Hair showing decomposition similar to Caylee's, FBI tech testifies
Posted: 12:57 PM ET

(CNN) - A hair sample that shows evidence decomposition was similar to that of Casey Anthony's 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, an FBI evidence analyst testified at the Orlando woman's trial Saturday.

Investigators found hair in the trunk of Casey Anthony's car that prosecutors plan to claim could have come only from a decomposing body.

A crime scene investigator, the operator of a towing company and members of Anthony's family all say they smelled a bad odor coming from Anthony's car after it was found abandoned in a parking lot on June 27, 2008 and towed four days later.

Caylee was last reported seen by her family on June 16, 2008, but no one alerted police until July 15, 2008 - after Anthony's mother tracked Casey Anthony down and demanded answers.

Anthony, 25, is charged with seven counts in Caylee's death, including first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and misleading police. If convicted, she could face the death penalty.

Prosecutors say she used chloroform on her daughter and then put duct tape on her nose and mouth to suffocate her. She has pleaded not guilty and has denied harming her daughter or having anything to do with the girl's disappearance.

The Orlando woman's attorneys argue Caylee drowned in the family pool on June 16, 2008. They say Anthony and her father panicked and covered up the death. George Anthony denied the claim during his testimony last week.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- In groundbreaking yet technical testimony, an FBI analyst testified Saturday in Casey Anthony's murder trial that a hair sample found in Casey's trunk shows signs of decomposition.

Investigators found hair in the trunk of Anthony's car. Prosecutors claim the hair could only have come from a decomposing body.

Post-mortem root banding, the scientific name for the phenomenon, has never been used as evidence in a Florida criminal trial until the Anthony case.

It was a good day for Jose Baez, defense lawyer in the Casey Anthony trial, who succeeded in casting doubt on the state's forensic evidence.

Everyone has an opinion about the Casey Anthony murder trial. So-called experts have weighed in on everything from the body language, the voice inflection, and the wardrobe choices of the young woman accused of murdering her daughter, two-year old Caylee Anthony in 2008. Today, the state took a different tacit, which was vigorously contested by the defense.

Hair in Casey Anthony's trunk may be Caylee's: expert

By Barbara Liston  – 2 hrs 23 mins ago

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) – A single 9-inch-long brown hair found in the car trunk of accused child killer Casey Anthony could have been ripped from the dead body of her 2-year old daughter, an FBI expert testified on Saturday.

The hair evidence is among the most contentious in Casey's first-degree murder trial on charges that she killed Caylee Anthony on June 16, 2008, and dumped her body in woods near the Anthony home. Defense lawyer Jose Baez contends the science behind some of the hair analysis is new and unreliable.

Caylee was first reported missing July 15, 2008, by her grandmother Cindy Anthony after finding Casey's car at an impound lot. Cindy and a series of witnesses have testified that the car was permeated by a strong stench that they likened to the odor of a body.

Casey told detectives Caylee was kidnapped by a nanny. But after a nationwide search, Caylee's skeletal remains were found in December 2008 in woods a 10-minute walk from the Anthony family home.

Baez has told jurors Caylee drowned accidentally in the backyard pool but that her death went unreported.

Karen Korsberg Lowe, who specializes in microscopic examination of hair samples at the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, testified she found "root-banding" on the hair, something she said scientists have never seen other than on hairs from decomposing bodies.

"It has darkened bands at the root portion ... . This is consistent with apparent decomposition," Lowe testified.

Lowe also testified the hair appeared under a microscope to be similar to one recovered from Caylee's hairbrush. ::snipping2::

But a recording has now surfaced in which Casey herself disputes that testimony.

"When Melich read me my rights in front of the other two detectives, [he] flat out said, 'I'm going to hold you as long as I can. There's going to be no bond, period,'" said Casey during a taped jailhouse conversation with her brother, Lee.

Dr. Michael Baden appears to say “…they found chloroform in the baby’s hair” when asked about testing Caylee Anthony’s hair for the presence of chemical substances.

This is relevant because Dr. Baden’s wife, Linda Kenney-Baden is part of Casey Anthony’s defense team, and is privy to such information.
During the investigation, Anthony’s car was searched and traces of chloroform, a stain, and some of Caylee’s decaying hairs were found in the trunk.
See Dr. Baden’s statement below:

ORLANDO --

Testimony is scheduled to resume tomorrow in Orlando in the first degree murder trial of Casey Anthony.

Prosecution experts are expected to take the stand to present more scientific evidence.

Saturday, Day 10 of the trial, was a “hairy” day for the defense.

FBI forensic scientist Karen Lowe took to the stand Saturday and testified about the microscopic details of hair.

The defense was ready to challenge this science along with the air samples, which were both presented by the prosecution Saturday.

Experts: Casey Anthony Defense Team Faces Uphill Battle

Published June 05, 2011

| Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Legal experts say prosecutors' meticulous murder case against Casey Anthony so far, along with the woman's sensational claims that her father covered up her daughter's death after the 2-year-old drowned, could make it difficult to avoid a conviction.

Saturday ended the second week of testimony in Anthony's murder trial, and prosecutors say it also marks roughly the halfway point of their case. Prosecutors are trying to prove that the single mother, then 22, suffocated her daughter Caylee by placing duct tape over the girl's mouth and then dumped her body in the woods near her parents' home.

It's a high-profile case that has demanded a methodical approach from a prosecution team with more than 70 years of combined experience -- in part because, if convicted, Anthony could become only the fourth woman added to Florida's current roster of 397 death row inmates.

Casey Anthony trial: Legal experts question defense attorney Jose Baez's handling of case

By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

6:52 p.m. EDT, June 5, 2011

Defense attorney Jose Baez rocked the criminal-defense world — not to mention Orlando's legal community — when he told jurors in Casey Anthony's murder trial that the death of his client's daughter was not a murder but due to an accidental drowning.

He also blamed Anthony's lying on her family's deep dysfunction and the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father.

It was a spectacular way to start a trial. But since then, criminal-defense experts in Florida and the country have called Baez's opening statement in court a high-risk and dangerous move. After all, his client faces a possible death sentence if convicted of killing her young daughter.

Along with a series of courtroom bumblings played out on live TV, Baez's performance during the first two weeks of testimony has some observers wondering whether he knows what he is doing.

"The defense's handling of this case is not representative in any way of the standard I hold my profession to," says Mark NeJame, longtime Orlando attorney and legal analyst for WKMG-Channel 6. NeJame at one time represented Casey Anthony's parents, George and Cindy.

Casey Anthony trial: Forensic, science experts expected to testify today
By Walter Pacheco, Orlando Sentinel
7:14 a.m. EDT, June 6, 2011
Testimony involving evidence such as air and hair samples will continue at 9 a.m. in the first-degree murder case against accused child killer Casey Anthony.

A single strand of hair recovered from the trunk of Casey Anthony's car showed signs of apparent human decomposition, an FBI hair-and-fiber examiner told jurors at her murder trial Saturday.

Karen Korsberg Lowe, the FBI expert, said the hair sample is similar to hair found on a brush belonging to Anthony's daughter, Caylee Marie, but she could not definitively say it belonged to the 2-year-old who died almost three years ago.

Other forensic and science experts are expected to testify today.

Saturday's second witness, Mike Vincent, an assistant supervisor with the Orange County Sheriff's Office crime-scene unit, said he found no blood in the trunk of the car. He explained how he collected various other pieces of evidence in 2008.

Vincent discussed how he used a pump apparatus with test tubes to collect air samples from inside the car trunk. A stain in the vehicle also was collected, Vincent said.

Scientists associated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory are expected to testify later in the trial about the findings from the air samples.

Casey On Trial: Air Tests Expert Testifies On Day 22
Posted: 5:35 am EDT June 6, 2011Updated: 12:12 pm EDT June 6, 2011

Arpad Vass, a researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was the first witness called on Monday on day 22 of Casey's trial. Vass has pioneered a novel technique for detecting human decomposition from air samples.

Prosecutors trying to prove that Casey suffocated Caylee with duct tape in 2008 contend that traces of decomposition were found in her car.

The controversial air tests have never been introduced as evidence in a case and it’s from a device called a gas chromatagraph, which is part of a pile of high-tech crime scene evidence the state is now presenting.

Experts have already testified that a hair consistent with Caylee’s was found in a condition that only exists after a person has died and their body has begun decomposing.

The state is also expected to call its computer expert to testify about computer searches from Casey’s home, including the words chloroform and neck breaking. Those Google searches happened in the months before Caylee disappeared.

The state is expected to call witnesses through June 17, a day after the third anniversary of Caylee's death.

Casey has pleaded not guilty. Her defense attorney says the toddler drowned in her grandparents' swimming pool.

If convicted, the 25-year-old Casey could be sentenced to death.

Chloroform Levels In Casey's Car Leave Experts "Shocked"
Posted: 5:35 am EDT June 6, 2011Updated: 4:42 pm EDT June 6, 2011
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory was the first witness called on day 22 of Casey Anthony's murder trial on Monday.

Arpad Vass testified that he can detect human decomposition in the air from Casey's trunk. It's the first time a jury has heard testimony about controversial air tests. The evidence has never been used in a criminal case before.

Prosecutors say the tests prove Caylee's body was in the trunk of Casey's car. Vass analyzed containers of air that came from portions of the trunk material and compared it to similar samples from another car.

"I jumped back a foot or two," Vass said of the odor he observed when opening a can containing an air sample from Casey's Pontiac. "It was shocking that strong of an odor could be in that little can."
