Police in the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale say a member of a popular Des Moines band was found dead today in a local hotel. A news release from Urbandale police says they were called to the hotel in Urbandale just before 11 A.M. on the report that hotel employees had found a guest dead in one of the rooms.

Officers identified the dead man as 38-year-old Paul Gray of Johnston. Gray is the bass guitarist for the heavy-metal band Slipknot. Police say there was no evidence of foul play, and the Polk County medical examiner will conduct and autopsy Tuesday.

Police say toxicology tests will also be performed on Gray’s body to determine in there were any contributing factors to his death.

Slipknot 911 -- 'Hypodermic Needle Next to His Bed'

Originally posted 19 minutes ago by TMZ Staff

The hotel employee who discovered the body of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray on Monday told the 911 operator he noticed a hypodermic needle and a bottle of pills in the musician's hotel room when he found the body.

In the 911 call, obtained by TMZ, the employee -- a maintenance worker at the Iowa hotel -- tells the operator that he suspects Paul died of a "drug overdose" and that it appeared that Paul had been in the room for "a while."

The employee also told the 911 operator that Paul's mother had called the hotel earlier in the day because she couldn't get a hold of her son.

Cops are still investigating Paul's death. Officials have stated that the death doesn't appear to be the result of foul play.

Slipknot bassist died of morphine overdose
51 minutes ago

DES MOINES, Iowa — Autopsy results show the bassist for heavy metal band Slipknot died of an accidental overdose of morphine and fentanyl, a synthetic morphine substitute, police said Monday.

Paul Gray was found dead in a suburban Des Moines hotel room on May 25. A hotel worker told a 911 dispatcher that a hypodermic needle was found near Gray's body and that pills also were found in the room.

The autopsy shows he died of an overdose, Urbandale police said in a news release. They also said the autospy revealed signs of significant heart disease.

No evidence has been found showing Gray had a prescription for the drugs, police spokesman Sgt. Dave Disney said. Police are trying to find out how Gray got them.

"There is no evidence that a doctor prescribed either one of those substances," Disney said.

Disney said charges are possible but that it is too early to discuss specifically what those charges could be.

A person answering the phone at Slipknot's record company, New York-based Roadrunner Records, declined to comment and said that there would be no official comment from the company or band until one is posted on the band's website. No such statement was posted on Slipknot's website as of late Monday afternoon.

Phone listings for his wife, Brenna Gray, and Corey Taylor, a founding member of the band, were not immediately found.

Gray was a co-founder of the Des Moines-based band known for its groteque masks, thrashing sounds and aggressive, dark lyrics.

Slipknot emerged in the mid-1990s and it's 1999 debut album sold about 2 million copies. The ban won a Grammy in 2006 for best metal performance for the song "Before I Forget."

Slipknot Book First Live Gig Since Paul Gray’s Death
Posted on December 3, 2010 by Chris Harris

Yessir. There’s been a lot of talk the last few days about Slipknot, and whether or not they’re already working on new songs. Drummer Joey Jordison says they are, but singer Corey Taylor says, “f*** that.” But Taylor did mention the other day that live shows might be in the ‘Knot’s immediate future, so I guess he was referring to this.

Slipknot will perform next summer at the Sonisphere series of European festivals, including an exclusive U.K. performance at Knebworth. Sonisphere is scheduled for July 8 through July 10, 2011.

“We’re looking forward to spending our summer in Europe,” the band says in a statement. “This tour is about us and our fans. It’s about celebrating the life of our brother, [late Slipknot bassist] Paul [Gray], and his legacy. The door is neither open nor closed. This tour is about burning down that door. See you this summer.”

Of course, Paul Gray’s body was found in a hotel room in Iowa last May. Gray, who was 38, died of an accidental morphine overdose.
