Police seek information on man seen with Karamjit Kaur
October 4, 2009

Reno police are reaching out to North Valley High School students in hopes they will report information about a man seen at school with missing 16-year-old student Karamjit Kaur.

Kaur's family reported to police she was last seen around 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, riding her mountain bike in front of her home in Stead.

Media attention to the case prompted several students to call Secret Witness and the detective tip line, who said they had seen Kaur at school with a Middle Eastern male, who was older than a student. The reports said he would visit with her during breaks.

Police are asking students to report any and all information they may have about the unidentified Indian man, and possibly any vehicle he was seen driving.

Kaur, who moved to Reno from India less then a year ago, lived in a strict home, and was usually supervised by her father, and younger brother. The supervision occurred anytime she was outside the home, police said.

When Kaur told her mother Wednesday evening she wanted to ride her bike because she was "hot," her father and brother had been shopping for school supplies, police said. A few minutes later, her mother became concerned and realized her daughter was not riding in front of their home. A relative who speaks English called police.

Kaur had took off on her bike wearing flip flops and pajamas, and was not believed to have brought any items with her, such as clothing or a purse. Police said she just learned how to ride the bike, and typically did not stray far from her home.

Three teen boys soon after she left her house found her bike abandoned by a busy intersection. One boy rode the bike home, and abandoned it in a culvert.

Police said Kaur has not been seen or heard from since, which is uncharacteristic.
Anyone with information, especially her classmates, are encouraged to call the tip line at 745-3521 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.

Reno police not sure if girl's disappearance was voluntary or abduction

Jaclyn O'Malley • Reno Gazette-Journal • October 4, 2009

Was 16-year-old Karamjt Kaur abducted four days ago by a predator creeping around her Stead neighborhood, or did she voluntarily leave with someone?

Reno police detectives just don't know.

They have been investigating her disappearance as an abduction since Wednesday night, when she did not return from a bike ride.

"At this point, we're not certain if this was an abduction or a runaway," said Lt. Mike Whan, who heads the Reno police robbery/homicide unit. "We treat these cases as an abduction until we get information that tells us otherwise."

Troubling is that her family has not seen or heard from her in four days. Experts say that the longer a person stays missing, the more likelihood their disappearance is related to foul play.

Kaur's relatives have told police that she was not known to leave without permission, and usually was supervised when she left the home she shares with her mother, father, younger brother and three older sisters.

Kaur is new to the country, as she and her family moved to the Reno area eight months ago to join her father. She previously attended Hug High School.

Police said they don't have any specific information about boyfriends, drug use or Internet chatting that Kaur may have been involved in. Although, some of her classmates have reported to Secret Witness that she was seen at school during breaks visiting with a Middle Eastern male that was older than a high school student. Police are still looking for more tips on that report to identify the man.

Her family reported that around 6:30 p.m., Wed., she told her mother she was "hot" and was going for a bike ride. She wore flip flops and pajamas, and was not known to have brought any items, or bags, with her. Police said her family said it was uncharacteristic for her to do that. At the time, her father and brother were not home, who usually would watch as she rode her bike up and down the block. She just learned how to ride it.

Police also said they have no information her disappearance was racially motivated, or the focus of a hate crime.

If you have any information about Kaur's whereabouts, or people she kept company with, contact the detective tip line at 745-3521, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.

Authorities mull charges for Reno girl's in-law
The Associated Press
Published: Tuesday, October 6, 2009 11:10 PDT
RENO, Nev.

An FBI spokesman in Nevada says authorities are considering state and federal charges for a 29-year-old man found with his 16-year-old sister-in-law in Indiana five days after she went missing in Reno.

FBI Special Agent Joseph Dickey said Tuesday that authorities have not taken Parvinder Singh into custody or charged him with any crimes. But they are sifting through the facts and circumstances surrounding the disappearance to see if charges are warranted.

Karamjit Kaur of Reno was found unharmed Monday with Singh in a hotel room in Merrillville, Ind.
Reno police told the Reno Gazette-Journal that Kaur had a budding romance with Singh and plotted to leave Reno with him. Authorities say he visited her at school and was identified by students and staff.
