Ohio mother Sara Apple and 4-year-old son missing since Thursday night

(CBS/WBNS/AP) NEWARK, Ohio - Police in central Ohio are investigating the disappearance of Sara Apple, a Newark bank teller, and her 4-year-old son Max, who haven't been seen since Thursday.

Apple's husband Chris said that he last spoke to his wife on Thursday when she said that she was staying at her mother's house. He has not heard from her since, reports CBS affiliate WBNS.

"Of course, the worst case scenario pops into your head," said Chris Apple to the station. "There's no reason for her to not be at her mom's or [at home]. Were they carjacked or kidnapped?"

According to police, Sara Apple, 24, is believed to be driving a 2004 white Saturn Ion with Ohio license plate No. FCQ-5079. The vehicle also has a family icon sticker representing a family of four in the rear window.

Sara Apple is 5 feet tall and weighs about 140 pounds, police said. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Max is about 3 feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the pair is asked to call the Newark Division of Police at 740-670-7201 or 740-670-7934.

Newark police continue 4-day search for missing woman, boy
9:13 AM, Jun. 13, 2011  |

 ::snipping2::

Over the weekend, Newark police spoke with relatives and friends. No one was aware of any threats or indications that Sara Apple planned to leave, Snow said.

“Nobody had any clue,” Chris Apple said.

She was being treated for depression and stopped taking her medications, Snow said.

Newark police contacted the FBI and law enforcement in other states, Snow said. Sara Apple recently reconnected with her father’s family in the Carolinas, he added.

 ::snipping2::

We’re worked well with the FBI on a number of cases,” Snow said.
Family and friends spent the weekend passing out fliers, updating a Facebook page, “Sara Apple and Max Apple Missing” and speaking with media.

Newark police stop investigation after learning woman left voluntarily
June 14, 2011

NEWARK — Newark police have halted an investigation into the disappearance of Sara Apple after they determined she left voluntarily, possibly stealing money from her bank employer to flee, according to a Newark police news release.

“While there is still great interest in determining the safety of (her son) Max Apple, the police department is no longer, at this time, actively searching for Sara Apple as the victim of any crime,” according to the news release.

Sara Apple, who was responsible for the money management in the family, failed to make significant payments on financial obligations, such as mortgage and car payments, according to a Newark police news release. Numerous checks were returned with insufficient funds. She created new bank accounts, and police found undelivered “goodbye” letters to family and friends.

They also found a “to do” list of products to obtain and actions to delay her discovery, according to the news release.

Heath police was notified about a significant shortfall in Sara Apple’s Thursday banking till at Fiberglas Federal Credit Union, Newark police Sgt. Scott Snow said. No complaint had been filed with Heath police Tuesday, Sgt. Craig Black said.

Newark police will maintain an open investigation and consider possible criminal charges such as inducing panic or interference with custody.

Wow, thanks for the updates! an angelic monkey I wonder how much money she took....

I was wondering the same thing.  How much money did she take?  She was siphoning money off the househould accounts, not paying the mortgage and such, which causes credit problems and etc.  But she was head cashier at a bank, and it looks like she embezzled there.  The above article says "Police say Mrs. Apple’s employer has reported a significant shortfall in Apple’s till and the employer will make a determination if they wish to pursue a criminal investigation into the missing money."  I wonder what a constitutes "a significant shortfall"?

Missing Ohio mom Sara Apple plotted her disappearance with son, police say
June 15, 2011

 ::snipping2::
Police said that Apple, 24, may have left on her own accord because she was at the center of an internal investigation by her employer, the Fiberglas Credit Union, who claim that hundreds of dollars were reported missing from her cash drawer, reports CBS affiliate WBNS.
 ::snipping2::
The couple apparently recently decided to separate and share custody of Max.

At the Apple's home police say they found a to-do list of products to buy and actions to take that would delay her discovery, the station reports.

"She's never stolen a pencil, nothing in her life," said Trish Yohman, who is Sara Apple's mother, to the station. "I just don't believe that she would do this of her own free will."
As of now, police say that the only victim in the case is Max Apple.

Sara Apple faces possible criminal charges, such as inducing panic or interference with custody.

'I'll Never Stop Looking,' Says Dad About Missing Newark Boy
June 17, 2011

NEWARK, Ohio -- Sara Apple and her 4-year-old son, Max Apple, still are missing, but there are some new developments in their story.
 ::snipping2::
nvestigators immediately began searching for the pair and looking at the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.

After a review of the facts, investigators said they determined the disappearance is voluntary on Sara's part.

Chris filed for divorce Wednesday.

Initiating divorce gives Chris a temporary custody order for Max.

Since Sara has not been charged with any crime, it's the only way police will be able to hold on to Max if they find the mother and son.
 ::snipping2::
The Licking County prosecutors office has not filed any charges against Sara currently.

Newark Mother, Son Return To Central Ohio
June 20, 2011

NEWARK, Ohio -- A Newark mother returns to Central Ohio after she allegedly admits to taking money from a Newark credit union and disappearing with her 4-year-old son.
Sara Apple, 24, and her 4-year-old son, Max Apple, arrived home to Columbus Monday afternoon, 10 days after they were reported missing.

She disclosed her and her son's location to authorities in Trenton, Maine, Sunday evening -- after her car broke and her money ran out, Newark police told NBC4.

Sara told Maine authorities she and Max left her white Saturn in a parking lot in Erie, Penn., and purchased another vehicle.

She said the second car broke down several times between Erie, Penn., and Trenton, Maine.

Since her options seemingly were limited and Max was asking about family, she called authorities in Trenton.

NEWARK — After days apart, Sara and Max Apple were met by smiling, tearful faces and welcome arms at the Port Columbus International Airport on Monday evening.

Max Apple, 4, was passed from relative to relative before his arms locked securely around his father’s neck, waving at waiting news crews.

For Max’s father, Chris Apple, the moment was overwhelming.
 ::snipping2::
Newark police asked the Licking County Prosecutor’s Office to review the case, Sarver said. No charges have been filed.

Chris Apple filed for divorce last week and obtained temporary custody of their child. He hopes the next steps will go smoothly.

“She’s my son’s mother no matter what,” Chris Apple said. “I know she’s a great mom to him

“I was more excited than the day he was born,” he said.

Lovin, she sounds like a very troubled young woman.  Thank God Max was returned safely to his daddy.
