Quick drive-by.
I am not good at setting up links!! But was reading an article on CNN.com and it said the following about abductions. Could explain why the immediate media campaign to find Maddie. The Klaas foundation said it actually aids parents of abductees to start a media campaign immediately and why...it appears time is of the essence. This is just too sad. here is a snippet:

Quote
In his opinion, the headlines are not based on race or class but on the actual stories that prompt them, and these, he says, can be kept newsworthy with a little effort. Klaas and other advocates often counsel families of missing kids on how to effectively keep their stories and searches alive through the media even when the initial interest has died down.

"It is up to the families to keep people invested in the recovery effort of the kids," Klaas said. "You need a story that is compelling and a child that's compelling and those children can be made compelling through a variety of anecdotes and pictures. You can get that in any language and any color."

McBride even claims to offer families a sort of "P.R. 101 class" in their time of need.

"We tell parents that the media is their best friend when their child is missing," she said. "Many do not have a frame of reference on how to do this. We try to help them understand the system. Nobody gets the word out quicker than the media."

Authorities are sensitive to the fact that time is critical in investigating abduction cases. Too often, however, it is their worst enemy.

A study by the state of Washington found that in nearly three quarters of the cases of children who are abducted and murdered, the victims are killed within the first three hours. Also, in more than half of the 200 to 300 so-called "stereotypical kidnappings" each year, the children are either killed or never found.

Very good contribution.

Interesting article from 2002...

Portugal's elite linked to paedophile ring

Abuse was reportedly going on at Lisbon orphanage for 20 years

Giles Tremlett in Lisbon
Wednesday November 27, 2002
The Guardian

A scandal over a paedophile ring run from a state orphanage gripped Portugal yesterday as it threatened to engulf diplomats, media personalities and senior politicians.
Photographs of unnamed senior government officials with young boys from Lisbon's Casa Pia orphanage were among the evidence reportedly available to police after they arrested a former orphanage employee called Carlos Silvino.

A number of former residents, and the mother of one boy who is still there, have denounced sexual attacks on children at what is known as Lisbon's most famous orphanage.

Mr Silvino, it was claimed, abused children himself and procured boys for a powerful group of clients.

He has publicly denied the allegations and was expected to repeat that denial at a closed-door bail hearing in Lisbon yesterday.

What has most shocked the Portuguese have been the revelations that systematic sexual abuse of children at the home had allegedly been going on for more than 20 years and had been known to police and other authorities for most of that time.

A former president, General Ramalho Eanes, was allegedly among those who knew about abuse at the home but failed to stop it.

The identity of the mysterious group of powerful paedophiles remained a secret yesterday, with only one person prepared to admit she knew at least some of the names.

Former secretary of state for families, Teresa Costa Macedo, said she had sent a dossier containing photographs and testimonies from children to the police 20 years ago but they had done nothing about it, while she was subjected to a campaign of threats.

"He [Silvino] was just one element in a huge paedophile network that involved important people in our country," Mrs Costa Macedo explained in a newspaper interview. "It wasn't just him. He was a procurer of children for well-known people who range from diplomats and politicians to people linked to the media."

The material sent to the police, which yesterday appeared to have been lost, was damning proof of the activities of the paedophile ring, Mrs Costa Macedo said.

"There are photographs, an account of the methods used to spirit children out of the orphanage and testimonies of a number of children," she explained.

Mrs Costa Macedo said that many of the photographs were found at the house of a Portuguese diplomat in the town of Estoril, 20 miles from Lisbon. Four children who had gone missing from the orphanage were discovered at the house, where they had spent several days allegedly under lock and key.

President Eanes was introduced to five boys who told him of the abuse occurring at the orphanage in 1980 but failed to act on it, according to Mrs Costa Macedo.

There was no suggestion that General Eanes, a popular and respected figure who did not comment on the allegations yesterday, was involved in the paedophile ring.

Portuguese police insisted yesterday they had no record of the documents sent to them by Mrs Costa Macedo.

She said she had been the target of a campaign of intimidation to make her stop investigating the case.

"I received anonymous threats, by phone and post. They said they would kill me, flay me and a lot of other things," she said.

That campaign had started again yesterday, she said, with threatening phone calls made to her home.

Portugal has increasingly been under the scrutiny of anti-paedophile groups who have denounced its lax laws and uninterested courts for creating a paedophiles' paradise in Europe.

Belgian and Dutch paedophile groups are reported to have operated in Portugal, with foreigners travelling to the island of Madeira to seek out young children.

Investigators from the Swiss-based Innocence in Danger group, which claims children regularly disappear from the poorer streets of Portuguese towns and cities, say they too have been harassed and threatened.

Mr Silvino claimed his accusers were making up their allegations. "It is all lies," he said.

The orphanage's director and deputy director were sacked on Monday as the government pledged to clear up the case as soon as possible.

Here's another article from 2001 I think it was:

Police crack global child porn ring

January 10, 2001
Web posted at: 5:37 PM EST (2237 GMT)

LONDON, England -- Detectives have cracked one of the world's largest Internet child pornography networks in a joint operation in which 107 men were arrested in 12 countries.

The porn ring -- which police said spread across Europe, the United States and Australia -- was run by a group of paedophiles operating what they called The Wonderland Club.

UK police said it involved some of the most degrading images of children ever seen.

A UK order banning publication of details of the case was lifted on Wednesday as a court near London heard that seven British men had admitted their part in the child pornography ring.

British police became aware of Wonderland after detectives in the United States investigating a paedophile network found a connection with three Britons.

Members of the club, who described themselves as "the cream of paedophiles", had to send in at least 10,000 indecent images of children to join.

Simultaneous raids took place around the world on September 2, 1998 with over 100 arrests in the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and the United States.

A library of 750,000 computer images of more than 1,200 victims and 1,800 computerised videos depicting children suffering sexual abuse were found.

Police believe they now know the identities of about 180 members of Wonderland, which they believe was set up in November 1996.

Detective Alex Wood, who headed the British inquiry, said Wonderland was a club set up by paedophiles worldwide and its chairman was Harry Mudd, an American who has since been brought to justice.

Seven members arrested in Britain have now pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring with others to distribute indecent images of children.

They will be sentenced at Kingston Crown Court in south west London next month and face a maximum three years in prison.

An eighth man arrested in Britain -- Steven Ellis, a computer salesman from Earlham, Norwich, England, -- was charged but committed suicide in January 1999.

'Stomach-churning'
Wonderland members needed three separate passwords to access the degrading images from registered computers.

Wood, of the UK National Crime Squad, said: "We are talking about serious sexual abuse to young children of both sexes -- and to say that it is stomach-churning does not quite describe well enough what it is.

"We can only guess and say that the Wonderland Club was the principal club worldwide. We cannot say how many paedophiles use the Internet."

Wood said information about the victims in the images had been sent to Interpol and police forces around the world.

"One of the points of the operation has been to try to protect the children. We have pictures of children in hotel rooms and private environments -- there is no way of telling where they came from."

Wood said the paedophiles involved called themselves "the cream of paedophiles."

He said: "On the face of it some would have had normal lives but it was not in any way possible to stumble into this world.

"The youngest victim was about three months and other victims aged up to about 18 years."

Wood said he hoped the maximum sentence for such offences would be boosted from three to 10 years under the Criminal Justice and Courts Services Bill which is now under discussion in the UK.

Here is the warning.
Klaas, if I blow out the margins I hope you can fix it.

Paedo working as singer in holiday bar "The Round-Up Saloon" Carvoeiro, near Albufeira. Portugul

EVIL dad David Reid belts out the words to a Bob Marley song: "Don't worry about a thing...every little thing gonna be all right".

Last week the News of the world issued an alert for vile Reid after they reported how he had abused his own children, sisters Mandy, Julie, Joanne and Sheree and their brother David over a period of 16 years.

With astonishing courage they overcame adversity to counsel other young victims.

The brave victims backed our Sarah's Law crusade to give parents the right to know if convicted paedophiles are living in their area.

So BEWARE if you are planning a holiday in Portugal with your kids, Reid is living a cushy life in a family resort ithere.

Holidaymakers and ex-pats in the small town of Carvoeiro, near Albufeira, are unaware of the sordid past of the crooner they know affectionately as Irish Dave.

Warped Reid, who was jailed for three years for indecent assaults and gross indecency, has the run of the town because he came out of prison BEFORE the Sex Offenders' Register was launched and does not have to register his whereabouts.

The Belfast-born joiner does the occasional day's work on local building sites but spends most mornings in bed and sunny afternoons on his balcony overlooking the ocean.

He is a regular at popular local pubs The Round-Up Saloon and Jailhouse where he plays guitar and sings country and reggae favourites.

On nights off from gigs he befriends expats and tourists over cigarettes and beer at the neon-lit town centre bars that pull in punters with happy hours and karaoke.

This area is home to hundreds of British expats and thousands of tourists flock to the town every year with young children.

The chain-smoking Ulsterman lives alone in a first-floor apartment on a stunning clifftop above a sandy cove called Paradise Beach.

One local said: "It's packed in the summer when the weather's good and the children are on school holidays.

"Convicted paedophiles like him will have temptation in front of them every day at the height of the season."

But Reid, 56, insists: "I'm not a menace to anyone any more. That's all in the past. I just want to get on with my life here and be left alone."

Chillingly he refuses to accept the full gravity of his crimes. "I never touched any of my kids," he claims. Sorry

"I exposed myself to them—and only to the girls, not my boy.

"I still can't find any explanation for what I did but maybe it was the alcohol. (So get a job in a pub, Dave!!--Webmaster) I'd like to contact my kids and tell them I'm sorry for what I did but I just can't find the strength.

"I want to stay here in Portugal. I don't want to be on the run all my life."

But his failure to admit he assaulted his children just adds to their never-ending pain.

Mandy, speaking on behalf of the family, said: "We are glad the News of the World has exposed his whereabouts so families travelling there will know what sort of person he is.

"It makes it easier for us to know he is nowhere near us.

"For years our father has destroyed us. He continues to get on with his life forgetting the crimes against us, his own children.

"It is so frustrating as he continues to play down the seriousness of what he has done. This is a classic case of a typical paedophile denial.

"These men think of nothing but themselves and are a danger to society.

"It shows that a change in the law is needed imminently."

I read the PLE submitted the photo to Interpol.  They were the ones to whom it was sent and so seem to have moved rather vigorously to get coverage of it.

That is far from only focusing on the McCanns.
You did? I read the Spanish police submitted it to Interpol and the PLE commented they didn't even know about it. Who knows? The media reports are all so conflicting, I have no idea what to believe...

According to the reports I've read, the Moroccan authorities tracked down the little girl in question on their own initiative.  The Portugese police were uninvolved.

PLE has no jurisdiction in Morocco.  Of course, it would have to be the Moroccan authorities to actually do the tracking but the point is that PLE got that photo to Interpol and on the front of every major paper in the EU so they are not only looking at the McCanns but following up on every credible lead they have it would seem based on these actions.

And they work readily with Interpol who may be the best at multinational searching anyway.  The photo was sent to PLE and they followed up on it quickly.

Anna:

This quote is from the Times of London, 26 September:

"A Spanish newspaper reported yesterday that another tourist saw a girl resembling Madeleine as she drove through the town of Zaio in northern Morocco at the end of May."
...
"The woman said that Portuguese police were not interested in her report because they assumed that Madeleine was already dead."
...
"She said she handed the photograph, for which she has not received any payment, into the British Embassy and spoke to the McCanns’ lawyers yesterday morning after deciding that Spanish authorities were taking too long to carry out tests on the picture."
...
"A spokesman for the Spanish Government said last night: 'The police are taking the claim seriously enough to have sent it on to their colleagues at Interpol.'"
...

So, do you really think PLE gives a damn?  According to the woman who took the photo and brought it to the attention of the proper authorities, the Portugese didn't lift a finger, and I'm not surprised.  They never conducted, nor did they intend to conduct, a proper investigation.  After completely blowing it off for months, international press scrutiny of the whole sordid mess and its associated political pressure inspired PLE to mount an illegal campaign of character assassination against the McCanns in order to cover up their own nonfeasance and incompetence.

I don't suppose you've ever been subjected to an 11-hour interrogation, which is ridiculous in and of itself.  In that time the McCanns would have answered HUNDREDS of questions, and no one knows how insulting, abusive, or irrelevant the questioning might have been.  Three to fours hours into the session I would have encouraged the interrogator to hurry up.  After six hours I would have walked out.  The police have a legitimate interest and job to do, but they don't enjoy an unlimited privilege to harass people.

The 11 hours was over two days and not at one time.  I have never been questioned by police that long but I was on a witness stand once for nine hours in one day.  The judge asked if I would mind to take a break and come back in the evening to finish as he had another case starting the next day and it was going to be a month before we could get back into court.

And I was under oath all that time as well and before a sitting judge.

And I was asked 75 questions about dates (calendar dates of events) but I digress. . . . . lol!

Anna:

Follow this link:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6981411.stm

The BBC confirms that Mrs. McCann was questioned for 11 hours STRAIGHT.  She entered the police station at 2:00 PM, and only emerged at 1:00 AM the next day.  You have my sympathy, by the way, for having endured giving 9 hours of court testimony -- not fun.  I myself have had to give a 6-hour deposition, and I was asked close to 200 questions in that time, by my reckoning.  By that pace, then, Mrs. McCann could have been asked as many as 300 to 400 questions.  This really seems unreasonable to me.  I have no specific knowlege about how the interrogation was conducted, or with what degree of professionalism, but judging from what I've so far seen, I have no confidence in PLE and strongly suspect that the McCanns' questioning was improperly done.

Why no comments on the paedophile articles I posted? It seems clear to me it is a haven for the creeps.
