Blue Moon -  that's not an extra sock monkey leg, it's probably his poor tail.  One of my sons has a very old sock monkey with a missing ear.  I think the missing ear was caused by an accident.   ::MonkeyTongue::  I found the ear once, and put it somewhere, but it's been so long I don't remember where I put it.  Poor monkey... ::MonkeyNoNo::

Blue Moon - do you normally just cut them back, down to the dirt level?  Personally I'd probably just keep doing that as long as they keep coming back so pretty  ::rhino::

No, I read an article long time ago that once they die out to let them stand and not cut them back until the spring when you see new shoots coming up.  Once you see new shoots coming up then cut the old growth back and they will come back thicker then the year before.  I have a problem with some of the leaves dying out, especially lately BUT lo and behold I found out my hubby is spraying weed killer on the weeds outside of the mums and the wind is blowing some of it back on the leaves.  Needless to say I have had to scold him about that.   He did that to my clematis vines and I told him for every one he kills I will go out and buy 2 and I broke him from that but now he is out to get my mums.   ::CowboySmiley::

TM - our JR that past away a couple of years ago was like yours.  We used to time him to see how long it would take to destroy a toy.  He was fast!  ::MonkeyDevil::  Petey isn't as fast, he's a bit cat like.  He plays around with them for a couple days then when he gets serious, he takes them either outside or under the bed where he takes the stuffing out.

Now that they're a little older, they're not quite as destructive as they were when they were puppies...thank goodness.  But they still don't think toys should have stuffing...and the shelties still look at them like they're crazy when they do that.

MuffyBee---I was just kidding about how to chill a box of wine.  Put it in the fridge, I suppose.  I had some houseguests who actually put ice cubes in their red wine.  Another houseguest told me I was a wine snob when I seemed shocked.  I actually was shocked when he left the table and took the wine glasses with him and returned with ice,  but I'm from a different generation, I guess.  In fact I know I am.

For those of you that remember my son andn his dog Jake when he bought him, Jake is now almost 2 years old and as you can see as tall as my son and weighs in at 125lbs.....Jake is Artic wolf and Husky mixed.....although he is mostly wolf, 85 percent to be exact, I just thought I would post this update picture for you to see!

(MISSING PETS)  Jack the cat, missing for two months, was miraculously found alive at JFK Airport yesterday after falling through the ceiling tiles inside a Custom and Border Patrol room. Long-lost Jack the Cat, who caught international attention when he went missing at JFK Airport more than two months ago, miraculously emerged alive yesterday after falling through the ceiling tiles inside a Custom and Border Patrol room at Terminal 8.

“One of our deputy chief officers saw it, and grabbed it, and alerted American Airlines,” said Custom and Border Patrol spokesman Anthony Bucci.

American Airlines alerted the nation via its Facebook page that Jack had been found — apparently battered, hungry and scared.

But Jack’s not out of the kitty litter just yet.

Officials sent Jack straight to a vet in Queens, where he’s currently in critical condition and on a feeding tube, said doctors at the pet hospital.

“He’s not feeling well at all, he’s pretty critical — right now it’s 50/50,” said Dr. Matthew Cooper, speaking on behalf of Jack’s primary physician. “He has a feeding tube, he’s getting fluids through an IV, but feeding is the most important thing right now.”

Jack’s owner, Karen Pascoe, said she trusts the vets and is staying strong despite the dire situation.

Awww, I'm so sorry Jack is in bad shape!  The article I found and posted sounds like a propaganda piece from the airline.   ::MonkeyNoNo::  "... doing well at present" and being in critical condition with a feeding tube with 50/50 odds is a far cry from that, imo. I hope Jack pulls through this and can recover to be with his owners again.

I also saw the first item Muffy and thought as you did - Jack was OK and heading home to his owner.  Then I received the link from Global Animal for their article and it is a far different
story.  I am with you in hoping this has a happy ending.

BTW that Global Animal site has some good animal articles.  Unfortunately some are sad but there are also some cute stories and videos.

I looked at the site today and I agree, it does have some good animal articles.  It's true some are sad, but then I don't like to find just glossed over stories like the one cnn put out there on Jack which led us to believe he was fine and on his way to be reunited with his owner, warm and fuzzy,  happy ending etc., when in reality it's wonderful he's been found but his life is in peril and he's struggling but there's still hope. 

yes Klaas, he is a great dog and my son loves him to death, he gets into things of course but for the most part no problem and he is trained pretty good too......I think he just found a Husky to bread Jake with so I just might have grandpuppies before too long...lol

Okay, gals/guys, I would like the opinion of someone who has dealt with the same situation I'm about to explain. I know this thread is more for having fun, and if this message stops the flow of the conversation, please delete it, I will understand.

I have a cat that I adore and spend a lot of money in, and she's well taken care of. I never allow her outside because she is deaf.

Behind my house there is a street with small old houses, home mostly to retired military and African Americans. For the past 10 months I have been feeding a female cat who finds her way through the woods from that back street.

When she first came was in late December, when the temps had been 20 or below for about 5 days in a row. She was skinny to the bone, she could hardly meow, she was shaking, her fur was matted and had no shine. I couldn't tell how she climbed the porch because she was so weak.

She continued coming twice a day and I fed her, and she gained weight and looked awesomely beautiful. Then in May I noticed she was pregnant. She continued coming and at one point her belly was so big that she couldn't get through the spacing between the porch's railing. She gave birth in June. She was away for three weeks, and when she came back she was emaciated again.

She eventually got fat again, and one day in September she brought her two fat and healthy kittens for me to see, they were so cute. But, I did not want them to hang around, so I shooed them away.

So the cat never brought the kittens again.

She once spent the night inside a big flowerpot, and the next morning she went home. She later in the day came back with a broken left leg. I figured she had a fight with a dog, or got into an accident. It took two weeks for her to walk sorta well again.

Then by one of the boys in the neighborhood I found out that the owner had killed one of the kittens, the one he couldn't give away.

At that time I was about to turn the owner into authorities, because it was obvious he was not feeding the cat, and then he killed the kitten! The thought came to mind, that he had hurt the cat's leg, but I put all of it off my mind thinking I must be mistaken.

The cat continues coming to feed ravenously twice a day, quite a cost since I got to feed mine, too.

Last night the cat spent the night in the flowerpot too.

This morning I saw her playing in the back, and she seemed find. She went back to her home, and a few minutes ago she returned with a broken right leg! I mean, the leg is bent. She can't hardly put weight on it.

In just an hour. There are no puncture marks to indicate a dog or cat bit her. I'm beginning to think that the owner is abusing her and punishes her if she stays out at night.

I hope I'm not over-thinking this, and would hate to report the person since I don't know for certain what's going on, and if I'm coming to the wrong conclusions.

I can't let the cat inside and "acquire" her, because I don't know if she has fleas, diseases, and a few times when she gets startled she has tried scratching and biting me, though she lets me pet her. I don't know if she has the rabies shot, or worms, etc...

Not sure what to do about this. I have thought on trapping her in a carrier and bringing her to the shelter, then again I know she has an owner and that would be stealing. She's not neutered, so she can get pregnant, and if I decide to move, she would starve.

Arg!!! What to do?

Try to trap the cat.  Get hold of the humane society or a rescue society if you need help.  They will often loan you a humane trap.  You are not stealing the cat if you trap her and take her out of the situation imo.  Don't tell anyone in your neighborhood what you're doing.  And if you manage to trap the cat and get her to the humane society or rescue people then they will be able to look at the cat and assess it's health and get it care and a new home.  If the so called owner finds out and tries to say you stole the cat, well, then the humane society or rescue society can press animal cruelty charges if need be.  X-Rays can show old broken bones.  I'm afraid if you don't gets some help for the cat soon, it will be too late.

I just have to get the nerve to do it. I mean, my main concern is that if she's not adopted she will be put to sleep, and it's just not fair that she has to pay for the owner's cruelty with her life.

Anyway, I was really upset and apologize for the manuscript. It frustrates me how some people take responsibility for pets (and children) and they treat them with cruelty and neglect.

No apology necessary.   :smt056 There are many animal lovers here at SM and we can see how hard this has been for you to see the abuse of a kitty.  You can make inquiries about whether the shelter is a no kill, and there are rescue groups that are no kill.  There are some that will foster an animal, there are some that are angels, and they pay for the vet bills if that's the part they can do.  You see, I fully understand your fear that if the kitty isn't adopted, she will be put to sleep and that's the reason you should make inquiries.  It needs to be done as soon as possible.   Moosee, the kitty is already suffering and dying a slow death because of the abuse and neglect she's experiencing.  You are wonderful to make sure she at least gets to eat, but if she might have a broken leg, that could be really bad.  Do you fear retribution?  If so, when you call the people that can help you with the kitty, talk to them about that too.  I hope the kitty gets to a safe place soon.  

Just got back from the store with a HUGE HUGE HUGE $15 bag of mixed chocolates for Halloween.

Hopefully they will make it to Halloween.

I'd also add for you to take a video of the cat if you can.  Just in case the dude tries to say it isn't his cat.  I'll bet the HS would appreciate any evidence you can give them.

 As for your fear of the cat being put down, try to think of it this way.  What's worse, being put down at the shelter with drugs or a slow, tormented death by a sadistic owner?  I know that sounds harsh, but it is reality.

I haven't seen it LEP.  I know this sounds awful, but I really don't think I could sit and watch it.  I'm very affected by movies and programs that are like that.  While I of course support programs against domestic violence, I just can't watch  ::MonkeyNoNo::

Not sure why, but I only got three groups of kids this year, for a total of about ten kids.

Last year I had like maybe 20 groups, and I ran out of candy.

That's why this year I bought bunches. Now I'm stuck with a lot of candy... got the KitKats out and the Hershey bars... haha! The other I'm either donating, or throwing away, so I don't end up eating it.

Hopefully she went on a vacation, like another woman did last year. They searched for her thinking she had been abducted and turned out she was away on vacation with her boyfriend... forgot who it was and how it ended up.

But, this couple was going to divorce, so it may end up bad.

I tell yah, I divorced once but as soon as I hired the divorce lawyer the hubby was out the door.

I feared he would harm me or something.

Same about work life insurance, I always had my mother or children as beneficiaries... haha! Didn't want to give anyone temptations to have me killed.

Desperate (for money) people do desperate things.

He always complained that he had me in his, so I should have him in mine.

Still, I only trusted him 99%.

Lunging humpback whale nearly swallows up surfer, kayaker

A woman on a surfboard and two people aboard a kayak were nearly engulfed by a humpback whale that charged out of the water, its mouth agape, just a few feet away. Barb Roettger's video of the amazing encounter, which occurred near Santa Cruz, Calif., was posted Wednesday. The incident is one of several recent close calls in the area, where a small pod of humpback whales has been surface lunge-feeding on anchovies unusually close to shore. They've become a major draw for kayakers and boaters and at least one kayaker has been capsized, and a sailboat was struck by a whale. This circus atmosphere has led to an enforcement presence in an attempt to keep people at a safe distance from the potentially dangerous leviathans.

Jack the cat, the Norwegian Forest kitty that captured the hearts across the country when he was found seven weeks after getting lost at JFK airport, died Sunday.
According to a statement made on his fan Facebook page, the five year-old feline was euthanized Sunday by a veterinarian after succumbing to his wounds.
“Jack had extensive wounds on the back of his body, and the wounds were unable to heal because his skin had deteriorated due to the malnutrition that occurred while he was lost … The vet compared his skin condition to having severe burns over 50-60 percent of his body,” the statement read.
“The vet was very clear that she had conferred with every possible doctor regarding options for Jack, but none of them left him with a substantial chance of survival and all of them involved him suffering.”
American Airlines said in a previous statement that they assumed responsibility for covering Jack’s veterinary and medical expenses after he was found on October 26, nearly two months after becoming lost when Pascoe was traveling from New York to California.

The “Jack the Cat is Lost in AA Baggage at JFK” Facebook page has more than 23,000 followers and was frequently updated while he was missing — sometimes several times a day. Every post elicited dozens, sometimes hundreds, of comments from outraged and sympathetic supporters.

Missing for two months at JFK Airport, Jack was found 13 days ago in critical condition. Read on for more regarding Jack’s plight and the difficult decision to end his misery. Ms. Pascoe flew back to California on Saturday night. She could not be there Sunday evening: There were no available flights, she said.

A 25-year-old chimpanzee named “Panzee” has just demonstrated that speech perception is not a uniquely human trait.

Well-educated Panzee understands more than 130 English language words and even recognizes words in sine-wave form, a type of synthetic speech that reduces language to three whistle-like tones. This shows that she isn’t just responding to a particular person’s voice or emotions, but instead she is processing and perceiving speech as humans do.

“The results suggest that the common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans may have had the capability to perceive speech-like sounds before the evolution of speech, and that early humans were taking advantage of this latent ability when speech did eventually emerge,” said Lisa Heimbauer who presented a talk today on the chimp at the 162nd Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in San Diego.

Heimbauer, a doctoral candidate and researcher at Georgia State University’s Language Research Center, and colleagues Michael Owren and Michael Beran tested Panzee on her ability to understand words communicated via sine-wave speech, which replicates the estimated frequency and amplitude patterns of natural utterances. “Tickle,” “M&M,” “lemonade,” and “sparkler” were just a few of the test words.

Even when the words were stripped of the acoustic constituents of natural speech, Panzee knew what they meant, correctly matching them to corresponding photos.

The findings refute what is known as the “Speech is Special” theory.

A fairly strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has hit off the shores of Japan's southern Okinawa Island.
Officials said the quake Tuesday about 135 miles (220 kilometers) away from the island was not expected to cause a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

At 2:46:51 UTC time a 4.7 Earthquake hit Oklahoma same place as the bigger one.

At 2:59:06 UTC Time Taiwan had an Earthquake 6.9

These were all with in 15 minutes of each other today.

Klaas or somebody that may know tech stuff...

I added ConstandGuard to this computer, now whenever I type into the comment box here, it doesn't stay where I scrolled to & the letters are getting mixed up bc of the lines. The whole comment area that I'm typing in is highlighted in blue so I know it's a secure connection but for some reason the scroll isn;t working once a certain amount of space is used. This happened to me years ago on WS and there was some kind of verify thing I did in order to get it to stop. Before you ask, I have no spam attached to the computer, no viruses, I have ConstantGuard Protection Suite which also includes Norton. My cache has been cleaned & deleted, which is done before logging out of this computer daily. Does anybody have any given idea why I'm all of a sudden incurring issues with scrolling while I'm typing a reply in here? It never happened on SM for me before so I'm thinking it has something to do with the CG? Do I maybe need to upgrade something, or check a box of some sort lol? Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

Not a problem & thank you! I think it's this ConstantGuard that I added for protection. My boys are ridiculous teens that think they know everything & they told me it was a waste, it would eat memory when having Norton should be enough, and so on. I'd just HATE to tell them they were right! Sad thing is that it took me almost 4 months to get the computers all fixed and I still needed an expert's help! Now I'm $300 poorer and I think I did something wrong! God, please don't let my know it all teenage boys be right, please please please, bc I'll never live it down.

I keep telling my husband that if we had a MAC I wouldn't have to worry about spam or viruses! Wish he'd just spend a few thou so he wouldn't have to hear me harp! I never have any problems on my iPhone or any of our iPods!

Also Klaas, when you come back to this thread, I think I may have set this account up with an old email address that's been deleted. long story short but I had a techie fix our computers & use a program to track my boys online accounts, all of which were deleted. They scared me bc they didn't know passwords to probably almost 50 online accounts the idiots. Anyway, the accts that I had that weren't verified with my real name & number as backup were deleted during this process. I have 4 new emails set up, 2 in yahoo and 2 that are private. I can give you my private one if you wish. I was in Kyron's thread earlier and Sassi said you tried to contact me at a bad email address. Only thing I can think of is that it's an old one that was deleted when my computers were fixed.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! IT WORKED! Thanks Klaas & Wreck & Muffy! I sho nuff izzz a happy azz monkey now! You have no idea the headache I've endured trying to figure this crap out for the past 3 hours! All I can say is thank YOU dear monkeys that my son;s weren't right bc they'd truly never ever EVER let me live it down!

Angry Birds fans in Europe are about to get less angry. The world’s first official Angry Birds store opened today in Helsinki, Finland, complete with an oversized slingshot and shelves of plush pigs, perched much as they are in the Angry Birds game.

Why Finland? Rovio, the bestselling game’s developer, is based 15 minutes outside of Helsinki, so the new store was a natural Finnish fit. The shop’s doors opened for the first time at 11:11 a.m., European time, and had people camping outside of the store for days to be the first in line to purchase merchandise.

It is hard to believe that she was born on 8/02/11, at 4# 3 oz.
She has very doting parents, and so well cared for !
She has filled out nicely and tips the scale at 12#.
They live about 12 mi. from us, and I would luv 2 watch her, but leave it to the other G'ma.
I still have great difficulty with a knee replacement gone kaddywhompus ! It needs redone, but I am not ready.

It's easy to start a thread.

When you are on the main page of "Missing" or whatever subject you wish to start a new thread in...

Click on "Start a new Topic"

Put the heading in the top box, that will be the title of your thread. (There are limited spaces here)

And then put the link and the post in the big box below that, it's the one that you always type in.

I'm sure the mods will be glad to let you practice with one, when they're here to watch and can delete your practice thread when you've finished.

If you do it once, you'll get the hang of it.

I've done it a few times now, but I'm still nervous every time...don't know why that is!   ::MonkeyHaHa::

For those of you who make graphics, go to Google and search your album name (without the picture name and extension) and you will be VERY surprised at where your graphics are, where they have been, which sites have posted them, and who is making money out of them.

I searched for my "play" album, where I keep the graphics for posting in this message board and another I post in, and I was in a way frightened by the amount of people who use them. Most of them I get from public domain, and a few I have modified, and rarely I have made my own.

One example, two years ago I used a picture I found somewhere and animated it to use it in Scared Monkeys during Halloween.

Well, I just found that picture in a savory website, and someone is using it as theirs, even using it as a link to sell pictures in Amazon.com.

Also, if you post in some message boards, don't be surprised to find your message in other websites. I post in Entertainment Weekly sometimes and abcnews.com, and I searched for my username and found the exact same posts published in other websites.

Some posts were slightly edited but they didn't bother to delete the username.

I can see pictures being messed around with, but comments? It seems pathetic.

I wonder why this other guy was even invited on this boat with Robert and Natalee, when Robert fully suspected that they were attracted to each other, or so I have read..he was suspicious of them having an affair....something happened that night that has been kept quiet..

I thought so too, Sister. I felt that something wasn't right and wondered if maybe he had killed her accidentally, but I never did really buy the account of what happened.

Me too and because of her death, I have never really cared for Wagner or Walken.

Looks like Black Friday will be held on Thursday this year.

The ads come in the newspaper tomorrow, so there will not be much time to think about it before heading out in the middle of the night.

This year I don't have anything special in mind. I already got the HDTV last year, and I am not planning on getting a new TV in at least 10 years.

Walmart has a $248 computer, which is tempting... but I really don't need a new computer, either.

So, I'm thinking a set of glass storage bowls, which can wait until Friday during daylight.

This Canadian was forced to decline a Thankgiving dinner at the the home of my American DIL.

The plan was for youngest son and wife who are both teachers in the Fraser Valley to pick up hubby and I at 3:30 PM for the short drive across the line.  However ... business in Vancouver is where it is at tomorrow and ... construction on a new Fraser River crossing implies that "rush hour" traffic on the "freeway" begins at 8:00 AM and ends about 7:00 PM.  We would never make it home in time.  Maybe a Japanese dinner at the home of hubby's sister and BIL will suffice.

Hubby and I did have a enjoyable day.  No anticipated traffic jams on the freeway in and out Vancouver!!  I am wiped nevertheless.  I must be getting old.

Maybe son and DIL will bring us some leftover turkey, stuffing and cranberries from their American Thanksgiving dinner.  It will be tomorrow's lunch between two slices of toasted sourdough bread with a cuppa tea.

MARS HILL, Maine — The sounds of Thanksgiving — the whir of the electric knife to cut the turkey, the crack of the wishbone being separated, and the snap of fresh green beans for the casserole — are just as plentiful as the sights and smells. And for the first time in her life, Bobbi Guerrette is hearing those sounds.

Her family is giving thanks this holiday season for the end of a journey that began when 5-year-old Bobbi was born with bilateral microtia with atresia, a condition that essentially means she was born without ears. In Bobbi’s case, one of her ears was not open and the other didn’t function.

But thanks to the generosity of anonymous donors, Bobbi now has two functioning ears.

“She is currently hearing with both ears and is really surprised when she hears new sounds,” her mother, Jamie Guerrette, said on Wednesday. “Before the surgeries, she didn’t wear her hearing aid at night, so she hears sounds during the night now that she hasn’t heard before. She just told me that hearing Christmas bells is so pretty. It is interesting to her and to us as we watch her learn how her ears work.”

I cracked up; we're working on potty training, and right now it's a hit and miss situation. I suspected a dirty diaper, so I asked him if we needed to change his pull ups. He cocked his head, put a sippy cup filled hand on his hip, shrugged his shoulders and said, "Yeah....... turkey poop!"   ::MonkeyHaHa::

Bad day today. For those of you who have so patiently and compassionately  listened to my worries about KuBear through her various skin growths, I'm once again asking for a little prayer said on her behalf. This time, maybe you could include a second for me too? She had a large growth removed a couple of weeks ago. It was in a really bad place...... on her rear right knee. The report came back today and confirmed what the Vet had already suspected. It was malignant. What we didn't know is that it was stage 3 (there's only three stages). That's the "most malignant" and most aggresive. The edges were not clear. The Vet said she would suggest amputation of the leg, but since KuBear has already had malignancies in the other leg, she wouldn't recommend it.

I can go the route of chemo in Knoxville, but the prognosis is really grim even with it. We're at the end of good options. Now we just wait and watch for it to return...... it will return, probably in the same place. There is still a surgical option when it does, but that consideration is only there if it doesn't come back quickly ....... and the Vet thinks it will.

I've done all I can and have only undertaken all the procedures because she was still happy and active. I'll do what I need to for her when the time comes. It's funny the report came back today. She hasn't been herself today and I stayed home from work because of it. She's such a good girl. It's her nature to look out for me and she's done that every day of her 12 year life. I'm doing my best to do the same for her. Thanks for the prayers, Monkeys.   ::MonkeyKiss::

I am not good at giving advice, but all I can say is love her. She will know you do, and when the time comes it will be easier on both you and her.

Personally, I would do all it takes to save her even if it means both legs amputated. Nowadays there are places to order prosthesis to help dogs, just like for war heroes. As long as she is not in terrible pain, life is worth fighting for.

Take in mind that 12 years for a dog is a long life, and I'm sure she has lived a full life being loved and happy.

May God guide and inspire you during these tough times.

Dog videos never fail to conjure up some sort of emotion. And this one really brings the waterworks. The above footage shows male beagles that were rescued from a California university animal testing lab seeing sunlight and stepping on grass for the first time.

The rescue mission, which happened in June, was recently followed by a much larger one from a lab in Spain. The group that undertook the cause, Animal Rescue Media Education (ARME), rescued a total of 72 dogs in the most recent effort, 32 of them having already been adopted in Europe, according to NBC Los Angeles.

San, Thanks for sharing the video. I'm a real tenderfoot when it comes to stuff like this and literally turn away from even the animal cruelty commercials on TV. I watched with one finger on the pause button in case it was too painful, but I didn't use it. Muffy.......... this isn't a real kick in the gut......... it really leaves you with encouragement that there are people so committed to rescuing these poor dogs.

Thanks again all for the kind words, thoughts and prayers for KuBear. I've started taking her to visit my son's dog each day for a while. It seems to be helping her spirits and she's perked up some. I bought some immune booster wafers online........ probably just a sales pitch but they recommend it for dogs with cancer. 

Until today, I purposely hadn't looked up anything on Stage 3 Mast Cell tumors in dogs. It wasn't a good idea. It only gave me another occasion to have a good cry and it won't change anything. She's had a good day today, and one day at a time is the only way forward.

Yes, you can go to Yahoo and send e-mail. The problem is that the keyboard really sucks. If you have small fingers, it's a bit better, but I find it's easy to type more than one latter at a time. So a smart phone might be better to text people with than a Kindle.

Mostly, I will use the Web on the Kindle to put in bookmarks of websites I frequently go to, so I don't have to type the URL. Just hit the bookmark and start reading. But you can certainly send a short e-mail to someone, like "I'm coming late" or something like that.

From me:  I don't own a kindle but sounds like there is a regular internet browser so you can do internet stuff.  As far as getting the books, I'm sure you simply download them just as you would a song from iTunes.

Now that it's been brought up, there was a lot of old technology up for sale during Black Friday.

On televisions, Walmart and many other stores sold big screen televisions for five and six hundred dollars. Sounds like a bargain. But, the TVs were mostly the 720p resolution with 60hz. The current (and has been for years) resolution standard is 1080p.

Also the refresh rate... the bargains are 60hz, when the norm now is 120hz on LCDs, but for the past two or three years has been 240hz, and the plasmas refresh at 600hz (have for years.)

About Kindle, Kindle Fire is the newest and hottest Kindle, which sells for around $200. The Kindle being sold for less than $100 is the old Kindle, which is old technology now. Not sure on the other models, though.

Another ripoff on customers: X-Box. People don't realize that the X-Box being sold as a "bargain" for less than $100, is the 4Gb which is on the way out. The new X-Box now comes with 250Gb, which costs over $200 on sale.

One final word of advice by this seasoned shopper... if you are buying something and they offer you a gift card with money in it... chances are there is a new product that is better.

Even though one may not have need for new technology, buying the old is not using money wisely. IMO. I've learned this by experience, by asking people who know, and by doing a little research.

STAFF REPORT

Texas School Business magazine announced today that San Marcos CISD’s Animal Reading Friends program is one of 12 initiatives to be honored in the magazine’s Fifth Annual Bragging Rights 2011-2012 special issue.

The special issue, which accepts nominations and selects 12 stories to highlight, was distributed to more than 8,000 readers with a vested interest in Texas public education. With pass-along readership, the annual issue will reach at least 25,000 readers.

“We were impressed by the cleverness of this program, and it’s clearly making a difference among shy readers,” said Katie Ford, Texas School Business editorial director. “This is a model program, and we’re proud to highlight it as an example of excellence in Texas public education.”

Travis Elementary School’s Animal Reading Friends program began in September 2010 with trained Delta Society Pet Partner dogs Magellan and Moses visiting the school on Fridays with volunteer handlers Julie and Kevin Romig. The students would read with the dogs during 20-minute sessions. The program, known as ARF, is intended to pair struggling readers with a dog that patiently and non-judgmentally listens as they read.

“When reading with Moses or Magellan, the children relax,” said SMCISD spokesperson Iris Campbell. “Soon they enjoy reading aloud and are looking forward to the next time they can visit with their canine friends. Confidence grows, as do reading scores. Self-esteem and attendance improve.”

Where have the years gone ?
Tonight I bought my 14.5 Granddaughter her 1st pair of heels.
She wanted patent and they had to be 4" ! Wow, do not think I could
motivate in those anymore. LOL !

These are her 1st, and it saddens me to realize she is not "my baby"
anymore in many true senses. They look great & she walked like she
was ready for the runway.

She and I share a close bond, as her Mother left her and 2 other siblings 3 yrs. ago.
Our son does great with them on his own. I help whenever I can. Will never understand
how any Mom could do this ? They are 14, 12, and 3.5. He remains alone & I can't say I blame him.
Trust would be a major issue with anyone I think ?

Next weekend we are taking all 3 Grandchildren to Pgh., overnight & staying  in a hotel, OMG (we must be nutz ?)
Gotta boast as I am proud. ....My 17 yr. old Granddaughter is the snow fairy in the  Nutcracker with the Pgh. Ballet Co.
Cannot wait to c it ! She has danced since age 2. She did not get her graceful manner from me. I am sure ! LOL

No matter how much I try eating sensibly on Christmas, the temptations are always there. So, this year I thought on dieting a little ahead of Christmas.

I went to Sam's Club and bought a double pack of "Special K" cereal, the one that has strawberries, to eat for breakfast.

This morning i sat to a bowl of "Special K" cereal, and I almost puked.

I'm not sure if my palate is so used to fattening stuff that the healthy foods taste terrible, but the cereal was disgusting.

The big problem are the strawberries. They are dehydrated, and when you put them in the mouth they disintegrate, instead of being chewy... like strawberries.

They are unsweetened, so they are sour, and at the end there is a rotten strawberry aftertaste.

Maybe it's me, but I'm thinking on returning the crap. So much advertising and the jacked up price... maybe loosing the weight is because it tastes so bad that people rather not eat it than tasting it. Thus loosing the weight.

Writing this in case someone is thinking on buying this stuff.

Went to see my Granddaughter dance in the Nutcracker ballet over the weekend in Pgh.
Started to not feel well on my way home ....fever, chills, horrible cough.
Saw the Dr. on Mon. am and was treated for bronchitis.

4 days 'till Christmas & here I lay, not worth a darn !

I think I should postpone it for this family,  but the Grandchildren would never forgive me.....

Pray for a speedier recovery....

my hubs has the same thing..very very sick..he finally went to the doctor today and got a really strong antibiotic which he has to take for 10 days..I feel so bad for him but am glad that he finally broke down and went to the clinic...he is in Florida, flying home tomorrow, against doctor's orders..but he wants to be home...

Last year at this time New York had over two feet of snow.  So far winter has been good and very mild.

Does anyone know how to fix a computer where the typing goes wherever the cursor is pointing during my keyboarding?  It just randomly starts typing where the cursor is resting.  It has been so hard to post lately, I have mostly been reading, I have to correct so much.  It also will bring up whatever is on the bottom of the screen while I am keyboarding.  It is very frustrating.

If I didn't fix it, the above would look like this:

Bearly, I wonder if that has to do with that "compatibility" issue that causes the cursur to jump around and drives people nuts.  Let me look for those instructions.

I've had that happen and I don't know what starts it or what stops it, but it drives me nuts when it happens! I'll be watching for your response, Klaas!

In IE8 - go to "TOOLS" - scroll down to "Compatibility View Settings". Click on it and a box will pop up --the put a checkmark in "Display all websites in compatibility view"

It's been my experience that when problems like these come up it's almost always do to a browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc) and sometimes a Microsoft update as well.

I finally gave up on IE. I like it best WHEN it works but I was having frequent issues with it. I do firefox now and I've had far fewer problems.

Also to the left of the re-fresh tab there is a Compatiblty View tab.....just click on that and it should re-set for you.

Monkey Stolen From SF Zoo Found Scared But Healthy

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved squirrel monkey known as Banana Sam was returned scared but safe to the San Francisco Zoo on Saturday night, two days after he was taken.

Banana Sam was “hungry, trembling and thirsty,” after police returned him to the zoo, but a full physical examination showed he was healthy, zoo spokesman Danny Latham said in a statement.

The 17-year-old monkey was found at Stern Grove, a park about a mile from the zoo, police spokesman Carlos Manfredi said.

The monkey was found by a bystander who saw him come out of the bushes.

“He managed to coax the monkey into his backpack,” Manfredi said.

The man called police, and within an hour they met with zoo officials, who verified the monkey’s identity.  << (LOL)

Do you really have to rub it in?  It is 47 here, winds gusting up to 35 mph and tomorrow it is only going to be 35 degrees.  But it will be back in the upper 50's by the weekend.

Hope everyone had a good new years.  I spent today cleaning out my fridge, cleaning out my cabinets, then went to the grocery and filled them all up again.  I am glad the holidays are over and was really glad to get rid of ALL the food that reminded me of it.  I am fixing a meatloaf right now and have a pan of black-eyed peas on just for New Years day.  Red, Klaas, and all our "great/lovely" mods--words cannot express how GREAT you all are.  Thanks for giving us Scared Monkeys!

Ku's doing OK right now. We take it a day at a time, and I'm giving her immune regulator pills twice a day. It may not do anything but it was the best John's research could come up with and he discussed it with the Vet who got her included in a protocol study through the University of Virginia's Vet school. Basically, there's an average term of the illness at her stage (3 months) so they'll just track her progression to see if there's a significant difference with the pills. The only consistent change I notice is that she tires more quickly than she used to.......  but she is getting older, so that's not really alarming. No new growths.......... I hold my breath and check her every morning. Thanks for asking!

With all the New Year's resolutions, I got to thinking about life in general, and I agree with whoever came up with this idea:

Life should be backwards



1-You should die first, start out dead and get it out of the way,

2-Then, you wake up in an old age home feeling better every day,

3-You get kicked out for being too healthy,

4-Go collect your pension,

5-Then, when you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day,

6-You work for 40 years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement,

7-You drink alcohol, you party, you're generally promiscuous and you get
ready for High School,

8-You go to Elementary School,

9-you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities,

10-you become a baby, and then,

11-You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in luxury, in spa-like
conditions, central heating, room service on tap, and larger quarters every
day,

12-and finally you finish off as a really good time in the sack!

Can one of you that live in Florida tell me what suburb is good area to look at homes to rent when we come down to Orlando this summer?  We haven't been there in a long time so appreciate all help.  We are going to the Disney Parks a few days and then want to go to Cocoa to the Beach.  We are looking to rent a house to stay in as we have family from Tampa that will come over and spend the day with us one day.   I will be on and off today.

we usually are in Orlando area since we have an apartment there. Big area...some of the areas are of course nicer than others..We are in Winter Park/Maitland area....I think lol....
there are probably plenty of houses and condos close to Disney..Cocoa Beach is nice and if you get a day, go over to St. Augustine...very cool place!

We actually live in Illinois..someone who lives in Florida year round is probably a lot more familiar to the area..

Brings back memories of my little baby boy lying on the floor, twirling his hair (that's what he did when he was tired), and making car sounds driving his little cars up and down this.  I still have this one pictured in my closet.  Cannot bring myself to part with them.  His is the 1985 model--he was 3 years old at the time.  He was such a good boy!!!  My have times changed.

Lazy day today, keeping watch on the weather.  We had an F2 tornado down the road from us last week. I was home for lunch when it happened--it was really scary. We are under the gun tonight for more tornadoes.  It is almost 70 degrees outside so I know it will happen.  One thing I hate is it happening at night.  I always feel trapped just waiting for it to hit and then move along.

Hey Bearly, we survived the night.  The wild winds woke me up about midnight and I stayed up til about 2:00 before I went back to bed.  It was a rocky time.  We developed a roof leak from the tornado the week before--guess the wind blew the shingles back enough to let rain in.  NOW we have to have the roof replaced.  We are having flood warnings now, a creek down the road from me had spilled it's banks into the fields and covering the roads and it is still raining--calling for at least 2 inches today, not counting yesterday's rain which probably about 1 inch.  It is 63 degrees today, a year ago it was about 19 degrees and lots of snow on the ground.  Go figure!

I was going to go to the Amish store way down the highway east of me.  Someone brought me a little jar of salve for sore knees (or anything else), and it seems to work.  Got directions from a local person yesterday and ended up at a Mennonite bakery....a wonderful place, but I was only a third of the way to the Amish store.  Will have to wait for better weather.

As my closest neighbor, I love hearing from you....lol.

I go to the local Mennonites--in fact the tornado last week hit in their area.  We have the Shakers at Auburn that we go to sometimes and they have a store with all homemade goods.  I love going to their store.  Used to have a Mennonite bakery at Fountain Run but it closed up.  They made fantastic cakes and pies. 

It is still raining here, be glad when it stops.  We need to get this roof replaced soon.  Hubby told me it was winter---I told him you couldn't prove it by me.  I read up on what temps you could install roofing safely and it can be installed even in 30 degree weather so we should be o.k. with temps in the 50's, 60's and 70's.

While other animals were in the room, the staff injected a sedative into the animal, paralyzing the muscles. Then while the animal was still conscious, it was injected with a liquid that went into the heart, causing excruciating pain.

It’s a remarkable photograph: A pregnant orangutan protectively clutching her five-year-old child as death seems imminent at the hands of bounty hunters armed with knives.

At the last minute, however, members of Four Paws, an international animal-rescue group, swooped in last week and prevented their killings in Borneo, the Daily Mail reported.

"A few minutes later and the orangutans could have been dead," said Dr. Signe Preuschoft, a primate expert with the British-based organization, according to the Daily Mail. "We discovered a gang of young men surrounding them and both victims were clearly petrified.

“The gang meanwhile were jubilant in anticipation of their rewards for catching and killing the animals."

The incident, compellingly captured in a dramatic photo of the mother cradling her child for dear life, casts a fresh light on the disturbing plight of orangutans, who were once common throughout Southeast Asia but now mostly live in Borneo and other areas in Indonesia.

The mother, estimated to be between 25 and 30, and the child were the only orangutans the team found alive in the area surrounding a palm-oil plantation. The group said it was scouting the area after reports of mass organutan slaughter.

I need some help, please.

During the Casey A years, sometimes it would be reported that her brother was selling stuff on eBay, his ID name there and what he was selling.

How does one find out the ID of the person?

Reason I ask.

I belong to the American Legion Auxiliary. We have (had) an antique large globe like light from our Unit in the 1930-40's, about 18 inches like the top of the frosted round globe like things on top of old filling station gas pumps, trimmed in blue on the inset and the words of the American Legion Auxiliary on it. I found it in 2002 and it has been in the same place since then until the room was repainted.... it was on top of our ALA cabinet back against the wall. I had repacked it in its original box. It had a light in it and from the work of the plug it looked 30-40's. It  was from the original ALA/AL building that is now a historic landmark in our city, It sat on a table.

The room is shared with the officers of the American Legion Post which recently painted the room, well, perhaps late Oct/NOV. I have been ill so missed the last few meetings.

Tonight I went into the room for a meeting and the antique light was gone! It was in a box well marked ALA spelled out and fragile.

An officer from the AL admitted to me that he saw it in the "old" box, it was dusty, he ran it on eBay and it wasn't worth anything so the threw it away.

I have been tipped off that other items have been sold by another officer; items that belong to the organization and not to them, individually.

OK if slueths
if CA brother could be ID'd on eBay, how can I find these persons? Can zip codes be run?

eBay policy is that if you know that stolen goods were sold on eBay you go to the local police and then they contact eBay with the complaint.

I need to find the listing of the item on eBay first

I tell you, the thought ran threw me to run over him with my car tonight, but wouldn't do well in prison.

Now get this, he says it was junk! At the time he admitted this, in front of another AL officer, no less, I am looking around the room and seeing all kinds of electronic junk cluttering up the room.

Want to nail this guy in the worse way! Help please,

Not much help, but I have looked for items that "expired" on ebay, and once they are taken off, I'm not aware there's a way to pull them back up. I'm thinking that reporting it stolen and allowing the police to contact ebay may be the best way. I'm sure ebay could run the description and pull up matching items sold and further narrow it by zip code. The trick is getting the police to make the contact for you.

I am 71 and so is the man who admitted it, a former Navy officer, no less in Vietnam. Guess he thought I had just gotten off a turnip truck.

I "protected" that light for 9-10 years with it hidden there!
