Could a plea deal still be negotiated at this point in time to avoid a death penalty verdict?

I thought that I read on here that they can ask for a plea all the way even while time for  deliberation by the jury....

The defense claims that the communication occurred during the time Casey Anthony's daughter, Caylee, was reported missing. Attorneys said there were four communications on July 14, 2008, a day before the Anthony family learned that Casey Anthony's car was towed from an Amscot parking lot. Family members said the car reeked of the smell of death.
It's not known who contacted whom or if Thompson and George Anthony talked to each other.

They can get a deal right up until the verdict is read.

 WFTV-Channel 9 tonight explored the possibility that forensic expert Dr. Henry Lee might leave the Casey Anthony case.

 “It’s all because of money problems,” anchor Martie Salt said in introducing the story at the top of the 5 p.m. newscast. Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee Marie.

 WFTV’s Kathi Belich asked defense attorney Jose Baez, “Is that going to be a big blow to the defense if Dr. Lee doesn’t testify?”

 Baez walked away.

I really doubt the judge will let her testify.  Didn't he already say that the grieving process starts after the body is found?  Wouldn't she have to talk to KC?
