TV shows highlight Geezer Bandit and McStay family mysteries

SAN DIEGO — Two of San Diego County’s biggest mysteries — the identity of the Geezer Bandit and the location of the missing McStay family — will be in the national spotlight in the coming days in an effort to generate new leads.

On Saturday, Fox’s “America’s Most Wanted” will profile the Geezer, the geriatric-looking bank robber who has hit 12 banks and remains at large.

And on Monday, Investigation Discovery’s “Disappeared” will feature the McStays, the Fallbrook family of four who vanished from their home Feb. 4.

Both cases have captured the public’s interest over the past year and resulted in intensive law enforcement investigations.

The Geezer Bandit

The prolific bank robber who sometimes carries an oxygen tank during heists has struck 10 San Diego County banks, as well as one in Temecula and another in Bakersfield, between Aug. 28, 2009, and Nov. 12, 2010.

He often brandishes a handgun. FBI investigators are exploring the possibility that the Geezer is not old, but wearing an elaborate disguise.

A reward of up to $20,000 is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

The “America’s Most Wanted” episode will air 9 p.m. Saturday on KSWB-FOX, Channel 5, followed by the FBI’s local version of the show, “San Diego’s Most Wanted.”

The McStays

The family of four appears to have vanished suddenly, leaving behind a carton of eggs on the kitchen counter and their child’s asthma medicine in their Isuzu Trooper, which was found abandoned in a San Ysidro parking lot near the Mexico border crossing.

No one has seen or heard from them since. Bank, cell phone and e-mail activity stopped the day they vanished.

Missing are Joseph McStay, 40; his wife, Summer, 43; and sons Gianni, 4, and Joseph Jr., 3.

Possible breaks in the case that led investigators to Mexico were never confirmed.

While the case remains open, authorities say all leads have dried up. Veteran sheriff’s investigators say they’ve never seen a case quite like it.

Crews from “Disappeared” came to San Diego County in September to film interviews with detectives and family. The show will air 10 p.m. Monday and again at 1 a.m. Tuesday. Investigation Discovery can be found on the following channels: Cox 104, DIRECTV 285, Time Warner 214 and DISH Network 192.

“Someone had to have seen something,” said Joseph McStay’s brother, Mike. “You don’t go missing for almost a year, and people don’t just disappear off the map. It just doesn’t happen.”

The family is also preparing to highlight the case on Lifetime’s “Vanished.” Host Beth Holloway, the mother of Natalee Holloway, who went missing in Aruba in 2005, is expected to meet with Mike McStay next weekend. The case has already been profiled on “America’s Most Wanted.”

“There have been so many dead-end roads on this entire case, it’d be nice to put some closure to it,” McStay said.

I love lists.

Specifically, those end-of-the-year, beginning-of-a-new-one lists. What's in, what's out. What were the biggest stories of last year, what to watch for in the coming one. Which celebs went through which stations of their particular crosses: who married, divorced, got arrested, gave birth, adopted or died.

I love 'em for their found poetry — all these disparate events and people, tossed together simply by accident of the calendar. This is particularly true of news stories, I found, when I asked one of our baltimoresun.com gurus to find which articles on the website got the most hits in 2010.

Most clicked-on doesn't mean most important, of course, and some stories get a big boost because they're linked to other sites or come up on popular searches (say, for long-missing Aruba vacationer Natalee Holloway).

Is anyone watching HLN? It's a run through of the news as it occurred in Natalee's case. It's actually really interesting.........

It's weird how early it was reported that one of the suspects allegedly confessed that Natalee's body had been dumped in a swamp on the island. That happened when the security guards were released.

Did they say dumped in the swamp?  I remember that one of the suspects was leading ALE to the body and I assumed it was near the Lighthouse.  I thought Dave H headed towards the lighthouse that night? 

Yes. They specifically said her body had been dumped in a swamp on the island. They didn't say which suspect had confess, but K2 and Joran were all being questioned.

Klaas? I had also forgotten that fishermen had reported that a white Suzuki had been on the beach that night, during the time frame, near the huts and that a vehicle of that description had been confiscated at the VDS house. The fishermen said the car was there for 30-40 minutes and it was "unusual".

If anyone is watching, are they in the water near where the crab trap was found?

2010 was a year full of headlines. Between Cam Newton, Gabe Watson, and Larry Langford, it's a year we won't soon forget…

     In January, the Crimson Tide kicked off the year, hailing a historic milestone that led Alabama to the national championship, defeating Texas, 37 to 21.

      Also, in Hoover, a massive fire at the Days Inn killed four college students. Investigators believe it all started with burning incense lit by the hotel's maintenance man.

     In March, Mountain Brook attorney, Major Bashinsky, topped our newscasts after he reportedly staged his own death to look like murder. In reality, he'd committed suicide. His body was later found in a pond at the Highland Golf Course.

      In April, Birmingham’s former mayor, Larry Langford, swapped his business suit for an orange jumpsuit, kick-starting a 15-year prison sentence for various charges, including bribery and conspiracy.

     Just days later, a coastal catastrophe ensued… BP's deepwater horizon exploded, killing eleven men and creating the biggest oil spill in U.S. history. Three months later, the leak was capped, but its existence is still wreaking havoc on the Gulf Coast economy.

     On the five year anniversary of Natalee Holloway’s disappearance, the man accused of killing her, allegedly killed Peruvian student Stephany Flores. Joran van der Sloot is later charged with extorting money from Holloway’s parents.

      Over the summer, we witnessed an exodus of sorts in Alabama’s casinos. Governor Riley's Anti-Gambling Task Force paved the way for raids across the state, including Greenetrack and VictoryLand. It created the seizure of thousands of gaming machines and the loss of hundreds of jobs.

     All the politics surrounding gaming eventually led to the indictment of eleven people, for allegedly buying votes to bring bingo back to 'Bama. Among those arrested were four state senators and two casino owners.

      Politically, 2010 is a year that will go down in history. For the first time in over 130 years, the GOP gained control of the Alabama Legislature.  In addition, voters elected Doctor Robert Bentley as our new governor.

      But he wasn't the only one making the headlines... Gabe Watson stole the show in December, returning to Alabama after an 18-month manslaughter sentence in Australia. Watson is accused of killing his wife Tina while scuba diving on their honeymoon in 2003.

     And, Cam Newton became a household name. The Auburn quarterback led his team to an undefeated season, but not without scrutiny... The NCAA questioned his recruitment after an alleged pay-for-play deal. Fortunately for him, he was deemed eligible, and soon after, named the 76th Heisman trophy winner.

My youngest son Sebastian who was playing at a friends house was due to be dropped off at home around that time. Joran, with my permission, took over my seat because he had been eliminated earlier. We had agreed that he would call me after the tournament, in order for me to come and pick him up. He did indeed call me and at approximately 23.00 hour I picked him up near the Mc Donalds in Palm Beach with my red Suzuki. We drove home and I went to bed.

It appears that there is a new witness that has come forward that has placed Joran Van der Sloot in wet and muddy clothing out at 4:00am on 5/30/05. The 48 year old Aruban witness also places Paulus Van der Sloot at the scene picking up Joran in a red jeep.

Aruban police search home of Dutch teen

Aruban authorities spent several hours Wednesday searching the house of the Dutch youth in the upscale Noord neighborhood. They carried away items in paper bags and cardboard boxes and towed away a blue sport-utility vehicle and a red Jeep.

The search came a day after police combed a mangrove swamp near Holloway's hotel. Police suspended that search after pumping water from a drainage pond.

The determination was made using Holloway’s dental records, according to a statement issued late this morning by the Aruba Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Aruban Solicitor General Taco Stein said shortly after the announcement that they could determine quickly that the bone wasn’t Holloway’s — the jawbone found on the beach had a wisdom tooth still attached and Holloway’s dental records showed the teen had had her wisdom teeth removed.

(CNN) -- If the human jawbone that washed up on a beach in Aruba late last year wasn't Natalee Holloway's, whose was it?

Authorities continue to investigate. They say the jawbone is human and likely was from a Caucasian. It held a single tooth.

Ten people have vanished while vacationing in the Caribbean in the last 15 years, according to the Aruba Missing Persons website. One of them was Amy Lynn Bradley, then 23, who disappeared 12 years ago while on a vacation cruise with her family.

The Bradleys' complaint that that no one looked closely at their daughter's disappearance echoes the complaints during the early days of the Natalee Holloway investigation.

Holloway's parents also complained of a lack of urgency by the authorities when she disappeared during a senior class trip to Aruba in May 2005. To this day, authorities have no resolution as to what happened to Holloway five years ago.

(CNN) -- If the human jawbone that washed up on a beach in Aruba late last year wasn't Natalee Holloway's, whose was it?

Authorities continue to investigate. They say the jawbone is human and likely was from a Caucasian. It held a single tooth.

Ten people have vanished while vacationing in the Caribbean in the last 15 years, according to the Aruba Missing Persons website. One of them was Amy Lynn Bradley, then 23, who disappeared 12 years ago while on a vacation cruise with her family.

Bradley and her mother, father and younger brother were on board the cruise ship "Rhapsody of the Seas." The ship had just left Oranjestad, Aruba, and was heading to Curacao, in the Netherlands Antilles, on the day she went missing -- March 24, 1998.

Bradley left her cabin early that morning, barefoot and carrying her cigarettes and lighter. It appears that she vanished while the ship was docking in Curacao.

My friends are the tourists that found the jawbone and I recently asked her specifically if she remembered the molar being in the wisdom tooth position of the jawbone.  She confirmed to me that it was a wisdom tooth.  (I personally could not remember if it was the last molar or not.) Because she is remembering the molar to be a wisdome tooth, I feel pretty confident that the jawbone that they found was indeed the one that was passed on to the Dutch authorities for the investigation to compare with Natalee's dental records. 

I wonder if Amy Lynn Bradley's dental records have been sent for comparison?  I think I remember this girls name being talked about on these boards too.

The jawbone find was big news.  I would think the FBI would be responsible for that communication and the transmission of Amy's records electronically, just as Natalee's were.  There has been no news of this, that I am aware of.  Yes, Amy Bradley's case is very well noted and has been discussed here and elsewhere.

I tried to go back to the original postings to quote but the "quote" button/link kept disappearing so I went to the Waterford CT Police site and reposted the links above.  My co-worker already has the tickets so I'm all set.  She did say that there were only 200 seats left and that was at Christmas time. If I am remembering correctly, the capacity is 1500 at the Waterford High School Auditorium.  I'm just reposting as a reminder for those that may be able to go.

I don't know anything about how the FBI works but I would think that they would have begun the process of investigating other missing persons cases and comparing records.  I haven't see anything at all since they determined the jawbone wasn't Natalee's.   :(

I'm a bit clumsy at these at these boards but I'm getting a little better.  Yes, for the sake of closure for the family I hope Amy's records are being compared.  The writeup at CNN quoted the parents as saying "We believe that our daughter is alive, but being held captive by someone."  I agree, this must be an ongoing nightmare for the parents to not know.... :(

Parents of missing Chesterfield woman skeptical that jawbone found in Aruba is their daughter's

The parents of a Chesterfield County woman who disappeared 12 years ago while on a Caribbean cruise with family are doubtful that a jawbone recently discovered on an Aruba beach belonged to their daughter.

But just to make sure, Iva and Ron Bradley have provided the FBI with Amy Lynn Bradley's dental records. The Bradleys still believe that their daughter was abducted by someone aboard the ship during the family's vacation in March 1998. They also adamantly believe that Amy is still alive and being held captive.

"We have provided Amy's dental records because we follow every single lead of any size or nature," Iva Bradley said Monday in a brief telephone interview. "We're just doing what parents would do in following up and providing records. But we don't believe that's Amy's jawbone."

In late November, law-enforcement authorities determined through forensic testing that the jawbone did not belong to Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, who disappeared in 2005 during a senior class trip to Aruba.

The piece of jawbone, which contained a wisdom tooth and likely was from a Caucasian, was found by an American tourist near the Phoenix Hotel, a resort on the western side of the island. It had washed up on the beach.

The Bradleys have been led to believe that the bone "is very, very, very old," Iva Bradley said.

"Aruba has over 200 archeological sites, and they've got all of their graves above ground," she added.

Amy Bradley was 23 when she disappeared from the cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas early on March 24, 1998, as the ship docked at the Dutch island of Curacao after a short overnight run from Aruba.

The Bradleys believe that their daughter is still alive based on several reported sightings of their daughter over the years. The last was on March 1, 2005, when a woman reported she saw Amy in a Barbados restaurant restroom. "She was actually able to tell a lady in a restroom her name and where she was from," Iva Bradley said.

"For people that don't have any idea what it's like to be in a Third World country, and under (someone else's) control due to fear, it's not so easy just to go to a phone," Iva Bradley said. "We feel like she's either in human trafficking, or some type of gun trafficking, or the two involved."

The Visit Aruba website lists 10 people who have vanished while staying or vacationing in the Caribbean in the past 15 years.

Giants owners Steve Tisch and John Mara have teamed up with Jets owner Woody Johnson and are kicking around a plan to buy a controlling stake in Italian soccer team AS Roma.

The trio reportedly made an offer recently to buy the beleaguered team nearly three years after George Soros and New York lawyer Joe Tacopina put in an unsuccessful bid to buy the club, the Italian newspaper Il Manifesto reported today.

The newspaper reported that the dollar amount has not been made public as both sides try to hammer out a deal.

The Giants and Jets are co-owners of the New Meadowlands Stadium, which opened last year, and both teams worked together last year to bring Super Bowl XLVIII to the stadium in 2014.

However, a Jets source told The Post that Johnson is not involved in an offer and had no idea if there was involvement from the Giants.

An AS Roma spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

One of Italy's most popular teams, Roma is currently in fifth place in the 20-team Serie A standings and features former Italy striker Francesco Totti and Brazilian forward Adriano.

In 2009, Forbes magazine estimated the value of the team at $308 million.

AS Roma, which was founded in 1927, has won the Serie A title three times in its history, most recently in 2001.

Italian group Italpetroli holds a controlling stake in AS Roma, but creditor UniCredit de facto controls the group.

Russian media had reported in September that LUKOIL Vice President Leonid Fedun was interested in purchasing a controlling stake, but the company had no comment at the time.

Italian pharmaceutical magnate Francesco Angelini never put forward concrete plans for a takeover bid after saying he wanted to buy a majority stake in the club.

The club -- known in Italy simply as Roma -- has been seeking an outside buyer since last summer.

Unlike England's Premier League, where American ownership of major teams has become common, Italy's pro squads are owned by Italians, so the purchase by Tisch, Mara and Johnson would be the first of its kind.

The team plays its games at the Olympic Stadium, opened in 1930 and rehabbed for the 1990 World Cup, and like the Jets and Giants, shares the 73,000-seat venue with city rivals SS Lazio.

AS Roma club officials have said that they are interested in building a stadium and that new owners would have to commit to such a plan should a takeover occur.

In October, the Boston Red Sox, owned by by New England Sports Ventures, purchased English club Liverpool for $476 million -- the latest move by an American company to buy a soccer team in Europe.

Can you tell a person's race from his or her skull?

Can your jawbone identify your race?
Law enforcement officials are trying to ascertain the owner of a jawbone that washed up on a beach in Aruba last November. They've ruled out missing Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway. Now they're considering Amy Bradley, who disappeared 12 years ago on a Caribbean cruise. The DNA is too damaged to be useful, but investigators say the bone likely belonged to a Caucasian woman. In the absence of DNA, can you really determine race from a jawbone?

Probably not. Forensic anthropologists try to infer the ancestry, gender, and age of human remains by measuring their dimensions and observing their features with the naked eye. The jawbone is one of the more useful bones in the body, as researchers have compiled a number of mandibular traits (PDF) that they think differ slightly between races. For example, if you place an Asian jawbone on a table, the bottom of it will likely maintain contact with the tabletop all the way around. African and Caucasian mandibles, in contrast, tend to undulate, or rise and fall along the lower border. The gonia—that's the area beneath your ears where the jawbone turns upward—generally curve more sharply in an Asian jaw. People of African descent often have slightly curled surfaces on the rear edges of their jaws, whereas European jaws are more likely to have a flatter edge. (Take a look at this picture.) But all of these traits are imprecise indicators. It's impossible to identify a person's ancestry definitively from a single bone.
Investigators can also take bone measurements using calipers, then input the data into a University of Tennessee database containing a reference library of measurements from more than 1,800 bones of known ancestry, age, and gender. The program will determine whether the mystery bone falls within the typical ranges for various racial groups. It's pretty hard to hazard a reliable guess with one or two measurements, since the ranges overlap. But if a series of measurements for a whole skull, or an entire skeleton, tend to fall more comfortably within one range than another, the forensic anthropologist can make a determination.


Racial classification is an inexact science, if that's even the right word for it. Forensic anthropologists never make definitive ancestry pronouncements. They say a bone is "consistent with" European ancestry or "likely" of Asian ancestry. And practitioners say it takes years of experience to achieve mastery, since you have to see piles and piles of disembodied mandibles to be able to recognize the sometimes subtle differences among them. (Although one study (PDF) has suggested that the grizzled veterans of forensic anthropology are no better at surmising race than their bright-eyed protégés.)

The practice of inferring race from bones is also somewhat controversial. While today's forensic anthropologists don't like to talk about it, the discipline has its roots in the pseudoscientific 19th-century practice of using skull measurements to prove Caucasian intellectual superiority. The methodology has improved since then. When researchers develop a hypothesis about racial variation, they conduct blind tests on hundreds or thousands of skulls of known ancestry to test its reliability. They also test their own consistency, looking at the same skulls several times in different orders to make sure they usually make the same call on its structures and shapes.
There are people who think even the modern techniques are bunk. They argue that more physical variability exists between individuals of the same race than between races and point out that less than 15 percent of physical variation can be attributed to race. In addition, marriage between people of differing ancestries has become so common that forensic racial determinations can actually hinder an investigation. If someone had his mother's African jaw and his father's light skin, investigators would be sent out looking for the wrong person, since his neighbors might have considered him white.

The plane used, was a regular on the island, and since that departure nor the pilot nor the plane ever returned...So the flight left legally, and the people left legally as well. Just one did not enter the island legally....so, draw your own conclusions...

Vivian Wever I always entertained the theory that she left 'legally". Why? Because when her mother came to Aruba and went to Natalee's hotel room she stated: Natalee's passsport was neatly on a table. This statement bothered me. Usually girls or nobody for that mather leaves their passport on a table while they are still going out the night before. And most importantly: the passport is too obvious placed to confuse that she did NOT leave the island. While we know she could leave with another passport or ID. I dont think it is extremely difficult in the US to get false IDs. The passport always appeared "planted" to me. it was mentioned various times: she did NOT leave the island because her passport is here!!

Renée Gielen ‎@Vivian, as far as I know. 1. At the time it was not necessary to enter and leave Aruba with a passport, coming from US. However, all the kids had their passports with them, and as mentioned in documents, the chaperones held the passports. 2. If the chaperones held the passports, how come that Natalee's was on her bed? Maybe she needed it, because it is said that she withdrew money the day before she disappeared. And then, as I found out, she left the island with a different passport. And even that is not that strange, because she may have applied for an adult passport before she left, which left her with 2 passports. Can you still follow?

Listen, you are trying, it would seem, to convince people that Joran is innocent but the fact is that he most probably murdered Flores and that makes the assumption of innocence very, very slim. 2. You also fail to acknowledge, it seems, to remember that big screw up of the trio Van der Straaten, Karin Janssen and Paulus Van der Sloot the (R.I.P.) with regard to the arrest of those two poor black security guards and -4.- trying to impede the lawyer Lejuez access to them while -5- at the same time NOT arresting the three suspects (Joran and the Kalpoe brothers) after they told LIES about dropping Natalee of at the Holiday Inn!! 6. That was very bad and indicates a cover up as well as rampant in fighting in the prosecution's office. 7. The memo of June 10 2005 (if I recall correctly) sent from the Court of Appeals in Willemstad forbidding any judge stationed in Aruba was not complete. It should of ALSO have forbidden any prosecutor (Karin Janssen) working in Aruba to touch that case since Paulus Van der Sloot worked for a very long time at the Attorney General's office (maybe you know exactly for how long?).

Although it might seem difficult, every case has to be evaluated on its own merits/evidence. Nor does his late father, or Karin Jansen. That is what I found out, but we can agree to disagree. I investigated the US side of this story, and came to some shocking conclusions.
Sorry to sound stubborn. I would love to explain, maybe I can do a lecture on Aruba, with all mayor US media present.
This is all about trial by media, not by facts.
IMO It is the other way around, when the NH case will be solved, the Peru case will be much more clear. And the very important role of FBI as well.

For me the important part is that what happened here NEVER happens again. I'm referring to the "imperfect investigation" of course. Whatever happens now to the main suspect is not so relevant for Aruba anymore. That's what we call "poetic justice" or "Karma". Now, the "hot potatoe" is in the hands of the minister of foreign affairs of The Netherlands who doubles as the representative of foreign affairs of the Kingdom. Let them handle it.

Vivian Wever Within 24 hours of the case I had already concluded that it would be a difficult unsolveable case. Why? Because it is highly unusual ( I follow a lot of true crime cases) that all the witnesses or last persons to be with the person who disappeared left the island, and could not be interviewed. What makes it even weirder it that these kids had graduated from high school so they were going to college. Having studied in college in the US myself I know that kids leave as far from their home as their parents can afford to go to college. So they would be scatterd allover the US. With the very limited means of our country and without knowing who they are they could not be interviewed.

Ok, lemmie give one angle; when Natalee went missing the Aruban born Attorney General was in Holland because of legal problems of her son so the only one 'at the helm' of the prosecutor's office in Aruba was Karin Jansen who was the head prosecutor (and good friend of the Van der Sloots?) stationed in Aruba for a 3 or 5 years, remember? Now, you can try and convince yourself about chain of command etc. but everybady knows about the bad blood and in fighting in the prosecutor's office. So, when Natalee went missing Karin Jansen 'did the damage' or do you think that she followed instructions of her 'boss', the attorney general Croes Fernandes Pedra? She got her orders from The Hague directly! Everybody knows that (except you maybe?). Maybe you are also oblivios to the fact that when the attorney general came back to Aruba after a week or so all freggin' hell broke lose in there. Remember? However, it was already too late.

I love how they always blame everyone leaving the island so the poor ALE couldn't conduct their investigation. Yet, we have seen the statements, from Natalee's friends/travel mates, given within two days of the disappearance. The statements from island "witnesses" (Carlos and Charlee's, the hotel) were dated later than the friends. What makes them think that if the kids had stayed, on island, that they would have been interviewed sooner?

All I can say is that there is a reason,, those posting, have become so successful in their careers. At least they have each other. They certainly are not ready for prime time.  The only one with a lick of sense is Yarzagaray.

"Tell me what's going on," I say in a voice much firmer than the one I usually hear coming from my mouth.

She simply says, "Natalee didn't show up this morning to get on the plane."

OM took notice of the documentary made by the journalist Renee Gielen. According to the OM it was an intriguing compilation of the facts. Only on one point though, OM does not share the reconstruction of the facts by Renee Gielen.
Because of the documentary the OM asked the Aruba Airport Authority to provide exact information on the arrival of the private Jet that brought ms. Beth Holloway to Aruba, information that was never investigated prior to this program.

The AAA confirmed in writing and from data from computers that the jet arrived on May 30, 2005 at 21:57. Based on that the OM concludes that Gielen's suggestions that Beth Holloway arrived earlier is not correct and has no base.

The OM concludes that Gielen does not have knowledge of the dossier of this case in the investigation of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Having the dossier of the case, the OM is of opinion that the direction the investigation is going is still the right one. The conclussions of Renee Gielen did not have an affect on it.

Kyle Kingman:  I took the proportions of the body form from the head, to shoulder, to a 90 degree angle which I believed to be the hem line of Natalee's skirt. I then took those proportions and matched them to the photo of Natalee with what she was last seen wearing. The proportions matched within an inch from head, to shoulder, to skirt line. Based on this comparison and with what we believed we saw in the Dec 29th video, Tim Miller contacted the family and told them the 99.9% comment. I told Tim not to do anything until we have forensic results back after the site is processed.

Jan 7th we sampled the contents and in my opinion we found the skirt under the sand along with the other items The blue fabric was found right where the skirt is pictured. If it isn't her, it will forever haunt me as a major cosmic WTF.

The purpose of this research is to analyze what effect the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an American teenage girl, had on the tourism demand of Aruba. A review of cases will reveal if personal harm (loss), in combination with media attention, can have an impact on the tourism demand of a location and therefore also give an indication of what can be expected for the case of Aruba. Possible future research might be able to obtain a better model if the marketing and
promotions budget were to be included.  Due to the lack of cooperation this was not the case.
However this data might be relevant for establishing a more accurate relation between Aruba’s
tourism demand and the impact of the Natalee Holloway incident. Additionally, marketing and
promotions budget undoubtedly have an effect on the tourism demand itself, which could

Future tourism policies might want to look at the best way in which such incidents could be

As you know, school has been canceled today. The exam schedule at Waterford High School will push back a day.

And second to the great tragedy of losing her is if we fail to learn from what has happened.  I could be any parent in the world.  And no parent should ever go through this experience.  Natalee could be anyone's daughter.  And in these thoughts a new path is made clear.  There is something I can do.  Many people reached out to us, and I can now reach back to them.  It might be too late to save Natalee, but it's not too late to save others.  And it's time now to make good on my pledge to stand before high-school and college students, law enforcement professinals, victims' rights groups, travelers of all ages, and anyone interested in personal safety to share Natalee's story and our hard lessons, so that others might learn from them.

Waterford - Beth Holloway, the mother of Natalee Holloway, the 18-year-old woman from Alabama who went missing in Aruba in May 2005, is expected to impart a message of hope, faith and personal safety when she speaks today at Waterford High School.

Waterford Youth Services, which books one or two inspirational speakers a year to address young people and others in the region, is sponsoring the 7 p.m. talk.

"We usually have an athlete or something like that," Youth Services Director Dani Gorman said. "But we thought Beth Holloway would be something different."

Gorman said she saw Holloway speak at a gathering of law enforcement officials and thought she would be good to bring to Waterford.

"(Holloway) speaks frequently to police and to kids about her daughter's story and the lessons she learned," Gorman said. "She's a fighter."

The Natalee Holloway case, which became a staple of cable news programs in the summer of 2005, is unresolved.

On May 30, 2005, six days after she graduated from high school, Holloway did not return home after a vacation with friends and was reported missing.

She was reportedly last seen outside a restaurant in Oranjestad, the Aruban capital. The main suspect, Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch national, was arrested and then released during the investigation. Van der Sloot has since been charged with the murder of a female university student in Lima, Peru.

In response to her daughter's disappearance, Holloway founded International Safe Travels Foundation, which works to raise awareness about overseas travel and laws.

Kathy Drenga of Preston, a former member of Scared Monkeys, a group that helps to raise awareness of missing persons cases, said Holloway often talks to young people and parents about legal systems in foreign countries.

"Things are not handled in the same way as they are in the United States," Drenga said.
