An open letter to Dihannah1 and all the Monkeys

Dihannah1,
Sorry I missed your IM last night. I was doing an order at Amazon and did not see the IM until I closed off Amazon and by that time you were no longer on. I was not deliberately ignoring you.
I am going to tell you all a little bit about me here and why I have a screen name that does not accept email. A few years ago a boy from nearby here went missing after a party. The first few months there were some massive searches and then it all stopped. There were some of us who did not want it to stop until he was found. There had been a message board set up similar to Scared Monkeys but different too.
So a few of us on the message board decided to set up our own chat and also set up a search made up of inexperienced folks but with good intentions. LOL I was the only female who was willing to give out my real name and phone number as well as email address to ask for volunteers. At this time I truly believed in the goodness of people. I did not know there were folks who acted like the refugees. I soon learned about them. So the refugees are really nothing new.
The chat that was set up was an open chat. Anyone could come into it. There were 4 of us females who set it up and controlled it. Before long it was inundated with crap. Foul language as well as propositions. We lost complete control of it and were constantly having to clear it. We finally had to change it to a password only chat. That lasted a few days and then someone gave out the password. We finally closed the chat.
The ones of us whose screen name was known were constantly harassed. It was about the time we spent online as well as many other things. We did have a search date and some volunteers but because of all the harassment folks got scared. The search wound up being my hubby, myself and 2 very good friends. These friends and my hubby and myself searched all the time anyway. Where ever we went we were always looking for this young man and his truck. He is still missing after 5 years and someone has pulled off a perfect crime.
His website guestbook is still filled with trash. Porn links, criticism of his family, you name it.
Anyway to avoid all the harassment I got for being online so much I set up a screen name that could not get email from anyone but myself. I do send myself emails from my real screen name when I want to have access to a link such as Scared Monkeys. I also use the extra screen name most of the time that I am online. Scared Monkeys is the first time I have gave out that screen name.
So I hope this has explained to you why. I also want to say be careful who you give out your real identity to online. I have came to trust my fellow Monkeys but I am still careful. At this time I have only gave out my real screen name to Red, Justins mama, Darleenof Alabama, Btgirl and now Angie.
I am so glad we have Scared Monkeys and Red , Tom and Klaas to control it.

Hello Sam,
I was just in the LCD thread and you asked why there were 21 views of your post but no responses.
Thank you for posting. I'm sorry you had a previous bad experience with trusting those online. And I think you should always keep your guard up. Do you feel safer with the Monkeys?
With love,
Louise

Sam, I am sorry. I did not see this until you mentioned it. I was in and out and admittedly not on my game today.
I understand why you do not. It makes perfect sense to me.

Thank you Mishy and Louise for posting to this thread. Yes, I have came to trust the Monkeys. It has taken awhile. Once burned twice shy kind of thing.
I was at this young mans website earlier today. There was a post on there from someone claiming to have found this young mans body and having some friends bury it. Now why would someone post something like this? Of course there was no mention of his truck.
Just crazies I guess. JMHO

Sam, thank you for sharing your experience. I had never posted on a forum before SM, and now cannot fathom how some can be so crude and insensitive to those who are in such pain.
I understand your caution, and respect it. I removed my email from my profile recently, due to the reports of hacking and email bombardment. Since I had not received many emails anyway, I figured if someone really wanted to raach me they could do so through the administration. Those that do have my email have not been abusive, and quite honestly, some no longer post here.
Again, thank you for sharing your experience, and the warning to those of us who may be unsuspecting.
Best regards,

Sam, thanks for sharing with us and for your warning. You are so right. There are too many sick people in this world and most of them are on the internet it seems!
I do not believe in sharing personal information publicly on the internet, and cringe when I see someone else doing it. We are vulnerable enough just by posting on the internet. It is bad enough we can pick up viruses and other computer stuff, and why we all try to arm our computers with as much protective software as possible. So thank you for reiterating this warning.

Thanks for posting your story Sam. Unfortunately, it seems that there are refugees for every case, not just Natalee's.
I also hope this brings to everyone's attention that each and every missing person deserves our support!

Sam, I know you were'nt ignoring me. I know everybody does have a life outside of SM. I KNOW, it's hard to believe!
First, I want to commend you for your efforts on searching so hard for that boy. I'm sure your work has not went unnoticed. It makes me sick to hear your story of such evil people. I just can't fathom it. Unbelievable!
Second, your right that we DO need to be careful. I am probably one of the most gullible people on here and have to remind myself that not everybody has the same intentions. Unfortunately, the internet, as good as it can be, has opened up a whole new world of evil, and made us much more vulnerable. I used to watch my kids like a hawk on the internet, had parental controls and threatened them with their lives (which could have been true) if they gave out personal info.
After my oldest daughter, who is now 23 graduated and was 18, later admitted to meeting a guy a few years older, whom she had been talking to for 3 yrs. on the internet. They didn't meet until she was 18, behind my back (supposedly on spring break in Myrtle Beach with a several friends, and later in the Bahamas). He is now her fiance' from NY and she lives their with him and their 3 yr old son. I completely flipped out when this all came to my attention, after the fact! I always felt fortunate she never had time for guys, she was a professional dancer, worked and went to school. She was such a good kid! But good kids, can make poor decisions, no matter how hard you try as a parent. (this is why I sympathize with Beth so much).
But, Thank God, we are fortunate he turned out to be a good guy with a wonderful family (they were just as shocked too)! Most are not that lucky. You know, it could have easily been Joran she met! It still freaks me out!
So anyways, I totally understand and do not blame you. Thanks for sharing that, we cannot reminded enough or be too careful.

Thanks to all who responded. It is so true Dihannah that good kids can make poor decisions ,no matter how hard you try as a parent. But I have heard of good results from internet romances so keep the faith.
I believe all of us on here have stories of good children making poor decisions. Our son used to tell me when he was 14 that parents should have taught kids all they needed to know by that age and then they should just let the kids make there own mistakes and just be there for support. LOL
Now that he is a parent, a few years ago I reminded him of this and asked if that was what he was going to do with his kids. He said " Mom I was just a kid. What did I know?" So they do learn. LOL
I am so greatful to God that we were able to raise 2 children with no major disasters. JMHO
