Lauren Spierer, a 20-year-old Indiana University student from Westchester County, disappeared after a night out with friends on June 3. Over the last seven weeks, volunteers helped organize massive searches for the aspiring fashion major, tens of thousands of individuals followed the case on social media and strangers across the nation demonstrated an outpouring of support for Lauren’s devastated, yet determined family. To date, police still do not know what happened to Lauren.

Today marks the 50th day of her disappearance.

Lauren’s heartbroken mother, Charlene, released the following letter through the Twitter account @NewsonLaurenS. Below is the unedited letter.

Spierer's Mom: 'Cruel, Heartless Element' Lurks
POSTED: 8:33 am EDT July 22, 2011
UPDATED: 12:27 pm EDT July 22, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A source has stepped forward to contradict a story from one of the last people to see Lauren Spierer, a missing Indiana University student, on the morning of her disappearance.

Attorney Carl Salzmann, who represents Corey Rossman, said Spierer helped his client walk home on the morning of June 3 after he was punched in the face and suffered memory loss.

 ::snipping2::

A source told 6News' Stacia Matthews that video from the evening shows she would have been too incapacitated to help someone else walk home because she could barely stand on her own.

"She was really drunk. She stumbled out of the elevator, slammed against this wall and one of the guys carried her out of Smallwood (Plaza.) "

Police haven't publicized the contents of the video, saying only that it shows Spierer and an acquaintance entering Smallwood Plaza about 2:30 a.m. and leaving about 15 minutes later.

"We're limited to what we're going to talk about," said Bloomington police Capt. Joe Qualters. "We have those guidelines, and we're not going to stray from those."

Lauren's story was featured at the beginning of this episode of Vanished with Beth Holloway:

Episode 9 (Desir/Smart)
Season 1: Episode 9 (Desir/Smart)): Original air date: 7/18/11. Set in Omakalee, FL and San Louis Obispo, CA. Beth meets with one family desperately searching for their special needs child, and another family trying to find a daughter who disappeared more than 15 years ago.

I hope Lauren is found safe, and soon.

Mother of Missing Indiana University Student Lauren Spierer Blogs of 'Evil, Cruel' Element

Published July 24, 2011

| FoxNews.com

The mother of an Indiana University student missing for 50 days says she can't understand the lack of compassion from the people who know what happened to her daughter but haven't come forward, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Lauren Spierer, 20, was last seen early June 3 walking alone to her apartment after a night out with friends.

The search for her gained much public attention in the first month after her disappearance, but Bloomington police have since said little about the investigation.

Charlene Spierer posted a letter Friday on a blog dedicated to the search. She wrote that she's learned there is "an evil, a cruel, heartless element" that cares more about themselves than her daughter's life.

She also said that she will continue searching until Lauren is found and can be taken back home to Greenburgh, N.Y.

Smallwood seeks new image with less focus on partying
Safety has always been top concern at 700-student downtown apartment complex

By the numbers

From the start of 2008 to June 27, 2011, Bloomington police have been called to Smallwood Plaza 439 times, according to data provided by the Bloomington Police Department and analyzed by The Herald-Times. Some of these police calls for service may have happened on the street or sidewalk outside of the building, and may not be directly related to the building itself, the Bloomington police records department noted on the raw data.

Almost 11 percent (10.93 percent) of those 439 police calls to Smallwood resulted in arrests. Those 48 arrests include 10 in connection with alcohol violations, three in domestic disputes, another two for fighting and 11 in connection with trespassing.

 ::snipping2::

Advertising changes

Since the disappearance of Spierer, Smallwood’s advertising campaigns aimed at college students have raised some eyebrows and drawn public scrutiny.

Some of those print and radio ads — some of which had been used since Smallwood’s opening in 2004, Reno said — were laced with sexual innuendo and gave winks to the hard-partying lifestyle in light of Smallwood’s convenient location to downtown Bloomington’s bars and restaurants.

 ::snipping2::

Reno confirmed that the owners of Smallwood — John and Kara Jacobs — have assisted the Spierers, who are from Scarsdale, N.Y., with an apartment and other accommodations at one of their many properties. The Spierers have vowed to stay in Bloomington until they can bring their daughter home.

Wow!  That is really nice of the owners of Smallwood!  A lot more people should take note of that gesture.  Not many families of  the missing get an opportunity to go stay where their child has gone missing and wish they could.

He says he got punched in the face and she helped him make it home, according to his lawyer Carl Salzmann. But Corey Rossman's story about missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer doesn't hold water a source told a news reporter for the Indy Channel's 6News.

Bloomington woman says man strangled her
July 26, 2011

Bloomington, Ind.—

A Bloomington woman says she was followed, attacked, and strangled by a stranger just six blocks away from where Lauren Spierer was last spotted.

The Indiana Daily Student reports the 34 year old woman was walking to a convenience store near 17th and Woodburn when she felt someone was following her. She tried to get help by knocking on the door of a nearby home, but no one answered. She said the man came up from behind and strangled her before leaving.

A witness saw the attack and called police. Police say the woman was suffering from scratches on her shoulders and back and abrasions on her elbows and knees.

Lauren Spierer disappearance: Indiana motorcycle ride to bring attention to search for missing student

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — They have taken "Laps for Lauren" and have had "Lunch for Lauren." On Saturday, people wanting to draw attention to the search for Indiana University student Lauren Spierer will participate in the "Lauren Spierer Awareness Ride."

Motorcycle enthusiasts, among them the missing student's uncle, David Spierer of New York City, will participate in the 45-mile ride, which will start and end in Bloomington.

As many as 200 riders will take a giant loop through Monroe and Brown counties for the event, hosted by Harley Davidson of Bloomington.

Motorcycle ride held for missing IU student

About 200 motorcyclists met at the Bloomington Harley Davidson the starting point for a 50-mile trek through southern Indiana. This is no joy ride but rather, a mission, to remind locals that two months later the case remains unsolved.

David Spierer, Lauren's uncle, explained the reason for the ride.

"Basically a rolling billboard with flyers-will compel someone to do something," he said.

 ::snipping2::

"I feel like somebody is standing idly by watching this with information and not coming forward," Charlene Spierer said.

"It's very simple. Somebody knows something and is not telling us and coming forward. It's very agonizing and frustrating," said Lauren's father.

Party school label has different meaning at IU
Updated: Aug 01, 2011 10:09 PM CDT
By Richard Essex

BLOOMINGTON - Indiana University is again labeled as one of the top party schools in the nation, but this year, the designation is no laughing matter.

The ranking comes weeks after 20-year-old student Lauren Spierer disappeared after a night of drinking in a local bar.

 ::snipping2::

The party label seems to be fading a little bit at IU. Six years ago, the school was ranked number one in the country. Last year, it was in the top ten and this year it checks in at number 16 among all schools in the country.

But a label is a label and it's one the university has been working on, with increased police presence during the Little 500, home football games and cracking down on drinking in the dorms

BLOOMINGTON - There's a possible new lead in the case of Lauren Spierer, the Indiana University student who went missing on June 3rd. The owner of a Vigo County landfill is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 13 Investigates confirmed.

A few weeks after 20-year-old IU student Lauren Spierer disappeared, documents obtained exclusively by Eyewitness News show that on June 16th the Bloomington Police Department requested a search warrant of a landfill in southern Vigo County about eight miles south of Terre Haute.

If the search warrant was obtained on June 16th have they already searched and found nothing?

Thanks grace-land, I haven't seen anything either you would think that since they got a warrant in June though that it would have been done by now.

FBI to search landfill, possibly in connection with Lauren Spierer case
A warrant has been filed to search a Vigo County landfill where trash from Bloomington gets dumped in connection with the case of missing IU student Lauren Spierer.

The landfills owners released the following statement:

"The FBI plans to search the Sycamore Ridge Landfill.  We were contacted two weeks ago by the FBI, they obtained a search warrant.  We are cooperating in any way we can.  We don't know who they are searching for, we can't tell you times or dates.  The FBI has reason to believe that something is in that landfill.  What that is, we don't know."

Fox59 has already reported that Bloomington Police went to the landfill and asked owners to stake off an area where Bloomington trash was dumped.  In an exclusive interview two weeks ago, the landfill's owner said the area had not yet been searched.

2 Months Into Spierer Search, Focus Turns To Landfill
FBI Will Search Vigo County Landfill, Company Owner Says
POSTED: 4:42 pm EDT August 3, 2011
UPDATED: 5:52 pm EDT August 3, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two months after Indiana University student Lauren Spierer was last seen, authorities are turning their attention to a Vigo County landfill in search of clues.

Republic Services, the owner of the Sycamore Ridge Landfill south of Terre Haute, which handles waste from Bloomington, confirmed that the company had been contacted by the FBI concerning a search.

 ::snipping2::

Landfill spokeswoman Peggy Mulloy said she hasn't been told when the search will happen but that a strategically engineered plan has been put in place for the massive undertaking, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.

"We will have an idea of where trash came from on a particular day and where that trash was placed in the landfill," she said.
