Albany, N.Y. - A proposed state law stems from the Casey Anthony murder case.

If approved, the measure would impose stricter requirements for parents to report missing children.

The measure is being supported by a state legislator from Queens. An online petition for Caylee's Law has collected more than 300,000 signatures.

NY lawmakers considering 'Caylee's Law'
July 14, 2011

New York state is among many states that will be considering the implementation of “Caylee’s Law,” which would make it a felony to not report a child missing, with two separate bills put forward in the senate and assembly. As the law stands today, New York considers the failure or untimely reporting of a missing or deceased child a misdemeanor.

The concept comes from an online petition that’s drawn the signatures of more than 1.2 million people — and counting. Created by Michelle Crowder, a mother from Oklahoma, the petition is hosted by change.org, a website that allows users to create petitions on any social and cultural causes, and stir awareness.

“There should be a new law created called Caylee’s Law that will make it a felony for a parent or guardian to not notify law enforcement of a child going missing within 24 hours,” reads the overview. “Let’s keep another case like Caylee Anthony out of the courts.”

Assemblyman Joseph D. Morelle, D - Irondequoit, says while it’s difficult to legislate responsible parenting, there will be “a real effort” to try to make sure the state does the right thing. Even if the law is responding to an isolated incident, it happened, and it’s worth preventing, Morelle said.

Just an FYI

NY Boy's Body Found; Death 2 Years Ago Unreported
10-5-12
 ::snipping2::
State police said Saturday that they had unearthed the boy's remains from the backyard of a home in Farmingdale, after being told by the boy's mother that he died two years ago, under circumstances that remain unclear.

Authorities say the family never reported the child's death.

Suffolk County officials initially went to the home Wednesday to check on the health of one of the woman's three children.

But they grew concerned when the family couldn't account for the whereabouts of another child, born in 2009.
