ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's murder trial was unexpectedly recessed only 45 minutes after it was supposed to start. Saturday marked day 39, including jury selection, of her trial.

Day 28 of the Casey Anthony murder trial ended with no witness testimony.

Judge Belvin Perry announced around 9:45 a.m. that a legal matter separate from the issues discussed earlier in the morning forced him to recess for the day.
 


On Friday, Baez grilled lead detective Yuri Melich and accused him of not looking into the possibility of other suspects.

As court concluded on Friday, Baez accused Ashton of prosecutorial misconduct and asked for a mistrial.

Baez accused Ashton of calling defense witness Robert Rodriguez's supervisor at the Department of Defense, prompting Rodriguez to be told he would lose his job if he testified. Ashton said Rodriguez's supervisor contacted him, and both sides agreed to let Rodriguez go home.

Earlier Friday, Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, testified about Caylee's use of the Anthony family pool. The defense said in opening statements that Caylee drowned in the pool on June 16, 2008.

Anthony, 25, is charged with first-degree murder in Caylee's death. If convicted, she could face the death penalty. ::snipping2::

Casey Anthony trial delayed by unexplained "legal issue"

(Reuters) - The Saturday session of Casey Anthony's first-degree murder trial was scuttled by an unspecified "legal issue" announced by Judge Belvin Perry.

The delay could push back the end of the trial in which Anthony is accused of smothering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee on June 16, 2008 and hiding the body in the woods while claiming the little girl had been kidnapped by a nanny.

Asked to identify the legal issue which delayed the trial, neither defense lawyer Cheney Mason nor prosecutor Jeff Ashton would comment.

"I can't tell ya," Ashton said. Mason said nothing.

At the 9 a.m. trial starting time, the lawyers and Perry disappeared into a side room to talk in private. They emerged 40 minutes later for Perry to make the announcement to spectators and then to the jury in its holding room. ::snipping2::

José Baez: Think what you may about Casey Anthony's guilt or innocence, but it has been painful watching her lawyer get scolded like a schoolchild in open court so often over what seem like basic oversights. We keep waiting to hear Baez tell Circuit Judge Belvin Perry, "The dog ate my expert witness' report." His cringe-worthy missteps are slowing down this already lengthy and expensive (for taxpayers) trial.

Dr. Daniel Tressler examined Anthony late Saturday morning, Perry said. Dr. Harry McLaren, from Quincy, Florida, examined Anthony Saturday evening and Sunday and Dr. Ryan Hall examined Anthony Sunday.

After reviewing the experts' reports, Perry said that Anthony was competent to stand trial.

The experts' reports will be sealed, but the defense's motion and the judge's order appointing experts will be filed.

Also Monday morning, defense attorney Ann Finnel filed a new motion for mistrial. Read more here.

Casey Anthony's Lawyers Call For Mistrial, Ask Court To Reconsider Death Penalty

Casey Anthony's defense team filed a motion Monday asking the court to reconsider the death penalty, a direct response to a recent Florida court ruling in which a Miami federal court judge found the death penalty unconstitutional.

Monday's motion argues that the death penalty would be "in violation of the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution and ... the Florida Constitution."

The motion cites the June 20 decision by U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez to grant a new sentencing hearing to a convicted killer. In making his decision, Martinez found that the way the death penalty is handed down in Florida is unconstitutional because juries, unlike judges, are not required to explain what aggravating factor or factors led them to justify execution.

Martinez's ruling does not strike down Florida's capital punishment law, but it is proving to be a thorn in the side for lawmakers. Criminal justice experts have also voiced concerns that the decision will result in a flurry of appeals by the recently convicted, the Miami Herald reported. ::snipping2::

Testimony centered on a defense chemist Dr. Kenneth Furton, who testified that the smell in Anthony's trunk could have come from trash in the car and cleaning products like bleach could explain the chloroform findings. ::snipping2::

(CNN) -- The meter reader who discovered Caylee Anthony's remains could testify Tuesday as a defense witness in the murder trial of her mother Casey, his attorney said.

Roy Kronk has been ordered to report to court at the start of the day, according to lawyer David Evans.

In his opening statement, Casey Anthony's attorney Jose Baez pointed the finger of responsibility at Kronk, who discovered Caylee's body on December 11, 2008, according to a sheriff's detective.

According to the defense, Kronk actually discovered the remains months earlier, then manipulated them for his own selfish goals. Baez called Kronk "a morally bankrupt person who took Caylee's body and hid it ... he thought he had a lottery ticket. ... He can't be ignored in this."

Evans denied the accusations made by Baez.

Casey Anthony trial: After long day and variety of witnesses, defense to continue presenting case today

After calling an array of witnesses in what ended up being a nearly 11-hour workday Monday, Casey Anthony's defense team will continue presenting its case this morning.

It's unclear who the defense will call, but meter reader Roy Kronk, credited with discovering the body of Anthony's toddler daughter, may be called to testify today.

On Monday, the defense team called Sheriff's Office detectives, two private investigators who worked for the Anthony family, and a decomposition expert.

The defense team on Monday also filed a motion asking Chief Judge Belvin Perry to declare a mistrial, citing a recent federal court ruling on a South Florida case that said the state's death penalty statute is unconstitutional.

The defense wants Perry to hold a hearing on the issue, order the prosecution to file a memorandum of law on the issue and protect Anthony's due-process rights by declaring the statute unconstitutional. ::snipping2::

Tuesday could bring one of the most highly anticipated witnesses to the stand. Roy Kronk was working as an Orange County meter reader when he discovered Calyee's remains along Suburban Drive in December 2008.

Kronk's attorney told WFTV late Monday night that his client was told to be at the courthouse on Tuesday, and ready to testify. Kronk is to report to court at 8:30 a.m. He could be the first witness, after the defense spent a long day Monday, setting up his testimony with two private investigators.
