Klaas I can't find it on TV. Studied Oceanography at the Harbor City up the coast. A road goes to it from Avalon put you have to go up the hills and down through the goats, cactus... where the fire is and around the center to come into the harbor city north of Avalon unless by boat.

The only road, I think, out of the city goes toward the fire. I wouldn't think there would not be enough boats to get them off... could air vac but don't know if they are doing that. I flew a sea plane out of Avalon, once, in my 30's and it took 4 black russians and trusty boyfriend to get m on the plane.. ps in my more drinking days! not real Russians...that would be fun tho
   
I am very worried about the people being able to  evacuate, however.

I quess it's just me then...I just find it curious...to say the least...that the FBI were doing blood comparisons on the 9th of June, before Beth or Dave had given any samples of their own...same day the search of Deepak's car was done.

I do not want to belabor this point as we have the shoes, but I think and I am just guessing as most of us are --- but on 6/9/07, the FBI saw blood in the car.  They asked for samples.  If FBI did not have a lab person with them, they probably requested samples be taken by ALE and that slides be sent to them.  Here we go.  ALE collected samples, they threw them away and checked somebody's desk where cocoa krispies with milk had spilled out and sent that to the FBI.  They probably sent two slides.  Most labs would want two slides of the identical thing.  It's just to make sure you have the right thing, i.e., they got a scraping of Beth's skin and made more than 1 slide to compare.  In fact, in a high-profile case, they would probably make dozens of slides.


The problem is the FBI knows there was blood but cannot prove it since they were sent the residue from the milk that spilled from the chief's cocoa krispies.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba —  Reports conflicted Saturday in developments of the Alabama honor student who has been missing in Aruba for almost two weeks.

David Cruz, a spokesman for the Aruban Minister of Justice (search) told FOX News Natalee Holloway (search), who was on vacation with friends with a graduation trip when she disappeared, was confirmed dead and that authorities knew the location of her body.

However, Cruz later retracted the statement, saying he was a victim of a "misinformation campaign."

The mother of the 18-year-old told FOX News authorities had not yet contacted them with this information but did say that Natalee's father, who is divorced from her mother, was with investigators looking for the body.

These reports came after significant, and at times conflicting, developments with the five suspects being detained in the case.

The "Diario," a local daily newspaper, is reporting that a human blood sample found in a car at the residence of one of the teens in custody — the 17-year-old son of a high-ranking island judicuary official — is now being sent to the U.S. and will be tested for a possible match to Natalee, whose mother gave a blood sample to investigators.

There is alot of rugged country on Catalina.  There are places people can go but there would be no shelter or power.

Many are leaving by ship.

Klaas is Avalon the only town on the island or is there other settlements?

Pretty much the only town.  There are a few ranches and houses outside the city but really just Avalon.

Thanks Klaas.  I found a website and map of the island and it looked pretty rugged.  Lots of places/beaches marked on the coasts but I imagined they were only marked for tourists or hikers.  Airport seems a fair way from Avalon.  Would need to be another Dunkirk to get everyone off the island

I don't think Deepak's car was searched on the 9th.  Was the 15th I think it was confiscated and sent supposedly to the Netherlands.  I wonder what the freight bill on that was!  And prolly not even the same car as he had plenty of time to switch or switch interiors.

To take swabs, I think somebody like Dennis Jacobs or one of those people who put on the bunny suits for our benefit just took a Q Tip and rubbed on a dark spot in the interior.

Car was not really searched in Aruba.  Apparently.

Evacuation begins

Boats are taking hundreds Avalon evacuees off the island to Long Beach and San Pedro. One just arrived in San Pedro, the other should arrive soon in Long Beach.

At 8:20 p.m., Avalon Fire Chief Steve Hoefs said: "We're in danger of losing the Birdpark Canyon Housing complex of 30 to 40 homes." He also said that he had received a report that power was out at the historic landmark known as the Avalon Casino. The fire also threatened a city public works area.

Avalon City Counciman Scott Nelson said: "It was due to happen, a hundred year fire."

They want to know what they say, any results from the swabs I suppose.  These are the ones that reportedly came back as choc and cleaning fluid.  Want to present this to a jury, etc.

Same reason they ask for all the reports.

But supposedly Oduber saw it, FBI agent saw it and member of ALE saw it and all told the family this but I doubt at the same time on a certain date and it was rumor until the test came back and then it was not blood any more.

Thanks... I think they need to fly in military cargo evac planes... but I am a Virgo so may be a worry wart, at times. I just remember walking there and didn't remember that much room from the ridge of fire in your pictures and to the beach.
