Unfortunately, I think it is not just on the web that this happens.  Perhaps the anonymity the web affords makes these men bolder and more apt to say things they would not in person but I do think the sentiment is prevalent in a good segment of the population in all aspects.

I wonder why that is.  Why do so many males just plain hate women?  Odd reaction if you ask me.  We all start out as females.  Maybe its that odd chromosome they have.  

On the other hand, I also know some males who absolutely adore women and even a few who like them possibly too much.  Takes all kinds I guess but this irrational hatred of women is a real factor.  We see it in the Muslim culture very clearly and can see what it becomes if left unchecked.
