Talking To Beth Holloway Five Years After Natalee's Disappearance

Mountain Brook, AL - It was a story that made headlines across the globe. The search for missing Mountain Brook teenager Natalee Holloway. The story that dominated the airwaves- also took over Beth Holloway's life. She is Natalee's mother, and five years later, she is still looking for answers and hoping Aruban prosecutors can close this case.
 
"I'm not sure if there is anything new, but they are processing all the leads and the tips that they have received."
 
Natalee is now presumed dead, but no one knows how she died or why.
 
"We've really tried to be so careful and not to speculate as to what happened an just stick with the known facts."
 
We do know that Natalee was last seen alive with Dutch teen Joran van der Sloot at Carlos n' Charlie's. Over the years, van der Sloot has told many stories of what happened that night. All the while Beth listened to each of these tales hoping to find a thread of truth.
 
"I think there was one where he said he sold her alive.I think there was another where he said she fell of a balcony in a swamp. I think now it's become so muddy for me that no my journey for justice is not ended."
 
It's been five years since Natalee disappeared. Legally, her family could now file for a death certificate in Alabama, but they have not thus far since Natalee disappeared abroad.
 
"We know that Natalee is no longer alive. I know we had talked about that earlier, few years ago,but it is not something that we have done yet."
 
Over the years, Beth and her family have learned how to deal with the pain of losing Natalee, but it is still an open wound. In March, a Pennsylvania couple thought they may have taken a picture of a body- maybe Natalee's body- on the ocean floor. News like that- always makes the family hopeful.
 
"You know I got caught up for a just- you get taken in. But as I said, there is a quicker recovery time where I am able to compartmentalize it and focus on what I can do..."

She is now focused on her new life's work which was born out of the death of her daughter.
 
"Tragedy creates an opportunity to make a difference."

Making A Difference
 
Beth Holloway thought she knew exactly who she was more than five years ago.
 
"My life was defined with two children, a marriage, job and home. When a tragedy strikes, you lose everything."

During the Memorial Day weekend of 2005, Beth's life changed forever. With Natalee missing, she was now the mother of one- not two. She would later divorce her then husband Jug Twitty. So she was no longer a wife. Her life "definition" changed- and with it so did her life's purpose.
 
"I received the call that all mothers and fathers dread from the moment their children is born- that my daughter was missing."

So now her mission is to help others. Beth tells the story of Natalee's disappearance to high school and college students round the nation as part of her work with the Natalee Holloway Resource Center,which launches in D.C. on June 8.
 
"The Natalee Holloway Resource Center is focusing on education and crime prevention, and in the event that a loved one goes missing we have the resources and the contacts to assist the families."
 
Beth says she had no idea who to contact in Aruba when Natalee went missing. She also knew nothing about the Dutch system of Justice or who was in charge. Out of her frustration a new global security and assistance company was born. It's called Mayday 360.
 
"When I present to these high school and college students, I could give them the personal safety and travel safety message, but I really felt like I couldn't equip them with a real tangible resource. And I feel with Mayday 360, I can because that is real time, real security assistance, 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
 
She says her definition of herself continues to evolve, but everything she does now can be traced back five years to Aruba- the place where paradise met tragedy. The place that gave birth to her new life's work and hope that..
 
"No one will ever experience what I did heading home from a family vacation on Memorial Day."

I'd just as soon have Kibbles and Bits . . . wait, I don't think that is Purina.  Thank you for making my post clearer.  I just hope folks complain!  I may register to win and if I should, refuse the prize.  Never having won anything in my life, maybe it would be my turn.

    There is a show, I believe on TLC called Four Weddings.  Basically a contest between brides, as to who has the best affair.  Several times the prize, which is a honeymoon trip, has been to Aruba.  Not sure who the contact person would be but I was shocked to hear that someone thought this was a great spot for a honeymoon.

My daughter's friend who is a dental assistant claims that an X-ray technologist should know the difference between a wisdom tooth and a molar.

In the excitment of the moment it is certainly understandable was it did not happen but ... I sure wish those tourists had thought to take a picture of the find.

Local Man Finds Jawbone On Aruban Beach
Authorities Investigate Whether Bone Belongs To Natalee Holloway

LEBANON, Conn. -- Investigators are expected to reveal whether a jawbone found in Aruba belongs to Natalee Holloway, who disappeared without a trace in 2005. But, details are emerging on how that bone was found on the beach by a man from Lebanon on a trip with his friends.

Both of the couples said that if the bone does belong to Holloway, they just want her family to know that they treated the discovery with dignity and have been going through a range of emotions ever since they found it.

The friends from Andover and Lebanon flew to Aruba earlier this month to celebrate their wedding anniversaries together.

They said the bone was found on the last day of their trip.

"It was out last day at The Phoenix," said David Knox, of Andover. "We decided to relax and enjoy the beach."

So the couples, celebrating their 35th wedding anniversaries at the resort, took a swim.

However, while Gil Beaulieu's wife and friends sat in the sun, he strolled the beach.

"Gil was trying to find that perfect shell," Knox said.

Beaulieu said, "I noticed there wasn't a lot of people in that area, so I thought maybe I could find some shells."

Beaulieu, from Lebanon, said he noticed a really shiny one that caught his eye.

"I picked up the shell first," he said. "Then I saw the bone. I hesitated because I kind of knew what it was right off the bat."

He said he brought it to his wife, an X-ray technologist who looks at bones every day.

"You do hesitate, because you're not expecting to find a human bone," said Eileen Beaulieu.

"All the teeth were missing except for one molar in the back," Gil Beaulieu said. "It was in good shape."

Such good shape that they could even see a tiny hole in the tooth.

By now, Kathy Knox said she had Natalee Holloway in her head.

"That was basically what I was thinking about," she said. "Is it Natalee?"

They said they put the jaw bone in a plastic cup and then Beaulieu and Knox brought it to the hotel lobby where security took it.

After dinner, a note in their hotel door requested they call police right away.

That's when it was real," Knox said.

Authorities are now analyzing the bone to see if it belongs to Holloway.

And if it is, Eileen Beaulieu said she want's Halloway's mother to know they took care of it respectfully.

"I'd want her to know that we took care of it. We treated it with dignity," Beaulieu said.

"I began to think of the family," said Kathy Knox. "You know, if this is Natalee maybe the family can have some closure."

And if not, at least, perhaps answers for someone.

Fighting back tears, Kathy Knox said, "I don't even know the family, but if my child was missing I can't even imagine being as strong as she has been."

"We all hope very much that this puts an end to somebody's heartache," Gil Beaulieu said.

The determination was made using Holloway's dental records, according to a statement issued late this morning by the Aruba Public Prosecutor's Office.

Aruban Solicitor General Taco Stein said shortly after the announcement that they could determine quickly that the bone wasn't Holloway's -- the jawbone found on the beach had a wisdom tooth still attached and Holloway's dental records showed the teen had had her wisdom teeth removed.

We could kick ourselves for not taking a photo of the jaw bone.  It was found at that edge of the water where waves could have brought it up on shore, near where a jetty of rocks go out to protect the beach area.

The bone that we found at the Phoenix is exactly what they are describing of the lower Jaw Bone with one intact molar.  If you touch the center of your chin and measure to where it would meet the upper jaw... about 5(ish) inches.  It still had a molar and looked VERY human.  That's the bone that we found at the Phoenis.  We turned it in and my husband and friend were interviewed for statements that same evening. (hope this helps)

Snoopy, I hope they get lots of e-mails.  There are other wonderul places to take a trip i.e. Alaska or Hawaii.  I don't get it . . . why must we always leave the country to have a magnificent trip (though I like traveling abroad as well).  But I think these companies need to think of the US first.  Now a trip to Key West . . . sigh!

Good Morning All! I was watching Regis & Kelly weeks ago & they had a trip to Aruba on their prize wheel. One morning someone actually won that trip & the excitement that person had when answering their phone to when they found out where the trip was was like night & day! From WooHoo  ::MonkeyDance:: to Gee I'm so excited  ::MonkeyEek:: i really think this person may have asked to swap their trip to somewhere else, they were not excited about Aruba at all. I thought at that time I should email them & tell them that Aruba sucks & people don't want to go there, but I never did. i don't know if that trip is still on their wheel or not, i don't watch it every day; but maybe we could email their show too, ya never know, they might remove it!

Page 182/183:  The day after our talk with Ms. Flanegan, I had to go to the police staton to turn in the statement that I had given to Dennis Jacobs.  He had given me a copy to go over with my attorney, Vinda.  But, after looking at it, I realized that it was only a page and a half long and had little to do with what we had actually discussed the most, the conversation that I had with Paulus van der Sloot at the prison ...  I had spent a long time with Jacobs, and much of my interview was not in the statement.

When I went back to turn it in and discuss it with him, I was told that Jacobs was in with Jan van der Stratten. ....

I commented to Jacobs about how short my statement was. He said that I could add anything I wanted to it. Also, I noticed that Eric Soemers's name was on it, but that detective was not even present during the interview. Now I wondered if Jacobs was making up everyone's statement and getting Eric to sign on to them. If that were the case, he could state anything he wanted, and it would look like an official statement made in front of a witness.

I find it really strange that the Purina Company (sells dog food) has teamed up with Aruba, offering a trip to those that buy Purina Dog Food a chance to win a trip to Aruba. I wonder what the pet owners that buy Purina Dog Food and win the trip will think when they come to Aruba and see the stray, starving dogs that are around the island?  Shouldn't Purina offer a trip somewhere dogs and other animals are well treated?  I wonder how the winners would feel if they see the legs of a donkey sticking out of a dumpster ( like one of the photos that were posted here at SM)  in Aruba while on the vacation they won?

At the request of the Aruban Public Prosecutor's Office the Netherlands Forensic Institute has conducted forensic anthropological and DNA investigations on bone material, a piece of jawbone with a tooth. These investigations were executed simultaneously. Detailed examination by the NFI excludes the possibility that the bone material found in Aruba is that of Natalee Holloway. Exclusion after comparing dental records It was, first, necessary to establish that the bone material was in fact human material. This is the case. Thus the forensic anthropological investigation was expanded to include an investigation by forensic odontologists. Using the dental records of Natalee Holloway, such as the location of wisdom teeth and fillings, a comparison was made with the jaw bone recovered on Aruba. Based on these comparisons it could be excluded that the investigated bone material and molar came from Natalee Holloway. DNA testing Along with the forensic anthropological and odontological research, the NFI initiated a forensic DNA investigation. However, only a very small amount of DNA material was present and that was also of low quality. The bone appeared to have been exposed to various (weather) influences and proved to be porous. DNA researchers at the NFI therefore have applied extensive and highly sophisticated techniques to the DNA present in the bone to be examined. On the basis of the comparison of the dental records the possibility that the bone material came from Natalee Holloway was excluded, therefore further DNA testing has been stopped. There is still a possibility that the molar from the jawbone could be used for further efforts to generate a DNA profile. However this follow-up study of said molar would inhibit future research into identifying the person from whom the bone originates. Given that, based on dental records, it can be ruled out that the bone fragment came from Natalee Holloway, the Office of the Public Prosecutor in Aruba has decided not yet to carry out further research on the material. The prosecution will decide what further action will be taken to identify the bone material. Page 77:   At what seems like one letter at a time, Jacobs types in Dutch what I say to him in English.  It's tedious.  Arduous. Downright painful.  It's a very, very, very slow process ... 

I explain finding the car she was seen getting into parked at the van der Sloot home.  I review the dramatic encounter in the van der Sloot front year in the wee hours of Tuesday morning during which Joran described his sexual activites with Natalee as she was falling asleep and walking up.  Falling asleep and waking up.  How he described her as drunk.

Describing the reencactment that followed at the Holiday Inn, I relate how Deepak Kalpoe and Joran van der Sloot specifically showed me exactly where they left Natalee.  I give the names and include elaborate detailed physical descriptions of all those present for this demonstration.  I tell how Joran and Deepak said she stumbled and bumped her head, how she refused help from them and went inside the lobby.

For two hour I talk.  He types.  Jug comes in to check on me.  A little while later Jodi comes in, then leaves again.  I am still talking, and the detective is still typing.  I've been here for a total of four hours when we finally finish with my statement.

At the conclusion, Jacobs calls in another detective, a young uniformed officer, and gives him some verbal directions in Papiamento.  The young officer turns to me and begins to read my statement back to me, from Dutch to English.  When he gets to the last word he looks at me and asks, "Are these your words?'  And I respond in the affirmative.  But I am not allowed a copy.


2. Minor Revisions

Page 88/89:  At the restaurant I order a meal, but only eat a bite or two.  The others have worked up an appetite, and the meal is a good time for everyone to regroup before the calls start coming in again tonight.  As dinner concludes, detective Jacobs appears at our table.  He’s holding official documents.  Surprised to see him here at ten o’oclock at night, we invite him to sit down, hoping he has some pertinent information about Natalee.  The detective says he just wants me to sign a new statement.

Jug immediately asks him, “What’s the difference between this one and one she gave you this morning?’

Jacobs says that some dates were wrong and have been corrected, and he needs my signature on the new corrected copy.

The document is in Dutch, which is Greek to me.  I have no idea what it says.  I can’t tell if it’s different from the one the young officer read to me this morning, which I signed, or not.  But all I have to rely on is the Aruban police process, so I gladly submit to his request and sign every single page.  Desperate, I will do anything they ask.  Maybe I can get a copy of this one.  I’ll worry about having it translated later.  For now, I will trust.


3.  Not my Words!!

Pages 187/189: After waiting months to find out what my statement actually says, Jug calls on my first day in California. He has finally been able to obtain the translation of my statement from prosecutor Janssen. The one the detective brought to me to sign late that night in the restaurant. And I trusted him, and signed every page.

“listen to this, Beth …” The words he reads echo in my head. I begin to sink, and could slide to the ground out of my chair. “Jug, they changed it. They changed my statement.”

I had carefully given intricate details about the encounter in the van der Sloot front yard the first night we got to the island, including names and physical descriptions. Now Paulus van der Sloot is described only as “the man with the glasses.”

Those are not my words.

Earlier we learned from the prosecutor that the statements from the two uniformed officers who were with us in the van der Sloot front yard that morning didn’t mention the sexual encounters described by Joran between Natalee and him. No mention of his sexual contact with her as she was falling asleep and walking up. No mention of his description of her underwear and genitalia. So the judge never heard about all that.

There‘s no way a police officer could stand there that morning, hear what Joran was saying, and fail to include these details in a statement. No way. In my opinion this information must have been deleted for the officers.

I believe that both Dave and Beth's respective books provide great foundational knowledge to build on encompassing the Aruban cover up agenda in the Natalee Holloway case.

My son purchased online five copies of each book at a very reasonable cost.  I am sending one set out to American friends as a Christmas present ... friends  who used our home as a base during the Winter Olympics.

Details encompassing the Natalee Holloway case had become a faded memory but when our friend made the statement ... "CRIME HAPPENS EVERYWHERE" ... my hubby gave me "the look" that implied it was best that I end the discussion.

ORANGE CITY - Two officials working in the Netherlands for the department of tourism agency ATA must return to Aruba in April. That makes Tourism Minister Otmar Oduber (AVP) is known.

One of the two officials Oduber Charles, brother of former Prime Minister Nelson Oduber. Together with the other officer, he was recalled last year to Aruba because they would not perform. Then they exerted a lawsuit, which by Tourism Minister Oduber won.

According to the law governing the rights and obligations of civil servants is regulated (LMA), the government officials ployer bring it back. The two officers who Aruba House in The Hague professionals should return next April.

Moreover, they must re-apply because ATA tourist office is privatized and merged with Aruba Cruise Tourism (ACT) to the new ATA Sui Generis'. As this newspaper reported earlier, all officials and ATA ACT re-apply for a position in the new organization. Whoever is not adopted, will still have a year to an equal value function within the government to find. Failing that, there is a transitional arrangement whereby the officer three years while maintaining most of his salary can look for a job outside the government.

London family shattered by death of Tom Norman in Aruba

ONTARIO - Tom Norman's identical twin brother Tim won't see the young boys yet.

He looks so much like Tom, the boys might get confused if he walks through the doors and into their house. Is daddy home? they might wonder. The twin brother can't take that risk, because daddy's not coming home. Ever.

Daddy -- Tom Norman -- was killed by a drunk driver in Aruba on April 16.

As his closeknit family, horribly injured wife Christine, and his many London friends mourn his loss, they are doing all they can to protect his sons. Cole, 6, understands what happened a bit. Trent, 4, a little less. Reed, 2, saw a photograph of his dad and his dad's twin brother the other day and said. "Two daddies."

So the twin brother, Tim Norman, stays away.

"He is a little bit worried about seeing them the first time," sister Kelley Norman says. "He doesn't want to confuse them. We're just not sure." Unsure as well of the boys' financial future, the family has just set up a trust fund for them.

Tom Norman was a test pilot at Diamond Aircraft and could get only minimal insurance because he was in a high-risk career, Kelley said. His wife Christine was working part-time and going to Fanshawe College before the crash that took her husband's life and smashed her legs and pelvis.

"She is pretty shattered," Kelley said. "She is in emotional and physical pain." Kelley is one of five Norman siblings with deep roots in London. She and her sisters, Tracy and Kristie, came first. Then came the twin boys, Tom and Tim.

"They were fabulous. They were terrible," Kelley recalls with a laugh. "Mom had a repeater plan at the hospital. They were there so often getting stitches or something."

The boys did everything with each other and to each other. They tried to put each other in the dryer and set it on spin. They proudly came into the family home on Lynngate Place one day and announced to their mother, "We finally broke every window in the garage."

An adventurous boy, Tom became a pilot as an adult. Along the way, he met Christine, a waiter at the bar his father owned across the road from Fanshawe College, Carey's Pub. His twin, Tim, met his wife, Stephanie, also a waiter at the pub.

Tom got a job at Diamond Aircraft, where as flightline supervisor he tested aircraft and did orientation flights for customers. About two years ago, Tom surprised Christine with a cruise vacation. But the couple learned she was pregnant with their third child, and delayed their plans.

This spring, they boarded the Caribbean Princess for their first vacation together.

Tom was like a little kid, Christine told the family after the crash. "He was so excited,' Kelley said. "He was roaming all over the ship, saying 'This is the life. This is the life.' They were just having a ball."

Four days into the cruise, the ship stopped in Aruba and the couple rented an ATV.

"They didn't even get out of the parking lot," Kelley said. A pickup truck hit them head on. Tom was killed instantly and Christine was thrown over the front of the truck. Aruba news reports state the driver of the truck was drunk and there were drugs in the truck. But the news reports also got Tom's name wrong, and the family is still waiting for the definitive word from Aruba police.

There is no mistaking, however, the impact of the crash.

"Christine is not doing well," Kelley said yesterday. The boys are afraid to visit the hospital and see their mother so injured. She had to lie helpless while others arranged for her husband's body to come home.

"Christine is devastated because Tom had so many plans for the boys," Kelley said. He had already taken them camping and started them skating. This weekend, the older two boys will start soccer. Tom had registered them before he left for the cruise.

"Anyone who ever knew Tom is devastated for these little boys," Kelley said.

"He will never walk back through the door and take them in his arms."

Details of the Tragedy

On April 16th, Tom and Christine Norman were vacationing in Aruba . They had just rented an ATV and before they had even left the parking lot, a truck driven by a drunk driver rounded the corner and hit them head on. Tom was killed instantly and Chris suffered serious injuries including a fractured hip and crushed pelvis.

Christine was airlifted back to Ontario where she has undergone extensive reconstruction surgery. She will be hospitalized for another few months and will require a hip replacement sometime in the future. It is not certain when Christine will be able to care for the boys on her own.

The truck driver was arrested but as it was a vehicle accident in a foreign country, the Canadian government will not get involved.

Tom was the supervisor of flightline and test flights at Diamond Aircraft in London ON . Because of Tom's career, he could not obtain life insurance. Christine worked part-time as an interior decorator.

The Norman family live in St. Thomas , but Tom and Christine (nee Payne) are well known in the Sault and St. Joseph 's Island where Christine and her brother Kalin Payne were raised. Christine 's mother Justine Howes and her father John Payne continue to live in the area.

Mike and Justine Howes (aka Nanny and Bubba) of Pte. Louise in the Sault were in St. Thomas babysitting their 3 precious grandsons when they received the news of the tragic accident and Tom's death. Currently the boys are being cared for by members from Chris and Tom's extended families in their own St. Thomas home.

In April 2010, Tom Norman was killed in an accident while vacationing in Aruba. His wife Christine was badly injured in the same accident. The motorcycling community in St Thomas/London got together to raise funds to assist Christine and her boys (Cole, Trent & Reed).

All in all, we were able to collect about $3,000 to help out the family.

Tom and Christine Norman had been married about 6 years when Tom surprised his wife with a cruise vacation - their first ever since they had met about 10 years previously.  Unfortunately but happily, their vacation was to be postponed another 2 years when Chris found out that they were expecting their 3rd child, Reed.
 
Tom was like an excited kid; running around the ship, marveling at the extensive buffets and all the activities, and just spending some well deserved time with his lovely wife.  They dressed up, dined and danced like a honeymoon couple.

Four days into the cruise, the ship docked at Aruba, where Tom and Chris disembarked to spend a few hours touring around the island.  They had just rented an ATV and were about to depart the rental lot when a brand new Dodge Ram pickup careened into them, head on.  The couple never saw it coming.  From all reports, Tom was killed instantly.  The force of the impact sent Christine over the front of the truck where she landed unconscious in a heap, her pelvis and leg shattered.
 
As the investigation unfolded, it was learned that the driver of the truck was drunk and had lost control of the vehicle.  The local newspaper reported  that drugs were found in the ashtray. After 3 days, Christine was airlifted back to London, Ontario where she remains in hospital, having undergone extensive reconstructive surgery to extract her leg from up inside her abdominal cavity and rebuild her destroyed knee and pelvis.  No one knows how she ever avoided internal damage to her organs.  Her family and friends are thanking God for sparing her life so that one day she can return to her boys.  Her emotional pain is all-consuming.  She has lost her lover and best friend, and the father of their children.
 
It's a heartbreaking tragedy that her youngest son won't remember what a wonderful father Tom was.  His older boys, Trent 4, and Cole, 6, have more of an understanding of what's happened, but anyone who ever knew Tom is devastated for these little boys, who will never walk back through the door and take them in his arms.
 
The man who killed Tom and shattered the lives of Christine and the boys is currently in prison for a minimum of 4 years.  His name is JAIRO GEERMAN and he is 30 years old.  He is a repeat DUI offender and the family has learned that, at the time of the accident, he was having an argument with a woman who was with him in the vehicle, not his wife.  He was previously employed at the airport, but was fired after having called in sick that day.

The Coast Guard, with help from the navy in the Caribbean Colombian fishing boat with over a hundred pounds of cocaine aboard intercepted. The drugs were hidden in a secret compartment, which they initially were not found. On board were six suspects arrested late Saturday Defence know.

Rudie Soemers, night watch commander, said the effort to find her became a criminal case two days after her disappearance. The woman from the affluent Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook was last seen leaving a nightclub called Carlos ‘n’ Charlie’s in the town of Oranjestad.

SAN NICOLAS, Aruba (AP) - Authorities detained two men Sunday in connection with the disappearance of an Alabama teenager, who went missing nearly a week ago in Aruba while on a high school senior trip, the attorney general said.

Attorney General Caren Janssen called the men “suspects,” but declined to provide further details. They were not part of the group of three men who said they dropped off 18-year-old Natalee Holloway at the Holiday Inn in the early morning hours of May 30.

Police officers and three FBI agents, who are playing a supportive role in the investigation, took the two men into custody at two different houses in the southeastern town of San Nicolas, according to an AP photographer at the scene.

Police knocked on the door of one house, put the suspect on the floor and handcuffed him. Officers later detained a second man. They were both led to an unmarked police car and taken away.

Neighbors described the men as security guards who worked at a hotel closed down for renovation near where the blonde honors student was staying. Police and FBI agents searched the renovated hotel on Saturday.

An official close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, has said the three other men who are not suspects - legal Aruban residents between the ages of 18 and 25 - told police they had taken Holloway to Arashi beach on the northwestern tip of Aruba before dropping her off at the hotel.

“They have been arrested as a result of investigations against them,” he said, although he would not say if they have been accused of a crime.
Aruba is a Dutch protectorate, and under Dutch law, police are not required to charge suspects immediately on arrest.
Oranjestad police and FBI agents detained the two men in separate operations at their homes about 7 a.m., police said.

The men, ages 28 and 30, were not among the three men in whose company Holloway was last seen.

Police also took three cars for “further technical investigation,” chief prosecutor Karen Janssen told CNN.

Police still are interrogating the men, she added. Janssen said could not give details about the questioning because the investigation was ongoing and other people might be arrested.

The men were seen leaving their respective houses calmly and without resistance. Police were seen later carrying bags out of the house.

Already a world traveler at 18, Natalee Holloway is nothing if not careful and dependable, relatives say. That’s why friends knew something was wrong when she failed to show up for the flight home to Alabama after a senior trip to Aruba.

“Natalee being late is a tipoff,” aunt Marcia Twitty said Saturday.

Now Holloway — with sparkling eyes, long blond hair, a dancer’s legs and a heart for service — is the focus of an all-out search in an island paradise just off the coast of Venezuela.

Back home, dozens of Holloway’s friends and classmates attended an afternoon prayer vigil Saturday. Stores are selling out of yellow ribbon as residents put bows on trees, mailboxes and doors all over Mountain Brook.

“The entire community is very concerned and very much in prayer,” said longtime city manager Sam Gaston.

Holloway, a Mississippi native, was known as a top student and tireless worker at Mountain Brook High School, where she graduated last month before leaving for Aruba with 124 other seniors. Twitty said seven adults went along as chaperone’s.

Holloway was in the National Honor Society, studied Spanish and was a member of American Field Service, which works with foreign exchange students. Her participation may have been a reflection of her travels, which Twitty said included trips to Europe, Canada and some cruises.

I have many personal accounts with the island of Aruba as I first went there 33 years ago. I dated an Aruban girl when I was in high school/college when I was the same age as Natalee. The difference being that the girl I dated had protective parents and her relatives on the island were a who’s who in Aruban government. It was also a more tranquil time back then as Aruba had not gotten to the glut of hotel expansion. The expansion of hotels and tourism meant that Aruba had to import help from many different countries and not just rely on Arubans. This is the biggest difference in the Aruba I used to know to the one that exits today.

Please kids, just be safe. I cannot reiterate using the buddy system when you are on vacation. Think first and pray for her safe return.

Bearly ... I am jealous.  For the past couple of weeks we have have had freezing temperatures ... snow and ... now rain.  It is an effort to leave my toasty warm home.   

Hubby made a comment yesterday about the two of us taking off to a warmer climate for Christmas next year.  I responded by telling him that Christmas would not come if there was no snow or rain.

And then not only that, Jane, within 72 hours, we knew that their first story was totally fabricated, that within the first 72 hours, I faced a room of 12 -- at least 12 detectives, Aruban and Dutch detectives, and a lead detective, Dennis Jacobs (ph), and they knew after we reviewed video footage from the Holiday Inn casino lobby that my daughter had never been brought back to the Holiday Inn. They knew that those suspects were fabricating a story from day one.

Well, Jane, something that the family knew—and we have to keep reminding everyone—after 72 hours -- 72 hours—we knew definitively that these suspects were not telling the truth. We knew that my daughter had never been brought back to the Holiday Inn. Of course we were becoming frustrated. Who wouldn‘t, at this point? ORANJESTAD, ARUBA — Douglass Markus has done what many of us who live in a cold climate dream about: Move to the Caribbean and live the life of an expat away from snow and shovels.

Markus, who is from Montreal, is the owner of Cuba’s Cookin’, a tiny restaurant in a circa 1877 building on a side street of Aruba’s capital. It’s away from the lights and the flashy restaurants, many of which are franchises of U.S.-based behemoths. The food, inspired by Markus’s love of Cubans, has a blend of spices and flavours that make for tasty dishes, including Ropa Vieja, a stringy serving of beef whose name means old clothes.

Cuba’s Cookin’, the only Aruba restaurant owned by a Canadian, is an intimate spot decorated with Cuban art from Markus’s personal collection. The chef is Cuban and so is the entertainer, a talented guitarist/singer named Ramon Riveron who plays Latin versions of classic rock songs like “Brown-Eyed Girl” and “Satisfaction”.

Markus’s primary business is as publisher of destination magazines that are available throughout the Caribbean. They’re the ones you’ll see in your hotel rooms with features on local life and listings for attractions, shopping and restaurants.

Despite the global recession and the sinking net revenues of many print publications, Markus says his stable of titles that include Aruba Nights has not fallen off over the past two years. “We have a good strategy,” he says. “We’ve been doing this for 27 years and know how to keep our costs in line.”

A lot of the editorial work for Markus’s publications is done in Montreal, but he needed to be in the Caribbean to convene with potential advertisers. Markus chose Aruba as his base 21 years ago because of its low crime rate and consistent weather.

He says there are 75 Canadians living in Aruba, the affluent Dutch island that has 103,000 residents and numerous vacation properties that cater primarily to Americans. Markus says he enjoys meeting Canadians who visit the island. He started Cuba’s Cookin’ as a place for him and his friends to gather.

“Things can get pretty lively in here sometimes,” he says.

What might surprise you is Markus is contemplating a return home. He usually visits Montreal four times a year and may go back full-time for the educational benefits of his 8-year-old son.

“I talk with one of the other Canadians who lives on the island here and we both say the same thing, Canada is the best country in the world,” Markus says. “You can see how other countries are and being in a place like this you get to learn about how other people who come here live and without a doubt Canada is the best place in the world to live.”

Netherlands threatened by Dutch weapons?

Four Italian-made frigates set out from the Venezuelan port city of Puerto Cabello in the middle of the night. They lead a fleet including amphibious landing craft and service ships, on their way to invade Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, three Caribbean islands forming part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. A Dutch 'Falklands war' has begun.

This is a nightmare scenario that Dutch military planners must nonetheless take into account, given Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's repeated threats over the last two years. Political leaders on the three islands downplay the threat, but Venezuela looms large, literally and figuratively, on the three islands. The closest, Aruba, lies just 27 kilometres off Venezuela's coast.

At the same time, the Dutch branch of a multinational company is equipping the Venezuelan navy with combat management systems and other guidance systems.

No violation

Lars Wormgoor, Dutch spokesman for Thales, which specialises in defence communication systems, says his company is equipping eight Spanish-made corvettes with sophisticated combat management systems. The ships will also be fitted with radio and electronic sensors for search and target tracking. The boats will become part of the Venezuelan navy, in a deal worth 250 million euro.

Mr Wormgoor says the contract with the Venezuelan navy is in line with Dutch government policy.

But researcher Frank Slijper from the Dutch organisation Campaign against the Weapons Trade (Campagne tegen Wapenhandel), says the Dutch government is violating its own guidelines:

"We've found that, in a lot of cases, the criteria under which the arms must be reviewed are not properly employed and that the regulations are sometimes used as a cover."

Empowering Chavez

Campaign against the Weapons Trade has released a report called 'Rhetoric or Restraint' detailing examples of countries throughout the European Union violating EU guidelines. The communal EU standpoint is that weapon deals should not threaten regional stability, nor should they come at the cost of social economic development.

In the case of Venezuela, Mr Slijper says, the contract awarded to Thales could threaten regional stability by elevating Venezuela's military capability above others in the region. But the sale also violates an even more fundamental principle: do not arm your potential enemies.

"It's a very strange situation because, in this case, the Netherlands is supplying weapons which could eventually be used against Dutch interests in the region."

Trusted partner

For its part, the Dutch Foreign Ministry is attempting to thread the needle. The Hague says it isn't allowing any new contracts with Venezuela, out of concern for the direction the country is taking. But it has allowed all existing contracts to proceed, in the interest of continuity. According to the ministry, "the government wants to be a trusted partner for the private sector."

This carefully-worded statement belies a reported difference of opinion over the approval of the Thales contract. Former Defense Minister Henk Kamp is reported to have advised against the sale, saying he feared Venezuela could pose a "Falkland conflict-type military threat to the security of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba."

Mr Kamp lost that domestic battle only to witness, a few years later, escalating threats from Venezuela.

Thales has also supplied similar information systems to the South Korean navy.

U.S. Forward Operating Location (USFOL) Commander LtCol Brian Bell said the USFOL will stay on its current course. He and U.S. Vice-Consul Winifred Hofstetter expect the U.S. government counter narcotics policy on Curacao and Aruba will not change in the coming years.

The USFOL has proven to be a success, but they said the U.S. State Department still has to officially confirm the 5-year USFOL agreement extension till 2016. The USFOL Commander applauded the excellent cooperation with Dutch Navy and local authorities. A combined counter narcotics approach is essential, because without the criminals get a “carte blanche” to operate.

The Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S) based in Key West, Florida, is a task force supported which coordinates the anti-drug monitoring and interdiction efforts in the region.

In the period October 2008 until September 2009, 700 flights were executed. 667 flights originated from Hato International Airport and 33 from Reina Beatrix Airport. The total active flight hours by the FOL (on station hours) were 3,583. The flights from the FOL contributed to the seizure of 234,000 kilos of cocaine, 7,000 kilos of marijuana and 36.5 kilos of heroine. (Antilliaans Dagblad)

Natalee was buried alive - that's the shocking conclusion of investigators after a female human jawbone was found near a swamp in Aruba, where Alabama teen Natalee Holloway disappeared, insiders revealed to The Enquirer.

In a tragedy that stunned the nation, Holloway vanished without a trace in 2005 during her high school graduation trip to the island - where she was last seen leaving a bar with Dutch teenager Joran van der Sloot.

Her sudden disappearance baffled authorities for years, but discovery of the jawbone - even though it wasn't immediately identified as Natalee's - triggered an explosion of renewed activity by investigators who have finally pieced together a scenario for Natalee's terrifying last minutes...and her grisly death.  In another bombshell, van der Sloot blurted out in prison that the remains of FIVE other bodies are still to be found in the same area of Aruba, a close source tells The Enquirer.

Soon after tourists stumbled upon the jawbone on Nov. 12, it was identified as being from a young white woman.  Incredibly it was found next to a swampy area where van der Sloot had previously admitted to burying Natalee's body - and even drew a map of the spot!

Stunned by the discovery, investigators have been taking a new look at previous taped confessions from Joran - which had been dismissed as the lies of a psychopath - and uncovered chilling clues indicating the beautiful blonde cheerleader could have been buried alive!

Joran - already imprisoned in Peru for the brutal murder of 21-year-old student Stephany Flores - was informed of the jawbone find by his Peruvian attorney.

Incredibly, the cold-hearted thug started laughing!

"He just sneered and tried to laugh it off as if it was nothing," a close source told The Enquirer.

But then the twisted killer bragged to a prison guard:  "There are at least FIVE more bodies out there.

It's no secret on the streets that the bad guys dump bodies in that swamp.  I mean mobsters and drug dealers - that's what they do to their victims.  This bone could be from any one of them."

The source added:  "No one knows whether to believe him, but he wants to be the big man in prison - always the center of attention."

Joran loves to taunt authorities with mind games, but he might be outsmarting himself.  Investigators analyzing Joran's previous confessions say they've come up with "tantalizing nuggets of truth" hidden between his lies.

In 2008, Patrick van der Eem, a Dutch undercover investigator who'd befriended Joran, secretly filmed him as he talked openly about Natalee's final moments.  Joran divulged he and the perky blonde enjoyed a wild night of drinking and then had a tryst on the beach - where she suddenly went into convulsions.

Investigators believe she was possibly slipped a date-rape drug.

Instead of calling for medical help, Joran said he and a friend disposed of Natalee.

Van der Eem asked him:  "How were you so sure she was dead?"

In a horrifying admission, Joran replied:  "I wasn't (expletive deleted) sure about that...but it really scared me to death."

When van der Eem suggested that Natalee was alive and simply in a coma when they buried her, the steely-eyed brute coldly and unemotionally answered:  "That's very possibly."

Poring over the confession, investigators revealed that despite the fact "Joran is a skilled liar, he sprinkles his lies with tantalizing nuggets of truth so that his stories are impossible to prove- while remaining plausible."

Their analysis of his chilling words paints a shocking picture of Natalee's demise - that she was buried and left to die in a filthy, boggy swamp.

"If she wasn't unconscious, imagine the horror that young girl went through in her final minutes," said the close source.  "That monster doesn't even know if she was dead.  He had her buried anyway!

"Poor Natalee could have been in and out of consciousness as she was dragged to her grave.  She could have been aware she was being buried alive and unable to fight off this evil man!"

Added an insider:  "It's horrifying to think Natalee might have been aware of what was happening to her - but was unable to stop it."

Dutch experts leaped into the investigation in mid-November shortly after the jawbone's discovery.  They began comparing the bone, which still had a single molar intact, with Natalee's DNA and asked her father Dave Holloway to send them her dental records by overnight courier.

"Devastating as it was, he became hopeful it meant he'd finally be able to bring Natalee home," a friend told The Enquirer.

For investigators, the bond held out new hope of nailing Joran for Natalee's murder.

It was discovered on a beach next to a wetland wilderness area - which Joran had pinpointed on a hand-drawn map as Natalee's final resting place.

Joran prepared the map for Dutch journalist Jaap Armesz, who befriended him when he was in Holland two years ago and did a series of taped interviews with him.

As The Enquirer revealed in an earlier blockbuster story, the journalist turned over the map to the Holloway family.

The wetland area adjoining the ocean, called the Bubali Bird Sanctuary, is usually flooded with treated water from Aruba's sewage processing area.

But experts say heavy storms in recent months raised the water level of the sanctuary and could have washed bones from a skeleton buried there into the sea - and the jawbone could have washed back ashore, where the tourists discovered it.

"There's no question where the jawbone came from - it was found very close to where the bird sanctuary waters empty into the ocean when they're high enough," private investigator Art Wood told The Enquirer.

Wood, a former U.S. Secret Service agent who investigated Natalee's disappearance for her family, confirmed:  "On the map, Joran marked an area where he said he and a friend left Natalee's body after she died."

The Arubans had conducted a superficial investigation of the area and found nothing, but once he had the map, Dave Holloway pressured the government to conduct a major search.

Authorities in Aruba - who don't want to scare away their tourist trade - point-blank refused to let the planned search proceed.

Aruban prosecutor Taco Stein admitted to The Enquirer:  "We never thoroughly searched the Bubali pond area.  We looked there, but there was never an exhaustive search."

Joran's secret "graveyard" might contain the bodies of other women who have vanished in or near Aruba, for decades a smoetimes - fatal magnet for the young and beautiful.

Amy Lynn Bradley was 23 on March 24, 1998, when she disappeared off a cruise ship, which left Aruba headed for Curacao.  She remains missing to this day.

Nevina Labouovic was sailing with her family near Aruba in 2001 when the entire family and the boat disappeared.

Said a source close to the investigation:  "Joran's claim of knowing about five more bodies has investigators puzzled and wondering if he is responsible for the deaths of other women who might be buried near Natalee."

I do not believe that Natalee Holloways remains are in the Bubali swamp but it appears that Aruban authorities are not even going through the motions of an investigation.

Dave Holloway was requested by Aruban Authorities FOUR MONTHS AGO to delay the search of the Bubali Bird Sanctuary ... claiming that an official search was forthcoming.  According to Taco Stein words to the National Inquirer that official search has not yet happened.

(CNN) -- Aruban authorities are urging Natalee Holloway's father, Dave Holloway, to delay volunteer search efforts in her disappearance until police get better information on the case from Peruvian investigators who have spoken to Joran van der Sloot, prosecutor Peter Blanken said.

Police do not want their investigation jeopardized or possible evidence contaminated in the Bubali Bird Sanctuary, a swamp area where Joran once said he dumped Holloway's body, Blanken said. Aruban authorities wish to search a more focused area once they receive more information from van der Sloot and his laptop, which may include files linking him to the Holloway disappearance.

Hinton's husband, 72-year-old Michael Hinton,
died last week while the couple was vacationing in
Aruba, according to Norfork Mayor Jim Reeves.

Reeves said the couple was swimming in the ocean
when they were struck by a wave. Michael Hinton
thought his wife was in trouble and apparently
drown while trying to help her, Reeves said.

"We're trying to figure out the best way to help her,
to support her," Reeves said.

According to Aruba media reports, Hinton died at
Baby Beach near the Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort
on Thursday. Funeral arrangements for Hinton are
pending with Roller Funeral Home.

Hello my friend. It has been a long time.  I do not know what the Ocean Explorer is.  If it is a vessel, it is certainly not mine. I do not know who Kermit is and I can tell you that since the crew members are employees of mine, mostly, except for the contractors who signed non-disclosure statements and other 3rd Party company personnel, it does not make sense.

There were stories which were addressed in an interview with Ein Vandaag regarding our boat searching for oil before the vessel ever left the U.S.  I have not addressed any of these bullshit artists as I do not feel that the effort which was put forth by so many of us regarding the search and all that continues to take place in support of finding  Natalee’s remains are worth addressing.  The problem is that these people have nothing else to do but stir the pot.  They really need to get a life and put their efforts towards helping in the search.
 
I would like to see this photo of a man in a red shirt on the boat.  I have not seen it.  Could you please forward it to me.  I am sorry to hear that you and our group is being dragged in the mud by these people.  I was told of this last week, but, have chosen not to respond to people like this.  We know what we did and what we are doing.  That is good enough for me and the Holloway family.  As for that supposed skull in the cage, that is all bull and quite frankly, I believe you r initial story of what that cage was being used for is probably correct.
 
Someday, hopefully, we will find her and all this garbage will be put to rest.  By the way, have you spoken with our friend?  I have sent him several emails with no response.  Please ask him to call me.

Here is a snippet from an email I [THE LEAK]rec'd from Lalas.
"I asked Jug about Schaeffer...he is the oil guy. He was the one that provided the cash to get down there. Silvetti knew he would get more business from Schaeffer if he mapped....
while they were looking...the ocean floor. All the crew was asked to do was look for Natalee or anything suspicious as in small things like a cage or bones or whatever.
They do a large mapping process while they are looking for the details.
Schaeffer would use the large mapping of the general layout of the ocean floor
 to further look for oil...etc...while they looked for Natalee too.
Silvetti was the one that offered to look for Natalee and not Schaefer.

SECOND: Caps is telling John in the email that the man in the red shirt is FBI. When, in fact, that is not what people said. They said it was JOHN SILVETTI in the red shirt.
I think CAPS specifically mentions this to John Silvetti in the email to see if John lets him know if there were any FBI on board!

THIRD: John has no idea that Kyle Kingman, one of his crew memebers and person who set up the blog site is posting at SM under the name Ocean Exploration. I find that odd considering John's sister is posting along WITH Kyle at BFN. One would think his sister would have mentioned it. One would think that Kyle would have talked about it with John Silvetti considering Kyle goes to Johns house a lot! Just seems odd to me.

FOURTH: John immediately tells CAPS about a non-disclousre agreement to answer CAPS inquiry as to crew members being traitors along with him.

Maybe it's just me, but I find that an odd thing to respond to. I would think he would inquire as to what do you mean we are being called American Traitors by Kermit? Who is Kermit?
Instead, he tells CAPS MY EMPLOYEES CAN'T TALK! But little does John Silvetti know that Kyle Kingman, Tim Trahan and Louis Schaefer violate the so called non-disclosure aggreement and attempt to sell the ROV images.

I started posting the information, if memory servers me on Nov. 24, 2008. Previously, I was only posting hints about the cage, if I recall correctly and I'm kinda pretty damned sure of that. Heh Heh. So SOMEONE OTHER THEN CAPS was emailing John Silvetti keeping him informed.

SIXTH: John tells Caps no skull inside the cage, BUT he believes CAPS about what the cage was used for. NOW here we have another foible because do we believe what Kyle told us that it was JOHN that told CAPS the cage was a post office. OR do we believe JOHN's email to CAPS that it is CAPS that told John the cage is a post office?

I believe we have read repeatedly about the currents/tide at the Baby Beach area being dangerous throughout the past 5 plus years.  I agree, but from my few experiences on Caribbean islands and a visit to Cancun, I do not recall seeing a lifeguard on any beach that we visited.  EVERYTHING you do is at your own risk, it seems.  

An Investigation by the FBI?

Could it be that the objective of the Persistence undertaking was two fold from the getgo?  Could it be that Louis Schaefer and John Silvetti gave the deceptive impression that the undertaking was all about locating Natalee Holloway’s remains?  Could it be that it was realized that a two fold mission would afford Schaefer and Silvetti the opportunity to take advantage of Tim Miller's association with TES to raise funds?

The Persistence undertaking may have been deceptively two fold but ... affording John Silvetti the benefit of the doubt ... is it possibly that he went into this venture with the intention of being an active participant in the recovery of Natalee Holloway's remains in the event of a discovery?

Could it be that sometime between the discovery of the trap/cage on Christimas Day and the December 30, 2007 dive, Aruban authorities became involved?  Could it be that during this period John Silvetti may have been offered an incentive to turn a blind eye in regard to the recovery process?

In other words, there would be no chain of command as the Arubans would be in complete control of the process to retrieve Natalee's remains ... a process that the crew of the Persistence would not participate.  The only Persistence diver who was a member of the observation dive would claim his vision was obscured.

Could it be that Tim Miller's respective calls to Beth and Dave were not anticipated by John Silvetti or Aruban authories?  Could it be that Tim Miller's words to America in the Dateline special were not anticipated?  Was this man a "liability" who had to be reckoned with ... whose voice had to be silenced?

It is a given that any contracts with Aruban connections afforded to John Silvetti/Louis Shaeffer following the Persistence undertaking ... it is a given that Kyle Kingman's revealed posts to a private forum and ... it is a given that actual footage of the ROV videos should have been investigated by the FBI.  Justice for an American citizen demanded it.

What is the holdup?  Could the words of Scared Monkeys administrator in 2007 still be considered a factor?

I never saw a lifeguard anywhere near Baby Beach or the southern tip of Aruba.  There is a prison and wide open beaches with big waves, currents and tons of coral with seagulls eating at it on a sand bar.  There is a small gap between the sandbars that you can swim out into the ocean and it looked very rough out there.  Inside the sandbars towards the beach was calm.  There is one hut that serves food and that's about it.  Anything could happen at Baby Beach and you are out in the middle of nowhere.

The determination was made using Holloway's dental records, according to a statement issued late this morning by the Aruba Public Prosecutor's Office.

Tamikosmom -  I've been trying to catch up with some of the posts. 

I was with our friends who found the jaw bone.  (His wife is the xray technologist) For the life of me, I can't remember how far back the molar was on the jaw.  I can tell you that it was pretty far back but I didn't pay enough attention to whether it would be considered a wisdom tooth or molar.  I wish that we had gone to our room to get our camera for a picture... Especially after reading some of the posts that describe the corruption and mishandling of the case from the beginning in 2005.  However, never experiencing such an event, we kept the find fairly quiet and private and just wanted to make sure to get it to the proper authorities.  When we walked off the beach, my husband and the friend that actually found the bone went immediately to the front desk area to report it.

I read one of the Holloway's experiences with their statement back in 2005... when Mr. Holloway said that he hesitated because he had to sign a statement that was in a different language. (Dutch)  Well, my husband and friend had to do the same thing.  They made their statement and then it was translated into Dutch on the formal report.  Signing something that they could not read was an uncomfortable feeling, but... as Mr. Holloway mentioned... they felt they had to trust the translation and sign it.  My husband asked for a copy but they stated that they could not give him a copy.  ugggg...

I'm still so upset that they determined it wasn't Natalee...  This recent find just added another false hope for this family. :(

You all did what most would have done in the same situation.  IF I did not have an indepth knowledge of the corrupt investigation that has prevented justice from prevailing for Natalee Holloway since May, 2005 ... my quest would have been to get that jawbone into the hands of the proper  authorities.  It would not have occured to me to take photos.  In other words ... I would have done exactly what you and your friends did.

If we also look back at when the RV Persistence left shore in Aruba to search - the BOMBSHELL - all 3 suspects were re-arrested by Hans Mos and then they were released which turned out to be just another Aruba diversion.

I'm curious, what made you come to SM and post about the jaw bone? Had you followed the case at some point?

I can answer your question. If the other teeth were missing and bone was intact the sockets where the teeth were would have specific shapes. The large sockets would be the first and second molars. The third molar would be the wisdow tooth, the 3rd largest socket by almost double in size. The determination would not have needed an xray. If the 3rd molar or wisdow tooth was impacted in bone, its position and angulation would have helped in the identification with a CT scan or xray.

The Birmingham community's disappointment in the latest development in the Natalee Holloway case speaks, really, to our desperate desire for answers.

And if those of us who didn't even know Holloway felt so knotted up over tests on a young female's jawbone found earlier this month on a beach in Aruba, we can only imagine what an emotional corkscrew her family must have endured.

Holloway, then 18, disappeared in Aruba in 2005 while on a trip with her senior class at Mountain Brook High School. Though the case has gone through cycles of investigatory starts and stops, reliable answers have been in short supply.

The search has been so sad and sustained, it was hard not to wish the jawbone could be matched with Holloway, even though it would prove she is dead. At least then, her family would know for sure.

But even that awful truth once again proved elusive. Aruban prosecutors said in a statement Tuesday the bone did not belong to Holloway. Based on comparisons with Holloway's dental records, forensic scientists were able to prove the "bone material and molar" were not Holloway's.

To be sure, for Holloway's family, no outcome would have been painless. But what made this episode particularly hard was the fact family members had to wait for the results and that they were notified the way the rest of us were -- in a press statement. "Apparently, Aruban prosecutors were more sensitive to media concerns than the painful vigil of a mother," said John Q. Kelly, a lawyer for Holloway's mother, Beth.

It wasn't Beth Holloway's first frustration with Aruban authorities.

Her daughter was last seen leaving a bar with a troubled young man named Joran van der Sloot, whose own mother says he suffers from mental problems. While he has been arrested at least twice in connection with Holloway's disappearance, he has been released each time, and Aruban prosecutors have repeatedly said they don't have enough evidence to charge him.

He is now in jail in Peru, where he is accused of killing a 21-year-old woman exactly five years after the date of Holloway's disappearance.

Along the way, he has given assorted accounts of what happened to Holloway, and he has been accused of trying to extort $250,000 from Holloway's family in exchange for the real story of what happened and where they could find her body.

No wonder so many of us hoped some semblance of an answer might be found, finally, in a piece of bone.

Instead, the search goes on. For Holloway's family, we can only hope that, someday, the answers will come.

Kermit - I knew about Natalee Holloway from the news and being a mother myself, it stays in your heart.  I also have a timeshare in Aruba, so the story has captured my mind.  The experience of finding the jaw bone sort of blew me away.  When we arrived home I went on the internet in order to follow the progress of the find.  I actually began to feel nervous that the jaw bone was not going to be taken seriously but on Tuesday, Nov 16th I began to see the jaw bone find spreading on the internet and was relieved.  Your scaredmonkeys.com site came up in many of my searches so I began reading and eventually bookmarked the site.  For many days I stumbled around because I took me a while to figure out how to get back to where I was reading the day before.  I finally figured out how to navigate the site and eventually chose to post my experience... but had to apply/register before being able to post.

kkthy, we all so appreciate your participation in the discussions here and your willingness to share with us all you can. The actions you took after the bone was found were all appropriate and you had no expectation that all correctness wouldn't be followed through after it was turned over to authorities.

To me, that's the biggest problem with Aruba. Decent people tend to expect decency and get blind sided by an agenda they are unaware of. I'm not at all sure that you didn't find Natalee's remains. Perhaps your experience will help the next person bring a "find" to a place where results can be trusted, and if so, you've provided a crucial service to a grieving family. Thank you for explaining.  You never know, maybe because you did come forward with a female jawbone, someone who knows the truth about what happened to Natalee will have the courage to come forward and tell the FBI rather then Aruba authorities.

Man buries girlfriend in his jail cell

LIMA - A Dutchman imprisoned in Lima for drug trafficking murdered his girlfriend during a visit and walled up body in his jail cell, police said Monday.

Authorities discovered the body of 22-year-old Leslie Paredes Silva three months later.

Jason Sanford Stalig Conquet, 32, confessed to his crime when prison guards asked him about the odor emanating from a concrete ledge he had built into a corner of his cell to hide the body of 22-year-old Peruvian Leslie Paredes Silva, they said.

The head of the national prison system Wilson Hernandez told RPP radio that Stalig Conquet received a visit from Paredes in the Lurigancho prison sometime in August.

"Apparently they had an argument inside (the cell) and he ended up strangling her," he said

"He also confessed to police that he built a sort of cement bench in his cell and that he buried his girlfriend there," he added.

The woman's body was removed by prison officials and taken to a morgue.

The gruesome discovery has raised a storm of criticism of the authorities failure to keep track of all visitors to the prison, as well as for the gross overcrowding at the facility, which was built in the 1960s to house 2,000 inmates but that now holds four times as many.

The police said in a statement it was investigating the prison murder and that any negligence on the part of security personnel in charge of Lurigancho would be severely punished.

Stalig Conquet is the second Dutchman charged with murder this year in Peru.

Joran Van der Sloot, 23, was charged in May with killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores, also Peruvian, in a Lima hotel. Apparently, she had stumbled on information linking him to the 2005 disappearance in Aruba of US national Natalee Holloway.

States wants investigation into oil contracts

WILLEMSTAD — A States’ majority adopted a motion yesterday ordering an investigation into contracts, which the previous government concluded with foreign oil companies. The MFK and opposition party PNP seconded the motion, a proposal from the coalition parties MAN and PS. However, another motion from the PAR to approach the Public Prosecutor was not carried.

During yesterday’s States meeting, Premier Gerrit Schotte mentioned that former premiers Etienne Ys and Emily de Jongh-Elhage (both of PAR) had concluded contracts with foreign petroleum companies. In this, it regarded confidentiality agreements with Repsol SA, Shell Exploration Inc and Murphy’s Overseas Ventures Inc to exchange seismological information. Schotte said that it supposedly regarded illegal contracts, which the premiers in question had concluded without the required authorization decision. Former premier Etienne Ys responded to this by stating he had not done anything unlawful and that these contracts only regarded the perusal and analyzing of already existing seismological information.

Schotte repeatedly emphasized that the contracts were concluded with oil companies, with the objective to start oil explorations and that due expectations were raised with these companies, with contracts that supposedly were concluded in an unlawful manner. The Premier received support from his own MFK party during the debate. For instance, Dean Rozier pointed out that the former PAR-premiers had concluded contracts against the existing rules. “They had signed without the required authorization decision. It regards contracts, which the country may not conclude, whilst contracts may not be concluded with companies domiciled abroad. Moreover, in this the government acted against all advices of the Directorate Legislation & Legal Affairs.”

However, the PAR party did not accept the Premier’s explanation. According to the chairman of the yellow party, Pedro Atacho, despite Schotte’s argument in the morning hours, he was not able to prove that the previous governments had concluded contracts for oil and petroleum drilling in the Curaçao waters, as mentioned by the coalition parties in the election period. However, MAN States member Eunice Eisden mentioned that the PAR had tried to create confusion. “The issue is not whether there are contracts for oil drilling, but how one deals with the natural riches of this island.”

Approach OM
Both the coalition and the opposition parties introduced an own motion at the end of the debate. The motion from the coalition insisted on an investigation by the government into the contracts. However, the PAR did not think the motion went far enough and said that if the coalition parties had sufficient proof that the previous governments possessed contracts for oil and petroleum drilling, they should approach the Public Prosecutor (OM). However, the coalition was of the opinion that an investigation was to be conducted first. Eisden: “It regards more than just contracts. We must assure that this never recurs, and we will decide when we will go to the OM.” PS-leader Helmin Wiels added that there’s no sense in the OM conducting an investigation at this moment because ‘the OM, just like the Court and the Intelligence Service, are seriously corrupted’. An investigation would be advisable only after a parliamentary enquiry with the OM, according to the PS-leader.

The coalition’s proposal was adopted with 12 votes and 7 dissenting votes. PNP member Humphrey Davelaar voted for the proposal because he supports further investigation into how one dealt with this subject in the past. Davelaar also voted for the PAR-motion that suggested approaching the OM directly because the premier had stated that the contracts were concluded in an unlawful manner. However, that motion was not carried. According to Eugene Cleopa, the motion proves that the PAR party was prepared to lodge a complaint against their own former premiers.

Dental records were electronically sent by FBI to the NFI on November 17, 2010.  According to Taco Stein ... an immediate determination was made that the jawbone was not Natalee Holloway case related.  Why was Beth and Dave not afforded an immediate call from Aruban authorities that the opportunity to bring Natalee home was not going to happen.  Natalee Holloway parents learned about the results one week later ... the same time the NFI results were released in an official statement.

Hi everyone. I've been lurking a lot lately, mostly from work. I haven't posted much yet, since I just got approved today and didn't want to post too much from work! Anyway, I'm going to give a quick introduction, but I am mostly here and curious about Natalee Holloway.

I'm 22, married to a submariner. Natalee graduated high school one year before me, and that's why I think I feel so connected. It feels personal. That same summer she disappeared I visited Australia and New Zealand, but of course at the time, I wasn't thinking much about what had happened in Aruba just a few months before. I realize now, that it could have been anyone -- and it could have happened to me or my friends (or anyone, again) anywhere, if the perfect storm existed. How many poor choices did I make drunkenly throughout college? A lot. I was an honors student, most responsible of my friends, the "least experienced" with boys... wanted to go pre-med to school, etc. etc. There are a lot of similarities. College ended up being a very difficult learning experience for me in many ways. I was raped twice within a span of a year and drugged once (we don't know with what -- too scared to go to the hospital) though thankfully I was saved by a friend before anything could happen. In talking about this case with my friends, we all know that most of us would have also made the same decision Nat did and gotten into the car with Joran and the Kalpoe brothers. In fact, some of us would have been proud! (It isn't difficult to see that Joran would appear attractive especially to someone who was intoxicated.) I have gotten into cars with strangers before. Everything parents teach their kids not to do... when you're young, nothing bad will happen to you & it's all a good story to tell -- unfortunately that is SO not the case. Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is I feel close to this case because it could have very well been me.

I do have a couple of questions. I've been reading a LOT on this forum and others -- but there is SO much information to digest. If someone wouldn't mind being patient with me... could you clear up a few things for me? I apologize if this seems silly to those of you who have followed the case from the start... I haven't been paying attention to theories and information until last week. I'm waiting on four different books to come in the mail. (My husband is deployed and if for no other reason, this is keeping me occupied. I highly doubt I'll be able to add any insight... my sleuthing skills are very underdeveloped!)

1. I've read in a bunch of forums that Natalee's key card was used a bunch of times. Was this ever determined beyond reasonable doubt to be someone else using this key card?

2. Following the key card... I've heard there was a picture floating around from security cameras of a girl who looked like Natalee, with her friend (she was named, but I forget who it was) but Beth said it wasn't her. Dave wasn't sure. Has anyone seen this picture? Why have we not seen this video? Furthermore, there was supposedly video footage of the hallway (by her door) but for the timeframes of the key card, NO ONE was in the footage? Is this sketchy, or has this been cleared up? I'm also of the opinion the kids probably used the sliding glass doors and kept them unlocked to get to each other/to the beach rather than walk around. Seems like something plausible. What happened with the person who claimed to have known for a fact Nat was in her room at 3 AM?

Lastly... I guess this is much more of a general comment. Now, I know in the U.S., it is hard to get a conviction for rape. Especially when drugs/alcohol are involved. I know personally my case was thrown out because I could not remember ANYTHING and the DA told me that because I could not remember if I said "No" that they could not prosecute. Some kinda BS if you ask me, as we are taught 'the absence of no does not mean yes.' (I hope this doesn't make you uncomfortable that I am so candid about talking about this. It still does bother me, but it helps to talk about it, and I am married to one of the most wonderful men on the planet and all roads led to him... I am doing very well despite some tragic events.) If Nat did accidentally die after she and Joran were doing whatever it is they were doing... wouldn't it have been easier for Joran, his dad, and whomever else was involved to cover up a rape? Even if she had been drugged. Wouldn't it have been easier to cover all of that up and write it off as a tragic binge drinking accident, than to forever have this hanging over their heads? I know that there is "no body no case" according to Joran's father, but, there is always the CHANCE someone could come forward with the truth. So I guess I find it hard to believe the scenario that seems most probable... but then again, I am a newbie.

I don't claim to know even an iota as much as most of you.

I'm looking forward to continuing to schlep my way through the archives and get somewhat caught up to date.

DAVE HOLLOWAY, NATALEE‘S FATHER:  Well, we need to clear up a little of the smoke and mirrors problem.  I provided the police with the documents that they‘re referring to, the hotel keys, as a matter of fact.  Beth obtained those immediately upon arriving on the island and then provided me with a copy that I provided to the police.

Joe failed to mention that that same code was used again at 11:02 AM and 11:08 AM prior to them getting on—or leaving to the airport.  So key number one, which we feel like Natalee used, was last used at 8:30 PM the prior night.  So that key was not used again after the trip was over.

Authorities declined to comment whether there was a relationship between the suspects and other three, earlier described as students — two Surinamese and a native of the Netherlands — who told police they dropped off Holloway at her hotel around 2 a.m. on May 30. Hotel employees, however, say that security cameras did not record her return.

Van der Sloot claimed he left Holloway outside the Holiday Inn resort where the group was staying after they took a late-night trip to a scenic lighthouse, Bearman said, and he even accompanied the family to the hotel to show them the exact spot where she was dropped off.

His story didn't add up, though, according to Bearman.

"We started pressing him on that because we had students who were in the lobby until 5 a.m., and she never arrived," she said.

Page 96:  The black and white footage plays.  Suddenly a girl with light hair crosses the threshold of the lobby.  The video is grainy, but clearly shows the lobby entrance of the Holiday Inn.  I ask them to rewind it and play it again.  I recognize her.  I want it to be Natalee, but know it's not.  It's Mat's daughter.  I ask to see it again.  Again.  Again.  Play it once more.  Now again.  More than ten times they rewind the spot on the tape that shows this young woman coming into the hotel and stopping at the front desk to get a key.  I so want it to be my daughter.  Maybe if I look at it enough times I can make it her.  Please!  Play it again.  Slow it down.  Now pause it.  Please, be Natalee.  But it isn't.  I already know the second time I see it that it isn't her.  The tapes play out.

I was only curious about the video footage since I had read somewhere that she was seen in footage from HI with another girl, and that when analyzed for gait, body type, etc., and compared to the casino footage it seemed like it was her. But, there were a lot of other thin blonde girls on the trip... I just wish we could see this footage for ourselves!

The key card issue can be explained a million different ways, I was just curious. I always lose my hotel key cards and have to get new ones, or trade with whomever I'm with, so it definitely can be easy to mess them up.

I'm not really expecting to come to any conclusions that I feel mostly comfortable with. There are many different theories and speculations from this forum alone that I am drawn to, even when they are polar opposites! To be a fly on the wall... I wish I knew some of the MB students. Not that any of them would appreciate being bothered with it. But I feel like they were awfully quiet. I cannot imagine feeling the guilt they must have felt for not having done something different...

I don't know how to quote from several posts so I'll just post without the quotes.  Thank you for your comments and kind words.  This board has so much information and that is why I kept coming back here and lurking.  It wasn't long before I felt I could share my experience.

You want to hear something very strange?  A co-worker of mine has a niece that is in charge of an upcoming seminar here in CT.  She is also responsible for picking up the speaker at the airport and transporting them to the seminar.  Her niece called her immediately because.... guess who the speaker is?  ................ Beth Holloway!  She is giving a talk on safety and what "One bad decision" can do.  I don't have the details of the exact name/title of the talk and the exact location as yet, but she is coming to CT some time in January for this seminar.  My co-worker asked if we wanted tickets to go an of course I said YES. 

I have felt sort of pulled toward Natalee's story since my vacation.  We began our vacation with Beth confronting Joran in the prison in Peru....  We ended our vacation finding a jaw bone... and now Beth Holloway is coming to CT and I may be able to meet her and perhaps even be able to give her a hug.  It is a feeling like someone/something is trying to make sure we don't forget.  Were we close to Natalee?  Does the jaw bone belong to someone who is trying to make sure people don't give up?  It's just a weird feeling... sort of spiritual.  My apologies if this all sounds strange but it's such a strong feeling that I have.

Anyhoo..  I just wanted to thank everyone for your comments.  This site is great and it is clear that you all really care.

Page 219: In each city I have the privilege to speak to several high schools, churches, or law enforcement and civic groups.  This translates to thousands of youths and adults.  Delivering this safety mesage is my triumph over devastation.  If gives me great joy and is tremendously rewarding work.  I think that I can bear the pain of losing Natalee if it means that I can prevent another family from going through our tragic experience.  If even just one young person in tens of thousands is saved, then it's well worth it.

I ask young people to make a conscious decision to stay safe.  They have to make the choice.  And I'm not asking them do anything more than I ask myself.  I have to make difficult choices every day.  I have to make a conscious decision every morning when I wake up not to be bitter, not to live in resentment and let anger control me.  It's not easy.  I ask God to help me.  And I know it's not easy for young people to think about choosing not to get into a situation in which they can't defend themselves.  But we all have to make hard choices.  Every day.

LIMA, Peru (AP) — A Dutch man linked to the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway is in custody in Chile, facing potential murder charges in Peru and extortion charges in the U.S.

Joran van der Sloot was detained in a taxi Thursday after crossing the border from Peru, where authorities say the 22-year-old man is the prime suspect in Sunday's murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

Authorities planned to fly van der Sloot back to the Peruvian border Friday morning, according to a Chilean police spokesman who spoke on condition that he not be named in line with department policy.

Chile's Interior Ministry was considering whether to send van der Sloot back to Peru, although officials say they have yet to receive an arrest warrant issued by Peru in connection with Sunday's killing of Flores.

A fixture on TV true-crime shows after Holloway's disappearance in Aruba, the Dutchman did not speak or even turn his head when photographers shouted his name as Chilean police escorted him, without handcuffs, into a Santiago station for questioning.

Aruban authorities didn't prosecute van der Sloot even after he was caught on video saying he had asked a friend to dump Holloway's body. The Alabama teen's family was outraged by how Aruban authorities handled the case, and now the family of another young woman wants justice.

"This isn't a coincidence, this murder," Flores' father, Lima entertainment impresario Ricardo Flores, told reporters after van der Sloot's arrest.

Flores, a 48-year-old former race car driver and sometime politician, buried his daughter Thursday in the upscale Jardines de la Paz cemetery accompanied by about 100 mourners. He called on authorities to immediately bring van der Sloot to Peru to face justice.

"It's not just about my daughter," he said. "There's a matter pending in Aruba, and we don't know how many more remain unpunished."

The same day he was arrested in Chile, Van der Sloot was charged in Alabama with trying to extort $250,000 in return for giving the location of Holloway's body and describing the circumstances of her death. Federal prosecutors did not say who was allegedly extorted, but filed a sworn statement saying that van der Sloot got a partial payment of $15,000 wired to a Netherlands bank.

Stephany Flores' neck was broken in a hotel room registered to van der Sloot, who police believe met the University of Lima business student for the first time the previous night at a nearby casino. Her body was found by a maid late Tuesday.

She was fully clothed and there were no signs she had been sexually assaulted, the chief of Peru's criminal police, Gen. Cesar Guardia, told The Associated Press.

"The room was a complete mess," he said in an interview. He added that no potential murder weapon was found, indicating the killer may have used his bare hands.

Guardia added that police are investigating why it took until Tuesday night for hotel staff to discover the body.

Van der Sloot remains the prime suspect in the disappearance of Holloway, an 18-year-old who was celebrating her high school graduation on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba when she disappeared May 30, 2005. He told investigators he left her on a beach, drunk. That's the last anyone saw of her. Van der Sloot was twice arrested in her disappearance — and twice released for insufficient evidence.

"If they have enough proof that he committed the crime in Peru, maybe, just maybe, that might help to get him to confess in Natalee's case. It just might crack him," a Holloway family lawyer, Vinda de Souza, told the AP.

A spokeswoman for Holloway's mother, Beth, issued a statement saying she "extends her deepest sympathy" to the Flores family "and prays for swift and sure justice."

Van der Sloot put up no resistance when he was detained Thursday about halfway to the Pacific coast from Santiago, deputy Chilean investigative police spokesman Fernando Ovalle said.

Peruvian authorities had issued an arrest warrant for him through Interpol after learning van der Sloot had crossed into northern Chile on Monday.

Van der Sloot checked into the room where Flores' body was found May 14 after arriving on a flight from Colombia, Guardia said. He was in Peru for a poker tournament and it appears he and Flores met Saturday evening at Atlantic City, the Lima casino hosting the tourney, Guardia said.

The police chief said Flores was killed between 5 a.m. Sunday, when the victim and suspect were seen entering his room by a hotel employee, and about 8:45 a.m., when two people saw van der Sloot leave.

"Various things aren't very clear," Guardia said, among them the killer's motive.

It certainly wasn't money, he said. Van der Sloot had no problem paying for his travel to Chile.

Truck driver Luis Aparcana said van der Sloot gave him 1,500 Peruvian soles ($525) to take him from Ica, a town south of Lima, to the Chilean border. The Dutchman didn't speak Spanish very well and carried two suitcases, he said in a TV interview.

Aparcana said van der Sloot appeared "worried, because he kept smoking cigarettes. He didn't have a cell phone but he had a laptop that he would take out, handle and then put back."

Lawyers for van der Sloot did not immediately comment. On Wednesday, a lawyer in New York who has represented him, Joe Tacopina, cautioned against a rush to judgment.

"Joran van der Sloot has been falsely accused of murder once before. The fact is he wears a bull's-eye on his back now and he is a quote-unquote usual suspect when it comes to allegations of foul play," Tacopina said.

The Holloway case has followed many twists and turns.

Two years ago, a Dutch television crime reporter captured hidden-camera footage of van der Sloot saying he was with Holloway when she collapsed on a beach from being drunk. He said he believed she was dead and asked a friend to dump her body in the sea. Judges subsequently refused to arrest van der Sloot on the basis of the tape.

The journalist, Peter de Vries, reported later in 2008 that he had documented van der Sloot recruiting Thai women in Bangkok for sex work in the Netherlands.

The population of Aruba is welcome on the following three information evenings, to hear more about the upcoming hunting the boa. Local Man Finds Jawbone On Aruban Beach
Authorities Investigate Whether Bone Belongs To Natalee Holloway

LEBANON, Conn. -- Investigators are expected to reveal whether a jawbone found in Aruba belongs to Natalee Holloway, who disappeared without a trace in 2005. But, details are emerging on how that bone was found on the beach by a man from Lebanon on a trip with his friends.

Both of the couples said that if the bone does belong to Holloway, they just want her family to know that they treated the discovery with dignity and have been going through a range of emotions ever since they found it.

The friends from Andover and Lebanon flew to Aruba earlier this month to celebrate their wedding anniversaries together.

They said the bone was found on the last day of their trip.

"It was out last day at The Phoenix," said David Knox, of Andover. "We decided to relax and enjoy the beach."

So the couples, celebrating their 35th wedding anniversaries at the resort, took a swim.

However, while Gil Beaulieu's wife and friends sat in the sun, he strolled the beach.

"Gil was trying to find that perfect shell," Knox said.

Beaulieu said, "I noticed there wasn't a lot of people in that area, so I thought maybe I could find some shells."

Beaulieu, from Lebanon, said he noticed a really shiny one that caught his eye.

"I picked up the shell first," he said. "Then I saw the bone. I hesitated because I kind of knew what it was right off the bat."

He said he brought it to his wife, an X-ray technologist who looks at bones every day.

"You do hesitate, because you're not expecting to find a human bone," said Eileen Beaulieu.

"All the teeth were missing except for one molar in the back," Gil Beaulieu said. "It was in good shape."

Such good shape that they could even see a tiny hole in the tooth.

By now, Kathy Knox said she had Natalee Holloway in her head.

"That was basically what I was thinking about," she said. "Is it Natalee?"

They said they put the jaw bone in a plastic cup and then Beaulieu and Knox brought it to the hotel lobby where security took it.

After dinner, a note in their hotel door requested they call police right away.

That's when it was real," Knox said.

Authorities are now analyzing the bone to see if it belongs to Holloway.

And if it is, Eileen Beaulieu said she want's Halloway's mother to know they took care of it respectfully.

"I'd want her to know that we took care of it. We treated it with dignity," Beaulieu said.

"I began to think of the family," said Kathy Knox. "You know, if this is Natalee maybe the family can have some closure."

And if not, at least, perhaps answers for someone.

Fighting back tears, Kathy Knox said, "I don't even know the family, but if my child was missing I can't even imagine being as strong as she has been."

"We all hope very much that this puts an end to somebody's heartache," Gil Beaulieu said.

If you might recall, my entire point when Beth went to the prison was not Beth's right to confront Joran and get answers - I will always say that's her right. My point at the time was that Joran may try to kill her and he could strangle her in a matter of moments.

I also said that Godfather Peter R is quite capable of handling himslef, but Joran was with in arms reach and could do some serious damage by the time he would be restrained.

That was the only reason I thought going to the prison was a bad idea - and Joran always proves me right.

I have some holiday wishes for the Sloots. That they all die painful miserable deaths - each and everyone of them. I hope that the pain is long lasting, and feels never ending.

An update on the Superior Offshore Int'l Class Action lawsuit:  

Louis Schaefer, Jim Mermis, R. Joshua Koch and their co-defendents (including Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan Securities) have settled the case out of court.  There will be no trial. 

The settlement agreement was evidently reached on October 14, 2010, though they've been working on it since June.  The final settlement has not yet been filed with the court. 

Interesting timing considering Tim Miller's recent claims as it relates to Schaefer and a resuming of the ocean search on short notice.

Birmingham, Al (WIAT) Joran van der Sloot isn’t the most notorious prisoner in the Peruvian penal system. These days, he isn’t even the most notorious Dutch prisoner in a Peruvian prison. That dubious honor goes to Jason staling Conquet, a Dutch national imprisoned on a variety of drug related charges.

So how does Conquet get more publicity than van der Sloot who is accused of killing a 21 year old Peruvian student after she found material about Natalee Holloway on his laptop?

Conquet is accused of killing his girl friend after a sex visit in his prison cell. Since May 2009 Conquet has been in what Dutch website Nieuwsblad.be calls the” second most dangerous in Latin America (after the Santa Maria Jail in Mexico)” Lurigancho is a few kilometers from van der Sloot’s Castro Castro prison.

Peruvian prison officials, who are already being investigated over the visit by Beth Holloway and a Dutch TV crew to Castro Castro, are now dealing with this scenario: Conquet is accused of strangling his girl friend, 22-year-old Leslie Paredes Silva, during an argument after the two had had sex in his prison cell. Conquet told investigators Paredes Silva had insulted him and confessed to other relationships.

Conquet apparently wrapped the body in a blanket and hid it under a bed in his cell….a criminal master plan that worked just fine until the body began to decompose. At that point he’s accused of using brick and mortar from a prison construction project to brick her into the prison walls.  There was still enough stench from the decomposing corpse that the body was eventually discovered.

Sound pretty incredible? Prison officials say there are at least 14,000 people a day passing through the prison and it’s impossible for the guards to properly monitor and control. After the discovery of the corpse, the Peruvian police searched the entire prison finding large amounts of weapons, mobile phones and drugs.

Meanwhile, down the road at Castro Castro, Joran van der Sloot is still awaiting word his appeal to have his murder confession thrown out of court. His lawyers charge both coercion and procedural improprieties to his confession he murdered 21 year old Stephany Flores after she found material about Natalee Holloway on his computer. Flores corpse was found in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room five years to the day of Natalee Holloway's disappearance on a high school trip to Aruba.

Van der Sloot is still considered the prime suspect in the disappearance of the Mountain Brook teen but has never been charged by Aruban authorities.

There was an international stir in the Natalee case a few weeks ago when tourists found a jawbone on an Aruban beach but forensic tests in The Netherlands found no match to Natalee's dental records.
