That's unfortunate, because I would think the skull wouldn't have been embedded if it had been recently moved.

When I hear that it makes me think that the object embedded in the dirt is stuck fairly well.  I've kicked rocks (sorry fort that comparison to a skull) in dirt and they barely move if they are stuck in the ground.  So a "kick" may not have moved it at all.
