LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Clarence Clemons, the saxophone player in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, died on Saturday, according to media reports, almost a week after he had a stroke at his Florida home. He was 69.

Clarence Clemons -- Bruce Springsteen's "Big Man" on the sax -- has taken his final bow

The son of a Norwalk, Va., fish seller and grandson of a Baptist preacher, Mr. Clemons grew up helping his dad deliver fish while practicing his saxophone in the back room of the store. He played in the high school jazz band and attended Maryland State College on a football scholarship. A potential career with the Cleveland Browns ended due to injuries in a car crash.

Asbury Park's leading rock club, the Stone Pony, will open at noon today for a tribute to the late Clarence Clemons, who died yesterday at the age of 69.

Ever conscious of iconography, especially on “Born to Run,” the album that was to be his unabashed, arduously recorded attempt at rock greatness, Mr. Springsteen didn’t lightly choose its cover image. It shows him leaning on a shoulder that, when the album is unfolded, belongs to Mr. Clemons. (Mr. Springsteen was standing on something, since Mr. Clemons was a head taller.) Mr. Springsteen is smiling, watching, listening as Mr. Clemons plays his saxophone, the way he had listened to and synthesized so much of rock ’n’ roll’s past. The attentive grin on Mr. Springsteen’s face suggests that he’s learning some deeply pleasurable secret; the openness and determination in Mr. Clemons’s eyes, gleaming out of deep shadows, show he is proud to hand it on to his friend. 

The article is heart-warming.  Mr. Clemons came a long way from playing the Sax in the back room of his fathers store.

Apparently, it takes two saxophonists to fill the shoes of "the big man," Clarence Clemons.

And one of them is Clemons' blood relative.

Bruce Springsteen announced that a pair of horn men - Clemons' nephew Jake and Eddie Manion - will stand in for the late saxist in the E Street band's upcoming live events.

In 1992, Jake Clemons played sax alongside his uncle at the Clinton presidential inauguration. He has also played with The Swell Season and has guested with the E Street Band in the past.

Manion served as an original player with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and has worked with Springsteen on various projects, including "The Seeger Sessions."
