigators also were looking into the possibility of a connection between the cases of Gardner and Amber Dubois, who disappeared while walking to Escondido High School on Feb. 13, 2009. Amber was 14 at the time.

“We’re leaving no stone unturned,” Gore said.

Gardner is listed in the state’s Megan’s Law sex offender registry as having been convicted of committing a lewd or lascivious act upon a child younger than 14. He was involved in a criminal case in San Diego Superior Court in 2000, but details were not imediately available.

The address he listed as his home in Lake Elsinore was searched Sunday and a neighbor said officers were especially interested in a shed behind the two-story house.

The residence on Matinal Road is about 1,100 feet from Westwood Elementary School. Since the passage in November 2006 of Proposition 83, known as “Jessica’s Law,” registered sex offenders are prohibited from living within 2,000 feet of schools or parks. The law is currently being challenged in California’s courts.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

Gardner listed his home address in Lake Elsinore, according to the sex offender registry.

Less than two hours before Gardner’s arrest, Brent King sat down for his first in-depth interview since his daughter’s disappearance.

Brent King said he came home from the gym about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, about the same time his wife, Kelly, was returning from the grocery store.

“My wife asked me if I had heard from Chels. I said, ‘No, I figured you had.’ Right then, we looked at each other and had a panic,” Brent King said in an interview.

Chelsea is the kind of daughter who always checks in, her father said. If she was going to be late, she would let them know.

“We quickly called a few of her friends and asked if they had heard from Chelsea because we hadn’t,” Brent King said. The friends hadn’t heard from her.

“We then had a mom share with us how to do the AT&T reverse autophone, which I’d never heard of before, and you can identify where a phone is based on the AT&T Web site.”

The Web site showed a general geographical location.

“I started searching,” he said. While driving from his northern Poway home, his wife called and told Brent King she wanted to call 911 and he agreed.

“We just both knew something bad was happening,” he said.

Brent King soon found Chelsea’s BMW parked behind the Rancho Bernardo Community Center just south of Lake Hodges. He looked inside and saw her belongings.

“I then looked behind me and I saw a running trail, and in the deepest part of my heart, I knew she was out there,” the father said.

“So I took off down the trail. I ran down about a mile yelling out her name as long as I could, several times and in several directions. By this time it was already dusk and the Sheriff’s Department had already shown up. So I ran back,” he said.

Looking drawn and choking with emotion at times during the interview, Brent King said he would share every detail of his life, his daughter’s life and his family’s life “if it will help bring my daughter home. Please write up that I thank everybody. Thank everybody for their support and please ask them to keep bringing it until we have my daughter home.”

Brent King works in the mortgage banking industry and said he is between jobs. His wife is a medical assistant for a dermatologist. They have one other child, a son in the 8th grade, whom the father was reticent to talk about given the situation.

Chelsea was born at Pomerado Hospital in Poway but the family moved away before she entered kindergarten. They lived in the Chicago area for 12 years before he was transferred to San Diego County in 2007 when Chelsea was in her freshman year. The family lives in a large home in a gated community in north Poway.

Brent King said his wife is holding up through the terrible uncertainty.

“Kelly is a very, very, very strong Scottish/Irish girl. She will do whatever it takes for her daughter,” he said.

The father wants the world to know his daughter.

“Since the moment that Chelsea graced us, she’s been a light bulb, just a piece of energy,” he said. “When she comes into a room, you know she’s there. Whether it’s because she’s got this huge smile and she’s lighting it up or because she’s stumbling around and making somebody laugh.”

The straight-A, college-bound student who loves to play the French horn around the house has “an incredibly witty sense of humor,” Brent King said. “She dreams such big dreams of not only seeing the world but healing the world.”

Before learning of Gardner’s arrest, Brent King said he did not want to speculate about why his daughter is gone. Many have said she was always going out of her way to help others.

“I have tremendous amounts of worries,” he said. “I can’t categorize them. I don’t want to speculate but I could absolutely see my daughter going to someone’s aid. And if the roles were reversed, she would be here (at the search center) leading the entire campaign.”

“You never want to be in the situation that my daughter is in and that my wife and I and son are in,” the father said.

“But the amount of pain we’re going through is only offset by the amount of love that we feel over here,” he said, referring to a volunteer search center in Rancho Bernardo where thousands of volunteers have shown up to offer help.

Brent King said he’s spoken recently with several parents of children who have gone missing, including Maurice Dubois and Carrie McGonigle, parents of Amber Dubois.

Just hours before the arrest , the father said he had a gut feeling.

“I’ve got an incredibly deep relationship with my daughter,” he said. “We share each other’s words. We have the exact same sense of humor, the exact same smiles.”

“I know she’s still here. We just have to find her.”

Although he couldn’t share what police have told the family, Brent King said: “What I can say is the effort is breathless, speechless, enormous. I can’t think of a resource they aren’t using across every department. The coordinated effort that is occurring, I’m witness to it. I’ve seen it.”

I pray for her parents to keep their strength strong...they sound like wonderful people...my heart breaks for them.

My heart breaks for this family.  When will things change so that these offenders are locked up and never let out?  You can't rehab them, they cannot be controlled, that is a fact, they continue to offend and kill.  This is so frustrating.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

I was looking at the arial view on Google maps and the street between Moon song and smoke signal drive, I can't see what the name is on my computer screen it is blurred a bit, it is a something like Monticook? Anyhow there is a little parking lot that is right next to a trail. He could have easily been waiting in a car. Where is the waterfall this poster is talking about?

I don't know exactly where this waterfall is located at. One thing I'm confused with is he has hid Chelsea's body well, wonder why the sport's bra and underwear were found so easily? I'm of course glad they were, but it seems odd that he was careless with some items of clothing. Also wondered if there is searching going on along Ortega Highway, I realize that would be extremely difficult, just wondered.

In the area near the waterfall down below Legends neighborhood (visible from the end of Smokesignal) there were several dozen search teams that seemed to be focusing on the trails there, the rocks and waterfall area carefully, and then the finger of the lake that is right there. This may help also, this was said by a local on WS that lives near there.

I am on google maps street view. I have gone up and down smoke signal, moonsong, poblado and little streets leading of them, I have to say, there doesn't seem to be easy access to the trails. I think the simplest thing to say is he used the same parking lot that Chelsea did. I would suppose if he walked he could jump a fence or a gardrail but it doesn't look like it would be the easist walk. I would think if a man was going to attack someone, he would not try to draw a lot of attention to himself. I bet he jogged in, jogged out and left, just like everyone else does. Plus, there doesn't seem to be anywhere anyone can park their car that wouldn't draw attention and I doubt he walked. So my guess for whatever it is worth is he parked in the same lot that Chelsea did.

ok so I am wrong, wrong, wrong. There is street access to the area off duenda, near where publado bends around from moonsong there it is right there and near to his parents home. It is in the area that zig zags after the footbridge that comes south from the parking lot. I bet he sees people jogging in and out of that access all of the time.
I have no idea what and if this means anything but I had to find it. Sorry for the multiple posts.

San Diego County :  Investigators in San Diego County continued their search Monday for a missing 17-year-old girl  Chelsea King after John Albert Gardner III was arrested in connection with her disappearance.

John Albert Gardner III, 30, a registered sex offender was arrested Sunday afternoon in Escondido after San Diego County investigators found evidence linking the disappearance of Chelsea King from the Lake Hodges area.Cheksea King disappeared Thursday after failing to return from an afternoon run near Lake Hodges.  Helicopters scoured the area and volunteers waded chest-deep in the murky water looking for signs of the Chelsea King.

Friends set up a Chelsea King Facebook page and Chelsea King website to help the search effort. The case is being handled by homicide investigators of San Diego County. Friends of Chelsea King has posted pictures of Chelsea King on facebook profile.

I am holding out hope that this sicko did not have anything to do with Amber's disappearance. Having said that, wasn't there an astrologer who said that Amber was in this same lake early on in her case?

I did her chart about one week ago but wasn't sure where to post it. From what I saw, the witnesses who reported two men dumping a plastic sack of unknown contents in Lake Wohlford is the correct location of the victim. The chart showed she was initially taken in a residential tract and then displaced to the East in water. When I learned there was a Lake Wohlford due east of the abduction site, it all came together.

At the school, students and staff wore blue shirts to represent the color of Chelsea’s eyes and tied blue ribbons around light poles on campus.

Citing the “very difficult and emotional weekend,” principal Scott Fisher addressed students over the loudspeaker Monday morning, thanking the students for participating in the search efforts.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever been so proud of the school,” he said, his voice cracking at times with emotion. “Students have just been out there caring for one another, and that’s major during a difficult time.”

According to court records in Gardner’s previous conviction, Gardner saw the victim and a 14-year-old friend waiting for a school bus on March 16, 2000, and he offered them a ride. Both girls accepted the offer, but the younger girl also decided to go with Gardner to watch movies at his home.

Gardner started giving the 13-year-old a massage and kissing her as the two were watching “Patch Adams” alone in his townhouse. He then picked her up, placed her on the couch and began rubbing himself against her genital area.

The girl protested, but Gardner persisted, according to the documents.

He brought her upstairs to a bedroom where he got on top of her and continued rubbing and touching her. He also tried to take her pants and underwear off, despite her objections.

Eventually, Gardner said, “You know what, I can’t take this anymore,” and hit the girl repeatedly in the face.

“He had his hand on my mouth and I couldn’t breath(e), and I got pretty fuzzy after he hit me, and I’m not sure if I blacked out,” the girl testified during a preliminary hearing, which is usually the first opportunity prosecutors have to present witnesses in a criminal case.

Wearing only one shoe on and holding her pants up, she was eventually able to run out the door to a neighbor’s house across the street.

Gardner got into his vehicle and drove away. He was found at a nearby gas station and arrested. Gardner told police he had picked the girl up that morning and dropped her off in front of her apartment complex at 8:40 a.m. He claimed he was innocent and blamed the victim’s mother for the beating.

On Sunday, Sheriff Gore said there was “a strong possibility” Gardner may be connected to an attack on a lone female jogger in Rancho Bernardo Community Park the morning of Dec. 27.

He said investigators also were looking into the possibility of a connection between Gardner and Amber Dubois, who disappeared while walking to Escondido High School on Feb. 13, 2009. Amber was 14 at the time.

“We’re leaving no stone unturned,” Gore said.

Chelsea’s parents reported their daughter missing at about 6 p.m. Thursday when she failed to come home from a run at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Brent King found his daughter’s locked car in the parking lot at the park.

A missing-person search has continued round-the-clock since then.

At a two-story, tan-colored townhome on Matinal Road in the Westwood neighborhood of Rancho Bernardo Monday morning, extinguished police flares were the only clue that the place had been searched by police overnight.

The dwelling is close to Rancho Bernardo park. Neighbors said Gardner’s mother and stepfather have lived there for about a decade. They said Gardner showed up occasionally and would say hello to nearby residents as he came and went.

“I couldn’t sleep at all last night,” said Jimmy Ashker, who has lived across the street since 1988. He said he recognized Gardner right away when police showed him a photo of the suspect last night.

“I kept playing things over and over in my head. I was just wondering if there was one thing I overlooked that could have made a difference” and led to earlier intervention by law enforcement, Ashker said Monday morning.

Upon hearing a knock on the front door, a man inside the Gardner home said: “Can you get off the property, please?”

In Lake Elsinore, neighbors on Gillette Street — a hillside tract of blue-collar homes overlooking the lake — said Gardner sometimes visited a house owned by his grandmother. They didn’t see any signs of criminal activity there and were surprised by Sunday’s law-enforcement search of the property.

A neighbor said officers were especially interested in a shed behind the two-story house.

To get to Hernandez Hideaway, you can take two routes. You can either go down Valley Parkway which turns into Del Dios Hwy or you can take the 15 to Via Rancho Parkway and that too leads you to Hernandez Hideaway.

I hope that they are checking the lake area all around the little town of Del Dios. There are a lot of remote places in that area as well. It is strange that he chose to go to Del Dios to eat lunch. There are other restaurants that he could have picked off of the 15. Perhaps it is just a favorite or she is somewhere between the lake off of the 15 and the tiny town of Del Dios.

Mt woodson if off Via Rancho Parkway.. and a hiker claims to have seen him, or a guys resembling him, there.

Picking up a teen on her way to school is his past MO. I don't think Amber would have simply gone with him, if she didn't know him, but he lived in that area at the time, did she know him or know of him? He may have changed his ways after the Amber since her case got a lot of attention in that area. that could explain why he targeted joggers rather then school children.

After questioning the operator about whether or not they were still searching for Chelsea King, the operator confirmed that they were, but that it was not possible to speak to a detective regarding the case. In addition, Integra Scan has a full address history on Gardner dating back to 2000, as well as four photos, while the Office of the Attorney General only has one photo and the incorrect address for Gardner. The San Diego Sheriff's Department has stated that they have valuable evidence linking Gardner to the case, but we feel they are looking in the wrong location for Chelsea King. It is highly likely that additional evidence, and perhaps Chelsea King, could be located at this current address.

I am too NoRose - there are to many instances, and it is because the light sentences given to these monsters - we must change things and soon - our children and grandchildren are at great risk.  I think about this and it frightens the heck out of me because I have a 23 year old daughter who is in college (not unlike many of us monkeys) she thinks I text her to much and don't have to worry - Pfffft we do have to worry - we have to worry big time!

Too bad they don't sew GPS monitoring devices under their skin to track their every move.  I can't believe this guy's first offense (?) was when he was 20?  Wondering around free as a bird with no probation other than to register his address, which no one checks up on anyway?  Makes one wonder what he's been doing for the last 10yrs.

This why we do such research in these threads.. Amber's thread has lots of crimes committed recent and past  looking for a pattern of behavior that may be repeated.

His first offense at age 20, that we know of. I imagine there were prior victims.

The rates of hispanic sex crimes committed in southern California is astronomical. I am not scapegoating.. It is a statistic. It is fact.
You are correct that society is sick.. crimes are committed by all kinds of people.

We had this guy on RADAR and LE was advised to look at all pedophiles in Escondido after Amber Dubois went missing. We provided a list of names and address to the family. It was posted in Amber's thread. This Gardner was on the list.
LE told the family of Amber they had all been checked out.
So therefore I was looking at statistic information for other possible culprits.

You are so correct though .. We are lucky that this police department went much further to solve a crime. In Amber's case, Amber was considered a run away and police are on video discounting any crime committed.

I know that in some small way Amber's situation heightened the efforts in this case.
I am so happy that Tim Miller was there too. You can not ask for a better search team.

SAN DIEGO -  Formal charges are expected Wednesday against the suspect arrested Sunday in the disappearance of Poway teen Chelsea King.

The suspect, identified as registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III, was arrested on preliminary charges of murder and rape.  He was taken into custody at a landmark restaurant and bar on the west side of Lake Hodges, Hernedez Hideaway (map C), on Lake Drive near Del Dios Highway at 4:30 p.m. according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The search for Chelsea resumed Monday morning.   

Sheriff's spokeswoman Susan Plese says volunteers and searchers are looking for anything that could help find the missing girl.

Gardner remains jailed. San Diego County Sheriff William Gore says questioning has been unproductive.

Monday, dozens of searchers waded into the water to comb the shallow wetland areas of Lake Hodges while divers looked under the water.  Monday afternoon they were concentrating on the west end of the lake near the boat launch (map D).

The 30-year-old resident of Lake Elsinore in Riverside County is described as being 6'2" and 230 pounds.  He has a previous conviction for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age.

His mother lives in the Westwood development of San Diego near Rancho Bernardo Community Park and Lake Hodges.  It's believed he had been staying there for several days.  Investigators search the house on Matinal Road (map E) Sunday night.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore announced the break in the case at a Sunday night news conference.  He said physical evidence found on the south end of Lake Hodges lead investigators to Gardner.  Reports indicate underwear belonging to Chelsea found near the lake contained DNA that lead investigators to Gardner.

Gardner's home has been searched and he is being questioned by investigators.

Gore said searchers will continue looking throughout the night for Chelsea.  When asked  if the 17-year-old Poway High student is still believed to be alive, Gore said, "we're holding out that hope."

Those comments were made before jail records revealed the preliminary murder and rape charges against Gardner.

The woman was jogging on a neighborhood trail through the Westwood housing development in the 10400 block of Poblado Rd (map B).   She told San Diego police she was tackled by a man who demanded money.   She thought she may have broken his nose in the scuffle.  Gardner's mother lives in the same neighborhood.

The woman was able to escape from her attacker on December 27th.   The description she provided police was similiar to the description of Gardner.  The victim described her attacker as white, 25, 5'11" and 230 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

The location where Chelsea King's car was found is in the neighboring park (map A).  The area where she is believed to have gone jogging is on the trails in the brushy area north of there.

Sheriff Gore said investigators are also looking into any possibility that Gardner could have played a role in the disappearance of 14-year-old Amber Dubois more than a year ago as she walked to Escondido High School.

Chelsea's family issued a statement at 9:00 Sunday night after the arrest:

”Nothing will change for us until our beautiful daughter, Chelsea King, comes home.  We will continue searching for her, and we ask that all of you do the same until she’s back with us. She is an extraordinary daughter and also someone who is committed to her community.   She has huge dreams and wants to change the world. Hundreds of people are working alongside us to make sure she has that chance, and we are deeply grateful.  She and our entire family need your help now for Chelsea’s safe return.   We thank law enforcement for pursuing all avenues to bring this situation to an expedient, positive outcome.  We will be posting regular updates from our family on Facebook page: Chelsea King Search Center.“
