People Gather as Hailey Dunn 'Missing' Billboard Comes Down

"I came by here everyday, said a little prayer for Hailey," said Kim Homeyer.

More than two years -- that's how long 13-year-old Hailey Dunn's face has been smiling down on drivers.

"I always looked up, I guess I won't look up at it anymore," said Michelle Green, who lives near the billboard and drove past it daily for years.

"It's an event. It's sad, but it's an event," said Kim Gentry, another Abilene resident.

A face that's captured the attention of people across the country -- and the hearts of many right here at home.

While the news of Dunn's remains being found in Scurry County came as a shock, it also provided a sense of closure for many in our community, like Colorado City native Michelle Green.

"I didn't know the little girl, but it still hurts. I have a niece the same age as her," she said. "That's all people ever wanted, was for her to come home."

"It's sad, but now at least they can put her to rest," Homeyer added.

Cars stopped and several people lined up as the vinyl billboard came down around 10 a.m. Monday, bringing this chapter of the story to a close -- A final sign the search is over.

"This is something people will remember for the rest of their lives, the Hailey Dunn story," Green said.

Four signs first went up in January 2011, according to Lamar Advertising, just a couple of weeks after Hailey was reported missing.

Lamar tells KTAB the vinyl from the billboard will be donated to Hailey's family, as they have done previously.

It's a blessing for those of us following the case that justice is being served and that she will be laid to rest.  Finding her remains will help Clint and David heal.  Clint is probably taking the time to come to terms with everything.

Hailey Dunn’s mother hasn’t been questioned by law enforcement since the Colorado City teen’s remains were found in March near Lake JB Thomas in Scurry County, her attorney said Tuesday.

“Absolutely has not,” said John Young, who is representing Billie Jean Dunn as local, state and federal investigators continue to investigate the death.

Young said Internet and other reports surfacing to the contrary are “patently false and inaccurate.”

Billie Dunn's attorney John Young spoke with NewsWest 9 Thursday to clear some things up.
 
Young told NewsWest 9 Hailey's remains are still being investigated, which is why they haven't been released to Hailey Dunn's mother, Billie. He also said regardless of what some may want to believe, Billie is just a mother, who will have to lay her child to rest, far too soon.

"We are not made privy or aware to how that investigation is proceeding," Young explained.
 
At this time, Dunn is not being questioned in the disappearance and death of her 13-year-old daughter who went missing from Colorado City more than two years ago.
 
"We have not been contacted by any law enforcement agency, other than to discuss the release of the remains," he said. ::snipping2::
 

 
"It's my understanding that the Texas Rangers and local law enforcement have asked, invited, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which we think is a good thing. The goal is to find out what happened to Hailey," he said. ::snipping2::
 

She's not in Colorado City, and I don't expect her to be back in the area until the remains are released and the memorial service is planned and it's time for that," he told NewsWest 9. ::snipping2::
 
But Young did discuss how Billie is coping. He said she's just like any other mother who is experiencing the loss of her child.
 "Certainly there is some anger in the result but really sadness and grief. She truly believed in her heart of hearts that her baby was coming home someday," he said. ::snipping2::

Since her disappearance, hundreds of people from the west Texas region have spent thousands of hours on the ground, volunteering their time, searching for Hailey. Hailey Dunn’s mother has not been questioned by investigators since the remains were found March 16 at Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County.
 
Katherine Chaumont, the spokeswomen for the FBI who is based in Dallas, said that Scurry County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers are among the agencies participating in the investigation.

Efforts to reach investigators in Scurry and Mitchell counties were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile the family of Hailey Dunn is in the process of making arrangements for a memorial service, a Facebook post from Dunn’s mother stated Thursday.
So far, the remains identified as the Colorado City teen missing for the past two-and-a-half years have not been returned to the family, so a date for a funeral or memorial service has not been set.  Remains found at Lake J.B. Thomas in March were identified as Hailey’s last Friday through DNA.
“Hailey will be released to me, but it might not be real soon as they are being meticulous collecting any evidence,” Billie Jean Dunn wrote. “I'm grateful they are keeping me updated and doing everything to insure they miss nothing. I want her home, but am definitely not going to rush them. I trust they are doing everything necessary to get what they need & to get her home.”
Her attorney, John Young said the teen’s mother wants to hold a memorial service that will be open to the public “to allow Hailey’s story to be told.”
Young said so far, law enforcement has not questioned his client in connection to the death of her daughter. And he said he does not know whether they have questioned Shawn Adkins, the former live-in boyfriend of Billie Jean Dunn and the only named suspect in the case.
In her post, Billie Jean Dunn thanked all of the volunteers and supporters and said she hoped to have a date for the service soon.
“As soon as we decide on a date for Hailey's memorial we will post it here for all of you,” she wrote. “Again thank you all so much for your prayers, your kindness, and your patience.”

Billie Jean Dunn and Adkins have denied involvement in Hailey Dunn’s disappearance from the beginning. In early January 2011, when investigators named Adkins as the only suspect, he moved out of the Dunn home to his grandmother’s home, located in Dunn.
Adkins has made very few comments since Hailey Dunn’s disappearance. He did appear on HLN show Nancy Grace with Billie Jean. He later told the Associated Press that his life had “flipped upside down” since Hailey vanished.
Billie Jean Dunn has been living in the Austin area and has insisted she has not been with Adkins in quite some time. In late 2012, Billie Jean questioned whether Adkins was involved in her daughter’s disappearance.
Hailey’s father, Clint Dunn, was excluded as a suspect early on.

A Big Spring man who found teen Hailey Dunn’s remains won’t be able to collect a more than $10,000 reward once offered in Colorado City – unless plans change.

Curtis Lloyd, however, could still garner an up to $15,000 FBI reward, although no one – including himself – appears ready to talk about if it already has or will ever become a reality.

Lloyd came across Hailey Dunn’s remains in March near Lake JB Thomas in Scurry County.

About five months ago, Colorado City officials – believing the teen would never be found alive – dissolved the town’s reward fund and returned at least $10,000 to donors.

“I hate to say it but everyone had kind of given up hope that she was alive,” said David Hoover, Colorado City’s current city manager

The decision partly was based on the FBI, which is assisting with the death probe, offering an up to $15,000 reward of its own, Hoover said this week.

Meanwhile, FBI spokeswoman Katherine Gilkinson Chaumont said reward information generally remains confidential.

“As to your reward questions, to protect the safety, anonymity and privacy of individuals that provide information, the FBI generally does not comment on reward money and its disbursement, to include if a payment is made, the amount paid, who is paid or how many people are paid,” Gilkinson Chaumont said in an email.

That means only Lloyd would know if the reward has been paid out – and repeated efforts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful since he told KTXS and other news organizations details about his Hailey Dunn remains find.

On the FBI’s national and Dallas region websites, Hailey Dunn’s poster is listed under the category of “Seeking Information” under the “Most Wanted” section.

Hailey Dunn Remembered at Memorial Mass Service

They came together to be united for Hailey one more time.

"It felt really good to know that it wasn't just us having to grieve with it, that everyone and we were all there together," said Hailey's classmate, Mason Maddox.

They prayed, sang and remembered the 13 year old cheerleader that was so close to them. The church is located a block away from where the teen grew up. And as they remembered her, friends and searchers couldn't help but think about how close they were to hailey's home. 

"Knowing that 28 months ago, that's where she was. And 28 months later we're here, having a mass for her because she's gone," said Kristy Turner, searcher. 

"Knowing that no longer will she be walking through those doors, or we won't be going over there, besides for memorial things like this, it makes you feel really sad," said Maddox. 

And though bittersweet, friends and loved ones say it's still great to see the impact that their friend had on their hometown.

As they prayed for Hailey, it was clear that she is still in the hearts of many, especially as those prayers of hope and remembrance turn into prayers for justice.

The FBI and Texas Rangers were in town to testify at the meeting of the grand jury on
Monday.

The Scurry County Grand Jury returned eight indictments against seven peopel Monday.
William Brent Roemisch, 48 of Synder was indicted for two offences.  He was indicted for
the October 23 offense of theft of ore than $1500 but less than $20,000.  He is accused of
stealing pump jacks weights without the owner's permission.

Zachary Alexander Hopkins, 26, of Snyder was indicted of the Dec 23 offence of driving while intoxicated.  He has two previous DWI's and bond is set at $5000.

Juan Manuel Rivera, 26, of Snyder was indicted for a Feb 3, DWI with a minor child in the vehicle.   He is not in custody and bond is set at $5000.

Jose Luis Medrano, 47, of Crosby was indicted for evading a police officer.  He is not in custody and bond is set at $5000.

Virginia Hernandez Rocha, 57, of Snyder was indicted for DWI with a child under the age of 15 in the vehicle.  She is not in custody and bond is set at $5000.

Two indictments were sealed and not made public.

A public memorial has been planned for Hailey Dunn this sunday at 3:00 PM at the Colorado Middle School.

It's a chance for searchers and others who were moved by her disappearance to say their final farewells.

Dunn disappeared in December of 2010.

Her remains were found a few months ago in Scurry County and positively identified in April.

Her family will also have a private service.

Colorado City—The mood was somber in the Colorado Middle School Gym Sunday as more than 200 friends family and membes of the community for Hailey Darlene Dunn.
 
Hailey had been missing since December 28, 2010. Her remains found on March 16 at Lake Thomas near Snyder were identified as belonging to Hailey on April 26.
 
“We’re here to reflect on her short life and honor her memory,” Colorado Middle School Principal Mark Merrell said. “Hailey is gone but her memory lives on in our hearts.”

Hailey’s family including her mother Billie Jean Dunn, father Clint Dunn, brother David Dunn and grandmothers Connie Farmer and Connie Ostrander sat on the front row during the service.

There were recorded statements from Billie Jean and other family members that played on a video during the service.

The service lasted about an hour and a half and ended with the crowd lighting candles to honor her memory.

Linda Hopper I loved that Connie made a "grand" entrance in a sense. When she first arrived she seated herself in the stands with some of what I guess would be some other family members. I'm not familiar with them all. Billie and HJ approached Connie from the floor and I'm assuming ask her to join them on the main floor with other family members. Some of the members from the Biker club escorted Connie down the steps and on to the floor where she was seated next to Clint. It was a heart breaking moment when she was grabbed and hugged by David. A very tender moment when she was hugged by Clint. BD even managed to hug her as well. My only complaint was I was unable to hear what was being said. I am deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other.

Dunn wants daughter’s killer found

Billie Jean Dunn is now focused on finding out what happened to her daughter, Hailey Dunn, whose remains were found in March near Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County.
 
She fears her daughter could have fallen victim to human traffickers but at the same time she remains suspicious of her former boyfriend. Most of all, she hopes her daughter knew she was never alone.

It's been over a month since remains found in Scurry County were identified as Hailey Dunn's. And since then, no word has come out as to how she died. And while many have their theories, confirmation takes time.

"There could be skull fractures, there could be broken bones. Forensic pathologists can examine those bones and determine whether these are impact wounds or old fractures or new fractures, or if they've healed or if they haven't," said Sgt. Lynn Beard of the Abilene Police Department.

Broken bones, injury to the tissue and bullet fragments fragments are just  few of the ways investigators are able to tell if someone was murdered or died of other causes. For example, a cause of death was determined based on only a skull due to the visible fractures.

"Had that been a case where, for example, the victims wrists had been cut and they bled to death, then there was no hard-bone injury, it was all soft tissue type injury, and that tissue is gone because of animal activity and decomposition and that certainly makes it  more problematic," said Sgt. Beard. 

And in cases with very few remains, it takes even more time.

Hailey Dunn's Uncle Speaks Out from Jail

Del Ostrander, Hailey Dunn's uncle and Billie Dunn's brother, was arrested for drug possession, but is speaking out about his niece's death.

"I don't have no kind of involvement with my niece missing," said Del.

It's been two and a half years since Hailey Dunn went missing.And her uncle is finally speaking out.

"The day she went missing, I was in county jail," he said. "I got out of jail that day."

Though some have suspected his involvement with Hailey's death, he tells me he doesn't know what happened to her. But he believes, looking back, he could have stopped something from happening.

"When I seen her on Christmas, she asked me to come spend the night with her," he explained. "I should've spent the night there because she went missing, I think, that next day."

But whether or not he really could have saved her is speculation. And now, speculation shifts to who did it.

"People think they know what happened. I think i know what happened. I think Shawn Adkins kidnapped my niece in the morning sometime and killed her, I guess. But you can't put the blame on somebody until you know what happened," Ostrander said. 

Speculation also falls on Billie Dunn. But, Del tells us that he doesn't think his sister was involved.

"My sister, I've known my sister for 26 years," he said. "My sister ain't that kind of person."

Del says he hasn't seen or talked to anyone since the memorial a few weeks ago, which was an emotional experience for him.

Two arrested for delivery of meth

Colorado City Police Officers arrested two males on May 26th after finding drugs and packaging materials in the vehicle that was stopped during a routine traffic stop.

Del Ostrander, 26, and Kevin Ruth, 25, were arrested and charged with manufacturing or delivery of a controlled substance. Both men also had outstanding warrants, one in Mitchell County and one in Scurry County.

While on patrol in the area of the 1200 block of Westpoint Avenue, an officer saw a pickup belonging to an individual with an outstanding warrant. After a brief pursuit of the vehicle, a stop was made in the 300 block of Austin Street.

Both Ostrander and Ruth were arrested and methamphetamines were found during a search of the vehicle, along with materials used to divide and package the controlled substance.

According to the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Ostrander was charged with manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, a Class 1 Felony; criminal mischief and evading arrest, a Class 3 Felony. Bond amounts were set at $50,000, $7,500 and $1,500.

I too wonder about Hailey's case.  However, I feel having suspicions or even enough evidence to make an arrest isn't enough.  I would want to see enough for a conviction.  Sometimes it feels like justice is a long, long time coming, but I wouldn't want to see the case messed up and anyone going free over errors. It's a story that received national attention: the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn from her Colorado City home in December 2010.

For over two years, volunteers and law enforcement officials searched for the teenager, hoping she would be found alive. In March of this year, a rock collector discovered human remains in a dried-up portion of Lake JB Thomas in Scurry County, about 20 miles from Hailey's home. A month later, the remains were confirmed to be those of Dunn.

While the search for Hailey's body is over, the search for clues into her death remains very active. The Scurry County Sheriff's Office, Colorado City Police Department, and FBI continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hailey's disappearance and ultimate death.

Sunday will mark the one year anniversary that Hailey Dunn's remains were found. The Colorado City cheerleader disappeared just after Christmas 2010.

The family of Hailey Dunn wants a grand jury to either look more closely at the evidence they have or allow the family to bury what's left of Hailey.

On March 16, 2013, Hailey's remains were found less than 20 miles from her home at Lake J.B. Thomas in Snyder. NewsWest 9 spoke with family spokesperson Stacie Campbell who said a petition was started to help speed up the process of bringing Hailey home to lay her to rest.

"The unbelievable outpouring of families of murdered and missing children who really networked with us to get Hailey's signatures. We needed 500 and we got 700. The petition is headed to Scurry County and is going first class," Campbell said.

The petition was started by Michel Gouveia Allen, who was one of the 5,000 members of the website "Hope For Hailey", that's where the initial idea to go ahead with getting better justice for Hailey started.

"The petition says arrest somebody. Convict somebody. Release this baby, let her go home. Let her rest," Campbell said.

December 27th, 2010 was the day Hailey was first reported missing. Initial reports were said Hailey was going to stay with a friend.  ::snipping3::  The mother of Hailey Dunn says she just wants an arrest to be made to give her daughter the burial she deserves.

"Of course we still don't have her remains and there still hasn't been an arrest. I thought I think a lot of people thought there would be an immediate arrest. I feel like we really need that especially as a family there is a murderer on the loose, number one. Number two, we need justice for my daughter."

There is online prayer vigil on Facebook for anyone wanting to remember Hailey Dunn. The event is called "Hope for Hailey."

COLORADO CITY – In 2013, Hailey Dunn’s remains were found at Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County, an arrest for her murder has yet to be made. Hailey was 14-years-old when she went missing back in 2010 from her home in Colorado City.

Last Saturday, Hailey would have walked the stage and graduated high school.

The search for Hailey may have ended two years ago, but for community members and her friends that wasn’t enough for closure.

On Wednesday, they tell CBS 7 they feel that the person who murdered Hailey is getting away with it.

Four years after Hailey Dunn’s disappearance, her childhood home stands rather silent, an almost somber remembrance of what was happening two years ago when the news spread that Hailey’s remains had been found.

“I drove by here the other day in fact, it’s sad. It’s a sad remind of how wrong everything went that day,” said Cat Geiger, a woman who searched day and night for Hailey Dunn.

Two weeks ago, Hailey’s mom Billie Dunn was called in to meet with Scurry County investigators.

“The case is still very much active, he’s got pictures of Hailey up in his office,” said Dunn.

Dunn says investigators continue processing new evidence, and left the DA’s office with newfound hope.

“I did leave there feeling like I am going to see a conviction, and that it is in grasp now. It’s within reach, it’s not so far off,” said Dunn.

A burning question hangs in the air, not only in Colorado City, but across West Texas.  When will we know what really happened to Hailey Dunn? 

"I don't think I've ever asked for help, actually," Haley's father, Clint recalls. "I'm asking for help now."

A lot of people have been searching and waiting for an answer to that question,  but probably none as anxiously as Hailey's father, Clint.

"Man, that was such a hectic time. I didn't know what to do. It had never crossed my mind that this would ever happen. I wasn't prepared for it, and i was running around like a chicken with his head cut off."

His daughter's disappearance sent Clint on a downward spiral into an abyss that, at the time, had no escape.

In the midst of all the darkness, Clint never lost sight of Hailey.

"I was very depressed, very depressed and feeling of guilt that i didn't protect her," says Clint. "I was her greatest protector and I felt like I failed there. It absolutely knocked me down."

Hailey was only 13 when her mother, Billie Dunn, reported her missing December 28, 2010. 

Investigators say the last person to see Hailey was her mother's then live-in boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, on the afternoon of December 27. Billie and Shawn have their own versions of what happened that day.

Sworn affidavits, filed in the months after Hailey's disappearance, say nothing was missing from her room; not her money, her favorite clothes, or even her new ipod. 

Hailey's brother, David, said she was playing a video game in the living room when he left the house around 9 p.m. on Sunday, December 26. 

Clint recalls the last time he saw Hailey, too. "It was the day after Christmas. She spent the night with me on Christmas night, and she had slept in until around 11 that morning.  I was in the living room, watching TV.  She briefly came to me and told me she was going home. I gave her a hug and sent her on her way. [Billie] thought she was at Mary Beth's. Then we found out she hadn't been to Mary Beth's."

Hailey was very familiar with the area, having lived in Colorado City all of her life. It's not likely for her to have gotten lost, and it was not like her to just take off without telling anyone, especially her mother. 

Even so, no one in the neighborhood reported seeing Hailey take a walk that day. 

For Clint, things just weren't adding up.  he says Colorado City Police were telling him Hailey had simply run away. 

"Everybody told the police, 'That's not even in her vocabulary.' She's not a runaway.  She did not run away with anybody. She did not run away at all.  We stressed that to police,  but it still took them seven days to see that this wasn't a runaway. "

As the investigation continued, police started noticing inconsistencies in Shawn Adkins' statements, especially around the day of Hailey's disappearance. Shawn soon became a person of interest. 

One year went by, then two, and still no new leads in the case. Folks in Colorado City remained hopeful but that proved to be harder for some than others.

"After a year had passed, I was thinking she was gone. I felt it. I was exhausted, absolutely exhausted."

Then, in March 2013, police got a possible break. 

Human remains were found near Lake J.B. Thomas, near Snyder, in Scurry County. That's not far from Colorado City. 

If they turned out to be Hailey, it would be the end of one nightmare and the start of another for Clint. "The first thing I did was picture my daughter dead, and that absolutely destroyed me when i found out she was gone.  There was no finding her alive."

If it was not Hailey, everything would go on as it had for the two years, Clint thought.  It was a double-edged sword.

"I was relieved she wasn't locked up in a cage the whole time, or still being tortured and raped. So, it somewhat relieved me in a way to know my daughter wasn't suffering."

Then, in April, everyone's worst fears were realized. The remains found were positively identified as Hailey. It was a blow that, try as he might, Clint was not ready for. 

"It was a hard knock. It was a hard punch to the face. Before the body had been sent off to be examined and verified, yeah, I knew it was her." 

The five year anniversary of Hailey's disappearance is coming up. Her remains were found and identified more than two years ago. One would think the case was close to being wrapped up.

It frustrates Clint to think that his daughter's disappearace and death may not be any closer to being solved today than before.

"The case has gone from law enforcement to law enforcement. Each time, they start all back over on the case and end up no where. Every time."

However, one thing hasn't changed. There is still an urgent cry and an insatiable thirst to find justice for hailey.   

"I'm just going to say it like this: we all know who did this," Clint said. "It's not fair that this type of person gets to go free after doing such a horrible thing to such an innocent person."

he Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Ranger Unsolved Crimes Investigation Team asked for the public’s help Wednesday in solving the murder of a 13-year-old middle school cheerleader who disappeared just after Christmas in 2010.

Hailey Dunn of Colorado City disappeared on Dec. 27, 2010 after leaving her mother’s house to visit a friend.

Her remains were found on March 16, 2013 near Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County.

The eighth grader, who was active in cheerleading, sports and band, was the focus of months of intensive searches in and around Colorado City and surrounding fields and landfills.

More than 100 billboards featuring her picture and information about the case were set up along interstates in West Texas and other states.

In June 2011, her mother, Billie Jean Dunn was sentenced to probation after pleading no contest to lying about her boyfriend's whereabouts when officers sought him in March 2011.

She received a 90-day jail term, probated for one year, on a charge of making a false report to law enforcement.

Dunn was arrested March 17, 2011, and charged with lying about the whereabouts of Shawn Adkins, who was later found at her home.

Dunn and Adkins have both denied involvement in Hailey's disappearance.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers recently featured Hailey Dunn as part of their new 'unsolved crimes' program designed generate new leads for cases in the state that have gone cold.

Billie Dunn, Hailey's mother, spoke to BigCountryHomepage after her daughter's case was featured, saying, "I think it was a good idea to get the public's interest again. It's been almost five years. They need to get Hailey. . . or make sure Hailey's face is still being circulated and the story is still being circulated."

DPS says Billie is contacting investigators for updates regularly, but unfortunately, there's still not much information on who killed Hailey Dunn.

Adkins is still a suspect in crime, according to DPS who claims they are investigating other leads as well - tips of all kinds are coming in from individuals claiming to know what really happened to Hailey.

Investigators told KTAB/KRBC that Hailey's remains did provide information that's aiding their search for justice, but that information cannot be released without compromising further investigation.

What was once Hailey Dunn's home will soon be a vacant lot. According to Colorado City's City manager, David Hoover, Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn, and her former boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, left the home about three years ago. Since they left, the city took over the home. Hoover says they have tried to maintain the house, but it became a hot spot for squatters. He says drugs continued to make their way in and out of the home, which posed a danger for the community.

"We've tried to close it several times, and we've gone through it and found drug paraphernalia," Hoover says. "We just decided it was better for our community if we go ahead and get rid of the house."

Hoover says the home became such a safety hazard that the city decided not to salvage any of the scrap metal, or allow the public to salvage any of it.

Search efforts for the missing teen spanned the course of three years. In 2013, Hailey's remains were found in a dried up lake bed at Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County. On the anniversary of her disappearance, Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn, sat down with KTAB to talk about the emotional anniversary.

"It's the same as every day," Dunn said. "I feel sadness over not having her home yet. I feel anger over not having an arrest yet. I feel anger over somebody not having any remorse to confess. It's always in the back of my mind," she continued. "I just try to keep very busy."

Billie said although Hailey's killer is still at large, she still has hope that justice will be served.

"I still want to believe every time they tell me there's going to be an arrest soon," she said. "I keep that faith."

A Big Country murder will be in the national spotlight once again. Hailey Dunn went missing six years ago and her mother Billie Dunn has remained vigilant in finding her killer.

Dunn was recently back in the Big Country recording a nationally syndicated show called "Crime Watch Daily."

"I think Hailey's killer is going to see her face again six years later," stated Billie Dunn, "and know that we're not stopping."

COLORADO CITY -- Hailey Dunn's remains are being released to her family after nearly four years.

According to Billie Jean Dunn's lawyer, John Young, the University of North Texas Medical Center released her daughter's remains just after noon Monday.

Young tells CBS 7 that Hailey will be laid to rest in Luling, Texas outside of Austin though the exact time and date have not been set.

Hailey first went missing from her Colorado City home on December 28th, 2010. An arrest in her case has yet to be made.

Sean Adkins, Hailey's mother's ex live-in boyfriend, remains the only suspect in the case.

Young says Scurry County District Attorney Ben Smith and investigator John McDaniel deserve great credit for helping move the case forward and allowing Hailey's family some closure by having her remains released.

According to Billie Jean Dunn the funeral will be a private family gathering.

(VNO) — According to news reports, Hailey Darlene Dunn, the 13-year-old west Texan whose 2010 disappearance grabbed the hearts of the nation, was finally laid to rest yesterday in a private family ceremony.

A ceremony that did not include her father.

Clinton Dunn, Hailey’s father, learned about her funeral by reading an article on social media. Contrary to what some outlets are reporting, Mr. Dunn was not present at the funeral: he was not invited by his ex-wife, nor was he provided any information about where it was to take place.

All Clint Dunn knows is that his daughter is now buried in a double plot meant for his daughter and ex-wife, in Luling, Texas, just outside of Austin. He learned of that, too, by reading about it on social media.

I’m worried about getting justice for Hailey, and Billie Jean is worried about getting her remains, burying her, and issuing press releases about it”, Clint Dunn said of his ex-wife. The problem is, Hailey will never ‘truly rest’ until she has justice. I almost feel like, ‘let Billie Jean have this one, and soak up the attention’, because I’m the one who’s going to be in Court seeking justice for Hailey. Billie Jean might get to be there, too, whether she likes it or not'”.
Two weeks ago, Clint Dunn received a phone call from Scurry County District Attorney Investigator John McDaniel, notifying him that Hailey’s remains were ready to be released. Upon receiving that call, Dunn’s advocate called a local funeral home in Big Spring, where he lives, to begin making arrangements for her transfer and cremation.

A few days later, Dunn received a second call from McDaniel, alerting him that the remains had been released to his ex-wife, Billie Jean Ostrander-Dunn. According to McDaniel, at the time of her disappearance, Ostrander-Dunn had custody of Hailey; however, after her disappearance, Child Protective Services intervened, removed Hailey’s brother from the home, and Ostrander-Dunn lost her rights to both Hailey and her brother.

Hailey is not from Luling”, Clint Dunn told VNO. “Why was she buried there?  Why wasn’t she laid to rest in Colorado City, where she grew up, where her friends and family can visit her? She was buried in Luling for Billie Jean’s benefit. Hailey didn’t even want to be buried. Why didn’t Billie Jean know that? And if she did know, why didn’t she respect Hailey’s wishes? She wanted to be cremated, just like her Nana. We tried to make to honor her wishes by cremating her, but that wasn’t allowed to happen”.
Within hours of that notification, Billie Dunn’s attorney, John Young, issued a press release about his client receiving the remains. In that release, he profusely thanked Investigator McDaniel for releasing Hailey’s remains to her mother.  ::snipping3:: ::snipping3::

I walked the pastures looking for Hailey in the weeks after she went missing.  I was still hurting over the lack of justice for Caylee, and so when Hailey went missing in my geographical backyard, I made the trip and did my best to help bring her home.

I knew from the search instructions we were given that this was a recovery, not a search for a living child.  I am sorry our efforts weren't more successful, but glad she was finally brought home.

The fact that she hadn't received justice still breaks my heart, though.

The disappearance of 13-year-old middle school student Hailey Dunn in Colorado City hits its nine-year anniversary this month with her father, Clint Dunn, still looking for answers.

"I feel like I'm left in the darkness because law enforcement is not communicating with me at all," said Clint Dunn, speaking via telephone this week. "... This needs to move forward."

Hailey's death remains unsolved, though her remains were found in 2013 in Scurry County.

Investigators named Shawn Adkins, the live-in boyfriend of Hailey's mother, Billie Jean Dunn, at the time of the teen's disappearance, the primary person of interest, according to Reporter-News archives. He has not been charged with a crime in the case.

Clint Dunn said Thursday that law enforcement officials had indicated to him that when a body was found, an arrest would be made.

"I want to know why that hasn't happened and who do I need to get in here to try to help," he said.

Clint Dunn said he has been told the case's jurisdiction is part of the problem. 

"Their hands are tied is what they literally told me," he said, referring to conversations about the case's status in Mitchell County.

"It's not their jurisdiction because the body was found in Scurry County and not Mitchell County," he said. "They're sitting there telling me on the phone that if it was in their hands that they would be going to court right away, that they would be setting the court date."

Person of interest in Hailey Dunn murder case arrested

BIG SPRING, Texas — Shawn Casey Adkins has been arrested as a person of interest in the murder of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, confirmed by private investigator and court documents.

Adkins was released from Howard County to another agency. Howard County Jail would not confirm what agency.

KTXS reached out to Mitchell County Sheriff, Patrick Toombs, he refused to comment. He told our reporters all information would have to come from the Nolan County District Attorney.

Hailey Dunn's mother told us that law enforcement had not been in contact with her.


Adkins has long been a person of interest in the case, Dunn was found dead in 2013.

Adkins is currently being held in Howard County Jail on a $2 million bond.

KTXS is working to confirm if the arrest was made in relation to the murder.

BIG SPRING, Texas (Nexstar)- Big Spring police have arrested Shawn Casey Adkins, 35, in the death of Hailey Dunn, according to a private investigator working closely with the case.

Dunn, a Colorado City teen, went missing in 2010.

Her body was found in a remote area of Scurry County in March of 2013.

Adkins, who was dating Dunn’s mom at the time of her disappearance, had been considered a suspect at the time of Dunn’s disappearance.

HOWARD COUNTY, Texas — Shawn Adkins, 35, has been arrested and charged with the murder of Hailey Dunn.

According to jail records, Adkins was booked into the Howard County Jail on June 14. The Howard County Sheriff's Office reports the Nolan County District Attorney's Office issued the warrant for his arrest.

According to the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office, Adkins has been transferred to the Mitchell County Jail.

Adkins' bail is set at $2-million.

The Texas Rangers officially confirmed Adkins as the one who murder Dunn.

Adkins is linked to a more than a decade old case out of Colorado City. He was the boyfriend Hailey Dunn's mother, Billie Dunn, back when she was reported missing in December of 2010.

More information on Adkins' arrest is expected to be released Tuesday.

Who was Hailey Dunn?
Hailey Dunn was a student at Colorado City Middle School. She was a cheerleader and played basketball and softball. She was described as a loving, caring, outgoing teen.

She was just 13-years-old when she disappeared. Her death shook the community of Colorado City.

When Hailey Went Missing
The day after Christmas in 2010, Hailey told her mother that she was going to her father's house and then planned to spend the night with a friend. She never arrived.

Court documents state that investigators believed Adkins was the last person to have seen Hailey.

Nearly three years later, Hailey's remains were found in Scurry County in March of 2013, near Lake J.B. Thomas. That's just 25 miles north from where she first went missing and on land owned by the Adkins family.

Adkins' Link to the Case
Through the years, court documents have offered disturbing details about the disappearance of Hailey Dunn.

2011 court documents from Mitchell County indicate that law enforcement were looking into whether Hailey's mother and Adkins had something to do with Hailey's disappearance.

According to an affidavit, investigators noticed numerous inconsistencies in statements made by Adkins and reported suspicious behavior by Adkins on and around the date of Hailey's disappearance.

Adkins was the only person of interest named in the case. He was never officially considered a suspect by authorities.

Billie Dunn, Hailey’s mother, says law enforcement didn’t contact her to tell her about the arrest, and that she was alerted to it by the BigCountryHomepage.com app push alert.

AUSTIN (Nexstar)- More than a decade after she was last seen alive, a person has been charged in the cold case slaying of Mitchell County eighth-grader Hailey Dunn.

Shawn Casey Adkins, 35, of Big Spring, was arrested, June 14, in Big Spring and charged with one count of murder in the death of 13-year-old Dunn.

Dunn was last seen on Dec. 27, 2010. Her mother reported her missing the next day. Despite a search, there was no sign of Dunn until March 16, 2013, when her remains were found near Lake JB Thomas in Scurry County.

Adkins had been a suspect in the case, but was never charged. At the time of Dunn’s death, he was the live-in boyfriend of Dunn’s mother. The circumstances surrounding Dunn’s disappearance is what led authorities to Adkins initially. Ultimately, though, the investigation stalled for lack of new evidence.

In 2020, the district attorney for the 32nd Judicial District, Ricky Thompson, consulted with the Texas Rangers Unsolved Crimes Investigation Program regarding the case, and the Rangers took a new look into the investigation. The Rangers interviewed several people, and Adkins was identified as the suspect in Dunn’s slaying.

A search warrant was obtained to collect Adkins’ DNA. After samples were collected on June 13, an arrest warrant was obtained and Adkins was arrested and taken to the Howard County Jail in Big Spring.

He was then transferred to the Mitchell County Detention Center. Bond was set at $2 million.

The investigation into the case continues.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Eleven years after the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn in Colorado City, the longtime person of interest in the case, Shawn Casey Adkins, has been indicted on charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence by intentionally and knowingly concealing a human corpse, according to court records.

Dunn disappeared in December of 2010 when she was just 13 years old. Nearly three years later her body was found near Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County.

The indictments came down on Dec. 30, 2021, in the 32nd Judicial District Court and show Shawn Casey Adkins is accused of striking Hailey Dunn in the head with an unknown object causing her death on Dec. 26, 2010. This is the first mention of a cause of death from any official or court document since Hailey’s body was found.

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – One hundred fifteen pages of pretrial paperwork has been filed in the murder of Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn as suspect Shawn Adkins is set to stand trial later this year.

A final pretrial hearing has been scheduled for Adkins in Nolan County February 10, ahead of the trial, which is currently set for April 11.
