The parents of missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer are thrilled that three young women, abducted off the street and thought to be dead, were found last week after years of imprisonment in a Cleveland home.

But their joy didn’t give them any more hope that their own daughter would be found alive, after she went missing in June 2011 after a night out in Bloomington, Ind.

“This event, as miraculous as it was, as wonderful as it was for these people to be found and freed, after being in such a horrible state, is great for their families,” Robert Spierer told The Journal News. “But we don’t feel it’s relevant to Lauren’s case.”

Lauren Spierer, then a 20-year-old studying fashion merchandizing, vanished after a night partying with friends. Her last known stop was at an off-campus townhouse building where she was believed to have interacted with three students: Corey Rossman, Mike Beth and Jay Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum has said he watched Spierer, unsteady on her feet and with a bruise under her eye, leave for her own apartment down the street shortly after 4 a.m. June 3.

“We still believe that she may not have left Corey and Mike’s or Jay’s apartment,” Robert Spierer said. “The odds of her being abducted in that slim period are extremely low. That’s not what I think happened.”

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Nearly two years after the disappearance of an Indiana University student, one of the last people to see her accused her parents of harassing him and friends who he said had nothing to do with the young woman's disappearance.

"It's inappropriate the way they're harassing people that are also victims in this case," Corey Rossman told The (Westchester County, N.Y.) Journal News on Thursday, talking publicly for the first time since Lauren Spierer disappeared. "We've done nothing wrong. If we'd done something wrong, we would have been arrested already. All they're doing is hurting my career."

Rossman also seemed to distance himself from his lawyer Carl Salzmann's statement that he had no memory of his final moments with Spierer.

"I never said that," Rossman said. "You're taking statements that were said by my lawyer. I never said I did or didn't."

Rossman, meanwhile, said he has fully cooperated with police investigators. Charlene and Robert Spierer, of Edgemont, N.Y., have accused Rossman and the other "persons of interest" of withholding information from police and have called on them to submit to police-administered lie-detector tests.

Rossman was with Spierer, then 20, in the hours before she went missing in June 2011 in Bloomington, Ind. He accompanied her to a bar, then back to her off-campus apartment, where he was punched in the face by another student. His lawyer would later claim that Rossman lost memory of the night's events. A surveillance video from her apartment, however, showed that Rossman helped an unsteady Spierer out of the building after being punched.

He carried her for part of the way to his townhouse up the street. Rossman, his roommate Mike Beth and neighbor Jay Rosenbaum were the last three people known to have interacted with her.

Rossman said he's been harassed by media and the Spierer family for nearly two years now. When reached by cell phone Thursday morning, he yelled at the reporter for "harassing" him at work.

"What do you think, I'm doing drugs now?" he shouted. "No, I'm at work. Don't ever call again. If you contact me again, you're going to hear from my lawyer. Either way, you're going to hear from my lawyer."

Through interviews and statements via social media, Rob and Charlene Spierer have repeatedly asked Rossman and others who were with Spierer on the night of her disappearance to take a lie detector test.

"Silent for two years, & this is what he comes out to say? Don't like the implications, Corey? Take the police-administered lie-detector test," tweeted @NewsonLaurenS, an account associated with the Spierer family.

"It's strange you mention nothing about finding out what happened. It's strange you aren't compassionate. Or is it so strange?" read another tweet.

The Journal News said that when a reporter reached Rossman by phone Thursday, he accused the reporter of "harassing" him at work.

"I feel if she never met Corey Rossman, she’d be alive today," Robert Spierer said in a 2012 interview. "His claim of memory loss is laughable."

Indiana University student Zoe Camp saw Lauren Spierer swallowing shots at a party hours before she disappeared, but remains haunted by another encounter with the missing coed she slept through.

Shortly after 3 a.m. June 3, 2011, a drunken Spierer – who’d just fallen on her face and smacked her head on concrete – and her companion Corey Rossman rang the doorbell to Camp’s apartment, where she and her three roommates were asleep.

Since no one answered, the two left, with Rossman slinging Spierer over his shoulders as he carried her down the steps. An hour later, she vanished.

“We’ll never know what would have happened if we answered,” Camp told The Journal News Wednesday. “One of us could have walked her home, or she could have slept at our house. Maybe things would have turned out differently.”

It wasn’t until recently that Camp reached out to Spierer’s family, and also shared her observations with The Journal News in a phone interview and email exchanges.

She said she wants to help shed light on the period before and after Spierer vanished.

“I think it helps everyone to have a full picture of that night and all the underlying relationships,” she wrote. “It takes away the mystery and conspiracy theories to finally have a full accounting of this.”

She’s friends with Jay Rosenbaum, Corey Rossman and Mike Beth, the last three people who were known to see Spierer the morning she went missing.

Bloomington Police Receive More Than 3,000 Spierer Case Tips

Bloomington Police Department officials say they have received 3,060 tips in the case of Lauren Spierer, the Indiana University student who disappeared in June 3, 2011.

Police say 166 of those tips were provided in 2013. A statement released in advance of the two year anniversary of Spierer’s disappearance did not elaborate on information provided in the tips.

“Despite being nearly two years into this investigation, information continues to come in regarding Lauren’s case and investigators diligently pursue the information with the same level of commitment as in the beginning,” the statement reads.

Even they’re numbed by the sound of themselves talking, as they express despair, anger and frustration in the face of the second anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance. Still, the once-private couple from Greenburgh are afraid that if they stop talking about their daughter, Indiana University student Lauren Spierer, her still-unsolved case will cease to be a story. Specifically, they want to keep pressure on four young men, all considered “persons of interest” in the investigation, to stop hiding behind their lawyers and submit to police lie-detector tests.

Submitting to polygraphs, the Spierers contend, is the only way to confirm that Corey Rossman, Jay Rosenbaum, Mike Beth and Jesse Wolff are being honest about their interactions with 20-year-old Lauren Spierer in the hours before her disappearance. In November, they wrote letters to the parents of all four men pleading for them to get their children to take polygraphs. Two denied the request; two didn’t even respond.

Officials with the Bloomington Police Department said they have received 3,060 tips in connection to the investigation as of May 24, 2013.

Of the thousands of tips that police have received since the start of the investigation, police said 166 of the tips were received in 2013 alone.

(above blue italics by me) I call foul on this, how can she possibly know this occurred if she was asleep.  Did Rosenbaum tell her even though he claims to have no memory of the night?  Seems if it was via security camera we would have heard of this by now.  As for the slinging over the shoulder detail, it smacks of artistic license by the reporter.  IMO, this is yet another attempt to rehabilitate the image of Rosenbaum, et al.  I had hoped that, with some time and distance, one of those with access to the truth would have found the humanity to reveal it by now.

It was a night like any other when Lauren Spierer, a sophomore at Indiana University, set out for a party in a Big Ten college town two years ago.

Hours later, the 20-year-old Spierer vanished – and on the second anniversary of her disappearance, the question of what befell her is as baffling as it was on June 3, 2011, the day she was reported missing.

While police sources say they are probing "all avenues" in the case, their investigation has focused on two theories: Spierer was abducted by a stranger as she walked alone to her apartment, or she died inside the apartment building of three male acquaintances and her body later disposed of.

Both theories, while plausible, present a conundrum, according to a former federal law enforcement official. Mike Harkins, who retired from the FBI last year, called stranger abductions "very rare," while also acknowledging the difficulty of concealing a body without getting caught.

“Stranger abductions are not very common. They do happen and it could have happened in this instance, but overall they are rare,” he told FoxNews.com.

But, Harkins added, “It’s difficult to dispose of a body like that and then have that not be traced back to the individuals.”   

Rob and Charlene Spierer, the young woman's parents, said their daughter is likely dead and suspect the male students last seen with her have knowledge of what happened to her.

The two-year-anniversary of Lauren Spierer's disappearance is in two days, and it doesn't look like her loved ones will be getting the closure they seek. This is a heartbreaking update, but it's nothing new after two years of covering the missing IU student's disappearance. As of June 1, 2013, numerous news sources are abuzz with these same sentiments as they acknowledge the second year of her unsolved disappearance. This update comes not long after one of the men to last see the missing woman came out with accusations of harassment against her family.
As the second year of her disappearance begins, it's hard to imagine where the missing Bloomington, Ind. woman could be. Officials are reportedly weighing the investigation on two theories: Either she died and her friends disposed of her remains, or someone kidnapped her as she walked home the night she disappeared. Both theories have their strong and weak points, and both are equally believable. However, without even so much as a body of evidence it's hard to lean either way as far as theories go.

Lauren Spierer's friends struggle with 'moving on'

Hadar Tamir, Spierer’s roommate, was also among the graduates.

“That made it all very real for us; graduating without her and going on with our lives without her,” Tamir wrote in an email to the paper.

Tamir was friends with graduate Jay Rosenbaum, who was the last person known to see Spierer before she went missing. She said she supports the Spierer family in their effort to get Rosenbaum and three other students to be more forthcoming with authorities.

“I do not know what the boys are up to these days,” Tamir said, “and I wish that the select few that could really help out the Spierers and cooperate with them would finally do so.”

Jesse Wolff, Lauren Spierer’s boyfriend, passed a privately administered lie-detector test and won’t take one with Bloomington, Ind., police because they aren’t to be trusted, his parents told The Journal News on Saturday.

“I don’t think they’re very adept at anything except giving kids drinking tickets,” Nadine Wolff said. “I don’t trust them, period.”

The parents, in a telephone interview, also said the Spierer’s parents are “liars,” called The Journal News biased, and took a shot at Lauren Spierer herself.

“This poor little girl is not with us today because of her drug abuse,” Nadine Wolff said.

Their comments came two days before the second anniversary of the Indiana University student’s disappearance. They said they were responding to a continuing onslaught in the media against their son, including an article in Saturday’s paper in which Robert and Charlene Spierer repeat their call for Jesse Wolff and three other young men to submit to police-administered polygraphs.

“I can not believe I have lived without Lauren for two years.  It just does not seem possible.  A lot of times I think about something that happened in the past two years and I will think that it was a couple of months ago when I realize it was in 2011, so it is just inconceivable that two years has passed.”

The family said Monday will be a somber day for them.  They will get together to remember Lauren, and talk about life before she went missing.

“There are certain periods when it’s harder than others,” said Robert Spierer.  “I guess those milestone dates are a little bit more difficult than others.”

“For almost two years now, devastated parents, Rob and Charlene Spierer have pleaded on television, through newspaper articles, and in public announcements for any type of information regarding their daughter’s disappearance. While so little information has been revealed, the Spierers are sure of one thing; someone is responsible for the vanishing of their daughter. They won’t stop until they know who, who has so selfishly taken their daughter away from them?

The police departments, detectives, forensic analysts and loved ones are discouraged. Before them stands a case with no leads, devastated parents, and still no Lauren. So, I’m here today to suggest a new method; a new strategy for finding answers. We have to keep the movement moving. We can’t let Lauren’s case become cold. The matter must now be taken into our hands. At this point, it’s clear that there’s nothing that Lauren can do. But, she’s a victim, and victims deserve justice. If I leave here today having taught you only one thing, it’s that two years is much too long to have made such minimal progress.

I look around the room today and see the faces of my classmates, my teacher, members of my future graduating class, and most importantly, my friends. This could be anyone. This could be us. This could be me next year when I move in as a freshman. This could become you as you innocently enjoy your summer. This could be your sister, your cousin, your brother, or your friend. So let’s imagine that it is you. Imagine being taken, even killed, leaving no traces of evidence; seeing your picture on flyers and billboards titled “Missing”. Picture your parents as they hopelessly wonder what might have been. Picture your sisters, brothers, friends, and loved ones. You would want them to have answers. You would want them to find peace.

Now it’s up to us, and everyone affected to remember Lauren, to carry her legacy, to keep her in our hearts and minds until we learn the truth. We have a responsibility to find her. We owe it to ourselves, and to everyone around the world, to prove that there are consequences for all actions; consequences for withholding the truth. Whether meted out in a court of law or created by the tortuous hell of keeping a secret, the price will be paid one way or another. As we approach another anniversary of her disappearance, I ask you to think of her. Keep Lauren’s story alive. Thank you.”
