Relatives say they last saw Marizela Perez, 18, at about noon Saturday in the Rainier Beach neighborhood where she lives. She was heading to a library on the UW campus.

According to the student's aunt and uncle, Lauro and Melinda Mendoza, a witness claims to have seen Perez at the Safeway on Brooklyn Avenue Northeast in the University District later that afternoon.

 ::snipping2::

Lauro Mendoza said he last saw her at noon Saturday and expected her back at dinnertime.

"She always comes home on time," her uncle said. When she didn't return, Mendoza went to the UW campus Saturday night with his daughter and Perez's boyfriend to search for her.

"This is very hard on every member of the family," Mendoza said.

God Bless Marizela, I pray they find you safe.  ::MonkeyAngel::

I hope I am wrong, but it annoys the fire out of me when a well-grounded young woman goes missing and LE says there is no indication of foul play -- what an oxymoron!

Searching for Marizela: An update

 ::snipping2::

The Seattle PD says it has probable visual identification of Marizela boarding the Othello train near her home in the Rainier Beach area and commuting into the University District during the noon hour on Saturday. A Seattle PD detective from the missing persons bureau says there’s evidence that she was last seen Saturday afternoon at the Safeway in the city’s University District on 4732 Brooklyn Ave NE between 1-2pm. At some point during that time, purchases were made on her debit card.

The police say they “have no reason to suspect foul play” at this point. There are several reasons and grim evidence that cause the family to remain gravely concerned about Marizela’s safety, health, and well-being. As mentioned yesterday in the flyers the family is handing out, Marizela was taking anti-depressants and has been for some time. As my family gets on the ground to continue the search for Marizela, please continue to get the word out to anyone in the Seattle-area you know. Here’s the updated info on her last known location/time. If anyone saw or talked to her in the University District Saturday afternoon or has seen her since, please contact law enforcement ASAP:

We’ll also discuss the case of Marizela Perez, who has been missing in the Seattle area since Saturday afternoon. Marizela’s case has a connection here at Hot Air, as she is the cousin of the Boss Emeritus, Michelle Malkin. Michelle is trying to spread the word through Facebook and Q13Fox/KCPQ in Seattle. We want to encourage prayers for Marizela’s family, and also try to reach anyone in the area who knows where Marizela might be and ask them to contact the police.
Michelle has new video of the moments before Marizela’s disappearance:

Activity Reported on Missing College Woman's AOL Account, Father Says

Published March 18, 2011

The father of a missing college woman says his daughter -- or someone using her AOL instant messenger account -- logged on to a computer Wednesday, the Seattle Times reports.

Edgar Perez, whose 18-year-old daughter Marizela disappeared March 5, said family members noticed activity on the young woman's AOL instant messenger account Wednesday night.

Perez reportedly said relatives in Connecticut noticed that the woman's screenname was lit up, indicating that she or someone else had logged on to her account on the popular instant messaging system.

"They saw she's online," Perez told the newspaper. "We're not sure it's her or someone else logged on. Hopefully, she's sending messages to friends. Hopefully, she's the one who logged on."

Update 3/18: A setback this morning. Just heard from Marizela’s dad Edgar that the police have checked out the AOL/AIM lead. Here’s what he told me:

“Update from Det. Eng: Per AOL, Emem has been logged-on since March 9 using her cell phone and never logged off. She never sent out any messages either.”

We move forward. Continued prayers and support so appreciated.

Missing UW student's family looks for clues from her AOL account
March 18, 2011

A missing University of Washington student or someone using her cellphone logged onto her online AOL account March 9, four days after she was reported missing, according to her father.

Perez's father, Edgar, said Friday that Seattle police contacted AOL and learned someone had used her account. She sent no messages, however, Perez said. The account was still logged on Friday.

But it wasn't until two days earlier — Wednesday — that relatives in Connecticut noticed her AOL instant messaging icon was lit up on a friends list, indicating the account was active. Perez also said someone could have turned on her phone March 9, which could automatically log onto AOL.

"They saw she's online," Edgar Perez said. "We're not sure it's her or someone else logged on. Hopefully, she's sending messages to friends. Hopefully, she's the one who logged on."

He said police are contacting AT&T to see if it can determine where the call was made.

Perez was carrying her laptop and cellphone when she disappeared. He said his daughter had never disappeared before, and even if she was going to be late for something, she'd always call.

Edgar Perez, who lives in New Jersey, said he's encouraged by the news and hopes police can get to the bottom of the activity on the AOL account.

Police have said they don't suspect foul play in Perez's disappearance.

http://www.filipinoreporter.us/home/filipino-american/708-michelle-malkin-joins-frantic-search-for-a-missing-relative.html

Popular conservative Filipino-American blogger and political pundit Michelle Malkin has appealed for public help in a nationwide search to find her missing teenage cousin from New Jersey, who disappeared two weeks ago in Seattle, Washington.

Marizela “Em Em” Perez, an 18-year-old University of Washington freshman from Egg Harbor Township, N.J., left the Rainier Beach neighborhood in Seattle at about noon of March 5 and was likely headed for a light rail station and then eventually on to the UW Seattle campus, according to Mark Jameson of the Seattle Police Department.

Her parents Edgar and Jasmin Perez have flown from New Jersey to help in the search of their only child, who lives with her aunt and uncle while attending UW, a cousin told the Filipino Reporter.

 ::snipping2::

“The King County Search and Rescue division has been alerted, but cannot launch an official search mission until law enforcement receives more information and leads on where Marizela went after she left the Safeway,” Malkin wrote in her blog on March 14

Have the aunt and uncle been looked at?  Could she have made it back home and unc or someone else in the home have made a move on her and it go the wrong way?  They probably were able to ping the cell but just not telling all just yet. Unless a gun was used it would be hard for someone to kidnapp her off the train I belive.  She made it to somewhere but where?  Could she have just run?  I guess we won't know just yet.

SEATTLE – The family of missing University of Washington student Marizela Perez launched a new search for her Wednesday morning. This time the focus is on Seattle’s Discovery Park and the family is calling it a “recovery effort.”

 ::snipping2::

To aid in the new search effort, her family has hired a professional search team from Texas with K-9 search dogs. They'll be joined by family and friends who flew in from the East Coast.

They're not giving up hope but, at this point, the family is calling this a "recovery effort."

The search for Marizela; Plus Seattle fundraiser/benefit concert in May
By Michelle Malkin  •  April 13, 2011 09:11 AM

There has been much going on behind the scenes and I’ll have more to say when there’s more to say, but to answer some of the local media who have contacted me this morning:

Yes, in response to a local Seattle-area blog post yesterday, we are searching more parks and other locations for Marizela with the help of an amazing, generous, and dedicated team of experts who have flown in from all across the country — including Arkansas, Maryland, Texas, and Colorado.

No, we did not authorize the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department to contact anyone about the search.

And yes, we will have more to say AFTER we allow our team to do their work.

We said we wouldn’t rest until we found Marizela.

We won’t. We aren’t.

For Seattle-area readers, Marizela’s friends are holding a benefit concert and fundraiser in May to support the family’s continuing search efforts.

Search yields no signs of student
The Seattle Times
April 13, 2011

The family of missing University of Washington student Marizela Perez searched Seattle's Discovery Park Wednesday with dogs in what family called a recovery operation, but they found no sign of Perez.

The family had obtained permits to search the park in hopes of finding the 18-year-old-student who has been missing since March 5, according to Dewey Potter, spokeswoman for the Seattle Parks Department.

Potter said the search concluded Wednesday afternoon after nothing potentially linked to Perez's disappearance was found.

Permits were issued for searches Wednesday and Thursday, allowing the family to bring in three canine teams with five people assigned to each team. Parks officials accompanied each team to make sure they avoided environmentally sensitive areas. Seattle police also were among the searchers.

The permit was requested by syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin, Perez's cousin. Discovery is the only park where permits were requested, but the family had also searched Cowen and Ravenna parks and the Green Lake area.

Where is Marizela Perez? Families frustrated when loved ones vanish

By Christine Clarridge

Seattle Times staff reporter

Jasmin Perez cries as she talks about her daughter, Marizela, 19, who has been missing since March 5.

Perhaps Marizela Perez is hiding out somewhere, gathering the courage to tell her parents she dropped out of chemistry, switched her major to art and got a tattoo.

At least that's what her parents hope.

The alternatives, say Jasmin and Edgar Perez, are too horrible to accept.

Their frustration mounting, Marizela's family believes Seattle police could be doing more to find the missing woman. But they have also learned what other families in similarly heartbreaking situations face: There are few resources devoted to finding missing adults and limited avenues for law enforcement to pursue when there's no evidence of foul play.

"It is not a crime for an adult to go missing," said Luci Stewart, manager of the State Patrol's missing and unidentified persons unit.

Moreover, without evidence of a crime, police often cannot obtain a search warrant to compel Internet and cellphone companies to release information on a user's account.

This particular fact has rankled Marizela's family, who believe her email, social media and cellphone accounts could hold vital — and time-sensitive — information on her location.

Malkin says she was shocked to learn that parents lose access to such basic information once a child turns 18. Additionally, she said, she believes there is little coordination, cooperation or consistency among local, state and federal investigative agencies when it comes to investigating missing adults.
