State crime lab chief resigns after problems raised on DUI evidence

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/State-crime-lab-chief-resigns-after-problems-1264475.php#ixzz1Q6zVlRq8

The head of the state labs that test crime evidence is stepping down, a move that prosecutors and defense lawyers say could help bring back lost confidence in the way drunken-driving cases are handled around the state.

Barry Logan's resignation, effective March 14, comes after a series of problems at the Washington State Patrol toxicology lab have cast doubts on breath tests for suspected drunken drivers.

"Barry has done an excellent job of addressing the issues during this difficult period," State Patrol Chief John Batiste said. "But he and I agree that forward momentum will require different leadership."

The decision stunned attorneys who have worked with Logan on criminal cases and saddened his staff, leaving some in tears, but the lab has drawn stinging criticism about errors and ethical problems in recent months.

"Too many things went wrong on his watch," said defense attorney Francisco Duarte, who specializes in DUI cases. "I believe he wanted to run a laboratory that was based on integrity -- and ultimately, he failed to do so."

OSCaseyAnthony Casey Anthony News
I'll have an update soon to CNN report that Anthonys' attorney said their daughter was "not innocent." #CaseyAnthony

http://twitter.com/#!/OSCaseyAnthony

Has anyone noticed the convoluted syntax in that statement.  The normal person would say "their daughter was guilty."  Their version is not quite as accusatory.  Peter Hyatt should have a field day with that.

flutter, I brought that up a little while ago....not innocent of WHAT???

These people better be careful what they say as they will end up being ostracized in the scientific community as Dr. Vass is the standard for this type of forensic work.

I bet the jury can't wait for Aston, after every defense witness testifies, to get up and make some sense of what's going on, what they just heard and the truth of the matter.

Like those hairs...Baez...Ashton gets up and asks were any of the hairs Baez questioned you about in the trunk of a car?

Hello??

Puzzler...I agree.... it's the same with me....when Jeff starts talking I listen.

Can the state bring this up to discredit the witness?

OMG................can these witnesses get any screwier? I guess his "professional" reputation is shot anyway, so what does he have to lose?  Does the defense team search for professionally incompetent witnesses on google?

es Trial Notes
@ @OSCaseyAnthony Interesting he qualifies it as his not having said parents thought she was "guilty of murder." Tuchman didn't claim that.

http://twitter.com/#!/TrialNotes

told ya!!!  until the get in front of the camera and say we believe KC is guilty of killing KC......they get no sympathy from me.....SNAKES!!!

TY Capp, seems he is not in a position to "review" anybody to me.

Sunny, I have to cut Cindy some slack.  I'd be in the Looney Bin by now if I were her.  You know more of her evil deeds than I do for sure but if one of my kids had done this, I couldn't deal at all.

Good Morning !!!

Here is something interesting...

The court transcript revealed that he was unable to secure life and health insurance for his teenage daughter and that he had " written bad checks in the past.[3]"

According to media reports, his financial situation deteriorated in the recent years, with his home purchased for over $670,000 in 2007, foreclosed and appraised at $272,900.[3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jose_Baez_%28lawyer%29

In regards to his bad checks writing, shame on him. His home situation that his house is upside down I can't blame him for. That is happening all over the country. That is not his fault. Goodness knows I can't tolerate the man, but the housing situation is not his doings.

With all the programs for loan modifications, it was not necessary. They will reduced the note to the current appraisal or less if he had applied, but with the way he procrastinates in getting his business together for KC, I can see why he most likely lost it.

It sounds as if he bought way over his income range to begin with from what I have found about his few clients.

IIRC there were significant problems when Bozo attempted to work out a deal with his mortgage holder. I wouldn't be surprised if he "exagerated" his income, or potential income, to purchase a home out of his income bracket. I'm not giving him a pass on the house, it's another example of his financial irresponsiblity, which has been well documented for many years, including time prior to the recession. This was one of the issues of his entrance into the FL bar.  Bozo is a showboat and lives above his means...JMHO
