Guys, it's the program, trust me. I worked MUCH harder on the simpler avatars that I did at first, because I drew or painted in what I couldn't figure out, or had to make every adjustment frame by frame. A computer tech at work finally helped me figure out how to paste on an animation and maintain the colors, and that was a huge help. Actually, the "red's" avatars was one of the easiest.
The guy told me that Photoshop was the same program used by Professional magazines like Playboy, no less, and that I probably knew how to manipulate 1/100th of what can be done on it. There are still some nagging problems I run into with just doing these avatars, and I know there's an easier way to do almost everything than what I'm doing. But thanks for the kind words.

Monkeys, I just did a lengthy post on the new Peter de Vries thread about Max Devries. I hope no one finds this confusing!

Because of the last names, I hope Mr. deVries will take to heart what "the dark side" has tried to do to Max's mother - and see the similarity between that case and Natalee's.

Mine is the first post on the thread. It has all the basic information about Max and his mom's foundation, and includes Kat_Gram's verification that the foundation is valid. Also includes SunFreak's post on the M&C thread (page 6) which is an article by a Detroit TV station about Max that was done AFTER Natalee disappeared.

I hope that Monkeys can round up a few of the disgusting posts by scubajap et al attempting to trash Mrs. DeVries, so Mr. de Vries won't think we're making up this stuff.

(Please try not to duplicate - that might try his patience.)

Finally - Please don't misunderstand: I am not trying to make that thread about Max. I want Mr. de Vries to see the pattern. I am sure he is hearing from scubajap et al about Natalee, too.

See where I'm going? I want their own words to discredit them.

I am sure there are many other things we want to bring to the attention of Mr. de Vries - this is just one of them.

This broke just around the time the brothers were released from jail, and had people thinking along different lines.
Max de Vries was not alone when he went out on a jet ski, he was with a family friend David Stacy, 56. Max's father had died 14 months before, and it could have been Mom's boyfriend, but I think that was kind of quick, so I don't know.
David Stacy reported that Max's jet ski stalled, and when he went to help Max, his stalled too.
David then claimed the jet ski's capsized and the two hung on. Max eventually tired, fell away and drifted off. Search and Rescue found David Stacy hanging on to the Jet skis I don't know how many hours later. Max could not be found.
Now supposedly, but this is rumor as far as I have been able to see, I haven't found anything to confirm it on the net anywhere,
David was arrested in the states on suspicion of murder because there was a very big life insurance policy on Max. Then it turns out that they brought the boy out of hiding in Brazil because it was all an insurance scam.
I was told by someone that they saw it being reported on CNN, I have not been able to find any reference to it anywhere, but maybe some of you have more time and experience with that.
This got a few people here thinking, but the police tell me there are no big insurance policies on Natalee.

Dirty Hand?  Could be that he has been identified but not yet brought down, but the island is coming down and he will be shown to be the dirty hand dealer that he was with crime.  Just do a google on Rudy Croes and his connetions with money laundering, etc.  I am sure he did not stop that just because he was exposed.  I found a lot of stuff on a site about the Chemleys' and our FBI but it has been moved.  I wish I had not just saved it but copied when I found it.  My now-deceased attorney friend from Tampa who once was an assistant US attorney gave me some ideas on how to find some of these things.  Arubans at all levels, according to her, were very involved in criminal activity in Florida.

The weather here is just wonderful today too.  Thanks Carnut for sending it my way.  Did I mention that I don't like cold weather, not one bit, not even a tiny bit.  Well, only if it includes a lovely snowfall.

Here is another post about missing Max.......not sure how we would find verification about the validity of such.......But  I hope you don't mind my voicing my opinion about the Max DeVries case.....I still have questions about this. 1) When Max went missing why would his mother leave Aruba in 3 days?2) Why wouldn't she want them to continue to search for his body?3) Why wouldn't there be any further news articles or programs about Max? 4) Mrs DeVries must know of the accusations of fraud, why not adress them?
The foundation is one thing, but all info I find on the web is old ,little current info even for those who want to donate. Please don't get me wrong. I  think ALE was willing to brush Max's disappearance under the rug, but Yvonne DeVries has done nothing to suggest this. I wish we could be certain that this woman was totally innocent of what happened to her son ie Where is this David Stacy that was apparently involved? does he live in Michigan now also?

Greta leaked some more info about the phonecall on her blog. Greta says that the phonecall from Aruba to the states was to a friend of Natalees. The friend was not home so the call was recorded on an answering machine. The caller never spoke but there was some background noise, then a male voice asks "are you calling home" then the call ended.

National Enquirer adds that the background noise was as if they were riding in a car, and the call was made from 2 - 5 am the morning of the disappearance.
And there source for the info was the Aruban police.
(I don't see how they can't nail down a specific time)

I remember the Diario editor talking about the call, saying it was from the Montana area but because it was a cell, they couldn't track the location precisely.

Another strange piece of info for ya. 14 yr old Max de Vries went "missing" in Aruba and has been reported to be alive and living in Brazil, according to Brazilian police.

Thanks - I don't know enough to know if I want them or not. :lol:  Here's the thing: I'm looking at doing something with sock monkey stuff that I would sell. Specifically, I'm considering custom making sock monkeys and writing stories about them. For instance, an adult would send me a photo and list of activities for a specific child. I would custom make a poseable sock monkey that would resemble the child, pose and photograph the monkey doing activities the child likes, write and "publish" a story that would include the pics, then ship the custom monkey together with the story.

However, I'm still a little lost at this point and not sure what all I will end up needing computer-wise in order to make this happen in a professional way.  :?

We were down there when it happened. Most of the time when I saw folks on jetskis, they did not have life jackets on. I read all the newspapers at the time, and a life jacket was never mentioned. The young man's jetski had mechanical problems, and the man that was with him was trying to tow him to shore, and they ended up flooding the engines. They tried to tie the machines together to wait for a rescue, but they were drifting four miles offshore. They abandoned the machines, and the man was attempting to swim to shore for help when he was rescued. In the meantime, he lost sight of the boy. I tried to post a trip report yesterday, but it did not appear for some reason. What I had mentioned was that I was impressed how the newspaper in Aruba covered the story--very compassionate, honoring the privacy of the family, etc. I'm so used to our press/TV sensationalizing everything that it really struck me that you could sense that Aruba shared their loss. Folks from La Cabana, the jetski company, and government officials helped arrange a memorial service on the beach and arranged for the family to be taken out by boat so they could release messages out in the ocean for Max (the young man who was lost). I hope this will help the family find some kind of closure to this nightmare.

Think the short story is that once you start working with digital photos you will see that some are 'too bright', some are 'too dark' and some are 'too faded' and some are 'fuzzy'.

You can adjust brightness/contrast/color manually thru the menu's, but it's an art/skill to do so. Using Intellihance you chose enhance an wa la, the photo looks a whole lot better. Course sometimes it's overdone or just not right so you undo or just fade back a bit until you get there, but 90% of the time Intellihance gets it right on.

Now for the fuzzy, Intellihance helps a bit, but in most cases I do a menu for 'sharpen edges' then do a bit of 'contrast' and live with the result.

The other biggie on the net, is 'file size'.

You can have 'big images' that can be either 'big files' or 'small files'.

Resolution and Image size kinda go hand in hand, a 1024x768 image at 600dpi can be 100meg in file size, the same 1024x768 image at 80 dpi can be in the 100k size. Then when saving one can chose 'quality' of image, the higher the quality the higher the file size. A range of 1 to 10 is usually what is used and quality of 1 for a 1024x768 80dpi image can get down to 10k in file size and the degredation of the image quality can be seen in a web brower. A quality of 10 for 1024x768 80dpi image will be the 100k in size and look great in a web browser but then take up a bit of bandwidth getting to the surfer. I used to use an image quality of 3 on my images trying to keep the viewable image acceptable while keeping the file size low enough not to slow down uploading. Now a days I've started using a quality of 5 on my images and have a bit larger image file sizes around 50 or 60k. This looks good on broadband and loads quickly at the expense of
the dialup folks having a bit more slow loading.

Now if all you intend to do is print images and mail them, none of the above would apply.

Oh one other tip, with digital images you can always resize big images to smaller, but you can't resize small images to larger. (well you can, but not with acceptable results).

Always start with the largest image size possible and then enhance, crop and resize from there.

Having computer problems so if I disappear off the radar in next few days that will be the reason.  No idea what the problem is but took several reboots and two system restores to fire it up this morning.  Will talk to my favourite Techie tomorrow and see if he has any ideas.

Angie, my son and his wife had been married about 7 years when she got pregnant.  She went to the bathroom at 3 a.m. and did her test.  She took the phone in the closet and called me because she could not wait until morning to tell someone and she knew I was the only person that would listen at 3 a.m.  At 7:30 the next morning, our son called to tell me.  I pretended I knew nothing and let him tell me the new.  I have not until this day told him that I knew before him. :lol:

Tylergal  Love your new rose too.  I love the sunset coloured roses best.  Have a nice small one in my garden called "Apricot Nectar"  Has a sweet scent as well.  Not much room for roses so have a few miniature ones and they are so cute with perfectly formed flowers.  Soil is really bad here with stick-to-your-boots or hard-as-a-rock clay and no way to dig out and replace with good stuff.  So I have planted natives which are drought resistant and love the clay.  All my "exotics" are in pots where I can feed and control soil quality.  Works so far.

Apricot Nectar is a beautiful rose and it smells good.  I love that rose. I gave that one to a friend who was totally enabled to roses from that day forward but she never wanted anything but apricot roses.  Our soil is pretty bad here, as there were so many years of cotton growing and not caring for the soil.

OK I am back with a clean bill of health.  Definately no nasties lurking in my computer so must be some sort of technical blip.   I have no patience with mechanical or technical things that do not work as and when they should.  Now I hope Robots does not get upset with that remark  8)  What is the approx. life span of a cordless mouse?  I know it would depend on how often used so would say a few hours use each day.
Have been multi-tasking : chores, garden maintenance, run to shops.  Nearly skittled a young kid, about 6 at the most, on a pushbike.  Decided to ride right across road in front of me.  Gave him a polite toot so I got the one finger and a mouthful of abuse.  Didn't hear what he said but his mouth was going like a ventriloquist's dummy on steroids.   Hope next motorist he tries that with has brakes at least as good as mine.  Little ratbag.

I print out a lot of my photography.  I've found that if I use a higher ppi (pixels per inch) and then size the picture to 4x6" you get a better photo. I used to print at the standard 72 ppi after sizing it. Good quality, but above makes better quality.  I found that if I sized it, then increased the ppi, the picture became bigger (resized itself) for some reason.  

In addition I bought a storyteller photo book creator.  What it does is allow you to make one bound book at a time.

I also bought a book that basically teaches you how to manipulate your photos to merge with all kinds of gifs or jpegs, and backgrounds into a storytelling page.

Haven't used them yet.  Waiting for my cousin to finish writing our family history after 30 years of research and translating my grandfather's diaries into English.  It's supposed to be done by early summer.  Then I'm going to make it into a fancy book with beautiful backgrounds, fonts and such telling our story along with all the old, old photographs.

If Guido really is gay, then he might really enjoy prison life.  :shock:

Yes on printing more dpi is best, but then result in larger file sizes.

The reason 72dpi is adequate on the web is that most computer monitors are still displaying at 72dpi so any more dpi than that is just wasted bandwidth and file space.

Like everything as time goes by moniters will display more dpi and bandwidth will increase for most and storage cababilities will increase so it's a judgement call as to when to revise one's images to best fit ones needs. I tend to try to continue to support the lowest common denominator, like old monitors and dialup connections, that way everyone at least gets to see what I put out without too much difficulty.

Are they homeless because they are mentally ill or do they become that way because of their lifestyle?  When society begins to care more and protect their weaker members and worry less about their own interests mankind will have taken a giant leap forward.

Homelessness being just not enough homes?  How simplistic and totally wrong.  Most of the homeless have extended families who would like to help them, but they refuse the help and all the conditions it would bring into their lives.  They just can't handle it for various reasons from mental illness to addictions to emotional issues, etc.

Lots of homeless here - especially youngsters.  They have a falling out with parents (we all remember having those) and then they can just waltz down to local Centrelink (Welfare office) and get support to live away from home.  In a lot of cases the welfare officers advise them to move out.  Rot!!!  Unless kids are being abused they should be in their own homes. Older persons have so many other problems.   It is very sad.

I'm in on the 90% or more of what we call homeless are by choice.

I agree that by most of our standards the folks are mentally ill and do choose that lifestyle due to paranoia and possibly in some cases just by rational choice and yes the addiction thing drugs/alcohol culture.

Pretty sure those who are homeless because of financial misfortune are there just temporarily.

Not specifically the jail footage, but the footage shot in Aruba during the month or more Greta was there full time.

I agree, Carnut.  Those who are fallen on bad times, financially, are generally helped to get housing and jobs and back on their feet by the social agencies.  The long-term homeless have shelters they can go to for a night's sleep and a place to hang during the day, but I've been told they usually only avail themselves of this during times of extreme weather or illness as they don't like the rules in the shelters.  The ones who really don't want to be homeless and want to get off the streets have resources readily available to assist.

Well, if AHATA doesn't want media coverage, then I guess they're not the ones funding the Kalpoe legal team.  Even if a case is taken on contingency, there are fees and expenses that have to be covered by someone.

Mrs. Red, that's really expensive!  $1700 a month for rent?  What sort of job would allow them to rent this expensive housing?  Certainly not flipping burgers at McD's or cleaning hotel rooms.  It's a huge problem when the housing is not available and the jobs are low paying.

well there aren't many jobs, it's true.... and the jobs that are traditionally high paying aren't - most ppl commute the hour or so to Boston where there is pay enough... but if you can't afford a car... yes, it's a vicious circle

now I have also been in places where there is the more traditional homeless that have addiction problems and mental illnesses... and that is usually more previalient....

Tend to think that's a cost-of-living thing, in those places even McD's pays well compared to others.

That's what we have in Phoenix.  The weather is mild and from what I've read, the homeless come here from other cities to live on the streets.  The ones I've seen are very sad looking and do look like they are mentally ill or addicted.  Rather scary looking, but sad, nonetheless.  They usually talk to themselves, very loudly, and act strangely.  There is affordable housing here, and govt subsidized housing, too.

By some estimates something should have occured on Friday, so something ought to break this next week most likely.

I think the holidays extended that 30 day provision.

We're rapidly losing our middle class in the US.  It used to be that a man could make an honest living and support his family, buy his home, clothe his kids on a wage from a blue collar job.  The factories were the backbone of the middle class.  As the factories are now being closed and the economy is moving to an information society, we are seeing so many of the middle class caught in the middle.  I feel sorry for them as they are afraid to change, but change is the only way they can make a living.

Just adding my 2 cents in on the homelesness.  Sorry if I missed somebody else mention it. But I know one problem, is homeless person can't get a job without an address and obviously can't get a home without a job here, so that adds another vicious cycle.  It's a catch 22.

Carnut, I see many, many people who are trying to make a living doing the work their fathers did--construction, mostly, and other similar jobs.  They can't make a living to support their families any more.  They claim it's because of the illegals taking their jobs for lower pay, but there is much more involved than just that.  The world has changed around them and they seem almost bewildered by it.  So many of them are trying to keep up with the old jobs, but they just get farther and farther behind.  It's not the same world it was 30 years ago.

Sorry, I don't buy that one either.

I totally agree with you.  I'm in the IT field and my husband is blue collar.  He was layed off and out of work for awhile, he worked his butt off.  We slowly got so far behind and almost lost everything.  That was almost a year ago.  We both now make decent money, kids are grown, except for 19 yr at home and in school and we still are worse off than 3 -5 yrs. ago...    I have barely a penny to spend and can't offer my 19 yr old as much ast my 23 yr old.  Do you know how guilty we feel?

I'm not sure what you mean about the FBI not being able to testify in a civil case.  If the FBI agents who were in Aruba were subpoenaed to testify as to what they observed, I would think they would have to testify.

Middle Class has become a misnomer these days and it is becoming more a two class have and have-not society.  Blue collar/tradesmen workers now get paid more than all but the top execs.  Ordinary family man has to struggle to keep things going and housing prices have skyrocketed so putting home ownership out of most young couples range.

Yes, our standard of living has changed.  Cars, computers, and electronic gadgets have become part of our lifestyles now.  However, it's all relative.   I know the blue collar worker could make a living and provide his family a comfortable standard of living 30 years ago.  Life has changed now.  It seems that a high school education is not going to provide the lifestyle that middle America wants anymore.  Not everyone can go to college, but we need to provide more training and skills-based education for the new technology based society we are building.  There are jobs there--but you can't get them without the training.  It's a time of transition, and it's tough to tell a 40 year old blue collar worker that he needs to retrain and change his life work.  However, that's the way it is.

Anyone who can assist or payfor a childs college education is doing very well in my book.

It's pretty sad they are just now trying to pass a minimum wage to $7.15hr after 10 yrs.  I know MY med. insurance alone has quadrupled in that amount of time, let alone gas, utilites, food etc....  How is somebody supposed to live on $5.75 hr?

Yes, but when we were kids, College degrees weren't as necessary.  I was proud to recieve my associate degree back then.  Now you almost have a BA or MBA to get a decent job.  I can't afford college for both my kids...  I just got my BA, because I was told after 17 yrs on the same job, I was going nowhere until I got it.

You can't live on $5.75 an hour or even $7.15 an hour.  Those are supposed to be entry level jobs.  Unfortunately, people don't move past those jobs.

and today people working at gas stations are making 6.00 bucks per hour

gasoline was 70-90 cents a gallon

a small ice cream cone was 27 cents including tax

and a sunday was 55 cents  8)

Lessee, for the last 5yrs I've been living comfortably on my $1250/mo retirement.

Only in the last year has my website income become enough to make life a bit more enjoyable for me.

My in-laws live quite comfortably on their social security and a bit of a savings account, not much more than your $1250/month.  But, their house payment is $250/month, car is paid for, and expenses are fixed.  They save enough every few months to make the trip to Laughlin to gamble with friends and go out for lunch once a week or so.  We help with luxuries for Christmas, birthdays, Mother's Day, etc.  They have medicare for medical care.  Their life is actually very good.  However, they are in their 70's.  I'm not talking about them.  I'm talking about 30-40 something's who are raising families and trying to make ends meet.

You are right there.  We, as a country, are richer and have more opportunities than we've ever had.  I just feel for the people caught in the middle in a changing world who don't know how to change.  That's all.  They will have to change--that's the way of it.  Or they will be forever behind and wondering what happened.  We're really the most fortunate people in the world.

Carnut, I am speaking out of my own personal experience, as I know you are too.  I do believe the gap is growing between the classes, because I am the Middle class who is really struggling at this time in my life.  I do see the lower classes in a catch 22 for the most part and the rich are getting richer.   But you are right,  we live an land of opportunity and I really don't have a right to complain.  I have a roof over my head, a good job, car,  clothes on my back,  etc.  It's just hard when 3 - 8 yrs. ago we were doing so much better than now and I'm only in my 40's.   We hit some rough times, so I know there are others' that have too.  Please don't think I am attacking you.  I agree for the most part with you, but not on some is all....

AzLady, you probably know this better than most.  A high school education 40 years ago was more like a master's degree now if you attended a really good high school.  My children could not believe the text books that we used in the 50s and early 60s.  Teachers nowadays are no more than babysitters for the nanny-state government we have created, parents who do not want to raise their children, send them to public school and want the teachers to deal with everything but educating them.  This problem began with the baby boomers coming of age.  They wanted it all and many of them have it, but the ones who were sent out to rally and cry for them, were left behind as are their children, who now expect the government to care for them, and these who live off the government are now the middle class and the former middle class is non-existent, living in poverty or have moved up to the higher rungs of the socioeconomic ladder.

Yep, that plumber guy charged me $4800 to find the drain for my bathtub.  It took him about 6 hours.  I wish I was a plumber.  One of my kids says when he retires from education (and he is in an administrator capacity), that he is going into plumbing.

What I can remark is that when we drove home the "Snack Truck" at "Fermins Bar" wasn't there.
In the car I had told Deepak that I left my shoes at the Marriot Hotel. Deepak told me not to worry that he would go back the next day and pick them up for me.

Thanks!!!  How has everyone been?  I am going to try and be here earlier tomorrow to say hey to everyone.  Things have been crazy for me since the beginning of December.  Small car accident, kids to the doctor the holidays, etc, etc, etc.  Hopefully my life will settle down a bit and I can visit you guys once again.

Thanks to us supporting those illegals for years and the housing market now out of reach..... The average price of a home must be somewhere along the lines of $350,000 up. Now what is the income one would have to have to afford a home of that price???... you know along with heat, food etc.. what income coming in? Is this still in the middlle class range?

Many in the US are just 2-3 paychecks from being homeless. The largest rise in homeless until recently was from moms with children.. now it's elderly women. This is scarey. It takes only one trauma or two very close together.. a divorce, a disaster to go from middle class to lower income class.

When I went home to the Midwest, I saw a strong middle class still, but this was  4 1/2 yrs ago and the outsourcing and incoming illegals to the area were just starting. I give your middle class about 5 years more!

What starts, for better and worse, in Calif. usually takes about 5 years to get to the Middle West... but this middle class thing is going toward you guys faster.

Outsourcing jobs, and incoming without jobs are a drain on the system. All of a sudden you can't get into the ER or your house taxes are going up fast for education, medical, food for those not add incoming money to the system and to Social Security, but because of necessity and survival send the money back to family in Mexico.  Oh, yes many of us immigrants (recent or generations ago) have formed a very strong "middle class" in the US, but just what is the income of a single or couple to be considered "middle class" now?

I live in a smaller city surrounded by LA. and it is considered a more "middle class, midwestern city" when compared to LA or the very liberal Santa Monica or the nearby rich city of Beverly Hills near which I used to live next to in LA before some disasters.

In one program, with the city where I now live, describes "lower income single" as under $32,000 and another program it makes the limit $46,0000 for low income single to apply for a certain program.

I know I live in a lower income "plot o land" described by the city with in a larger complex composing of other "plots". They like the plots where I live for it helps the city to still get all those Federal and State monies... you know, a city has to have a % of the areas described as "low income"

When they build apartments and subdivisions here in the city, a certain % has to be "low income" to get a permit from the city to build.

The Redeveopmnent Agency, (same members are the City Council), is wanting to build 100+ apartments and a a greater percent will be "lower income". They already have a list over 2 thousand and a former city official (unofficially)  said my name wasn't in the right language  (now those reading this can read between the lines on what I am saying) so no use to applying (I won't want to live in an apartment anyway, though.I have pets and tomatoes.:roll: )

 I don't know what is considered "middle class" in the MIdwest... but it's sure an eye opener to me to have a single with the limit of $46,000 be considered "low income". I was about ready to tell the clerk to "H*(& , give me the $46,000 instead of the program they were talking about. The difference between my retirement and that amount for a year and I could redo a few rooms according to DIY network.

To me, if these money limits describe "low income" in a certain city in CA, you have to ask your self... what is middle class??? and where is it still?

Some in some states in the midwest and east used to laugh at our problems here of illegals and gans and now these same states, cities are getting them. Watch out and watch your middle class go within the next few short years.

We have a home owners assoc. fee every month that is called "rent" for we individually own our homes but not the land. The land is owned by our homeower's assoc. "Rent" was raised $25 a month starting this month. That amount doesn't seem to be a large raise; I can survive, but I know at least two elderly ladies in this complex who will have to shorten food to made it. Their pride will not let them complain or tell anyone... but dear friends know!

They are considered "lower low income" so I am guessing if "low income" for a single in is $31,000 or $46,000, depending, then "lower income" might be around $22,000 and much less.

Just wait unitl all these goodies arrive in the city near those who are making $30-40,000 (single person) a year and think they are middle class.

In Indiana with that income I could buy a home... I used to have one there... a 1925 Craftsman with a 1/2 acre. There person who bought it earned about $34,000 and the home was about $80,000. The same type of home here (wthout the land, but with gangs, earthquakes and weather) would be $600,000. IMO this price is out of range for middle class, but lately I don't even know what is middle class or where it is... I have been told I am "lower income" and I am still shocked, but found one really great tomoto last night in the cold... would win a prize at the State Fair... so I am a happy camper!! :roll: Have some health, great pets and Monkey friends and mugs.
