Arkansas Lawmakers Consider Caylee's Law
July 12, 2011

Failing to report the death or disappearance of a child could become a crime in Arkansas under a bill being proposed by a state lawmaker from Texarkana.

The bill is in response to Florida mother Casey Anthony's acquittal last week in the death and disappearance of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

Under current Arkansas law, there are no criminal penatilies for failing to report a child's death or disappearance. State Senator Steve Harrelson would like to change that.

Harrelson says he would like to see the crime become a class "C" felony.

He says similar measures have been proposed in 18 other states.

Since the anthony verdict, Harrelson has received about 50 email petitions for the law each day.

Arkansas lawmakers could debate the measure within the next 30 days, but it cannot be signed into law until the next legislative session.
