Police Search for Missing Beauty Queen

Police said Saturday they weren't discarding the possibility that human trafficking played a role in the disappearance of a former Miss Brazil who hasn't contacted her family since September.

Taiza Thomsen, 24, represented Brazil at the 2003 Miss Universe pageant in Panama. The last time she spoke to her parents, she said she was in London.

"At this moment we can't rule out anything, not even the possibility she was a victim of human trafficking," police investigator Marcos David Salem told Brazilian TV.

Police began investigating the case Friday, after Thomsen's family reported her missing the previous day. Police said they had no leads.

Thomsen's family has said that in some of their conversations before she went missing, she left them with the feeling that she was being threatened. The family did not elaborate.

According to some of her friends, Thomsen had worked briefly in Belgium and there was a possibility she was still there, media reported.

Former Miss Brazil goes missing

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The parents of a former Miss Brazil made an appeal for information about their daughter, who was in Britain but hasn't spoken to them since September.

Taiza Thomsen's parents said they were seeking any information about the whereabouts of their 24-year-old daughter, who last they heard was visiting London, O Globo reported Sunday.

When Thomsen last spoke to her family, she indicated she might be in some kind of trouble or being threatened, though she did not specify what, her parents said.

A police investigator said that she might have been a victim of human trafficking and that authorities were investing the possibility.

Women from South America, particularly Brazil, are wanted in Europe and elsewhere by the sex industry, police say, and have been lured into traveling abroad by promises of legitimate work only to find themselves duped into forced prostitution with no means of returning home.

This doesn't sound good at all.  Immediately I am reminded of Shannon Marketic's case.

Missing beauty queen contacts police

February 5, 2007

SAO PAULO, Brazil -- The former Miss Brazil, who disappeared five months ago, has contacted Brazilian police from London to say she is well and does not want to be bothered, authorities said Monday.

Taiza Thomsen, 24, had not talked to her family since September, prompting her parents to request help from authorities last month. In her last conversation with her family, she said she was in London.

The Brazilian federal police said Thomsen called investigators on Saturday to say she was in England and nothing had happened to her.

''Thomsen informed that she was doing well in London and that she didn't want to be found, not even by her parents,'' the police said in a statement.

The investigators said it did not appear she was being pressured or coerced by anybody, and that they would close the case.

''She has the right to stay isolated,'' the statement said.

Authorities had been trying to find Thomsen since Jan. 25, when her parents reported she was missing. Police had said it was possible that human trafficking played a role in the disappearance.

From Sao Paolo to Soho: missing Miss Brazil is found

Wednesday, February 07, 2007

By Cahal Milmo and Silvia Castel

Taiza Thomsen told reporters while representing Brazil at the Miss World contest in 2003 that she had no time for an institution that "flaunts women and their bodies".

It is a measure of the downward turn that her life took that she had to work in a London strip club to make ends meet during a baffling six-month silence which sparked an international police hunt.

That silence ended yesterday when Ms Thomsen, 24, who last contacted her family in September, called Brazilian police from her new home in north London to say she was safe and well but had no desire to see anyone - least of all her parents.

The disappearance of the former Miss Brazil after moving 6,000 miles to Britain in April last year from the Brazilian capital, Sao Paolo, gave rise to concern that she had fallen foul of sex traffickers.

Investigators said last night they were satisfied she had not been the subject of any pressure or coercion by another individual. Sources said Ms Thomsen had severed contact with her family after an argument.

In a statement, the Federal Police in her native town of Joinville, southern Brazil, said: "Thomsen reported she was doing well in London and that she did not want to be found, not even by her parents. She has the right to stay isolated."

But while it seems Ms Thomsen did not fall foul of kidnappers, the idealism she expressed as a beauty pageant queen with the world at her feet four years ago rapidly gave way to harsh economic realities when she arrived in London as an impoverished immigrant 10 months ago.

The Independent has been told that Ms Thomsen, who was studying for a journalism degree before she left Brazil, may also have gone to ground because her visa to stay in Britain has expired.

well, at least she had the courtesy to call and say she was alive and well and didn't want to be contacted.

Lets hope it was really her and not some imposter saying that.

What was so bad between she and her parents that she doesn't want contact with them?

Who knows....

Same situation as the teen from Pa. who went missing and has only contacted her mom once or twice...

Alot of missing people are missing because they want it that way.

So sad for the people left behind.

It sounds as though it was an actual call made IMO. the article mentions her dissatisfaction with "stripping" or whatever she was doing, and not wanting to be contacted by anyone....likely recorded. Family will likely get to listen to how she doens't want to hear from them   Sad
