Cops: Deaths could be work of serial killer

Updated: December 14, 2010 12:06 PM

Police are investigating whether the deaths of four people whose remains were found along a stretch of beach in Babylon came at the hands of a serial killer, the Suffolk police commissioner said Tuesday.

The bodies - three of which were discovered in thick underbrush Monday, two days after another set of skeletal remains was found nearby - were tossed from a vehicle possibly as long as a year and a half to two years ago, Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said at a news conference Tuesday at the frigid, windswept scene near Ocean Parkway.

Asked if there was a serial killer dumping bodies, Dormer said, "We're looking at that - that we could have a serial killer."

VIDEO: More bodies found

Two of the bodies are female, Dormer said. He asked that anyone with information on suspicious cars in the area call the county's CrimeStoppers line, 800-220-TIPS.

Dormer said police are not sure if one of the bodies is that of missing Jersey City, N.J., woman Shonnan Gilbert, 24, whom police have said was a prostitute.

Dormer said Gilbert was known to have been traveling to Fire Island to meet a client before she disappeared in May.

Police will be interviewing Gilbert's alleged pimp and client from that day, Dormer said. He would not identify them or give other details. Also, a Maine detective said Tuesday he is waiting to hear from Suffolk authorities on whether one of the bodies is related to his missing persons case.

Det. Donald Blatchford of the Scarborough, Maine, police said he had talked with Suffolk police Monday and was expecting to hear if one of the bodies was that of Scarborough resident Megan Waterman, 22, who was last seen at a Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge on June 6.

Dormer said police have no suspects in the case.

The area where the bodies were found "is close enough to be of interest," Blatchford said.

Blatchford said he has been in regular contact with Suffolk authorities since Waterman disappeared. She and her boyfriend had traveled from Scarborough to Long Island after placing an ad for an escort on Craigslist.

Blatchford said Suffolk police already have DNA evidence in the Waterman case from belongings left behind in the Hauppauge hotel.

Blatchford said he hasn't received any indication from Suffolk police that Waterman may be among the victims found on the beach.

Blatchford said he has made some progress recently in the case, but could not elaborate without compromising the case.

On Monday night, Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky of Suffolk's Homicide Squad said a missing-person report had been made in May for Gilbert, who he said worked as a prostitute. He said she met a client on Craigslist and arranged a meeting on Fire Island, he said. She traveled with another man there to meet the client, where she was last seen on May 1, he said.

A Jersey City police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed a missing-person report was filed for Gilbert and said detectives had done "extensive work" on the file.

"They're in contact with Long Island police right now," the source said Monday night, declining to elaborate.

Neighbors at Gilbert's modest apartment building on Christopher Columbus Drive in Jersey City said Tuesday morning they didn't know her.

Jose Delarosa, who lives on the fourth floor, said Tuesday he sometimes could hear Gilbert quarreling with her boyfriend, but "never anything bad."

Ruby Aparicio, who lives on the first floor, said she'd seen Gilbert a couple times around the building, but they had never spoken. Her third-floor apartment is now occupied by a family that said they moved in three months ago and had never met her.

A Jersey City police spokesman, Lt. Edgar Martinez, did not respond to messages Monday night.

Pelkofsky acknowledged the strong possibility that the four people are homicide victims dumped there by the same person or people.

"Common sense tells us it's not a coincidence," he said.

All four bodies were found within a quarter-mile of one another on the north side of the parkway.

The first set of remains were discovered Saturday by a canine unit searching in the area on a missing-persons case as well as for training purposes.

The remains in the underbrush, were about 6 or 8 feet from the road's shoulder.

Detectives and other police officers Monday searched a stretch of more than a mile through the day on both sides of the parkway and a median, and officers and a cadaver dog found a second decomposed body about 500 feet from the initial body, also in heavy underbrush near the roadway. Two others were found a short distance away.

The area is near a strip of Ocean Parkway with beachfront facing the Atlantic on one side, and marshlands, thick brush and a chain of small islands on the bay side between South Oyster Bay and the Robert Moses Causeway.

Two of the three bodies found Monday were wrapped in burlap, a source familiar with the investigation said.

The skeletal remains all appear to have been there at least a month, but "some appear to be have been there longer than others," Pelkofsky said. The badly decomposed state of the remains means all will need to be identified through dental records or DNA.

A cadaver dog will search the beach Tuesday, Dormer said.

Identifying the bodies could take weeks because of their conditions, Dormer said. No paper identification, such as drivers licenses, has been found, he said.

The New York City medical examiner as well as the Suffolk medical examiner are working to identify the bodies, Dormer said.

A special meeting was scheduled for Tuesday with Suffolk detectives, the district attorney's office, a member of the county crime lab team and a representative of the county medical examiner's office to go over what has been found so far and to put together a plan for identifying the bodies.

Bodies found on NY beach may link to murders of Atlantic City prostitutes

An apparent serial killer left four bodies “displayed” in marshes along Gilgo Beach on Long Island. The homicides are eerily reminiscent of the murders of four Atlantic City Prostitutes in Nov., 2006.
The first body in N.Y., was discovered Saturday by a Suffolk County K-9 officer and his dog “Blue.” The pair were on a training exercise and looking for a missing person along the beach on Oak Island, which is adjacent to Gilgo Beach.
The subsequent investigation on Sunday and Monday turned up the skeletal remains of three more people. The search for more bodies is being conducted today.
Yellow crime flags are planted in the area where the bodies and body parts were discovered along Ocean Parkway on the remote beach just south of Fire Island.
The murders appear to have occurred at different times during November according to the degrees of decomposition, police said. More accurate information will be available after the medical examiner completes his investigation.
November is the same month the murders of four Atlantic City Prostitutes occurred four years ago. The killer of Kim Raffo, Tracy Ann Roberts, Barbara Breidor and Molly Dilts was never found.
The two most notable clues given to the public in the Atlantic City case was the fact that the women were found without their shoes, leading investigators and the public to wonder if the killer had a shoe fetish or took them as a trophy.
The other clue was that the killer may have been driving a pale green van. Others described a pale white or yellow van.
Although the bodies on Gilgo Beach have not yet been identified, one woman from Jersey City, N.J., has been missing since May 1, 2010 and grabbed the attention of investigators.
Alleged prostitute Shonnan Gilbert, 24, advertised on Craig’s List and was driven to Fire Island by a male companion to meet an alleged client, according to police.

Gilbert was never seen or heard from again. She was reported missing on May 1, 2010.
The Jersey City and Suffolk County Police are now working together to determine if Gilbert is among the dead, according to the Suffolk County Police.
The news of the bodies on Long Island slowly trickled down to southern New Jersey Tuesday morning. Officers from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Task Force are now seeking information from the Suffolk County Police.
Information may shed light on the Atlantic City murder case, which has grown cold over the last four years. Only one man grabbed the attention of the public and police at the time of the murders. He was never charged with the crime or even named a suspect.
Terry Oleson was a handyman who worked at the Golden Key Motel in 2006. The bodies were found displayed behind the motel. Oleson was subsequently arrested and charged with invasion of privacy for secretly filming the minor child of girlfriend after a search warrant of his home yielded the video.
Many people in the community assumed he was the murderer after a prostitute claimed she knew him and that he boasted of killing people. The woman later recanted her statement and said she misidentified Oleson after seeing another man on the street, who she claimed committed the murders.
Oleson’s attorney James Leonard said in a phone interview Tuesday that he knew his client has never traveled to Long Island. He said if the murders are connected it will finally clear his client’s name.
“This is good news for us,” said Leonard. “I know Mr. Olsen’s whereabouts and he has never been near New York.
Leonard said his client is not a well traveled person.
People who are missing loved ones are now waiting for the identification of the victims found on the beach. The process will be slow and painstaking due to the state of the remains. Dental records and DNA will be needed for positive identification, according to police.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates throughout the day.

With 4 bodies, NY cops eye possible serial killer
 1 hr 1 min ago
BABYLON, N.Y. – A serial killer may have abandoned four bodies, each apparently dumped from a vehicle, along a desolate, wind-swept stretch of highway not far from Long Island's Jones Beach, police said Tuesday.

Police found the badly decomposed remains, feet from the roadway, near Cedar Beach as they searched for a missing prostitute last known to be headed to Fire Island, said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer. At least two of the bodies are female, but authorities haven't determined the gender of the other two, Dormer said.

Investigators were taking DNA samples and examining dental records to try to identify them.

"We're looking at that — that we could have a serial killer," Dormer said in response to a reporter's question.

The beach is about three miles from where the missing woman was headed when she disappeared May 1, but Dormer said there was no indication yet that hers was one of the four bodies.

Dormer said the four appeared to have been killed elsewhere and then brought to the site, a strip of land less than 1,000 yards wide that divides the Great South Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The roadway connects the landmark Jones Beach State Park with several state and town-run beaches to its east, including Cedar Beach.

The remains were badly decomposed, but appeared to have been dumped over an 18-month period, Dormer said. The first set of remains were found Saturday as police were following up on a missing-person report. The three other bodies were found Monday.

Jersey City, N.J., police identified the missing prostitute as 24-year-old Shannon Gilbert, of Jersey City. Dormer said Gilbert worked as a prostitute and arranged through Craigslist to meet a client on Fire Island.

The popular summertime vacation resort of Fire Island is actually a 30-mile strip of villages located just east of Cedar Beach. While some parts of western Fire Island are accessible by motor vehicle, most visitors travel there by ferry.

Police officers returned to the scene Tuesday with a cadaver dog, searching the area for additional bodies. Despite a howling wind, temperatures in the low 20s and a coating of snow on the ground, Dormer said the dog would still be able to do its work. He said the search of the vast, remote area could take days or longer.

The discovery drew comparisons to a 4-year-old New Jersey case in which four prostitutes' bodies were found in a drainage ditch in Egg Harbor Township, just outside Atlantic City and about a mile from the beach. Those killings remain unsolved.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Theodore Housel said Tuesday that Atlantic County detectives were still investigating the bodies found in November 2006 and had spoken with authorities in New York about their case.

"We have been in contact with authorities in Suffolk County, New York," he said. "It would not be fair for us to comment on their investigation." He would not comment further.

Long Island Serial Killer: Are Dead Bodies More Important than Missing Girls?
By Jaclyn Gallucci on December 16th, 2010

Six months ago, when Megan Waterman left a Hauppauge hotel and never came back in June, her disappearance barely made news. Hardly anyone on Long Island knew her name.

Now that four bodies were found on Ocean Parkway in a quaint, beautiful beachside community and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer has said those bodies may be the work of a serial killer—and that they were found while police were searching for another missing prostitute, Shannon Gilbert, who received even less media attention than Waterman when she disappeared back in May—Waterman’s and Gilbert’s names are suddenly everywhere you look.

Lost Girls: When Women Disappear on Long Island, Some Matter. Prostitutes Don’t

advertisement

Lorraine Ela, Waterman’s mother, said Wednesday that Det. Don Blatchford, lead detective on the Waterman’s case, said he was “leaning toward one of the four victims being Megan, but he’s not 100 percent guaranteed.”

The four bodies found on Ocean Parkway are located a 20-30 minute car ride away from the Holiday Inn Express just off the Long Island Expressway in Hauppauge where Waterman was last seen. Investigators have taken DNA samples from Ela to compare with the remains found at the beach.
Meanwhile, the FBI is now involved with the investigation, since the case may now involve a serial killer. Ela’s DNA was taken on Wednesday and will ship  to New York in an effort to determine whether one of the bodies found is that of her daughter, said Robert Moulton, chief of the Scarborough, Maine, Police Department.

“There’s definitely a possibility, but we’re on hold at this point,” Moulton said .

Gilbert, the New Jersey prostitute who met a client in Oak Beach on May 1, disappeared just down the road from where the four bodies were discovered.

Suffolk County police discovered the first body on Saturday and the other three on Monday while following up on a missing-persons report for Gilbert. A Long Island resident recalled seeing the woman believed to be Gilbert briefly at his door around 4:45 a.m. May 1.

“I heard screaming at my front door,” said Gustav Coletti, who lives in Ocean Beach, about three miles from where the bodies were found. “She was saying, ‘I need help, I need help, they’re after me.’” He told the woman he was calling the police, but she immediately turned around and fled.

Long Island’s Unidentified Murder Victims-Do You Know John Doe?

A few moments later, a man in a sport-utility vehicle drove past the house and told Coletti he was looking for the woman. Coletti said the driver told him they had been at a party and the woman had become upset.

“He took off after and I waited for the police,” he said. That was the last he saw of either the driver or woman, said Coletti, who could not offer details on the SUV or the man.

Juan Cosme, who lived across the hall from Gilbert and her boyfriend in Jersey City, said he often heard the couple fighting loudly through a shared wall.
They were always arguing, like curdling screams sometimes,” Cosme said. “I called the police a few times when they went at it at three in the morning and there was like a loud banging on the walls; I don’t know if the police ever came.”

Cosme said that when he saw Gilbert alone she rarely made eye contact and would only occasionally mumble “hello.”

Police did not search along the Long Island highway, about 45 miles east of Manhattan, on Wednesday, but a spokeswoman said it was likely investigators would return there in the coming days.

Detectives believe the four were killed elsewhere and then taken to Ocean Parkway.

New reports are surfacing that the remains found could be too old to be those of Gilbert, which would mean they would also be too old to be those of Waterman.

Different scenarios are being tossed around by the public and the names Megan Waterman and Shannon Gilbert–names practically unknown on Long Island until this week–have gone national. Even the UK Daily Mail is reporting the story.

But if it is either of these women, or both, who were tossed out of a car and left among the sand dunes and brush at Gilgo beach, all this attention won’t help either of them now.

If it’s not, maybe the media hoopla will help find them. Or help find their killer or killers, if the worst case scenario comes to be.

But if there was this much attention given to either of these women back in May and June when they first disappeared, if their faces and their families’ pleas for information were everywhere you looked months ago, if their stories were front page news back then, maybe the end result could have been different.

Maybe not.

If the LI murderer is the same AC murderer, what's his fascination with the #4? Is there a significance to this #? Is anybody here a Mason that deals with numbers as a higher power of significance? If so, maybe you could lend a hand... Both sets of murders are thought to have occurred in the month of November - 4 women in the AC area from 2006 and 4 women in the LI area. The AC murders were of 4 prostitutes. The LI murders are thought to be of prostit now in 2010utes but full disclosure of such isn't privy to us yet. There are 4 years between 2006 & 2010. What's this idiot think it's the Olympics or something?

Garden State Parkway is a straight shot that connects Atlantic City NJ to Long Island NY. I wonder if it could be somebody that works for the road department, or maybe somebody that used to but now works in maintenance. I mean, who would know the most remote places to DISPLAY these bodies? Whomever it is, they had to know this was a good spot to dump the bodies...right? What kind of regular "layperson" would know this place? Also, considering the murders in Atlantic City, and if they are in fact related, what kind of person would know the best place to DISPLAY the bodies? Such a place would be hidden enough that the culprit could dispose of the bodies and be able to get away in time - without being seen and/or caught.

What a difference in the way crime stories are reported in New York and New Jersey newspapers. Perhaps it was an error in judgment, but the investigator in charge of the Long Island case has already admitted that these bodies may be the work of a serial killer. Usually no matter what the circumstances members of the law enforcement community will deny the possibility of a serial murder case. This has been demonstrated in the Atlantic City murders in November of 2006 and in the murders of two elderly females in Bergen County in 2010. The Long Island murders are linked to New Jersey through one possible victim, Shonnan Gilbert, of Jersey City, alleged to be a prostitute as were the Atlantic City victims. It was revealed that the victims in Long Island showed no sign of trauma which presents the possibility of suffocation or strangulation. All of the Atlantic City victims were asphyxiated. The Atlantic City victims were placed several hundred feet apart in a drainage ditch alongside the Atlantic City Expressway. Facing east, possibly towards the casinos, but also in the general direction of New York. It will be interesting to discover if any articles of clothing, particularly shoes, were removed from the New York victims. The posing of the victims in Atlantic City may have been possible due to the proximity of a motel and the fact that the murderer’s vehicle would not stand out, allowing more time to place the victims. In the Long Island case, any vehicle stopped along that stretch of roadway would be clearly visible and unusual. The assailant would have little time to risk any activity other than dumping the bodies. It is hard to imagine that in today’s world with all we now know about serial murderers, that anyone would deny a possible connection between any murders simply because of distance. Furthermore, the lack of information about two females found dead in motel/hotels in Egg Harbor and Washington Township along the same roadway as the Atlantic City murder victims, the Black Horse Pike, is truly disturbing. Perhaps none of these cases are related, but certainly the Atlantic City murders are not solved some four years later and this type of assailant will continue killing until he dies or is arrested.
End Quote

Now, remember I mentioned the Garden State Parkway? Well look on Google Maps & see where the Black Horse Pike is. The Black Horse Pike is US40 / Rte322. So if I look at Long Island NY, the look at Atlantic City, NJ, I will then look in the middle and directly across to see the triangulation of the area. Could the culprit be coming from the Philadelphia or Cherry Hill area?

Police Raid New York Home in Hunt for Possible Serial Killer

Published December 16, 2010 | FoxNews.com

Police and FBI agents investigating the discovery of four bodies near a remote New York beach raided a Long Island home Thursday where a missing New Jersey woman was last seen, sources tell FoxNews.com.

An official with the Suffolk County Police Department said a white sport utility vehicle was taken from an Oak Beach, N.Y., residence but declined to name the owner.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to an ongoing investigation, also said authorities returned Thursday to the secluded section of Ocean Parkway looking for more possible victims.

Police on the southern shore of Long Island found the badly decomposing remains of four women along a quarter-mile stretch of the parkway earlier in the week.

Authorities were conducting a "training exercise" on Saturday when they came across the first body. A police canine unit chose the area in response to a missing-person report made in May after Jersey City, N.J., resident Shonnan Gilbert disappeared. Three more bodies were discovered on Monday.

Gilbert was reportedly last seen alive on May 1. The woman worked as a prostitute and had arranged through the Craigslist classified ads website to meet a client on Fire Island -- about a mile from Oak Beach, a police source told FoxNews.com.

Authorities said they are hunting for a possible serial killer who may have dumped the women in area. The women's remains were found in different stages of decomposition, according to a police source, leading authorities to believe that they were dumped over the course of a year -- possibly even two years.

The women have not yet been identified. Police reportedly said that a preliminary view of the corpses suggests Gilbert was not among the four victims found.

Authorities have not released the name of the Oak Beach homeowner, but local news reports say Gilbert was last seen at the home of Joseph Brewer.

When FoxNews.com called a phone number registered to a Brewer family member, a man answered the phone and said "we have no information." He directed FoxNews.com to call the police with any questions.

The New York Post reports that Brewer invited Gilbert to his home for a party on May 1 after corresponding with her through Craigslist.com. The 24-year-old woman reportedly ran frantically from Brewer's home later that night, and banged on the door of neighbor Gustav Colletti, asking for help. Gilbert's mother also reportedly told the newspaper that her daughter called 911, saying, "He's trying to kill me! Help me!"

Meanwhile, the mother of a Maine woman who worked as a Craigslist escort and went missing from a hotel on Long Island said police informed her that her daughter may be one of the victims.

Twenty-two-year-old Megan Waterman, of Scarborough, Maine, was last seen in June in Hauppauge, N.Y., where she went with her boyfriend.

Waterman's mother, Lorraine Ela, told The Associated Press that a Scarborough detective told her he was "leaning toward one of the four victims being Megan, but he's not 100 percent guaranteed."

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The man who drove a missing New Jersey prostitute on the day she disappeared says she was "delirious" and "irrational" when she called 911 from a client's house.

Authorities are trying to determine whether Shannon Gilbert is one of four women whose bodies were found dumped on a deserted Long Island beach highway.

Authorities suspect they may be dealing with a serial killer.

The driver, who didn't want his name used, told The Jersey City Journal he dropped the 24-year-old off in Oak Beach, N.Y., at about 2 a.m. on May 1.

He said Gilbert's client phoned him three hours later and said Gilbert was refusing to leave.

The man said he found Gilbert on the phone telling a 911 operator that a man was after her.

The driver told the newspaper he tried to get Gilbert leave but she said, "You guys are trying to kill me."

He said Gilbert eventually ran from the house.

NY police: Unlikely there's more beach victims
(AP) – 1 hour ago

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) — It is unlikely that additional bodies will be found along a seaside road where the corpses of four women were discovered in recent days, a police official said Friday, emphasizing that detectives remain open to any scenario to explain their discovery.

Despite comments earlier in the week from Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer that it appeared possible the deaths of the four women were the result of a serial killer, Deputy Inspector William Neubauer told reporters Friday that detectives were not limiting themselves to any theory.

"We have no idea whatsoever whether we're dealing with a serial killer," he said. "Anything is possible at this point, because there's so many unanswered questions."

Neubauer said an expanded search of a 15-mile stretch of Ocean Parkway, where the bodies were found, was nearing its conclusion, adding "the likelihood of finding further remains is remote."

Detectives believe the four women died elsewhere and were then taken to the site, a narrow strip of land that divides the Great South Bay from the ocean. The parkway connects Jones Beach with several state- and town-run beaches to its east along the south shore of Long Island.

Neubauer reiterated Friday that police have no suspects and that it could take weeks to determine the identities of the four women. The New York City medical examiner is helping the identification process.

Police on Thursday eliminated a missing New Jersey woman last seen working as a Craigslist escort as a possible victim after comparing her medical records with those of the four victims.

Neubauer said Friday it also appeared unlikely that a missing Maine woman last seen working as an escort on Long Island was among the four, although there was no official confirmation ruling her out.

DNA results were a match for Megan Waterman, Suffolk County police told Waterman's family.

A Maine prostitute missing since June has been identified as one of four bodies found on an isolated Long Island beach late last year, authorities said Wednesday.

The Suffolk County medical examiner identified Megan Waterman's body through a DNA match, police said.

Investigators say Waterman was the victim of foul play, but would not disclose the exact cause of death.

The three other bodies remain unidentified - for now, police said.

"We're very close to identifying the other three bodies," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said.

Waterman's family was notified of the match early Wednesday, said her mother Lorraine Ela, of Portland, Maine.

She said she long suspected her 22-year-old daughter - last seen at a Hauppauge hotel - had met a violent end, but confirmation still came as a shock.

"I knew since she first went missing that something terrible had happened to her. I had that motherly instinct. I knew once they found those bodies it wasn't going to be a positive outcome, but I still held out hope," Ela said.

Waterman's body was among four sets of skeletal remains found on Gilgo Beach in December.

Investigators have said they believe a serial killer may be the culprit, though police said yesterday they have not made that determination.

Police initially suspected that a missing New Jersey hooker, Shannon Gilbert, was one of the victims, but she was quickly ruled out.

UPDATE: All four victims from Gilgo Beach identified

1.25.11
Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, of Norwich, Connecticut, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, of Erie County, New York, and Long Islander Amber Lynn Costello, 27, of North Babylon, have been identified as the final three women whose remains were found in Gilgo Beach in December. The information was released by the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) yesterday.

On Jan. 20th, SCPD announced at a press conference that Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine, was identified as one of four bodies found on Dec. 13, 2010.

The original discovery of skeletal remains was made during a police training exercise in an area where a person had been reported missing earlier in 2010.

The potential exists for this to be the work of a serial killer, and a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Just some interesting things from a Jan 29 2011 article

http://bayridgejournal.blogspot.com/2011/01/body-dump-at-gilgo-beach.html

The bodies of four young women, in varying stages of decomposition, had been dropped in a row along Ocean Parkway, east of Jones Beach State Park. As the victims were identified, it was learned that, like Gilbert, they had been sex workers in their 20s who advertised on Craigslist.  As was Gilbert, they were all exceptionally petite.  They all appeared to have been killed in a similar manner at another location and driven to the dump site.

Ocean Parkway is a 4-lane road connecting Jones Beach State Park with several state-and town-run beaches to the east along a narrow strip of land between the Great South Bay and the Atlantic.  In summer, it attracts a surfing crowd.

The dump site is on a remote, windy stretch of oceanfront about nine miles east of Jones Beach. There are no streetlights and very few homes there.

The bodies were spaced about 500 feet apart. Police surmised that the killer drove up, opened the opposite car door and dumped the bodies into the brush. According to some reports, one or more of the bodies had been wrapped in burlap.

snip

After Melissa Barthelmy disappeared on July 7, 2009, someone -- perhaps her killer -- made a series of six obscene phone calls to her teenaged sister on July 16, 19 and 23, using her cell phone, asking the sister if she knew that Melissa was a "whore".  Police tracked the caller from Massapequa to midtown Manhattan, where the signal died.

fifth set of human remains found on a remote Long Island beach was discovered by a sharp-eyed cop who was scanning dunes from an oceanfront highway, police said Wednesday.

The windswept barrier island on Long Island's south shore is believed to be a serial killer's dumping ground, and the case took on a new level of mystery with the latest find.

Homicide police informed Gilbert's family this morning, who told Metro yesterday they tried to remain positive, but feared the worst after a fifth body was discovered on Gilgo Beach.

My assessment of this man who is murdering these girls is a Christian in an orthodox tradition. His positioning them facing the east is to receive Christ as their savior for the second coming of Christ. Being buried face down shows disrespect to the dead for their deeds in this life. Being buried in a shrowd made of natural materials such as burlap is also traditional as is the custom of burying the dead without shoes. He feels he is saving their souls as he is likely making them repent and accept Christ as their savior prior to killing them. I would suspect he sees himself as a fisherman of souls as Jesus was and is likely a religious fisherman of an orthodox tradition. He may have been ordained as well as he sees it as his job to save souls. He leaves them in a place to be found as he wants to send a message about how they lived their lives and draw attention to this. I would bet their arms are folded as well and perhaps a cross nearby.

Eight bodies found on New York beach raising fears of a Craigslist serial killer

INVESTIGATORS ON Long Island have discovered the remains of three more people – bringing to eight the number of bodies discovered in a small coastal area forty miles east of New York city since last December.

The latest grim discoveries have raised fears that there may be a serial killer on the loose in the area.

The New York Times reports that bodies of four female prostitutes were found off the highway on Gilgo Beach last December, as police speculated that they may have been dumped there by whoever had killed them.

Last week, a fifth set of remains were found a mile east of where the first four bodies were found – and then yesterday, three more sets of remains were discovered in the brush off the north side of Ocean Parkway, near the secluded Gilgo Beach.

No connection has yet been established between the most recent discoveries and the first four, who were all working as prostitutes and had advertised on Craiglist.

Body count at eight as LI beach search continues

Updated at 06:09 AM today
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=...land&id=8053594

OAK BEACH (WABC) -- The grim search for more bodies is expanding on the beaches of Long Island.

Police have now found eight bodies along Oak Beach and Gilgo Beach, and officials say there could be more.

The search area is expanding Tuesday beyond the two beaches to the Nassau County line. And the mystery remains, is this the work of one serial killer?

If investigators find more clues in this Jack the Ripper case in Suffolk County, it's going to be very difficult because of the weather conditions. There is fog and rain in the forecast and also high winds. The search all started with Shannan Gilbert's disappearance last May and the first grim discovery of remains back in December.

Gilbert, 24, was a Jersey City prostitute who visited a Craigslist client in Oak Beach and then vanished. The client, Joseph Brewer, has not been named a suspect and is said to be cooperating with police. The initial search turned up four bodies, but no trace of Gilbert. The fifth body found last week was also not Gilbert. The three latest victims have not yet been identified.

Now, many are wondering if the area has turned into a graveyard.

"It's a tough area," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said. "It's very easy to miss something, but that's why we're doing it again."

The new discoveries Monday were due to a new tactic, as fire trucks from three towns used their extension ladders ti put searchers 20 feet over the brambles, high enough to see ground disturbances.

"We found human remains, three human remains so far in the area between Oak Beach and Gilgo Beach," Dormer said.

Searchers will be back at it Tuesday with dozens of police recruits, forensic experts and cadaver dogs. The teams are hard to pick out once they move deeper into the brush, which will soon become a thick cloak of green.

It's the same raw beauty that attracted a small community of homeowners.

"When I heard today three more [remains were found], it really, really scared me," resident Barbara McGinn said. "Because I just want somebody to find out who is doing this and end it all."

Dominick Varrone, Suffolk's chief of detectives, said the dogs were having a difficult time maneuvering through the brush.

"They don't like getting smacked in the face with the bramble," he said.

Police said as many as 20 officers had been infected with poison ivy during recent searches, and there also were concerns about ticks.

Westbound lanes of Ocean Parkway will be closed for the ongoing search. Eastbound lanes will remain open. Residents who live in the area will need show identification. Other people are asked to stay away.

All of the killings are thought to be the work of a serial killer who is targeting prostitutes.

Cops eyeing suspect in grisly Long Island murders

Police believe they know the identity of the Long Island Ripper, The Post has learned.

Cops on Long Island are "looking at somebody," said a law-enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation.

He refused to elaborate.

The stunning revelation comes as police are exploring a possible link between the serial killer -- suspected of dumping the bodies of eight victims along a remote Suffolk beachfront -- and the grisly murders of four hookers in Atlantic City in 2006.

'We think the Craigslist Ripper may be a cop': Investigators' chilling new theory on 'smart' Long Island serial killer
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 12:03 AM on 10th April 2011

Calls to vice girls made on untraceable cell phones
He thwarted police with three-minute calls to sister of victim

They believe he may have murdered four prostitutes in Atlantic City in 2006

Search widened to Nassau County

The serial killer dubbed the Craigslist Ripper has a sophisticated understanding of police investigation techniques and 'may be a cop', it was claimed today.

The startling new theory emerged as it was revealed the last man to see suspected victim Shannan Gilbert believes the prostitute is still alive.
Officers in Long Island where four bodies of of vice girls have been dug up, are convinced the killer  could be in law enforcement because:

He used disposable and untraceable cell phones to contact the four victims - all in their twenties - who advertised their services on Craigslist.
When he made six taunting calls to the sister of victim Melissa Barthelemy they lasted under three minutes each thwarting officers racing to find his exact location.
The calls were made in New York City, including Times Square and Madison Garden, allowing him to blend in with the crowds unseen, ensuring if his cell was pinpointed surveillance cameras would not be able to pick him out.
Some investigators now believe the killer's behaviour points to a man who has a deep knowledge of how police investigate serious crimes.

One of the four sets of remains recently found on a remote Long Island beach belongs to a baby or a child -- not a grown woman, a law-enforcement source told The Post.

"One doesn't match the others. It's a young person, possibly as young as an infant, or a child," said the source, who is familiar with the investigation.

"If that's the case, then that wouldn't fit the pattern," the source added, suggesting that the victim may not be related to the other murders, believed to be the work of a serial killer.

Hi KittyMom!

I know we had vultures when I lived in Maine, so I susoect they have them in NY as well, but I believe they are not typically a species that hangs out on the coast. However, seagulls are scavengers that may have been attracted to remains, but wouldn't draw much attention near a beach.

Did anyone else hear that one of the 3 bodies found last week was that of a child? I read that recently and now I can't find the link. Also, a few weeks ago I read an article, I think it was from the Bridgeport CT area about several women's bodies discovered behind some strip mall. Can't help but wonder if all these murders are connected, especially since LE is suggesting the LI murders are related to those that took place in Atlantic City. Anyone think there could be more dump sites related to this serial killer?

Hunt for Long Island Serial Killer Turns Up More Bones
Bones of an 18-Month-Old-Toddler Are Found on Long Island Beach
April 11, 2011

Investigators hunting for a serial killing "animal" found two more sets of bones on New York beaches today, raising the number of possible victims to 10.
The medical examiner on Long Island, however, is trying to determine today whether one set of bones is human or animal. One of the remains was just a skull, police said.

Police sources also revealed to ABC News today that one of the bodies is that of a toddler about 18-months old. It was not clear if the child was connected to the serial killer's murderous spree.

Investigative sources told ABC News that there are multiple persons of interest who may be linked to the bodies on the Long Island beaches and to missing prostitute Shannan Gilbert, whose body has not been found. Among those persons of interest are several who have links to law enforcement and have knowledge of or regular access to the beaches, sources to ABC News.

"We want to bring to justice this animal that has obviously taken the lives of a number of people," Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said.

The latest discovery was about five miles from where eight other bodies were located, and about 1.5 miles east from the popular Jones Beach.

Thanks.  I know that we have buzzards along the marshes.  Never seen one on the beach, but we don't really have anything big enough to attract a bird that size.  Around here, if you hit a deer with your car, it's barely dead before multiple buzzards show up to feast.

"One night about two months ago, he parked a U-Haul van on the side of the house. It was the strangest thing," the neighbor added.

"He and another man were packing the truck up in the dark. They moved real fast. It took about fifteen minutes. They didn't turn any lights on except one little light. That was the last time I saw him."

I have not had a chance to look yet.

here are some details:

Sources with intimate knowledge of the case informed the Boston Herald about significant details regarding the case, including more information regarding the unusual remains found.

A child’s remains were found wrapped in a blanket amongst the adult bodies. The remains indicate the youngster is probably less than 5 years old. Authorities are still unsure as to whether the child is actually linked to the serial killer slayings, as the murderer appears to have thus far soley targeted adult female prostitutes.
A human head was discovered in a plastic bag.
A third set of remains indicated the body may have been dismembered.
The four female victims found in December had been strangled, with one still having an “item” around her neck.
The skull and vertebra found were examined and are likely that of a woman.
The four Gilgo Beach victims found were all women who worked as prostitutes and advertised their services on Craigslist.
At least one set of human bones was found stuffed in a black plastic bag.

Long Island serial killer? Search to expand into neighboring county – CBS News

(CBS/WCBS/AP) OAK BEACH, N.Y. – The search on a Long Island barrier island for additional victims of a possible serial killer after eight bodies have been discovered in the area since December is expected to expand from Suffolk county into neighboring Nassau County in the coming days.

According to CBS affiliate WCBS, on Wednesday about two dozen police cadets conducted a search on foot while officers using fire truck ladders and buckets got a view from the air near a residential area known as West Gilgo Beach.

 ::snipping2::

Police have identified the four bodies found in December as Amber Lynn Costello, 27, originally of Wilmington, N.C.; Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 28, of Norwich, Conn.; and Melissa Barthelemy, 24, of Buffalo, N.Y.

Latest LI Beach Bodies Could Be Old Joel Rifkin Victims

The hunt for the so-called Long Island Serial Killer is getting wet. After uncovering one-or-two more sets of human remains (they aren't sure about the latest set of remains) in Nassau County on Monday, authorities are taking their hunt to the high seas. Teams of four Suffolk marine bureau divers are expected today to start searching Hemlock Cove, between Oak and Gilgo beaches, for further victims (and possibly the still-missing prostitute Shannan Gilbert). Meanwhile the most recent set of bones may not be the work of the Gilgo Beach killer—some suspect they are actually connected to another Long Island serial killer, Joel Rifkin

Latest New York beach remains may belong to victims of notorious Long Island butcher

NEW YORK -- The skull and torso found on a desolate New York beach were too old to be connected to the serial killings of four Craigslist call girls, and could belong to victims of notorious Long Island butcher Joel Rifkin, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

"These [remains] are so old that roots were growing around the vertebrae and the skull," a source said.

"These could be one or two of Joel Rifkin's victims who were never found," or the work of another killer, the source added.

Police Hunting Long Island Serial Killer Fear They'll Find More Bodies
FBI Plane With High Tech Cameras and Sonar Joins Manhunt
April 14, 2011

 ::snipping2::
The gut feeling that there are more bodies hidden along the shores of Long Island has police going to extraordinary lengths to scour the area for remains. The lone road through the area was expected to be closed down for several hours today as an FBI plane with sophisticated cameras and sonar is scheduled to join the search.

Police divers returned to Hemlock Cove for a second day, a body of water near where some of the bodies have been found. Police sources told ABC News that they are searching the cove in the belief that storms that lash the barrier island may have washed evidence, or bodies, into the water.

Searchers on foot are still combing the thick scrub and a WABC chopper today spotted officials taking a large black bag and several canvas bags from the brush and putting them in the back of a truck. Whatever was in the bags had been found in the brush.

Investigative sources also tell ABC News that they are increasingly convinced that they are finding the victims of a serial killer and a second killer.
 ::snipping2::
t was revealed on Tuesday that the serial killer may have dismembered several of his victims, law enforcement authorities have told ABC News. ABC News has also learned that at least one of the victims died by "homicidal asphyxiation," which could mean strangulation or being smothered.

Long Island serial killer: FBI to search for bodies with high-tech aerial imaging

"Not natural items" found in latest police searches

The source said during police fly-overs this week, a lot of bags were spotted among debris in the dense vegetation, which investigators want to examine to see if they contain remains.

Investigators are also analyzing the burlap bag packaging that held some of the remains for clues and combing over cell phone records and the internet for any leads. The four identified women were known prostitutes who advertised on the internet.

Investigators using old fashion leg-work and technology are also trying to trace the movements of the four women who have been identified, talking to their family members, friends, anyone involved in the lives of the victims for information they may lead them to their killer.

More than 600 hundreds calls have been received by Nassau and Suffolk detectives even several callers from overseas, offering tips and suggesting strategies for finding the serial killer. Mostly all of the leads are being run to ground, sources said. They are also examining old cases of serial killers to see if a link can be established.

So far there are no active suspects.

Amid serial killer search, man recalls woman's cries
April 14, 2011

 ::snipping2::
Authorities believe Shannan Gilbert of New Jersey, who went missing in May 2010, was a victim of a suspected serial killer targeting prostitutes who advertised on Craigslist. They believe she was visiting a male customer in the seaside neighborhood of Oak Beach on Long Island.

Oak Beach resident Gus Colleti, 75, said he saw the terrified girl shortly before she went missing.

"I opened up the door and she just came inside yelling 'Help me, help me, help me,'" Coletti told Reuters.

"She came running to my house screaming for help," he said. "I called the police and she ran out the door."

Shortly after Colleti called police, he said he walked outside to find a man searching for Gilbert.
"He said he was having a party that Gilbert was at and she got upset," he said. "The man said he was trying to get her to come back."

That's when Colleti said he saw Gilbert sprint away from a nearby boat she was hiding under and the man looking for her run after her.

"That's the last I saw of them," he said.

Authorities declined to comment on whether or not the man Colleti saw is a suspect in the case.

Gilgo Beach murders: Police ID a fifth victim
5.9.11
In a breaking update to the Long Island serial killer case, police announced today that more than one killed is apparently using Long Island barrier beaches as a dumping ground for dead bodies.

Just today, police also identified some of the remains they found in March on the beaches near Gilgo Beach and Jones Beach.

Police identified remains found in March as body parts of Jessica Taylor, a missing prostitute.

In 2003, Taylor's body was found in Manorville, Long Island -- but her head, hands and forearm were missing. It is those missing body parts that police found on March 29 on Ocean Parkway.

DNA linked the two sets of remains together.

Two NYPD cops with history of hooker trouble being eyed in LI killings

By BRAD HAMILTON
Last Updated: 8:02 AM, May 15, 2011
Posted: 1:43 AM, May 15, 2011

Two NYPD cops are being eyed in the Long Island serial slayings after investigators learned they got into trouble for hiring prostitutes while working for the department, according to sources familiar with the probe.

One cop was forced out of the job in the 1990s when his supervisors learned he spent time pursuing hookers and paying street walkers and down-and-out women for sex while he was supposed to be on patrol.

An internal investigation led to his resigning under pressure, one source said.

The other officer still works for the NYPD but was stripped of his gun and badge years ago because he allegedly assaulted a prostitute and got arrested during a sting operation.

I would bet anything that these cops knew each other.  This is sickening that it's Law Enforcement that might be involved in these murders.

The cops are getting just as bad as the criminals themselves today.

I have been following the most recent case regarding the two cops that raped the girl who they helped in her house and went back 4 times.  Joe Tacopina is their attorney and he makes me sick to my stomach the things he said about that young girl.  The cops story was so outrageous it's an insult to our intelligence.

Among Bodies Discarded on a Beach, One That Doesn’t Fit
By MANNY FERNANDEZ
Published: May 29, 2011
The little girl had lived, at most, 730 days or so. Someone had hidden her body in the thicket of branches and poison ivy off Ocean Parkway on the South Shore of Long Island. By the time the police discovered her on April 4, the remains had turned skeletal.

About 250 feet from the toddler’s body, the head, right foot and hands of a woman yet to be identified were found. More than a mile away, the head, hands and forearm of another woman, a 20-year-old missing prostitute, were discovered in the brush. And farther down Ocean Parkway, even more bodies were found, including those of four prostitutes who had advertised for clients on Craigslist.

 ::snipping2::
a mystery of a different kind shrouds the death of the toddler, who was found on the same scrubby and desolate stretch of land, a tragic, nameless footnote in the case.

While the other victims had clearly been murdered, Suffolk County officials said, the toddler’s body showed no sign of injury or trauma, and her death has not been classified as a homicide.

 ::snipping2::
The girl was between 18 months and 24 months old at the time of her death, older than in typical abandoned-infant situations, in which mothers with unwanted pregnancies discard or kill their newborns in the minutes or days following the births.

Criminologists and other experts said that it was unlikely that the toddler had been abducted by a stranger, and that the details about the case suggested that the girl’s parent or caretaker placed her in the brush to conceal her death for reasons that are still unknown.

 ::snipping2::

One clue suggesting that the toddler’s parent or guardian was involved is the blanket. Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a co-author of “When Mothers Kill: Interviews From Prison,” said wrapping the toddler in a blanket suggested an emotional connection between the child and the person disposing of the body. The gesture itself was something a mother might do.

 ::snipping2::   ***ME > Sound familiar<?
Often, mothers who kill their children dispose of the body close by, like in their backyard or even in their house, unlike in many cases involving fathers or stepfathers, who often discard the body far from home.....

East Hampton Town Police divers have found a human skull in waters off Big Alberts Landing beach in Amagansett, near where a headless body washed ashore on May 22, police said in a press release Friday afternoon.

Police said divers found the skull about 40 feet from shore, in about eight to 10 feet of water, “in close proximity” to where the body was found. They handed the skull over to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office, where the other remains were sent last month.

Remains on NY beach highway tied to 1996 discovery
 September 20, 2011
YAPHANK, N.Y.—Detectives investigating the discovery of 10 sets of human remains along a New York beach parkway said Tuesday that DNA testing had linked one of the victim's bodies to an unsolved homicide 15 years ago.

The announcement came during a police briefing during which authorities released sketches of two of the unidentified victims in hopes that someone might recognize them.

They also released photographs of jewelry found on two of victims, an unidentified woman and a toddler. The woman and the girl were found miles from each other, but police said DNA evidence now shows that they were related, although investigators have yet to confirm whether they are mother and daughter.

Latest Theory in NY Mystery Deaths: 1 Killer of 10
November 30, 2011

A New York police official says one person may be responsible for leaving 10 bodies along a remote barrier beach since 1996.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer tells The Associated Press that detectives no longer think multiple killers are responsible. Dormer has previously said as many as three people could have left bodies along a desolate Long Island roadway.

Dormer has been giving media interviews in advance of the anniversary of the discovery of the first body on Dec. 11, 2010. His latest theory was first reported Wednesday by Newsday.

Dormer declined to detail reasons for the change in theory, but notes all victims appear linked to the sex trade.

Police say one serial killer to blame for Long Island killings
November 30, 2011

(CNN) -- After nearly a year-long investigation, police say they think a single serial killer is responsible for 10 sets of human remains found along a remote stretch of Long Island, New York beach.

"The theory is now that we're dealing with one serial killer," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer told CNN affiliate WABC on Tuesday.

He noted the killer did not "necessarily do the same thing all the time."

"What's common here is the dumping ground," he said.

Dormer previously said that only the first set of remains found -- which included four females uncovered in December -- could be the work of a serial killer or killers.

It is not clear what prompted the change.

The woman whose disappearance triggered the searches, 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert, remains missing.

The New Jersey woman was last seen in May 2010 at a private party at a home in Long Island's Oak Beach community.

Police say they have sifted through more than 1,000 tips related to the case.

So, did the toddler's dna not match any of the other victims?  Strange...you'd think that the toddler would be the child of one of them.  If it belongs to the perp, wouldn't her dna give LE a clue to the identity of the killer?

Not sure, but perhaps they do not believe now that some of the recent remains found are the victims of Joel Rifkin

Missing NY Prostitute's Remains Identified
December 17, 2011

NewsCore) - Authorities identified Saturday the human remains discovered on a Long Island beach as those of missing prostitute Shannan Gilbert, FOX News Channel reported.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner said in a statement that it had positively identified Gilbert's remains, but the cause of death has not yet been determined.

The Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad is continuing the investigation, the statement said.

Gilbert's May 2010 disappearance in Oak Beach, a gated community on Long Island's south shore, led to the unexpected discovery of the remains of 10 victims of a suspected serial killer.
 ::snipping2::
Police have also said Gilbert's disappearance and the deaths of the 10 other victims do not appear to be linked.

More Human Remains Are Found on Long Island
By AL BAKER
February 18, 2012

Another set of human remains was discovered in a wooded area of eastern Long Island that has become a dumping ground for bodies over the years, the authorities said on Saturday.

The question now is whether the skeletal remains, found on Friday evening by a man walking his dog on a trail in Manorville, represent an isolated death or is the latest clue in a continuing serial-killer case that is confronting investigators in Suffolk County.

“At this time, we cannot say if the remains are connected to any other cases,” a police spokeswoman said on Saturday. “The scene will be processed and re-evaluated to see if any further searching is necessary. At this point, we are at the preliminary stages of the investigation”

The spokeswoman said that investigators “cannot yet determine the age or gender of the remains.”

The police said a forensic anthropologist from the New York City medical examiner’s office would assist the Suffolk authorities in removing and evaluating the bones, which they said were believed to have been in the woods for several years based on the degree of plant growth around them.

The latest set of bones was discovered at around 6:30 p.m. Friday in a pine barrens in Manorville. A resident of the town, Matt Samuel, said he was walking through the area with his dog when he made the find.
“I probably walked by it a hundred times before, and I saw it kind of sticking out of the ground, and it looked unusual. I looked a little closer and from there discovered that it was human remains,” he said, adding that it looked like the body had decomposed many years ago. “It was wrapped in bed sheets and a plastic bag, It was a whole body, but just the bones, there was trees growing up through it, so it has been there a long time.”

Suffolk County Police said the undergrowth suggested the body had been dumped about five years ago, but an anthropologist was being brought in to examine the site. The age, gender and identity of the person were unknown.
 ::snipping2::
Suffolk County Deputy Inspector Kevin Fallon told reporters Saturday that it was too early to tell whether the new skeleton is related to any of those other cases.

More possible human remains found on Long Island
4-5-11

Police on Long Island are trying to determine whether bones discovered in a wooded area are human or from an animal.

Newsday (http://bit.ly/HgE3kC ) reports that the bones were found Wednesday in an area off Gerard Road, near Patchogue-Yaphank Road.

Yaphank is about 10 miles from Manorville, where six instances of human remains have been found since 2000.

Long Island Serial Killer? Yet Another Body Discovered In Woods Near Manorvile (VIDEO)

Posted: 03/22/2012 2:16 pm Updated: 03/22/2012 2:30 pm
Police are investigating the discovery of yet another body found in a wooded area near Manorville on Long Island. ABC News reports:

A jogger discovered the body, facedown, on Wednesday afternoon. Police have not said if it's a man or a woman, but they say it was dumped relatively recently and had not decayed too much. They hope that helps with the identification process and to determine the cause of death.   ::snipping2::

Wednesday's discovery also occurred just miles away from where two torsos were found 10 years ago, and adds to a growing list of bodies found in the remote stretch of beachside communities on Long Island. It is the 12th body discovered in the region since 1996, the majority of which were uncovered after December, 2010. Only five of the bodies have been identified. Authorities suspect several of the bodies were dumped by a serial killer targeting prostitutes.

Severed head found in 1989 linked to serial killer
March 27, 2013

A woman whose severed head was found on a New Jersey golf course more than 20 years ago has been identified, and police say the trail leads to a notorious serial killer.
Almost 25 years after her severed head was found on a New Jersey golf course, police on Wednesday identified the woman they believe was the first victim of a notorious Long Island serial killer.

New Jersey State Police said Heidi Balch is believed to be the first of 17 women killed by Joel Rifkin during a four-year spree that ended when he was pulled over for a missing license plate in 1993 with a dead women's body in the back of his pickup.

Authorities have long believed the woman whose severed head was found in March 1989 on a golf course in Hopewell Township, near Trenton, was the first woman Rifkin killed. He all but admitted it after his 1993 arrest, when he provided details on where he disposed of her head and legs.

Rifkin was eventually sentenced to more than 200 years in prison for the killings. But Balch's identity remained a mystery for more than two decades.

State Police Det. Sgt. Stephen Urbanski said Balch's parents didn't initially list her as a missing person and because Balch, who worked as a prostitute in New York City, used several aliases and Social Security numbers.
 ::snipping2::
Rifkin had told police he killed a prostitute he'd known as "Susie," Urbanski said. The search led to New York where investigators focused on a prostitute who'd gone by the name Susan Spencer — and about 15 other names. Some of the bogus Social Security numbers she'd used were traced to Ohio and Florida, so Urbanski went to those states to check missing persons reports.

Finally, investigators learned the woman had once used the name Heidi Balch, who had been listed as a missing person in New York by her aunt in 2001. Even that discovery was complicated by the revelation that the last sighting of Balch was in 1995, six years after the remains were found on the golf course. Urbanski said it was later revealed Balch's aunt hadn't actually seen her niece but that someone had mistakenly told her they had seen Heidi.

The big break came earlier this month when Balch's aunt identified her niece from an arrest photo of Susan Spencer. Subsequent DNA tests of Balch's mother and father, who live in Maryland and Florida, respectively, confirmed the identification.

Balch's parents "expressed shock," Urbanski said. "They knew in their hearts something bad had happened to her, but not to this extent. I don't think they ever imagined she was the first victim of Joel Rifkin."

Urbanski said state police are in the process of reviewing cases of unidentified bodies found in New Jersey from the time Balch's remains were found up until Rifkin's arrest.

Five years after mass grave discovered, Albuquerque killings remain unsolved
February 9, 2014

 ::snipping3::
In the last half-decade, connections to other mass killings have been investigated and dismissed, and suspicion has focused on various drifters and criminals only to see them cleared. Authorities insist they won’t stop until they solve what is known locally as the “West Mesa murders.”
 ::snipping3::
A study by Purdue University researchers found that serial murders have declined, but when they do occur, victims are increasingly likely to be prostitutes. A year after the bodies at West Mesa were found, a similar mass grave containing the remains of six women was discovered 2,000 miles away on Long Island, N.Y.  Authorities probed a possible connection between the Albuquerque case and what became known as New York's “Gilgo Beach Murders,” but determined there is no connection.

But the cases bear similarities, and have one troubling aspect in common: They remain unsolved.

“We are not commenting further at this time on the Gilgo investigation until/unless we have some additional information pertaining to the investigation that serves the public by its release,” Suffolk County Police Deputy Inspector Kevin Fallon told FoxNews.com.

Prostitute found dead near NY serial killer’s dumping ground possibly murdered, says famed coroner
March 10, 2015

The remains of a New York-area escort whose body was found in 2011 near a mass grave of prostitutes were buried Thursday, four days after a renowned coroner told Fox News she may have been murdered -- a development that could be a break in the hunt for a Long Island serial killer.

Shannan Gilbert, 23, of Jersey City, N.J., disappeared May 1, 2010, after visiting a client in the gated community of Oak Beach on a barrier island off Long Island's south shore. A months-long search for her first led to the bodies of four other prostitutes, each strangled and stuffed in burlap bags along Ocean Parkway, a 15-mile road that spans Jones Beach, roughly a mile from where they would later find Gilbert's body, in December 2011.

After the discovery of Gilbert's remains, the medical examiner ruled her cause of death "undetermined," and police theorized she drowned while running through a marsh in a drug-induced state -- calling her death unrelated to the four victims of a suspected serial killer.

"It's extremely rare for a young woman to die of drowning yards away from where four young women have clearly been murdered. The statistics don't go along with that."- Dr. Michael Baden, former New York City chief medical examiner
That finding was called into question Monday, when Dr. Michael Baden, former chief medical examiner of New York City, and a Fox News contributor, examined Gilbert's skeletonized remains inside a Nassau County funeral home at the request of her family.

Baden observed the hyoid bone -- a small horseshoe-shaped bone in the neck -- had a "rough edge" on one side, suggesting a fracture. He is conducting further testing on the bone and is seeking original crime scene and medical examiner photos and X-rays for analysis. A fracture to the hyoid bone is a hallmark sign of a strangulation.

"The hyoid shows some breakage," Baden told FoxNews.com. "If it is a fracture, that would be strong evidence Ms. Gilbert was strangled to death by neck compression."

The 80-year-old coroner, who served as New York City's chief medical examiner in the 1970's, reported other oddities and omissions from the original autopsy reports.

No drugs were found in Gilbert's body, according to toxicology reports cited in the 2011 autopsy -- a finding at odds with the police theory that she ran off into the night in a drug-fueled frenzy. Gilbert's thyroid cartilage was missing from the remains Baden examined, but the original examination does not report it as missing, Baden said. And a small, circular hole was found in the center of the hyoid bone, a marking Baden called unusual and warranting further analysis.

The former escort's remains were buried Thursday, some four years after they were found in a marsh on New York's Long Island, near the bodies of four murdered prostitutes.
Baden is also ordering a "diatom test," which may determine whether Gilbert drowned. The test was never done on Gilbert, who was found face up and about a half a mile from her torn jeans, cellphone and pocketbook.

"The body is almost always face down -- not face up -- in drowning situations," Baden said. "There's enough evidence here to warrant a second look."
 ::snipping3::
The suggestion that Gilbert might have been murdered is significant because she is linked to three known individuals in the hours before and after her disappearance: Her driver, Michael Pak; her client, Oak Beach resident Joseph Brewer; and another Oak Beach resident, Dr. Charles Peter Hackett, who called Gilbert's mother two days after she vanished, according to phone records.

Shortly after midnight on May 1, 2010, Gilbert responded to an online inquiry from Brewer, who lived in the isolated, gated community of Oak Beach. Pak transported Gilbert to Brewer's home and waited outside.

For reasons that remain unknown, Gilbert fled on foot from Brewer's home and made a 23-minute 911 call in which she said, "They're trying to kill me," according to law enforcement sources. Almost five years later, a complete transcript of the tape has yet to be released to the media.

Hackett and Brewer were ruled out by the Suffolk County Police Department, which did not begin searching for Gilbert until six months after she disappeared in December 2010 -- even though Gilbert was reported missing within two days of her disappearance.

"I feel the police department dropped the ball in such a way that it gives rise to the question of why?" said attorney John Ray, who represents the Gilbert family and who has spent four years gathering evidence and interviewing more than 20 people in the case.

"They did a very inadequate job," Ray said of the Suffolk County Police -- the highest paid police force in the nation. "Not once has anyone with the police department reached out to me to say, 'Hey what do you have? Is there anything you have that could help us?' I've managed to obtain substantial records in this case which I am certain the police never tried to obtain."

Ray has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Hackett, alleging the former Oak Beach resident gave Shannan a drug the night she disappeared that resulted in her death. Hackett, meanwhile, has maintained his innocence, telling investigators he never encountered the woman.

According to Gilbert's mother, Mari, Hackett called her home in upstate New York on May 3 -- two days after Shannan disappeared. Hackett, who once worked as head of emergency services for Suffolk County, allegedly told her he was running a home for "wayward girls" and that he had tried to treat Gilbert.

"Hackett told Mari that Shannan was in this home he was running," Ray claims. "He said Shannan left with her driver and promised to return. When she didn't, he said he got concerned and that's why he was calling."

The cellphone call was not made from Oak Beach but from New Jersey, near where Gilbert lived, according to cellphone records obtained by Ray. A second call was also made by Hackett to Gilbert's mother that Thursday, according to Ray.

Hackett initially denied making any calls, but when confronted by another news network with phone records, he remembered making the second call. He claims he had forgotten about it and was merely calling the family to express his concern, according to Ray. Gilbert's boyfriend had scoured the area for her the day after she disappeared and had knocked on Hackett's door.

Hackett's attorney, James O'Rourke, said his client has nothing to do with Gilbert's death.

After nearly a decade of digging, New York authorities probing the murders of at least eight women whose remains were dumped along a deserted stretch of highway near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach shared a single piece of evidence: a photo of a belt that may have belonged to the killer.
 ::snipping3::
That belt, embossed with the letters HM or WH, has been in police hands since the “initial stages of the investigation,” according to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart, who spoke at a much-hyped press conference in Yaphank Thursday.

But even as she was peppered with questions about the belt and the timing of the photo’s release, which came the same day that Netflix announced a film on the saga, Lost Girls, will debut March 13, Hart took pains to pitch a new crowd-sourcing website to solicit tips from the public in the case, Gilgonews.com. Reporters in the room noted almost immediately that this attempt at engagement with the public did not appear to be loading in their browsers.
