Fate Of Casey Anthony In Jurors' Hands
Casey Anthony, 25, Could Face Death Penalty If Convicted
POSTED: Monday, July 4, 2011
UPDATED: 1:51 pm EDT July 4, 2011

Perry reminded the jurors that it is not up to the defendant to prove their innocence. He said a defendant choosing not to testify it is not an indication of guilt.

"Whatever verdict you render must be unanimous," Perry said.

Only 12 of the 17 jurors brought in from Pinellas County will participate in deliberations. Five of the jurors are alternates, but were not aware of this during the trial.

Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick ended closing arguments earlier Monday with a photo of the "Bella Vita" tattoo Casey Anthony got while Caylee was missing, and asking who benefited from Caylee's death.

Casey Anthony jury deliberations to resume in US
July 5, 2011, 3:14 a.m. CDT
Associated Press

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) — Deliberations in the Florida murder trial of Casey Anthony will resume a day after the jury failed to reach a verdict in its first six hours of discussing the case.

Tuesday marks the first full day the seven women and five men on the jury will be able to deliberate the evidence, after the prosecution concluded its rebuttal closing argument Monday afternoon in a trial which has gripped America. Judge Belvin Perry read jurors their instructions and made several points on the charges facing the 25-year-old Anthony before sending them out.

http://news.yahoo.com/jury-clears-casey-anthony-murder-charges-072938277.html

After a trial of a month and a half, the jury took less than 11 hours to find Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter and aggravated child abuse.

Tears welled in Anthony's eyes, her face reddened, her lips trembled, and she began breathing heavily as she listened to the verdict.

Many in the crowd of about 500 people outside the courthouse reacted with anger after the verdict was read, chanting, "Justice for Caylee!" One man yelled, "Baby killer!"

Given the relative speed with which the jury came back with a verdict, many court-watchers were expecting Anthony to be convicted in the killing, and they were stunned by the outcome.

Sentencing was set for Thursday. Anthony could get up to a year behind bars on each count of lying to investigators. But since she has been in jail for nearly three years already, she could walk free.

Prosecutors contended that Anthony — a single mother living with her parents — suffocated Caylee with duct tape because she wanted to be free to hit the nightclubs and spend time with her boyfriend.

Defense attorneys argued that the little girl accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool and that Anthony panicked and hid the body because of the traumatic effects of being sexually abused by her father. ::snipping2::

seething-about-casey-anthony-verdict
Jesse Grund tells Nancy Grace he's 'seething' about Casey Anthony verdict
Cindy Adams
, Crime Examiner
July 6, 2011 -

“I’m shocked and angry... I’m shocked is the best choice of words. I feel like someone who was just in a war and doesn’t know what happened,” Grund told Grace during an appearance on her HLN TV show.

“I know how close that you had become to Caylee,” said Grace. “As a matter of fact, the defense at one point was playing point the finger at you until they found what they thought to be a better target, that was George Anthony. I guess he fit into their scenario better than you did.”

She added, “For a while there, you were looking like the scapegoat with Roy Kronk. So explain to me your anger and your feelings of being essentially numb.”

Grund said, “You know numb is a great choice of words... I walk away from this case with just dissatisfaction, with every side. I’m angry tonight with the defense and their lack of tact by having a champagne toast right across the street from the courthouse. Even though they’re talking about the fact that nobody wins because Caylee is not here anymore.”

He continued, “This was never about a search for the truth. This was about... winning at all costs. That’s what this was about. And I’m angry... I am beside myself, seething over that fact... I feel like I’ve sat on the sidelines the entire time, never getting a chance to speak. People spoke for me repeatedly... this has been a frustrating experience overall based on the fact that Caylee – I still love and miss dearly – she’s never coming back. And nobody sought out the truth in this. This was all about winning. This was never about the truth.”

Next For Casey Anthony: Freedom, Book Deals, Analysts Say
By Lateef Mungin CNN
POSTED: Wednesday, July 6, 2011
UPDATED: 6:34 am EDT July 6, 2011

There will be no legal restrictions on Anthony profiting on the details of this case, cashing in on deals for movies, books or interviews, analysts say.

Because of her acquittal, so-called Son of Sam laws -- laws designed to keep criminals from earning money from their crimes -- do not apply, they say.

"Why can't she make money off of her story?" said Drew Findling, another defense lawyer. "You've seen so many cases where witnesses for the prosecution have profited from the case. Look at the O.J. Simpson case and how the prosecutor, who lost the case, wrote books and made money afterwards. So why can't Casey do it?"

HLN's Nancy Grace, who has covered the Anthony case extensively since Caylee was reported missing, did not mince words about Anthony's possible plans.

"Now tot mom finally has the beautiful life that she envisioned. She's free," Grace said on her show Tuesday. "She will walk free as early as this Thursday. She's set up to make very likely over a million dollars off the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony."

The seven-week long trial ended with 11 hours of deliberation when an Orange County, Florida, jury found Anthony not guilty of the most serious charges.

"This jury ignored the scientific evidence," said New York lawyer Susan Moss. "Apparently, they found the only 12 people who still think the world is flat."

But Andrea Lyon, who once represented Anthony, said the evidence wasn't there.

"That prosecution overreached," Lyon said "AC 360." "They used junk science. They attempted to overwhelm the lack of evidence with character assassination. They did not have evidence of a homicide." ::snipping2::

Other family members are also talking about the verdict.

Casey's uncle in Ohio said he was shocked by the jury's decision, but now his focus has quickly turned to the well being of his brother-in-law.

“George is the one that was harmed the most and I, you know, and I just, I want to see that George is vindicated through this, that is my feeling,” said Chuck Eddy.

Eddy went on to say that if he could sit down with Casey, he would urge her to talk about what really happened to Caylee.

Casey's aunt had some harsh words for the jury after the not guilty verdict. She spoke with Nancy Grace by phone on Tuesday night.

“I'm appalled, and now I’m angry and I say shame on this jury that they are either not too bright or just plain lazy.”

Because the case got so much media attention in Orlando, jurors were brought in from the Tampa Bay area and sequestered for the entire trial, during which they listened to more than 33 days of testimony and looked at 400 pieces of evidence. Casey did not take the stand.

Now the world is watching and waiting to hear from Casey herself once she's released from jail.

“What someone like Casey, anything will do, is that she'll become a celebrity. She will sell her story to the television networks. She will sell her story to Hollywood…book deals. Her identity will become her celebrity and she'll live comfortably for the rest of her life,” said WFTV’s legal expert Bill Sheaffer.

The verdict could divide people for many years to come, just as the O.J. Simpson case in the mid-1990s did, with some believing Casey got away with murder. ::snipping2::

Casey Anthony Verdict: Alternate Juror Calls Her 'Good Mother'
By ASHLEIGH BANFIELD (@ABCAshleigh) , KEVIN DOLAK and JESSICA HOPPER
July 6, 2011
Video at link.
An alternate juror in the Casey Anthony trial says that he believes Casey Anthony is a good mother and that 2-year-old Caylee's death was just a horrific accident.

In a bombshell verdict, 12 jurors found Casey Anthony not guilty of the murder of her daughter. She was found guilty of four counts of lying to law enforcement and could be released from jail as early as Thursday.

Mark Lippman, lawyer for Casey Anthony's parents, said on "Good Morning America" today that George and Cindy Anthony were shocked by the verdict, not because they believe Casey Anthony is guilty, but because they thought the state did a fantastic job presenting their case. George and Cindy Anthony have not met with their daughter since her trial began, but they hope to meet with her and to one day get the truth about what happened to Caylee.

Prosecutor in Casey Anthony case makes A-K family proud

Don Drane of Allegheny Township was surprised by the verdict in the Casey Anthony case but proud of the lead prosecutor in the Florida case.

That would be his daughter, Linda Drane Burdick, the assistant state attorney, who argued the case against the 25-year-old Anthony, accused of murdering her daughter, Caylee, 2.

Drane was not surprised that his daughter, a 1982 graduate of Burrell High School, was chosen to lead the prosecution.

"I wasn't the least bit surprised," he said. "She's got 20 years of experience in child abuse and child sex cases and worked in homicide cases."

"She's tried numerous high profile cases over the years, Drane said. "This isn't her first rodeo."

Cindy Drane, an Oakmont resident, exchanged e-mails with her older sister a short time after the verdict was rendered.

"She said she's OK and she'll call me later," Cindy Drane said. "She said she thought she did the best she could. She just wanted to do her job. You just can't predict what a jury is going to do."

Drane said her sister is a passionate advocate for victims of often-nightmarish crimes.

She said Linda told her that the Florida State Attorney General's office has not permitted her to talk to the media, even after the verdict.

"Geraldo Rivera came up to her and introduced himself, but she told him she couldn't talk to him," Cindy Drane said. ::snipping2::
