Police find missing Essex couple's car

http://www.wcax.com/story/14882641/state-investigators-join-search-for-missing-essex-couple

The biggest break-- the couple's dark green Saturn sedan has been located in Vermont. Police are not releasing a specific location or saying if anything in the vehicle indicated foul play.

"We need to process the vehicle," LaRose said. "It will take us some time to secure a warrant and we want to preserve that area as much as we can."

Inside the couple's home, however, police say there are some troubling details. The couple seems to have left in a hurry and without critical daily meds. The window to the garage is broken and they're not answering their cell phones.

Car of missing Essex couple found near their home

http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/article/20110610/NEWS02/110610007/Car-missing-Essex-couple-found-near-their-home

The car was located Friday afternoon, but police initially withheld its location. They announced late in the evening that the Saturn sedan had been found near an apartment building at 241 Pearl St. in Essex Junction, near the Susie Wilson Road-area neighborhood where the Curriers lived.

Police declined to release any other details about how the car was found or whether it yielded any clues to the couple’s whereabouts.
 ::snipping2::

Police said they found freshly broken glass from a window in an area of the residence connecting the living area to an attached garage. LaRose did not rule out the possibility that someone else might have been involved in the couple’s disappearance.

Bill and Lorraine Currier each has a health condition that requires daily medication, police have said. When asked whether he thought the medication made them the target of a crime, LaRose said no.

Police: man is 'person of interest' in Vermont disappearance
June 15, 2011

 ::snipping2::
Police say an eyewitness saw the man in the drawing possibly driving the Curriers' car through a shopping plaza last Thursday. Investigators say the sketch has generated numerous leads, and they're still examining surveillance video from area businesses.

Investigators are optimistic the Curriers are still alive. "I don't have any good hard information to indicate that they're not," said Essex Police Lt. George Murtie. "I'd rather let the evidence speak for itself. And I'm hopeful that they're alive."

Wednesday, a package turned up outside the Curriers' home, but police say it did not contain anything suspicious.

Witness Described Man Seen Driving Missing Vermont Couple's Car
June 15, 2011

The search for a missing Vermont couple is focused on a long-haired man who was spotted driving their car the day after they disappeared, police said today.

Police issued a sketch of the man who was described to them by a citizen who saw the man on Thursday driving a green Saturn that belonged to Bill and Lorraine Currier. He was spotted driving on Pearl Street in Essex Junction, where the Curriers lived.

Officials are asking the public to help identify the person in the sketch.

hey consider the couple's disappearance suspicious, in part because police say they appear to have left behind their daily medication.

Police told the Associated Press the bank accounts of the couple, as well as the mobile phones registered to William and Lorraine Currier, have not been used.

$10,000 Reward Offered For Missing Vt Couple
June 17, 2011

ESSEX, Vt. -- The family of an Essex, Vt., couple who disappeared under mysterious circumstances is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information.
 ::snipping2::
Police Lt. George Murtie said a gun the couple bought recently is missing. He said there's been no activity on their bank accounts, and that investigators are poring over bank records, phone records, computers and personal documents looking for clues.

The sketch of the man released earlier still stands, said Murtie. The man is now a person of interest in the disappearance.

Newschannel Five also spoke to Linda Pratt, an old friend of Lorraine Currier's, who said she ran into Lorraine two months ago. Pratt said Lorraine told her she was scared of a man she was somehow acquainted with.

"She never mentioned a name. She just said, "This guy ... at this point, I'm scared to death of him. It's like he's stalking me,'" Pratt said.

Was missing Vermont woman a stalking victim?
June 17, 2011

NECN: Jack Thurston, Essex, Vt.) - Family members of a missing Vermont couple hope a cash reward will help police crack the case. Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt. vanished more than a week ago. Investigators call their disappearance suspicious, and say a gun they recently purchased is now missing from their home. Police are also poring over bank records, phone histories, and surveillance video from Essex businesses, looking for clues.
 ::snipping2::
Police have stopped short of saying the Curriers are victims of foul play. But they did say they have several leads following the release of a surveillance sketch of a person of interest who was possibly seen driving the couple's car after they vanished.

A longtime friend of Lorraine Currier says Currier feared for her safety before she disappeared. Linda Pratt tells WPTZ-TV that Currier recently told her she was afraid of a man who had been bothering her. "She never mentioned a name," Pratt said. "She just said, 'This guy, at this point I'm scared to death of him, it's like he's stalking me.'"

Investigators say they're looking into Pratt's concerns, but would not say if Lorraine Currier ever told them she was being harassed.

Police Still Reviewing Video, Records In Missing Couple Case
June 20, 2011

COLCHESTER, Vt. -- There was little new information to report in the case of a couple missing from their Essex Junction home, a detective said Monday.

Det. Lt. George Murtie said he and others at the Essex Police Department were still going through a great deal of surveillance video and various records related to the case.

Essex police seek Currier details - even if they don't match sketch
June 21, 2011

Nearly two weeks after William and Lorraine Currier disappeared, Essex Police are asking the public for information – even if it doesn’t jive with details police have already made public.

In particular, police said they would welcome possible clues even if they don’t match the composite sketch of a man who a witness said might have been driving the Curriers’ green Saturn car the day after they went missing.

People with possible information about the Currier case are asked to call Essex Police at 878-8331.

ESSEX — The likelihood that a missing Essex couple will be found safe two weeks after vanishing from their Essex home diminishes with each passing day, police say.

“We are very concerned for the well-being of Bill and Lorraine Currier,” Acting Essex Police Chief Brad LaRose said Thursday, 14 days after the couple was reported missing. “As time goes on, the concern that one or both of them may no longer be alive increases.”

 ::snipping2::

“There are several things about the case that are very concerning,” he said. Among them:

• A gun the Curriers recently purchased was missing from the home. Investigators have declined to identify the firearm or to say whether they believe it was stolen.

• The window of an interior door connecting the garage to the house was smashed, scattering bits of broken glass inside the garage.

• Belongings the couple likely would have taken on a vacation remained at the house.

Court rules to temporarily seal warrants in case of missing Essex couple
June 28, 2011

The Vermont Supreme Court today granted a prosecutor’s request to temporarily withhold search warrants and other documents related to the suspicious disappearance of an Essex couple.

"The motion is granted pending full review of the stay request by the full court," associate justice Marilyn Skoglund wrote in the court’s decision. "The state may file supplemental briefing in support of they motion by July 1, 2011. ... The party that initially requested access to the information may file a response by July 6, 2011."

Chittenden County State’s Attorney T.J. Donovan, who has fought to keep the information sealed, appealed to the high court Monday afternoon, immediately after a judge in Vermont Superior Court in Burlington ruled that the public had the right to inspect the documents.

This article doesn't reflect the Vermont Supreme Court Decision (see above article) to "temporarily withhold search warrants and other documents related to the suspicious disappearance of an Essex couple", since it's a day older, but I'm posting it because it has a lot of information.

Attorney General's Office enters search warrants debate
July 2, 2011

Burlington Free Press
Written by
Sam Hemingway, Free Press

The state Attorney General's Office, at the request of Chittenden County's top prosecutor, entered the debate Friday about whether search-warrant papers associated with the June 9 disappearance of an Essex couple should be made public.

In papers filed Friday afternoon with the Vermont Supreme Court in Montpelier, Assistant Attorney General John Treadwell asked justices to declare that such documents are by nature confidential, or at least to order that the documents remain sealed until an evidentiary hearing about sealing them can be held.
 ::snipping2::
Attorney General William Sorrell said Donovan requested that Sorrell's staff represent the Chittenden County State's Attorney Office's interests before the high court.

"T.J. called and asked if we would," Sorrell said. "I think he did so since we litigate most of the public-records issues for the state."
 ::snipping2::
Treadwell in his filing wrote that releasing the search-warrant materials is not in the public's interest when no one has been taken into police custody.

"The investigation is in its early stages and no arrest has been made," Treadwell wrote. "Public access ... may impede the truth-seeking law enforcement function. ... The public's interest is significantly different when charges have been filed."

Tribute to missing Essex couple
July 4, 2011

 ::snipping2::
Flowers, signs and a balloon were left at the front steps of the couple's Colbert Street home Monday morning -- a tribute for Lorraine on her 56th birthday. A neighbor said a relative dropped them off in the morning. The balloon, emblazoned with the words, "Our thoughts and prayers are with you," floated next to the door. A sign taped to the door read, "We love you and miss you

Essex police: Foul play suspected in missing couple case
11:57 AM, Jul. 18, 2011  |  14Comments

Foul play is suspected in the case of an Essex couple that has been missing for more than a month, Essex police said for the first time Monday.

Police said forensic evidence taken from inside and outside the couple’s Colbert Street street home led them to believe foul play was involved. Police did not say whether a third party was involved. Police did call the case an “isolated incident.”
 ::snipping2::
Police are no longer looking for a man depicted in a composite sketch of a man released a few days after the couple disappeared. The man was said to be seen driving the the Curriers’ car. Police say the car may have been seen, but the description of the driver is not as accurate as they once believed.

Outside DNA test ordered for missing Essex couple
July 20, 2011

Police searching for answers in the disappearance of an Essex couple are getting some high-tech help thanks to the town select board.

Tuesday night the Essex select board approved a request from the police department for up to $15,000. The money will be used to pay for special DNA tests that can't be performed in Vermont and are so advanced the FBI doesn't even do them.
 ::snipping2::
"The type of testing done is unique in and of itself. So it's not a situation where another type of testing failed so we have to revert to this. No, this is right of out the shoot we go with the testing on this material seized," LaRose said.
 ::snipping2::
"We think the world of our police department. If they feel that this amount of money is necessary to continue the investigation than we certainly have no problem approving them spending again equitable sharing funds," said Linda Myers, the chair of the Essex select board.

This equitable sharing fund that Myers is referring to is not taxpayer money. It's pooled cash confiscated from drug dealers and it's available to police departments who participate in the county's drug task force.

Right now police aren't saying what's being tested. They say they'll share more information when the results come back in two to three weeks.

Large-Scale Searches Possible In Currier Case
July 20, 2011

ESSEX JCT., Vt. -- Essex Police say they are discussing plans for large-scale searches, possibly to include members of the public, in coming weeks.
 ::snipping2::
LaRose also said he believed large-scale searches could begin within the next two weeks. He said those searches would likely involve police dogs and possibly the help of the public. Police are waiting until weather temperatures cool down to employ the public or large teams.
