$10,000 reward offered for missing Colorado City girl, 13

An estimated 750 people attended a prayer vigil for missing teenager Hailey Dunn on Sunday night at Colorado Middle School in Colorado City.

Hailey, 13, was last seen walking from her home to a friend’s house about 1 p.m. last Monday, according to police. She had intended to spend the night with her friend, Interim Police Chief John Bivins told Colorado City radio station KVMC/KAUM.

A reward for information leading to the teenager’s return started at $1,000 from the Colorado City Police Department, climbed to $4,500 and now stands at $10,000, according to Jim Baum, owner of KVMC/KAUM.

Because police do not believe Hailey has met with foul play, a statewide Amber Alert has not been issued.

According to an article posted Friday on the Colorado City Record website, Bivins said his department considers Hailey a runaway.

“That’s what the evidence shows at the time,” Bivins said.

But the more days Dunn stays missing, the concern continues to grow.

“To me, I think it’d be more than just considered runaway,” Mitchell County Sheriff Patrick Toombs told the Reporter-News on Sunday night. His agency has interviewed several of Hailey’s classmates to help Colorado City police. Toombs said Texas Rangers also have assisted in the case.

While Toombs said his agency was only assisting Colorado City, Hailey’s disappearance remains a mystery, he said.

“It’s really unknown,” Toombs said. He said he wasn’t aware that anything has been ruled out, calling some sort of abduction or coercion “still a possibility.”

“But, right now, we have not been able to confirm or deny that, of how she disappeared from town,” Toombs said.

However, the Mitchell County community, Baum said, is gravely concerned for the teen’s safety.

“The people who knew her and her character do not believe she’d just take off and run away,” he said. “It doesn’t fit.

“They feel like there is foul play.”

Baum said Hailey’s mother became alarmed about her daughter’s whereabouts when she did not return home Tuesday.

“It just wasn’t like her” to vanish, Baum said. “She is real popular with her teachers and with those she goes to school with.”

Baum said volunteers took part in a door-to-door search for Hailey.

He said there were about 800 candles ready for the Sunday night prayer vigil, at which several ministers spoke and asked those attending to pray for Hailey, her family and “those she might be with.”

Hailey is 5-foot-1 and 120 pounds.

Her eyes are hazel and her hair is described as brown with blondish streaks.

Hailey Darlene Dunn's parents say she disappeared on December 27th and had plans to go to a friend's house, but never made it. According to a flyer sent to us by a Mitchell County radio station, an anonymous reward that began as $1,000 has now grown to $10,000 and is being offered for Hailey's safe return or information. An anonymous reward that began as $1,000 has now grown to $10,000. Isn't that a bit bizare? This is a small town of 4200 residents, seven sworn police officers and six civilian positions and a 1300-bed medium security prison. Thats a jail that equals 1/3 of the town population. There is also no evidance that she wasn't abducted, in fact at this point there is no evidance of anything. However, this child was last seen 13 blocks from her home (in the business district) along a major highway. She was to spend the night with a friend, but never showed up. She lives less than four blocks from the Colorado City Police Station. There is NO information on their website about Hailey or even how to go about reporting a missing child. Aside from some small articles in local papers the most news coverage has been via websites.

Help bring this child home. Dunn is a white female, 5'1' with hazel eyes and brown hair and pierced ears. She was last seen wearing navy blue sweat pants, a short sleeve light colored T-shirt and pink and white tennis shoes.

Mom by phone on NG show..Mom's boyfriend was the last person to have seen Hailey..hmmmmm....
he told mom that Hailey told him to tell her mother that she was going to her dad's house first and then spending the night at a girl friend's house...has not been seen since..never went to dad's house and didn't go to girlfriends house....
I can't help but wonder about the boyfriend... the mom didn't check on the girl until Tuesday...this little girl is only 13..shouldn't she have been checked on sooner....

I guess it depends on how reliable she was and how well Mom believed the boyfriend.
 I can't believe the police, without any proof, decided she was a runaway. At 13 she should have at least have been considered endangered.

WTH is wrong with parents these days.  My 14yo son would not be allowed anywhere without me or his Dad taking him to or picking him up from anywhere unless a trusted Gparent!  I don't even allow my son's friends parents to pick him up.  I had him and WE are devoted to him!  Sooooom, another boyfriend is the reliable source as to where this child went!  I'm thinking maybe LE should have jumped on him ASAP!  Wonder how long ago Mommy moved Mr. Wonderful in their home?

Why are we just hearing about this just now when a week of precious time has passed?? Ugh!!

Texas Rangers Get Involved In Hunt For Missing Colorado City Teen

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Texas Rangers and national media are now involved in the hunt for a Colorado City teen, who's been missing since December 27th.

Monday, Rangers met with Colorado City Police and the Mitchell County Sheriff for hours.

Though they're pretty tight lipped about the investigation they did issue a generic statement that they are investigating Hailey Darlene Dunn's disappearance as a missing person.

She was last seen December 27th, after telling her mother's boyfriend she planned to spend the night at a friends.

KTXS talked to that friend who said she had no idea Hailey was coming over. ::MonkeyNoNo::

Her parents say they're now beginning to fear the worst.

"There's a chance somebody abducted her," Hailey's mother Billie Jean Dunn told us, "that's in the back of my mind because of the fact that she didn't take anything and because this is so out of her character. I'm pretty terrified of that."

Colorado Police Chief read aloud this statement, "Officers are working this as a missing persons investigation, and pursuing leads to find Hailey...we will not rest until Hailey is found. If anyone has any information on her whereabouts, they are to contact the Colorado City Police Department at 325-728-5294.

There is a $10,000 reward being offered for Hailey's safe return.

Does anyone know if the boyfriend even went to work that day? he could have had all day to do something with Hailey..Why would this girl have the "freedom" shall we say to say to the boyfriend , tell my mom that I am staying the night at so and so's house...at her age? are there other kids in the house? something is amiss here in my mind and sorry but I start with the boyfriend...if he is innocent then give me a spanking, but we have seen too many cases where the step parent/boyfriend/girlfriend have harmed "missing" children...jmo

My red flags went up with the information about the live-in boyfriend too. Also, the fact the mom knew Hailey hadn't checked in that night and did not begin to worry until the next day made me have cold chills. I cannot imagine how that could be.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

A neighbor saw Hailey talking on the phone around noon in the yard.  Phone records will provide info to who she was talking to.  Hailey supposedly told the boy friend to tell her mother she was spending the night with a friend.  She also said she was going to her father's house first and then never made it.  I thought he lived across the street.  The boyfriend has alot of explaining to do because it doesn't look good for him. Red flag, but JMOO.

Colorado City Ups Reward To $25,000 For Return Of Hailey Dunn

COLORADO CITY, Texas --

Officials with the city of Colorado City tell KTXS News that the reward has been upped from $10,000 to $25,000 for the return of missing teen Hailey Dunn.

The city manager of Colorado City also told our crew on the scene that the city has three times asked that an Amber Alert to be issued, but the request has been denied three times.

Dunn was last seen Dec. 27. The Colorado Middle School student told her mother's boyfriend she was spending the night at a friend's house. However, she did not spend the night there, and she hasn't been seen since.

If anyone has any information on her whereabouts, they are to contact the Colorado City Police Department at 325-728-5294.

Makes you wonder if he did go to work, got fired and took his anger out on the child......just a theory but way too many huge inconstiencies, I can see forgetting small details but these are HUGE IMO. I feel the same way as kids do get snatched but even with the mom being naive, she should still be showing far more emotion, and yeah the BF looks really hinky. the mother said that her boyfriend had been at work, got home around 3 and saw Hailey then..today she said that she had not said that..that boyfriend had been at his mothers all day...then she said that he had gone to work but got into an argument and left and went to his mothers for the day...
Mom didn't have anything to do with her daughter going missing in my opinion, but I think that bio dad may suspect boyfriend and that is why he looked so angry...I think boyfriend has some explaining..jmo

MICHAEL BOARD, REPORTER, WOAI NEWSRADIO: She was last seen a week ago, Nancy. It`s been a week since anybody has seen this beautiful little 13-year-old girl. About 3:00 last Monday, it`s the last time anybody ever saw her alive.

There`s no sign of what happened to her, no sign that she was going anywhere. She didn`t take anything with her when she left her house. No sign of what happened to this girl.

GRACE: Joining me right now is Hailey`s mother. This is Billie Dunn joining us from Dunn, Texas.

DUNN: Thank you for having me on the show.

DUNN: Four to five blocks. It wasn`t rare for Hailey to walk a short distance during daylight. She wasn`t allowed out after dark especially to walk, but she only had four to five blocks to go.

GRACE: Tell me what happened the day she went missing, Miss Dunn.

DUNN: She went missing on Monday while I was at work. My boyfriend - - he came home from work about 3:00 -- or he got to my house about 3:00. And he`s seen Hailey. Hailey was there. She told him, I`m running across the street to my dad`s house for a few minutes but I`m going Mary Beth`s, and I`m staying the night there. Let my mom know.

So that evening when he picked me up from work, we got home, we were getting ready for bed. I didn`t get worried when I hadn`t heard from Hailey. I thought she was at Mary Beth`s. I was kind of upset that she didn`t call and confirm it with me, but not worried at that point.

Tuesday, I was at work again, I left my cell phone at home for my kids to use when I`m working. So Tuesday, I called my son. I said tell Hailey text the little girl, her friend, tell Hailey she needs to go ahead and get home. This was around lunch. My son called me back within a few minutes and she said, mom, she said Hailey never made it over there. She never spent the night.

So at that point I called Hailey`s dad and found out she didn`t over there and she didn`t stay the night with him. I left from work and went to the police station in Colorado City and reported her missing.

GRACE: Everyone, you are seeing pictures of a 13-year-old little cheerleader who by all accounts leaves home to go four to six blocks to a sleepover with a friend. She never makes it.

Now this would have been, Miss Dunn, the Tuesday following Christmas on Saturday?

DUNN: Right. She was last seen the 27th.

GRACE: And your boyfriend says what time was it she left the home?

DUNN: Right around 3:15.

GRACE: Did she have a cell phone?

DUNN: No, she didn`t have her own cell phone.

GRACE: Does she go online?

DUNN: Yes, she has a Facebook.

GRACE: Have the police looked at her Facebook account?

DUNN: They have. I know investigators are still doing a lot. It doesn`t look like -- they`re not sure if Hailey`s logged in any. We`re going to talk with investigators again tonight. They finally got some Texas rangers involved just barely yesterday, six days later. So we do finally have the Texas rangers help. And that makes me feel a lot better.

GRACE: Thank god for that.

DUNN: Right.

GRACE: So this is the Tuesday afternoon after Christmas. Let me ask you this. Did anyone see her other than your boyfriend that day?

DUNN: There were some people came forward, a neighbor saw her around lunchtime on Tuesday out in my backyard talking on the cell phone.

DUNN: I mean Monday, I`m sorry.

What do we do, Marc?

KLAAS: Well, first of all, the local police chief suggested that the evidence indicates that she ran away. As far as I can tell, there`s absolutely no evidence. So I really don`t know how he can say that.

That is an `80s, mid-`90s answer to a very relevant question today, what is happening to our little girls?

GRACE: Look. Look, Marc. Marc, look at the sex offenders in this area. This girl did not run away.

KLAAS: Listen, this case reminds me of others. Lindsey Baum, Ashley Pond, Amanda Ghettis (ph), three girls who left home to go from point A to point B, that never got to point B. In the case of the first -- in the case of Amanda and Ashley, it was a local pervert who had kidnapped and murdered the children.

In the case of Lindsey Baum it still has not been solved. They still say it might be a runaway. I don`t believe it in any of these cases.

I hope that this little girl is ok...praying and hoping really really hard...

Red flags went up for me when I heard Hailey's mom say her boyfriend got into a fight at work that day and left early.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

I don't think mom knew the boyfriend got fired (or walked off after a fight) from his job on Monday until AFTER she'd said he'd come home from work around 3pm on Nancy's show.

Big red flag, imo.  He's been lying to mom.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

She did admit saying it, and then she said "I know now" that he'd left his job by 6:30am and went to his mothers house.  She said his mother has confirmed that he was there all day.

I think mom knows she's been lied to by BF, and there's a big hinkey stinkey going on IMO.

BF has agreed to take a polygraph, it's scheduled for in the morning.

Since police are checking the cell phones of mom (that Haley had that day) and boyfriend, they should know by now if they communicated that day.

Boyfriend is key here. I agree Mom is naive but she seems exhausted. I think Bio Dad and Mom are scared and frustrated, jmo. Boyfriend should have been poly'd first day.

Bloodhounds Track Dunn's Scent to Colorado City Motel

Bloodhounds have been brought in during the search for missing 13-year-old Hailey Dunn of Colorado City, according to Dunn's mother.

According to the Nance Grace program on "HLN," bloodhounds were able to track Hailey's scent from her neighborhood to the nearby Western Suites, 2233 Vine Street.


Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn, confirmed that dogs were brought in and indeed tracked Hailey's scent to the hotel. Local authorities have not yet confirmed this information to the news media, according to KTAB's Priscilla Luong.

Dunn told the program that law enforcement was in the process of reviewing surveillance video from the motel.

Hailey's mother also says authorities told her that someone claims to have spotted her daughter, Hailey's friend "Mary Beth," and a boy she didn't recognize Monday evening in town. Hailey's last confirmed sighting was by her mother's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, at 3 p.m. Monday.

Dunn also told Nancy Grace both her and her boyfriend's cell phones were seized by authorities in hopes of tracking any calls that Hailey might have made.

Mark Klaas, founder of Klasskids, said the search for Hailey has been "horribly mismanaged." Klaas said Billie Dunn's boyfriend needs to march into the police stations and demand to receive a polygraph test.

According to Billie Dunn, Shawn Adkins is set up to take a polygraph test Wednesday morning.

New information was also revealed during the program about what Adkins did prior to Hailey's disappearance. Billie Dunn says Adkins was involved in a "blow up" at work Monday morning and was then released from his job.

During the epsiode, Grace and her panelists seemed to point the finger at Adkins. Earlier in the day, Adkins told KTAB's Priscilla Luong he'd never hurt the child.

"I could never harm Hailey," said Adkins. "I just want her to come home."

COLORADO CITY, TX (KCBD) - The search continues for a missing Colorado City girl. Texas Rangers and national media are now involved in the hunt for 13-year-old Hailey Dunn. She has been missing for more than a week.

Authorities were initially considering this a possible runaway case. Yesterday Colorado City police held a press conference and said that they were now considering Hailey a missing person.

Colorado City police, Mitchell County Sheriffs, Snyder police and Texas Rangers are all involved in the investigation.

Dunn was last seen leaving her house on December 27th around 3 p.m. Her mother's boyfriend Shawn Adkins said she was headed to her father's house and then to her friend Mary Beth's home just 5 blocks away. She never made it.

Authorities have been in meetings for the last two days following leads to get answers on what happened to the young girl.

"Texas Rangers are finally involved. I'm very happy about that, and I hope Colorado City Police Department isn't too proud to accept help from larger cities who may have some more experience or can give some insight, can come in and take a look and see that maybe, just anything simple hadn't been done yet," said Hailey's mother Billie Jean.

Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer told us both Hailey's father and friend Mary Beth said they weren't expecting a visit from Hailey. Police have not named any suspects as of Tuesday.

Hailey Dunn disappeared without a trace until bloodhounds searched the area. Officials say the dogs picked up her scent near the Western Suites off Interstate 20. Even though the dogs responded strongly to the area, there was no sign of Hailey. She was last seen with her mother's boyfriend.

Investigators say Hailey's mother's boyfriend could not take a polygraph because he was on prescription drugs. Billie Jean told Nancy Grace that her boyfriend, Adkins, would take a polygraph test Wednesday morning. ::MonkeyEek::

A $10,000 reward was raised to $25,000 for any information that will lead to Hailey's safe return.

Authorities in Colorado City requested an amber alert to be issued in the case but were denied 3 times for failing to meet the criteria. Kampfer said the missing criteria included: knowledge of a suspect, location of the abduction, description of a vehicle, and route or direction of travel.

Hailey's friends spoke out to television station KTSX in Abilene. One friend held back tears and said it was "hurtful, painful. We just want her home. She was my best friend." Another said, "I hope she comes home safely. Her Mom and Dad miss her, and so do we."

Hailey Dunn is 13 years old and weighs about 120 pounds. She has hazel eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing navy blue sweat pants, a light colored t-shirt, and pink and white tennis shoes.

To me it seems like this is saying a woman is the witness, which would make her the last person to see Hailey and not the BF.  Additionally, if this is to be believed then Mary Beth would be lying, but to what end.  I tend to be overly suspicious, but I'd love to know the connection between that eyewitness and the BF. 

Does anyone know or have heard that SA mom's BF possibly has already taken the poly and it was inconclusive{supposedly because of prescription meds}..and that he is supposed to Re-Tested tomorrow?

When to issue an Amber Alert

Each state AMBER Alert plan has its own criteria for issuing AMBER Alerts. The PROTECT Act, passed in 2003, which established the role of AMBER Alert Coordinator within the Department of Justice (DOJ), calls for DOJ to issue minimum standards or guidelines for AMBER Alerts that states can adopt voluntarily. DOJ’s guidance on criteria for issuing AMBER Alerts is:

- Law enforcement must confirm that an abduction has taken place.

- The child is at risk of serious injury or death.

- There is sufficient descriptive information of child, captor, or captor’s vehicle to issue an alert.

- The child must be 17 years old or younger.

COLORADO CITY — The Colorado City police chief said his department has attempted three times to get an Amber Alert issued for Hailey Dunn, a 13-year-old middle school student who was reported missing Dec. 28, but the requests have been denied.

“In each of the three requests, we’ve been told that there is not enough information currently available about Hailey’s disappearance to issue an Amber Alert,” Police Chief John Bivens said. “The minimum standard for creating an Amber Alert is knowledge of a suspect, a description of a vehicle involved in an abduction, and/or a route and direction of travel.”

Bivens said the department will continue to pursue issuance of an alert with each new piece of evidence uncovered.

On Friday, bloodhounds were taken to the six motels in Colorado City. At Western Suites, which is located at 2233 Vine Street and is adjacent to Interstate 20 and near the Dunn home, the dogs picked up on Dunn’s scent in the parking lot, City Manager Pete Kampfer said Tuesday night.

The scent led to a door of a ground-floor room at the two-level motel that opened in July, he said, but there the trail stopped. A search of the 24 suites produced no other evidence, he said.

Cristie Roye, manager of Western Suites, said police studied surveillance tapes but did not see the missing teen. Motel staff, she said, did not recall seeing the teenager, either.

A copy of the missing person flyer distributed throughout the city was posted on the office door.

Kampfer also said Tuesday that the reward for information leading to the whereabouts of the teenager had grown past $10,000 but has not yet reached the $25,000 figure that was prematurely announced earlier in the day.

Dunn’s disappearance was featured Tuesday on the television show “Nancy Grace.”

The city issued a news release Tuesday stating that the police department is working alongside the Texas Rangers, the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, staff from the office of 32nd District Attorney Ann Reed, and other law enforcement departments in the region. The news release also said the department has done so since “shortly after the start of their initial work on the case.”

“From the start, our department and our colleagues from the other law enforcement and judicial agencies that have joined our effort have treated Hailey’s case as one of a missing person,” Kampfer said. “We’ve made no assumptions as to what occurred, intentionally focusing on rapidly collecting facts and using these facts to guide our work.”

He said that in the early stages of the investigation, alerts were distributed to both the National Crime Information Center and Texas Crime Information Center systems, which are computer networks established to link law enforcement personnel across the country and state. They also transmitted the missing person report through COPsync, a system that connects law enforcement officials in the region.

“We’re applying all the personnel and other resources necessary and appropriate to our work in finding Hailey, with no plans of letting up,” Kampfer continued. “This is a night-and-day endeavor for us all.”

Hailey’s mother, Billie Dunn, said she reported Hailey missing when she determined the teenager had not spent the night at a friend’s house. Hailey Dunn reportedly had told Billie Dunn’s boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, who lives in the home, of her destination.

Billie Dunn has said she doesn’t believe her daughter would run away, but hopes she has and is simply scared to come home.

Local law enforcement officials have conducted investigations of people and places in the immediate area of Hailey Dunn’s home, including all registered sex offenders in the city, according to Kampfer.

Meanwhile, school will resume Thursday for students at Colorado Middle School, where Dunn is enrolled as an eighth-grader.

“She is well liked by students and staff,” said Principal Mark Merrell, mentioning Hailey Dunn’s bubbly personality.

Her American history teacher, Andra Maxwell, said the teen made good grades and participated in many activities, “anything she could get involved in.” She is a member of the band, a cheerleader and a member of the volleyball team, Maxwell and Merrell said.

“She is a very important part of the student body,” Maxwell said of the missing teen. “She is a ray of sunshine. She really is.”

Maxwell said teachers and staff at the school were concerned about the teen’s well-being and about her family.

“Everyone is concerned here, and we’re doing everything we can to help,” she said.

In my opinion, an amber alert should be issued for ANY missing child..what is the harm in getting the word out about a child missing an hour or a day???? someone could see the picture of the child and it could be crucial in the first hours!!

The mom on the NG show  said that she had not spoken to Mary Beth about Hailey being with her and the boyfriend that the eye witness said that she saw..the eye witness did not recognize the boyfriend..I thought that is what I heard anyways..I wondered at the time why Mom did not question Mary Beth as this could be a very important lead as to who saw Hailey last (Mary Beth and a boy)and who was the boy with Mary Beth and Hailey...
I think that the mom and dad are hurting badly and are not involved in Hailey's disappearance...The father seemed like he wanted to beat the heck outta someone to get some answers as to where his little girl is and I think I know who his anger was directed at...the boyfriend...jmo...

If Hailey's scent was followed by the hounds to this hotel, could they get the hounds to follow the BF scent and see if it leads to the same place?  Could they do that?

That makes sense to me because the dog handler on NG said the dogs can even figure out backtracking.  I just don't understand the mother not questioning Mary Beth more.  If a witness actually saw the 3 after dark, then the boyfriend is in the clear and not the last person to see Hailey.  Who is this witness and who is the boy she didn't recognize?

Colorado City - Texas Rangers, sheriff deputies, police and your average citizen are all searching for 13-year-old Hailey Dunn who has been missing for 10 days now.

Police are considering Hailey a missing person and according to CNN's Nancy Grace, Hailey's mother's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, will be taking a polygraph exam this morning, but police have not released any suspects at this time. Investigators had said earlier that he could not take a polygraph because of prescription drugs.

The current reward for information leading to Hailey being returned home has been raised to $25,000.

Back on December 27th, Adkins had said Hailey was heading to her father's house and then to her friend Mary Beth's house. Police say neither the father nor Mary Beth said they were expecting a visit from Hailey.

Three times, the Colorado City authorities have been requesting an Amber Alert, but have been denied three times for failing to meet the criteria.

The four criteria for an Amber Alert to be issued in Texas are:
1. The child must be 17-year-old or younger, his or her whereabouts are unknown and the disappearance has been determined to be unwilling which poses a credible threat to a child's safety and health.
· If abducted by a parent or legal guardian, if the abduction happened in the course of an attempted murder or murder?
· If the child is 13 years old or younger, who was taken (willingly or unwillingly) without permission from the care and custody of a parent or legal guardian, by:
· Someone unrelated and more than three years older, another parent or legal guardian who attempted or committed murder at the time of the abduction?

2. The child is in immediate danger of sexual assault, death or serious bodily injury.

3. A preliminary investigation verified the abduction and eliminated alternative explanations for the child’s disappearance.

4. Is sufficient information available to disseminate to the public to help such as a description of the child, the captor or the captor's vehicle as well as route or direction of travel.

I've wondered about Hailey's friend's story but my suspicion has always been on the boyfriend just because he was the last one to see her and his story just at the time it didn't add up. After watching Nancy Grace tonight and hearing that the boyfriend is being polyed tomorrow and the things that Hailey's mom was saying about the friend I'm back at square one. My suspicion is back on the friend and I agree 110% with Susan Moss that they need hone in on that area. Something is NOT adding up there.

I know that the boyfriend seems hinky and everything and I totally get why people might suspect him but I just don't know. Giving the facts we have there are more hinky things with the friends story than the boyfriends. The only thing that was off about the boyfriends story is the working situation and that was it.

This case started over with the story of Hailey staying overnight at the friends house. Family of Hailey have that she'd never act out and that she was good in school etc. Why would this girl who everyone is saying is a good kid lie about where she was going? This is why I think something is hinky with MB the friend of Hailey. She claims Hailey never showed up there yet Hailey's scent was on HER doorstep! This is credible we KNOW that this is credible that her scent was led to the friends house.

Now we have in my opinion a credible siting by someone who KNOWS Hailey and KNOWS Hailey's friend MB that saw them on Monday evening up on that road. All three Hailey, MB, and MBs boyfriend were seen by someone who knows them personally. This isn't someone who just came upon the case and is thinking they saw them this someone who knows them personally! JMO but that speaks volume.

I think they need to search the friends house or something because something is not right. Why not take the greyhound dogs and get the scent of the friend and the friends boyfriend to see if their scent leads to that motel? Has MB's boyfriend been checked into and how old is MB's boyfriend? Where were they going that night that they were out that late? Did something happen to Hailey like she went missing or something when she was with them and the kids freaked out? Something is NOT right with that friend.

What's a thirteen yr old girl doing hanging with a guy with thoughts like that. I wonder if the "Relax, relax" post was in reference to Hailey.. ::MonkeyNoNo::

I believe this is the Mom's boyfriend...not the girls.  Right?  Perhaps we should refer the Mom's boyfriend by his initials to avoid confusion.

ITA.  I think tere is still A LOT to be reviewed by LE here.  The witness who obviously knew who Hailey and MB were, saw them and their account needs to be looked over thoroughly.  Also...I haven't heard any mention whether friends of Hailey's have stated whether SHE had a boyfriend or not?  Or someone she was interested in that she might have gone off with.  I just wonder if maybe she told her mom she was going to a friends house but really went to meet a boy somewhere?  You never know.  JMO

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Officials in Colorado City are continuing their efforts to discover evidence related to the disappearance of 13-year-old Colorado Middle School student Hailey Dunn.

Officials confirmed Wednesday that Shawn Adkins, the boyfriend of Hailey’s mother, has been administered a polygraph test. He was reportedly the last person who saw Hailey before she disappeared on Dec. 27.

Officials also confirmed that Hailey’s home is being searched Wednesday for any clues that may have been missed earlier.

The search was being conducted by the Texas Rangers, who searched the home and spent 10 minutes in an outdoor storage shed.

Hailey was last seen on Dec. 27 when she reportedly told Adkins that she was spending the night with a friend.

However, she never made it to the friend’s house, and the friend has since told KTXS News that she didn’t know Hailey was coming – that they hadn’t made plans for her to spend the night.

Hailey’s mother, Billie Dunn, has said her daughter may have spoken to friends on Dec. 27 after her last reported sighting.

According to the “Nancy Grace” television show, aired Tuesday night, bloodhounds have been used and possibly tracked Hailey’s scent to a local motel – although a search of the motel and review of the motel security videotaped apparently revealed no other evidence.

No statewide Amber Alert has been issued because the case has not met the criteria for issuing such an alert.

State officials have three times refused to issue the Amber Alert, Colorado City officials say, because there is no physical evidence to show that Hailey has been abducted or that she is facing physical harm.

A reward for Hailey’s return has now grown to $25,000.

And I don't get why he needed to go to Hailey's Mom's house if she was at work if he didn't live there.

Until Jan. 3, a week after she disappeared on December 27, 13-year-old Colorado City, TX middle school cheerleader Hailey Dunn was classified as a runaway. Police Chief John Bevins declaration has been parroted by local media, most notably local radio station owner Jim Baum, who told the local NBC affiliate, "To tell you the truth, this is the first time, and I've been here 30 years, that we've had a runaway like this. It's so uncommon”. Calling a missing child a runaway has always been law enforcement’s fallback position. It allows them to defer responsibility and puts the onus of recovery on the shoulders of the family, because runaways are considered a family issue. This action also reflects an exaggerated and distorted sense of what is happening to America’s children. 

A child who seemingly disappears off the face of the earth deserves our attention, not our indifference. Like Ashley Pond, Miranda Gaddis, and Lindsey Baum before her Hailey stepped out of her front door and vanished. She was headed, first to her dad’s house across the street from where she lived with her mom, and then to a girlfriends home to spend the night. She never arrived. 

In McCleary, Washington ten-year-old Lindsey Baum was walking home from her girlfriend’s house on June 26, 2009 and is still missing.  In 2002, on January 9, Oregon City, Oregon resident, twelve-year-old Ashley Pond disappeared after leaving for school. Her friend and schoolmate thirteen-year-old Miranda Gaddis vanished from the same location two months later, on May 8. Neighbor Ward Weaver was arrested on August 13. Ashley’s body was found buried under a concrete slab in Weaver’s back yard. Miranda was found in a box in his tool shed. Like his father before him, Ward Weaver sits on death row awaiting an execution that will never occur.

 Hailey Dunn’s family, friends, school, teachers and other kids parents are the only thing that given this case traction. They took a stand and said, “Not in our community.” A temporary search center was established at the Colorado City Middle School cafeteria for volunteers wanting to help. They have saturated the community with thousands of flyers. An estimated 750 people, out of a population of 2,500 turned out for a prayer vigil on the evening of Jan. 2. An anonymous reward that began at $1,000 for Hailey’s safe return has now been raised to $25,000. Members of the community created a Facebook page for Hailey, and many others, including me, have put photos of Hailey in their profile pictures. 

The Police Chief said that all of the evidence points to Hailey being a runaway. However, there is no evidence, and his declaration is based solely upon statistics. She didn’t tell any of her friends that she was going to run away. She hadn’t threatened her parents that she was going to run away. Nobody saw her run away. She didn’t take anything with her. She had never before runaway. Thirteen-year-old Hailey Dunn was classified as a runaway due to a total lack of evidence, not the preponderance of evidence.

According to the National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Throwaway Children (NISMART-2), considered to be the definitive publication on missing child statistics, “The total number of children who were missing from their caretakers in 1999, including children who were reported missing is estimated to be 797,500”. Of these 357,600 (45%) were runaway/throwaway situations. Therefore, if you conclude that a missing child has runaway you will be right about half the time. But, that does not mean that you turn your back on those children. Given what we know about violence in America and the challenges that our kids face, it is our duty as responsible adults to recover and help kids who have run away or thrown out of their homes.

Amber DuBois was thought to be a runaway by LE, which slowed down the search for her.  John Gardner abducted Amber while she was walking to school and raped and murdered her.   ::MonkeyNoNo::  There are other cases where similar things have happened.  Yes, there are runaways, but I think we need to err on the side of caution, with so many predators out there.  And maybe some went willingly initially or were lured and got in over their heads.  It's sad.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

Searchers from Texas Department of Criminal Justice Wallace/Ware units were out on horseback and foot today looking for possible clues to the disappearance of Hailey Dunn.

TDCJ officers searched a heavily wooded area on the western edge of town Wednesday morning, January 6, according to TDCJ Warden Matt Kennolly.

The search along the Colorado River continued after lunch on foot along Colorado City's southern edge from the prison to Business I-20 toward town.

The search was made at the request of the Texas Rangers, who are working with local law enforcement agencies.

The multi-agency task force have set up an operations outpost in the Mitchell County courthouse.

Mark Klaas is a man on a mission.. He is not stopped or even slowed down by the "politics" of LE agencies across our country..Infact, if anything it seems to make him even more determined in his mission of protecting, aiding, recovering, AND giving a voice to those who otherwise would be left silent..all of this done for the future of this country...OUR CHILDREN..

I admire and am in awe of Mark Klaas and his dedication to children of all ages, races, socioeconomic classes, etc, etc.. Continuing to ensure that his own precious Polly's short life here on this earth and her tragic, horrific abduction and death were not in vain.. He has gone above and beyond over and over, time and time again making little Polly's tragedy indirectly save many, many, many other parents' children's lives.. No, it doesn't make for even one second her tragic death worth all of these other children that Polly's father has saved..Its not looked at in those terms..Its taking a horrific situation, that of which is every parent's absolute worst of nightmares, that which Mark had no control over, an evil entering their lives hidden under the dark of night and ripped Polly from Mark and many other family that love and adore Polly..forever..gone in the blink of an eye.. Mark Has made the absolute best of the most horrific situation that any human can comprehend..whereas many parents become consumed with the anger, the hurt, the vengeance{all of which I am quite certain that Mark has felt and gone through all of those exact feelings and emotions}, but where Mark differs is that he took all of that hurt, anger, vengeance, resentment and has used all of that for these many years to fuel his dedication to the many other children that may or may not have been in or even died at the hands of evil much like Polly.. He has used his any/all of what are normally negative feelings and emotions that many times ruin the remainder of a parents life as well as their surviving children's' lives..unable to ever get past those emotions..Mark has used and turned all of these potentially negative, destructive, and damning feelings, emotions, etc and done for children across of our country what the work of hundreds of people and manpower weren't able to do..

He continues to make a difference each and every day of his life here on this earth.. I don't know his mind, but I do know his heart, its an open book for all to see that Mark Klaas will do and has done for the children of our country.. pushing for tougher laws, demanding better and immediate attention and manpower on those crucial moments and early hours of a child's disappearance/abduction, and crisscrossing this country spreading the word of "protect your children from the evils of this world"..

Mark Klaas is a man in a complete "class" of his own.. A man who does all of these things selflessly and genuinely FOR OUR CHILDREN AND NOT FOR FAME, NOR RECOGNITION.. HE IS A MAN AS I SAID THAT I ADMIRE AND AM AWE OF.. HE IS A MAN I WOULD BE PROUD TO SAY THAT I KNEW...

Interesting they are focusing on the south end of town when the bloodhounds were tracking her to the north part of town near the interstate at the hotel. Her house is in-between the area they note as searching here and the hotel. Guess it doesn't matter...the whole town needs to be turned upside down til they find her.  It's such a small town, hopefully they can find something soon.  I wonder which direction from her house her friend MB lived?

A small Texas town is upset that the state is refusing to issue an Amber Alert for a 13-year-old cheerleader who has been missing for more than a week.


The Colorado City Police have requested the alert three times since Hailey Dunn, a middle school student, was reported missing Dec. 28 by her mother, Billie Dunn.

The girl was thought to be spending Monday night at a nearby friend's home, but did not return home the next morning, the police said. The friend later said she was not expecting a visit from Dunn.

The cheerleader headed out around 3:15 p.m. on Dec. 27, first going to her dad's house and then supposedly to the friend's house.

Billie Dunn's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, was the last person to see the girl, the mother told police. It was Adkins who reportedly said the girl was spending the night at a friend's home. Adkins was scheduled to take a polygraph exam today.

"We can't say one way or another if she is abducted or is a runway," City Manager Peter Kampfer told ABC News. "One of the requirements that they have for an Amber Alert in the state is that there is a witness or we have some sort of evidence that she's been picked up or been threatened. That's one of the qualifiers."

Kampfer is frustrated by the state's guidelines for issuing alerts at a time when help is needed.

"I would like to see it a little bit broadened. I don't hear many Amber Alerts in this area of Texas. In fact, I can't remember the last one I've heard," he told ABC News. "You'd like to be able to think you could invoke a request and get some help."

Police Chief John Bivens said the minimum standard for creating an Amber Alert is "knowledge of a suspect, a description of a vehicle involved in an abduction and/or a route and direction of travel."

Right now, the town does not have such information.

"We're having an ongoing investigation. As of today we're just following up on the initial leads and of course we have leads that are coming in from the public," Kampfer said. "We have nothing substantive at this time."

This case is currently being investigated by the local police, county sheriff and the Texas Rangers.

On Friday, bloodhounds were taken to the six motels in Colorado City. At one of them, the Western Suites, which is adjacent to Interstate 20 and near the Dunn home, the dogs picked up on the girl's scent in the parking lot. It led to a ground-floor room, but no further. A search of all 24 rooms produced no other evidence.

Hailey Dunn Disappearance Becomes National Story

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- The search for missing Colorado City eighth-grader Hailey Dunn made the national media on Tuesday night.

Hailey was featured on the HNL Network national cable show "Nancy Grace." The show devoted most of the entire hour to the case of the 13-year-old Dunn, who disappeared on Dec. 27.

Grace spoke to experts about missing children’s cases and grilled Hailey’s mother, Billie, and her father, Clint Dunn.

Billie Dunn told Grace that bloodhounds were used over the weekend and that the dogs may have tracked Hailey’s scent to a local motel.

Authorities then searched the rooms at the motel and the motel security camera footage, but no other evidence was obtained.

Colorado City Manager Pete Kampfer told KTXS that the Grace segment was “sensationalized” and that there were several inaccuracies aired on the show.

Texas Teen Vanishes Into Thin Air Days After Christmas
Hailey Dunn was said to be spending the night at a friend’s house on the evening of Monday, Dec. 27, 2010. But when the 13-year-old didn’t come home the next morning, Billie Dunn – Hailey’s mother – knew something was wrong. Cops say she immediately filed a missing persons report after learning Hailey’s friend wasn’t even expecting her as a visitor.

“From the start, our department and our colleagues from other law enforcement and judicial agencies that have joined our effort have treated Hailey’s case as one of a missing person,” said Colorado City Manager Pete Kampfer. “We’ve made no assumptions as to what occurred, intentionally focusing on rapidly collecting facts and using these facts to guide our work.”

Police say alerts were also distributed to both the NCIC and TCIC systems, computer networks established to link law enforcement personnel across the country and throughout Texas, respectively.

“We’re applying all personnel and other resources necessary and appropriate to our work in finding Hailey, with no plans of letting up,” Kampfer said. “This is a night-and-day endeavor for us all.”

Now the Colorado City Police has even enlisted the help of the Texas Rangers to help locate the missing 13-year-old cheerleader. Just speculating but my hubby used to work frequently in the Midland/Odessa area. There is allot of drilling activity in the area and hotels are needed for lodging for those who work in various capacities in the oilfield. So strangers to the community would not be abnormal with all of the oilfield activity.
The dogs tracking to the hotel is very disturbing to me. Someone could have been driving through town or met up with her and asked for directions and grabbed her, maybe stopped back at the hotel and grabbed their belongings and took off. It wouldn't make sense for SA to bring Hailey to a local hotel, surely he isn't that stupid. This is just so baffling and frustrating. How does a 13 year just drop off the face of the earth and no one saw anything.  ::MonkeyMad::

Well written Southerngrl ::MonkeyAngel:: It's a shame that this was to be his destiny. John Walsh is another that comes to mind. I  highly respect the strength and passion they have put forth into other missing children cases. I think I would have just shriveled up in a little ball after all they have endured.

Mother’s Boyfriend Takes Polygraph; Home Reportedly Searched

The boyfriend of missing 13-year-old cheerleader Hailey Dunn’s mother was brought to the Colorado City law enforcement center this morning for a polygraph exam, according to CNN affiliate KTAB. Hailey’s mother Billie Dunn told Nancy Grace last night that her boyfriend Shane Adkins, the last person known to have seen Hailey, would be taking the exam today.


Authorities have also returned to Hailey’s home today to search for clues they may have missed earlier in the investigation, local station KTXS is reporting. According to their report, Texas Rangers searched the house and an outdoor storage shed. The Colorado City Record reported that searchers from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice were looking in a wooded area of town. A TDCJ warden confirmed that the agency participated in a search today, but he could not release any other details.

Hailey disappeared on December 27 after she reportedly told Adkins that she would be spending the night at a friend’s house. Dunn’s mother says the friend has told her she did not see Hailey that day. Dunn did say last night, however, that police have told her a witness reported seeing Hailey, the friend and a boy near a local store on Monday evening. She said police are checking surveillance video in an effort to confirm that sighting.

Also, Colorado City Police Chief John Bivens and City Manager Peter Kampfer are defending local authorities’ handling of the girl’s disappearance, saying that they have asked for a statewide Amber Alert to be issued three times since Hailey was reported missing. Bivens told the Abilene Reporter-News that their requests were denied by the state because the information they have does not meet the minimum standard required. He said they would continue trying to get an alert issued as they uncover new evidence.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, four criteria must be met to activate an Amber Alert for a child 13 years of age or younger:

• The child must be taken, willingly or unwillingly, without permission from the care and custody of a parent or guardian
• The child must be in immediate danger of sexual assault, death or bodily injury
• An abduction must be verified and alternative explanations eliminated
• Sufficient information must be available for the public to help locate the child, a suspect or a vehicle

A DPS spokeswoman confirmed that Colorado City officials have spoken with them several times about issuing an Amber Alert, but they have told them each time that the case does not meet the criteria at this point, mainly because there is not enough information to disseminate to the public to get people to help. She said that an Amber Alert is “a great tool but only one tool in a vast toolbox” of resources available in missing persons cases. In Hailey’s case, the Texas Rangers and crime analysts have been brought in to assist local investigators, and there are a number of steps they can take without issuing a statewide Amber Alert.

The DPS spokeswoman said the agency understands the family’s frustration but the Amber Alert criteria are necessary because they do not want to issue so many alerts that the public stops paying attention to them. Still, she emphasized that the lack of an alert does not mean that nothing is happening and that the Rangers are out there doing everything they can to find Hailey.

At least 20 law enforcement officers from jurisdictions outside Colorado City are investigating the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, including the FBI, Texas Rangers, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the 32nd District Attorney’s office, according to a Colorado City official.

Law enforcement officers were at the home of the missing teen this morning. Later in the day, the teen’s mother, Billie Dunn, was seen being escorted by Colorado City Police Department officers from the police station to the Mitchell County Courthouse.

Hailey reportedly told her mother’s live-in boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, that she was going to spend the night with a friend on Dec. 27. The next day, Billie Dunn contacted police when she realized Hailey was not at her friend’s house.

Earlier today, Billie Dunn and Pete Kampfer, city manager for Colorado City, said Adkins was taking a polygraph test with authorities.

Billie Dunn declined to comment while authorities were in her home and asked reporters to return in the afternoon. But later in the day, Dunn was no longer at home and was seen walking with officers between the Colorado City Police Department and the Mitchell County Courthouse.

The reason she was with law enforcement officers is not immediately clear.

Billie Dunn has said she doesn’t believe her daughter would run away.

“There’s just nothing to work with right now,” he said. “No witnesses saw her, there’s nothing right now to corroborate anything. We’re working all the different leads we have.”

Colorado City police put out a separate Nixle alert on a second child, also a possible runaway, who could not be located. Kampfer said the person was found within eight hours.

Kampfer described most of the police department’s calls as “very traditional” — dogs barking, neighbor complaints and occasionally domestic disturbances.

“We don’t get robberies and murders and that kind of stuff,” he said. “Something gets stolen once in a while ... you’ll get some graffiti or vandalism here, but it’s not daily.”

The Colorado City Police Department, which employs five full-time people, called in Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers, the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, the Snyder Police Department and the district attorney’s office.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Officials in Colorado City are continuing their efforts to discover evidence related to the disappearance of 13-year-old Colorado Middle School student Hailey Dunn.

Officials confirmed Wednesday that Shawn Adkins, the boyfriend of Hailey’s mother, has been administered a polygraph test. He was reportedly the last person who saw Hailey before she disappeared on Dec. 27.

Officials also confirmed that Hailey’s home was searched Wednesday for any clues that may have been missed earlier.

The search was conducted by the Texas Rangers, who looked through the home then spent 10 minutes in an outdoor storage shed.
Hailey was last seen on Dec. 27 when she reportedly told Adkins that she was spending the night with a friend.

However, she never made it to the friend’s house, and the friend has since told KTXS News that she didn’t know Hailey was coming – that they hadn’t made plans for her to spend the night.

Hailey’s mother, Billie Dunn, has said her daughter may have spoken to friends on Dec. 27 after her last reported sighting.
According to the “Nancy Grace” television show, aired Tuesday night, bloodhounds have been used and possibly tracked Hailey’s scent to a local motel – although a search of the motel and review of the motel security videotape apparently revealed no other evidence.

No statewide Amber Alert has been issued because the case has not met the criteria for issuing such an alert.

Hello Monkeys, haven't been able to post on here much since I started back to work but I have a lot of questions already about this situation.....like  :

GRACE: Now when you say that they didn`t know, the friend didn`t know that she was coming for a sleepover, are you talking about Mary Beth and her mother, or just the mother?

Why has the mom not spoken to Mary Beths parents? Only Mary Beth?
The parents really need to get together on this because so many times one child will say they are spending the night with the other and visa versa when really they are both going to be somewhere else.


Also what time would the boyfriend have normally came home if he had of worked his normal shift? would he have came home at 3 o'clock or was this a surpride to Hailey?


Why did the boyfriend SA go to his moms and stay all day and then come home ? Was he even going to tell Hailey's mom that he no longer had a job?

The brother was at a friends house .....did the brothers friends often come over and did Hailey and Mary Beth ever hang out or ride around with these friends?


Was Hailey wearing the same clothes when the person from town saw them as she was reported leaving in ? Did she have on a jacket? And can Mary Beths parents account for Mary Beth during that time?

UPDATE: Several Polygraphs Being Conducted in Dunn Case

Several people have taken lie detector tests in Colorado City today, as investigators try to rule out suspects in the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn.

Shawn Adkins, the boyfriend of Dunn's mother and last person to talk to Hailey, went in for a polygraph around 10 a.m. and was still with investigators from the Texas Rangers at 2 p.m.

According to Billie Jean Dunn, Hailey's mother, Rangers searched the home where she lives with Adkins, Hailey, and Hailey's brother.

According to Billie Dunn, Adkins spoke to Hailey at 3 p.m. on December 27.  Hailey said she was headed to her dad's house, located just across a field, then to a friend's house to spend the night.  She never showed up at either location.

Bloodhounds tracked Hailey's trail Tuesday to a motel located near her home.

The Colorado City Police Department tried to issue an Amber Alert three times, but with no evidence of an abduction, Hailey's case failed to meet the criteria, according to Pete Kampfer, City Manager of Colorado City
"Of course as soon as we get that evidence, and get closer to that, on issuance of an Amber Alert, we're going to be right on top of it," Kampfer said, speaking on behalf of the CCPD.

The reward has grown to $25,000 for tips that lead law enforcement to Hailey Dunn.

All this gnashing of teeth over an Amber Alert by the LE. Is it against the law to go to the media yourself and appeal for them to put out a missing child or teenager? And especially not wait a couple of days before you do.

I guess that's why I got the mom's boyfriend mixed up with Hailey's boyfriend. Mom's boyfriend looks like a young punk.

I would like to know also if the search resulted after the poly.  Wish we had the time search began.  This does not smell well.  What 13 yr. old girl does not pack a bag of some kind to go for an overnight?  I just can't see it.

COLORADO CITY, TX (KCBD) - The search continues for a missing Colorado City girl. Texas Rangers and the FBI are now involved in the hunt for 13-year-old Hailey Dunn. She has been missing for more than a week.

Wednesday, Texas Rangers were searching the Dunn home as well as the backyard. Collecting items, wearing gloves, carrying boxes and duffle bags off of the property. The Rangers carried flashlights and gloves into a shed in the back that had signs on it. Those signs read, "Danger," and "No Unauthorized Personnel." No word yet on what they were looking for, but detectives have been meeting with the family today. Bille Jean, Hailey's mother, left the home with The Rangers at about 1:30PM and family members say that her boyfriend was interviewed by the FBI today.

City Manager, Pete Kampfer, says authorities are investigating specific individuals but he would not disclose any more information. "I know they are working on different leads and some of them could be referred to as suspects or subjects. Authorities are being very aggressive on that of course that's part of the investigation and I do not have those names, but I know they are working on those particular individuals," Kampfer said.

Very anxious to get SA's poly results!!!  He went in at 10am and still there at 2pm and then Mom was seen leaving home escorted by LE.  One could suppose that SA  didn't do so well on polygraph so they brought Mom in to give her results first?  Dunno about this one but I do feel Mom's bf gives off a real hinky vibe.  I may owe him an aplogy and will honestly give him one but I just don't think this is going to turn out well.  I so wish this child has run away, rebelling, whatever, and now to embarrassed/ashamed/scared to call home now.    Praying for her and her family.

Just wanted to say, I have 2 13 yr old granddaughters. One will not leave the house for the night unless she has everything but the kitchen sink. The other will go to her girlfriends house with just the clothes on her back. I am not sure if the one would do that with just a casual friend. But according to her they are all bff's and they interchange just about everything.

School, Colorado City feeling loss of 13-year-old

COLORADO CITY — As Colorado Middle School students return to class today, the eighth-grade class will be one student short.

Hailey Dunn, who Principal Mark Merrell described as “well loved by all students,” has been missing since Dec. 27.

The 13-year-old girl was last seen by her mother’s boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, who was administered a polygraph test Wednesday by authorities. In addition, the home Hailey’s mother Billie Jean Dunn shares with her boyfriend and children was searched Wednesday afternoon by law enforcement officials for any clues related to the teen’s disappearance.

Merrell called Hailey an energetic cheerleader, volleyball player and track runner who maintains a good rapport with teachers.

“I think there will be a different feeling,” Merrell said of the school atmosphere without Hailey. “We’re a small town. Everybody will miss her.”

Students returning to the middle school will be greeted by individuals who will offer to answer questions and help them make sense of their emotions, Merrell said.

“We want to meet the needs of all our students,” he said. “We will do our best job with these students coming back.”

A specialist from Region 14 will be on campus, along with clergy and counselors from the Colorado Independent School District.

Hailey’s history teacher, Andra Maxwell, said she expects her students will return from the holiday break sad, apprehensive, and with many questions.

Maxwell said her strategy for keeping a positive attitude will be to keep gossip to a minimum and be supportive of all their emotions, no matter how they are feeling.

“None of us know very much at all,” Maxwell said of the rumors circulating about Hailey’s disappearance. “What I’ll tell students is what I do know: that she’s not here, but everybody’s doing what they can to get her back.”

Hailey’s disappearance has stirred the emotions of those who knew her, but strangers also are doing what they can to bring Hailey home.

Karen Berber, CISD family service coordinator, was taking a break from work Wednesday to tie bright orange ribbons around the pillars of the city’s child development center.

“I don’t even know her,” Barber said, “but I know if it was my child I’d want everybody coming out to help me.”

The ribbons, she said, are a constant reminder for everyone on the road to keep praying Hailey returns soon. They were first distributed Sunday at a candlelight vigil held for the missing teen.

According to Colorado City Mayor Carol Sue Dakan, more than 700 orange ribbons are flying around town. She said it is efforts from people like Berber that will make a difference in the case.

“People have been out walking blocks looking for her,” the mayor said of the community of 4,500. “That’s what it’s going to take to find her, the energy of everyone.”

Search Continues For Hailey Dunn: Day Nine Update (with video)

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Now into the ninth day of searching, five different agencies and all sorts of tools are being used to help find 13-year-old Hailey Dunn.

Texas Rangers have been at the missing Colorado City teen's home all day collecting evidence.

Rangers spent a considerable amount of time collecting evidence from a shed in the home's back yard.

Authorities tell us in order to issue an Amber Alert, there must be evidence of an abduction, which could be why they're collecting evidence nine days after the teen disappeared.

Also Wednesday, we spoke to a family member, Hailey's uncle, who says he was given a polygraph test. Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, tells us, he was also questioned by the FBI.

One key player hasn't been seen or heard from since early this afternoon; Billie Jean Dunn, the mother of Hailey left her house with Texas Rangers and hasn't been in contact with family members since, according to her son.

Some local residents even took to the streets themselves this afternoon to look for the missing 13-year-old.

What began as a small town search is now a full blown national story as 13 year old Hailey Dunn remains missing nine days after her sudden disappearance on Monday December 27th.

Today it appeared that authorities were handling the case less like a runaway scenario and more like a criminal investigation of possible foul play.

The center of the investigation appeared to be the Dunn household at the corner of 18th and Chestnut in Colorado City, where the Texas Rangers combed through Hailey’s room and searched the backyard.

With cooperation and assistance from Colorado City Police, the Rangers opened a backyard shed and searched other parts of the property for details.

The Texas Ranger investigators declined interview requests with CBS 7 but Hailey’s mother, Billie Dunn, said the Rangers were looking for any clues or signs that might point out where Hailey went.

Wednesday afternoon Billie told CBS 7 that her boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, was with authorities taking a polygraph test.

City Manager Pete Kampfer said he heard the same thing but that he could not confirm the information.

However, at about 8:00pm, Hailey’s older brother David told our CBS 7 crew that Shawn had refused to take two polygraph tests Wednesday.

David says that Shawn signed the paperwork to take a third but then refused to take it and left the building.

According to David, the Dunn family and police had not seen Shawn since that last polygraph refusal. Hailey’s two unless corroborated that story but police are not releasing information about any polygraph tests at this time.

Hailey’s uncle Dale says he took a polygraph test and passed it and added that Billie may have taken one Wednesday night as well.

As of 8:00pm Wednesday night, Billie Jean Dunn was not at her home and her family believed she was in downtown Colorado City with law enforcement authorities.

Colorado City Mayor Carol Sue Dakan is thankful for awareness in the media and for support from the community, which has raised $25, 000 dollars in money to be offered as a reward.

From what CBS 7 crews gathered from officials, both Billie Jean Dunn and Shawn Adkins have been very cooperative with law enforcement and their investigation.

Billie Dunn told CBS 7 that she knows the media attention can help the efforts to locate her daughter.

The story of Hailey’s disappearance gained national exposure when Headline News discussed the incident on the “Nancy Grace Show”.

Grace said that she does not believe Hailey ran away based on the evidence.

According to City Manager Kampfer, search dogs picked up a few scent spots indicative of Hailey’s presence near the Western Suites hotel off I-20, just a few blocks from Hailey’s home.

Kampfer says the scents were detected after law enforcement brought the dogs to several locations, not by following any sort of “trail” to the hotel.

Colorado City residents are showing their support for the search efforts by flying orange colored ribbons from their car antennas and by posting fliers throughout the city featuring Hailey’s photo and information.

Some neighbors CBS 7 spoke with Wednesday say they are frustrated with what they perceived as a delay between the disappearance and the police investigation.

City Manager Kampfer says he’s asked for the issuance of an Amber Alert several times and has been denied.

He visited with DPS officials Wednesday afternoon. There’s no word yet about the result of that meeting.

Kampfer calls the lack of an Amber Alert “frustrating”.

Nearby communities are also hoping for Hailey’s safe return.

Two Forsan residents could be found cruising Colorado City neighborhoods Wednesday afternoon.

Diana Zubiate says she doesn’t believe Hailey ran away and she wants to help look for her and find out what happened.

“It’s weird”, says Zubiate.

Prayer vigils are scheduled for 5pm Sunday in Forsan and in Sweetwater.

As of Wednesday evening the police department is still working with the Texas Rangers, DPS and other law enforcement agencies to locate Hailey Dunn.

UPDATE: Boyfriend Refused Polygraph Tests in Dunn Case (with video)

Colorado City, TX—The boyfriend of Hailey Dunn's mother has refused to take polygraph tests pertaining to the disappearance of the missing 13-year-old and hasn't been seen since Wednesday morning, according to members of the Dunn family.
Hailey’s older brother, David Dunn, told KTAB's Priscilla Luong that Shawn Adkins had refused to take two polygraph tests Wednesday. According to a report from the CBS affiliate in Midland, Adkins signed the paperwork to take a third but then refused to take it and left the building.

The Texas Rangers have yet to confirm or deny these developments being reported by family members.

On Wednesday, Texas Rangers searched the home occupied by Billie Dunn, Adkins, Hailey, and David.

Thursday morning, David Dunn told KTAB News his mother was sleeping inside the family's home after spending the evening at the law enforcement center.

According to Billie Dunn, Adkins spoke to Hailey at 3 p.m. on December 27.  Hailey said she was headed to her dad's house, located just across a field, then to a friend's house to spend the night.  She never showed up at either location.

Bloodhounds tracked Hailey's trail Friday to a motel located near her home.

According to the Colorado City Record, crews went out on horseback and foot Wednesday searched wooded areas out the outskirts of Colorado City.

The Colorado City Police Department tried to issue an Amber Alert three times, but with no evidence of an abduction, Hailey's case failed to meet the criteria, according to Pete Kampfer, City Manager of Colorado City

"Of course as soon as we get that evidence, and get closer to that, on issuance of an Amber Alert, we're going to be right on top of it," Kampfer said, speaking on behalf of the CCPD.

The reward has grown to $25,000 for tips that lead law enforcement to Hailey Dunn.

Searchers from Texas Department of Criminal Justice Wallace/Ware units were out on horseback and foot today looking for possible clues to the disappearance of Hailey Dunn.

TDCJ officers searched a heavily wooded area on the western edge of town Wednesday morning, January 6, according to TDCJ Warden Matt Kennolly.

The search along the Colorado River continued after lunch on foot along Colorado City's southern edge from the prison to Business I-20 toward town.

The search was made at the request of the Texas Rangers, who are working with local law enforcement agencies.

The multi-agency task force have set up an operations outpost in the Mitchell County courthouse.

School, Colorado City feeling loss of 13-year-old

COLORADO CITY — As Colorado Middle School students return to class today, the eighth-grade class will be one student short.

Hailey Dunn, who Principal Mark Merrell described as “well loved by all students,” has been missing since Dec. 27.

The 13-year-old girl was last seen by her mother’s boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, who was administered a polygraph test Wednesday by authorities. In addition, the home Hailey’s mother Billie Jean Dunn shares with her boyfriend and children was searched Wednesday afternoon by law enforcement officials for any clues related to the teen’s disappearance.

Merrell called Hailey an energetic cheerleader, volleyball player and track runner who maintains a good rapport with teachers.

“I think there will be a different feeling,” Merrell said of the school atmosphere without Hailey. “We’re a small town. Everybody will miss her.”

Students returning to the middle school will be greeted by individuals who will offer to answer questions and help them make sense of their emotions, Merrell said.

“We want to meet the needs of all our students,” he said. “We will do our best job with these students coming back.”

A specialist from Region 14 will be on campus, along with clergy and counselors from the Colorado Independent School District.

Hailey’s history teacher, Andra Maxwell, said she expects her students will return from the holiday break sad, apprehensive, and with many questions.

Maxwell said her strategy for keeping a positive attitude will be to keep gossip to a minimum and be supportive of all their emotions, no matter how they are feeling.

“None of us know very much at all,” Maxwell said of the rumors circulating about Hailey’s disappearance. “What I’ll tell students is what I do know: that she’s not here, but everybody’s doing what they can to get her back.”

Hailey’s disappearance has stirred the emotions of those who knew her, but strangers also are doing what they can to bring Hailey home.

Karen Berber, CISD family service coordinator, was taking a break from work Wednesday to tie bright orange ribbons around the pillars of the city’s child development center.

“I don’t even know her,” Barber said, “but I know if it was my child I’d want everybody coming out to help me.”

The ribbons, she said, are a constant reminder for everyone on the road to keep praying Hailey returns soon. They were first distributed Sunday at a candlelight vigil held for the missing teen.

According to Colorado City Mayor Carol Sue Dakan, more than 700 orange ribbons are flying around town. She said it is efforts from people like Berber that will make a difference in the case.

“People have been out walking blocks looking for her,” the mayor said of the community of 4,500. “That’s what it’s going to take to find her, the energy of everyone.”

Rumors of missing boyfriend unfounded

Rumors that Billie Dunn's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, has disappeared are unfounded according to family friends.

Reports were circulated that Adkins fled during a polygraph test Wednesday.

"He is not missing," said Peggy, a family friend, who asked not to use her last name. "Family friends have said he is in Big Spring at his mother's."

Numerous rumors concerning the disappearance of Hailey Dunn can neither be confirmed nor denied as local authorities have closed the lid on the release of information. Questions about 'an item of interest' found in a shed on the Dunn property, possible suspects, failed polygraph tests, even the investigation at a local motel near I-20 are not being verified by local authorities.

That there were a number of failed polygraphs was, however, confirmed by a family friend, now staying at the Dunn residence on 1804 Chestnut.

Dunn will be featured again on the Nancy Grace show this evening via telephone interview.

Members of a joint law enforcement task force are still pursuing information concerning the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn of Colorado City, Texas as  police officers follow another lead this morning.

 Officers have reviewed hours worth of tape at local motels and convenience stores, seeking a clue to the whereabouts of the missing middle schooler.

Last Friday, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Wallace/Ware units searched the northwest portion of town, near the girl's home with three bloodhounds, according to Warden Matt Kennolly.

A later search was conducted at the Snyder  landfill.

"All searches came up negative," Kennolly said. "We deemed them 'no find,' which means we did not find the missing girl."

Colorado City, TX—   Hailey Dunn's mother says a handful of people connected to her family were told by authorities that they failed polygraph tests that have been administered over the last few days.
Billie Dunn wasn't prepared to name names. However, she told KTAB's Priscilla Luong she and her family's frustration is beginning to mount.

According to Billie Dunn, her boyfriend Shawn Adkins did take a polygraph test. After the test, he did not return to the home he shares with Billie Dunn.

Sources tell KTAB News he is not in custody and authorities are aware of his whereabouts.

Search Continues For Hailey Dunn: Five Agencies Involved (with video)

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Now after nine days of searching, five different agencies and all sorts of tools are being used to help find 13-year-old Hailey Dunn.

Texas Rangers were at the missing Colorado City teen's home Wednesday collecting evidence.

Rangers spent a considerable amount of time collecting evidence from a shed in the home's back yard.

Authorities tell us in order to issue an Amber Alert, there must be evidence of an abduction, which could be why they're collecting evidence nine days after the teen disappeared.

Also Wednesday, we spoke to a family member, Hailey's uncle, who says he was given a polygraph test. Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, tells us, he was also questioned by the FBI.

Billie Jean Dunn, the mother of Hailey, left her house with Texas Rangers early Wednesday afternoon and wasn't in contact with family members the rest of the day, according to her son.

Some local residents even took to the streets themselves Wednesday afternoon to look for the missing 13-year-old.

Missing teen's grandmothers speak out, pray that she's safe

SNYDER, TX (KCBD) - It's been 9 days since family and friends have seen or heard from 13-year-old Hailey Dunn. Wednesday, the FBI joined the investigation.

As investigators searched Dunn's mother Billie Jean's home in Colorado City, her father Clint spoke with authorities for hours in Snyder.

Hailey has 2 grandmothers who also live there; they haven't seen her since Christmas. They say they won't stop hoping and praying until she's found.

Connie Jones, one of Hailey's grandmothers, changed her answering machine. It's a special message for Hailey. We listened to a portion of the message. "I'm staying home as much as I can in hopes that you call me. I love you my baby."

Jones worries that someone has her granddaughter. "I think someone's took her because Hailey, she's a home person."

In that home in Colorado City, Hailey lives with Billie Jean and her mother's boyfriend Shawn Adkins. Adkins was the last person to see Hailey. On Wednesday Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer said Adkins took a lie detector test.

Jones said Hailey didn't care much for Adkins. "She don't like Shawn being there; but she wants her mom and dad to go back together," she said.

Hailey's mother and father separated 3 years ago; Jones says the divorce was hard on Hailey.

Connie Ostrander is Hailey's other grandmother in Snyder. "I just don't understand this because she doesn't do this. She's not the type to run away," she said.

Ostrander has this message for Hailey: "Please just come home. We miss you so much. We love you; we need you here with us. If you get this, please Hailey, come home."

Authorities have yet to determine if Hailey was abducted or if she ran away. On Wednesday they were searching a shed behind her mother's house; an area neighbors say she spent a lot of time. "Every day, a lot, she would always be back there on the phone," a neighbor told us.

In both grandmothers' homes, pictures of Hailey are everywhere. They serve as a constant reminder for them to pray and hope for the best. "Please if you know anything please contact the police, 911, anything," Ostrander said.

"I want her home, she's been gone too long, and they say after so long she might not come home," said Jones

Kampfer said authorities made a lot of progress from Tuesday. While they have not named any persons of interest, he says they've narrowed down to a focus group of individuals that may know more information.

Just curious here.  How long does it usually take for a cell phone company to release call information to LE?  They would have this info by now, right?  I remember there was someone who mentioned seeing Hailey on her Mom's cell phone in the yard around lunchtime.  I wonder who the last person she spoke to on that phone was.

Does anyone else find it odd that a 13 yo girl spends her time in the yard by the shed on the phone ? Most teenage girls would be in their bedrooms talking on the phone. I'm wondering if there were privacy issues in the house or if she felt uncomfortable in the house while mom was at work.

As of Thursday at noon, the amount of reward money offered for Hailey's safe return which stood at $10,000, has been increased to $15,000.

A later search was conducted at the Snyder  landfill.

An aerial search of the north eastern part of town has been discussed.

Rpt: Boyfriend of missing cheerleader's mom refuses poly

Despite Hailey Dunn’s mother’s claim Tuesday night that her boyfriend Shane Adkins would take a polygraph test yesterday and reports that he was taken to the law enforcement center do it, family members now reportedly say that he refused. Hailey’s brother David Dunn told CNN affiliate KTAB that Adkins had refused to take two polygraphs. Another local report indicates Adkins signed paperwork for a third polygraph request but then refused and left the building. According to what David Dunn told KTAB, his family has not seen Adkins since then. Two of Hailey’s uncles also told affiliate CBS7 that Adkins has refused to take a polygraph three times. Police have not confirmed or denied any of those reports. David Dunn also told KTAB that his mother was at the law enforcement center with investigators last night.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice search guards and dogs did a "grid search" overnight, even scouring the riverbeds.

Colorado City officials confirm Texas Rangers have heard that Hailey’s mother's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, has skipped town. It has not been confirmed by officials that he has skipped polygraph testing.

Adkins has not been named a suspect and authorities have not been able to corroborate this account.

City officials confirm they are sending the DPS helicopter to continue searching the area.

Yesterday, authorities were focusing their search on the home of Hailey Dunn and a shed just behind it.

Several officials were seen carrying out bags of what appear to be evidence.

Meanwhile, city officials say foul play is now a possibility.

Hopefully LE has him under surveillance.

Hailey Dunn: Mother's boyfriend may have left town

No.  Not if that 13 year old is afforded a cell phone and the opportunity to speak in private.  Billie Dunn admitted to Nancy Grace that unknown to her Hailey had a boyfriend.

Hailey Dunn Missing: 13-Year-Old Texas Girl Vanished A Week Ago


COLORADO CITY, Texas (CBS/KOSA) What began as a small-town search has become a statewide investigation as central Texas girl Hailey Dunn remains missing more than a week after her sudden disappearance.

The 13-year-old cheerleader from the community about 75 miles west of Abilene was last seen on Dec. 27, after telling her mother's boyfriend she was spending the night at a friend's house. However, after questioning, police learned that the friend had no idea Hailey was coming over.

The Texas Rangers and Colorado City police have searched Hailey's home and surrounding areas. According to CBS affiliate KOSA, rangers were seen carrying garbage bags from her house into their squad cars.

Authorities are also searching the phone records of Hailey's mother and her mother's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins.  KOSA reports Adkin has been given a polygraph exam. The results have not been disclosed.


Several residents are upset and are critical of the time lapse between when Hailey went missing and the investigation. Reports say the Colorado City manager has tried 3 times to have an amber alert issued, but to no avail.

Police say they tried to issue an Amber Alert but were unable to do so because there is "not enough information" on Hailey's disappearance, according to Fox News.

"The minimum standard for creating an Amber Alert is knowledge of a suspect, a description of a vehicle involved in an abduction and/or a route and direction of travel," Colorado City Police Chief John Bivens said in a statement, Fox reported.


Family members now fear the worst and a $25,000 reward is being offered for the girl's safe return.


Hailey Dunn is a white female and described as 5'1, 120 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair with blondish streaks.

Texas Rangers are now hearing that the boyfriend of missing 13 year old Hailey Dunn's mother is now missing himself.

The Rangers learned this from Hailey's 16 year old brother, David.

Major Randy Prince of the Texas Rangers is now telling city hall that the investigation is ongoing and that they have some very "hot" leads they are following. Prince tells city hall that "the focus has intensified".

In a visit to the Dunn household this morning a family friend answered the door and told our CBS 7 crew that the family is tired and does not wish to speak with the media.

However, she said that Billie Dunn, Hailey's mother, will be doing a live interview on the Nancy Grace show once again this evening.

According to Colorado City Manager, Pete Kampfer, a DPS helicopter will be flying above the city this afternoon conducting a comprehensive aerial search.

Kampfer reports a ground search by TDCJ prison guards with dogs has concluded.

Kampfer declined to release the results of the search but did say that the guards conducted a "grid" search combing each city block and the riverbed.

The City Manager says he has also heard that Hailey's brother said Shawn Adkins "bolted" Wednesday night.

On a positive note, the Lamar billboard company is contributing to the search efforts by putting up a message regarding Hailey's disappearance on their digital billboards all along Interstate 20.

UPDATE: Search for Missing Girl Spreads to Internet

COLORADO CITY - The search for 13-year-old Hailey Dunn has spilled over onto the Internet. The website findhaileydunn.com has been filled with articles and updates about the little girl.

It also includes an interview Hailey's mother did with Nancy Grace on CNN Headline News and reports that the reward for information about Hailey has been raised to $25,000.

The 13-year-old cheerleader was last seen on December 27 in Colorado City and since that time residents in Mitchell, Howard and Scurry Counties have rallied to try and find her.

Colorado City officials tell NewsWest9 that the FBI has now joined the investigation which already includes several agencies including the Texas Rangers.

Police originally believed her to be a runaway, but after more than a week they're now calling her a missing person.

So far, the state has not issued an Amber Alert for the girl, which has caused many in the Colorado City area to question why. Here are the requirements for an Amber Alert:

•A child must be under 17 years of age and there needs to be proof they were taken unwillingly.
•There also needs to be proof the child is in immediate danger.

The search continued today for Hailey Dunn, the Colorado City middle school student who has been missing for 10 days.

Pete Kampfer, city manager and spokesman for Colorado City Police Department, said this morning that Texas Rangers discontinued their foot search for the 13-year-old girl along the Colorado River on Wednesday and that they would begin a helicopter search this afternoon.

Hailey Dunn was last seen by her mother’s boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, who said she told him she was going to a friend's house. The friend said that she wasn't aware of any such plans.

"They've intensified the search since yesterday. They've confirmed some leads and are going with them today," Kampfer said.

At 8:30 a.m. today, Billie Jean Dunn -- Hailey's mother -- was inside her home with Hailey's 16-year-old brother David and Billie Jean Dunn's brother Dale.

David confirmed at that time that Shawn Adkins had not completed the polygraph test that he had originally agreed to take on Wednesday.

Kampfer said he couldn't confirm any information regarding polygraph tests that may have been administered.

"Sometimes just the idea of getting a polygraph adds to the situation," he said, referring to the general process of the polygraph test. "What you're looking for is a confession."

Billie Jean Dunn wasn't available for comment and said she would not speak to the media until after her phone call with TV personality Nancy Grace this evening. Grace's show appears on CNN.

Kampfer confirmed evidence was taken from Billie Jean's home Wednesday that may have led to leads being pursued today.

Lamar Advertising has placed Hailey Dunn's photo and information on several billboards along Interstate 20 between Abilene and Odessa.

Lamar Advertising Donates Billboards to Help Find Missing Girl

MIDLAND - Lamar Advertising, which leases billboards all over Interstate 20, is joining the effort to find missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn.

Lamar Advertising tells NewsWest9 that they have donated billboard space up and down Interstate 20 between Abilene and Odessa.

Since an Amber Alert has not been issued, Lamar has created its own billboard design. The message will be going out on the digital billboard on Highway 191 between Midland and Odessa Thursday afternoon. They have also ordered traditional vinyl billboards to put up as well.

The Hailey Dunn case returns to Nancy Grace on HLN Thursday night, the first national broadcast to give attention to the Colorado City teen's disappearance.

KTAB is told the first 45 minutes of the show, which airs from 7 to 8 p.m., will cover the latest developments in Dunn's disappearance.

On Monday and Tuesday's shows, Grace interviewed Dunn's mother, father, legal and child safety experts, as well as members of the local media, including KTAB's Priscilla Luong.

Fox News aired a two-minute story (embedded below) on Thursday about Hailey's disappearance, but were fairly loose with the facts.

Dunn's mother has had a very forgiving attitude toward the national media, grateful that her daughter's name and picture are being seen by a wide audience.

yes I do..and I think that you are correct in thinking that Mom's boyfriend made her uncomfortable and that is perhaps why she spent so much time outside..so she did not have to be around him..maybe he was pissy towards her or perhaps he had made advances towards her..time will tell..
I had a few crappy step dads and I stayed as far away from them as I could...mostly in my room or outside, weather permitting...

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice search guards and dogs did a "grid search" overnight, even scouring the riverbeds.

Colorado City officials confirm Texas Rangers have heard that Hailey’s mother's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, has skipped town. It has not been confirmed by officials that he has skipped polygraph testing.

Adkins has not been named a suspect and authorities have not been able to corroborate this account.

City officials confirm they are sending the DPS helicopter to continue searching the area.

Yesterday, authorities were focusing their search on the home of Hailey Dunn and a shed just behind it.

Several officials were seen carrying out bags of what appear to be evidence.

Missing teen's grandmothers speak out, pray that she's safe

Connie Jones, one of Hailey's grandmothers, changed her answering machine. It's a special message for Hailey. We listened to a portion of the message. "I'm staying home as much as I can in hopes that you call me. I love you my baby."

Jones worries that someone has her granddaughter. "I think someone's took her because Hailey, she's a home person."

In that home in Colorado City, Hailey lives with Billie Jean and her mother's boyfriend Shawn Adkins. Adkins was the last person to see Hailey. On Wednesday Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer said Adkins took a lie detector test.

Jones said Hailey didn't care much for Adkins. "She don't like Shawn being there; but she wants her mom and dad to go back together," she said.

Hailey's mother and father separated 3 years ago; Jones says the divorce was hard on Hailey.

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – The search for Hailey Dunn, 13, in Colorado City has been taken to the air.  A DPS helicopter could be seen over the town for much of Thursday.

At the same time family members have been asked to withhold comment from the media.  The family said Thursday that Hailey's mom, Billie Jean Dunn, would make an exception for CNN's Nancy Grace show.

Meanwhile the reward for information leading to Hailey's safe return now stands at $15,000. 

According to KWES-9, the NBC affiliate for Midland/Odessa, the Lamar Advertising company has donated billboard space up and down Interstate 20 between Abilene and Odessa.  The signs are meant to bring public awareness to Hailey's case and the electronic billboards were up Thursday.  Traditional vinyl billboards will still being made Thursday.

When a new man (sometimes a women but usually a man) is brought into a home the death and danger rate for the children go way up. A child in a home with a non related male is SEVEN times more likely to be abused. The rate of sexual abuse is much higher. The rate of murder is higher. Yet young women seem to let man after man in the house to live without concerns for the children. As a disclaimer, I am a step parent. But I chose well. And we are married. The larger problem is when a single mom lets guys in.  This is very dangerous. Women need to know the risk before they let random guys in the house.

The investigation into the disappearance of Hailey Dunn is beginning to intensify and focus as more evidence and leads are generated, according to Colorado City city manager Pete Kampfer on Thursday afternoon.

“This afternoon, the Department of Public Safety will conduct a helicopter search of Colorado City,” Kampfer said.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice Wallace and Ware Unit personnel have already spent two days conducting a grid search of the town on horseback, with dogs and on foot. The search included all rivers and creeks, Kampfer said.

“We are trying to stay positive and put forth community effort,” he said. At a press conference held at 4:30 on Thursday afternoon, Kampfer said, "My continuing hope and prayers are that they find and return Hailey to Colorado City" in good condition. He also stated that the search for Dunn has been and is "a community effort at the grassroots level."

Today the task force command post moved from the county courthouse to the CC Thompson Building on 2nd Street. Six different agencies are currently involved in the search: D.S., Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado City Police Department, District Attorney’s office, Texas Rangers and the FBI.

Contrary to other reports, the Texas Rangers were brought in on the day after Hailey disappeared, according to Kampfer.

“Other local agencies in Snyder, Scurry and Nolan Counties are also involved in the search,” he said.
Kampfer does not know the results of the TDCJ searches, nor does he know the results of the search warrant served at Hailey’s Chestnut Street residence.

Lamar sign and billboard company will donate digital and print signs along I-20 in both east and west directions.

The official reward being offered for Hailey’s safe return is $15,000.  “That’s cash in hand with more contributions coming in up to $25,000,” Kampfer said.

“We will be taking on additional reserve or part-time officers to beef up the current law enforcement effort,” Kampfer said, who is also working with national, regional and local media.

“There has been a lot of misinformation. I’m asked lots of questions. Lots of time I don’t know the answer,” he said.

“What I’m trying to do is what everyone would like to have, trying to give out as much information as I can get out of the task force to fill in the blanks,” Kampfer said.

Sensationalized issues over Amber Alert and blame on the city upset Kampfer.  “We’ve done everything we can to issue an Amber Alert. There’s no failure on our behalf.”  The city’s request for issuing an Amber Alert was repeatedly turned down by the state because the prerequisites of a description of a captor or captor’s vehicle was not met.

Kampfer also clarified the reports about dogs tracking Hailey to the Western Suites motel.

“The dogs did not trail Hailey’s scent to the motels,” He said. “They took the dogs to different places trying to pick up the scent.  Motels are good places to start. The dogs did get a hit.”

Kampfer went on to explain that  investigators cannot determine when a trail has been made.
Hailey could have been there a couple of days before and the dogs would still have picked up her scent or someone else wearing an article of Hailey’s clothing would have the same results.

“Bloodhounds are scent specific,” Warden Matt Kennolly said. “The only thing we need is a scent article for the person we’re looking for. The dog will track only that scent.”

“Our dogs can run 48-72 hours, but I have seen scent dogs up to 7-8 days. There are so many environmental factors that come into play,” Kennelly said.

No possible lead has been overlooked as investigators have checked almost every surveillance camera in town, according to Kampfer. “It’s amazing what they have checked.  They’ve done a good job.”

Since the first day the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn has been treated as a missing person.

“There’s no indication one way or the other that she’s still not in Colorado City or Mitchell County,” Kampfer said.

Update: Helicopters, Billboards Drawn Into Search For Hailey Dunn

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Search helicopters and billboards are now being used by law enforcement officials and family in the search for missing Colorado City teenager Hailey Dunn.

Thursday also marked the first day back at school since the Christmas holidays for Hailey's eighth-grade classmates at Colorado Middle School. With orange ribbons tied around nearly every tree on campus, the school day took place without 13-year-old Hailey.

Counselors were on hand at the school Thursday to help students deal with the absence and disturbing news concerning Hailey.

Search authorities also said the reward for returning Hailey officially stood at $15,000. Officials said they had erroneously reported the reward as being $25,000, apparently because some of the money was pledged but yet not donated. Nevertheless, new billboards put up Thursday announced the reward as $25,000.

Authorities in Colorado City are continuing their efforts at searching and getting the word out.

City Manager Pete Kampfer said helicopters have been provided by the Department of Public Safety to help search for Hailey. Search officials used horses and dogs – and even state prison inmates – to search creek beds in Colorado City and the perimeter of the city.

Kampfer said the helicopters are just more tools being added to the search.

"They can be used for not only search but for surveillance," Kampfer said.

The helicopters are also being used to fly in special agents. The FBI has been involved in the case since Monday, and FBI agents interviewed Billie Dunn, Hailey's mother, on Thursday. After these interviews were completed, Billie Dunn refused to comment to reporters gathered there.
Kampfer said the billboards have been donated by Lamar Advertising to inform the public of Hailey's disappearance. Hailey's disappearance will be displayed on billboards from Abilene, 70 miles east of Colorado City, to the Midland-Odessa area, some 80-plus miles to the west.

Kampfer, a former FBI agent himself, said he could not confirm any rumors swirling about who has or has not passed polygraph tests related to the disappearance. Different family members have made various unconfirmed and conflicting assertions about polygraph tests taken and their results.

Hailey was last seen on Dec. 27 when she reportedly told Shawn Adkins, boyfriend of Hailey's mother Billie Dunn, that she was spending the night with a friend.

However, she never made it to the friend’s house, and the friend has said she didn’t know Hailey was coming – that they hadn’t made plans for her to spend the night.

No statewide Amber Alert has been issued because the case has not met the criteria for issuing such an alert.

State officials have three times refused to issue the Amber Alert, Colorado City officials say, because there is no physical evidence to show that Hailey has been abducted or that she is facing physical harm.

New Hailey Dunn Details Revealed on "Nancy Grace"

An update on the Hailey Dunn disappearance: According to Billie Dunn, she was questioned for 10-12 hours on Wednesday night after admittedly failing a polygraph test. Dunn explained the details of the polygraph testing on Thursday night's "Nancy Grace" broadcast.

Dunn also said that her boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, also failed his polygraph test. Since then, Adkins has left Colorado City and is now staying with his grandmother in West Texas. Dunn said she asked Adkins not to come back.

KTAB's Priscilla Luong has confirmed that both Dunn and Adkins failed their polygraphs.

Dunn said investigators asked her if she had caused Hailey's disappearance, and if she was afraid of answering their questions.

Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, has not taken a polygraph yet, and is not scheduled to take one at this time. He says he has volunteered to take a test.

According to the broadcast, the Texas Rangers did a thorough search of Billie Dunn's home on Wednesday night, 9 days after Hailey disappeared.

UPDATE: "Substantial Leads" in Dunn Disappearance (With video)

Authorities in Colorado City say they have "substantial leads" in the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn.
"Our leads are primarily around corroboration and information from the different people that they've interviewed and talked to," said City Manager Pete Kampfer during in interview with Lane Stone. "We're corroborating all the different information and data that they've provided."

Kampfer says they're intensifying their investigation and narrowing leads.

At 5 p.m., KTAB cameras were rolling as troopers walked in and out of the Dunn home.

Kamfer also revealed for the first time the city is aggressively tracking sex offenders to make sure they know where they're located at all times. "We're also following up on information that they've provided us to make sure they are where they say there are," said Kampfer.

Kampfer also dispelled many of the rumors circulating -- including that Dunn's body was found by DPS helicopters.

"Nothing has been found of that nature," added Kampfer. "We're still very hopeful." A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter has been flying over Colorado City this late afternoon  as crews continue their search on foot.

The chopper came down momentarily, landing in a field before going back up to search from the air.


Colorado City's city manager tells KTAB's Priscilla Luong a ground search conducted by Texas Department of Criminal Justice guards on Wednesday has ended. The crews combed the area on horseback and foot.

According to the Colorado City Record, the search took place along the Colorado River along Colorado City's southern edge from the prison to Business I-20 toward town.

The search was made at the request of the Texas Rangers, who are working with local law enforcement agencies.

According to our research of the Texas and other state lists there were 10 registered sex offenders living in Colorado City in April 2010.

The ratio of number of residents in Colorado City to the number of sex offenders is 388 to 1.

I also agree from what we know that LE has been so irresponsible in not erring on the side of caution from the moment she was reported missing. Why on earth would LE not run parallel investigations just to be on the safe side, and oh yeah IMO they need another spokesperson instead of the city manager and should have called in the Big guns ASAP if they weren't used to dealing with this type of a crime.

I was very impressed with Billie Dunn's response to questions on the Nancy Grace Show tonight.  She was very forthright regarding even the hard issues.  I am look forward to reading the posted transcript.  FYI ... Nancy Grace (HLN) repeats at 7:00/10:00 PM PT.

Recap

1.  Shawn refused two polygraph requests prior to agreeing to a third which he failed.

2.  After being informed that Shawn failed his polygraph ... an emotional Billie took one and failed.

3.  Billie asked Shawn to move out because of the failed polygraph and ... he went to his grandmother's home.

4.  Shawn informed Billie that Hailey was spending the night at a friend's home.  She wishes she had contacted daughter or friend's mother that evening.

5.  Billie met Shawn on Myspace.  They met in person one month later but did not move in together for 2 1/2 years.

What concerned me was that Hailey did appear to have a lot of freedom for a 13 year old ... at least in my world.  Rather than asking permission ... Hailey would leave notes informing Billie she was staying over at a friend's home.  On that fateful night ... Billie was not concerned.  Shawn had informed her that Hailey had said she was having a sleep over at Mary Beth's home.

Considering Shawn claims that Hailey stated she was spending the night at Marybeth's home and ... Marybeth claims there were no overnight plans.  It would appear that either Shawn or Hailey was being deceptive.

Although Hailey had unknown to her mother had a boyfriend ... I somehow do not believe she would be deceptive about the sleepover issue.  She had no way of knowing her mother would not attempt to contact or or Marybeth's mother.

Did that make sense?

Me either.  Under the circumstances, that makes sense to me.  I don't believe she is involved with Hailey's disappearance at all.

It doesn't bother me either. But she seems to think because the boyfriend didn't pass his, makes her think he might have something to do with Hailey being missing. So I wonder if there is some other things that make her think that. Things she is just not saying.

I hope they find her alive too. There have been a few here lately on the thread that have been found.

It does make sense, but it seems like from what I've heard/read so far, Hailey was not used to being checked up on by anyone ... at least not immediately.  I hounded the daylights out of my children wherever they went, but not all parents feel it's necessary to do that even in today's world. 

But like you, I was impressed with Billie Dunn's appearance on NG tonight, she seemed very straight on with her answers.

Yes.  Billie stated on Nancy Grace that her connection with Shawn began shortly after her separation from her husband.

This 64 year old granny who just celebrated her 45th wedding anniversary will never embraced the concept of the "living together" lifestyle.  Nevertheless ... I do give Billie credit that there was a 2 1/2 year relationship prior to Shawn moving in.  Maybe in that period of time she did not observe any red flags.

The investigation into the disappearance of Hailey Dunn is beginning to intensify and focus as more evidence and leads are generated, according to Colorado City city manager Pete Kampfer on Thursday afternoon.

“This afternoon, the Department of Public Safety will conduct a helicopter search of Colorado City,” Kampfer said.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice Wallace and Ware Unit personnel have already spent two days conducting a grid search of the town on horseback, with dogs and on foot. The search included all rivers and creeks, Kampfer said.

“We are trying to stay positive and put forth community effort,” he said. At a press conference held at 4:30 on Thursday afternoon, Kampfer said, "My continuing hope and prayers are that they find and return Hailey to Colorado City" in good condition. He also stated that the search for Dunn has been and is "a community effort at the grassroots level."

Today the task force command post moved from the county courthouse to the CC Thompson Building on 2nd Street. Six different agencies are currently involved in the search: D.S., Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado City Police Department, District Attorney’s office, Texas Rangers and the FBI.

Contrary to other reports, the Texas Rangers were brought in on the day after Hailey disappeared, according to Kampfer.

“Other local agencies in Snyder, Scurry and Nolan Counties are also involved in the search,” he said.
Kampfer does not know the results of the TDCJ searches, nor does he know the results of the search warrant served at Hailey’s Chestnut Street residence.

Lamar sign and billboard company will donate digital and print signs along I-20 in both east and west directions.

The official reward being offered for Hailey’s safe return is $15,000.  “That’s cash in hand with more contributions coming in up to $25,000,” Kampfer said.

“We will be taking on additional reserve or part-time officers to beef up the current law enforcement effort,” Kampfer said, who is also working with national, regional and local media.

“There has been a lot of misinformation. I’m asked lots of questions. Lots of time I don’t know the answer,” he said.

“What I’m trying to do is what everyone would like to have, trying to give out as much information as I can get out of the task force to fill in the blanks,” Kampfer said.

Sensationalized issues over Amber Alert and blame on the city upset Kampfer.  “We’ve done everything we can to issue an Amber Alert. There’s no failure on our behalf.”  The city’s request for issuing an Amber Alert was repeatedly turned down by the state because the prerequisites of a description of a captor or captor’s vehicle was not met.

Kampfer also clarified the reports about dogs tracking Hailey to the Western Suites motel.

“The dogs did not trail Hailey’s scent to the motels,” He said. “They took the dogs to different places trying to pick up the scent.  Motels are good places to start. The dogs did get a hit.”

Kampfer went on to explain that  investigators cannot determine when a trail has been made.
Hailey could have been there a couple of days before and the dogs would still have picked up her scent or someone else wearing an article of Hailey’s clothing would have the same results.

“Bloodhounds are scent specific,” Warden Matt Kennolly said. “The only thing we need is a scent article for the person we’re looking for. The dog will track only that scent.”

“Our dogs can run 48-72 hours, but I have seen scent dogs up to 7-8 days. There are so many environmental factors that come into play,” Kennelly said.

No possible lead has been overlooked as investigators have checked almost every surveillance camera in town, according to Kampfer. “It’s amazing what they have checked.  They’ve done a good job.”

Since the first day the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn has been treated as a missing person.

“There’s no indication one way or the other that she’s still not in Colorado City or Mitchell County,” Kampfer said.

Moms nurse license was revoked in 2008. Wonder why? Mom seems sweet but something is a little off. Can't put my finger on it.

If she didn't like the live-in boyfriend, maybe Hailey had a reason to run away. But I don't think she did. The one thing that has bothered me is how close she was to the interstate. Some truck drivers would be more than willing to pick up a young girl hitch hiking out on the road, and no telling where she might be.

I just got to looking. There is a truck stop in Colorado City. A small one. I wonder how far it is from Hailey's house. It is at i-20 and US 80.

I read somewhere that there is a new hospital I think in Colorado city near 1-20. Let me see if I can find it.

If you go to the site October gave you can read the charges (PDF) She apparently worked for 1 yr without renewing her license as an LVN and didn't show for her hearing or pay the costs of $ 1,200.00 so her license was revoked.

"They're really good friends, awesome," Hailey's Aunt, Melinda Salazar, said.

To a local radio station's web site everyone is asking "Where is Hailey Dunn?"

National headliner Nancy Grace asked thousands of her viewers to look out for the teen first on television and now thousands more can view her story on CNN's Web site.

On Facebook, people are reaching out to Hailey's family.

"I've got 150 to 200 people that have added me in the last few week," Salazar said. "I'm posting everything I can find on Facebook, they're posting it. We're calling, sending text messages. Everything we can think of."

More than 7,000 people are following the Find Hailey Dunn Facebook page, and NewsWest9.com has seen more than 5,000 hits on the first story we posted on our website.

So since she went missing over a week ago, thousands, maybe millions have seen her story and her family hopes the word will keep spreading.

"We're not stopping until she's home," Salazar said. "We're not stopping we want her home."

COLORADO CITY — Law enforcement officials continued Thursday to chase leads from evidence collected Wednesday from missing Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn’s home.

A helicopter search for the 13-year-old middle school student who has been missing for 10 days started about noon Thursday.

About 4 p.m., the helicopter landed in a field of brush near 21st Street, west of the Dunn home. Authorities spent time searching the wooded area south of Interstate 20.
Earlier Thursday, Pete Kampfer, city manager and spokesman for the Colorado City Police Department, said the air search came after authorities discontinued a foot search for Dunn along the Colorado River on Wednesday.

Dunn apparently was last seen by her mother’s boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, who said she told him she was going to a friend’s house. The friend said she wasn’t aware of any such plans.

Billie Jean Dunn, Hailey’s mother, told TV personality Nancy Grace on Thursday night that she and her boyfriend had taken polygraph tests Wednesday. She said she was told before taking her test that Adkins had failed his test. She said she also failed her test.

Later, she asked Adkins to move out and said she has not spoken with him since. He was not at the Dunn home Thursday morning.

Kampfer said the investigation was progressing.

“They’ve intensified the search since yesterday. They’ve confirmed some leads and are going with them today,” he said of investigators.

Kampfer confirmed that evidence was taken from Billie Jean Dunn’s home Wednesday that may have led to leads being pursued Thursday. Although he wouldn’t say what items had been taken, he said the FBI — in similar cases — typically obtains soil samples and searches for pornography, drug paraphernalia, bleach, gloves and shovels.

Billie Jean Dunn was presented with a list of the items that were taken from the home and an outdoor storage shed, Kampfer said.

At 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Billie Jean Dunn was inside her home with her brother Dale and Hailey’s 16-year-old brother, David.

On Grace’s show on HLN Thursday, Billie Jean Dunn said Colorado City police initially searched her home the day after Hailey was reported missing. Texas Rangers searched the home again Wednesday.

Also on the program, the accuracy of the polygraphs was brought into question after Billie Jean Dunn confirmed that she and Adkins were on medication that may have skewed the results.

Grace expressed concern that Billie Jean Dunns’ knowledge of Adkins’ failure before her test interfered with accuracy.

Kampfer said he couldn’t confirm information regarding polygraph tests.

“Sometimes just the idea of getting a polygraph adds to the situation,” he said, referring to the general process of the polygraph test. “What you’re looking for is a confession.”

Billie Jean said on the program that she met Adkins on MySpace not long after she had separated from her husband, Clint Dunn. When Adkins moved in, she said, Hailey did not care for him. However, she said her daughter became more comfortable around Adkins.

David Dunn, Haley’s brother, said Thursday he did not know Adkins well.

Clint Dunn said running away would be out of character for his daughter.

“She’s not a runaway, she’s never said those words in her life. She’s 13. She’s a little kid,” he said. “She’s not like a lot of 13-year-olds wearing makeup and that stuff. She acts like a little kid.”

Clint said Hailey was happy at home and never had any reason to want to leave.

According to Adkins, Hailey had plans to spend the night at Mary Beth Garcia’s home the night before she was reported missing by Billie Jean Dunn.

Cecilia Garcia, Mary Beth’s mother, said Thursday that Mary Beth considers Hailey to be her best friend, but Hailey never had been to the Garcia home to spend the night. Mary Beth had spent the night at Hailey Dunn’s home once. :-?

Cecilia Garcia said the first time she saw Billie Jean Dunn was on television, when she appeared earlier on Grace’s program to discuss her daughter’s disappearance.

Meanwhile, Lamar Advertising placed Hailey Dunn’s photo and information on several billboards along Interstate 20 between Abilene and Odessa.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s website, Hailey Darlene Dunn was last seen wearing navy sweatpants, a short-sleeve, light-colored T-shirt, flip-flops and red hoop earrings. Her left upper ear is pierced.

Kampfer said a collection of agents from the FBI, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Rangers have joined local law enforcement officials to investigate Dunn’s disappearance.

Kampfer said the city has received an average of 30 phone calls per day on the tip line since the teen’s disappearance. He could not confirm if any of the tips were used by law enforcement to uncover information in the case.

DPS Senior Trooper Sparky Dean said helicopters will remain on call in Lubbock and Midland to assist with the investigation.

Dean said law enforcement’s plan for Thursday evening was simply to continue to work as diligently as officials have for the past 10 days.

“We’ve got 30 officers beating the streets and following leads,” he said.

In addition, he said, officials in Austin and Dallas are following leads online.

According to the missing and exploited children website, Hailey is one of 111 children who have been reported missing in Texas during the past 10 years.

Robert Lowery, executive director of missing children’s division for the organization, said the nonprofit has aided the search by distributing posters with Hailey’s photo and information to a 75-mile radius of Colorado City.

The community remains hopeful that organizations such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will help draw attention to the case and lead to Hailey Dunn being found alive.

Crystal White waits tables at the Hamburger Shoppe. The mother of five said she wanted to raise her kids in Colorado City because she was confident it was a safe place.

“It’s just hard to see it happen in the community you were raised in,” she said. “What must these kids be feeling, thinking. You just don’t want them to be scared, but they are.”

White said the anxiety only grows as time passes without Hailey being found.

“My daughter was scared to walk to school this morning, and I mean we only live down the street,” she said. “I’ve never watched her walk to school, but I did this morning.”

It is strange to have 2 licenses with the same name. Billie is 33 according to her My Space. The valid license has been in place for 33 years. There must be 2 Billie Dunns that work as LVNs? Perhaps it is this name overlap that allows her to work without a valid license. Or maybe she is working as a nursing assistant instead of an LVN. I have no idea.

I am guessing that Billie did not renew her license and when she realized it, she did not have the $1200 to get it reinstated? that would be a shame if that was the case cause she could make a pretty good living on a nurse's wage..I would venture to guess that she is working as a CNA or something like that...
She is sweet and I feel brutally honest with her answers...She really is not trying to make excuses for herself as far as not calling to check on Hailey's whereabouts the night she went missing..She said that she wished that she had now...I really feel sorry for her. a lot of guilt and regrets on her part I would think. the pain of her child missing must be immense..I feel that this mother is very child like in her own way.

Police to focus on woods, river in search for missing teen

New York (CNN) -- Investigators and rescue teams will continue their search Friday for a missing 13-year-old Texas girl, focusing near a densely-wooded area and along the Colorado River.

Meanwhile, Hailey Dunn's mother, Billie Dunn, told HLN's Nancy Grace that she and her live-in boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, both failed polygraph exams.

Adkins was the last person to see the eighth-grade cheerleader on December 27 at Dunn's home in Colorado City, according to local reports.

Colorado City -- a rural central Texas town -- is about 70 miles west of Abilene, Texas.

Hailey reportedly told Adkins she was going to visit her father and then a friend. Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, says she often came to his home, but did not on that day.

Dunn said she took the polygraph test after she was informed that Adkins had failed.

Woodrow Tripp, a polygraph expert, told Nancy Grace that troubles him.

''That absolutely would cause major problems emotionally as she's administered one. You want to try to minimize that as much as possible.''

Dunn did not say who administered the exam during which she says she was asked if she knew anything about or caused Hailey's disappearance and whether she feared any questions.

The night Hailey vanished, Dunn says she thought her daughter was sleeping over at a friend's house.

Asked why she did not confirm Hailey's location before going to bed that night, Dunn said, ''I just don't have an answer for that. I wish I would have called to tell her goodnight.''

Dunn says police questioned her for more than 10 hours on Wednesday.

She met Adkins on the MySpace social networking site more than two years ago and he moved in with her several months ago.

Initially, police considered Hailey a runaway but the case is now a missing person. However, a Texas Amber Alert has not been issued, reportedly because no one saw Hailey being abducted.

Hailey is 5'1, 120 pounds, has hazel eyes, and brown hair with blond streaks.

When she disappeared, she was wearing navy blue sweat pants, a light-colored short sleeve T-shirt, and pink and white tennis shoes.

Meaning of Failed Polygraphs in Hailey Dunn Case (with video)

They asked if I knew anything about the disappearance of Hailey," said Billie Dunn, the mother of the missing Colorado City teen, on her second appearance on "Nancy Grace."

There she was asked about the polygraph test that she and boyfriend, Shawn Adkins took.

"He took his, I went in, they told me he failed it, I lost it," said Hailey.

She went on to say, "They took me to the courthouse, I took the polygraph test, I failed it."

So what does this mean when both people closely connected to Hailey fail the test?

"If there is a failure or a deception indicated, generally speaking it would indicate the person quite possibly could have some knowledge or involvement in the disappearance of the person," explained Mike Gougler, a polygraph expert

Gougler is not directly involved with this search, and could not speak about the case specifically, but in his experience he says these type of tests can really aid in the investigation.

"When they start running polygraphs early on, they're trying to eliminate people so they can focus their efforts on the most important factor, and that's the safe recovery of the individual that has disappeared."

Gougler says everyone who takes a polygraph is typically told afterwards if they passed or failed, so that's not unusual, but it's unknown if Billie Dunn's claim to know the results of her boyfriend's test will have any impact on this investigation.

Hailey Dunn's Mom Says She, Boyfriend Failed Polygraphs  (with video)

The disappearance of Colorado City 13-year-old Hailey Dunn once again took center stage on HLN's "Nancy Grace" show Thursday evening.
Among the guests were Billie and Clint Dunn, separated parents of Hailey Dunn, and KTAB's Priscilla Luong.

According to Billie Dunn, she was questioned for 10-12 hours on Wednesday night after admittedly failing a polygraph test. Dunn explained the details of the polygraph testing on Thursday night's "Nancy Grace" broadcast.

Dunn also said that her boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, also failed his polygraph test. Since then, Adkins has left Colorado City and is now staying with his grandmother in West Texas. Dunn said she asked Adkins not to come back.

KTAB's Priscilla Luong was told earlier in the day by her sources that Dunn and Adkins failed their polygraphs.

Dunn said investigators asked her if she had caused Hailey's disappearance, and if she was afraid of answering their questions.

Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, has not taken a polygraph yet, and is not scheduled to take one at this time. He says he has volunteered to take a test.

The last portion of the interview centered around Billie Dunn's current boyfriend.

Billie told Nancy Grace she dated Shawn Adkins for two and a half years before they decided to move in together. They were living together for four months before Hailey disappeared.

According to Billie, she met Adkins on Myspace and met him in person about a month later. Hailey was not present when they first met.

Dunn told Nancy Grace that Hailey and Shawn did not get along when they first met, but that their relationship had been improving. Hailey's grandmother, Connie Jones, told KCBD this week that Hailey and Shawn did not have a good relationship.

According to Nancy Grace producers, the show may feature this case again on Monday evening.

Additional searchers were brought in Thursday evening to canvass neighborhoods near Hailey Dunn's home, according to Mitchell County Sheriff Patrick Toombs early Friday morning.

Members of the task force, as well as additional searchers, will re-canvass the neighborhoods on January 7, knocking on doors and re-interviewing people.

There were no results following a helicopter search Thursday of the north eastern part of Colorado City, an area bordered by I-20, Hickory and 17th Streets.

Rumors that Hailey's body was found behind a local store are unfounded.

Nine agencies are currently working on the disappearance of 13-year-old Dunn, including the Secret Service and Child Advisory Center.

In a press conference this morning, City Manager Pete Kampfer stated that polygraphs results were unconfirmed.

"It is my understanding that they (task force) did not advise whether a person passed or failed," Kampfer said.

Kampfer further stated that  not informing interviewees of the results of their polygraph tests is standard law enforcement procedure and to his knowledge, none of the people involved  had been informed of the results.

DPS Trooper Sparky Dean said three DPS operators and one FBI operator had administered polygraphs. "Information between parties is not even announced on who took the test or who did not," he said. "Even they don't have knowledge of who passed or failed."

Rumors that the investigation has narrowed to persons of interest are also unfounded.

"The investigation has narrowed to the neighborhoods and vicinity of Billie Jean Dunn's home," Kampfer said.

No arrests have been made and all witnesses who have come in for questioning did so voluntarily and were released afterward, according to Dean.

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- Residents in Colorado City are being asked to join the search for missing teenager Hailey Dunn.

According to a local radio station, residents are being asked to gather at the Mitchell County Courthouse in Colorado City at 2 p.m. to create search parties.

The residents would join the efforts of 12 law enforcement and missing child agencies, including the FBI, that have combined efforts to work on the case of the missing Colorado Middle School student.

Hailey, 13, has been missing since Dec. 27.

Since the story was first reported on Dec. 29 by KTXS, the case almost daily has received increasing attention – from law enforcement agencies and the media, including two broadcasts on the HLN Network’s “Nancy Grace Show.”

Hailey’s mother, Billie Dunn, said Thursday night that both she and her live-in boyfriend Shawn Adkins had failed polygraph tests.

Adkins failed the test first, she said. Then after being told about Adkin’s failure, Billie Dunn said she failed the test also. Both said they had taken medication that may have affected the test results.

Extended family members have made unconfirmed and conflicting statements that other family members have also failed polygraph tests related to the case.

Billie Dunn said she asked Adkins to leave her home because she "didn't know what to think anymore." According to Billie Dunn, Adkins was now staying with his grandmother.

Search helicopters from the Texas Department of Public Safety and billboards along Interstate 20 donated by Lamar Advertising are being used to raise awareness.

Search officials used helicopters, horses and dogs – and even state prison inmates – to search creek beds in Colorado City and the perimeter of the city Wednesday and Thursday.

Hailey was last seen on Dec. 27 when she reportedly told Adkins that she was spending the night with a friend.

However, she never made it to the friend’s house, and the friend has said she didn’t know Hailey was coming – that they hadn’t made plans for her to spend the night.

No statewide Amber Alert has been issued because the case has not met the criteria for issuing such an alert.

State officials have three times refused to issue the Amber Alert, Colorado City officials say, because there is no physical evidence to show that Hailey has been abducted or that she is facing physical harm.

IMO everyone local from Kampfer to Trooper Sparky are totally out of their skillset here and really are only doing reactive damage control.  They have never had to deal with a missing child nor the national media.  They need to hand this over to an agency with experience and call in TES.

A Search for Hailey Dunn in being planned for today...anyone willing to help is asked to meet at the Colorado City Courthouse at 2pm today. 

As for recent developments, A DPS helicopter was brought in yesterday to assist in the search for 13 year old Hailey Dunn, missing since Monday, Dec. 25th.  Among the areas searched was a brushy area behind Alco and the Sonic Drive Inn.  Lawmen were also seen removing unknown articles from the Dunn residence on Chestnut Street.  Billie Ostrander, Hailey's mom, and Clint Dunn, Hailey's dad were featured again on the Nancy Grace show on HLN last night.  Billie said that her boyfriend Shawn Atkins had failed his polygraph test and that she was told she also failed.  Billie also said she had been questioned by investigators for 10 hours.  She also stated that she did not want Shawn in her house and he has since left.  Hailey's father has not been asked to take a polygraph but stated he is willing to take one.

Moss Lake in Howard County is 33 miles away to the west on I- 20.

"The investigation has narrowed to the neighborhoods and vicinity of Billie Jean Dunn's home," Kampfer said.

Moss Lake is not in the vicinity of Billie's house.  This gets more and more confusing.

If Hailey's friends haven't come forth with any information about her, I feel things are not looking good. She is of the age that would share her feelings and her associations with her friends. This really sounds way, way bad for the outcome.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

Which of these two articles is the truth?  I'm going with "Polygraphs Unconfirmed".  JMHO The reason is, someone in LE or whatever may have let Billie Dunn think either she or her boyfriend were deceptive in order to play one against the other and etc.  They can do that.

In a press conference this morning, City Manager Pete Kampfer stated that polygraphs results were unconfirmed.

"It is my understanding that they (task force) did not advise whether a person passed or failed," Kampfer said.

Kampfer further stated that  not informing interviewees of the results of their polygraph tests is standard law enforcement procedure and to his knowledge, none of the people involved  had been informed of the results.

DPS Trooper Sparky Dean said three DPS operators and one FBI operator had administered polygraphs. "Information between parties is not even announced on who took the test or who did not," he said. "Even they don't have knowledge of who passed or failed."

Rumors that the investigation has narrowed to persons of interest are also unfounded.

"The investigation has narrowed to the neighborhoods and vicinity of Billie Jean Dunn's home," Kampfer said.

No arrests have been made and all witnesses who have come in for questioning did so voluntarily and were released afterward, according to Dean.

Could it be that Billie was informed that Shawn and her both failed the polygraphs but proper protocol was not followed in the revealing of the results?  Could it be that City Manager Pete Kampfer is attempting damage control?

I cannot comprehend what Billie's motive for lying.

Colorado City-  Texas law enforcement agencies, the Texas Rangers and the FBI are searching for clues in the case of a 13-year-old Colorado City Middle School cheerleader who has been missing since December 27.

Hailey Darlene Dunn was reported missing by her mother after she failed to return home the day after she was supposed to spend the night at a friend’s house.

Residents of Colorada City are being asked to gather at the Mitchell County Courthouse in at 2 p.m. on Friday to create search parties. The residents would join the efforts of 12 law enforcement and missing child agencies that have combined efforts to work on the case of the missing teen.

Her mother, Billie Dunn, thought she was spending the night at a friend’s home during the Christmas holiday break, but she did not return home the next day.

Hailey is 5’1, 120 pounds, has hazel eyes, and brown hair with blond streaks.

When she disappeared, she was wearing navy blue sweat pants, a light-colored short sleeve T-shirt, and pink and white tennis shoes.

Although her disappearance is suspicious, it does not meet the requirement to issue an Amber Alert in Texas, police said.

The Texas Rangers and Colorado City police have searched Hailey’s home and surrounding areas. According to CBS affiliate KOSA, rangers were seen carrying garbage bags from her house into their squad cars.

Authorities are also searching the phone records of Hailey’s mother and her mother’s boyfriend, Shawn Adkins. Both had failed polygraph tests on Thursday.

On the tenth day since 13 year old Colorado City teen, Hailey Dunn went missing, her mother admitted that both she and her boyfriend, Shawn Adkins failed polygraph tests.

Before a national audience on the Nancy Grace Show Dunn said she and Shawn did not pass lie detector tests administered to them on Wednesday.

She said Shawn refused two tests before taking a third that he failed.

Billie Dunn says she was told that Shawn failed and then immediately given one herself that she failed.

Dunn told Grace that after Shawn failed, she questioned him and told him to leave.

Adkins said he was going to Dunn, Texas to stay with relatives.

Despite at least two failed polygraph tests and the absence of Shawn Adkins, authorities have still not officially named any suspects.

Beau Berman: "How is he (Adkins) not a suspect?"

City Manager Pete Kampfer: "Well that's a good question and he may be."

Bille Dunn says she was questioned for 10 straight hours on Wednesday after Shawn failed his polygraph and the Texas Rangers searched her Chestnut street home.

The FBI, Texas Rangers and Department of Public Safety helicopters are all investigating now.

But their efforts didn't begin until a week after Hailey first went missing.

Beau Berman: "Why weren't those things happening a week ago?"

DPS Trooper Sparky Dean: "I think as this progresses, you know, obviously the local folks hoped that Hailey would be at somebody's house".

Thursday night experts on the Nancy Grace Show were highly critical of the Colorado City Police Department's response.

Initially, the police chief classified Hailey as a "runaway" when she disappeared December 27th.

The spokesperson for the Police Department and Colorado City, Pete Kampfer, is in turn upset that the state has refused to issue an Amber Alert despite at least three requests from the city.

Beau Berman: "How frustrating is that?"

Kampfer: "It's really frustrating. Again, we have limited resources and impact. We're a remote town in west Texas."

DPS helicopter surveillance did not appear to uncover any new leads Thursday as it combed Colorado City by air.

But several rumors surfaced Thursday afternoon, one claiming that Hailey was found behind the ALCO store in town.

While the hearts of the more than 4000 Colorado City residents were hoping they were true, the rumors proved false.

For Billie, the entire ordeal is a nightmare.

"We've got to have her back. We can't live without her. She's my baby", says Dunn.

While Hailey hasn't been found alive, authorities say they're happy she hasn't been found dead.

A bright spot is that the Lamar sign company is posting Hailey's photo and details of her disappearance on electronic billboards across Interstate 20 and across the state.

The electronic billboard on highway 191 between Midland and Odessa is also reportedly part of the initiative.

At this point Colorado City residents and the rest of the nation are hoping for a few more good signs.

"We talk about how much the law enforcement is involved, but hey, you've got John Doe citizen up and down the roadways in every direction you point that are out there just as much as we are looking and helping to find her so it's going to happen, Hailey's going to be returned", says Trooper Dean.

COLORADO CITY -- Law enforcement officials in Colorado City are back on foot today.

Wednesday, officials discontinued a foot search for missing Colorado City middle school student Hailey Dunn to conduct a helicopter search Thursday.

Today, City Manager Pete Kampfer said, officers are back on the street to conduct door-to-door interviews. Plain-clothed officers dispatched from a temporary command center this morning to canvass the town in search of clues. Senior Department of Public Safety Trooper Sparky Dean said officers will be going door-to-door in the northern part of Colorado City and will be looking for physical evidence and general information.

"We're hoping they'll be voluntary in nature," Kampfer said of community members.

Officers have been told to look specifically for the missing teen, Dean said, adding authorities aren't interested in learning of any illegal activities unrelated to Hailey Dunn's disappearance.

"Part of finding Hailey is finding out where she is not," Dean said.

Dean said officials are asking those questioned in homes if they know anything about Hailey Dunn.

Meanwhile, A grassroots effort has been started by community members to search for Hailey Dunn. The group is scheduled to meet at the Mitchell County Courthouse at 2 p.m. today.

Hailey Darlene Dunn, 13, was last seen by her mother’s live-in boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, on Dec. 27. Shawn reported he was told by Hailey around 3:15 p.m. that she would be walking to her dad’s house then spending the night with a friend, Mary Beth Garcia. Hailey’s father Clint Dunn said she never visited him that day and that Mary Beth's mother, Cecilia Garcia, said she never knew of Hailey's plans to spend the night.

As of Thursday afternoon, nine agencies were working in Colorado City on the case, including the FBI, Texas Department of Public Safety, the Child Advisory Center and secret service.

Hailey’s parents appeared on Nancy Grace last night and gave a statement to media at their home immediately following the show.

Clint Dunn said at that time he was in the dark concerning further investigation.

Billie Jean Dunn said during the TV show that she and Shawn had failed polygraph tests given to them by law enforcement on Wednesday.

Kampfer said today it is the policy of federal and state officials to not provide feedback of the passing or failing of polygraph tests. He said the two were polygraphed but they weren't advised but they weren't advised as to whether they passed or failed.

Billie Jean Dunn said she had put all her hope in the polygraphs clearing her and Shawn’s names. That confidence, she said, is now lost.

“There's no way that I would ever protect anybody,” she said. “If I thought he had anything to do with it, I would have came forward a long time ago.”

When Billie Jenn Dunn heard the test results, she said, she began to lose hope that Hailey would ever come home.

“One way or another,” she said, “somebody took her, somebody snatched her off the street. At this point it's 10 days later, and I don't have a good feeling at all.”

Immediately following the polygraph ... Billie Dunn was subjected to a 10 hour interrogation by investigators.  I am inclined to believe that Billie is revealing the truth when she claims she was informed she had failed the polygraph.

Anyways ... the truth will be revealed as the investigation proceeds.

I'm following this case but havent commented until now.

This mother's priorities are skewed, no mother in their right head would be more focused discussing a "reportedly" failed poly over finding out what happened to their reported missing child.  Last night's NG episode had me concerned & bewildered at its obsession over the lie detector tests, this time I think NG is putting too much faith in this mother being totally innocent with whatever happened to Hailey.   In other words, to me the mother's focus without belligerence or diversion, finding Hailey would be first and foremost at all times despite the questions geared away from that aim.   Why is she so heck bent on talking about not having faith in lie detectors as opposed to "please I beg of you help me find my child" and/or "there is a good chance my boyfriend did something & if so please find the evidence that proves it."   One could conclude that if she had faith in her boyfriend that he couldnt have done anything to harm her daughter she wouldnt have kicked him out & defended him because at a time like this you would think she'd need him as a support system right now, nope something is up with that.    I also have my doubts she was told flat out that her boyfriend failed the poly, not that it couldnt have happened but it remains to be seen that is what took place other than her word (remember Misty Cummings).  The only reason I see law enforcement telling her is if they were already on to something & pinning her against the boyfriend vice versus.

Something tells me that Hailey never went to go to her father's & got sidetracked or anywhere for that matter, the dog hit could have been from previous trips to her dad's.   I just do not sense that this is a stranger abduction or a runaway situation, I cant even say I hope Im wrong because no matter the outcome its pretty obvious there has been harm done to Hailey, it is just a question as to by whom & to what severity. 

I do not like that the boyfriend was laid off & the entire dynamic tells me there were elements present that could have had him and/or the mother lashing out.   I'm sure even more will come out but with the little I've seen so far we're talking about overall mature, responsible & decent individuals here.

The mother is hiding something & its obvious by her body language & facial expressions, even if its only that she knew the boyfriend was bad news & is fully aware that she did not care for her pre-teen daughter nearly sufficient enough.   You couldnt help but ask immediately upon seeing her just how old was she when she gave birth to Hailey, bottom line this sounds like another tragic case of immaturity & elicit lives risking the welfare of a minor willingly.   I am sure there are things I have to catch up on & I will but for now that is my gut reaction to this case.

Residents Forming Search Parties to Locate Missing Colorado City Teen Hailey Dunn 1/7/11

Colorado City residents are now being asked to aid more formally in the search for missing 13 year old Hailey Dunn by forming search parties Friday at 2:00pm.

Residents are meeting at the Mitchell County Courthouse to conduct a city-wide search.

Some indicate they may be walking the ten miles north to Dunn, Texas for the sake of thoroughness.

City Manager Pete Kampfer says that more than 30 law enforcement personnel are working in search parties of two, going door to door.

The city is asking the public to cooperate as they go door to door and ask for entrance.

Authorities are looking in the closets of Colorado City homes for Hailey.

The hope is that she may have been hiding or is being kept there and will turn up today.

Authorities are also searching along the Colorado River and within wooded areas surrounding town.

If you would like to join the search at 2:00pm you are asked to bring a cell phone, a water bottle and to dress in warm clothes.

I think it is a good idea that some people are thinking of walking the 10 miles to Dunn where Shawn is supposed to be staying with his Grannie now.

The Hailey Dunn Story: Conflicting Assertions Abound

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- The reporting of rumor, innuendo and misrepresentation seems to be a part – sadly – of the unfolding story surrounding missing teenager Hailey Dunn.

Despite statements to the contrary by people involved, Sparky Dean, senior trooper of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told KTXS on Friday that no one has been told whether they have passed or failed a polygraph test.

This comes despite the statement made on national television by Billie Dunn, Hailey's mother, that she and her former live-in boyfriend Shawn Adkins had both failed polygraph tests. She made this statement on live television Thursday night on HLN's "Nancy Grace."

Told of Dean's statement that no results of passing or failure were pronounced, Billie Dunn twice reasserted her position: She was told there was "deception indicated."

The misunderstanding of what did and did not occur stands as an example of the enormous challenges of news reporting in the middle of an ongoing investigation, during which assumptions and misunderstandings exist – and are sometimes reported to the public.

Furthermore, KTXS has learned over the past several days, that other family members have made various conflicting and unconfirmed claims – declaring, at different times, that at least four different people have failed the polygraph tests.

Another member of the extended family added an assertion Friday morning to KTXS News that Adkins "had been cleared" of any wrong-doing.

Such assertions, assumptions and misunderstandings seem to occur in a fluid, ongoing story that is not yet complete.

Another assertion made on the "Nancy Grace Show" Thursday night stated that the Billie Dunn's home was searched on Wednesday for the first time. Officials on Friday pointed out that the home has been searched three times since Hailey's disappearance on Dec. 27.

Experts have long known that journalistic coverage of breaking news during an active investigation is a difficult assignment. Some in the news media, in a competitive environment, will rush to release scraps of information – occasionally before the facts are confirmed.

Kenneth Pybus, media law specialist and journalism faculty member at Abilene Christian University, said part of the problem comes from the tension that exists between differing roles and responsibilities of those involved.

"One of the challenges is that you have competing interests: the sources involved, the media and the law enforcement," he said. "The media are trying to quickly put out information to the public. Law enforcement is trying to find and protect evidence, see that justice is served and, sometimes, protect privacy.

"The media often frustrate law enforcement, and law enforcement often frustrates the media," he said. "And both often frustrate the sources that are involved in the incident."

Nevertheless, he said, journalists "have a responsibility to be as accurate as possible. In the end they can only report what they've been told. Sometimes they wind up repeating false information."

Spokesman: Lie Detector Results Not Released in Dunn Case

The results of Wednesday's lie detector tests on Billie Dunn and Shawn Adkins weren't released in the manner described on the "Nancy Grace" show, according to Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer.
Kampfer told KTAB News' Tiffany Tatro the administrator of the polygraph test did not release results to anyone that was administered the test.

During Thursday night's "Nancy Grace" epsidoe on HLN, Dunn said she was told her boyfriend Shawn Adkins failed a polygraph test prior to receiving the test herself. Dunn says after learning the news, she failed her test.

An expert on Grace's panel said a polygraph test administrator should never do that and revealing information of that nature could cause someone to fail a test.

On Thursday evening, KRBC's Tim Johnston spoke with area polygraph expert Mike Gougler about whether revealing information about who passed or failed a test is commonplace. Gougler says everyone who takes a polygraph is typically told afterwards if they passed or failed, so that's not unusual.

Gougler is not directly involved with this search, and could not speak about the case specifically, but in his experience he says these type of tests can really aid in the investigation.

"When they start running polygraphs early on, they're trying to eliminate people so they can focus their efforts on the most important factor, and that's the safe recovery of the individual that has disappeared."

UPDATE: Elite Search Group on Standby in Dunn Case

Friday Morning Update:
The Dunn family has requested that Texas Equusearch takes part in the search for 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, according to TES member Cheryl Manchac.

Manchac says TES has been in contact with local law enforcement and they are currently on standby to assist.

The group says its currently working with authorities to formulate a plan about whether Equusearch should be involved and where they might be needed most.

UPDATE: Searchers Hit Streets as Dunn Investigation Intensifies

Colorado City, TX—Investigators in plain clothes will go door-to-door Friday asking residents of Colorado City for any information they might have on 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, who was been missing since Dec. 27.

After a day of twists, turns, and constant developments, Friday morning started off rather quietly in the town of 4,000, located halfway between Abilene and Midland.

Hailey was last seen on a Monday afternoon, having told her mother's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, that she was going to spend the night with a friend.  She was reported missing 24 hours later.

Volunteers have again hit the streets to look for any signs of the missing Colorado City Middle School student.  An organized search has been setup at 2 p.m. Friday at the Mitchell County courthouse. Various groups have planned other searches, with many of those searches being organized on Facebook.

Abilene's Child Abduction Unit joined the investigation today, putting the number of assisting agencies at 10.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, Hailey's mother Billy Dunn was still resting following an intense interview on HLN's "Nancy Grace" program Thursday evening.

"It's not feeling good," she said of the chances of a happy ending.

Officials continue to tell bigcountryhomepage.com they're following "substantial leads" and the search is intensifying.
"Our leads are primarily around corroboration and information from the different people that they've interviewed and talked to," said City Manager Pete Kampfer during in interview with Lane Stone. "We're corroborating all the different information and data that they've provided."

DPS helicopters are on standby in case they're needed to flying over Colorado City for a second day. On Thursday, a chopper flew over town landing at one point. City officials tell us the landing was nothing out of the ordinary and no discoveries were made during the landing.

Part of the investigation over the next few days is expected to center around sex offenders who live around the Dunn home.  Colorado City City Manager Pete Kampfer says the city is aggressively tracking sex offenders to make sure they know where they're located at all times.

"We're also following up on information that they've provided us to make sure they are where they say there are," said Kampfer.

"It's not safe (here) and this makes everybody realize it," Hailey's father, Clint Dunn, said.


Students have returned to Colorado City Middle School with additional counselors on hand to talk to students about what happened.

"We are trying to give our kids a sense of normalcy so we can give the kids a little security," Tammy Johnson, one of Hailey's teachers said."

Private donations have swelled the reward money to $25,000 for information that leads to Hailey's safe return.

I know that at first Mom said that Hailey did not like the boyfriend, but that Hailey and he had been getting along better lately..

I really don't think that it is such a bad idea to go house to house and look in closets etc..Jessica Lunsford was kept in a closet and a little girl in England was hid in an apartment for about  3 weeks before she was found..Mom was in on that one though..It could be that Hailey is hiding out or that someone is holding her against her will.. other missing kids have done that before...We have to look at everything when a child goes missing..jmo..I don't think that she is hiding but never hurts to check it all out...would be a miracle if that was the case.

Search Intensifies; Officials Looking North Of Colorado City

COLORADO CITY, Texas -- The search for a missing Colorado City teenager has intensified Friday afternoon, particularly on the northern areas of town.

Dozens, if not hundreds, of volunteers are combing though vacant lots, and a dozen of law enforcement officers from several departments are knocking on doors, two-by-two, interviewing residents and checking closets and any other possible hiding place for Hailey Dunn.

Law enforcement officials are focusing their search on the northern areas in Colorado City, and KTXS has learned, as far north as the community of Dunn, about 13 miles north of Colorado City. Search officials have also said they’re interested in searching an abandoned cotton gin in the area.

More than 15 billboards featuring Hailey Dunn have gone up – from Abilene to the Midland-Odessa area. Although an Amber Alert has never been officially approved or issued, the billboard space has been donated by Lamar Advertising.

Officials working the case also spent time Friday correcting misunderstandings or misinformation in case.

Sparky Dean, senior trooper in the Department of Public Safety, told KTXS on Friday that none of Hailey’s relatives has been told of any failures of polygraph tests.

This information contradicted statements made by Billie Dunn, who said that she and live-in boyfriend Shawn Adkins had both failed the tests. She made her statement on the HLN’s “Nancy Grace” show Thursday night.

Dunn, contacted Friday after Dean made his statement, reasserted her claim that she was told there had been “deception indicated” in the polygraph tests.

There are now 12 law enforcement and child protection agencies involved in the case, including the FBI, and 30 law enforcement officials on the ground working the case.

Hailey, an eighth-grade student at Colorado Middle School, has been missing since Dec. 27.

Mystery Deepens Around Missing Teen Cheerleader

More than a week ago, 13-year-old cheerleader Hailey Dunn vanished from central Texas without a trace.

The last person who saw her was her mother's boyfriend, Shawn Akins, who reportedly says the girl was going to her dad's house and then would spend the night at her friend's place.

Dunn never showed up at either location, according to CNN. Police also say that the friend didn't know Hailey was coming over.

People in her hometown of Colorado City, Texas – located 70 miles west of Abilene – are up in arms because an Amber Alert was never released.

Police tell the Abilene Reporter-News that their requests were denied because there was not enough information that Hailey was abducted.

Adkins has met with police and has not been named as a suspect, but there are conflicting reports about whether he took a polygraph test.

Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn, told KTAB news that her boyfriend did indeed take the test, but several other family members have said he refused.

Texas Rangers and Colorado City Police have searched the home Hailey shared with her mother, brother David Dunn, and Adkins, as well as the surrounding area for clues.

According to KTAB, bloodhounds tracked Hailey's trail to a motel near her home last week. Authorities have continued to search the town's wooded areas by horseback and foot.

There is a $25,000 reward is being offered for the girl's safe return.

Totally agree about the closets if OTHERS are searching, I guess I read it wrong and they wanted folks to search their own closet but others closet's is different and sadly Jessica was alive 3 days IIRC and alot of it in the closet ::MonkeyMad:: I still can't believe nobody else in that scum's family were arrested. Always can look forward to a miracle and pray (what a nice change that would be)....I do also consider the proximity to the highway and random abduction, it only takes a second to snatch someone.

Colorado City is not a great place. DH and I spent alot of time there this past summer for his work. Uck.
