Lake searched for missing woman

By Hal Dardick and Jo Napolitano
Tribune staff reporters
Published May 10, 2007, 5:41 PM CDT

Firefighters in boats searched a Plainfield lake Thursday as part of their effort to find a mother of two who has been missing for nearly two weeks.

Lisa Stebic, 37, was last seen in the early evening of April 30 inside her home in the 13200 block of Red Star Drive, Plainfield. Her husband, Craig, told investigators he did not see her leave. The couple live together, but are in the middle of a divorce.

On Wednesday, Craig Stebic filed for temporary full custody of the couple's children.

Dion Davi, the attorney representing Craig Stebic, said he wanted to protect his client so that "Lisa cannot come in and disappear with the children just as she has herself."

Lisa Stebic's divorce attorney, Glenn Kahn, said he didn't think Davi's filing was "legally necessary" and that he will fight the request.

"There's no reason at this point to take away rights from her," Kahn said of his client. "I have to assume that she's still alive until there is information to the contrary."

Plainfield Deputy Police Chief Mark Eiting said firefighters searched Lake Renwick, just north of U.S. Highway 30 and Renwick Road, Thursday morning. The lake is about five miles from the Stebic home.

"We had no information that anything was out there," Eiting said. "It was just part of the search. We are going to continue to conduct searches as part of the overall investigative process."

Police say divers from the Plainfield Fire Department's Dive Team will search retention ponds immediately surrounding the Stebic residence starting at about 9 a.m. Friday.

The Plainfield Emergency Management Agency on Saturday plans to search "large water areas, retention ponds, bicycle and jogging trails, parks areas and natural areas" within the village.

Anyone wishing to volunteer in Saturday's search should meet at Lincoln Elementary School at 14740 Meadow Lane in Plainfield at 8 a.m. for registration and briefing.

Eiting said there is still no activity on Lisa Stebic's credit cards or cell phone. He said, too that authorities in Crystal Falls, Mich., have searched family-owned property there and that nothing came of their efforts.

Man's body found during search for missing woman

By James Kimberly
Tribune staff reporter
Published May 13, 2007

A massive ground search by more than 300 people failed to turn up any trace of a missing Plainfield woman, but it did turn up the remains of another person.

Plainfield Police Cmdr. Mike Altenhoff said the body of a 72-year-old man was discovered Saturday at 8500 Grove Rd. in unincorporated Kendall County. The death appeared to be a suicide, according to the Kendall County sheriff's office.

Kendall County authorities would not identify the man because his family had not been notified of his death.

Altenhoff said the investigation into the disappearance of Lisa Stebic, 37, a mother of two, continues even though the field search of 4 square miles surrounding her Plainfield home has been completed.

Seventy-five professionals and 285 volunteers on Saturday searched fields and wooded areas around Stebic's home in the 13200 block of Red Star Drive. On Friday, divers searched retention ponds near the home.

Stebic was last seen the evening of April 30. Her husband, Craig, told police he did not see her leave the house that day. The couple live together but are divorcing.

The Stebic family has offered a $20,000 reward.

Husband absent from search; family pleas for his polygraph

May 14, 2007
By Jennifer Golz Staff Writer

Tension might be surfacing between Craig Stebic and his missing wife's family.

Until now, Lisa Stebic's family has said they do not want to make any assumptions as to what has happened to the 37-year-old Plainfield mom who has been missing since May 1.

Here we go again....Don't want to jump to conclusions, but seen this story too many times and when the family starts becoming suspicious......
He said she went to work out with someone she met online - which others
say is out of character -
Couldn't he just go through with the divorce.

Evidently the ex is unfamiliar with the saying "those with nothing to hide, hide nothing".  Should've tried to catch Dr. Phil on his days off.

If her friends say the online thing is unlikely, you can bet it probably is.

If the ex has nothing to hide, hook him up and let's see.

Stebic's Husband Accuses Authorities Of Coercion

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (STNG)  -- While police say they have no suspects in the disappearance of a local mother of two, her husband's attorney believes a midnight search of her house was an attempt to intimidate her husband and coerce a confession.

No kidding, Sherlock - of course, they want you to confess and they aren't "formally" calling you a suspect because they don't have enough evidence, YET - Her whole family is getting a bad vibe from him based on his actions following her disappearance, sound familiar - Unfortunately, we all know how this is going to end, but hopefully, the authorities will obtain enough info to hang him.

Lisa filed to evict husband

On May 9, Stebic filed the emergency motion for custody of the kids, ages 10 and 12. His attorney Dion Davi said the motion was an attempt to protect Craig in case Lisa returned, took the children and disappeared again.

In his response today, Lisa’s attorney Glenn Kahn said, considering the unanswered questions surrounding Lisa’s disappearance, the court should maintain the status quo instead of possibly jeopardizing Lisa’s parental rights.

The judge decided the motion was not an emergency and set it for a hearing May 22 in Will County Circuit Court.

Now we have the additional fuel for the motive - And love the spin his attorney put on his filing for emergency custody of the kids - her parents were confused by this action from him AND now his attorney claims it is "in case" she returns and then "disappears" this time with the kids -

Is Craig an ass or what - UH, if she was going to take the kids, think she would have, not left and then come back and taken them, you idiot - You killed her - she's not missing, you know where she is - Glad the judge didn't grant him this motion - hopefully they find her before May 22 and those poor kids can live with her parents and not her murderer.

Casting Blame
Monday, May 21, 2007

FOXNews.com/Courtesy of the Plainfield, Ill, Police Department

Lisa Stebic, who was last seen around 6 p.m. April 30, at her home.

The cousin of missing Illinois mom Lisa Stebic says her family is holding off casting blame on who may be responsible for her disappearance until evidence proves exactly what happened to her.

"The police have not told us they have a suspect," Mark Greenberg told FOX News on Monday. "The people pointing fingers at this point are the media."

Plainfield, Ill., police were able to obtain a warrant to search Stebic's home on May 14. Local news reports said they obtained the warrant because they had found traces of her blood on a tarp in her husband's vehicle.

But Dion Davi, the attorney for Stebic's husband, Craig, told FOX News that it's not yet clear whether the tarp was the cause for the warrant. Davi said that after two searches of the Stebic home earlier this month, he received from police an itemized list of what was taken from the home, which included the family computer. The tarp was not on the list for either of those two searches.

That means it may be something else police found after those two searches that prompted the May 14 warrant.

Unnamed police sources, as reported in local newspapers like The Naperville Sun and the Joliet Herald News, had said officials used the blood evidence to obtain the warrant by positing a scenario that her husband Craig, an avid hunter, might have used the tarp to transport his wife's body from the home.

Why is this guy wasting time and energy on trying for custody right now? I read that he wanted to be sure in case she showed up that she wouldn't come and take the kids.  There is something fishy here.  Like he's taking this action to have everyone believe he thinks she just took off on a lark and will be back to grab the kids.  From what I've read, she was a good, devoted mother.  No reason to deny her the kids even IF she left for a while, which I don't think is the case.  I don't think a mother such as she's been described would leave her kids to wonder where she is.  Not a mom that took a fairly meanial job to be home with kids in the afternoon...I wonder how this is going to play out?

if he is dumb enough to kill her in the first place, he would probably be dumb enough to file for custody thinking he is locking up his alibi maybe.

Hi There Monkeys.  Yesterday on Crime Library - they had posted that in the midst of the search for Lisa, they unfortunately found a Jane Doe - young black woman.  They believe her age to be that of a teenager.  They are presently trying to ID her.  So if you have a moment - please go to their website, and post that scetch around as much as possible.  I am sure she has family or loved ones who are looking for her too. Sad
