The reason for that drop in tourism is as applicable today as it was in 2005. Although the Holloway story isn't in the news much anymore, a wide community of U.S. citizens remain outraged at the cavalier treatment of this case and Ms. Holloway's family.

Aruba is NOT a safe place for Americans to visit. The anti-American sentiment is palpable if you read local Aruba newspapers. I have seen published photos of presumably Americans "behaving badly" and quotations about "Stupid Americans." They like our cash; that's it.

The current Aruba government (MEP Party) recently called for an official boycott of Diario, a newspaper that has been crusading about government scandals. The editor of this paper, Jossy Mansur, is the only Arabian of importance who has constantly called for a proper investigation into the Holloway case.

The MEP and the current Prime Minister are quite friendly with Chavez and Venezuela (as you mentioned, less than 20 miles away).

The murder rate in Aruba, once claimed to be "1 in 20 years," is actually twice if not three times the U.S. rate for comparable-sized cities (50,000 - 100,000). Some deaths ruled as "suicide" or "natural cause" are in fact not; the crime figures are cooked to preserve the tourism industry.

The gambling and drinking legal ages in Aruba are not enforced, even among locals. Maybe this only reflects my age or a certain kind of bigotry, but I wouldn't want to spend time in a casino or bar with a pack of local teenage boys - in the U.S. or anywhere.

Aruba law enforcement advised Miss Holloway's father, Dave Holloway, to "watch his drinks ... "

Numerous of incidents of thefts from rooms, often while the guests are IN the rooms.

Those moonlight and early morning walks on the beach are not good ideas. You might stumble onto a drug recovery, drug bust, or a corpse in the same spot where a bust occurred the previous day. (Packages of drugs are dropped from planes, at night, during the right "tide" to wash up on shore.)

Aside from all of that, the lengths to which Aruba officials and business leaders went to victimize Miss Holloway and her family are astounding. I think this is best illustrated by Aruba's re-invention of the story of Max DeVries, a 14-year-old boy from Brighton, Michigan, traveling with his family, who apparently drowned while Jet-Skiing on May 12, 2004.

In July of 2005, shortly after Miss Holloway vanished, Police Chief Gerold Dompig was quoted in Amigoe.com as stating that Max's disappearance was an insurance scam arranged by his mother (a widow), that an American insurance company was investigating, and that Max was alive and well in Brazil. Not a word of this is true. All of this was to plant the idea that Miss Holloway also was an insurance scam - and to this day, most Arabian people think this is the case. I sincerely invite you to do your own research on this one.

Mr. Greenfield, I imagine that you went to Aruba as a "travel writer" so you probably had a lovely visit indeed. But your article is a disservice to the American traveling public.

Update: I now have a few more details and an anticipated arrival time for the Dutch experts. There should be a better understanding of their intentions by tommorrow afternoon. Stay Tuned!

I discovered that the videos were shot on 6/10/2005 and 6/11/2005 and were part of a larger video broken into many pieces to save server space. I contacted Ed Smith and began a roller-coaster ride dealing with a person with delusions. (I'm not going to talk to much about my dealings with Ed.)

I discovered that Ed was not reasonable and did not wish to share the TRUTH about the videos. Whatever it is Ed is hiding about these videos, it will remain hidden. Or will it? He will not release the 'missing video' no matter how much money is involved. That alone makes me suspicious about what the true nature of what the videos entails.

Last time I checked, planting body parts in order
to construct fake crime scenes was a felony in
just about any country.
