IU students present "Lauren Project" to Spierers

Robert and Charlene Spierer flew in from New York to listen to students' ideas. It's more than a lesson to them, it's a legacy.

"The most important thing here is for them to be thinking about safety, for them to be considering how they make their lives and their friends' lives better," Robert Spierer said.

"It would be so nice to see it go forth and to do some good somewhere, because it's a tragedy for our family, so something positive would be great," Charlene Spierer added.

From all-hours safe ride escorts to "Hoosier Buddy" systems to video campaigns, most presentations focused on the campus culture at night. That's when many students, just like Lauren, still walk alone.

"The harsh reality is there are so many people walking home alone at 2 am. I'm a freshman and I see it all the time," said IU student Alyssa Sheets.

Other student groups in the class suggested creating a smartphone app that would include Lauren's story, campus safety resources and connections to cab companies to get students home unharmed.

"I was quite impressed and I think that this is a great starting point," Robert Spierer said. "Some of these ideas were absolutely terrific and I would hate to see them die on the vine."

In fact, the Spierers hope they get explored more deeply and become a reality outside the classroom at IU and even on campuses nationwide. Students would like to see that too.

"They (the Spierers) came all the way here to hear these ideas and we wanted to make them ideas that could really help make sure that what happened to Lauren never happens again," said one of the students.

The Spierers say their daughter's case remains an active investigation. They continue to communicate with Bloomington Police and their own private detective, who are all working to find Lauren.

Lauren Spierer's parents to appear on Katie Couric's show
8:38 AM, Nov 29, 2012

The parents of missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer have taped a TV interview with journalist Katie Couric to air next week.

Locally, the “Katie” show will air at 3 p.m. Monday on WRTV (Channel 6), said Paul Montgomery, WRTV’s director of audience development.
 ::snipping2::
The Spierers shared a post on Wednesday that read, in part:

“It is impossible to explain, as we continue to search for Lauren, what the experience of having a missing child is like..... (T)here is deafening silence. That silence compounds our frustration, our desperation and our grief in not having found Lauren. It threatens to be our undoing, but make no mistake, we will never give up.”

Lauren Spierer's parents to Katie Couric: We have been 'stonewalled' by Lauren's friends
The missing Indiana University college student's parents appear on 'Katie,' say they are still in the dark about what happened to their daughter, more than a year and a half after she vanished.

Missing Indiana University student and Westchester native Lauren Spierer’s parents slammed their daughter’s college pals for “stonewalling” them about key details from the night their daughter disappeared.

In a taped interview with Katie Couric set to air on Monday, Robert and Charlene Spierer, of Greenburgh, fumed at Lauren’s friends for maintaining a code of silence about what happened in the hours before she vanished on June 3, 2011.

"I'm angry. We've been stonewalled, to some extent, by the last people to see Lauren," Robert Spierer told Couric on her talkshow, “Katie,” in clips released by ABC.

This has to be so difficult for the Spierer family.  Lauren's friends need to step up to the plate and tell what they know.  Actually maybe they aren't really friends at all if that's the game they're playing.

Figures from Lauren Spierer Investigation Return to Spotlight
 12/4/2012 10:40:00 PM

 ::snipping2::

In the meantime, the last known person to have seen Spierer, Jason “Jay” Rosenbaum, has broken his long-held media silence—but not to address the disappearance. In September, Rosenbaum gave an interview with a newspaper in West Bloomfield, Michigan, about his recently launched tech company. He was joined by business partner David Bleznak—a name familiar to Internet sleuths who claimed that Bleznak, a student at the University of Michigan and childhood friend of Rosenbaum, had tweeted from the Runcible Spoon, a Bloomington restaurant, the morning of Lauren’s disappearance on June 3. One of Rosenbaum’s attorneys later confirmed to IM that there were in fact “other people around” Rosenbaum’s apartment on the morning in question.

And yet another figure from the Spierer investigation has found his way back into the spotlight: “celebrity” New York detective Bo Dietl. A private eye hired by the Spierers to aid in the search for their daughter, Dietl famously called Bloomington police chief Mike Dietkhoff a “Gomer Pyle.” He now stars in a series of national TV commercials for Arby's (ironically taking a slap at Subway, whose poster boy, Jared Fogle, began his famous “Subway diet” as an IU student residing in Bloomington).

Lauren Spierer's parents open up to People magazine

The Spierers said they hope by telling their daughter's story to a popular national magazine, they'll finally get the one lead that will bring them closure and bring their daughter home.

"Our sole objective is to get that one lead. Anything that we do. If we have one lead, it will have been worth it. That's our whole objective, to get that one person," Charlene Spierer told The Herald-Times (http://bit.ly/SxeYx5 ) in a phone interview Friday evening after "Life without Lauren" hit newsstands.

In the article, the Spierers tell People magazine that police and investigators aren't getting tips or leads as frequently as they used to.

Family left with ‘despair, heartache’ on Lauren Spierer’s birthday

The parents of missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer released an emotional letter on their daughter’s 22nd birthday Thursday.

“There will be no gifts mailed to Bloomington, no cake, no candles, no excited anticipation as the celebration of one so loved approaches,” wrote Rob and Charlene Spierer.
  ::snipping2::
Lauren’s family has worked tirelessly to find their daughter and to uncover new information surrounding her disappearance.  The family has organized and participated in numerous searches and several events to raise awareness for their missing loved one.

“We have no doubt that when Lauren is found, the next chapter of this horrible nightmare will begin anew,” read the new letter in part. “On June 3, 2011, a set of parents was born; unwavering in our desire to find our daughter and see that justice is served for a life ended too early. We remain… just as determined as day one.”

Bloomington police have named several persons of interests in the case, but there are no named suspects at this time.  Rob Spierer said it’s still an open and active investigation, but the leads have slowed down. He said he does not believe Lauren was abducted and that something went terribly wrong the night she vanished. Her parents said they don’t believe their daughter is alive but they still want to be able to bring her home, and give her a proper burial.

Parents of missing Lauren Spierer release emotional letter as IU graduation nears
(March 3, 2013)

Two months before the two year anniversary of Lauren Spierer’s disappearance, her parents released a new emotional letter Wednesday.

“You’d think we would be used to it by now,” wrote Rob and Charlene Spierer in the letter posted to the family’s Facebook page. “You’d think our broken hearts would have started to mend.”

Lauren, a student at Indiana University, disappeared in the early morning hours of June 3, 2011 after a night out with friends. She was reportedly last seen at approximately 4:30 a.m. on the intersection of 11th Street and College Avenue in Bloomington, Ind.

As graduation at IU nears, the Spierers wrote about the difficulty they face accepting the fact that their daughter is missing.

“She could just as easily still be at IU, getting ready to graduate, getting ready to begin the next phase of her life,” wrote her parents. “We could be looking forward to Lauren’s big day with the anticipating, excitement and pride that any parent feels when their child is on the brink of such a wonderful accomplishment.

“There will be no graduation; there will be no excited anticipating. There will be no future for Lauren.”

Woman's remains found in remote Brown County site
Apr. 16, 2013 11:37 AM

NASHVILLE, IND. — A southern Indiana coroner says skeletal remains found last week at a remote site in Brown County are those of a woman who had been dead two years or more.

Brown County chief deputy coroner Earl Piper says mushroom hunters found the remains last Thursday on a ridge in a rugged, wooded area that’s a long hike from a rural road.

Piper told The Herald-Times the bones were scattered and the woman’s body had been in the remote area for “a couple of years or so at least.”

He said the woman’s age has not been determined. Piper said dental X-rays from missing women from the area will be compared to the dead woman’s teeth.

He said the remains may not be identified until next week.

Bloomington police Capt. Joseph Qualters said today it’s too early for them to get involved in this case.

It is awesome, Sister, for the firefighters to replace the signs!  Also, volunteers are hanging new posters around the campus to remind her classmates and families of Lauren before they graduate and leave the campus. Sadly, leaving Lauren behind.

Remains found in Indiana are not missing student Lauren Spierer
Published April 25, 2013

Remains found in a remote area in Indiana, which some initially suspected may be those of missing college student Lauren Spierer, have been identified as belonging to another woman who vanished a year earlier.

Brown County Chief Deputy Coroner Earl Piper told FoxNews.com Thursday that the remains discovered belong to 26-year-old Kate McGrayel, who was reported missing in April 2010. The remains were found on private property by two women looking for mushrooms.

Piper said the identification was made through dental records. No cause of death has been released.

Missing IU student Lauren Spierer to be remembered at graduation
3 hours ago

Posters of Lauren Spierer are all over IU’s campus. Spierer would have been graduating this weekend but she is still missing.  The school’s president will talk about her this weekend at commencement. Her family just wishes someone would come forward to help “Find Lauren.”

Graduation. – for senior Alexa D’Sa, it’s celebrating the end of one journey and the beginning of another.

“I am well prepared,” said D’Sa.  “I am at peace with the whole situation.  I am ready, but it has been great four years.”

A joy-filled time for most, but not for everyone.

“I can not imagine being there this weekend and Lauren not being there,” said Charlene Spierer.

Lauren Spierer should be putting on cap and gown. She should be walking with her friends at commencement. Instead, she is still missing.

“She is not starting her life that she should be starting.  It is a tragedy,” said Charlene Spierer.

Spierer was last seen June 3, 2011.  Her picture is still a fixture on campus.  Her disappearance has impacted the entire university, so much so IU President Michael McRobbie’s opening remarks at commencement will focus on Lauren.

“It was important to us to recognize that, in a way that is appropriate, just to let her family know that we certainly have not forgotten and that we are all hoping for a resolution and they certainly are in our thoughts,” said IU Spokesman Mark Land.
 ::snipping2::
“You see her face everywhere,” said Robert Spierer.  “You look at her picture and you feel a heartache and so even though a day can be long, when you put it all together it has not been long.  It seems like it goes by very quickly.”

Charlene Spierer said she wishes she knew the word or phrase that would motivate someone, anyone, to step up and say something.

The Spierers said they are not coming back to Bloomington for commencement because it would be too painful.  They plan to be back in July, coming back to campus to continue their fight to find their daughter.

If you have information, please come forward.

Written correspondence can be sent to:
 Find Lauren
 PO Box 1226
 Bloomington, IN 47402

You can also call Bloomington police at (812) 339-4477 or Beau Dietl & Associates at (800) 777-9366.

IU class of 2013 graduates without Lauren Spierer
Posted: 05/04/2013
Last Updated: 1 hour ago

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - It was an emotional time at Indiana University as the class of 2013 graduated without Lauren Spierer on Saturday.

Spierer would have been part of this year’s graduating class.

She has been missing for almost two years.

"I hope this weekend and her absence will inspire some kind of change because they deserve to know what happened. She's a member of our class and she's a member of the community here at IU, and that's important," said fellow student Evie Salomon.

IU President Michael McRobbie mentioned Spierer during the ceremonies Saturday afternoon.

"On this day when we celebrate both the past accomplishments of our students and the promising future upon which they are about to embark, I ask that all of us keep Lauren and members of her family in our thoughts," McRobbie said.

Everyone at the ceremony then observed a moment of silence.

Female graduates said they learned a big lesson from Spierer's story.

"It made a lot of people realize you need to be smart about when you go out. A lot of people think oh that is never going to happen to me," a student said.

Friends of the Spierers asked the graduating class to remember Spierer by writing 63 on their hands.

63 stands for June 3, the day  that Spierer vanished.
