Title: Lunch Date in Atlanta
Post by: msmarple on February 24, 2007, 01:45:02 PM
SunFreak, Peaches and msmarple are planning to meet for lunch, in Atlanta, soon - e.g., March 3 or 10 2007.

BTgirl, Metro, Shadow are among possible joinees (?), as well as Peaches' DH.

I'm thinking maybe BT has an email addy she can post, that we can use?

We will NOT post the LOCATION of our meeting. However, I am scoping out places very near I-85 (easy on/off) and suggestions are welcome.

Those who would like to join us please post here. We'll get an email up and running ASAP.

Stay tuned.

Meant to say, either date is fine with me (3rd or 10th). The 10th might be better in terms of time to "publicize" - but we don't want to miss Metro!

I also meant to add that my hubby would like to attend as well if it's on March 10. He's already tied up with something else on March 3. However, as Ms. Marple says, we don't want to miss Metro, so I think we should choose whichever date will work for him.

BT - Thanks for letting us use that email addy. That's important to have, since we will NOT post the location.

BUT we CAN discuss the date on the thread. Looks like we need to hear from Metro re. his schedule.

Another DH!

Ms Marple,

I just e-mailed Metro and asked him which date would work best for him. Hopefully, he'll get my mail and respond.  :D

I trust all of you but I am a firm believer in better to be safe than sorry.

Hi San & Justins - Sure y'all don't want to fly into town for lunch?   You know Atlanta IS easy to fly to ...

As for photos - I eschew cameras myself, but others can do as they wish.

That's great, glad you have his email addy. I'm sure he'll chime in sometime this weekend.

I'm going to drive around a couple of I-85 exits tomorrow, so I'll have some suggestions by tomorrow p.m. I have a place in mind but can't remember the name of it!

Hi everyone!

Sounds like it's going to be a fun shindig. Mind if I join? Either date is good for me also. My birthday is March 13th so we could celebrate that at the same time. Woot!  Partaaay!!!     LOL

I can print out and bring some Boycott Aruba-Justice For Natalee envelope label stickers for everyone to use. And I can also bring the booklets ""While You Were Sleeping...Chronicles of a GHB Trip". Think I have about 25 booklets I purchased at one time while I was sending out Boycott Aruba packages. I might even have a few Boycott Aruba magnetic bumper stickers left.

You can contact me at dkpen357@yahoo.com to send info, please.

God bless~

dk - lots of things to see here; aquarium certainly one of them and I haven't done that yet. (Baby panda at the zoo, too!) I'll try to get some information together and post it.

Please remember that I just live here, though - not a tour guide or travel agent! And I don't know how many will be interested in making a day of it.

Our LOCATION is very close to Lenox and Phipps shopping malls, Atlanta's premier shopping area. Some folks might want to do that.

Where ever we end up, I'm sure it will be fun and wonderful to meet you all. I am really excited about this. I don't know a lot about Atlanta and I'm not very good on directions so I will be printing out that information via map quest.

It doesn't matter to me where we meet as long as it's not a dive bar. lol
Where ever you all pick I will be there with bells on.

Here are some of Atlanta's attractions. But I think it would be hard to do justice to most of these (and get your money's worth) on a day you're doing lunch elsewhere!

Unless otherwise noted, all of these are, generally speaking, in and around the downtown area, and would be easy to get to from I-85.

Please call or email ahead and do your own research; all of this info is from web sites and might be out-dated.

Georgia Aquarium
You need to get tickets in advance; not sure of availability as this has been sold out on many days and Saturdays might be tough. They can email tickets to you.
10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Aquarium Home Page:

Zoo Atlanta
The baby panda will be making her debut on view as of Feb. 23. Timed tickets are available online; they are $5.00 more than the usual general admission zoo ticket (which is $18.00).
9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., but pandas only during morning hours
(9:45 - 11:45). You can get tickets online.

Atlanta, GA 30315

***

Turner Field
You can get to the dugout, luxury suites, broadcast booth etc. Tickets are $10.00. Green lot parking is free for tours (see other links for maps etc.) Be SURE to check ahead (some events cause cancellations of tours). This might be do-able before lunch.
10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Turner Field
755 Hank Aaron Drive
Atlanta, GA 30315

***
Fox Theatre tour
When I did this, they did the trick of "elapsing" a full day in 1 minute (sunrise to sunrise, complete with stars). $10.00 ticket ($5.00 for seniors). This might be do-able before lunch. This is a must-see in Atlanta and I LOVE to go there for movies, plays or concerts.
One-hour tour, 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays.

660 Peachtree Street NE
Atlanta GA 30308

Cyclorama - Circular depiction of the Battle of Atlanta, created 1885. $5.00 ($4.00 for seniors). Might be do-able by lunch.

***
Atlanta History Center
The elegant Swan House mansion, the Tully Smith farm house and vegetable garden, Victorian playhouse, museum, gardens. $15.00 ($12 for seniors). This is in Buckhead.
10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
http://www.atlhist.org/
130 West Paces Ferry Road
Atlanta GA 30305
404-814-4000

On another day, we might plan to have lunch at the Swan Coach House and tour the whole site. (We need to KNOW it isn't going to be too cold to be outside.) The Coach House is one of our favorite places for lunch.

***
Atlanta Botanical Gardens
This is another of my favorites; my family likes to go there for picture-taking. A huge conservatory with many orchids. The children's garden is terrific for all ages, too. $12.00 ($9.00 for seniors). This is in Midtown (adjacent to Piedmont Park).
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
http://www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org/home.do
1345 Piedmont Ave. NE
Atlanta GA 30309
404-876-5859

***
Oakland Cemetery
Okay, I'm weird, but I like tromping around old cemeteries. This is FREE! Bobby Jones and Margaret Mitchell are buried here. Best time to do this, though, is on a particular Sunday in October - they do a "birthday party" and open some of the mausoleums, have a "Victorian Hat" contest, scavenger hunt, story telling, Varsity hot dogs, etc.
Sunrise to Sundown.

And of course, there's shopping ... great malls.

I think the Birmingham Monkeys should climb out of the trees, and the Cats stop hunting for one day, and drive over to Atlanta.  It's not that far!!  Have driven to Talladega Race Track many times.  Birmingham is just a hop skip & a jump from there.

Next time we can do a lunch in Birmingham!

These two places below sounds like something I may do during my visit in Atlanta. If it were warm and Spring time I would hit the Botanical Gardens. A little early for me there yet.

Isn't there a new museum where they have human skeletons with tissue on them in poses or something like that? That would be interesting to see also. For those who could stomach it. lol

My hubby may be coming with me also, if that is ok. We need to find a dog sitter while away from home first. If we can't find one I will be traveling alone.

We have an American Pitbull Terrier who has seperation anxiety worse than any dog or pet I have ever seen or heard of. She literally rips the doors off the hinges and walls, and digs her way through the sheetrock and insulation of the walls trying to get out. It is so bad her gums bleed and her foot pads bleed.  She will not stay in the back yard. She jumps the fense to go looking for us. Hubby won't tie or chain her up in fear she will strangle herself in an attempt to break free.  We bought a kennel, one like you use on the back of a pick-up truck. She pushed so hard on the walls of the cage she busted the bottom loose. She is a very strong dog. So we will be building a kennel made of a cyclone fense with reinforced locks and hinges/bolts/latches. She will "not" get out this one. Only thing I fear is she having an anxiety attack she will go into a stroke. She is about 7.5 yrs old. Crazy dog! We have established who the leader of the pack is, but it just has not helped. Last time we put her in a kennel, when we returned, she had freaked out so bad she didn't even recognize us for the first 30 mins. until she snapped out of it hearing our voices calmly speaking to her. Bless her heart. Even putting her on meds has not helped. So, unless we find a dog sitter, hubby is stuck home for the weekend. hmmm Might not be a bad idea after all.  LMAO Just kidding!

dk - You might be thinking of "Body Worlds" but unfortunately it is not presently in, or scheduled for, Atlanta. I see Charlotte on the schedule though. (Apparently it's a traveling exhibit.) I remember reading about this a while back; maybe it will eventually get here!

http://www.bodyworlds.com/index.html

I failed to mention these two attractions, but again, not sure you can do them justice in a short time:

***
Fernbank Science Center (with Planatarium) and Museum of Natural History
This is in Decatur, near Emory. Two separate sites but very near each other.

Museum of Natural History
$13.00 ($12 seniors).
http://www.fernbank.edu/
There is an IMAX theatre; currently showing: "Hurricane on the Bayou" and "Deep Sea". $11.00 ($10 seniors).
767 Clifton Road NE
Atlanta, GA 30307-1221
General Info: 404-929-6300 • Ticket Sales: 404-929-6400

Planatarium/Science Center
http://fsc.fernbank.edu/
There are Planatarium shows at 11:00 and 3:00 on Saturdays; they are $4.00 ($3.00 seniors). Other exhibits etc. are free. Among other things,  composting explained! (Tyler !!!)

There will be a LUNAR ECLIPSE on MARCH 3 !!!

"There will be a total eclipse of the Moon visible in Atlanta on the evening of Saturday, March 3, 2007, and astronomers at DeKalb County School System’s Fernbank Science Center are inviting everyone to come and get the best view through the observatory telescope.

"Fernbank Science Center’s observatory will be open for this event (weather permitting) from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.  The public is invited to observe along with Fernbank astronomers and volunteers.  When there is a celestial event, such as this Moon eclipse, Fernbank is a very popular place.

"There is no charge for admission to Fernbank Science Center, and free but limited parking is available."

156 Heaton Park Drive, N.E.
Atlanta, Georgia 30307

***

High Museum of Art
This is in Midtown, on Peachtree Street between 15th and 16th Streets; good access from I-85. The current special exhibit features items on loan from The Louvre.
$15.00 ($12 for seniors).

Okay Monkeys, Ms. Marple and I are getting serious about lunch details now. Please e-mail me at sockmonkey_mom@yahoo.com if you're planning to attend.

We're thinking we might need to make reservations somewhere, so we need to know firm numbers. That means that if you're planning to bring a Significant Other with you, we need to know that too for the count.

Thanks!  :D

Well heck, I am flying into Atlanta on the 5th to see my daughter and leaving the 10th.  I guess I will just miss you all.  Maybe next time.

We local monkeys can still meet you in Atlanta.  I know I would love to.  Which sector of Atlanta is your daughter? NE, NW, SE, SW inside the perimeter or outside the perimeter?

I'm open any night you choose. I don't work so I'm open in the daytime too.  Maybe Sat or Sun morning for a breakfast somewhere so the others who work could join us?

BTgirl has my email address. I have free long distance telephone so I could call and we could set something up if you would like.

My daughter lives in Buford.  I'm actually going to be doing some babysitting, so it's really hard to say if I can get away unless it's fairly close to her house.

Understand, and I would be willing to head that way.

SunFreak probably would too.

But don't know how tied up you will be with baby squatting!

dk - You might be thinking of "Body Worlds" but unfortunately it is not presently in, or scheduled for, Atlanta.

High Museum of Art
This is in Midtown, on Peachtree Street between 15th and 16th Streets; good access from I-85. The current special exhibit features items on loan from The Louvre.

My husband and mother visited our daughter before the Holidays last year and they all went to this place I was speaking of.
It is actual human skeletons with tisue on them. They have them in poses and such. Non of them are fake. I will have to ask my husband once again the name of this place.

dk - Hummm; I spoke too soon I guess. (Although the Body Worlds thing DOES use real human bodies that have been donated.) Anyway, if you can find out what it's called, I'll check it out.

I spoke to my daughter about it a moment ago on the phone but her cell phone was breaking up and I couldn't make out the name of it. She said it was in Atlanta Ga last year but at the moment it is in France. It is a traveling show of sorts. I

My hubby has a prochure he got from it on their tour there. I will ask him where he put it to get the name of it. But at any rate, you are right, it's no longer in Atlanta Ga so that is out on the "to do" list.

My daughter just got back home late last night from a trip to Mexico City, Mexico. She has a lot of pictures to get developed to show me. She visited the Astec's while there. I can't wait to see those pictures.
My daughter has been blessed the last 3 years. She has traveled all over the world. Mostly Europe. She says she wants to go to the orients next. I'm sure she will if I know my girl.

Okay, Lunch Monkeys - we have settled on a location. If you have indicated to me that you are planning to attend, you should have received an e-mail from me today regarding where we'll be meeting. If you didn't, and you are planning to be there, please e-mail me at sockmonkey_mom@yahoo.com

We will need a definite head count as soon as possible so that we can make sure we get a table big enough to seat our group.

Thanks.  :D

Bleached - My guy is on a cruise of Greek islands; I desperately need a hair cut! Reminds me of when I called my plumber and he was in Las Vegas for a week.

I am in the wrong line of work    .

Hi everyone!

Made it back home a few hours ago, unpacked, and relaxed. Ready for bed now.

It was great meeting all of you Super Monkeys. Both hubby and I enjoyed ourselves and enjoyed the good company. I look forward to the next Monkey Lunchin'. Hopfully we can get the Alabama Monkey's to join or we all meet up there.

The table was decorated so cute and the food was excelent. More than I could eat in one sitting. One plate was enough to feed an army. For those who were there understands what I am saying. LOL

Hubby says all the Monkey ladies were great. He was surprised actually. He thought he was going to be bored. I nudged him and said, "told you babe, they are all a bunch of really good hearted and sweet people". He just smiled and agreed.  Hubby and Peaches hubby(Mr. Peaches) talked up a storm. hehehe

Thanks for sharing a little bit of you with us all. <big hugs>

God bless~
