Natalee Holloway movie debuts in Holland this week
Published: 5:27 am
Updated: 5:36 am

<snipped>

This week a film debuting in Holland takes a shot at solving the case through a fictional detective obsessed with what happened.

"Me and Mr. Jones on Natalee Island" debuts September 22 at the Utrecht Film Festival in The Netherlands.  Director Paul Ruven's movie ends with "a" solution to the crime...but at this point only Joran van der Sloot knows if it's "the" answer to the mystery.

And that's troublesome because van der Sloot has told a variety of versions of what happened the night he and Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway left a bar in Oranjestad, Aruba.  She was never seen again.  He became a tabloid sensation on five continents.

Van der Sloot has claimed her body was dumped in the sea and that she was buried in the concrete of a construction site.  He promised Natalee's family information on her fate but never delivered the info despite taking their money.  That earned him indictments by a federal grand jury here in Birmingham on wire fraud and extortion charges.

He's currently sitting in Peru's Castro Castro prison waiting word on whether prosecutors are going to ask for life imprisonment on a murder charge there.

The corpse of 21 year old Peruvian student Stephany Flores was found in his Lima hotel room five years to the day of Natalee's disappearance.  He says he killed her in a "fit of rage" after she found material about Natalee on his laptop.  Prosecutors say it was a simple case of robbery and murder.

So one of the questions regarding Ruven's film is how can he possibly top the truth? He was actually filming in Aruba when news of the Flores/van der Sloot case broke.

On his blog for the film Ruven points out that van der Sloot appears 100% sure Natalee will never be found unless he tells the world.  Ruven's film will put forth his own answer to the question.  And, as he points out, only Joran van der Sloot will know for sure.

Cheryl Rae Young ·  Top Commenter
Wondering what that idiot who wrote an e-book "No evidence of a crime" is thinking now? She defended Vandersloot and trashed the missing girls mom in Aruba. I say was because of what she wrote is reason he was able to stay out of prison and commit another murder just as he did Natalie Holloway in Aruba years earlier. Sad that people can be so wrong, then NEVER admit, nor say sorry...shame on her! JB, once again proven wrong...but she sides with known criminals, murders and child molesters.

Joran van der Sloot in the increasingly close

 ::snipping2::

Van der Sloot suffers from lack of money, while in Peruvian prisons everything revolves around money. An American woman would be to Van der Sloot, for religious reasons, considerable sums of money transferred. Also, they have paid for his lawyer.

"That she is now stopped, the flow of money turned up," says crime reporter John van den Heuvel, Van der Sloot visited last week and spoke regarding the first hearing of his trial. "Van der Sloot must pay his lawyer. If he does not he has a problem, "said the reporter this morning on Radio 538.

Medications
According to Van den Heuvel same woman said that Van der Sloot is administered medications that alter consciousness. The journalist calls it remarkable that no representative of the Dutch embassy in Peru in the first hearing was present, while it is usual in such cases the judicial process to follow.

Van der Sloot is becoming isolated, "says Van den Heuvel. "He gets pretty tough in jail for back teeth. Are at play behind the scenes foreign affairs. "

Lifelong
It seems that the judges go along with a more severe indictment against Van der Sloot, who is accused of the Peruvian Stephany Flores robbed and murdered. Lawyers for the family Flores have called them. With this heavy charge hangs Van der Sloot life above the head, while his lawyer thought he was with ten to fifteen years' imprisonment could get away.

The family of the murdered Flores, had announced his life so bitter as possible. This is done now to influence the judges, but also by people in prison against Van der Sloot to set.

Joran situation ever penibeler
Column by John van de Heuvel

 ::snipping2::

Although public interest in the matter outside Peru is reduced, the criminal case because more and more interesting. Happening behind the scenes so strange. Unlike in the Netherlands have relatives in Peru or the legal ability to influence the judicial process. The influential family Stephany Flores grabbed that opportunity with both hands. In a fiery speech demanding the family lawyer that the charges against Van der Sloot is significantly increased. He believes that the accusation does not read "murder followed by theft," but "robbery followed by murder." Apparently a subtle difference, but for Joran determines the rest of his life.

The accusation that the Flores family wants to see, implied that Van der Sloot was planning to rob Stephany Flores. To escape possible, he would have killed her afterwards. On this charge, in Dutch law similar to the crime of "qualified homicide", is in Peru as in our country than a life sentence.

The three female judges heard the story of the lawyer and benevolently decided last Friday that the prosecution case against Van der Sloot indeed re-evaluate. The result is that the progress of the process is delayed for months. This makes the situation even Joran van der Sloot penibeler it already was. But where was his lawyer on this rather crucial first hearing? And why was Joran in the week before the trial suddenly transferred to another prison wing?

After the meeting I drove to the Castro Prison and spoke with Van der Sloot. He confirmed now sit between Peruvian prisoners. After his transfer he had to sleep one night in a corridor because of the overcrowded jail is no place for him. Although Van der Sloot did not want to say, financial problems seem to play tricks on him severely. Prisoners with money making in Peru's prisons were in charge. If Van der Sloot can afford no more protection, he runs great risks. Earlier, the father of Stephany Flores hinted that fellow prisoners he would set against Van der Sloot.

That Joran is little new lawyer for his effort, like a money issue. According to the former lawyer of Van der Sloot, Mr. Maximo Altez, his confrere not even the criminal file, and he did not dare to take on the powerful family Flores. Joran himself still thinks he has a few years comes from the cell, but it seems more likely that the prediction of the father of Stephany Flores convenience. Revenge is a dish that is served ice cold in Peru.

Van der Sloot facing beefed up charges
Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)  The judge in Joran van der Sloot's murder case in Peru has told the prosecutor to beef up the charges against the Dutchman.
Published: 9/18 8:52 am
Updated: 5:39 am

Basically, that means the judge agrees with arguments by the family of victim Stephany Flores that the crime should carry a life sentence.

Van der Sloot has admitted he killed Stephany Flores in May 2010. The two had met at a poker tournament in a Lima hotel/casino. Security cameras show the two of them going into van der Sloot's hotel room. Stephany never walked out.

Van der Sloot says he killed the 21 year old in a fit of rage after she found material relating to Natalee Holloway on his laptop. Natalee is the Mountain Brook teen who disappeared on a graduation trip to Aruba. She was last seen with van der Sloot leaving a bar. He was questioned repeatedly but never charged in her disappearance.

But Natalee obviously came back to haunt him in that Lima hotel room. Stephany's corpse was discovered five years to the day of Natalee's disappearance, setting off a search for van der Sloot who had fled to Chile.

Prosecutors dispute the crime of passion defense pointing out that their inspection of van der Sloot's computer hard drive shows the Natalee material was accessed the day before Stephany Flores was killed. They say van der Sloot was broke and desperate and killed Stephany for money she had won gambling.

At a preliminary hearing Monday the prosecution asked for a charge of murder followed by robbery. That would mean a maximum sentence of 30 years.

The Flores family has argued for a charge of robbery followed by murder which would carry a maximum life sentence.

According to Radio Netherlands Worldwide, the judge in the case has agreed to the Flores family argument and ordered the new charge be filed.

Any delay in the case poses a potential risk that van der Sloot could get out of jail.

By December, he will have been held on remand for the maximum 18 months allowed under Peruvian law. This could mean he will be released and await the remainder of his trial as a free person. Given van der Sloot's history of international flight, that's a risk.

The Public Prosecutor, however, can request an extension of his pre-trial detention.

Why was the family of Stephany Flores put in a position of appealing the prosecutor's case against Joran van der Sloot so close to the 18 month trial deadline ... the 18 month trial deadline that implies that Joran ... a flight risk ... could be released while the prosecutor puts together another case?

The timing of the filing of charge against Joran by the Peruvian prosecutor as well as the filing of the lesser charge that both the Flores' attorney and the judge disagree does not set well with me.

When the 18 month deadline was considered ... a month ago Stephany's father voiced his concern over the prosecutor taking so much to present a case against Joran to the judge.  A short time later a case was forthcoming but ... not a case that demanded a life sentence.

Did the prosecutor count on an appeal by the attorney of the Flores' family ... an appeal process that would delay the trial past the 18 month deadline ... an appeal process that would all Joran ... a flight risk ... his freedom?

Is there stuff happening behind the scenes that is not in the best interest of justice for Stephany?

Woman's family wants speedy trial for van der Sloot
By the CNN Wire Staff
August 17, 2011 -- Updated 2200 GMT (0600 HKT

(CNN) -- The family of a slain Peruvian woman is urging prosecutors to file their case against murder suspect Joran van der Sloot, warning that he may be released by December unless the case goes ahead.

"We are worried because Peruvian law says that if a suspect's trial doesn't begin within 18 months after his arrest, authorities are obligated to set the suspect free," Ricardo Flores, the dead woman's father, told CNN.

Van der Sloot faces charges in the May 2010 killing of Stephany Flores, who was found dead in his Lima hotel room. Police say van der Sloot took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

Investigators delivered their case file to prosecutors in June for a decision on charges. Ricardo Flores said the prosecutor in the case, Miriam Riveros Castellares, is "not moving with the speed that a case of this magnitude merits."

"We're asking that either the prosecutor file charges or that authorities remove her from this case and name somebody else," he said.

There was no immediate response to the family's concerns from the prosecutor's office.

Bottom Line

Can the the prosecutor in the Stephany Flores case be trusted?  Could she be corrupt?  Could she be incompetent?

The prosecutor had three months to put a case together following receipt of evidence from investigators and still could not get it right.  The Flores' family attorney comprehended.  The Judge comprehended?

Peruvian judges to decide on trial date for Van der Sloot
Published on September 12, 2011

<snipped>

His (Joran) defence team is looking to lodge a manslaughter plea which comes with a six to 20 year prison sentence. It says Flores' murder was an act of passion after she allegedly discovered information related to the Holloway case on his laptop.

But prosecutors and Flores' family are seeking a 30-year sentence, arguing the murder and robbing of the young woman was premeditated.

"Van der Sloot was hungry, Van der Sloot hadn't paid the hotel, Van der Sloot met a girl in the casino that he did not find attractive, but that had money. If you accept this evidence which is sustained by the prosecution we start to realize the murder of Stephany Flores was not a sudden reaction to her seeing information on his laptop pertaining to the Natalee Holloway case, we are warning that the prosecution's account shows this was a planned act," the Flores family lawyer, Edward Alvarez said.

Alvarez said there were also some discrepancies with the evidence presented in the case and the official charges of voluntary manslaughter.

"We have said there are inconsistencies in the prosecution's account and its accusations, between the evidence it uses and what it is asking for. These inconsistencies could bring about negative consequences at trial because it could result in a mistrial," Alvarez said.

A Realization was Reached

May 10, 2011 10:02 AM Print Text
Natalee Holloway's mom: She's dead

(CBS News)  Nearly six years ago, Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba.

Her mother, Beth Holloway, has been relentless in her pursuit of the truth in her daughter's case, which is still unsolved.

But on "The Early Show" Tuesday, when speaking about her new Lifetime TV series, Beth Holloway admitted she doesn't think her daughter is alive today

She said she reached the realization after learning of the death of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, allegedly at the hands of Joran van der Sloot in Peru.

She said, "(When) I discovered ferocity in which he murdered Stephany Flores. That put it in perspective for me as to what transpired with Natalee."

Joran situation ever penibeler
Column by John van de Heuvel

 ::snipping2::

I don't believe, for a minute, that his donation line has run dry.  Perhaps he should spend less on drugs and food (munchies?).

Joran has ALWAYS been afraid to ask for money...pfffft...I'm sure John made the poor guy an offering....just to get in the door....and Paul Ruven will probably pay for the comments after Joran watches the DVD.

Three judges decided the prosecutor she relook at the charges.....where oh where have we heard about the three, perfect judges decisions, before?  Good enough for Aruba but not so good in Peru?
