prosecution opening statement
It is time to tell the story of a little girl named Caylee,” Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick said Tuesday morning as she launched a two-hour opening statement at Casey Anthony’s trial for her 2-year-old daughter’s murder.

Burdick called Caylee Marie Anthony’s home life with her “doting grandparents” before her June 16, 2008 disappearance “every little girl’s dream.” However, she quickly shifted her focus to what happened between the last photo grandmother Cindy Anthony took of Caylee on June 15 and the first photo taken of her remains on December 11.

Casey Anthony cried at several points during Burdick’s presentation, such as when she described Caylee’s remains, and she shook her head as Burdick recounted some of the lies she allegedly told her family and investigators. ::snipping2::

Baez Says Caylee Drowned In Pool; George Takes Stand

 Posted: 5:18 am EDT May 24, 2011
 Updated: 5:24 pm EDT May 24, 2011
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- George Anthony was the prosecution's first witness on day 12 of Casey Anthony's murder trial on Tuesday. Casey is accused of killing her daughter, 2-year-old Caylee, and dumping the body in the woods near her parent's home on Suburban Drive.

Circuit Judge Belvin Perry called the court to order around 9:00am on Tuesday.

Casey walked into the Orange County courtroom at 8:50am on Tuesday, wearing a white, long-sleeved shirt and she had her hair pulled back into a ponytail. Her parents, Cindy and George Anthony were present.

Casey cried throughout the opening statements from both the prosecution and the defense on Tuesday. However, Casey was most emotional after lunch when her attorney, Jose Baez, stated to the jurors that Caylee Anthony was never missing, but drowned in her family's pool.

"How in the world can a mother wait 30 days to report a child missing? It's insane. Something's just not right about that. The answer is relatively simple. She never was missing. Caylee Anthony died on June 16, 2008, when she drowned in her family's swimming pool," Baez stated. ::snipping2::

George Anthony Denies Caylee Drowned, Molesting Daughter
Defense Says Caylee Drowned In Family Pool

 POSTED: Tuesday, May 24, 2011
 UPDATED: 6:57 pm EDT May 24, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- George Anthony, the father of Casey Anthony and the state's first witness in her first-degree murder trial, on Tuesday denied major defense theories introduced by attorney Jose Baez during opening statements.
Less than an hour into George Anthony's questioning, the state asked him if he sexually abused Casey Anthony. He said no. He then denied knowing that Caylee drowned in the family pool on June 16, 2008.

George Anthony testified that he would have done anything to save his granddaughter. He said he had nothing to do with the disposal of Caylee's body.

The state began by asking George Anthony about his history, including how he met his wife and his history with working in law enforcement.

When the state completed its questioning of George Anthony, Baez began cross examination. ::snipping2::

ORLANDO --

The Casey Anthony trial entered Day 2 Wednesday, with the prosecution calling more witnesses to the stand to support their case of murder against the 25-year-old mother.

Will more bombshell testimony come be brought to light?

 Judge wants list of witnesses

Before Judge Belvin Perry brought in the jury Wednesday, he asked the state of Florida to hand over a list of its next 40 witnesses, so the defense could spent less time preparing their cross-

Casey Anthony trial: Ex-boyfriend, friends, neighbor who loaned shovel testify
Judge denies defense attorney Jose Baez's question to former boyfriend about "secrets" Anthony told him.
May 25, 2011|By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

Casey Anthony's ex-boyfriend took the stand Wednesday and told jurors the young woman showed no outward signs of depression or sadness in the days after her daughter's disappearance in mid-June 2008.

Anthony Lazzaro's testimony matched that of other members of her partying social network in Orlando who also recalled Anthony's behavior during that period.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Tensions ran high as George Anthony was brought back to the stand on day 14 of Casey Anthony's murder trial Thursday. There were several tense exchanges between Casey's lead attorney, Jose Baez, and George Anthony.

Casey entered the courtroom around 8:55am, wearing a light blue striped button-down shirt and grey pants. She had her hair pulled back in a tight bun.

Jose Baez began questioning Tony Lazzaro, Casey's ex-boyfriend, just after the court was called to order at 9:00am on Thursday.

Tony Lazarro testified under questioning from Anthony's defense attorney that she taught Caylee how to swim and regularly displayed affection for her daughter. ::snipping2::

Cops, on Caylee tips: How did we miss this?
December 19, 2008|By Bianca Prieto, Sarah Lundy and Amy L. Edwards, Sentinel Staff Writers

Could the search for Caylee Marie have ended months ago?

An Orange County utilities worker tried three times in August to alert law enforcement of a strange gray bag on the side of Suburban Drive near the home of missing Caylee Marie Anthony, a sheriff's official said Thursday.

Three times, deputy sheriffs checked the tips, with no results. When curiosity led the same utility worker back to the same spot last week, he found a plastic bag containing the remains of a small child. ::snipping2::

Casey Anthony trial: 'Oh, my God
I'm such a good liar,' Casey told witness
Ex-boyfriend Ricardo Morales sold Casey photos for $4K.
May 26, 2011|By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

Casey Anthony's ex-boyfriend raised suspicions about the young woman's family life Thursday, testifying that she told him her brother had molested her and her father had hit her.

Tony Lazzaro told the judge and attorneys involved in the first-degree murder trial that Casey Anthony had confided that her brother Lee tried to "feel her up."

"Lee Anthony tried to sexually abuse her," said Lazzaro, adding that he was shocked by her admission.

Then he described Anthony's allegations of abuse at the hand of her father, George Anthony.

"Hitting, that's all I can remember," Lazzaro said. "I took it as discipline."

Casey Anthony Gloated About Lying, Was Sleeping With Two Men
By JESSICA HOPPER and ASHLEIGH BANFIELD (@ABCAshleigh)
ORLANDO, Fla. May 26, 2011

Casey Anthony was practically living with a new boyfriend and slept with an old boyfriend in the days before her daughter Caylee disappeared, according to testimony in her Orlando murder trial today.

In a day of testimony that appeared to get at the character of Casey Anthony, a woman who spent a July 4 weekend with her recalled the defendant making up an excuse to cancel an appointment with friends and then bragging, "Oh my God, I'm such a good liar."Casey Anthony Gloated About Lying, Was Sleeping With Two Men

Caylee Anthony case: Magpie reports on trial 05/26/11
Posted on May 26, 2011 by Valhall

Let the tears begin. Which they did immediately with Casey as she looks at Tony L. as he talks about one of the only 2 or 3 times he saw Caylee. She looks at him as if he is Caylee’s father describing her count in Spanish. It is so hard
to understand casey and her defense strategy. They’ve fought to exclude any
mention of her sex life, promiscuity etc. yet that is a class book trait of an incest survivor. Of course that is the problem with diagnosing abuse (or defending/prosecuting it). The symptoms can range from being sexually overt and promiscuous or refusing to allow even the barest of touch. We can develop patterns and typical behaviors but no two survivors are the same and their coping manifestations can go either direction.

For the first time there are 6 extra large boxes, 5 medium boxes, 6 small boxes,
3 large bags and a file box of evidence on the court floor. YIKES! Are we going
to have to sift thru all of that?

Tony L. never makes any real effort to look at casey. He is the 1st witness
though that she has paid any real attention to. How much fun was it when Tony
gives Baez those little jabs? I.E. when Baez says “You would talk on the phone
 even when you weren’t together. Wouldn’t you” and Tony’s like…Duh? That’s when
we would talk on the phone (under his breath) you idiot”. ::snipping2::

Casey Trial Day 15, Judge To Address State's Motion
Posted: 5:38 am EDT May 27, 2011Updated: 6:34 am EDT May 27, 2011
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Day 15 of Casey Anthony's murder trial will begin Friday, and so far, the prosecution has brought a parade of Casey's friends and ex-boyfriends to the stand to talk about how she acted during the 31 days after Caylee was last seen.
Attorneys will head to work earlier to begin court at 8:30am, where Chief Judge Belvin Perry will hear a motion by the prosecution that could lead to fewer sidebars and pauses in witness testimony.

Prosecutors are concerned that the defense is asking too many questioned about hearsay evidence, which is what others say Casey told them about her life. Now the state wants that testimony to be heard without the jury first. But the state said the defense’s questions are leading to a flood of objections. They want that problem handled first thing Friday morning. ::snipping2::

Casey Anthony Trial: State to call more witnesses on Day 4
José Baez asked for mistrial again; Judge Belvin Perry denied it.

State prosecutors will continue to call witnesses today and build its first-degree murder case against Casey Anthony as the trial moves into its fourth day.

Prosecutors called four witnesses ranging from the fiancé of Lee Anthony, the defendant's brother, to the owner of the towing agency that towed Casey Anthony's car to a local AMSCOT parking lot.

The owner of the towing agency, Simon Birch said the smell of human decomposition emanated from Casey Anthony's car.

"Instant flash in my mind was, 'Woah, I know what that smell is,'" Birch said. ::snipping2::

Day 4: Towing manager smelled death around Casey Anthony's car

ORLANDO --

For the first time, a witness in the Casey Anthony murder trial said he notice a "smell of death" coming from Casey Anthony's car.

On Friday, Simon Birch, the former manager of the towing company that removed the Anthonys' Pontiac Sunfire from an Amscot parking lot in late June 2008, told prosecutors he noticed a strong odor around the car after it had been sitting in his towing yard for days.

"Whew, I know what that smells like," Birch recalled thinking. ::snipping2::

Casey Anthony Trial: Witness Says Car Smelled Like Human Decomposition

By ASHLEIGH BANFIELD (@ABCAshleigh) and JESSICA HOPPER
ORLANDO, Fla. May 27, 2011

The supervisor of the tow truck company that removed Casey Anthony's abandoned car while her daughter, Caylee, was missing testified today that the car smelled like a dead body had been in it.

Simon Birch, the operations manager for Johnsons Wrecker Service during the summer of 2008, said that Anthony's white Pontiac Sunfire had been on the tow yard's lot for three days when he examined the car's exterior in early July.

"I put my hand up to the glass to shield the sun and look through the windows. At that point, I did notice a fairly strong odor emanating from the vehicle," Birch said in the Orlando, Fla., murder trial. "The instant flash in my mind was, woah, I know what that smells like." ::snipping2::

Casey Anthony Trial, Day 4: The Courting of George Anthony
May 27, 2011

“Show me a little respect and I’ll show you a little, too.”
 - George Anthony on the witness stand, May 26, 2011, to defense attorney Jose Baez

ORLANDO, Fla. -- It’s a dirty, dirty job, but somebody has to do it — or do they?  Murder defendant, Casey Anthony’s father, George endured a grilling to the point of harassment on the witness stand for much of day three during the death penalty trial of  Florida vs. Casey Anthony.  What so angered the defendant’s father?

The Smiling Inquisitor

At times smiling and appearing friendly, a crocodilian Jose Baez seemed more predator than sworn officer of the court.  Although George’s own lawyer and friend, Mark Lippman, had prepared his client for the merciless questioning anticipated, the defendant’s father found himself on the defensive most of the time.

It was merely the third day in the death penalty trial of a young woman who reportedly lied to too many, seemingly had many boyfriends and often, according to a considerable folio of state’s evidence photographs, had one too many drinks.  As the long confrontation evolved, George Anthony’s anger coursed from his reddening complexion and could be traced, muscle by muscle, across his face.  In one of many courtroom moves to distance, even acquit his client of all her alleged transgressions, Baez pushed George to the edge of composure, bullying the defendant’s father and victim’s  grandfather to assert himself, to somehow get out from under Baez’s vicious cross-examinat

Casey Anthony trial resumes after testimony on smell of human decay
On Friday, Anthony's father and a tow company manager testified that Anthony's car reeked of the unmistakable odor of a decomposing body.

George Anthony said the odor was so powerful he could not drive it home from the impound lot where it had been towed without rolling down the windows, he said.

"I did worry for my daughter and granddaughter," George Anthony testified. "I didn't want to believe what I was smelling."

Court prepares for Saturday session in Case Against Casey
By Amanda Evans , Reporter
Last Updated: Saturday, May 28, 2011 6:04 AM
It is day 5 of testimony today in the Case Against Casey.

Lawyers, the judge, and jury are all working a half day today and hearing more testimony in the case after more fireworks in court Friday.
Prosecutors wanted to introduce a sexually charged computer chat between Casey and her boyfriend, Tony Lazzaro.

The state says the messages showed Casey considered her daughter Caylee to be a burden, but the judge denied that request. ::snipping2::

Will IMs make it into evidence?

When court ended Friday, prosecutors were trying to introduce a sexually charged online chat between Casey and her then-boyfriend, Tony Lazzaro.

State prosecutors said the instant messages showed Casey considered her daughter, Caylee, to be a burden, keeping her from doing what she wanted.

But Judge Perry denied their request, saying the next logical question in that case would be "Why didn't Casey kill her parents?"

Lazzaro will likely return to the stand first thing Saturday morning.
