Lauren Spierer search: Friends may close ranks to 'protect' others, experts say

Three weeks after Edgemont's Lauren Spierer went missing from Indiana University, the lack of information from the sophomore's college friends has been frustrating her family and stalling local police.
Five of those who've been involved in the investigation — Jesse Wolff, Lauren's boyfriend; and friends Corey Rossman, Mike Beth, Jay Rosenbaum and David Rohn, who all saw her during the last few hours before she disappeared — have retained lawyers.
But the closing of the ranks among these young men and women might be more than just simply following legal advice.
Experts say there's a psychological condition that often kicks in during these types of crises, which prevent people — typically those of college or high- school age — from doing the right thing.
"My guess is a lot of those kids are a bit confused and afraid at this point," said Jeff Cohen, program director of the Mercy College School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in Dobbs Ferry.

Thanks for this article, Grace-land. I hope it will be more difficult for the five to "close ranks" now that they are all at home in separate places. They can't even be certain that all will return to IU to regroup; I think some parents will want their student to transfer to a different college now.
In short, if this group stays together in "close ranks" it will have to be via phone, email, and internet. I wonder if le has acquired the judicial permission to track these communications. Now that would be interesting!
Natalee Holloway's Mountainbrook high school group pretty much closed ranks during the first summer. But they were younger; they were not suspected of involvement; and they were all in the same small community.
Lauren's group should crack once people are separated and begin to get paranoid about what the others might be saying.
Again, I hope le is tapping phones.
I believe that Jesse graduated--so he's gone. I don't think that Corey, Mike, and Jay will return; they were the last persons to see Lauren, and it would be too "uncomfortable" to face the students at the university next school year. The other cast of characters might return. If le has enough of evidence against someone, they might go after them and do a little "communication" tracking. They'll always be worried about information getting out--stress!
Yes, Natalee's friends stuck together; they were her friends, unlike Laura's "friends." I came to SM because of Natalee.
I plan to be here for her and all of the missing persons--waiting for justice for all of them!

I wonder if the FBI can come in now that the persons of interest have crossed state lines. I have no idea whether this is possible -- but it sure would be nice.

Lauren Spierer search: Police have no more ‘clear indication' about Lauren than three weeks ago

Lauren Spierer search: Capt. Joe Qualters at June 24, 2011 conference
Despite weeks of investigation and searches, Bloomington Police have no better idea what happened to Lauren Spierer than they did when the 20-year-old IU student was reported missing June 3.
According to Bloomington police Capt. Joe Qualters, police are still “very much” in the information gathering stage in the case.
“We’ve spoken to a lot of people. That’s the responsible thing that you need to do during the course of an investigation,” Qualters said in Friday’s press conference, which was announced as the last of the long-running series of police updates on the case.
Police have interviewed people who were with Spierer the hours before she disappeared, and a “second tier” of her friends and associates to collect background information.
“But do we have any clear indication? Any more than ... three weeks ago? Unfortunately not,” Qualters said.
Police have had to seek out Spierer’s friends and associates for interviews, he said. One of her friends has reached out to police, Qualters said, confirming Charlene Spierer’s statement on Wednesday expressing her extreme disappointment that only one of her daughter’s friends has come to police with information. That friend has not been identified by authorities.
When asked if Spierer’s friends hold the key to her disappearance, Qualters answered, “Maybe that’s one of the reasons why they don’t contact us.” He called it perplexing, curious, disturbing and unfortunate.
No one mentioned in the investigation so far has been cleared by police, Qualters added.

Tracygirl, the way I read/understand the article--Jesse is Lauren's boyfriend...and...Corey, Mike, Jay, and David were the last 4 people who saw her before she disappeared.

Why should the friends contact the police? Why didn't the police obtain a list of friends, locate them and interview them before school was out? Why would they wait for the "friends" to contact them??

And get a lawyer? If he didn't have contact with her that night, then what would he have to worry about? I can understand the need for Corey and bunch to get a lawyer given they are the last known persons to be with Lauren. However Jesse's story is different, according to what we have read, he was not with her and was at his place awaiting a call from her. He says he called several times, texted several times to which she didn't answer. Then when he couldn't get a hold of her, then what? Did he just go to sleep? The next morning after he still couldn't get a hold of her he went to find her roommate to ask for the key to the apartment so he can check on her...ok, I suppose you can't knock on the door? After she is not there he jumps to the conclusion she is missing, goes to the police and calls he parents? Isn't that a bit strange?
In my opinion, he looks more hinky then anyone involved in this. Nothing he did prior to her going missing or after makes any sense at all. I am not sure if he actually did anything or if he helped cover up whatever happened to her. I just think he is involved somehow.

I have no idea, I have asked myself this question as well. I recall Le commenting on they couldn't stop anyone from leaving, did they ask them to stay though?

Agreed, his behavior is strange. Maybe he went to the apartment to remove ugly or pornographic messages he had sent to her computer, or to remove a stash of drugs he knew was there. Either way, it looks like he knew very early on that she wasn't coming back and that other people would soon be going through her stuff.

Hundreds Search for Missing Indiana Student on 'Find Lauren Day'
Published June 25, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The high-profile search for a missing Indiana University student raised painful memories for a local family whose own experience with a missing daughter draws a sharp contrast that investigators say illustrates the differences social status can make in such cases.
Crystal Grubb was found dead Oct. 1, 2010. Like Lauren Spierer, the Indiana University student who has been the subject of an intense search since she disappeared June 3, Grubb was out with friends before she went missing. On Saturday, more than 400 searchers convened in Bloomington again for a "Find Lauren Day."
::snipping2::
In Grubb's case, there were no public searches or offers of searches on horseback or in airplanes. Her disappearance was featured on the "Nancy Grace Show" and mentioned late in a few television newscasts, but there were no daily, televised news conferences as in the Spierer case.
Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Brad Swain, lead investigator in Grubb's murder, said the two cases are separated by the young women's socio-economic status. Grubb's family lives in a home with subsidized rent and used her father's Social Security disability income to buy her gravestone. Spierer, a fashion merchandising major, is from an affluent family in the New York City area, where her father is an accountant.
"Four blocks of geography between them, but two different worlds," Swain said.

“Find Lauren Day” … Hundreds of Volunteers Turn Out to Search for Missing Indiana University Student Lauren Spierer
http://scaredmonkeys.com/2011/06/26/find-lauren-day-hundreds-of-volunteers-turn-out-to-search-for-missing-indiana-university-student-lauren-spierer/
There is something inherently troubling when the very people that claim to be friends and the closest to Lauren Spierer are the very ones who are not talking and worse yet, hire attorneys.Is that what today’s youth have come to? These are college educated kids who need to do the right thing.
Five of those who’ve been involved in the investigation — Jesse Wolff, Lauren’s boyfriend; and friends Corey Rossman, Mike Beth, Jay Rosenbaum and David Rohn, who all saw her during the last few hours before she disappeared — have retained lawyers.
But the closing of the ranks among these young men and women might be more than just simply following legal advice.
A note to any of Lauren’s friends who might know what happened that night or where she is … take a bit of advice from the Casey Anthony murder trial, it’s better to admit an accident in the beginning than being charged in a murder and face life in prison or worse. Just saying.

Great post! Thanks, Red, for the words of wisdom. Coming forword with information might be a difficult decision to make for her friends, but it's the right thing to do.
Friends of Lauren, where is she? What happened to her? Help Lauren's parents find her!

Missing IU student's parents determined to find daughter
After a massive search effort turned up nothing Saturday, the parents of missing IU student Lauren Spierer say there is much more work to be done.

Bloomington, Ind—
After a massive search effort turned up nothing Saturday, the parents of missing IU student Lauren Spierer say there is much more work to be done.
“As a parent, you need to get up every day and look for your child,” said Robert Spierer, Lauren’s father. "There are still areas that have not been touched. Today, teams are getting assignments to go out and search. There are people on horses and ATVs searching,” he said.
::snipping2::
After a big media push last week to get volunteers to come out Saturday to join the search, hundreds of people showed up and canvassed heavily wooded areas, including going to Brown County. But investigators say no new clues were found.
“We’re just overwhelmed. More than 600 people came out to search. We greatly appreciate everything that was done,” said Robert Spierer.
Lauren’s mom said she is not giving up and is drawing on her daughter’s spirit to keep up the search.
“I get a lot of strength from Lauren. She’s a strong young lady,” said Charlene Spierer. “I can’t imagine not finding her and leaving her out here. We need information. Somebody has it,” she said.
“We’re so certain that the night she disappeared, someone has to know what happened,” said Robert. “Someone can share information that will help us find her.”

At 2:51 a.m. on a Friday in June, a barefoot Lauren Spierer walks through an alley with another Indiana University student on their way to his apartment.
It is the last video image of the 20-year-old Edgemont woman before she vanished.

The last reported sighting of the Indiana University sophomore — by a witness, and not caught on video — has her walking barefoot and turning the corner of 11th Street on to North College Avenue at about 4:15 a.m.
Police have not confirmed that account by Jay Rosenbaum, a friend of Spierer's who lives in the same building as Corey Rossman, the student she is seen walking with in the alley video.
Rosenbaum and Rossman are two of four people with Spierer in the last hours before she disappeared who have retained lawyers.
Rossman's roommate, Mike Beth, has hired an attorney. So has David Rohn, who at about 12:30 a.m. went with Spierer to Rosenbaum's apartment from the Smallwood Plaza residence where Spierer lives.
Spierer's boyfriend, Jesse Wolff, who has told friends he had no contact with her that night, also has retained a lawyer.
Perplexing, curious, disturbing are words Bloomington police Capt. Joe Qualters used to describe the lack of information from those who were with Spierer that night.
Spierer's roommate, Hadar Tamir, who was with her at Smallwood Plaza until Spierer left with Rohn at 12:30 a.m., said she's told police everything she knows. She says her female friends have told police what they know as well.

Vanished
Following the last-known steps of Lauren Spierer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. The distance Lauren Spierer covered on the last night anyone saw her can be walked on a hot day without breaking a sweat, spanned with a decent golf shot and traversed -- it turns out -- without shoes.
Retrace her steps here.
That a young woman could disappear -- seemingly off the face of the earth -- from such a small area that was trafficked by people and vehicles even in the wee hours of the morning would seem to defy every probability. Especially in a city that, on the night of June 2 and the early hours of June 3, never really went to sleep.
::snipping2::
But they -- Spierer, Rohn, Rosenbaum, Rossman and Beth -- were part of a group that had spent Memorial Day weekend camped out in the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, sleeping in tents and having a good time. The outing at the race track was the place, in fact, where Spierer had first met Rossman and Beth. Friends say they seemed to have hit it off.
::snipping2::
Here, Rossman, who is 21, and Spierer, who is 20, stayed for 41 minutes. Police won't say whether they were drinking alcohol or how much. The bar is being investigated for possible alcohol violations. But when they were done, Spierer, with Rossman at her side, walked barefoot across the sand and out the door, leaving her shoes behind, along with her cellphone, which would ring away the next morning with text messages from Spierer's boyfriend, Jesse Wolff, whom Spierer never seemed to connect with that night.
::snipping2::
Truly, this was a part of town that never quite went to bed.
For more than three weeks, countless people -- police, family, friends, strangers and even the IU basketball coach -- have been looking for Spierer. Like someone searching through the same drawers for something that's been misplaced, they keep going back over the same turf.
Yet Spierer is never there.

Last person to see missing student alive won't talk

His silence is deafening.
More than three weeks after Westchester college student Lauren Spierer vanished during a night out partying at Indiana University, Jason "Jay" Rosenbaum -- the last person to admit having seen her alive -- has ignored her parents' pleas for information that could lead them to their daughter, family friends told The Post.
"He is one of the people we wish would be more forthcoming," said a person involved in the ongoing search for the pretty, petite 20-year-old in Bloomington, Ind.
Instead, Rosenbaum, 21, has hired a high-profile criminal defense lawyer, left his Bloomington condo and, sources said, clammed up. His Indiana lawyer, James Voyles, didn't return calls.
